News What’s happening in

As seen in the April 2020 issue

July

Find out what’s new, what’s trending and what’s inspiring us this month A word from our editor

Words Amanda Ghalaini, (gardening to-do list) Tammy Huynh. Photography (editor) Sue Stubbs, (Charlie) Tarsha Hosking, (Paul) Lena Barridge, (Lorelle) Scott Waine.

I love seeing colour in homes. Don’t get me wrong - white rooms, with pristine paleness offset by natural textures and raw materials, can look amazing. In my own place, I’ve gone for just a little colour – some pale olive green and light yellow – nothing too brave. But I’m in awe of those who can bring rich colour to the decorating party and totally make it work. Not for you? Check out our bathroom story on page 15 and prepare to be converted! Enjoy the issue!

PROJECTS BY YOU!

Put your hard work on show

Our clever readers Sheree Richardson (with hubby) and Lorelle Clarke produced their own versions of the art deco-style coffee table we ran in our April issue, resulting in two very different custom pieces for their home. Whether you are yet to test out your skills, or are an avid DIYer, you might like to know that we are on the hunt for Australia’s Best DIY Project, with experts from Taubmans and White Knight paints, and we would love to see your work! Turn to page 21 for more details and how to enter.

Tension wire trellis

holes deep enough for the sleeve. Tap in the bolt with a hammer then tighten the bolt with a shifting spanner, allowing the sleeve to twist and pull the fixture firmly onto the wall. For a timber fence: Set out the perimeter of the trellis so the sides attach to the fence posts, and the top and base attach to the fence rails. Check posts are securely fastened into the ground and the rails are not damaged or rotting. Drill pilot holes with a 4mm bit at the fixing points and intersections, then twist the screw eye hooks into the holes, using a shifting spanner to tighten. To set out the trellis, begin at the base with the longest stretch of wire. Thread the wire through a wire grip, loop it through the eye bolt or hook then back through the grip and tighten the nuts with an adjustable wrench. Tip: Always work from longest to shortest in case of measuring errors – you can use the mis-cut lengths of wire for shorter ones. Run the wire diagonally to the opposite fixing point, threading it through the intersection eye bolts or hooks. At the end, allow for about 100mm excess and trim the wire with wire cutters. Thread the wire through a grip, loop it around the eye bolt or hook, thread it back through the grip and pull it taut while tightening the nuts. Repeat with the remaining diagonals, threading the wire through the intersection eye bolts or hooks and pulling it as taut as possible when tightening the grips. Position the plants and attach the branches along the wire at regular points with budding tape. Tip: As the plant grows and becomes heavier, loosen the nuts of the wire grips with a shifting spanner to pull the wire taut, then re-tighten the nuts.

Your DIY toolkit

Wire trellis, added to a timber fence or masonry wall, is used as support for growing climbers or espaliering trees. Wire grips keep the wire taut and can be adjusted later as the plant grows and becomes heavier. Before installing, check that the structure you are using is sturdy and secure, and can take the weight of a growing plant. Tip: Always use galvanised or stainless steel wire and fasteners as they’re less prone to rusting.

1

To build a diamond-shape trellis, use a straightedge with chalk to mark out the perimeter, with the base at least 300mm above ground level. Mark the fixing points around all sides, setting out evenly at least 300mm apart. From the fixing points, chalk diagonal lines. Install eye hooks or bolts at the fixing points around the perimeter, and at every second intersection of the diagonal lines. For a masonry wall: Install DynaBolt anchors, using an 8mm masonry bit with a hammer drill to first make

That room crying out for a refresh, that cabinet in need of a new look – we’ve been painting, creating, reviving and making. Entrance enhancements

front garden

If the backyard is your sanctuary, make the space out front the welcoming committee – whether it’s with plants, a seating area or feature pieces

F

irst impressions last, so if you’re eager to wow your visitors from the outset or perhaps even lift the value of your home, having a fabulous facade is important. Here are 14 easy ways to enhance your front garden and boost your kerb appeal.

1

Add a retreat

Including a seating area at the front of your home can give a welcoming first impression. An outdoor sofa, bench seat or a couple of chairs on the front porch can make a space feel more inviting, but think security; avoid placing anything valuable there if your yard is unfenced, easily visible from the road or close to it, and consider anti-theft measures like a motion-sensor light and camera.

23

Trim the hedges

Strategically placed shrubs can create a leafy walkway to the front door. Angular lines give a contemporary look, while a rounded shape feels classic. “I love the look of formed plants among ones in natural form, like round clipped westringia among flowing grasses,” says Chloe Thomson of @beantheredugthat and host of Bunnings podcast Staying Grounded.

3 Clear the clutter

2

If your front yard is strewn with empty pots, broken swing sets and the odd old hose, now’s the time to give them away, recycle or dispose of responsibly.

Hide the bins

If you have unused space at the side of your house, look into housing your bins there and installing a carefully positioned screen to keep them hidden (check your local council regulations). “Consider running a 900mm width screen at 90° to the side of the house – it will divert your attention to a great-looking garden screen and still give you access to the side Whites ‘Spiral’ 1800mm x 900mm of your house,” oxy-shield screen panel in Rust, suggests $139, I/N: 3041576 Con Calagis, marketing manager at Whites Group.

5 Tackle the lawn

Combat weeds. “It’s important to get broad-leaf weeds like bindii and clover under control,” says Angie Thomas, horticultural consultant to Yates. “Clover competes with the lawn and makes it look untidy, and

bindii produces nasty prickles in spring and summer.” Tackle the problem with a selective weedkiller. Wear and tear, pets, shade and insect pests can also lead to lawn bare spots. To repair, gently aerate the soil, add some lawn seed and ensure the area is moist while the new grass sprouts, then feed with a specialised lawn fertiliser. Keep the edges neat and tidy with a trimmer.

