Charity Auction online 11 – 23 October World renowned artist Simon Stålenhag’s only painting ever created to be auctioned online by Bukowskis to benefit Stugan Games Accelerator. Simon Stålenhag is the author, concept designer and artist behind ‘Tales from the Loop’ and ‘Things from the Flood’. His highly imaginative images and stories depicting illusive sci–fi phenomena in mundane, hyper–realistic Scandinavian and American landscapes have made Stålenhag one of the most sought–after visual story– tellers in the world. Recently the rights to ‘Tales from the Loop’ were acquired by Amazon Studios to develop an 8–episode live action series based on the best–selling book.
A physical viewing will be held October 18–22 at Bukowskis classic premises in Stockholm (Berzelii Park 1). The artwork will be included in the Contemporary Art & Design + Important Timepieces viewing but sold separately online at 23 October with lot no. 1076523. Stugan is a non–profit organization that organize an annual accelerator program for aspiring game developers. Stugan is made possible by individuals including Oskar Burman (CEO and co–founder of Fast Travel Games), Tommy Palm (CEO and co– founder of Resolution Games) and many more. Andreas Eriksson Andreas Eriksson’s major breakthrough came when he represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Here he chose to emphasise the interplay between outside and in, nature and architecture, by having the existing thick tree trunks in the centre of the pavilion interact with the paintings and the small bronze sculptures repre– senting molehills and dead birds placed around the floor. Since then, Andreas Eriksson has been in constant demand for exhibitions in Sweden and abroad. His first institutional solo exhibition was at Bonniers Konsthall in spring 2014. It was a critical success and went on to tour Trondheim Kunstmuseum in Norway, Centre PasquArt in Switzerland and Iceland’s Reykjavik Art Museum. In Stockholm Eriksson’s vast painting ‘Stenbrottet’ takes pride of place in the entrance of the city’s new hospital Nya Karolinska Solna (NKS). Measuring 11 x 6.5 meters,
the work is mounted on the end of a huge lift shaft that runs through the centre of the building. Andreas Eriksson was admitted to Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Art at the age of 18 (1993). On graduating, he went to live in Berlin, where his career blossomed, including working as an assistant for artists Olav Christopher Jenssen and Tobias Rehberger. The sudden onset of a sensitivity to electricity forced him to make radical changes to his life, moving to the countryside near Kinnekulle in Western Sweden, but this has not hindered his international career. Niki de Saint Phalle “Niki de Saint Phalle loves myths. She invents them without preoc– cupying herself with art history or popular traditions, without having studied the civilizations which invented the symbols to try and understand their enigmas. She doesn’t depend on knowledge, but relies on her independence. Niki de Saint Phalle has been vigilant her whole life to preserve what is her strength: her freedom.” Pontus Hultén’s words in the exhibition catalogue Niki de Saint Phalle. In this auction we have two unique sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle from Pontus Hultén and Anna–Lena Wibom’s private collection. Hultén and Wibom were Stockholm’s ‘power couple’, Hultén as head of the newly opened Moderna Museet and Wibom responsible for the highly successful Moderna Museet Film Studio. They were both personal friends of Niki de Saint Phalle, who they came to know via Jean Tinguely. The sculptures being auctioned are unique pieces. Saint Phalle created several different versions of ‘Les Amoureux’ while ‘La Main Gauche’ is probably a study. Besides de Saint Phalle’s ‘Nanas’ the hand is also a common object in her art. The exhibition ‘HON–en katedral’ (SHE–a cathedral) shown at Moderna Museet in 1966 displayed the ultimate Nana, a monumental lying figure created by Saint Phalle with Jean Tinguely and P O Ultvedt. HON was a symbol of the independent ‘Nana’, a cathedral that contained an entire exhibition space. Saint Phalle was responsible for the exterior and the other two for the interior. The public walked into the womb of this giant woman more than 20 metres long and found themselves in a fantastic world containing a cinema, a bar, a slide and various moving sculptures. Today, a group of monumental Nana sculptures entitled ‘Le Paradise Fantastique’ in French and ‘Enchanted Garden’ in English stands
