Time flies when you’re having fun, and this month marks the 30th anniversary of Australia’s first purpose-built Bunnings Warehouse store in Sunshine, Victoria. A milestone well worth celebrating!

The opening of that first Warehouse introduced Aussies – and later New Zealanders – to a dramatically different DIY experience, and now there are 351 stores across Australia and New Zealand.

It all began in 1886, when new arrivals from England, brothers Arthur and Robert Bunning, bought their first sawmill in Western Australia. The company expanded to building supplies and hardwood in the early 1950s, to supply the housing construction industry. And then came the warehouse rollout in the 1990s, making home improvements accessible to all. Who could have predicted the online retail explosion, the uptake of Click & Collect, the apps that support shopping today – and the enthusiasm for DIY?

Through it all, the mission of providing the widest range of products, the lowest prices and the best experience has remained unchanged. And while it’s impossible to put a number on the sausages sizzled out front of stores, last year’s barbecues in support of community groups totalled 28,614! (Turn the page for more fun anniversary facts.)

In compiling this month’s magazine, we popped a few more snags on the barbie at our Father’s Day photo shoot – and there are loads of ideas to set up a special day (September 1), from easy DIYs to outdoor fun and gift inspo. We know you’ll love the handiwork of Bunnings Workshop regulars Cheryl and Gilbert, who stamped their new project home with personality and style (page 22). And if you’re in the mood for a garden update, don’t miss our trends report (page 38), with new planting and landscaping tips to make your own.

Enjoy the issue!

ANNIVERSARY

Bunnings Warehouse turns 30!

When Bunnings Warehouse in Sunshine, Victoria, first opened 30 years ago, Kylie Hynds (right) was on the original team. “There was so much hype around the opening of Sunshine,” she recalls. “Even before we opened, in the midst of preparations we had customers knocking on the doors asking when they could come in!” And when they did enter, the customers were amazed. “There was nothing like a Bunnings Warehouse at the time and they just hadn’t seen anything on this scale before,” she says. Kylie, who works in Sunshine’s nursery, counts many long-standing customers – as well as other team members – as friends. “My favourite thing about working at Bunnings is the friendships with my teammates,” she says. “There are people here who are like family to me; we know that we are always there for each other.” Bunnings now has almost 54,000 team members across 351 stores in Australia and New Zealand. And, collectively, they speak 72 different languages. That’s a lot of ways to say ‘sausage sizzle’!

IN THE GARDEN August

Plant potatoes, tee up tomatoes and try this trusty hydrangea hack

It’s spud time!

Grow them in the garden, pots or specialised grow bags. Buy certified disease-free seed potatoes in store and plant into welldraining soil enriched with compost.

Get a head start on tomatoes by growing indoors. Sow seeds into trays or biodegradable pots filled with quality seed-raising mix. Position on a sunny windowsill and water regularly to keep the soil moist. Once the weather warms up, plant outside.

In warm areas, fertilise pots and garden beds, and top up layers of mulch. Indoor plants and outdoor container plants can also be repotted into fresh potting mix. In other zones, wait until next month to feed, mulch and repot.

Apply a specialised tonic to hydrangeas to intensify or change their flower colour.

Sow tomato seeds indoors now to enjoy a crop by Christmas

Note that this only works for pink or blue hydrangeas – these tonics alter the pH of the soil, making it either slightly acidic, which leads to blue flowers, or more alkaline, which turns them pink.

After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

PLANT PROFILE

Classy and grassy

Add interest and texture to pots and garden beds with these strappy specimens

Sedge

A hardy, lowmaintenance plant with narrow, variegated green and white or gold foliage. Perfect for softening the edges of paths.

Mat rush

Highly adaptable, this native rush can grow in sandy to heavy clay soils. Available in sizes from 30cm to 1.8m tall.

Blue tussock grass

This native develops clumps of fine, bluegreen foliage. It tolerates most soil types and needs little care once established.

TOOL OF THE MONTH

Make tiresome garden tasks oh-so-satisfying with a lightweight weed puller. The clever ergonomic design of this tool can help save your back and knees when weeding. And as those pesky plants come out, roots ‘n’ all, you’ll avoid the use of chemicals, too!

CLEANING HACK

Tablet time

Short on cupboard space for your floor cleaning products? Replace bulky plastic containers of liquid cleaners with slim packs of cleaning tablets. These convenient little parcels are premeasured and water soluble – just dissolve in a bucket of water (check manufacturer’s instructions for quantity). And as some tablets use powerful enzymes to bust through dirt and grime, you can reduce chemical usage as well as single-use plastic.

PLANT PARENT Spidey sense

What’s in your pot? Chlorophytum comosum, known as a spider plant.

