NURSERY SHINE

Husband and wife design duo @joshandjenna share the gorgeous mural they created for their baby daughter, Story Rose, using Porter’s Paints

Bringing personality to an otherwise boring white wall, the inspiration for Story’s nursery mural came from nature. The couple referenced the sun, waves and mountains in their design, which they marked out in pencil first then, using a small brush, painted the outlines of the shapes. Two coats applied with a roller ensured a beautiful finish.

Staying close to home recently has had the odd benefit, one of them being having more time in the garden. I’m not a natural green thumb, and my plant disasters have been many, but when I harvest some tasty tomatoes, or find the gardenias bursting with blooms, all the effort seems worth it. So I’ll be following some of the steps in ‘Autumn Agenda’, page 28, to get my garden in shape for spring – and taking lessons from the Plant Mama (page 8) to give my indoor greenery some love. Enjoy the issue!

TOP 3 DIY LIGHTS Create a stylish statement with these easy-to-install pendants

Brilliant ‘Havana’ DIY plug in pendant in Deep Natural Rattan, $44, I/N: 0089051

Why it’s great

Antique brass and a matt black finish combine to bring a retro look to your lighting scheme

Mercator ‘Ruben’ 27cm batten fix light in Black, $52.50, I/N: 4371403 (bulb not included)

LIGHT RELIEF

Upgrade a daggy light fitting in minutes – without a sparkie – with a DIY pendant light

EXPERT TIP

A DIY pendant works by replacing the old light bulb with an adaptor that plugs into the existing bayonet batten fixing. Turn off the power before installing, wear gloves and safety glasses in case of broken glass, and dispose of the old bulb responsibly. We used Brilliant ‘Milly’ DIY suspension light in Gloss White, $24.95, I/N: 0089045, which uses an Edison bulb (not included), and these instructions relate to that product; use them as a guide, and refer to the specific instructions in your chosen kit.

An ‘Edison’ bulb has a screw-in base, while a bayonet bulb has pins so it twists to lock. Always check which bulb is required

TOOLS & MATERIALS

 Safety equipment  Stepladder  Screwdriver  Ceiling paint  50mm angled paintbrush  DIY plug in pendant kit  Light bulb

2 Gently twist the old light bulb to the left to remove it, leaving the batten holder attached to the ceiling. Tip: If needed, touch up the ceiling paint using a 50mm angled brush.

Brilliant ‘Elliot’ concrete DIY plug in pendant in Cream, $44, I/N: 0089052 (bulb not included)

3 Unscrew the DIY pendant’s cord anchor and slide the cover 200mm down the cord. Why it’s great

Go for maxiumum impact and install a black wire shade in a striking geometric design

Brilliant ‘Trinity’ metal wire batten fix light in Black, $53, I/N: 4371035 (bulb not included) Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. 4 To fit the plug, line the pins up with the slots in the batten holder, push up gently and twist to the right. Tug gently to check it is secure. bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

5 Slide the cover up and over the batten holder to position against the ceiling, then tighten the cord anchor to hold it in place. bunnings

6 Install an Edison bulb inside attached shade by twisting it to the right. Turn the power back on and switch on the light.

DISPOSING OF OLD BULBS Not all light bulbs are created equal and should be disposed of accordingly. The guides vary by state, so it’s best to check your local council’s recommendation. Never put bulbs in your home recycling bin. ◆

Photography Larnie Nicolson, styling Sam van Kan. Instructions and steps photography Natasha Dickins

1 Turn power off. Set up a stepladder on a stable surface. Remove old light shade. Use a screwdriver to check the screws in the batten holder are tight and it can support the new light.

Why it’s great

B JENNA OF PLANT MAMA creates indoor plant jungles

iophilic design aims to reinforce our connection with nature by creating sensory spaces filled with organic textures, sunlight, fresh air and greenery. Indoor plants are a big part of this, helping to reduce stress, clean the air and bring a note of calm to our interiors, which, given our new home-based lifestyles, we need now more than ever. The home of plant designer Jenna Holmes (plantmama.com.au) is one such leafy haven.

STYLE TIP “Use stands and different-sized pots to add varying heights and widths – plants look great when positioned on different levels,” says Jenna

Dream it Propagate plants

Strike it!

Test tube vases

Expand your indoor collection by taking cuttings from your favourite plants Striking cuttings in water: try vining plants like devil’s ivy

1

Using clean secateurs, take a cutting just below a node (the bump along the stem where the leaf attaches) and remove the lower leaf.

2

Fill a clean glass with water and position the cutting so the node is submerged. Place the glass in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight.

3

Ensure the water remains clear and remove any cuttings that yellow or brown. Top up the water to keep the node submerged. After three to four weeks, roots will form. Once roots are approximately 5-10cm, transplant into a small pot with good quality potting mix. Water in well with diluted seaweed solution.

Position cuttings where you can see their root development

Dip the end into honey or a rooting hormone, before inserting into a pot filled with seed-raising mix.

Position the pot in a bright spot, out of sunlight. Mist the soil regularly to keep it moist.

After a few weeks, when cuttings resist gentle tugs, they’re ready for planting. Gently remove from the soil, check the roots, and plant in a slightly larger pot; otherwise, leave as is to continue rooting. ¿

Got you covered Make your windows work harder, with furnishings to turn your home into a cosy, private haven

B

y carefully selecting curtains, blinds or shutters, your window can become a practical feature, contributing to your comfort. From blocking Jack Frost’s icy fingers, to filtering light, window furnishings can help make your home a sanctuary.

Warm welcome

We love large windows for light and connection with the outdoors, but acres

of glass walls are terrible for inviting in icy air and letting warmth from heaters trickle out. Window furnishings are the ultimate tool to keep your home cosy. The visual effect of thick drapes is instantly warming while also serving as a physical barrier against the cold outside – for best effect, run the curtain track or rod beyond the window frame to help prevent cold air from seeping around the edge of the fabric. If blinds and shutters are more your bag,

look for shutters that sit snugly within the window embrasure, or opt for hightech honeycomb cellular blinds that are designed to maximise insulation.