outside Moderna Museet. The work was created for the Universal Expo Fair in Montréal and was then donated to the museum. Niki de Saint Phalle’s Nana sculptures appeared for the first time in 1964 inspired by her pregnant friend Clarice Rivers. Initially the sculptures were made from yarn, papier mâché and steel wire, but later Saint Phalle created them in polyester. The curvy, colourful female figures are happy, liberated god–like women, presaging a new, matriarchal era. Saint Phalle also created several Nanas painted in black and white, as a reaction to the civil rights movement in the USA, expressing the artist’s opinion that all women, irrespective of colour, are goddesses. “Through her spontaneous force she can create beauty. Like a goddess of nature, with a totally convincing strength. The best portraits of Niki de Saint Phalle are found in her sculptures, her drawings and her writings. She is an expressionist artist in the sense that there is little distance between herself and her work. Relations are intuitive rather than meditative or reflective; more emotional than critical or analytical. One can say without irony, she realizes herself in her work.” Pontus Hultén. He continues: “The originality of her work comes directly from her personality. Dick Bengtsson The suite ‘Oktoberceremonin I–IV’ was part of Dick Bengtsson’s first solo exhibition held at Galleri Observatorium in Stockholm in 1963. The exhibition comprised eight paintings in total and ‘Oktoberceremonin IV’ has been owned by the same family since it was purchased on 14 November 1963. Two sheets of paper, the gallery’s description and list of the artist’s works, are glued to the back of the painting. Regarding The suite ‘Oktoberceremonien I–IV’, these state: “It exemplifies a transition from a distinct and almost pedantically drawn figurative style in a small format to a looser style on a larger scale in which the subject has sunk into the background and been rendered abstract as barely distinguishable shapes, where the external form attracts attention due to the ostentatiously beautiful execution. There is no aggression or social pathos in this painting, merely a kind of meditative atmosphere in a still and anonymous world in which the figures stand in a mysterious sense of community with each other. This is a subjective painting, far removed from the ‘eternal truth of absolutism’.” Dick Bengtsson’s debut exhibition at Galleri Observatorium attracted a great deal of attention in Sweden’s two major national papers, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, and the Stockholm paper Stockholms–Tidningen. Svenska Dagbladet journalist Stig Johansson’s review bears the title ‘A self–willed debutant’ and continues: “In ‘Oktoberceremonin’, a suite of four extremely refined paintings, the joy of painting, the desire to play with the colour materials to produce a beautiful surface led him
away from the clear to the vague and unclear. But this is a lack of clarity that has meaning. The unclear becomes ambiguous and poetically expressive. The faces, bodies, objects, everything is enveloped in skies of beautiful colour, transformed but never hidden, only glimpsed in suggestive light from rents in the mass of colour and specks of blue sky shining through the ragged clouds.” When faced with a work by Dick Bengtsson, one is never truly certain of the meaning of the different components. His art is filled with mystery and asks more questions than it answers. In his multifaceted world, the observer is forced to challenge their values and paths of association, it demands their full attention. It is difficult to distinguish between truth and imagination and he himself has described his paintings as a form of falsification of reality. His artist colleagues admired Bengtsson’s painting and a circle of collectors and museum curators recognised his greatness during his short life, in which he was said to be an ‘artist’s artist”. Constantly today we see clear traces of Dick Bengtsson’s influence in Swedish contemporary art.