You might have a beautiful house, but an old letterbox can really bring down your kerb appeal. Replacing it is an easy DIY job with plenty of off-the-shelf styles to choose from. Also, can friends and family find your house on the street? Another quick upgrade to make your house appear more inviting is to replace your house numbers with a spanking new set. 

Round out your plants

Flowers and plants in pots, boxes or planters can add plenty of appeal. “Use plants of various heights, colours and textures to add interest in your family of pots,” says Chloe Thomson. “For grasses that are great along the edges of paths and walkways for movement and to look at, consider lomandra, blue fescue and Poa labillardierei (common tussock grass).”

Refresh the timber or make a statement with a brave new colour. “A focal point draws the eye and adds personality to your exterior,” says Dulux colour expert Andrea LucenaOrr. “Painting your front door in a bold hue, such as Dulux Oasis Spring (left), is a great way to achieve this.” Factor in your home’s architecture and the hues in your surrounds to create a sense of harmony. “Consider the colours in your garden as well as on your roof, driveway and decorative features such as tiles,” says Andrea. There are other areas that will look great with a coat of paint, too such as planters, benches and boundary fences.

A cracked and weedy path is never a good look. Some young and small weeds can be kept in check with simple solutions like boiling hot water poured directly over them. For the most pesky, Chloe suggests using an organic herbicide like Eco-Organic Garden’s Slasher. “This won’t harm soil microbiology and is safe to use around vegie gardens and fruit trees,” she says. If the pathway’s had its day, there are affordable ways to upgrade it. A pebble path with stepping stones and brick or steel edging won’t cost much, but will add a wow factor. “Contrasting colours in whites and grey/blacks create sophisticated formal gardens; pair them with galvanised steel edging for a contemporary modern feel,” says Con Calagis. “For a traditional look, go for the warmth of pebbles in earthy tones combined with the rustic look of Oxy-Shield edging.” An alternative is stepping stones with perennial plants that can tolerate the odd stomp. “Creeping thyme would be beautiful. I love slightly taller plants like Convolvulus cneorum ‘Silver Bush’ too. Prostrate rosemary is fragrant and a great ground cover,” says Chloe. “Ground-covering Aussie natives like Myoporum parvifolium (creeping boobialla) look good in a perennial cottage garden.”

Front garden plants

If you’re up for a full front yard plant makeover, take cues from your home’s architecture and choose plants to reflect its style

13

A well-lit path or an illuminated tree add ambience to a front garden, not to mention improving your home’s safety. Wired-in lighting can be expensive as it will need a professional tradie to install, but there are plenty of affordable solar options now available, including decorative string lights, lanterns and post lights that can line the edge of a walkway. Finding the front door shouldn’t be hard either; highlight it clearly with a pair of attractive wall-mounted lights on either side of the door, or if space doesn’t allow, place one above the door. Always ensure your lights are suitable for exterior use, even if they are to be used under cover. Karcher ‘K3’ premium full control home deck and car pressure cleaner, $369, I/N: 6270820

Clogged, overgrown gutters are never a good look, and overflowing water can wreak havoc on the foundations of your home. “Neglected gutters are problem gutters. Regular maintenance and protective meshes are an important control measure to keep your home looking great and avoiding costly maintenance and repairs,” says Con.

Modern homes:

“Focus on foliage and form over flowers,” says Chloe. “Statement trees like maples (above), succulents and grasses planted en masse work well.”

Transform the drive

Driveways are one of the first things you see in a home. Specialist paint can give concrete driveways a new finish, hiding oil and rust stains. It can also protect the concrete and may help extend its life. Coastal: “Think Australian natives like Banksia integrifolia, grasses and compact plants like leucophyta ‘Cushion Bush’ and woolly bush (above). Also, succulents like pig face and chalk sticks,” says Chloe.

Far left: Uni-Pro 230mm x 11mm nap concrete & paving roller cover, $9.50, I/N: 1662803. Left: White Knight ‘Ultra Pave’ heavy duty paving & concrete paint in Beige, $184/10L, I/N: 1540607. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Banish grime

A decent clean can get rid of dirt and mould on painted surfaces, brick, concrete and wood, making patios, roofs, decks and fences look good as new. However, the strength of pressure washers may cause damage, so follow the instructions carefully. ◆

Heritage: “These homes suit perennial borders that follow a colour theme or style,” says Chloe. “I would recommend salvias, lavender (above), English box or formal hedging and roses.”

our dream home fantasy may be butting up against the reality of a tight budget, but you don’t have to wait for a windfall to improve your abode. Small, subtle and savvy fixes can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your home. Read on for our room-by-room suggestions. 5

KITCHEN Clean up A deep clean will make a discernible difference to any room, but particularly the kitchen, which can quickly become coated in grease and grime. Pull on some rubber gloves and attack the walls, ceilings and cabinets (inside and out) with sugar soap, in addition to the usual jobs, like cleaning the oven. Repaint cupboards If the only thing wrong with your kitchen is a regrettable cabinetry colour choice, you’re in luck. “White Knight laminate paint can be tinted to any colour you like and is available in a satin finish. It can be used on most laminate and timber surfaces in good condition,” says Cherie Barber, renovation expert and White Knight spokesperson (renovating forprofit.com.au).

6 7

Add new handles Finish off repainted cupboards with new hardware. Stylist Az De La Cruz (hausofcruze. com.au) says, “New handles can make an amazing difference, elevating a space and adding depth.”

