New season and new energy at Bukowskis!

We have the pleasure in launching the Swedish auction season with Contemporary Art & Design. We have strengthened our department for contemporary art with the addition of Louise Wrede, who joins us from the gallery sector and has extensive experience in the Art World.

Bukowskis is the only auction house in Scandinavia with a separate auction for contemporary art, photography and post-war design. Our autumn auction maintains a high standard, with real treasures dating from the 1960s right through to the present day. Richard Pettibone’s version of Roy Lichtenstein’s characteristic motif is one such treasure. Andy Warhol’s rare “Mick Jagger” colour serigraph symbolises the 1970s, while two unique works by Fernandez Arman represent the 1980s, together with Jonas Bohlin’s classic “Concrete” chair. Dan Wolgers’ well-known photograph “Här slutar allmän väg III” is an excellent example of 1990s postmodernism. Karin Mamma Andersson’s painting “Childhood” illustrates in turn one of Sweden’s most popular twenty-first century artists.

In 2017, we are celebrating Irving Penn! This year marks 100 years since the birth of this well-known photographer in New Jersey. The anniversary is being observed at institutions and galleries around the world. Here at Bukowskis we are celebrating with our biggest ever section featuring his photographs. In addition to these magnificent images, this impressive section of the auction also features photographs that truly demonstrate the breadth of this field. From Albert Watson’s neon sign in Las Vegas and Terry O’Neill’s Hollywood glamour to a large section of high-quality classic black and white images, produced by hand in the darkroom by photographers such as Lennart Olson, Antanas Sutkus and Hans Hammarskiöld.

Dan Wolgers – Här slutar allmän väg III Dan Wolgers has a fantastic ability to read the age in which he lives.

With works apparently ahead of his time, everything he has undertaken has subsequently become a well-known marker of its era, classics in fact. For a couple of years in the early 1990s, Dan Wolgers was easy prey for the critics and the thinking public. The first great art scandal came in 1991 with Wolgers’ ground-breaking exhibition at Galleri Lars Bohman, where he gave an advertising agency free rein to create an exhibition in his name. The following year it was repeated with the release of the well-known yellow pages

phone directory with Wolgers’ own name and phone number printed on the front. One of these directories is now in the collection of MoMa in New York. In 1992 Dan Wolgers was part of the group exhibition “Se människan” at the Liljevalchs Konsthall. As a political artistic act, he had two of the art gallery’s benches sold and taken away. The “bench robbery” received a great deal of media attention and aroused heated debate, particularly when he then sold the envelope containing the judgment from Stockholm District Court to his Norwegian gallery. “Här slutar allmän väg”, the photographic

suite of the Swedish Roads Administration’s blue and white road signs, completed in 1995–1998 became Dan Wolgers’ personal stop sign. The title means “Public road ends here” and the message could not have been clearer. Only this photographic suite was presented at Galleri Lars Bohman when Wolgers exhibited there in 1995.

“We never thought it would sell. It wasn’t photography or art in a traditional sense, not lit or postedited. Everything sold. Including to the Swedish Public Art Agency.” The pictures are in high demand among collectors and institutions. Moderna Museet has the whole

suite in its collections. The suite comprises five different motifs, all with the blue and white road sign. What distinguishes them is the surrounding nature, as they are all photographed in different locations, most of them on main roads south of Stockholm.

Carl Hammoud, Land “Carl Hammoud’s source of inspiration is contemporary art but there is a clear historical aspect to his works. He shifts his creations from the physical office space to an undated and very carefully designed present setting. This is a process that takes time and energy.

‘It feels as though it has to be difficult in order to be good. I hope it gets easier over time but so far it’s been the opposite.’

Hammoud’s paintings are built of layers of doubt. He says that he repaints and over-paints frequently because he “has to put up with the works for such a long time”. Each series takes months to complete and over that period he manages to throw away paintings

and start again several times. “Satisfied” is a word Carl Hammoud often returns to and it is associated with extreme precision.