Yves Klein Yves Klein was born in 1928 and was one of the foremost figures in the Nouveau réalisme art movement. Today he is best remembered for his Klein–blue objects. In his far too short life, he was also a pioneer in performance art, the most subversive direction in art after cubism. One interpretation of what drove Klein was the ability to embrace and own everything that is beautiful. He conquered the azure–blue sky by simply stating that he had invented its colour, International Klein Blue (IKB), which he did in 1957. The consistent blue of IKB runs through his art work and he used it for several types of monochrome work in different materials. It was also used in several of his best–known series, including ‘Anthropometry’ in which naked women painted with pigment made impressions of their bodies on canvas. Klein’s claims were not ‘merely’ limited to the sky and the sea. He also re–invented works by great artists of the past. Yves Klein made a number of plaster versions of world–famous works, which he covered with his deep, matt, and unmistakable blue pigment, thus abolishing the boundaries between colour, sculpture, performance, time and space. His ‘La Vénus d'Alexandrie (Vénus Bleue)’ is one of his most popular and well– known works. It can almost be described as an appropriation of the Greek sculpture ‘Venus de Milo’ depicting the goddess called Aphrodite by the Greeks and Venus by the Romans. In 1970, Klein’s widow Rotraut Klein–Moquay and Jan Runnqvist at Galerie Bonnier decided to complete one of his projects and this edition of 300 was finally completed in 1982 and was presented for the first time at the opening of the Chicago Art Fair the same year. Max Mikael Book ‘Cumulus’ was part of the renowned exhibition ‘Malstroem de Luxe’ in 2002. The suite of paintings with the same name gave rise to a nomination for the Carnegie Art Award 2002. Fourteen years later, it was shown at Max Book’s major retrospective at Waldemarsudde in Stockholm in 2016. A maelstrom is a natural phenomenon – beautiful and dangerous powerful whirlpools in the sea – that has always been surrounded by myths and legends. Lux is the Greek word for light. The artist sees the title as a kind of poetical abnormality. “A suggestive natural phenomenon, clad in a shimmering attire of beauty, luxury and destruction”. The other paintings in the suite depict decadent, luxurious environments overcast with a shimmering light in which the striving for luxury and glamour becomes a beautiful, degrading and dangerous force – the maelstrom. In her review of the ‘Malstroem de Luxe’ exhibition at Galleri Engström in 2002 Ingela Lind, DN, wrote: “After his depressing
spaces and apocalypses, Max Book – in middle age – now produces a literally dazzling exhibition about money, luxury and decadence. At first I can’t believe my eyes. But ‘Malstroem de Luxe’ gives the glitter the seductive gleam of destruction. There are rows of paintings of women, alloys blended from the fashion images of madonnas and whores. Marilyn naturally has a part to play, as does the skin of the canvasses, achieved through drip painting over manipulated computer images. Max Book has always been all about light. But ‘Malstroem de Luxe’ is a new step. The paintings suddenly glow with a delirious light. It has to do with the Greek lux – light, glitter, reflection – but also the infectiousness of madness.”

Maria Miesenberger “Born in Lund in Sweden in 1965, Maria Miesenberger, is seen as one of the biggest names in Scandinavian contemporary art of her generation. She has consistently explored the self, the body, the family and the different stages and conditions of life, drawing on her close family and relatives for her role models. Maria Miesenberger is always physically present in the craftsmanship itself and her unique art is characterised by great intelligence and technical perfection.” The words are those of Hasse Persson in the catalogue for Maria Miesenberger’s solo exhibition at Strandverket in 2013. The suite of sculptures ‘Stilla rörelse/Standing Motion’ were first shown at the Lars Bohman Gallery in 2013. As in many of Miesenberger’s sculptures, this suite also incorporates a relief pattern. They are camouflaged by the nerves of the cornea, protecting the innocent creatures from the gaze of their surroundings. The sculptures are light in their form of expression and the soft language of design makes them hard to pin down, they don’t wait for us, they are already moving on. They move in front of the viewer and between each other. Children’s games and children’s relationship to the adult world remain as a tonal foundation in many of Miesenberger’s works and before the viewer has had time to blink, ‘Stilla rörelse/Standing Motion (landande/ landing)’ will already have softly and silently moved on to the next game. Maria Miesenberger made her breakthrough in the 1990s with a series of photographs based on pictures from her family’s photo album. The pictures have subsequently been shown around the world and Miesenberger is one of the artists who strongly and clearly worked on the personal and private sphere, and coped with the balancing act of transforming this into a shared resonance underlying each and every one of us – our own memories of images, scents, events and sounds from the unbounded realm of childhood. Miesenberger’s pictorial world exists on many different levels. It spans opposites such as present and past, dark and light, the individual and the collective, joy and sorrow. The artist is not interested in telling her own story. Instead she throws the question back at the observer – what is your history, what is your story, your experience? Her art is pervaded by a strong vein of curiosity paired with a large dose of humility. With the self and the individual as her starting point, she can pose highly and constantly relevant questions about what it actually means to be human. Miesenberger, educated at University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and at Parsons School of Design in New York, has since her debut in 1993 had more than 50 solo shows and participated in many more group shows all over Europe and USA. Miesenberger is represented in collections such as The Bonnier Group, The Moderna Museum, Malmö Art Museum and Norrköping Art Museum and in The Henry Buhl Collection in the USA.

