Washington Dealer Closes

Ritzville Contractors Supply, Ritzville, Wa., closed August l, due to the economy.

Owner Gary Kelly bought the business (formerly called Best Building Supply) earlier this year. He said that the economy, plus an "outside influence" that disrupted cash flow, made it difficult to keep the doors open.

He said, "An outside influence filed bankruptcy and that had an $80,000 impact on my finances. We had great employees who worked very hard to get the Contractors Supply going."

Kelly noted the past few months have been difficult for his wife and four young sons. "You can only float on your savings account for so long until it runs out," he said. "The circumstances were insurmountable. The lumberyard was more of a casualty to the situation, not the cause."

Cigarette Sparks Yard Blaze

Authorities suspect that a cigarette tossed from a passing vehicle may have started an Aug. 22 fire that spread to Cal Coast Wholesale Lumber. Ukiah. Ca.

Firefighters discovered the burnt cigarette butt laying on the grass near the yard in an area not frequented by walkers, which led them to believe it came from a passing vehicle. Fire chief Jay Beristianos said that it is not common to find the actual cigarette after such alarge, but "this was pretty clear. We were fortunate that the fire didn't travel any further."

Cal Coast estimated losses of $250,000, including lumber, miscellaneous equipment, and asphalt that melted due to the high temperature of the fire.

Trio Of Burglaries Plague Yard

Foster Lumber Yard, Vallejo, Ca., suffered three burglaries in just over a week.

When police responded to a July 30 call about broken glass, no suspects were found but a surveillance video revealed the image of a stocky male adult in a heavy coat, wearing dark jeans and a dark baseball cap.

"He was seen throwing bricks at the door until it smashed, and then he went in and took two power saws that were on display," officer Lee Horton said. He said that the two earlier break-ins-on July 2O and luly 27, resulting in the loss of an air compressor and two nail guns-also involved shattering the yard's glass entryway.