“Don’t hide away timber chopping boards – they make great little accent pieces on display in your kitchen. Layer them with ceramics and timber utensils for gorgeous little vignettes” Az De La Cruz stylist

8

9

Update the floor Dodgy floors are hard to hide in the kitchen (though outdoor rugs are a good trick), but putting in new flooring might be easier than you think. Laminate flooring gives the lovely look of timber at a low cost and can be easily DIYed. For another easy option, try self-stick vinyl tiles.

Make over your benchtop “Cabinets and benchtops are the biggest elements of your kitchen,” says interior stylist Emma Blomfield (emmablomfield.com). “Low-cost benchtop options include laminate and timber.” Replacing a benchtop can be a DIY job, or you can refresh an existing bench with paintable products like Rust-Oleum Benchtop Transformations or Dulux Renovation Range Tiles and Benchtops.

Change up your taps On-trend taps will bring a bathroom into the now. The most popular finish – after chrome and matt black – is brushed nickel, says Bunnings bathroom buyer Dan Gibney. “It’s only a few shades different from chrome, but not as shiny, so it looks a bit special and more architectural.” Leave installation to a plumber; some tapware manufacturers won’t honour warranties if you don’t use a licensed tradie. Invest in accessories Updating accessories like towel rails and toilet roll holders will help to keep your bathroom look fresh and cohesive, while new hooks and shower caddies can make up for any storage shortfalls. Not keen on drilling into tiles? Suction products have come a long way and are a lot stronger than 11 they used to be. Dan also recommends Tesa accessories, which look like normal bathroom fittings but attach with a super-strong adhesive.

Buy a new screen “Shower curtains are a declining market because everyone’s going to screens, especially frameless screens,” says Dan. Exchanging that mildew-stained curtain for a glass shower screen instantly makes a bathroom look cleaner, lighter and more modern. Refresh your tiles Give your tiles a lift with specialist tile paint. Cherie Barber advises investing time in preparation to achieve the most professional results. “Working in small sections, use a paintbrush to cut in tile edges

and over tile grout lines, then quickly roll over those lines with a microfibre foam roller to minimise the appearance of any paintbrush strokes,” she says. Pop in a plant In bathrooms, plants work to balance out hard surfaces. “Plants look great in bathrooms,” says Az De La Cruz. “Use old jars and glass vases to act as vessels for your plant cuttings.” 

BEDROOM Turn to the dark side Transform a bland bedroom with colour, particularly deep hues that evoke comfort and a cocooning feeling. “Embrace darker, moodier colours with bedding, or be daring and paint a feature wall!” says Az. Upgrade your window treatment New window furnishings can provide huge bang for buck in the bedroom, changing the look but also potentially helping give you a good night’s sleep. “New curtains with double rods, to allow for sheer curtains and a blockout over the top, will transform a bedroom in seconds,” says Emma. Invest in storage A messy bedroom is the antithesis of a calm, cool space. Maximise wardrobe space with inexpensive baskets and trays and store out-of-season clothing or linen in lidded tubs that roll away under beds.

12

7

“Get organised! Clear out clutter and add lots of greenery! Move plants into your bedroom as they bring calm and serenity into a space and look great. A

prime example of how DIY can pay off dramatically, this elegant, cost-savvy bathroom makeover is the handiwork of Melbourne renovation experts Lucy Glade-Wright and Jonno Rodd of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com). In a matter of weeks, the industrious pair transformed their dated and “daggy” Edwardian terrace bathroom, with its floral border tiles and dingy floor, by tying it together with a cohesive monochrome palette. Saving money was vital and this dramatic upgrade was achieved on a remarkable $4000 budget. Funds were conserved by keeping the original bathroom configuration and salvaging the majority of the fixtures. And the secret ingredient to the room’s metamorphosis? Paint. Monochrome mode With the relatively tight space, a lightreflecting palette of white with black accents was the logical choice. “It was an instant transformation from old to new and our most impressive makeover,” says Lucy. “It was achieved by lots of cosmetic work – we painted everything, even our bathroom vanity! But there was a lot of prep work, especially dealing with an older, dodgier surface.” Using Dulux’s Renovation Range Tiles & Benchtops, the floral motif running around the rim of the bath and shower disappeared under coats of Vivid White, }

Lucy & Jonno’s reno hacks  If you can, keep the original bathroom layout. This will save you big bucks with no extra costs involved in shifting plumbing and wiring.  The little things can make a big difference. “Switching out the weathered heating air grilles and replacing them gave an instant lift to the space, along with the power point and light covers,” says Lucy.  Replacing fixtures and fittings is the easiest way to update a bathroom, especially things that are easy to remove and replace such as nonheated towel rails, hooks and even the doorknob on the main bathroom door.  Upcycle what you can – here, a coat of paint and new fittings immediately revamped the original vanity.  Make your own bath board. Jonno crafted theirs with an offcut of Kaboodle Victorian ash benchtop from their kitchen reno, cut to size, sanded and clear coated. “Now I can easily read my book, have a drink or even paint my nails in the bath!” says Lucy.

as did the aged floor using the range’s floors product, tinted in Dulux’s Snow Season. The new-look tiles cost just $305 for all the paint and equipment. Vertical thinking Paint was not going to help everything, particularly the damaged bathroom walls. With a nod to the home’s Edwardian roots, the pair chose VJ panelling to save the day. Lucy explains, “Sometimes in older houses, you get a bit of water damage over the years in bathrooms. We tried our best to patch, fix and paint it but we couldn’t do everything. Texturally, the VJ panels brought character to the room; structurally, they fixed the walls and made them look new again.” The panelling also helped the space feel more cohesive. “Everything was so disjointed before, it didn’t feel like one happy bathroom,” explains Lucy. “We crept the panelling around the toilet and wrapped it around the bath. This made it feel more connected.”