Dark side

Another unwanted consequence of our lust for light can be sunshine blasting into bedrooms in the mornings, which is where block-out blinds or curtains become a sleepyhead’s best friend. Fabric technology allows for window furnishings that block out all unwanted light – and they come in all colours, including white, so you’re not required to commit to dark shades!

Sheer romance

Today’s floaty sheers are not your nana’s patterned privacy curtains. Modern sheers come in a range of colours and finishes to suit your decor. They can be floaty and romantic. They lend fairy-tale ambience to a room with the way they softly filter light, while also helping to keep your private life private. For the best of both worlds, team sheers with thicker drapes in front or roller blinds behind to give you warmth and darkness, as needed.

Smart security gives you piece of mind with cameras and video doorbells, while smart plugs can turn any standard appliance into a smart one.

Simple set-ups

Set up is often the biggest sticking point for someone apprehensive of smart home

tech, but it really is super simple. If you can screw in a light bulb and operate the most basic of apps on your smartphone, you can handle setting up your smart home. The best thing about this technology is you can do as much or as little as you like, from a simple smart plug added to an existing socket to a full set up with all the bells and whistles. Home automation apps like Grid Connect and voice assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa bring all of these tools together into one virtual place, allowing you to synchronise tasks and even control them all with your voice. European-style laundries site the washer in the kitchen; you’ll need a second sink for this approach

New Zealand renovators Alice and Caleb Pearson of Pearson + Projects took advantage of a generous space to create a multi-functional zone with a laundry and study

Kaboodle Kitchen bamboo benchtops were used for the laundry bench, to make a desktop in the adjoining study nook, and – cut to size – to make practical and decorative shelves in both spaces

European style If your top priorities include saving space and multitasking, consider integrating the laundry into the kitchen. “An advantage of incorporating a laundry set-up in a central hub like the kitchen is you can conveniently take care of the washing, while getting dinner ready,” explains Bunnings kitchen and laundry design specialist Belle Haddon. Another option is to merge the laundry and bathroom. “By creating one wet room rather than two, you can save space and money as the plumbing is grouped,” says interior designer Gabrielle Reinhardt of Berkeley Interiors (berkeleyinteriors.com.au). For an effective room, map out the floor plan, allowing for traffic flow, cabinetry and appliance door clearances and plenty of storage and bench space. “Two under-bench 

Sliding doors

Now you see it, now you don’t! A large barn door hides or reveals the laundry as needed.

To get precisely the look the couple wanted, Caleb created his own barn door, using a trim router to score grooves in an MDF panel, echoing the herringbone layout of the tiled splashback. For a similar colour, try Taubmans Dusted Violet.

An on-trend barn door track adds industrial style to this laundry

integrated slide-out laundry hampers streamline sorting whites and darks, while a high open shelf is ideal for keeping your washing basket handy,” says Gabrielle Reinhardt. Specific building regulations apply to a hybrid kitchen/laundry. “When incorporating a front-load washing machine into a kitchen, it becomes a wet area requiring a water-resistant floor, waterproof wall and floor junctions and the addition of a second separate sink to be used as a laundry wash tub,” explains Belle Haddon. In WA, further compliance measures are required, with a partition wall needed between the laundry space and any food prep area. Always consult the relevant authorities for information on regulations in your area. For a cohesive look, keep the palette consistent and choose tapware and sinks from the same range. “A tall retractable sink mixer paired with a deep rectangular sink is a great combination,” says Belle.

As long as there is enough depth to house appliances and plumbing, cupboard-style laundries can cleverly utilise long, narrow areas such as hallways

Cupboard style Another popular option in smaller homes is to tuck the laundry inside a cupboard, often in a hallway or other transition zone, where there’s just enough space to put a hamper, load up the washing machine and handwash a few delicates in the sink. Gabrielle Reinhardt suggests locating it in a service area out of earshot of bedrooms and living areas, preferably near an outdoor clothesline.

For ease of use, Soph and Jamie chose a small laundry inside over a larger one outside the house or in the garage

SOPH & JAMIE OF THE HOME DUO made the most of a hall nook

“After using our laundry for a while now, we realise that you don’t need a lot of space if you are smart with your design,” says Soph, who incorporated a stacked washing machine and dryer, tub and cabinets into a thoroughfare. “We wanted to ensure we had a tall cupboard, as we store a lot in there, and also a good tub with under-sink storage,” she adds.

Kaboodle Kitchen ‘Modern’ cabinet doors in Macaroon and laminate benchtop in Squid Ink.

In terms of size, a 1500mm-wide cupboard will allow for a stacked front-loader washing machine and dryer, alongside a small sink with a cupboard below. However, if you can stretch to a 2300mm- to 2500mm-wide cupboard, the additional bench and storage space is incredibly handy, particularly for families, explains Gabrielle. “Usually a depth of 650mm will ensure your appliances and laundry sink will fit comfortably with enough room for hoses to be tucked behind,” she adds. For an ultra-compact set-up, consider an all-inone washer-dryer and a petite sink and tap, with a rail installed above where you can dry a few clothes and hang ironing. A cupboard set-up is still classified as a wet area, so ensure the surrounding flooring is suitable and the sink has a splashback, and install an exhaust fan for ventilation. Cupboard doors allow you to close the zone when not in use so it’s out of sight and out of mind. Two great options are cavity doors, which retract into the wall, or bi-folds, which don’t encroach too far into a walkway. Alternatively, make a stylish statement with a chic barn door.  bunnings |

Pretty in pink

Interior stylist Hazel doesn’t spend a lot of time in her laundry, so felt she could “go design crazy”.

“The main areas of our house are quite neutral and we thought the laundry would be the perfect space to have some fun and get creative with colour!” she says. Kaboodle cabinets in Bluepea provide a fresh contrast to the rest of the light and bright space. Paired with textured tiles and a pink door with brass hardware, the room is peppered with whimsical details that make doing the washing just that bit more bearable.