Karin Mamma Andersson Karin Mamma Andersson has experimented with different materials and different painting techniques in different periods of her life as an artist. ‘Lillebror’ the painting being auctioned, which is painted in oil on metal, is one such example. The technique is derived from seventeenth–century paintings on copper plate. Mamma Andersson herself described metal as an exciting material to work with, giving the paintings a sharper expression in relation to the more traditional canvas, and allowing a different kind of sheen to emerge. In the painting ‘Lillebror’, we find two children, captured in the moment. Children are a frequent subject in Mamma Andersson’s paintings from the 1990s. Andersson adopted the middle name Mamma in the early 1990s towards the end of her studies at Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Art to distinguish her from an artist with the same name. The subjects of her paintings tend to be drawn from the environment in which Mamma Andersson was living at the time, and, as a mother, children were a very central element in her life during this period. She was largely surrounded by boys of this age and they thus became a recurring subject in her paintings, like the not infrequent landscape of Norrland and the graphic black and white birch trees. The children are often
depicted in movement, dancing or playing, but often enclosed in their own worlds. In ‘Lillebror’ we find the boys in a world of their own, in their own imaginations, building something they have invented. In the book ‘Mamma Andersson’ published in conjunction with the major exhibition at Moderna Museet in 2007, the artist herself describes this period of her life in a conversation with Lars Norén: “If you ask me to think about how I painted in the nineties, when I was still naive, which is very beautiful, incredibly blunt and with no smartness at all? Well there were a lot of children in almost all of my paintings then. I realise I was painting my situation, the only subject I had access to, the children and the place where we lived. I was, after all, the mother of two children and I was relating to them all the time.”

Vik Muniz ‘The Scream’. An iconic, globally famous series of works produced in 1883–1910 by Norwegian expressionist Edward Munch. A natural subject for contemporary Brazilian artist Vik Muniz to tackle.
The pictures were selected by MoMa and shown there in the ‘New Photography’ exhibition in 1997, so kickstarting Muniz’ career as an internationally famous photographer.
Muniz (born in 1961) recreates well–known works from art history in wildly differing materials. He uses everyday products such as peanut butter, chocolate sauce, sequins, sugar, pigments, tomato sauce, diamonds and rubbish to reconstruct these art works. His extremely time–consuming and detailed work is then immortalised by the camera, creating beautiful photographs, often monumental in size. His pictures play with our perceptions and he himself terms them ‘photographic delusions’. What the viewer first perceives as depictions of existing works of art prove on closer inspection to be innovative interpretations of subjects from our shared image bank. Vik Muniz has produced versions of for example Gustave Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’, Andy Warhol’s ‘Electric Chair’, Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ and Jasper John’s ‘Flag’.
Muniz currently has a major retrospective exhibition of more than 100 photographs at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Atlanta and a solo exhibition at the Xippas Gallery in Paris, where ‘Vik Muniz: Handmade’ is running from 8 September to 20 October. In the past 2 decades Muniz has held several major exhibitions around the world every year. He is represented in the most prestigious collections including MOCA Los Angeles, the Paul Getty Museum, Museu de Arte Moderna in Sao Paulo, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and MoMa NY.