Lena Cronqvist, Självporträtt i rosa Ever since her debut in 1965 at Galerie Pierre in Stockholm, Lena Cronqvist has fascinated and moved people with her strong depictions of what it means to be human. Her paintings leave nobody unmoved. The pictures gnaw and chafe at you, and maybe it’s because we do not instinctively know how to relate to them that they stay with us long after we have viewed them. Her work incorporates both the tragic and the comic, and few artists manage to balance these opposite poles as well as Lena Cronqvist. Nor is the fact that the woman in the painting bears a resemblance to the artist herself so remarkable; using yourself as a model is simple, because the model is always available. Individual experience and

the private sphere provide Lena Cronqvist with her inexhaustible source of inspiration. As an artist, she has painted her way through life’s ups and downs, arriving at something deeply human thanks to her own experiences. We encounter our own dreams and apprehensions in her work; we encounter memories, hopes and fears. But above all we encounter the lust for life.

Karin Mamma Andersson, Childhood The typical empty rooms in Karin Mamma Andersson’s art works, here a depiction of an apparently entirely ordinary nursery, turn out to be places infested with loneliness and destruction. Her world is constantly expanding, the pictures open out and we understand that the room is the way in to something much bigger.

Elfriede Jelinek wrote the following in “Karin Mamma Andersson: Dog Days”, 2012: “An ordinary nursery, there are toys on the chest of drawers, building blocks spread across the floor. In the middle of them there is a tower of four large cylinders, we see a counterpart to this in the basket chair with two round cushions on top of each other – the remains of a children’s game. At first glance, the subject seems to be filled with the weariness that Mamma Andersson so appreciates – if it weren’t for the unique coloration that makes the whole thing look gloomy while yet deriving from a secretive charge. The floor is painted completely black, a grisly black without any limits, almost bottomless”.

Even the tops of some of the building blocks are coloured like this.

Another detail that attracts attention is that the upper edge of the second of the cylindrical building blocks, stacked in a tower, creates an exact line with the edge of the floor. What is actually anathema in depicting spaces here becomes an indication of captivity. This insignificant detail takes the sense of space back to the surface of the picture.” Karin Mamma Andersson is one of

Sweden’s most appreciated contemporary artists. She made her international breakthrough at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and today is represented by a number of galleries. In 2006 she won first prize in the Carnegie Art Award and the following year saw her first separate exhibition at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, which then toured to Helsinki and London. This laid a solid foundation for Andersson’s continued career. Karin Mamma Andersson once said that she likes theatre but she prefers it without actors. And in her paintings we often see empty rooms, or deserted landscapes. We gain a sense of something having already happened, or being about to happen. Andersson does not beautify her interiors; these are places for living in. Creative disorder. The drawers of the chest of drawers are open, there are wooden blocks on the floor, the rug is rumpled on the linoleum floor. “Childhood” was exhibited at the Aspen Art Museum, 2010, in Karin Mamma Andersson’s first individual exhibition at a museum in the USA. In the following year it was part of Sven-Harrys Art Museum’s exhibition “(7) Grant recipients”, before then touring Germany with the separate exhibition “Dog Days” at Kunstmuseen Krefeld.

Ulf Rollof, Rött Troll “Rött Troll” is one of a series of lightbox paintings created by Ulf Rollof on linen cloth spread across a lightbox. Unlike traditional painting, the subject is turned away from the viewer. When the lightbox is switched off, only the raw linen cloth is visible. But when the lightbox is switched on, the painting becomes more powerful and the colours are forced through the cloth. As is so often the case in Rollof’s art work, relationships between two diametric opposites are a key component.

Moderna Museet’s collection includes one of Rollof’s lightbox paintings, which can be seen in his current retrospective exhibition “Urgent” at Moderna Museet in Malmö.