Plant name: ‘Spidey’

Age: About three years.

Climate: An inner-city bathroom.

Plant parent: Lorna

How long have you been caring for your plant?

Since it was a tiny spider baby.

Where did you get it? An offshoot from a garden bed at a house where I used to live.

Where does it live? In a planter made from a stainless steel kitchen bowl that had seen better days, hanging from my shower curtain rail in front of the window.

Best feature: The spider babies!

Care regime: Weekly watering and regular misting with a spray bottle.

Secret hack: I have three spider plants, and every couple of months I rotate them between my balcony (for rain and more sun) and the bathroom to help keep them healthy.

Something that may surprise people about spider plants is: They are sensitive to the fluoride in tap water in some areas, which can turn the tips of the leaves brown. They prefer rainwater, so put a bucket out during storms, or give them filtered water. ●

n Follow manufacturer’s instructions for setting up and using your barbecue. Position barbecue on a flat, clear and well-ventilated space outdoors and never leave a lit barbecue unattended.

n Before using a gas barbecue, check the gas hose – do not use if it is crushed, kinked or cracked – and also that your LPG cylinder is in date.

n Check with your local fire service about using barbecues during restrictions such as fire bans. Keep children and pets away from barbecues and gas cylinders and put matches and lighters out of children’s reach.

WHERE THEY LIVE

A modern project home in southeast Melbourne. WHEN THEY GOT THE KEYS December 2021 WHAT THEY DID

The couple has enhanced many aspects of the property with handmade elements and furniture.

Secret storage

Cheryl created a concealed cupboard in a cavity wall

Renovations and DIY projects are often associated with older homes, but for Cheryl (Bunnings Workshop community member @ourcountrycoast) and her husband, Gilbert, their newly built project home offered the perfect blank canvas to add their own creative touch in a big way. “We were initially going to live here for a few years and sell, but instead we decided to stay and turn it into our long-term family home,” explains Cheryl, of their property on the outskirts of Melbourne not far from the beach. “When we started looking around for furnishings and getting quotes from trades the costs were huge, so we started off bit by bit trying to do things ourselves and have just kept going,” she adds.

PUT IT TO THE PANEL

Cheryl, who describes herself as storage obsessed, set about creating practical, stylish DIY solutions. Inspiration struck to transform a protruding cavity wall in the living area. “I like to add storage everywhere, so we cut a hole in it, put in shelving and clad it with MDF, which we finished with acoustic panels. I’d seen them

They were installed using black screws and black silicone from Bunnings,” she explains. “I love how it turned out. It’s great for storing extra cushions, throws and toys, and has made a feature out of an otherwise plain wall.”

In the laundry, Cheryl built cabinetry using white melamine particle board finished with neat iron-on edging. The storage wall includes open shelves (adjustable shelf pins allow for easy reconfiguration), drawers and bespoke pull-out drying racks made from Porta dowels using Goliath 400mm soft close runners – all sourced from Bunnings.

LIVING THE DREAM

Constantly contemplating new building techniques and materials to add interior features, Cheryl is in the midst of planning future projects, including a hallway glow-up involving beams and VJ wall linings to highlight the raked ceiling. “Dreaming up things we can create has become a real passion, and because we’ve put so much of ourselves into the place it’s all the more special to us,” she says.

SMART THINKING

As well as personalised aesthetic touches, Cheryl and Gilbert have enhanced their home with clever tech for convenient family living. At the front of the house, the gate has a keyless smart lock, while a Eufy solar-powered spotlight/camera on the pergola and video doorbell add extra security.

LOVE YOUR FLOORS

Floor it!

Give your underfoot surfaces the care they need for a longer life and fresher feel

Muddy shoes and sandy feet, paw prints, spills, crumbs and tumbleweeds of dust and pet hair – floors can cop a lot of wear and tear on a very expensive surface. The weekly whip-round with the vacuum and mop takes care of the worst of the dirt, but a seasonal deep clean is the extra step your floors will thank you for, taking your home to a next level of clean and extending the life of your surfaces.

RIGHT ON SCHEDULE

To keep your floors in tip-top shape, stick to a regular weekly routine of vacuuming carpets, and vacuuming or sweeping and mopping hard floors. High-use rooms, such as kitchens and bathrooms, might need more frequent attention. Tackle spills and stains as soon as they happen. Then aim for a deep clean at least once a year, advises Donna White of Britex Carpet Care. “If you have kids or pets, or if anyone in the household has allergies, every six months would be ideal,” she says. With good organisation, a deep clean of all your floor surfaces can be done in a weekend. Start by getting your gear ready – steam cleaners can be hired for 24 or 48 hours from the Hire Shop in store‡. Open all doors and windows to speed up drying time. Begin with carpeted rooms, then do the hard surfaces, leaving thoroughfares until last to avoid cleaning yourself into a corner. Plan to be out of the home afterwards –about four hours should do it.