Touch of the new Only a few things needed totally replacing. A new toilet instantly modernised the room, Lucy says, and the broken shower frame was removed and replaced with sleek chrome. By changing only these pieces and upgrading the rest, the pair saved enough money to be able to splurge on other statement elements. Black beauty Touches of matt black in new hardware for the shower, bath and basin anchored the space, while the original vanity also got a makeover – and a new lease of life – with Dulux Aquanamel semi-gloss paint in Black Caviar. “There really wasn’t anything wrong with it and we wanted to save money where we could,” says Lucy. “We changed the handles to fit in with the matt black fixtures and fittings.” Timeless and practical, the black and white palette also helped accentuate the beauty of the original stained-glass window. “Beforehand there was so much going on in the bathroom, it didn’t stand out, but now it’s such a lovely hero piece. It brings that little pop of colour,” says Lucy. ◆

hether you’re trying to screen the neighbours, distract the eye from an unsightly view or enhance an area, an injection of greenery can help breathe new life into your home. You don’t need to completely overhaul your space; clever placement and styling with a few plants – real or artificial – can transform problematic areas from basic to beautiful.

easiest ways to block it out is with climbing plants. “To support your plants, use anything a plant will be able to twine through, like mesh or wires suspended between hooks sunk into the walls,” says James Beattie, owner of Horticology (instagram.com/ the_horticologist). For a dense but beautiful screen, try hardenbergia or Chinese star jasmine. They grow best in full sun, but will tolerate semi-shaded spots.

If you need to cover an unsightly view, position greenery directly in front of it to act as a disguise, suggests interior

decorator Liz Hayward (haywardandco. com.au). “If that’s not possible, create a feature in the opposite direction to help draw the eyes away and distract,” she says. “Having a cluster of plants using a variety of sizes and textures is the best way to make greenery the focal point.” Depending on your garden style, you may want a colourful distraction with a dazzling array of potted colour, changing them each season to keep it interesting – consider petunias, impatiens and calibrachoas, supported by perennial favourites like coleus, dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ and geraniums. If you prefer a more verdant colour palette, choose plants with large sculptural leaves. “Plants with big, bold foliage will provide the same distraction – in protected areas think monstera and philodendrons, even some of the larger-leaved ficus,” adds James. } bunnings |

Indoor impact

Use plants in small pots to make a style statement; succulents are perfect as they are easy to care for

Master of disguise

While you can use plants to hide dated balcony railings or ugly fences, they take time to grow. For an instant natural-looking cover-up that’s maintenance free, use an artificial hedge or screen. Add in a mix of live or artificial plants in pots, wiping the plants down regularly to remove dust. For those who prefer the natural look, there are some attractive planted options. “Climbers are an obvious choice, but if you have the patience, espaliering a tree along a fence is a beautiful way to hide it,” says James Beattie. “It takes a few years to get full coverage, but the end result is all class.” Some edible trees, such as apple or plum, can be espaliered. Ask in store for options for your area that can be espaliered, and for established espaliered plants.

Greenery may be the missing piece in your home, says Liz Hayward. “By bringing a living plant into your interiors, it can quite literally bring your home to life,” she says. A single large feature plant, such as a rubber tree (ficus elastica), can introduce height and drama, but if you don’t have the room, consider grouping foliage plants, like philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’, monstera and sansevieria together for a similar effect. Plants with intriguing foliage shapes and growing forms help to make a statement.

Centre of attention

Channel your inner stylist. “Using plants to create a table centrepiece is often a beautiful way to celebrate the seasons,” says Liz. “Nothing quite signals the arrival of spring like an arrangement of potted bulbs.” Plus, pot plants look good year-round, and if you feel like a change, you can simply swap it out with another plant; African violets, peace lilies or Boston ferns are all good-looking candidates. If positioning on a coffee table, place the plant on top of books or group with other home decor objects – it helps incorporate them into the space. Don’t forget about the other furniture pieces, too. “Place trailing plants on shelves and allow them to spill over the sides – it adds an extra element of dimension to a room,” says Liz.

Natural purifiers

Not only do plants look wonderful, but extensive studies have shown they can promote a sense of wellbeing and can also help to remove airborne toxins created by things such as paints, furniture and air pollution. Not all greenery is created equal though, and certain plants are better at improving air quality than others. “The peace lily is one of the most efficient air cleaners, helping remove volatile organic compounds,” explains Liz. To help give your indoor greenery a thriving chance, ensure the room is well lit, water when the soil is near dry – use a moisture meter until you establish a routine – and fertilise during the warmer months. For low-light conditions, choose plants that are more forgiving, like the happy plant or Zanzibar Gem (ZZ). ◆

Stumped about which hard flooring to choose? We’ve done the groundwork to bring you our best of the best

W

ith an increasing range of flooring choices available, it’s easy to feel a little lost. Whether you’ve embarked on a new build or major reno, or you’re just looking for an easy upgrade of the tatty surface in your rental (seek permission from your landlord first), this rundown of hard-flooring options will help.

Timber Natural, luxurious and timeless, hardwood timber flooring is a common inclusion on homeowners’ wish lists and the endless types of timber and finishes make this flooring option highly customisable. But before you run out and put in your order, be aware that this is an investment piece, and installation costs may take a sizeable chunk out of your budget. Engineered timber flooring is an economic alternative, with click-together boards making installation simple enough to do yourself.

TLC for timber

To give your timber flooring the care it deserves, Leon Travis, general manager of sales and distribution at Boral Timber, has these tips.