Having drawn since childhood and worked with photography since the 1980s, the idea of what has now become his signature was born on a visit to the West Indian island of Saint Kitts as a young artist in 1996. There he took polaroid photos of some families on a sugar plantation. The portraits highlighted the marked difference between the radiant faces of the children and the crumpled bodies of the adults. Once he realised that the differences could be linked to the way sugar and the entire way of life working on the plantation breaks people down, he realised that their portraits had to be created out of sugar. He used the glittering sugar crystals to make the portraits of the children on black paper and then photographed the result.
In his homeland of Brazil, Vik Muniz is well–known and popular. He has launched and made donations to a number of social projects, mainly in Rio de Janeiro, which provide education and training for the city’s poorest and most vulnerable children. His documentary ‘Wasteland’ (2010) was nominated for an Academy Award and won The Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for best film. In 2011 he was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and in 2013 he received The Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum for his social work. 234. Tuija Lindström It is now almost a year since the death of Tuija Lindström in December 2017. She left behind iconic pictures and a lasting impression on Swedish photography. Her work as a photographer, teacher and professor largely paved the way for the impact of conceptual photography in Swedish contemporary photography. In 1992–2001 Tuija Lindström was professor of the Fotohögskolan, now the Högskolan för Fotografi vid Akademin Valand, part of the University of Gothenburg. She was the first woman to hold the post and in her ten years as a professor, the course changed, the artistic level was raised and it became a clearly theoretical training with courses in art history and feminist theory. During her time there, the perspective also expanded internationally and a number of critics, artists and philosophers came to give guest lectures. At the time, there was criticism of this change in training, especially from press photographers. Lindström’s most famous series of pictures is ‘Kvinnorna vid Tjursjön/Girls at Bulls Pond’ from 1991. In total it comprises eight photographs of women floating in different positions and the same
number of irons, half of which are red. The soft, pale bodies stand in powerful contrast to the hard, metallic irons. Lindström herself returned to her older pictures, giving them new meanings. She attempted to find new, digital forms for her older works and thus chose not to rely on the historical authenticity of the vintage print, instead choosing to bring her subjects into the contemporary period by updating their technical language. In recent years, she worked with the digital technique of pigment printing. In this auction, Bukowskis is delighted to be able to show the breadth and development in Lindström’s work through photographs from different years and projects. These include everything from her fantastic portraits to her innovative depictions of the female body which counteract the prevailing ideal of beauty, and her later fractal patterns.

Maria Friberg The intensely blue photograph is part of the ‘Almost there’ series from 2000, a suite of five different pictures with similar subjects, suited men floating on their backs in the warm water of the pool. With a serious and unusually strong symbolic language, in a number of projects Friberg has explored what it means to be a man in our society. Her conclusion is icily sharp. The more her camera is focused on the embodied signals of power, the shriller the sense of fear and helplessness becomes. In purely pictorial terms, ‘Almost there’ is so striking that you almost instinctively catch your breath when standing in front of it. Despite the fact that it is a photograph and the men are clearly linked to our own time, the work bears elements of romantic paintings. The theme of human figures floating in water as a metaphor for a spiritual state is common in art, particularly among the British Pre–Raphaelites of the nineteenth century,
one of whose most well–known paintings being Millais’ deeply melancholy Ophelia. Like the apparently lifeless Ophelia in the river, the men find themselves in an intermediate state. Floating between what? Confidence and self–loathing? Success and fiasco? It is open to interpretation but we, the observers, are participants in the course of events. Just as we are participants in the movements of today and of society. Maria Friberg’s ‘Almost there’ must be considered to be one of the most powerful measurements of the state of things in our time, and simultaneously a timelessly magnificent portrait of young men with high ambitions.

Irving Penn Between 1964 and 1971, Irving Penn completed seven different projects that are usually called his ethnographic studies. He travelled with a portable studio, taking photographs of different ethnic and cultural groups. In May 1970 Penn was commissioned by Vogue to travel to New Guinea, where he took photographs of warriors in traditional and ceremonial masks and costumes. ‘Man with Pink Face, New Guinea, 1970’ is one of these photographs. There are two versions of the image, in platina palladium and as a colour picture in which the man’s coral–coloured terrifying mask stands out against the neutral background. The pictures from
Penn’s visit to New Guinea were published in Vogue, for which he worked for 65 years. Instead of going out on the streets and taking pictures of the world around him, Penn brought the world into his studio. He never took photos on the spur of the moment; his subjects were always carefully chosen. When travelling, he had local people help him to contact and select potential models. It is telling that he entitled one of his books ‘Worlds In A Small Room’. He set up the same studio wherever he was – Peru, Crete, Nepal, New Guinea or Morocco – so capturing the whole world in the same small space.