LONG-LIFE STRATEGIES

Not all surfaces are created equal. Here are the best ways to keep each different type of flooring material fresh and hygienic.

TIMBER

Solid timber floors can last for generations, but they need a little love to stay looking good. Sweep or vacuum regularly to prevent dust and dirt scratching the surface, and use the hard floor setting on the vacuum to turn off the brush roll. The greatest threat to your timber floor’s longevity is water, so mop with a damp microfibre mop, which holds less water than other types, says Bunnings national cleaning buyer Mario Mathuranayagam. “Be careful how much water you use when mopping. Excessive water on hardwood can cause swelling and can damage the timber stain if left to sit,”

Use the brush attachment on your vacuum for dust-free skirting boards

he adds. While water alone is more than enough for day-to-day cleaning, Mario recommends a timber-specific floor cleaner to preserve the wood. “A product such as Long Life timber floor cleaner will remove grime without leaving any residue,” he says.

CARPET

Candice Cooke of cleaning technology specialist Kärcher Australia advises vacuuming carpets and rugs at least once a week to keep them in good condition. “This will keep your carpet looking good for longer and will also ensure hygiene,” she explains. “Dust can settle deep into the fibres of

ON THE EDGE

Skirting boards are dust catchers, especially those with ornate profiles. For an extra-fresh deep clean, use a solution of warm water and mild detergent or a splash of cleaning vinegar and wipe them down by hand. Use a toothbrush or crevice tool to get into corners and polish them dry with a microfibre cloth.

carpets, holding onto pollutants and bacteria.” Steam cleaners can be used periodically to give your carpet a refresh and – hot tip – they’re also great for lifting dents caused by furniture legs! Use a deep-cleaning machine periodically – about every six to 12 months. This is different from a steam cleaner, says Donna. “It uses the power of hot-water extraction to deep-clean carpets, rugs, upholstery, car interiors and even floor tiles and grout. Regular deep cleaning helps remove bacteria, dirt, allergens and stains that build up over time. It can also freshen up carpet,” she says.

Shift your furniture periodically to prevent uneven wear and tear on your carpets

Start with a good vacuum, using the crevice tool to vacuum the edges of the carpet and around furniture. You could choose to remove furniture from the room entirely, but it’s not necessary. “The Britex 3in1 deep cleaning machine has an interchangeable manoeuvrable wand system, making it easy to get under furniture to get optimum results,” says Donna White. To make the job easier, shift small items like side tables.

To help ensure your carpets age gracefully, tackle stains fast. Use a chemical carpet-cleaning product, following the instructions carefully to avoid damaging the fibres. A spot cleaner, like the Kärcher SE 3-18 Ultra Clean, makes the job even easier.

“When paired with Kärcher detergents, you can easily remove stains from deep within the fibres of carpets and upholstery,” says Candice Cooke. “Simply spray the detergent onto the stain, leave it for a few minutes to work its magic and break down the dirt, then suck away the dirt with the powerful suction nozzle.”

LAMINATE

While known for its durability, laminate doesn’t like an excess of water, which can seep under the planks and damage the layers beneath the surface. “Never use a steam cleaner or a dripping-wet mop, which can easily damage laminate,” says Mario Mathuranayagam. “Instead, use a damp cloth to blot spills immediately, as standing liquid causes laminate to bubble and swell.”

For both laminate and timber floors, applying a floor polish product will give the surface added protection and a high-gloss finish. To do this, use a cleaning product like Long Life

cloudy ammonia, which will strip off any existing waxy residue, then follow it up with a suitable floor polish.

VINYL

For durability and ease of maintenance, vinyl scores top marks – simply sweep and mop it regularly. Steam mops are great for family homes, giving a hygienic clean without chemicals, and because vinyl isn’t affected by water, it’s ideal for steam cleaning.

Layer up

Use rugs to protect fitted carpet in high-traffic areas

“The natural force of steam eliminates 99.99 per cent of germs and bacteria without using any harsh chemicals,” says Candice. “With attachments for almost every cleaning task, Kärcher steam cleaners are more versatile than traditional cleaning tools.” When it comes to cleaning products, Mario says never use soap, wax or oil-based detergents on vinyl flooring, as they can tend to dull the finish and leave a greasy film.