1

Vacuum regularly with a softbristle head, or sweep with an electrostatic mop, and place dirttrapping floor mats at all entryways. Too much moisture can cause swelling. Always dry your floors immediately after mopping. The use of steam mops on timber flooring is not recommended by Boral. Never clean your timber with common household detergents, polishes, steel-wool pads, wax or similar products. Methylated spirits and kerosene are also no-go liquids. Use a cleaner recommended for timber floors and always follow manufacturer’s instructions. Try to protect floors from direct sunlight using clever placement of rugs, blinds and curtains. Fit furniture legs with protective pads to avoid scratches. And it’s best to leave any shoes with high heels or studs at the door!

Tiles Modern, clean and sharp, ceramic and porcelain tiles are available in a multitude of patterns, colours and designs. They can even replicate the look of timber, as well as wildly popular marble, granite and travertine, at a fraction of the cost of the real thing and without the upkeep issues. Hypoallergenic, durable and versatile – with eco-friendly options available! – tiles are a hard-wearing hero for a busy household. Grubby grout is the main issue with a tiled floor, but you can reduce the impact by opting for tiles with rectified edges, and applying a grout sealer. Timber-look finish in bathrooms? Yes, please. Laminate Veering to the right we have timber’s second cousin, laminate. Durable, budget-friendly and even available in water-resistant options so it can be used in bathrooms and laundries, laminate is great if you want the natural timber look, without a hefty bill. Installation of these printed fibreboards is easy and inexpensive, with no need for nails or glue; simply snap them together. However, unlike timber, it can’t be sanded back, meaning if you damage a section, you’ll have to replace the whole board or area. } Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered bunnings |

PRO TIP

Vinyl No, we’re not in a 70s time warp. Advancements in vinyl technology have brought this retro material back, with a luxury spin. Sheet vinyl gives you a classic seamless look, or you can choose vinyl planks or tiles, which are designed to give the look of timber or tiled floors at an economical price point. Peel and stick installation means you can easily lay them yourself, making them a good option for renters too (with landlord approval, of course). Cork One of the most sustainable and eco-friendly options on the market, cork is ideal if you’re after hypoallergenic flooring. Its natural texture is soft and comfortable to walk on and, like hardwood, it can be resurfaced. Cork is a great insulator and has sound-proofing qualities but, on the flipside, it is easily dented and damaged by heavy furniture, sharp objects, direct sunlight, water and extreme humidity. H

aving the right equipment is half the battle when it comes to everyday fixes around the house. Invest in these DIY basics and you’ll feel more confident about turning your skills to regular home repairs. Handy helpers A tool that needs no introduction is a claw hammer. For general DIY work, choose a hammer with a fibreglass handle to help absorb some of the shock while in use. A tape measure, several metres long, is invaluable for countless jobs. “The Kincrome ‘Xtenda’ tape measure includes vertical measurement markings on the back of the tape,” says Mark Minarelli, marketing communications manager at Kincrome. “These markings make it easy to read if you have to use the tape in awkward positions.” Need to get a grip? Opt for pliers with a compound lever action to exert more force on whatever you’re holding. Most pairs include a built-in wire cutter.

Off the wall Without a level, you’re going to have a tough time hanging a picture straight. Use a stud finder to locate solid timber before driving screws into a plasterboard wall. Some models also indicate the presence of mains wiring, so you don’t accidentally drill into a power cord in the wall. Plasterboard is notoriously susceptible to dings and dents, especially when the kids are at home more than usual, so invest in a Gyprock rapid repair kit that has the lot – including repair panels, tape, filler, broadknife and instructions. Hole lotta love “A cordless drill should be the first power tool you buy for your DIY toolbox,” says Wayne Beckwith, national training manager for Ryobi. Besides its use as a drill, this versatile tool can deliver precise levels of torque (turning force) for driving in screws, which helps to ensure your screws don’t get overdriven.

47

Fix it

Safety essentials

Even if you’re the world’s most careful DIYer, things can go wrong. Minimise the danger of accidents with suitable PPE (personal protective equipment).  Look sharp Due to the forces involved, safety eyewear is crucial when using virtually any power tools.  Clear the air Respirator masks are essential for many jobs to avoid inhaling everything from adhesive fumes to particles of dust or metal from sanding.  Sound off Wear earplugs, or slip on some earmuffs, when using power tools.  Helping hands Whether you’re clearing away weeds or handling materials such as fencing that may have sharp edges, gloves with cut-resistant palms are a must.  Sole survivors Decent entry-level work boots are a worthy investment; wearing thongs while working on a ladder is a recipe for disaster.

Drilling holes into brick efficiently requires a specific drill function. “To drill into brick or concrete, you will need a tool with ‘hammer mode’,” says Wayne. Take your turn There is no substitute for a manual screwdriver, even if you have a cordless drill and a million driver bits. A set of hex keys is also useful to keep on hand for tightening hex-socket screws on bikes, furniture and other items. Cut to the chase A utility knife is tough and razor-sharp, and great for slicing through anything from book coverings to cord and craft materials. Choose a quality tool that includes safety features like a heavy-duty thumb pad. “Hold the knife firmly, utilising the thumb pad for stability, and never use it for prising,” says Mark. “The blade could snap and cause serious injury.” For cutting timber, plywood or particle board, a handsaw is up to the task, is much quieter than a power tool, and usually offers greater control for small jobs.