The ethnographic suites of pictures of anonymous people have a great deal in common with his glamorous portraits of celebrities. They are all taken in a similar way, with similar neutral backgrounds and natural light, and with great respect for the subject. Penn told several sources about these fascinating encounters: “These remark– able strangers would come to me and place themselves in front of my camera and in this clear north sky light I would make records of their physical presence. The pictures would survive us both and at least to that extent something of their already dissolving cultures would be preserved forever”. Irving Penn in ‘Worlds In A Small Room’

Jean Hermanson In 2014, Landskrona Foto acquired Jean Hermanson’s collection of 250 000 negatives and thousands of prints. Jean Hermanson was one of the foremost photographers of Swedish working life and also took photographs in other countries, including Ireland. He grew up as the son of a cast iron worker in Småland in southern Sweden and felt at home among the working class. He made it his life’s work to document the people really behind the then growing Swedish welfare state. In the 1960s and 1970s he travelled around Sweden’s industrial towns producing reportage in photographic books including ‘Byggnadsarbetare’ (Construction workers) and ‘Nere på verkstadsgolvet’ (Down on the factory floor). His late breakthrough came with the documentary ‘Arbetets döttrar’ (1986), which drew attention to the hard work of female employees in the Abba fish cleaning factory in Gothenburg and a sock factory in Malmö. When Hermanson died in 2012 he left shelf upon shelf of pictures of workers. In 2017, Nils Petter Löfstedt, Hermanson’s photographic assistant, released ‘Himlens mörkrum’ (The Celestial Darkroom), a celebrated documentary on this treasury of photographs. In the film Jean Hermanson regrets that he did not find out the names of the people whose portraits he took. At the time he did not want people to feel exposed because the photo books were often critical of their workplaces.
In working on the film Nils Petter Löfstedt has managed to trace 400 names based on Hermanson’s photo archive, and in the film he tracks some of them down. But he has also entered the environments that still exist. This year Löfstedt also released a book about Jean Hermanson and his pictures. Hermanson’s photographs were shown at a popular exhibition at Fabriken Bästekille in Österlen this summer. Hermanson’s portrait and documentary photographs are characterised by their blackness, intensity and sense of detail, respect for the person in front of the camera and skilful work in the darkroom. It is time Hermanson’s work and the period it documents takes its rightful place in Sweden’s photographic history.

Robert Rauschenberg In the 1960s and 1970s Rauschenberg started to explore different printing techniques and began his collaboration with Gemini G.E.L in Los Angeles. In his graphic work he was mainly seeking the answer to two questions: How big can we print? What can we print on? In this period he experimented with huge sheets and with printing on a variety of materials such as plexiglass, textiles and aluminum. The Sling Shot Lit series is a collaboration with Gemini in which Rauschenberg used several different materials and built up the image in different layers. His form of expression generally builds on blending and combining different types of image, including photographs, newspaper cuttings, text and advertising to create an entirely new picture. Here, however, he takes this a step further by printing on mylar (a kind of specially treated polyester film with high durability and strength) fitted as roller blinds in a light box. The three blinds are each printed with a different image and can be pulled up or down. The image changes depending on the
position of the blinds. The work is illuminated from behind by fluorescent tubes mounted on the rear edge of the box, making the graphic images and silhouettes of the subject appear more clearly and with greater depth. This gives Rauschenberg’s collage– like way of working a three–dimensional form and invites interaction with the viewer. The Sling Shot Lit series was created in 1984–85 and exhibited often in the USA at the time, including at the Moosart Gallery in Miami, the Kornblatt Gallery in Washington D.C and at Castelli Graphics in New York.