A hook rack in the laundry is a handy place to hang brooms and other items

Position a hanging rail above the benchtop for extra airing space

A dedicated laundry room If you have the luxury of an entire room, you can stretch style and functionality to every corner. Great ergonomics can make washing feel less of a chore, so consider the pros and cons of stacking appliances versus a side-by-side layout. “If you want to maximise bench space, place your washer and dryer alongside each other,” recommends Gabrielle. “Take advantage of high ceilings and incorporate overhead cupboards where you can store washing powders and products out of children’s reach.” Other inclusions she suggests are a laundry chute, a tall cupboard for brooms and ironing board, baskets for each family member and a drying cupboard. ◆ bunnings.com.au |

Humble hero Making room for a laundry, that modest champion of the organised home, is easier with Clark’s space-saving products

T

he laundry is the unsung hero of a hardworking home, used for everything from soaking stained clothes to dumping mud-caked soccer boots – any grubby jobs for which you don’t want to sully your bathroom or kitchen. But if you don’t think you’ve got room for a laundry tub – or room for a laundry at all! – Clark® has the solution.

Small fry

If your dedicated laundry room is more of a cupboard, there are plenty of tricks to make the most of every inch. Stack a dryer over the washing machine, or even opt for a combined washer/dryer, if extra bench space is what matters most. Take further advantage of vertical spaces by using wall space for hooks, drying rails, shelves for stocking essentials or even luxe extras like ironing cabinets. A laundry tub, of course, is an essential feature

(just try living without one!), and Clark’s new range of petite sinks and cabinets will help you fit one in, even if your home is short on space.

also well suited to butler’s pantries – the depth that’s so great for soaking clothes also makes it ideal for dirty dishes.

Star of the show

For those lucky enough to have more room to spare, the Clark range offers plenty of practical and stylish options. The ‘Stylus’ compact trough and cabinet still has a space-saving narrow design, but a greater tub capacity of 35 litres, which is more than adequate to meet the soaking and scrubbing needs of most families. And, of course, if you’re blessed with the luxury of a large laundry – or burdened with bigger and filthier loads of washing! – Clark has you covered with wider models like the ‘Eureka’ cabinet with 45-litre tub, or the ‘Utility’ cabinet with 42-litre tub, both of which have room for soaking sheets, without taking up more than their fair share of valuable floor space.

Clark products are an ubiquitous presence in Australian homes, providing high quality kitchen and laundry solutions since 1941. Now the company is set on solving the laundry conundrum for space-challenged households. New products include two small laundry tubs, specifically designed for more bijou homes and apartments – so you don’t have to soak your smalls in the bathroom sink. The ‘Utility’ mini laundry tub with cabinet is designed to squeeze into the narrowest of spaces, with a 16-litre sink capacity that’s just large enough to cater for singles or small families. The new 25-litre square sink is not only fab for a space-saving laundry, but is

W

hile autumn is wrapping up, it’s not yet time for home gardeners to wind down. There’s still plenty of work to be done to get your garden ready for winter and blooming next spring. Besides, it’s a good time to be in your garden – the weather is cool, but the soil is warm, making conditions ideal.

Up the garden path Dry-sweep paths and hard surfaces or, if necessary, blast them with a pressure cleaner to remove dirt and grime. In sheltered areas, further treatments may be needed. “Cool, moist weather can lead to moss and algae developing, which makes areas slippery to walk on,” says Angie. Treat areas with an organic weedkiller, respraying as required.

Make the cut

Now that you can see what you’re working with, it’s time for a thorough tidy up. “Autumnblooming perennials and shrubs that have finished flowering can be trimmed back,” says horticulturist Angie Thomas (facebook.com/ angiethehappygardener). “This will help keep them tidy and promote fresh new growth.” If you live in areas with cold winters, it’s best to hold back from heavy pruning. “Tender new growth can be damaged by frosts,” says Angie.

Old into new

Give composting a go. Ideally, you’ll have a few ‘ingredients’ to start a compost heap, including suitable kitchen scraps, lawn clippings and leaves, but if you only have garden cuttings, that will do. Choose a sheltered garden spot for a ready-made bin, or construct a bin with chicken wire and star pickets, or sleepers (see Watch it!, next page). Alternate layers of leaves and clippings (cut into small pieces) with thin sprinklings of aged manure and organic fertiliser and water lightly to dampen the heap. It will slowly break down into dark, rich compost to use in spring. 

Weed it and reap Bare patches of dirt and spaces between pavers are magnets for weeds. “Get weeds under control before they have a chance to flower and set seed, creating the next generation of weeds,” says Angie. “Look for a suitable weedkiller and carefully spot spray to quickly and easily get them under control.” Spraying will ensure you kill the entire plant but if you’d rather pull them out, use a tool that gets the roots and all.

Love your lawn Feeding your lawn will make it hardier for the cooler months. While it still may brown, it will bounce back quicker in spring. Look for a slow-release lawn food that’s high in potassium; potassium strengthens cell walls, helping keep lawns healthy and resilient against pests and environmental extremes.

9

Do the groundwork Feed soil as you would plants. “It’s full of organisms like worms, microbes and fungi,” says Robyn Stewart, public relations manager at Seasol. “Feeding soil with organic matter, like compost or aged manure, keeps organisms well fed and promotes better soil structure and water-holding capacity.” Dig organic matter into the soil and work in well, or if you prefer a no-dig option, use a liquid compost product.