JUST ADD WATER

Afreshly mopped floor is always satisfying, a sign that your home is sparkling clean and well cared for. Thankfully, Vileda’s clever new PACS Floor Cleaning Tablets make it easier and more convenient to enjoy that spruced-up feeling in any room.

Simply pop one of the tablets in a bucket full of water and you’re ready to mop. Unlike some detergent products, these tablets are safe to use on hardfloor surfaces including timber, tiles and vinyl, and the formula cuts through grime and spills to leave a beautiful, streak-free finish.

Say no to messy measuring…

Don't be fooled by the small size. Each PACS tablet is pre-measured to contain exactly the right amount of concentrated cleaning powder for your floors. Take the guesswork out of mopping – you’ll never use too much or not enough liquid cleaner again.

Tablets take this to the next level, with a formula that’s made from 97 per cent naturally derived ingredients. They harness the cleaning power of natural enzymes to safely cut through grease and grime, without the need for chemical detergents. This makes them safe to use on all hard-floor surfaces, and gives you peace of mind if you have kids or pets at home.

Say yes to a pick-me-up for all your senses…

A clean home doesn’t just look spick and span, it feels welcoming and delights all the senses. PACS Floor Cleaning Tablets are available in two scents inspired by nature – there’s calming Lavender or uplifting Spring Fresh, so you can choose the one that best suits the style of your home.

… and good-bye to nasty chemicals

Vileda has always been a leader in effective cleaning without the use of harsh chemicals. PACS Floor Cleaning

You'll have more room in your kitchen or laundry cabinets without bulky bottles of liquid floor cleaner. These tablets are lightweight and compact so they take up minimal storage space, making them perfect for smaller homes or apartments.

TILES

Tiled floors are easy to keep in shape – all they need is regular sweeping and a mop with water alone or a tile-safe detergent (avoid those with ammonia, which can discolour grout). But the grout in between is a different story, as mopping actually pushes dirt into the gaps between the tiles. Steam mops can help prevent this issue. “A steam mop is a good choice because it cleans and sanitises tiles without leaving behind streaks. And because steam cleaners use only water, they won’t damage the grout,” says Mario Mathuranayagam.

The Britex grout and tile wand – used in conjunction with the Britex 3in1 deep cleaning machine – is perfect for removing grubby marks from tiles, says Donna White. “This takes the backbreaking effort out of cleaning floor tiles and grout. Use it with Britex grout and tile cleaner, which is formulated to remove

build-up from grout as well as leaving your tiles looking cleaner, and for stubborn stains use Britex grout and tile spray as a pre-treatment,” she advises. Extra care is needed for natural stone tiles. Like marble, stone is more porous than other surfaces, so you’ll need to jump on spills and stains straight away, using a mild detergent. Never use vinegar or other acidic cleaners. Stone floors should be sealed for protection – then you will be able to use a steam cleaner on them. ●

When a plant is in flower or fruit, it needs regular feeding

YFOOD FOR THOUGHT

Are you feeding your plants the right nutrients to help them thrive?

Yates Dynamic Lifter has targeted solutions to take any guesswork out of gardening

ou are what you eat, and the same is true for plants. But while every plant needs ongoing nourishment, the type of nutrients and frequency of feeding can vary. We spoke to horticulturist Angie Thomas at Yates to find out more about the three-step plant-food diet.

The best start

No matter what you’re planting, always prepare the soil by enriching it first. “It’s essential to give soil all the nutrients needed to help your plants thrive,” explains Angie, who recommends using Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food & Soil Improver

For a single tree or bush, add a handful of soil improver directly into the hole before planting. If you’re working on a garden bed, mix it through the soil in the whole area. “With Dynamic Lifter, you can improve the soil and plant straightaway, there’s no need to wait,” she says.

Feeding time

In the ground, plants need regular nourishment. Angie says a good guide is to feed them any time they're “doing something”. In other words, if it's growing, flowering or producing vegies or fruits, it will need feeding every six to eight weeks.

The new plant-specific Yates Dynamic Lifter Plant Food Pellets are ideal for this. “They have a combination of slow-release nutrients from organic matter such as chicken manure to improve soil over

the long term, and fast-acting nutrients to feed plants in the short term. Basically, they help plants run a marathon and a sprint at the same time,” says Angie. They come in three different varieties: fruit and citrus; roses and flowers; and tomatoes, vegies and herbs. Each one is carefully blended to include the right balance of nutrients to meet that particular plant’s unique needs.

Mix the pellets through a garden bed or, for trees, bushes and shrubs, mix them into the soil around the root area. Angie says, “Work from the outer edge of where the foliage comes to the stem and apply the pellets in that area, just below the soil surface.”