Fernandez Arman Armand Pierre Fernandez, better known as Arman, was born in Nice in 1928. His father owned an antique shop, which is where Arman discovered his passion and fascination for soulful things at an early age. He entered the art school in Nice to study traditional art, but left after just three years, having found the course too conservative. His early influences included contemporary artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock and Kurt Schwitters, in whose footsteps Arman followed by painting abstract motifs.

However, it was not until around 1960, when he became involved in and formed the artist group “Nouveaux Réalistes” with, among others, César, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely and Yves Klein, that he found his niche and the expression which we have come to associate with him. He began experimenting with early versions of a recurring theme for him – “accumulations”, in which he explores his reality and gives new dimensions to what are already complete objects. An accumulation always features a number of repeated

everyday objects, arranged together and covered with plexiglas.

These works use repetition as a means of achieving abstraction; in much the same way as repeating the same words over and over gradually causes them to lose their meaning. Arman’s works do the same thing using identical coloured pencils or brushes, with the objects becoming abstract forms and losing their actual shape.

This work comprises a quantity of grey and white Berol Verithin coloured pencils mounted in a plexiglas box. As this work was commissioned direct from the artist, the current owner was able to choose the colours of the pencils used.

Rémy Zaugg, SCHAU, ICH BIN BLIND, SCHAU The painting “SCHAU, ICH BIN BLIND, SCHAU”, is a typical example of the late conceptual artist Rémy Zaugg’s art. In English the text means LOOK, I AM BLIND, LOOK. In his paintings the same text is repeated over and over again in different languages and colours.

Zaugg’s art is both conceptual and minimalist. During his career he investigated and explored language and vision, and enjoyed challenging the viewer’s perception. Zaugg was also interested in the opposite of vision – blindness.

include Centre Georges Pompidou, Kunstmuseum Basel, Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and Berlin’s Nationalgalerie. In 2016 Zaugg had a large solo exhibition at Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid. He has also exhibited at Magasin III in Stockholm.

Zaugg was not only a painter; he was also a philosopher, writer and curator. For many years, he collaborated with the architects Herzog & Meuron. Richard H. Pettibone, Roy Lichtenstein Hopeless 1963 Richard Pettibone’s version of Roy Lichtenstein’s “Hopeless” is an excellent example of American appropriation art. Pettibone is one of the pioneers ot this genre. For more than 40 years, he has produced precise postcard-sized paintings, copies of familiar masterworks by contemporary artists. Pettibone’s works include tiny versions of Warhol’s soup tins, Lichtenstein’s cartoon panels and Mondrian’s right angles. In his art that represents art, Pettibone seeks to ask questions such as: Who owns an artistic idea? What is originality? Pettibone´s art has played a major role in the mix of inspiration, borrowing and recycling that makes up postmodernist art. Artists who work with appropriation art deliberately copy existing images and works of art to transform them into their own art. This is not theft or plagiarism as they do not claim to be the originators of these pictures. Instead appropriation artists want the audience to recognise the pictures they have recreated and

transfer the context and their associations from this subject to the new work, whether this is a painting, a sculpture, a collage, an object or an entire installation.

Pettibone started producing exact copies of existing works of art in miniature format in 1964. He based the size of the work on pictures he had seen in magazines and then reproduced them with pedantic accuracy, recreating the process of the original artist. “Roy Lichtenstein Hopeless 1963” replicates one of Roy Lichtenstein’s best-known pictures, including the tiny dots that comprise the field of colour in Lichtenstein’s earliest work.

Luis Gispert, LV Escaldes Luis Gispert lets the viewer sit in the backseat of truly luxurious vehicles. The expensive interiors bear witness to the owner’s love for the vehicle and desire to extend their personality and mark their allegiance to a subculture with the help of luxury brands such as Luis Vuitton. Gispert’s pictures thus create a discussion around culture and values. His photographic series weld his conceptual ideas together with classic, inoffensive landscapes, and create new works with exciting contrasts as a way of describing the transition between nature and culture, rural and urban. The transitions are unpolished and sometimes brutal, as Gispert intends them to be. His aim is not soft, subtle transitions and pictures faithful to reality. It is the sharp edges, the roughness, that creates the dynamism in his pictures.