It’s your last chance to move or plant evergreen shrubs and perennials. “Getting plants into the ground now gives them plenty of time to establish strong, healthy roots over winter,” says Robyn. “Review your garden and see where there are gaps – consider hardy Aussie natives like correas or grevilleas, or flowering plants such as hellebores and daphnes.” Water in well with seaweed solution to help reduce transplant shock and promote root growth. ◆

Light the way Make your home shine with an illumination scheme that combines ambient, task and accent lighting

F

rom downlights and strip lighting to pendants and lamps, the wealth of choice can seem overwhelming when deciding on the right light sources for your rooms. “Too often people over- or under-compensate on the level of light needed in a space,” says Duane Shore, marketing manager at Signify. To avoid extravagant pendants crowding a small living area, or a dining room that lacks appeal, design a well-planned lighting layout that incorporates the right amounts of ambient, task and accent options. 

Plan it In the kitchen, tick off function and form by combining downlights on a dimmer with pendants above an island or table

All types of light Ambient or general lighting provides overall illumination in a space. Aim for a combination of pendant, wall, table or floor fixtures – a room with purely ambient lighting will often take on a dull, flat effect, particularly when it comes from just one source. Task lighting is a bright light that’s positioned to focus on an area of activity, like cooking or reading. In living areas and bedrooms, table or floor lamps usually do the trick; in the kitchen, popular task lighting includes recessed downlighting, under-cabinet strip lighting and pendants. Accent or mood lighting brings attention to a specific feature, like a mantelpiece, bookshelf, artwork or kitchen benchtop. It also adds texture, focus and shape to your general lighting scheme. You can use a mix of spotlights, downlights, uplights, tracks and table lamps, or a standalone lamp directed at the feature.

Once you’ve settled on a scheme for each room, the fun part begins: choosing your lights

Downlights come as either fixed (recessed in ceiling), gimbal (light can be moved) or surface-mounted (screwed into ceiling). “To avoid generic light in each room, choose downlights on a dimmer that lets you control lights individually as well as in a group,” says Duane Shore. “Many now come with switchable colour temperature outputs that let you switch between warm white (good for relaxing), daylight (good for working) and cool white (for a cool ambience).” If using downlights for task lighting, opt for a gimbal downlight with a narrow beam for precise focus. “Run this light on a separate switch or dimmer for ultimate flexibility,” says Duane.

Pendants can pull double duty as both a decorative feature and task lighting. “They’re great in bathrooms, in bedrooms as bedside lamps for reading, and suspended over dining tables or kitchen benches,” says interior designer Emma Blomfield (emmablomfield.com). “For a dramatic effect in the dining room, go as large and low as you can without blocking the view of your companions. A selection set at different heights can look amazing in a stairwell.”

Wall lamps and sconces provide a gentle wash of illumination rather than a focused pool or overhead glare. “Wall lamps and sconces are typically much more flattering on our complexion than overhead lighting, which can highlight dark circles and make us look tired,” says Emma. “This makes them ideal picks for bathrooms and hallway mirrors.” They’re also good for illuminating hallways and can help add character to a room.

Floor and table lamps are versatile (use them for task, ambient or accent lighting) and moveable; switch them around to change the look of your room or reposition them when moving furniture around. Plus, adding new floor or table lamps is a relatively inexpensive style update. “Try a table lamp in a hallway to create a welcoming glow or pair a floor lamp with a comfy chair to define a reading corner,” says Emma.

Strip lights can be used as accent or task lighting, depending on where they are installed. “In the kitchen, use strip lighting underneath cabinets to illuminate the benchtop or inside cupboards to make it easier to see,” says Duane. “Running strip lighting along skirting boards is a clever way to mark safe passageways along stairs and hallways.” For an instant mood-lifter, run strip lights behind TVs, underneath and behind couches or around shelving. 

Task lighting is a great way to highlight art work and brighten a reading nook

Photography (above) Cath Muscat, styling Tilly Roberts, styling assistant Samantha Torrisi; (left) Anna Robinson

Bring your scheme to life In the kitchen: The kitchen requires a few elements. “Install downlights throughout, then strip lighting under cabinetry or kickboards,” says Stephanie Atanasovski, lead interior designer at Porter Davis. “A large pendant light above your dining table will finish the space off nicely.” Bedroom: “Dimmable downlights are the way to go, with table lamps on either side of the bed or wall lights for the evenings,” says Stephanie. “Depending on the size of your bedroom, you may want to incorporate a floor lamp in the corner.” Living room: Continue with downlights like the kitchen, then combine with table and floor lamps for ambience at night. “If the living room is a formal space, consider a medium-sized pendant light above the coffee table,” says Stephanie. Bathroom: Combine downlights with task lighting above the vanity. Avoid recessed ceiling fixtures above the mirror – these will cast shadows on the face – and opt for vertical fixtures or sconces mounted either side of the mirror for a flattering glow. It’s important to remember that there are regulations on the position of pendants and light fittings in bathrooms and where there are water outlets.

Imagine being able to turn on your lights from the comfort of your couch at home – or even from the office. That’s the beauty of smart lighting, which lets you control your lights via the internet using apps and voice activation. “Most of the smart products on the market are plug-and-play, meaning you can DIY,” says Megan Smith, spokesperson for Amazon Alexa. To get started, simply swap out any of your existing CFL or LED bulbs with Philips Hue, LIFX Mini, WiZ or other models. Once you’ve chosen your smart lighting, decide whether you want to control your lights individually via wifi or connect everything to a smart home hub, like Google Home or Amazon Echo Dot. “Once you’re all set up, you can ask your hub to turn the lights on or off, adjust the brightness level, or even change the colour if it’s supported by the smart hub,” says Megan. “You can also set time-based routines that control the lights while you’re away, turning them on and off at set times to make your home look lived-in.” ¿

S

ometimes, you can feel as if your decor scheme is missing an indefinable ‘something’. If that’s true for you, the answer is likely to be lighting. A perfectly placed pendant, table or floor lamp in just the right style or finish can bring a whole look together and spotlight – sometimes literally – other starring elements in a room, so it’s important to get it right. Here’s how.