Add mulch

Angie recommends using a naturally derived mulch, like Yates Dynamic Lifter 4 in 1 Mulch, instead of pebbles or black plastic: “The more organic matter you can add to soil, the better. This mulch creates a layer over the soil surface to protect it from the elements and reduce erosion and water loss.”

Top up the mulch any time your garden needs it; a couple of times a year is about right, says Angie. Scan

Organic matter is “like gold for soil”, says Angie. That's why it’s a key ingredient in all Yates Dynamic Lifter products READY, SET, GROW!

How does your garden grow?

The best place to plant them: The sunniest spot in your garden –tomatoes thrive in direct sunshine. Watch out for: Caterpillars, beetles, bugs and aphids all love the juicy taste of tomatoes. Monitor plants and use pest control as needed. When to feed them: Every six to eight weeks, while they are fruiting.

Feed them with: Yates Dynamic Lifter Plant Food Pellets Tomatoes, Vegies & Herbs. It’s packed with potassium to promote stronger, healthier plant growth. Extra phosphorus makes this ideal for root vegetables, too.

The best place to plant them:

An airy, well-ventilated spot in full sun with well-draining soil. Watch out for: Blackspot, a type of fungus that first appears on leaves. Good airflow will help reduce the risk of blackspot. When to feed them: Every six to eight weeks, while they are flowering. Some roses will go dormant over winter. Feed them with: Yates Dynamic Lifter Plant Food Pellets Roses & Flowers, which has potassium for robust growth and iron as a trace element for healthy leaves.

The best place to plant them: Somewhere warm and frost-free, with full sunlight for at least six hours per day. Watch out for: Pests like aphids, especially on young citrus trees. They’re particularly prevalent in warm weather. When to feed them: Citrus trees are constantly hungry and need to be fed every six to eight weeks, all year round. Feed them with: Yates Dynamic Lifter Plant Food Pellets Fruit & Citrus, which is rich in nitrogen for beautiful green, glossy leaves.

A FRESH START

Draw inspiration from the latest landscape design trends to create change in your garden

Photography Sue Stubbs

The wonderful world of gardening is ever-evolving, so we’ve compiled a list of the latest design trends to help you stay ahead. Captured at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, the largest landscape and garden show in the Southern Hemisphere, these innovations show you how to update your space and transform it into a modern haven. From rock features and planting schemes to hardscaping choices, there are plenty of great ideas here that can be adapted to suit any outdoor space.

STONE AGE

Introduce rocks or granite boulders to the landscape to achieve a wonderfully natural aesthetic. Not only do they have a grounding effect, they are durable, low maintenance and incredibly versatile. Use rocks to edge garden beds, as sculptural steps, to punctuate plantings or even to serve as outdoor setting pieces. Their organic shapes add dimension to any landscape – they are perfect for native gardens and rockeries, but can be used to equally lovely effect in more contemporary settings.

ABOVE AND RIGHT Natural materials such as paving stones, sculptural slabs, pebbles and terracotta are enjoying a resurgence

LEFT AND ABOVE

Create interest with unexpected material combinations. Timber, pavers, masonry walls with a white mortar-wash finish (known as German schmear, see left), gravel and boulders are all great foils for plants

MATERIAL WORLD

A diverse mix of materials makes a garden more dynamic and engaging. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures to edge beds, line paths or define zones. Bricks, timber and rocks in complementary tones can add interest to a space – consider cladding existing surfaces instead of a complete makeover. Arranging these materials more organically, rather than with harsh, over-structured lines, will give a more natural feel.

GO TO GROUND

Plant groundcovers to soften and add visual appeal to hard surfaces. Even the smallest patches of green growth among areas of decking and pavers can help to create a cohesive feeling throughout

SOFT EDGES

Dichondra and pratia provide some natural contrast between areas of horizontal brick paving

GEOMETRIC FORM

Buffalo grass planted among breeze blocks results in a cool pattern – and a stunning garden path

DYNAMIC INTERPLAY

IDEAL DESTINATION

An arbour or pergola creates a perfect sanctuary in the garden, and also acts as a focal point. The structure can be open, making it feel like part of the landscape, or covered with a climbing plant, such as ornamental grape vine or star jasmine, to give the space privacy and a sense of enclosure.

GREEN CARPET

A grassed area, large or small, encourages rest or play. Traditional lawn varieties – couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia – are ideal for areas where there’s regular foot traffic. For spaces that are seldom traversed, consider planting a non-grass carpet of dichondra, dymondia or native violet.

PLANT FOR IMPACT

Whether it’s big floral borders or a mixed bed of shrubs and perennials, plant choices should create drama and interest. Ensure there is variety between beds or, if space is limited, at least within each bed – for example, by weaving perennial sage through clipped buxus balls.