Home DIY kit

PRO TIP Choose a handsaw with 45° and 90° guides in the handle, which will help you quickly square a line across the timber you’re cutting or mark a mitre Smooth operators Abrasive paper and a sanding block will be adequate for most sanding jobs, but you can save your hands and a whole lot of effort by adding a power sander to your toolkit. The type of sander you choose will depend on what jobs you need it for. A detail sander or corner sander has a triangular pad that lets you get right into tight corners. A random orbital sander spins and oscillates to smooth larger areas, like walls, without leaving scuff marks. Great all-rounder The ultimate ‘renaissance tool’ for home maintenance is a multifunction tool, sometimes called an ‘oscillating tool’. It can be used for a range of cutting, sanding and surface preparation tasks. But its oscillating action is where the magic happens. The interchangeable attachments make it suitable for plunge-cutting, flush-cutting and sanding in the most confined areas. ◆

Block the draught Cold air might also be slipping in through gaps, sending your home’s temperature plummeting. For a quick, effective fix, try self-adhesive seals around doors and windows, heavy-duty options like a door brush strip or even an inexpensive decorative draught stopper. If you’ve got a gappy old timber floor, fill gaps in the boards and skirting with a sealant and boost comfort with a rug. Turn to page 51 for how to seal draughty gaps. Add window furnishings Blinds, curtains and shutters provide a further layer of insulation. “Because a significant amount of heat loss or heat gain is through windows, a substantial physical barrier, like PVC and aluminum shutters, helps modulate the temperature inside,” explains Martin Wilson, general manager of Easy As Shutters. “In summer, shutters can block UV rays, keeping the heat out, while allowing airflow and breeze through tilted blades. During the colder months closed shutters will contain the heat in a warm room.”

Radiant heaters warm people and objects directly by heat radiation, ideal in the bathroom where you want to feel instant heat. In larger rooms where long-lasting heat is desirable, convection heaters that warm and circulate the air are often best. Reverse cycle air-conditioners are a great option in this case as they produce more heat with less electricity. Harness ‘natural’ heat If you’re not ready to go completely off the grid, an initial step may be a solar hot water system. “Of huge benefit compared to conventional hot water systems, they can reduce your energy usage significantly,” says David Sharp of Chromagen. A traditional solar-based water heater uses rooftop solar panels and a storage tank with a gas or electric boost. Another alternative is a heat pump water heater, an all-in-one unit installed at ground level, which absorbs warmth from the air and transfers it to heat water. Although powered by electricity, their energy usage is about a third of a conventional electric water heater. “Choose the system that suits your available energy options,” recommends David. “If you’ve got natural gas, then a gas-boosted traditional solar hot water system provides the greatest benefits, whereas a heat pump like the ‘Midea’ range suits an electric-only set-up.” ◆ bunnings |

Stopgap solutions Choose the right seal to keep the cold weather and bugs out while keeping warmth in

GAP AROUND WINDOW AND DOOR JAMB One way to improve temperature control in the house is to seal around door and window jambs with self-adhesive foam strip. Note: The jamb is the part of the frame that the door or window stops against when it closes. DIY TOOLKIT

 Safety equipment  Tape measure  Clean damp cloth  Utility knife Self-adhesive weather strip 

STEPS

1

To determine which seal to buy, close the door or window and, from the outside, check the size of the gap between it and the jamb. From the inside, measure the width of the jamb and around the inside. Tip: We used a 9mm-wide brown seal to match the timber jamb, with a thickness of 4.8mm, which seals gaps from 2.5mm to 4.8mm. A five-metre roll was just enough to seal around a standard large front door. Clean around the jamb with a warm damp cloth to remove dust and grease, then leave the surface to dry thoroughly so the seal adheres. Position the sticky side of the seal to run along the top of the jamb, trim the end with a utility knife, run a finger lightly along the seal, then remove the paper. Tip: Avoid stretching the seal as this affects the stickiness. Position the seal at the top corner to run it down the side of the jamb, trimming at the base with a utility knife and removing the paper, repeat with the other side. }

ealing gaps around doors, windows, walls and floors will not only make your home more comfortable and look better finished, but will also help keep your heating costs down. Just don’t make your home completely airtight. It’s important to have some ventilation to let natural air into the home, especially if you have gas heaters or appliances and to avoid possible build-up of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). If you’re not sure how much you can safely seal, seek help from a professional.

FOR SMALL GAPS…

Before

A fast and budget-friendly solution is to fill the space with a flexible, moistureresistant foam called gap filler rod, which is available in various thickness. . Run the rod around the window to measure out the length required then snap the end. Tip: Using one continual piece, including around corners, maximises the seal. Push the foam into the gap using a blunt tool such as a screwdriver, ensuring the ends butt against each other. Replace the window trim using construction adhesive.

GAP BETWEEN WINDOW AND WALL When windows are installed, there are often uneven gaps between the window frame and the wall lining. Most windows are finished with trim to cover the usually untidy edges of the plasterboard. If you can feel cold air coming in on a windy day, then it could be worth getting behind the trim to seal the space. Remove the trim then fill the gaps with an expanding foam that hardens to an airtight, moisture-resistant seal. 2

GAP BETWEEN FLOOR AND SKIRTING Ideally, skirting boards are installed once a new floor has been laid, but when it’s not possible to remove the skirting first, the gap along the edge of the new flooring is covered with scotia moulding. Traditionally this is concave-shaped, but more modern finishes use quad mouldings with an outward curve.

After

GAP BETWEEN FLOOR AND WALL Skirting boards are installed to cover the expansion gap between the floor and the wall, often hiding uneven edges of the flooring while protecting walls from scuffs. But if they aren’t flush with the wall they can also let in unwanted cold air. Dry-fit the skirting board to the wall to check the fit, remove and zig-zag a bead of construction adhesive along the back. Tip: We used an applicator adhesive but if you have more than a couple of boards to fix it’s more economical to use tubes with a caulking gun. Position the board, moving it into position and wriggling it to smudge the adhesive slightly. Wipe along the top with a clean cloth to remove any excess and position painter’s tape every 300mm to hold the board against the wall as the adhesive dries.

