Learning happens in the most unexpected places and moments of a school year. At SEM, our classes are engaging, our students are actively involved, the content taught is challenging, SEM teachers are supportive, and students achieve more than they believed possible. Yet, we sometimes overlook the other learning opportunities in our hallways, at the dinner table, in our shared spaces, on class trips, or on team buses.

The fourth day of the relentless snow and cold struck Buffalo in mid-January. The school had been closed for four days, and we decided to move to remote learning to keep academic momentum and check in on our students. Our residential students gathered in the atrium for lunch, and I joined them. In addition, 5 students from Havana, Cuba, finally arrived in Buffalo after three long days of travel. Although thoroughly exhausted, their joy when experiencing 4 feet of snow for the first-time added energy to our day.

Letter from Head of School

At lunch, I asked the students, “What did you learn this morning?” The answers varied from the Pythagorean theorem to my drawing class which is much better in person, to we are reading Letter from Birmingham Jail. It is tough. Sitting with students from Nigeria, France, Cuba, USA, Japan, and Afghanistan, listening to them talk about their classes, particularly MLK and his writing, was not what I expected. Still, it was one of many rare moments that can happen at SEM.

The students turned the tables on me and asked, “What do you do on snow days, and why are you at school?” I mentioned that I was struggling to write a letter to the SEM community thanking them for their support of SEM. I felt my letter sounded shallow because I felt I could only say thank you in so many ways. One student asked who you are thanking and why are you thanking them? I explained-

everything we do that makes SEM unique is possible because of the generosity of previous students and their families and friends of the school.

Your tuition does not cover the cost of all the extraordinary opportunities available to you. Being able to participate

in exchange programs with schools in Cuba, Australia, and France, inviting guest speakers to our campus, having small classes taught by exceptional teachers, sending the squash and crew teams to national competitions, providing tuition assistance to qualified students, providing professional learning opportunities for teachers, and so much more happens because of those who believe in and generously support SEM.

The girls had no idea that many who came before them were integral to providing them opportunities and that you had invested in them and SEM. They wanted to thank you, too and taught me that you can express gratitude in many beautiful ways.

Giving Explained

What is the difference between SEM’s Annual Fund and other giving?

SEM’s annual fund is vital to SEM’s operating budget, as tuition alone does not cover our school’s expenses – typical for independent schools everywhere. Each year, 8-10% of our expenses are covered by annual fund gifts, and that support is essential to fund SEM’s teaching and learning opportunities, our financial aid, and our campus.

SEM’s annual fund starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 every year and includes support from alumnae, parents, faculty, trustees, parents of alumnae, former faculty, and friends of SEM. Both faculty and trustee support of the annual fund has been 100% most years. There are a number of levels of giving as indicated in this report.

What is Planned Giving?

At SEM, being a planned giving donor makes you a member of the Elm Legacy Society. Planning ahead for a future gift allows individuals and families - through bequests, trusts, retirement funds, life insurance, real estate, and other estate planning instruments – to provide for SEM’s future and to achieve charitable goals including lowering capital gains and other taxes.

Joining the Elm Legacy Society is one of the best ways to provide a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations of SEM students, SEM faculty, and the quality of the school’s programs and learning environments. And of course, planned giving lets you establish your legacy, whether you decide to recognize your class, parents, spouse, family, or yourself in making a bequest to SEM.

What role does SEM’s Endowment play?

SEM’s endowment is a permanent investment that provides annual support to SEM. It consists of over 50 named funds supporting donor individual interests in scholarship, SEM’s faculty, SEM’s programs, or the school’s greatest needs (also referred to as “unrestricted” endowment). These funds are invested in perpetuity to benefit SEM by generating earned income to contribute to our operating budget. SEM’s total endowment as of June 30, 2023, stands at $10,135,881.

Growing SEM’s endowment builds a stronger and more stable financial base for future generations.

Create Your Legacy

Since the very beginning, the vision of Buffalo Seminary has been to empower young women by providing an excellent learning environment.

Considering a planned gift to SEM?

We look forward to welcoming you to the Elm Legacy Society.

Please contact Director of Development Leah Kimmet, lkimmet@buffaloseminary.org.

SEM had a special evening on October 13th celebrating 28 years of our school’s incredible crew program.