Integrating water into a garden has a cooling and calming effect, and can attract birds and other wildlife

MIX ’N’ MATCH

Monoculture – cultivating a single plant – is out and diversity is in. Include a mix of foliage and textures in your planting scheme to create an impact

TOUGH CHOICES

Low-maintenance sanguisorba, wormwood, dianella and dichondra help to soften a bare wall

PERFECT PAIRING

A mass planting of elkhorns and fine spikes of blue fescue provide a rich and intriguing display

DAFFODIL ‘BRIGHTON’

A classic daffodil with large, fragrant, golden-yellow blooms. The central cup or trumpet is fluted with flanged edges, surrounded by broad petals. This variety grows to 35cm with strong stems, each holding a single flower. Thrives in a sunny spot in areas with cool-to-cold winters, where it can be left in the ground to naturalise and multiply. Treat as an annual in warm areas.

DAFFODIL ‘WHITE LION’

This creamy white and lemon-yellow variety boasts double flowers with overlapping petals encasing a yellow centre. It grows to 40cm and prefers a spot in full sun with well-draining, humus-rich soil. Plant en masse or mix with other flowering bulbs for a striking spring display. Allow foliage to die down naturally, as this allows the plants to store energy and nutrients in the bulbs for next year’s blooms.

DAFFODIL ‘TETE BOUCLE’

The compact nature of these miniature daffodils with golden-yellow, fragrant double flowers makes them ideal for rockeries, pots or the front of borders. Position in a sunny area with well-draining soil enriched with aged manure or compost. Plant bulbs at a depth equal to three times their height, ensuring the pointed end faces upwards. Liquid feed regularly once leaves appear.

BUTTERFLY DAFFODIL

Also known as split-cup daffodils, these have trumpets that are split with ruffled edges. The colour of the cup often contrasts with the outer petals, making it an excellent cut flower. ‘Chanterelle’ has soft-lemon petals with a golden trumpet, while ‘Dolly Mollinger’ has white flowers with orange-yellow centres. Plant in full sun to part shade, ensuring the soil is well draining. ●

Wind worry

August is traditionally a breezy month and some pets may experience anxiety in wild or windy weather. Understanding your pet’s behaviour traits and body language can help manage anxiety, says head dog trainer Hayley Goodwin of Hanrob Pet Hotels (hanrob. com.au). “Breeds with a sensitive temperament may be more affected when their environment becomes unpredictable,” advises Hayley. “Mature dogs may experience hearing or sight degeneration, which could be affected by changes in air pressure. Working breeds might be distracted by the strong smells.”

Providing your pet with a safe space can help. Avoid rewarding fearful behaviour and provide opportunities to help build their confidence. If stress continues and they’re hypersensitive to noises or movement, consider consulting a behavioural specialist.

CLEANING CREW

If you have a fish tank, you’ll know it’s important to keep it clean. This can sometimes be tricky if you get a lot of algae, especially if your fish tank receives some sun. There is a solution and it will add colour and interest to your tank at the same time.

The bristlenose catfish is a great fish to have in your tropical aquarium. They suck onto surfaces with their mouths and work their way across, eating algae as they go. They’ll also happily munch away at the microflora on driftwood in the tank (which makes a great habitat for them as well).

It can be hard to tell males and females apart (the males have bristles higher up on their head), but buy several as babies and you’ll have a good chance of being able to breed them. Bristlenoses come in a range of colours and patterns, grow up to about 15cm, and get on with most other fish.

ADORABLE WEIRDOS

How often do we wish that dogs could explain themselves?

While our fluff balls are lovable, they occasionally do some decidedly odd things. We asked dog behaviour expert Nathan Williams (dogbehaviour specialist.com.au) to translate.

BOTTOM SNIFFING

Why do dogs sniff each other’s butts? “Just from scent alone, a dog can smell hormones and determine how another animal is feeling: anxious and afraid or calm and confident,” explains Nathan. ”But if they want clearer information, they will go to where scent is secreted at the highest level with the most amount of scent information, which is typically the rear end and genitals.”

GRASS MUNCHING

It’s normal for a dog to eat small amounts of grass every now and again, says Nathan. “But if they are eating grass regularly it might be to help balance the acidity in their gut, which can often be due to wheat or corn in their diet making acid levels in their stomach extremely high.”