Tap in the nails with a lightweight hammer, ensuring the heads are flush with the surface. Tip: Run along the moulding with abrasive paper to remove any hammer marks. }

GAP UNDER A DOOR The clearance an entry door needs to open and close can leave a big gap. A weather seal ensures this gap closes as the door is shut. When buying a seal, check that it suits your door type and is long enough. We used an automatic weather seal for an inward-opening door that lifts to clear carpet and can be for a 1220mm-wide entrance or trimmed down to minimum 915mm. STEPS Measure the distance between the door stops. Apply masking tape on the weather seal where the cut will be, minus 3mm from the measurement for the latch side and transfer the cut line onto the tape using a combination square and pencil. Clamp the seal to a flat, stable surface and use a hacksaw with a sharp blade to cut through the seal. Remove the tape and smooth the cut edge with abrasive paper. Tip: It’s best to work outside or cover the floor to protect from the tiny filaments created when cutting. aundry is an unavoidable fact of life, but just as we take pride in our favourite clothes, investing in quality laundry tools lends a feeling of satisfaction to this run-of-the-mill chore. Daytek laundry accessories are designed for our climate and for the way Australians live, with clotheslines, airers and laundry trolleys that tick the boxes for both function and form.

WALK THE LINE The rotary clothesline is an iconic part of the Australian backyard landscape, but as we increasingly live and entertain in our outdoor areas, and many of these spaces have become smaller, we’re unwilling to permanently devote the same amount of real estate to the washing line. Daytek has answered the call for more flexible clothesline options with their new MK2 range of rotary and fold-down clotheslines, which feature all new redesigned mouldings for improved useability, safety and ease of assembly.

SMOOTH OPERATORS You probably won’t choose to sun-dry your smalls when company is expected, but even empty, having the clothesline on display isn’t ideal. Daytek’s products are designed to be close to invisible when not in use. The MK2 fold-down line operates with a lift and lock system (which won the company an Australian Good Design Award) that makes collapsing it against the wall the work of seconds. The MK2 rotary clothesline is even more inconspicuous; the rotary head folds down and the entire clothesline can be removed from the ground when it’s time for backyard cricket! Even Daytek’s clothes airers and laundry trolleys are designed to fold up and store out of sight between loads.

T

here’s certainly no shortage of backyard chores – if we’re not doing laundry, there’s probably a garden job or two waiting to be done. Whatever you’re lugging around the backyard, from soil to garden prunings, a good wheelbarrow will lighten the load.

TAKE THE WHEEL When you’re after a wheelbarrow that can take tough treatment, Daytek has got your back. Made from corrosion-resistant Australian Bluescope steel, Daytek wheelbarrows are built to last.

LASTING IMPRESSION Daytek wheelbarrows have won both the Dunhill Industrial Award and the Prince Phillip Prize for Australian design, so you can expect them to be both functional and robust. Best of all, spare parts are readily available from Bunnings, so you can be confident your wheelbarrow will be with you, ahem, for the long haul.

The basic subway tile is a long-lasting favourite, which works in virtually any style of interior from contemporary and industrial to heritage; it’s also a popular choice for Hamptons-style homes. Common in kitchens, subways are an easy-toclean, practical choice for bathroom walls too; a light, glossy finish will help to reflect light and, along with mirrors, help to create the illusion of more space, perfect for small washzones.

Colour cues

White is the classic colour for subways, providing a neutral backdrop that is an ideal foil for bold accessories, but their enduring popularity means you can also find them in a range of sizes, colours and textured finishes – these have a wonderfully appealing handmade feel. For added depth and interest, consider a subway tile with a bevelled edge, which delivers an almost 3D effect.

What lies between

Grout, the substance that fills the gaps between tiles, will affect the overall appearance of a tiled space. A grout in the same or similar colour as the tiles can create a seamless effect; to highlight white tiles or a distinct pattern, choose a darker grout, which may also be better at disguising dirt. } bunnings.com.au |

Make it Tip Be bold and enhance an interesting pattern such as herringbone with a contrasting coloured grout

Herringbone

Position and pattern

How you arrange your subway tiles will have a big impact on how a room looks and feels. Laying them vertically can make the ceiling seem higher, while positioning them horizontally can add to the sense of width. The rectangular shape of subways lends itself to a number of patterns: the simplest is the straight or stack bond, where tiles are laid in straight lines with a grid effect. The brick or stretcher bond pattern has the tiles staggered like bricks in a wall. A herringbone pattern can run diagonally (as above) or at right angles. A simpler diagonal style is laying tiles at the same angle. In the crosshatch or basket weave pattern, pairs of tiles are laid horizontally or vertically next to each other to form squares, which are then alternated to look as if woven. Square tiles can also be interspersed with rectangular subways to form more intricate patterns such as windmill, cobblestone and English bond. ◆

Bring new life to a damaged mirror with basic repairs and paint TOOLS & MATERIALS

Contrasting paint highlights a fancy edge

PRO TIP Completely removing the frame from an old mirror ensures there’s no risk of paint spills while it’s revived with paint and a decorative border It had seen better days, but this much-loved 60-year-old chair now has fresh appeal

PA I N T E D C H A I R Fill dents and scratches then prime and repaint in a cheery colour to prepare a handmade wooden chair for a new generation of littlies!

Photography James Moffatt, styling Tilly Roberts. Paint colours may vary on application.

TOOLS & MATERIALS afety equipment  S 180- and 240-grit abrasive paper  with sanding block Cloth  0mm angled cutting brush  5 Timber filler (with spatula)  Three-in-one primer  Water-based paint 

Method

1

Fill any dents, deep scratches and nail holes with timber filler using the supplied spatula, leaving it to dry. Smooth over all visible surfaces with 180-grit abrasive paper, sanding over light scratches and the filler without removing the original paint or varnish. Wipe over with a damp cloth to remove dust.

PRO TIP Fold and tear a sheet of abrasive paper lengthways, then fold one length around the sanding block to use on flat surfaces. Fold the other piece into thirds to use around rails and dowels

2

Using an angled cutting brush, apply primer over the chair, dabbing into the joins and wiping away drips, leaving to dry for at least an hour. Wash out the brush and dab with paper towel. Tip: A three-in-one primer ensures new water-based paint will adhere to the old surface – even glossy varnish – and also blocks tannins from seeping through and staining fresh paint. Use the brush to paint the chair, leaving it to dry for at least two hours. Lightly smooth all over with 240-grit abrasive paper, wipe away dust with a damp cloth then apply a second coat and leave to dry thoroughly.

Method

1

Working on a drop sheet and wearing protective gloves in case of breakage, position the mirror face down, push back the metal tabs with a side of the screwdriver and remove the mirror from the frame. Tip: If the frame is not firmly joined at the corners (ours wasn’t), apply timber adhesive to the join from the back, leave to dry then attach flat corner brace brackets with the supplied screws. Smooth over the frame using 180-grit abrasive paper, removing any grime and working over any surface scratches. Wipe away dust with a clean damp cloth. Hold the spray paint can 250mm from the frame to apply a light, even coat, leaving it to dry for about 20 minutes before repeating to apply three or four coats. Tip: Wear a mask and gloves, work in a well-ventilated area and cover surrounding surfaces to avoid overspray. To create contrasting edges, mask the front of the frame with painter’s tape and use an angled brush to paint around the outside edge of the frame, leaving to dry for at least an hour. Apply a second coat; leave to dry thoroughly. Position the frame face down on the drop cloth and, wearing protective gloves, position the mirror into the frame and bend the tabs back towards the mirror. Tape around the join with silver duct tape to reinforce the tabs and add bumper pad surface protectors at the corners to prevent scratching the wall. 

Working underneath the seat, remove screws with a screwdriver and keep for reassembly. Using 180-grit abrasive paper, sand over the base, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Wearing a mask and gloves, spray primer over the stool and let dry. Using an angled cutting brush, paint the stool, leaving it to dry for at least two hours. Lightly smooth all over with 240-grit abrasive paper, wipe away dust with a damp cloth then apply a second coat. Leave to dry thoroughly. Remove the old upholstery, using pliers to pull out nails or staples. Use original foam as a template to mark the size on new foam, then cut using a serrated bread knife. Cut the wadding to fit over the foam and down the sides. Tip: If the original foam is in good condition, shake it out to re-use and cut a new piece of wadding. Spray the top and sides of the foam and smooth over the wadding. Position the fabric face down on a flat surface and centre the layered stool base top side down. Measure and mark 120mm around it. Check there is enough fabric to smooth down the sides and add 20mm all around for the hem. Cut fabric with scissors. Fold the edge under by 20mm and use a staple gun to secure the fabric under the base. Pull the fabric taut and smooth to staple the opposite side. Working on opposite sides around the base, fold the hem while gathering small, even sections, securing with staples. Tip: For a square stool, trim excess wadding from the corners and fold the fabric like wrapping a gift, stapling underneath to secure. Reassemble the stool by attaching the base from underneath using the original screws. Prop the stool sideways and use a small hammer to tap in upholstery nails, if desired.

Remove the handles and lock using a screwdriver. Fill the holes with timber filler and leave to dry. Tip: For deep holes, build up layers of filler from both sides, leaving to dry between each to prevent cracking. Position the cabinet on a drop sheet, sand all over with 180-grit abrasive paper, including the drawer edges and over the filled holes, ensuring the filler is flush with the surface. Remove dust with a damp cloth and leave to dry. Apply laminate primer using an angled brush along the drawer edges and into the corners, finishing with a mini roller over the flat surfaces. Leave to dry for at least four hours. Tip: If your cabinet was originally dark, apply two coats of primer, leaving to dry after each coat. Apply tinted laminate paint using an angled brush along the drawer edges and into the corners, finishing with a mini roller over the flat surfaces. Leave to dry for at least six hours. Apply a second coat and leave to dry overnight. To position the drop handles, open the top drawer slightly and place a short piece of painter’s tape on the top edge, then find and mark the centre by dividing the width in half and marking the tape. Use a combination square to measure down from the mark to the preferred position of your handle and mark with a short piece of tape. Repeat for the base drawer, using the same measurements. Check the marks are straight by holding a level against them vertically. Using a 4mm bit, drill holes for the handle. From inside the drawer, push the supplied screw through the hole and position the handle, holding it while tightening the screw from inside with a screwdriver. Position the corner pieces flush with the edges and use a small hammer to tap in the supplied nails. ◆

Plant pick

Easy, breezy beauties For a garden fix that’s bound to thrive, try these low-effort, big-impact plants Crepe myrtle Once established, this gorgeous tree requires very little pruning and produces long-lasting blooms from summer to autumn, in white, pink, purple and red tones. Traditional crepe myrtles can reach 6-8m, but for a smaller tree, seek out ‘Indian Summer’, which grows to 3-4m and is drought and heat tolerant. Banksia ‘Birthday Candles’ With its dense, compact habit, this lowgrowing shrub is perfect for rockeries, native plantings or container gardening. A mass of fine needle-like foliage is topped with large, golden-orange flower spikes from autumn to winter, which are very attractive to native birds. It will also tolerate light frost when established.

Chain of hearts Fall in love with the attractive, waxy, heart-shaped leaves of this trailing succulent. Its dark green leaves have silver markings and purple undersides, and it has small but interesting tubular flowers throughout the year. The chains can grow to 3-4m but can be easily pruned back to maintain a desired length.