SHADOW BOXING

Home Design ‘Tessere’ shade, $35, I/N: 0154498

Home Design ‘Prato’ shade, $39, I/N: 0154494 Home Design ‘Pavi’ table lamp, $47, I/N: 0123716

When your light fittings are being used as a decorative element, they should look good when switched on, as well as off. Consider the way a firedup bulb will cast shadows through rippled glass, borrow colour from a jewel-toned shade or spill illumination in a focused pool. Light effects can be changed or amplified by your choice of bulb, too. Look at the colour or the light temperature of the bulb (warmer is better for all except task lighting) and consider standard versus filament bulbs – oversized decorative ones can be used to enhance a lamp or placed in a simple fitting to be a feature in their own right.

PERFECT MATCH

When making your choice, be guided by both your own personal style and the look you’re aiming to achieve. Consider the materials; opting for metals that match other pieces in the room – such as brass, copper, chrome or black – is a handy hack for a consistent design scheme. Shade materials can be simple and unobtrusive, or can tell a strong design story, from woven rattan to enhance a boho setting, or a fabric shade in an unusual pattern or colour for a classic look with a twist. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

STYLE FOR ALL

Styling with lights is a simple and effective design tool open to both owners and renters; lamps and DIY batten fix lights are an easy option for anyone, but hardwiring must be done by a licensed electrician. Best of all, ravishing, room-altering light fittings are available at every price point and within reach of any budget, allowing you to create a complete lighting scheme with multiple light sources, or to spend the money saved on one last throw rug or potted plant to make your house really feel like a home.

Update it Decorate with rugs

Rugs to riches Add warmth to a room with a cosy rug – or even a few!

P

roviding more than just softness underfoot, the right rug can work magic to tie a room together. The guidelines for choice are simple: when in doubt, go bigger – large enough that furniture can sit comfortably on the rug without catching on the edges – this is particularly important with dining chairs. Smaller rugs come into their own when layered over larger ones. Place a rug in a different shape or bold pattern over a large, neutral one, or go bold by adding different, but complementary, patterns and colours.

1

Shoes off! If you love your carpets and rugs, start a ‘shoes off’ policy. Shoes bring in dirt, which can harbour an entire ecosystem of bacteria, mould, dust mites and insects in your soft flooring, says Jo Clark, marketing manager for Kärcher. “Over time, dirt can also damage carpet fibres through abrasion,” she says.

2

Suck it up Vacuum at least once a week, if not more, especially in high-traffic areas, or if you have pets. “Vacuuming helps uplift and remove dirt, debris and bacteria from your carpet or rug, which in turn can maximise the longevity and maintain an allergen-free home,” explains Jo.

3

Vacuum correctly Selecting the right settings on your vacuum cleaner is important. These depend on the pile of the carpet or rug, but you should be able to vacuum freely and effectively without the carpet or rug lifting.

4

45

A cleaner clean Does your vacuum cleaner barely lift a hair? Clean your filter and empty the vacuum bag. “This gives you maximum air flow and better suction when vacuuming. It also eliminates dust mites and bugs from breeding inside the vacuum cleaner bag and filter,” explains Jo.

Prolong the life of your carpets with regular vacuuming and prompt attention to spills and dirt

5

Address spillages Spilt coffee or red wine? Clean it up immediately to stop it penetrating the yarn. Blot with water to start – don’t rub, as this can cause damage. If you’re too late, try a speciality product such as No Vac instant spot and stain remover, which is formulated to work on old as well as new stains.

6

Go deep Deep cleaning carpets and rugs can help to get rid of stubborn dirt, stains, pet hair and potentially harmful mites. Clean once or twice a year depending on your lifestyle. And if there are smokers in your house, deep clean more often – around every three months – to reduce smoke toxins, adds Jo.

7

Sticky stuff... Deal with chewing gum on carpets and rugs using the ice cube trick. Place an ice cube or ice pack on the gum. Once it has hardened, carefully peel it off the fibres.

...and icky stuff No matter how well trained your pet is, accidents happen! Odour sets in fast when urine dries, and it stains. Try a mixture of white vinegar, water and baking soda to help remove it. Brush with glory

P

ainting is a fantastic way to transform a room in a weekend, is very satisfying to DIY and is totally achievable for even a novice – but it helps to know where to start. Read these top tips before picking up a brush. Well prepared Clean your walls with sugar soap to help the new paint adhere and prevent marks showing through. Once the walls are dry, use a scraper to remove any flaky bits. Fill any cracks or dings in the wall with gap filler. Mix it according to the directions, apply it to the Use paint cards, wall with the paint swatches and sample scraper, then allow pots to help choose to dry and sand it your colour scheme smooth. For cracks in the corners, apply a gap sealant with a caulking gun, then wipe over with a damp rag to smooth. Sanding the walls will give you an even surface, while giving trims a light sand means new paint will adhere better. Use coarser abrasive paper (40 to 80 grit) to start on a really rough surface, but 120 grit is perfect for most jobs. Wearing safety gear (a dust mask and safety glasses), sand by hand with a sanding block or use a power sander – orbital sanders are fine for plasterboard but will leave marks on woodwork. Regularly check the paper and replace it when it gets clogged with dust. Paint particulars Ceilings are painted in a water-based flat paint (usually white, but you could try a lighter tint of your wall colour), while walls also get water-based paint but with a hint of sheen. Water- or oil-based enamel gives doors and trims a glossy, hardier surface. Figure out how much paint you need before you visit the store. One litre covers

about 16 square metres, but the tin will state coverage. Add undercoat to your shopping list if you’re painting new walls or over a darker colour. Stock up on equipment, too. You’ll need brushes for cutting in and for woodwork, and a roller and paint tray for tackling large areas. Also an extension pole, a ladder, plenty of drop sheets and painter’s tape. Order of service Clear the room as much as you can, then use drop sheets to cover floors and any furniture that can’t be moved – your future self will thank you for doing this properly! Use painter’s tape to mask power points. The order in which you paint a room is up for debate, but a general rule is to start with the ceiling. Give your paint a really good stir, then transfer some into a small container that you can easily take up a ladder. Use a brush to cut in the edges of the ceiling and around light fittings. Use a roller to paint the large areas of the ceiling, taking care not to overload the roller (think

drips!). Let it dry, then do a second coat. Professionals are likely to do trims next, followed by walls. Novices, though, are far more likely to send splatters flying off the roller when they paint the walls – thus it’s better to get the messy walls out of the way first, following the same method as with the ceiling. Wait for the walls to dry completely, tape them up and tackle the trims last. Give them a light sand between coats for a lovely finish. Carefully peel off the painter’s tape and you’re done, ready to move furniture back in and style your fresh new room. ◆