Our cute canines can display some oddball behaviours – let’s make sense of their quirks 1 2 3

ZOOM ZOOMIES

Why do dogs get the ‘zoomies’ after a bath (and then find something gross to roll in)? “Zoomies are normally related to anxiety – a build-up of cortisol (stress hormone) in the system. This stress is directly related to a change to perceived normality,” says Nathan. “So if ‘free rein’ is your dog’s normality, and then you contain him while you wash and dry him, this creates stress. Once released, your dog makes a desperate

attempt to get that freedom back. Dogs who are consistently calm don’t get the zoomies.”

MOONWALKING

Ever noticed a dog kicking up grass and dirt with their back feet after going to the toilet? “Dogs lay scent in numerous ways, the most common of which is through urinating. However, dogs perspire through their feet, which also releases scent. So scraping their feet on the ground after peeing has two parts: one is a postural physical display typically from a controlling and/or hormonal dog, and the other is laying scent on the ground from their feet,” says Nathan.

BUM SHUFFLING

Why do dogs drag their butt across the ground? “This behaviour is related to discomfort or an itch in the rectum,” explains Nathan. “Dogs have a gland in the anus that can get inflamed and irritated.” If your dog does this often, Nathan advises seeing a vet who can express the gland to give your dog relief. Itchy or irritated skin can also be caused by intestinal parasites, dog soaps and even certain foods, so it’s wise to visit the vet. ●

ONE WALL, THAT’S ALL!

Turn a blank space into an action station with hardware hacks to create order and utility

Many a dream has been dashed by the ‘no space’ argument. But it’s time to take a closer look around your home. Size up an under-used garage, a wide passageway or even a spare room – you only need a single wall to devise a zone dedicated to a favourite pursuit. Whether you’re improving your fitness, nurturing plants or indulging your passion for craft and DIY, the steps are the same: clear the clutter, measure up to find the storage solution for you, and make that space yours.

FIT FOR PURPOSE

Who needs an expensive gym membership when there’s a wellequipped exercise area at home? It’s amazing how much fitness gear you can store vertically on a pegboard and versatile shelves. Sturdy storage systems designed for garage use are ideal for hefty items like hand weights – the large shelf in our set-up has a 60kg capacity, while the wall-mounted baskets can hold up to 15kg each.

DIY DELIGHT

If you love home-improvement projects, then this is the wall for you. Having all your tools and DIY equipment off the floor and clearly displayed not only saves time (and frustration), but is also safer. To reduce tripping hazards and the risk of cuts from scrabbling around in a box for that hacksaw you need, hang your kit on storage solutions specifically designed for workshop areas.

UPS AND DOWNS

Turn a timber panel into a practical, space-saving folding workbench

Project Joseph Visser

1 PREP THE TIMBER

Use a tape measure and pencil to measure and mark timber and a circular saw to cut a 1300mm x 400mm x 26mm panel, or have it cut in store. Using an orbital sander, sand all faces of the panel with abrasive paper – start with 180-grit, then do another pass using 240-grit paper. Use 240-grit paper and a sanding block to smooth all edges of the panel, then wipe away dust.

2 STAIN THE PANEL

Apply a coat of stain and varnish to all faces of the panel using a paintbrush or mini roller, leaving to dry and lightly sanding with 320-grit paper. Wipe away dust, then apply a second coat and leave to dry.

3

ATTACH THE HINGES

Spring into action

Press the catches to lower against the wall

Keep in mind…

■ Work in a well-ventilated area and wear the recommended safety gear when sanding and staining timber and using power tools.

■ Brackets should only be attached to wall studs if attaching to plasterboard walls, or to brickwork/masonry (not mortar or grouting).

■ Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional.

■ The workbench is designed to hold up to 45kg, but do not climb, stand or sit on it.

■ Keep all stain and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

On the underside of the panel, measure and mark 200mm in from both ends. Position the brackets on the marked locations and check for square. Mark the screw holes and predrill with a 3mm bit, making sure not to drill all the way through the timber. Attach the brackets using 20mm timber screws.

4 WALL-MOUNT THE BENCH

Using a tape measure, square and spirit level, mark a horizontal line on the wall at a comfortable height for your bench (900-1000mm is standard). Mark hinge locations on the wall. Attach the bench with fixings suitable for your wall type, and rated to take the weight of the bench plus tools and equipment. ●

TOP TOOLS FOR DIY

Make sure Dad has the right gear to get the job done

Not all fathers are created equal when it comes to home improvement and maintenance – each person’s experience is unique and depends on the projects they undertake. Having the appropriate tools for the task is crucial to success, whether Dad wants to be able to hang pictures straight or tackle more ambitious home updates. Check out this round-up of the kit you need whether you are a newbie or an old hand at home reno.

STARTING OUT

Creating a strong foundation of necessary tools is essential when venturing into the world of do-ityourself projects for the first time. Start with the essentials: a sturdy hammer, a screwdriver set, an adjustable wrench, a tape measure and a utility knife. Alternatively, a convenient all-inone hand-tool kit, designed for repairs and odd jobs, simplifies the selection process. These bits of equipment set the stage for DIY, but before long you’ll find yourself wanting to work faster and with less effort, which is where power tools come in. Whether wall-mounting shelves, assembling or upcycling furniture or performing repairs such as deck maintenance, a jigsaw, detail sander and a drill/ driver is the tool trio to have. Begin

TASK MASTER

Boasting hundreds of uses, the Dremel 4250 3/50 is the number one toolkit every home needs. We took one for a spin and found out just how versatile it is

It sounds too good to be true: a single tool that can be used to cut timber, polish cutlery, engrave fine jewellery and even trim your dog’s claws. But that’s the beauty of the Dremel 4250, a handheld rotary power tool that makes more household, DIY and hobby tasks possible, across a huge variety of different materials.

The most powerful tool in the Dremel shed, the 4250 has a 175W motor and a revolutions per minute (RPM) range from 5.000 to 35.000, plus it’s compatible with all Dremel rotary-tool accessories. This versatility makes it ideal for more seasoned DIYers while still being simple enough for beginners to master.

The Dremel 4250 3-50 Kit is a great place to start. It comes with 50 different accessories and three attachments, including the Line & Circle Cutter, Comfort Guard and the popular Flexshaft for finer work and hard-to-reach places. Here are just some of the ways you can use it.

1 REMOVE RUST

Tools seen better days? Attach the 413 Sanding Disc and give them a spruce up. The fine grit easily removes rust from steel and other metals. For heavier corrosion, use the 442-02 Carbon Steel Brush for a clean.

2

BUFF AND POLISH

Bring back the gleam on cabinet pulls and window hardware with the 414 Felt Polishing Wheel. Add a dab of the 421 Polishing Compound to smooth out any imperfections. Both can be found in the Dremel 110 Piece Multipurpose Mega Accessory Kit

3

RESTORE FURNITURE

Breathe new life into old furniture with the 511E EZ Lock Finishing Abrasive Buff. This sanding buff removes old paint and tarnish and gives a light sanding to wood, metal, glass and plastics. It's in the Dremel EZ Lock 70 Piece Multipurpose Mega Accessory Kit

4

PRUNE TREES

Capable of slicing through wood and plastic, the EZ544 EZ Lock Cutting Wheel is handy for pruning small branches in the garden. It’s also part of the EZ Lock accessory kit.

Expert tip Hold the drill at 90° for perfectly straight holes, and wrap painter’s tape around the bit as a depth gauge

1 Use a circular saw to cut a 12mm plywood sheet in half lengthways. Apply adhesive over the face, join the pieces with edges flush and clamp to dry. Use a combination square to mark lengthways 250mm from the edge, then cut. Follow the cutting list (see opposite) to cut panels from A to G, marking and cutting one at a time. Sand the cut edges using 180-grit abrasive paper. Tip: Position the blade on the offcut side of each mark to allow for the kerf (thickness of the blade).

SIDE TABLE

Build a designer-look piece from two layers of DIY-friendly plywood. The key is to measure accurately to make straight cuts, checking adjacent pieces are exactly the same width. You’ll also need a good woodworking adhesive, dowel connectors and centre points.

Pick it up! Use these cabinetmaker’s companions for accurate joins

● Ryobi 8mm dowel centre points, $4.99/pack of 4, I/N: 0466319. Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.

2 Position panel D facedown to mark a centreline along the woodgrain. On the top and base edges of F, mark 30mm in from both ends to drill holes with an 8mm bit. Insert dowel centre points in the top holes and position on D, edges flush. Tap with a mallet, remove F and dowel centre points and drill into the indents. Apply adhesive in the holes and along the joins. Insert dowels, reposition the panels and clamp to dry. Tip: Make all the holes 16mm deep.

STEP 1: MEASURE AND CUT PANELS
STEP 2: JOIN PANELS D AND F

“I think blokes find it quite difficult to share feelings, I do myself. It’s a lot easier if you give them something to do at the same time.”

Geoff retired from his rewarding career as a primary school principal last year. Now his favourite slot in his weekly routine is a casual boxing group that he runs for his mates.

On Wednesday nights they do a bit of pad work, have a bit of a laugh and at the end they sit around and talk.

“It’s important to construct something that gives you connection. It’s nice to give my mates a regular opportunity to share what’s going on for them.”

For some, retirement can be challenging, bringing financial stress, social isolation, or the loss of identity and routine. Having the support of friends and family can help people better manage this transition. Get tips on how to ask at ruok.org.au