Luis Gispert lives and works in New York. He is represented in the permanent collections of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Olafur Eliasson, The Inner Cave Series Join Olafur Eliasson on his journey into the depths of the Icelandic bedrock. Like an endoscopic examination, Eliasson’s pictures explore the winding veins of the rock, its minerals, stalactites and stalagmites, and caves. Exploring the shifting boundaries between nature and culture is what Olafur Eliasson is all about.

He is often inspired by nature and natural phenomena from the Icelandic landscape.

The cave as a location features as an element throughout the entire history of art, from the cave paintings of southern France to Leonardo da Vinci’s “Virgin of the Rocks”, and on to the numerous depictions of Italian cave settings in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the early 1990s, Eliasson started to take photographs of the natural world on his annual holidays to his childhood home of Iceland. The photographs were taken while walking, sailing, climbing or flying and span everything from traditional landscapes to close-ups of moss and glacial ice, usually shown together in large

series. One of his most extensive projects, “The Inner Cave Series” is a single work formed of 36 pictures.

Thus Eliasson takes the subject from merely being documentation of a landscape into becoming a contemporary, conceptual work of art which discusses environmental change and people’s attitude to nature.

Eliasson’s fascination with mountains is clear in many of his photographic works. Several of his works depict the exterior of the mountain but his photographs also delve into its interior with waterfalls, geysers and volcanoes. In “The Inner Cave Series” he reveals the secrets of the rock, an inaccessible interior that is mysterious but also surprisingly beautiful.

Olafur Eliasson is one of the best-known contemporary artists in the world. His works have been shown in virtually all the major art institutions worldwide, including Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, and he has created site-specific works in New York and at Versailles.

Irving Penn In 2017 we are celebrating Irving Penn! It’s 100 years since the well-known photographer’s birth in New Jersey and his centenary is being celebrated in institutions and galleries around the world.

The most wide-ranging retrospective exhibition ever, held this spring at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in his home town of New York is one example. The touring exhibition is now shown at the Grand Palais in Paris and will be seen in Berlin and São Paulo next year. Fotografiska in Stockholm has also exhibited a selection of Irving Penn’s photographs this year. One of the world’s most celebrated photographers, Irving Penn started his career in fashion photography where he was revolutionary and broke new ground with his simple, clean images and compositions. The results were published in Vogue magazine, which he worked for for 65 years. Penn’s photographs aren’t snapshots but a deliberate, skilful choice of motifs and execution. Instead of going out on the streets and taking pictures of our world, he brought the world into his studio. It is significant that he titled one of his books “Worlds In A Small Room”. Even on his journeys to Peru, Crete, Nepal, New Guinea and Morocco, he set up the same studio.

Between 1964 and 1971, Penn completed various projects, which are called his ethnographic studies. He travelled with a portable

studio, photographing ethnic and cultural groups. These ethnographic suites of photographs of anonymous people are a striking contrast to the glamorous portraits of celebrities and fashion shoots. The same can be said of his gigantic series “The Small Trades”, 252 portraits of workers that Penn started taking in Paris 1950 when he was there on behalf of Vogue. He continued the project in London and New York the following year. Penn invited policemen, street sweepers, shoe shiners and other groups of workers to his temporary studio and asked them to pose in their workwear, with their equipment. Penn felt that some of these occupations were on the brink of dying out and wanted to immortalise them. Besides Penn’s huge influence on the purely aesthetic development of photography, he understood and developed the Platinum/Palladium technique more than any other photographer. Irving Penn was one of the first modern photographers to revitalise this historic method from the nineteenth century. It resulted in fantastic prints with a velvety matte surface and outstanding gradations.