Keep your home toasty warm this winter – find the right inside solution for you from this selection

Tree change Modern wood burners offer the ambience of a fireplace, but with greater efficiency. There are three main types: freestanding wood-burning stoves with glass panels, fireplace inserts and pellet fires (which burn recycled wood pellets, and can be freestanding or inserts). Freestanding wood-burning and pellet stoves create radiant heat. “The closer you are to the fire, the warmer you get, which is why radiant heaters are preferred by those who like open-plan living and like to ‘feel’ the fire while watching the flames,” says Bruce Bott, Scandia group territory manager. “But remember you always need to consider national requirements for clearances from combustible items.” Fireplace and pellet inserts are convection heaters, heating the air around them, which rises to the ceiling. “Convection wood fires are great for multiple rooms that ‘push’ hot air around providing a very consistent, controllable ambient warmth throughout the home,” says Bruce. Australia has tough standards for wood burners, with emission limits and energy efficiency requirements. Only approved models can be installed – and always get them installed professionally.

In the air Wall, window and split-system are the most common forms of non-ducted air conditioning, and ‘reverse cycle’ models can be used to both heat and cool a house. Electric dreams For smaller, contained spaces, electric heaters are portable, cost-effective options. There are four main types: radiant, fan, convection/panel and oil column. Radiant heaters feature a red-hot heating element or ‘bar’ – a wall-mounted model is a sound option for a bathroom, but do not use one in a bedroom – and infrared versions. A great bathroom choice is a 3-in-1 infrared ceiling heat lamp, which provides instant warmth and multi-tasks as an LED light and extractor fan. Small and very portable fan heaters are good for short-term use in a room such as a study. Convection/panel heaters draw in air over a heating element; the warmed air then rises upwards. These are not suited for rooms with high ceilings, or where there is a lot of ventilation. Finally, there are oil columns, which heat a fuel source in their ‘fins’; the heat then transfers to the air around the columns. They’re safe to operate over long periods, making them a suitable choice for the bedroom.

Burning desire Fire pits and chimeneas are the most common wood-burning options and add the atmosphere of a campfire to an outdoor space. The most important factor regarding outdoor wood burners is safety, says Jacqueline Hughes, product manager at Glow. “Do not use them on or close to decking or any other flammable surfaces, or grass, leaves or furniture,” she advises. “You must ensure that the unit is stable, and never leave the fire unattended. The most suitable surfaces on which to situate a fire pit or chimenea are brick, stone, gravel and concrete.” }

Fix it Gas station Anyone who’s eaten alfresco at a restaurant during winter months will be familiar with freestanding column gas heaters. These are one of the larger options for home use, but gas heaters can be wall-mounted, too, saving floor space and increasing safety. Portable versions run off a gas bottle, while their wall-mounted relatives are connected

to a home’s natural gas supply. Your alfresco space will need to be well ventilated if you’re using a gas heater, advises Stephen Read of Fiammetta Australia. “If you have a covered outdoor area, ensure it’s an ‘Outdoor Area’ as defined in the instruction manual to ensure safe operation, and always maintain the required clearance distances to combustible materials,” he says.

Switched on Slimline and unobtrusive, electric strip heaters are mounted on the ceiling or wall of an outdoor space, and give off radiant heat, gently warming anything below them. The primary consideration, says Heatstrip national sales manager Greg Trezise, is height. “Our ‘Classic’ and ‘Elegance’ models should ideally be mounted overhead, between 2.2m and 2.5m off the ground, with maximum 2.7m,” he explains. “That will heat an area of between five and seven square metres.” Mounting height and heating area vary between models, so check the manufacturer’s instructions. Other electric options include freestanding heaters in striking contemporary designs. Just remember that any hard-wired electrical fixtures must be installed by a qualified electrician. ¿

The good wood

Five tips for buying, storing and using firewood

1

The drier the wood, the better. “You want your fire energy to focus on burning to generate heat, not drying the wood,” says Jacqueline Hughes. Aim for a moisture content of between 15 and 20 per cent (you can measure this with a moisture meter). Hardwoods are better than soft. “Soft woods burn faster, and let off excessive smoke, meaning you’re going to go through more, as well as pollute the air more,” says Jacqueline. Use sustainably forested timber. “Jarrah and wandoo are best for those in Western Australia; brown peppermint in Tasmania; ironbark and box in Queensland; and river red in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales,” says Jacqueline. Avoid wood that has been painted, pressure-treated or stained. “You should also steer clear of driftwood, plywood and particle board as they can release toxins into the air,” adds Jacqueline. The Firewood Association of Australia advises storing your firewood in a well-ventilated, covered location, stacked on a pallet, bricks or plastic to prevent moisture from being drawn up into the timber. Never stack firewood against your house, as it can provide a ‘bridge’ for termites.