Thank you to students, parents, faculty, alumnae, and staff who made our celebration a resounding success.

Thank you, too, to the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association (BSRA) for hosting the night.

Amidst the festivities, a wonderful moment took center stage with the christening of the new shell, the H.L.M Inspiration. Named as a tribute to our remarkable Head of School, Helen Ladds Marlette, this boat was thoughtfully selected by the team to encapsulate the values of leadership, teamwork, and friendshipthe very qualities exemplified by Helen throughout her tenure at SEM. The vessel is truly a testament to the enduring legacy that she has always cultivated in her 18 years at SEM.

Alumnae Relations Coordinator

Head’s Council on Alumnae Engagement

The Head’s Council on Alumnae Engagement (HCAE) was established in June 2017 as a leadership team to support SEM’s Head of School and set broad direction for transitioning the Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association (BSAA) to a new organizational model with national and international focus.

HCAE Vision Statement

Building on the friendships and shared experiences of the unique all-girls education that SEM provides, the vision of the HCAE is to strengthen connections between the school and her alumnae, and to cultivate contacts and community among alumnae living “Far from thy shelt’ring arm.” The ties that unite us are not limited by time or place.

Mission Statement

Led by a team of alumnae representing a broad range of classes and geographic regions, the mission of the HCAE is to maintain our connection to one another and the school for personal and professional fulfillment, and to advance the mission and reputation of SEM. We are committed to fostering and maintaining the sense of community and support that we cherish from our time at SEM.

In support of this mission, the HCAE undertakes to:

• Communicate to all alumnae SEM’s desire to engage with alumnae beyond their traditional WNY base and announce opportunities to connect with the school and with other alumnae for socializing, networking, and learning about current goings-on at SEM

• Establish new chapters of the BSAA in cities and regions beyond WNY by organizing social or educational gatherings to bring alumnae together, and identifying and encouraging local alumnae leaders to further develop connections and community in their area

• Serve as a resource and catalyst for individual alumnae to build personal and professional connections and conversations with alumnae in their community or in areas of career or personal interest

• At the request of the Head of School, provide advice and perspective on matters affecting SEM’s mission, vision, values, and traditions

For more information on how to plan alumnae events in your area please reach out to Karen Moden ’83 at kmoden@buffaloseminary.org or 716-885-6780 ext. 206.

SEMDay

Our 10th annual SEMDay occurred on May 3, 2023. This one-day fundraising campaign celebrated the remarkable 172-year history of SEM, raising unrestricted funds to support the school. Fueled by social media posts and email updates throughout the day, the SEM community united in celebration of our founding in 1851, with 228 donors contributing a total of $36,482.56! We express our gratitude for your support of Buffalo Seminary, both past and present, and for participating in the collective strength of our SEM community.

Early Bird Challenge

Alumna Ellen S. Goldstein ’70 got the SEMDay ball rolling with a special $1,200 early bird challenge. Early bird donors helped us raise over $7,000 before SEMDay officially began.

Participation Challenge

SEMDay donors unlocked an $1,851 teacher appreciation challenge, and the parents and grandparents earned a $1,200 Trustee challenge and an ice cream social. And finally, our SEM alumnae unlocked an additional $1,200 match from other SEM alumnae. We are grateful to all our challenge donors for inspiring so many others to give on SEMDay. We are grateful, too, for all our supporters!

Our friends and alumnae who have chosen to name the school as a beneficiary in their wills are members of SEM’s Elm Legacy Society. Membership grows each year and includes forward-thinking supporters from all decades and from an ever-widening range of life stages and financial means.

We are grateful to all who help to ensure the SEM experience for our girls. SEM’s future grows stronger each time we welcome a new member to our Elm Legacy Society. Gifts of all sizes benefit future generations of students, faculty, and school leadership while offering tax advantages to donors and their heirs.

Legacy Residential Scholarship

Do you know a girl who would be a great SEM girl? A great Hornet or Jacket? She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. We are grateful for the generosity of the families and organizations that believe access to a SEM education can change a girl’s life, and the lives of those around her, and we want to remind you that in 2017 a Legacy Scholarship was created for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school.

To nominate a candidate, contact Carrie Lyons Auwarter ’96, Director of Enrollment Management at 716-885-6780 ext. 204 or email cauwarter@buffaloseminary.org.