Important health and safety info

Safety is paramount. Before you begin, you should make your own enquiries and obtain advice on all aspects of safety in relation to installing insulation in your home. Although not exhaustive, some of the important safety instructions are as follows. Consult a qualified electrician to check the condition of wiring and check for leaking pipes in your roof, and make any necessary repairs. Be aware of the risk of asbestos in houses built up to 1990 – for information on the dangers of, and dealing with, asbestos, contact your local council’s Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health and Safety page at bunnings.com.au/health-and-safety. Turn all the power off at the mains before you start. Read the instructions on the insulation product you’re using and be aware of any applicable regulations. If you are unsure about any aspect of the installation, you may feel it is safest to consult a qualified tradesperson.

nsulating your home can make it more energy efficient by helping to maintain a comfortable indoor air temperature, whatever the season. Simon Croft, executive director of building policy at the Housing Industry Association (HIA), says, “By reducing their reliance on artificial cooling and heating, homeowners can reduce their energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.” Good insulation can also create a quieter home. “Glass wool insulation can help by reducing noise from external sources, like traffic, and internal sources, like the TV and laundry,” says Claire Cunliffe, marketing manager at Earthwool. Whether your home is old or new, it’s worth inspecting the insulation. Some old homes will have none or very little. New-build homes are often insulated to the minimum National Construction Code (NCC) requirements, and internal walls for acoustic performance are often overlooked, says Claire. “Installing additional insulation is one of the most energy-efficient upgrades you can do yourself,” she adds. However, you do need to obtain safety advice relevant to installing insulation in your home and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If in doubt, engage a qualified tradie to do the job instead. Choosing insulation “There are two main types of insulation in Australia, reflective [foil] and bulk [batts],” says Simon. At times, these are combined. “Reflective insulation resists radiant heat due to its high reflectivity. Bulk insulation [batts] is typically made of glass fibre, wool or polyester, and works by trapping air within its structure,” he says. Both batts and foil can be used in the home, meeting the R-value required by the National Construction Code, says building and construction consultant Klaas Tigchelaar. “Batts are designed to be cut and fitted exactly between two adjacent studs and noggins, and foil is a wraparound product which, apart from its R-value, works as a barrier against wind, dust and insects,” he says. The R-value indicates how well insulation performs at reducing heat transfer. Generally, the higher the R-value, the better the insulation will perform. When choosing batts, check dimensions, including the depth of the space they’re going into. Use 90mm-thick batts in 90mm studs.

Don’t try to squeeze this thickness into 70mm studs or it will compress and affect the performance of the insulation. It’s important to get a good fit and that there are no unnecessary gaps in the insulation. Installing batts Insulation can be installed as a DIY project, if you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If in doubt, leave it to the professionals. “For ceilings, you could be exposed to dangerous electrical cables,” says Klaas. “If doing it yourself, turn off all electricity at your fuse box and use torches to see what you’re doing.” When laying batts, remember that downlights/transformers need space all round so they don’t overheat. Check the

What do you need?

Safety is always a priority, so if you’re fitting insulation yourself, ensure you wear the right protective gear. “Appropriate personal protection equipment – gloves, dust masks, protective eyewear and protective clothing – is critical,” says Simon. Take care not to overheat, too. Work during the coolest part of the day, drink water and wear suitable clothing. Other items you need:  a sharp knife for cutting batts  a tape measure  a straight edge  a sturdy ladder  a work light.

manufacturer’s instructions to ensure you leave the right amount of clearance, and remember not to block ceiling vents. When fitting batts, ensure there are no air gaps, and that the batts fit well without being forced into the space. “The insulation works by trapping pockets of air,” Klaas explains. To cut the batts, you’ll need a straight edge to ensure a straight cut, and a sharp knife to slice through cleanly. You may need to squash the insulation to cut it; it will then recover its volume. Reflective notes Foil insulation can be fitted in most roofs and wrapped around wall framing. It’s more usually installed when building from scratch or doing a major renovation that involves stripping the house back to the bare bones, and installing it is a job best left to experienced and qualified tradies. For safety reasons, foil should not be put on top of the ceiling or on ceiling joists where electrical cables are lying and must be kept clear of electrical wiring and fittings. ◆

“Renovating for me is quite meditative and relaxing when it’s going well” Poppy Lee homeowner

hen Poppy and her husband Ryan bought a 70s two-bedroom brick home six years ago, they immediately began planning a transformative renovation and extension. “The house was tiny, but it had a big backyard, so our plan was to extend into the backyard, add a level and essentially build a house on the back of a house,” explains Poppy. Thoroughly involved and hands on throughout every aspect of the project, the couple have completed a lot of the fit-out and finishes

themselves. For Poppy, spending time on the tools, painting, problem solving and developing DIY hacks has been immensely satisfying. “Doing a lot of the work ourselves meant we could get a larger home more cost effectively, and while it’s been a process of trial and error, I’ve really built up the confidence to give things a go,” she says. Along the way Poppy has documented her renovation triumphs, challenges and tips via @hellopoppylee and her blog, hellopoppylee.com. Now it’s an absolute luxury to walk into the wardrobe and easily grab whatever I need, and being quite large, it’s almost like a dressing area as well.” Poppy opted for a mix and match Multistore wardrobe storage solution, which she organised through the Special Orders Desk. Poppy’s top three storage tips

Matching hangers make for a consistent look. “This helps clothes hang at the same height and enhances the neat, organised feel.” Timber hangers are an inexpensive way to add luxury.

2

Group your clothes. “I’ve got a hanging section devoted to dresses, a section for jackets and another for skirts and long pants. As most days I’m in denim, renovating, I like to keep folded jeans and shorts on open shelves for easy access.”

3

Utilise wicker baskets to store seasonal clothes on high shelves. Use pull-out fabric baskets in shoe alcoves to organise accessories, socks and scarves.

CRAFT TIP

A

popular pastime in the 70s, macramé is enjoying a renaissance. We show you how to master the technique with these two hanger projects designed for smaller pots. One is for absolute beginners while the other can be tackled by more confident crafters. The measurements we’ve given are a guide only and can be tailored – for consistency, use your first worked cords to measure the rest against. You’ll be weaving and knotting in no time!

WHAT YOU NEED

 Cotton shop twine  Tape measure
  Scissors
 30mm key ring (for the fancy pot holder)

SUPER-EASY POT HOLDER

1

Measure and cut four 3m and two 50cm lengths of cotton twine. Hold all four 3m cords together and fold in half, then hang by the fold over a coat hook to form eight hanging cords. From the fold, measure 9cm, then secure the cords together using a 50cm cord with a wrap knot from this point. You will need to wrap the cord around at least eight times for this to be secure, but a longer wrap knot looks best! Trim leftover wrap knot cord.

2

Divide all eight hanging cords into four sections of two each. Starting with one section, measure 20cm down from the base of the wrap knot, hold both cords together and tie an overhand knot at this point. Repeat this step with the remaining three sections.
Select one strand from one overhand knot, and one strand from an adjacent overhand knot. Measure 10cm from the existing knots and tie another overhand knot with both cords at this point, creating an inverted V. Repeat with the remaining sections.
Hold all hanging cords together again, and measure 3cm from the last overhand knot. Secure at this point using the last 50cm cord to tie a wrap knot.
Trim leftover wrap knot cord, and trim hanging cords to 30-35cm to create a long tassel. Insert pot (up to 12.5cm diameter).

Cotton twine looks beautifully rustic but has a tendency to tangle. For your first attempt, you might want to use nylon builder’s line, which is easier to work with

same knot until you reach your starting point. Hang the ring, end cords down, from a coat hook.
Hold all six 5m cords together, thread through the key ring and fold in half, so the key ring rests in the middle point to form 12 hanging cords.
Secure the 12 hanging cords and leftover cords from the key ring together using a 1m cord with a wrap knot close to the key ring. You will need to wrap the cord at least eight times for this to be secure. Trim leftover wrap knot cord.
Separate two hanging cords on each side and hold together to form pairs of working cords, leaving eight filler cords. Using spiral stitch, work down the filler cords for 15cm. Divide all 12 cords into three sections of four each. Starting with one section, separate two cords to form working cords, leaving two filler cords. Measure 5cm down from the base of the last spiral stitch. From this point, using spiral stitch, work down the filler cords for 7cm. On the same section, measure another 7cm down from the base of the last spiral stitch. From this point, using spiral stitch, work down the filler cords for 3cm. point, using spiral stitch, work down the filler cords for 5cm. You should now have a section of 5cm blank, 7cm spiral stitch, 7cm blank, 3cm spiral stitch, 3cm blank, 5cm spiral stitch. Repeat with the remaining two sections.
Select two cords from one section and two cords from an adjacent section. Measure 5cm from the last spiral stitch, and tie a square knot at this point using the two outside cords as working cords and the centre two as filler cords. Repeat with the other two sections until there are three square knots. Select two cords from one section and two cords from an adjacent section. Measure 5cm from the last square knot, and tie another square knot at this point using the two outside cords as working cords and the centre two as filler cords, creating a diamond shape. Repeat with the other two sections until there are 3 diamonds.
Hold all cords together again and measure 3cm from the last square knot. Secure all cords together using the last 50cm cord to tie a wrap knot.
Trim leftover wrap knot cord, and trim hanging cords to 30-35cm to create a long tassel. Insert pot (up to 10cm diameter). ◆

Make it

irror-effect spray paint gives plain glass a glamorous reflective surface in an instant. We used it to turn a glass-panelled cabinet door into a decorative feature, but you can also use the mirror spray to transform other glass or acrylic glass objects; try it inside vases or pots and on the reverse side of doors (for interior use only and not suitable for food vessels).

Mirror effect makeover

PRO TIP When using spray paint, always wear a mask and gloves and work outside or in a well-ventilated area, covering the surrounding surfaces with a drop cloth to avoid overspray

TOOLS & MATERIALS

Turn a simple glass-paned cabinet door – salvaged or new – into a mirror-effect feature with this DIY project

1

To paint the front frame of the door, apply painter’s tape around the inside of the glass panels, ensuring the ends overlap at the corners. Use a utility knife to trim around the panel where the frame meets the glass to remove excess tape, then smooth down the edges by running the tape roll over them.

bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

2

Cut pieces of cardboard offcuts to fit into the panels, taping to ensure the glass is covered. Hold the metallic spray can 25cm from the surface and apply a light coat in a back-and-forth motion. Leave to dry for about 15 minutes, apply a second coat and leave to dry thoroughly.

3

Remove the cardboard and painter’s tape. Clean the glass on both sides with glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth, polishing the back to ensure it’s clean and dry. Tip: This door is constructed with one solid piece of glass at the back. If using an older door with separate panels, tape the frame to prevent overspray.

4

With the back of the door facing up, apply a very light coat of mirror-effect spray, holding the can 25cm from the surface and moving in a back-and-forth motion. Leave to dry for one minute, then repeat up to three times and leave to dry thoroughly. (Watch the transformation to mirror as the second coat is applied!) ◆

Plant pick

Outside in Bring greenery into your home with a striking and easy-care indoor plant. These plants also thrive outside in tropical climates, but grow bigger. Monstera The perfect statement for your home, but ensure you have room, as it grows up and spreads out. Tie to a moss or coir pole for support and place in a bright room, out of direct sunlight. Mist leaves every couple of days to avoid browning leaf tips. Cut unruly stems back to control growth and re-pot every two or three years. Flamingo flower A jewel among indoor plants, flamingo flower features vibrant spathes (blooms). When not in flower, the arrow-shaped dark-green leaves take centrestage. It will grow in rooms with low light, but does better in bright areas. Water when the soil is near dry and feed with liquid fertiliser in the warmer months.

The glossy leaves become lobed and perforated as the plant matures, which is why it’s often called ‘Swiss cheese plant’.

Known for their brightly coloured waxy blooms in red, pink, white or burgundy, which appear at various times in the year.

Chinese evergreen

Rubber plant

Rubber plant Take your indoor garden to new heights with the tree-like habit of the rubber plant. It can grow up to 2.5m tall and its broad, glossy, dark-green leaves are a striking feature, especially against a white or monochrome wall. It is incredibly tolerant of low light, but performs better if it can enjoy bright, indirect light. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants
