Welcome
A word from our editor Welcome to the very first issue of Bunnings magazine. Of all the many things I’ve enjoyed about working on this edition, uncovering the stores’ treasures has been a highlight. A few finds are pictured here, but you’ll discover plenty of
other beautiful and useful pieces within these pages; our striking Marrakech-inspired shoot (page 16) brings pattern and colour to outdoor areas, while our guide to timber flooring (page 49) gives the lowdown on this timeless base. I haven’t entirely missed out on the practical gene, but I’m no DIY queen. Yet I find there are few things more satisfying than tackling simple household jobs or updating something destined for the tip. Advances in paint technology mean you can give almost anything a new look – just check out our revamped console on page 76. If you need someone to do it for you, Bunnings offers all sorts of tradie services. Visit the Special Orders Desk for more information. Enjoy the issue!

Rock the kasbah Let the colour, texture and style of Morocco inspire you to create a garden oasis that is full of lush and luxurious treasures
S
o evocative you can almost smell the spices and hear the distant sounds of the souk, modern Moroccan style blends the exotic with the bold to fashion a distinctive and characterful look. This much-loved trend is born of a mishmash of influences from all over Europe, Africa and the Middle East, which results in a vibe that is both multilayered and unique. Vibrant pattern and a saturated colour palette of rich terracotta, gold and burnished brass, punctuated by flashes of teal, evoke desert and sea, while layers of textiles create a sense of laidback luxury. Take inspiration from the following pages to bring the magic of Morocco home. }

Scrub up well Upgrade your laundry into the ultimate chore space with these essential features
W
ith the careful selection of key ingredients, your new laundry might even become – don’t laugh – your favourite room in the house!
What’s in store
Generous well-organised storage is a must for a laundry you’ll want to spend time in. Everhard’s Nugleam drawer system laundry unit (above) has been cleverly designed to maximise storage, with a bottom drawer large enough for bulky containers, plus finger-pull functionality for a minimalist, modern look. The unit can be used either alongside custom cabinetry or as a standalone piece for a retrofit solution.
more space to spread out on either side. Everhard’s Nugleam utility sinks come in three sizes – 35L, 45L and 70L – so you’re bound to find one to suit your space. Regardless of size, your sink should be robust; the Nugleam sink comes in tough stainless steel, with a 25mm internal corner radius to make it easier to keep clean.
On the flat
Clear bench space for folding, sorting and odd jobs is an essential feature of a stellar laundry. The Nugleam range of units and utility sinks is designed to pair with custom cabinetry, so you can match the system with all the bench space you desire.

Tough stuff
A laundry that’s easy on the eye is going to be a lot more pleasant to spend time in, but it needs to be more than just a pretty face. For a functional laundry that will last the distance, look for hardwearing materials that look good, but can also take a beating, from rough handling and wet conditions. As the centrepiece of the laundry, the Nugleam drawer system – in super-strong, heavy-duty galvanised steel – is tough enough to meet mess head on, while delivering a stylish white powder-coated facade to complement any contemporary laundry scheme beautifully. u 1 Nugleam Drawer System Laundry Unit*
Dirty work
One of the key ingredients of a good laundry is a tough sink to tackle the hard demands of family life. To choose the right one, consider your household’s needs. A large sink is a must if you want something big enough to soak a load of sheets, but if your needs are more modest, a kitchen-sized version will do, leaving

Before
A clean start This laundry’s small footprint has been cleverly planned to fit in all the essentials
O
ften overlooked, the average laundry plays an understudy role to the spotlight-stealing kitchen, but a clever wash space can be life changing – or at least chore changing. The original room here was a corridorstyle zone with all the action focused at one end, and with no direct access to the outdoors and the clothesline. The room was relocated as part of a whole-home renovation, and although the dimensions stayed similar – just 1.5 metres wide – the smart new floor plan has solved all the problems of the old, with more storage and outdoor access.
Floor plan
Using the length of the room rather than the width has delivered much-needed bench space.
Luxe for less
A laundry rarely earns the right to expensive finishes, but it can still look good. Matt white ceramic wall tiles, paired with Dunlop grout in Charred Ash, tap into the current trend for retro-chic square tiles, while dark grey floor tiles provide a quiet backdrop, allowing other finishes to shine.
A dash of bling
Copper tones give warmth to the room’s simple palette. The brushed copper knobs by Prestige break up the white cabinetry, while the statement Decorium inset sink in copper is a stunning centrepiece that promises to take out (some of) the pain of household chores.

Top tips
5 tips for small laundries
Door with more The old laundry had no direct access to the outdoors, but the door here also plays a role as the sole window in the space, allowing ample natural light to filter through.
1. Choose spaceefficient appliances This might mean choosing a washer/dryer over two separate appliances, as seen here, or simply looking at the internal capacity. Manufacturers are working to increase machine capacity without changing the external size, so you can get more bang – and wash fewer loads – for your buck. 2. Build in some bench space Choosing a front-loading washer allows the countertop to extend right over the top of the appliance, providing extra bench space for folding and sorting. 3. Mix up the storage Maximising cupboard space is a given, but also explore other storage options. Open shelving keeps frequently used items accessible while visually expanding the space, while hooks turn unused vertical planes into extra storage. 4. Downsize the sink Laundry tubs are traditionally huge and are designed for soaking big loads of laundry, but realistically, a smaller kitchen-size sink is more than adequate for most laundries, saving a tonne of space for other functions.
Storage plus
The old laundry lacked storage, so it was a top priority for the new room. The space between the laundry and a bedroom allowed for a broom and linen closet; the opposite wall now plays host to a mix of overhead and under-bench cabinets, open shelves and cute timber hooks.
Basic black
The aesthetic desired for the space demanded some edgier accessories, courtesy of the taps and hardware in a matt black finish, which ties in with the dark grout and black door frame. For a similar look try Abey’s gooseneck mixer, Caroma ‘Liano Nexus’ towel ring and Lane Security ‘Oxford’ door lever set. u
5. Keep it bright and open Working with a smaller space is all about the art of illusion. Bring in as much natural light as possible through windows and doors, and decorate with whites and lighter colours, which can help to create a feeling of space, as well as allowing accent pieces to pop.

n open-plan layout has become the defining feature of a modern kitchen, but it has its drawbacks. With no walls, there’s nowhere to hide cooking mess – and the clatter of dishes and rumble of the dishwasher can intrude on quiet time in the living zone. The ‘broken-plan’ kitchen concept goes a long way to solving these issues, using smart design and a variety of screening and zoning devices to partially disconnect the kitchen from the living area. “While thinking of your space holistically, you can create zones for different functions,” says interior designer Beth Bieske of The Navy Edit (thenavyedit.com). “You want to keep the great things about open-plan living, like openness and light, but the zones allow for more privacy when needed.”

Before you start ripping down walls, there are some smart architectural solutions that can deliver both separation and connection. The butler’s pantry essentially splits the kitchen into two spaces: public and private. “Butler’s pantries create the opportunity to hide preparation and cleaning zones so the main kitchen can remain as a showpiece, even in times of active use,” explains Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle.
“Rather than completely remove doorways, create wider openings that permit connection between spaces while still allowing for privacy when needed” – Beth Bieske, interior designer

Design trickery
In this Kaboodle kitchen, the butler’s pantry has lots of storage and an extra sink, keeping the main space clear
Keeping handles to a minimum prevents the kitchen from looking too functional, disguising it in plain sight
Internal glazed doors between areas (left) allow you open up a space or close it off without losing the light. This is also helpful if you want to heat or cool separate rooms
Using visual trickery is another way to separate the kitchen from adjacent spaces. Setting the kitchen area under a bulkhead can be effective, with the lowered ceiling setting the space apart. A similar result can be achieved at ground level with a change of levels. “Several steps between a kitchen and dining space can act not only as a physical change but also as a mental change between cooking and dining,” says Beth Bieske.
Disappearing act
Screening can be effective at hiding work areas. See-through dividers – for example, vertical timber slats or open shelving – can help break up the line of sight while still letting in light. } bunnings

Plan it Half walls are good for allowing conversation to flow between spaces while hiding clutter from those at seat height. For a well-ordered kitchen, an upstand – a 10-20cm divider across part of the island bench – may be all that’s required to block a loaded sink from view while creating a divide between work zone and social space.
Go with the flow
Appliances can be the visual and acoustic enemy of free-flowing design. A butler’s pantry can come into its own here, potentially containing the dishwasher and any noisy small appliances. “An appliance cabinet to hide your toaster, kettle or other everyday appliances will help make everything look not only neat and tidy, but streamlined,” adds interior architect Sally Rhys-Jones. Choosing integrated models – where appliances have the
same fronts as the cabinetry – for the dishwasher and rangehood will render them virtually invisible. Disguise the sink by selecting an undermounted version and considering the colour. “A white or black sink may blend in better with your benchtop material,” says Beth Bieske. Simple tap lines are the best pick for maximum discretion. With appliances you can’t tuck away, you have two main choices. Either lessen the visual impact with a ceramic or induction cooktop paired with a built-in oven, reducing their presence to two sleek squares, or you can take the opposite route and make your cooker a focal point, suggests Sanja Kandic, marketing executive at Omega Blanco. “You want to make sure you can engage in the conversation while cooking or preparing the food,” she says. A handsome, freestanding piece can be a scene setter.
Easy on the eyes
Typically, there’s a visual disconnect between kitchen and living space in an open zone, with the former all slick, hygienic surfaces and the other a nest of warmth and soft textures. The trend here is to ‘hide’ the kitchen in plain sight, using the same cabinetry fronts in the dining and living zones for a seamless flow. Choosing a softer and more tactile surface for the cabinetry is very effective – think texture and matt over gloss. Minimise the number of knobs and pulls in the kitchen, using discreet grip handles or push catches instead. “There’s nothing worse than seeing a sea of
handles in the kitchen – it can look really busy and draw the eye to the kitchen,” warns Sally Rhys-Jones. Even that kitchen essential, the island bench, can be disguised by giving it the appearance of a piece of furniture. Echo materials in the rest of the room and consider adding a chef’s table. “Creating a dining table as an extension of the island, positioned at a lower level and using a different surface, will help maintain an open space while creating defined zones for different uses,” says Lisa Mayski. “This will also help to create visual layers in the space.” u
Steps Stairs between zones are an effective way to divide a space for more privacy
Kitchen tips
“If the plan allows, a window splashback is perfect, as it lets in lots of natural light that can sometimes be lost in broken-plan kitchens,” says Beth Bieske.
Great storage – and plenty of it – is an important factor in keeping the main kitchen surfaces clear and freeing up the space to function as an informal entertaining zone.

What’s involved?
Where a DA is required, in addition to your site and architectural plans, there are a number of reports that need to be included in your application, depending on the size and scope of your project. These may include a recent survey of your site, a dilapidation report, a statement of environmental effects, a heritage report, a bushfire or flooding report, a storm water/drainage report and, in some states, an Electricity Act declaration form. An accredited professional needs to supply these forms and each will cost from $1000 to $5000, or more. On top of these costs, there will also be a fee for submitting a DA to council. This fee will depend on the size of your building job and will vary from council to council, but you’ll be looking at about $1000 for a job that’s under $50,000.
What happens next?
Your dream reno is on the cusp of reality, but first it needs the big tick from the powers that be. Read on for the info you need to push through the paperwork
T
he plans are done, the money is in the bank and you’re planning the finger food for the first party in your newly renovated home. Wait up! Before you go further, you’ll need to apply for Development Approval (DA) from your local council, a formal document that shows the merits of your plan and how it adheres to local and state rules.
To DA or not to DA?
Each council has slightly different requirements, so you’ll need to check in
with your local planning department to see exactly what information they need for your situation. Many councils can provide a checklist for you so you don’t leave anything out. In some circumstances, your project may qualify for a less arduous process; a complying development means the development automatically ticks the right boxes, while for smaller jobs, such as a bathroom or kitchen renovation, exempt development may apply. For this, no paperwork is required to be submitted. Your local council will be able to advise you.
Submitting a DA can be a confusing process and you might want to enlist the help of a professional to guide you through the process bunnings.com.au

A helping hand
If you’re using a building designer or architect, they should be able to advise you, or an experienced builder will also be able to assist in getting your plans through council. Meeting in person with the relevant council employee prior to submitting your DA can also be helpful as, while they won’t be able to give you a determination, they will be able to give you an idea of what might not gain approval, so you can make changes before you submit. In short, being well organised and patient is key to preparing for your DA. It’ll all be a distant memory once you’re enjoying that house-warming. u

DA 101
Once a DA application is submitted to council, it will be advertised to the community, who are allowed to lodge objections, and then evaluated by the council’s planning department. It’s hard to put an exact time frame on a DA, so don’t book the builders too quickly. It will depend on the complexity of the project, but all councils do have a maximum number of days in which they are required to respond to a DA. In NSW, for example, the goal is for 90 per cent of residential DAs to be determined within 40 days, while in Victoria, it’s 60 days.

DOWN OR UP?
In-ground beds are better for larger shrubs and trees, as the depth of a raised bed may not let roots spread. A raised bed is great for a border, especially if you want to get a head start on screening out next door. “Raised beds can be installed on most outdoor surfaces, whether grass or concrete,” says Angie. Plus, if your soil is hard to work with, you can fill the bed with quality bagged garden soil and soil improvers, while you work at a height kinder to knees and back. For the bed itself, kits are an easy option. Metal-framed models such as those from Birdies and The Organic Garden Co come in a range of sizes.

BED BASICS
Not all earth is created equal, but it can be improved. Before planting, fork in a mix of a general plant fertiliser, organic compost and well-rotted manure and incorporate well. For clay soils, apply a gypsum product to help improve drainage. Soil health is important, so ensure you look after it and apply products at least twice a year. Edging will help stop grass wandering through the beds. “Bricks are classic, while timber stakes keep things natural,” says Angie. For a more modern look, slimline edging such as Tuff Edge aluminium is virtually invisible when installed.
6
PLANT UP
Defining your garden bed with clever plantings will help to give it structure. Look to create layers and depth with a mix of height and forms, adding interest and texture with different leaf and flower shapes. “For a formal look, choose shrubs that can be trimmed into neat and straight levels, like English box or westringia,” suggests Angie. “For a relaxed feel, select plants with varying foliage colours and flowers, like grevilleas, lavender and loropetalum.” When planting, watering in with a tonic such as Seasol can help get plants off to a flying start. u

The green scene
Evocative of nature, new growth and rejuvenation, decorating with rich green is a bloomin’ beautiful way to bring a little of the outdoors in
R
ested, rejuvenated, revived. We love how green, with its roots in nature, makes us feel, and it seems the design community is on board – in 2019, rich greens sit strongly on the palettes of Dulux, Taubmans and British Paints. The good news for homeowners is that this lush hue is easy to embrace. Here’s how to make it your own.

Why we love it
Known for its calming effect, green reminds us of the natural world, from the mossy hues of a woodland glade to the dusty tones of eucalyptus. It connects with society’s growing need to step out of the fast lane, achieve balance and literally smell the roses. This need to commune with nature directly influences a key palette in Dulux’s Repair collection. Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says, “Repair’s colours are drawn from nature and plug into our desire to slow down and reconnect with the natural world.” For a strong hue, green is surprisingly versatile, marrying happily with almost any interior theme. “It lends itself to all design styles and rooms, from Hollywood glamour, paired with gold, marble, velvet and other luxurious textures, to the other extreme, a relaxed, eclectic tribal/boho style,” says Taubmans colour consultant Grace Garrett.

Entry level
Deep greens can create a cocooning effect, drawing in the walls and creating a sense of intimacy, making it ideal for dining rooms, sitting rooms and bathrooms. Softer, grey-based greens often better serve quiet spaces such as bedrooms. The degree of light is a major factor; you can go wild in a sunlit space, but deep wall colours in darker rooms can become caverns. If unsure, interior designer Victoria Waters (victoriawatersdesign.com.au) suggests you paint a swatch on your wall. “View it in day and night light to ensure the colour creates the perfect setting for your room,” she says. Another good tip is to use a rich colour in smaller proportions, such as a feature wall, or paint half the wall horizontally, perhaps below a dado rail.
Rich greens are a wonderful fit for entryways, which are a great place to make a strong statement. As it’s a smaller space, you can express your creativity without committing to the bigger area of a living room or bedroom. Use of a dark hue also makes flow-on spaces feel larger, lighter and brighter.
All white on the night
Crisp white is a classic match for darker hues, but paired with your new green, the most neutral of whites can play tricks on the eyes. It’s all about undertones, which are present in all but primary colours and can come to the fore when teamed with certain shades. “To avoid austerity, bold lush and soft grey-greens love a warmer white such as Dulux China White, Antique White USA and Natural White,” says Andrea. Brighter whites suit a fresh or deep green and make the colour pop. Slap big green and white swatches on the wall and note how they look in artificial light, which can throw a lot of yellow or, in the case of fluorescent lights, blue.

Mix and match
Taking cues from nature is always a good decorating rule of thumb. Create a woodland palette with stone hues, whites, browns and tans, rust and lighter shades of sage. “This palette loves texture, so complete the look with warm timber tones, and layer natural fibres such as linen
and buttery leathers in furniture and accessories,” says Andrea. Surprise and delight with contrasting hues. Interior designer Victoria Waters says: “Mustard, blush pink and white are beautiful with shades of green. Bolder emerald greens work well with accents of black.” u

ack when we were students, a batik bedspread might have sufficed as a window covering, but now we’re all grown up, the right curtains, blinds and shutters are the mark of a complete and considered interior scheme, offering privacy, environmental protection and potentially loads of aesthetic appeal. “Window furnishings complete the interior design and appearance of the room,” says Marcus Alexander of Windoware. New window dressings are a relatively simple and cost-effective way to make a big change in your home. Each option brings practical benefits and style, with the potential to transform your interiors.
Curtain call
Curtains can provide a variety of functions, from heavy blockout shades to sheers that provide privacy without inhibiting airflow or light. rods and curtains,” says Marcus. “Modern interior designs tend to have a simpler view, using hidden tracks and lighter fabrics for a more seamless appearance.” Clever curtain hanging can visually expand small windows and give height to low ceilings. Go high to draw the eye upwards, and wide so the open curtains don’t obscure the window. Also consider the length: do you want curtains puddling on the floor, or at sill height so they’re out of the way of small hands and playful pets? Generally, curtains should have some fullness to them when drawn, and not be stretched tightly across the window. Steer clear of curtains anywhere near a cooktop in the kitchen, where fabric blowing in the breeze could be a fire hazard.

Find the right rod A decorative rod can give your curtains a hearty visual boost. They could be simple poles with fabric hung on rings or threaded with eyelet or tab curtains, or double rods that let you hang sheers and blockout or thermal curtains together. When you measure for your curtain rod or track, extend beyond the window frame so curtains don’t obscure the glazing and block natural light. A general guide is around 10-15cm beyond the frame. Curtains can be heavy, so make sure the track is attached securely. Curtain rod brackets can be attached directly to the top of a timber frame with the rod placed on them, secured with a set screw. To hang a rod above the window, or if there is no timber frame, brackets can be attached to the wall. Drill in wall anchors, then screw the brackets into those. Shop for chic curtain rods

feel, and are a great option in rooms where full curtains may not be practical, such as a kitchen, laundry or bathroom. Of the four main types, Venetians are made up of narrow horizontal slats and come in different materials such as metal, and natural or painted timber for a contemporary look. Roman styles are comprised of fabric panels that fold up for a softer look – great for bedrooms and living rooms – and are available in different fabric grades, from transparent to blockout. Roller blinds also come in a range of fabrics, and can disappear almost completely into a pelmet above the window to give maximum window visibility. Vertical blinds – a series of hanging panels – can be custom made, and work particularly well with large windows and sliding doors, as they can stack at one end. bunnings.com.au

Blinds can be installed either within the window opening or on the wall just above. Fixing it to the wall allows for a little more flexibility, as you won’t need to get a blind that fits the window exactly. Cleats are essential for winding up excess cord, making them safer for children and pets; there are also a number of cordless blind options available. Some types of blinds can be trimmed to size yourself, while certain models by Riva can be ordered in custom sizes; ask at the Special Orders Desk for details.
Shutter speed
Their breezy, beach-casual vibe has made plantation shutters a perennial favourite and an ideal match for the ever-popular Hamptons interior style. Shutters are perfect for not only letting in light, they
can also enhance it, as sunlight bounces off the blades. They are easy to wipe clean, and are simply opened and closed with a touch of the hand. In the past, the cost of custom-fitted shutters was somewhat prohibitive, but those designed for DIY installation, such as the Easy As range, make it possible to get the look for a much more reasonable price today. “You simply assemble the frame, insert it into the window opening, then adjust using an Allen key. Your measurements don’t need to be perfect, as we’ve built in room for adjustment,” says Martin Wilson of Easy As. “I’m the world’s most unpractical person and I can do it.” The shutters come in 25 standard sizes that work for approximately 80 per cent of Australian windows, and can also be ordered in custom sizes. u

ome days it’s not easy to get inspired about dinner, and a kitchen with cabinets that are more shabby than chic doesn’t help. The good news is, if your kitchen is timber or laminate, you don’t need to do a complete reno to give it new life. It’s amazing what some paint, new handles and a little trim can do.

1. Identify the cabinet
First, establish what finish is currently on your cupboards: are they stained or painted timber, laminate or maybe 2pac? No matter the answer, there’s a smart solution with varying degrees of difficulty. Timber doors can be stripped or sanded before being painted or stained, while laminate doors can be given a coat of paint that’s fit for purpose. Don’t forget, you’ll also need to do the frames, end panels and the like. As a professional finish, 2pac needs specialist handling (see box, opposite, below).

Changing outdated cabinet pulls and knobs has the same effect on a kitchen as a statement necklace over a basic black dress. Solid timber
For purists, it’s hard to beat the longevity of a solid hardwood floor. “Australian hardwood species offer a range of colour options from light browns to deep reds, and a solid timber floor has a wear layer that can be refinished many times over, providing a lifetime of enjoyment,” says Boral national accounts manager Justin Scobie. If you’re after structural flooring, 19mm solid strip boards can be installed directly over timber joists or particleboard sheeting, whereas 13-14mm-thick overlay boards are suitable over a level subfloor such as concrete. For best results, enlist a professional contractor to install, sand and finish a new hardwood timber floor. Popular choices include spotted gum and blackbutt, which lend themselves to both modern and classic interior palettes. “They also have a higher Janka rating [a measure of hardness] and density, creating a more durable flooring surface,” explains Justin. Solid timber does not respond well to extended sun exposure and dampness, so don’t use it in wet areas or over a heated slab that may cause the timber to dry out.

Update it Vinyls Timber-effect self-adhesive vinyl planks have come a long way over the years. Not only are they less prone to damage than their 20th-century predecessors, they come in a wide range of colours and are relatively straightforward to install yourself. They are water resistant, so can be used anywhere indoors that you might expect splashes, such as a powder room. However, they are not suitable for shower areas – or for outdoor use where high temperatures can fade and damage the vinyl. If you do install the vinyl planks yourself, it’s important to keep in mind the condition of the subfloor, which must be smooth. Look over it for anything that might disturb the vinyl, and if there are any gaps fill them with silicone. }

Timber laminate
Engineered timber
Available in a broad spectrum of robust veneers that resemble solid wood, engineered boards have surged in popularity. Boral’s range includes options that highlight the colours and patterns of Australian hardwoods, while its ‘Metallon’ collection features finishes inspired by the aesthetics of metals such as copper, pewter and titanium. 1
2
“An advantage is that it’s pre-finished and doesn’t need to be acclimatised or installed by a specialist,” says Boral’s Justin Scobie. “If you choose an engineered board with a nominal 4mm top layer, it can also be re-sanded.” To guard your floors from scuffs, add protective pads to furniture and move rugs around often to prevent darker and lighter patches forming. 3
Engineered timber gives a great look at a lower cost 1 Tarkett 14mm 2.51sqm engineered timber flooring in Brushed Oak, $265, I/N: 6690347. 2 Boral 186mm 1.463sqm engineered timber flooring in Spotted Gum, from $317, I/N: 0018389. 3 Tarkett 14mm 2.51sqm engineered timber flooring in Oak Brown Brush, $265, I/N: 6690349.
Made from a high-density fibreboard core with a digitally printed top layer, hard-wearing, fade-resistant laminate can look surprisingly realistic. “Because the ‘Supergloss’ range is produced by scanning real timbers, it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between it and the real thing,” says Formica category marketing manager Aymeric de Rosbo. Although not suitable for outdoor areas, bathrooms or laundries, a big plus is laminate’s ease of maintenance, says Tarkett distributor sales director David Huxley, who recommends a regular vacuum and gentle wipe with a microfibre mop. Don’t use a wet or steam mop. “A good tip is to place doormats and rugs at entrances to absorb dirt before it’s tracked through the house,” he adds. u 1

Update it Grow you r own herbs
E Must-have herbs Turn every meal into a gourmet affair with herbs from your own pot or patch. It’s easy to get started and gives endless rewards in both kitchen and garden
ven if you plant nothing else, it’s a good idea to flex your green thumb and cultivate a few herbs. These culinary heavyweights can transform a dull dinner, plus you’ll save lots of money on store-bought varieties. The key to success is to plant herbs you know you’ll use – it’s good for your pantry and also for the plants themselves, as most thrive if picked regularly. Growing herbs from seeds is cheap and satisfying, but many varieties take a while to germinate, which makes seedlings a more attractive option. If growing them on in pots, use a quality potting mix with good drainage, and supplement the soil with a suitable liquid fertiliser once a fortnight. Water regularly to nurture your herbs – dry soil can cause them to go to seed (coriander is a major offender). However, don’t drench them, as most don’t appreciate wet feet. Then simply snip, rinse, tear or chop, and enjoy! u
Cooking class: Choose herbs to suit your culinary creations
Basil: Wonderfully versatile, basil should be planted in a spot that receives full sun. Pick as needed (such as for yummy pesto) and be prepared to replant every year as in most areas it’ll die off in winter. Parsley: Plant parsley once and you’ll have it forever, as it’s a renowned self-seeder. Flat-leaf parsley has a stronger flavour than curly, but both are easy to grow. Oregano: Oregano can be used fresh – pick as needed – but leaves left to dry will develop a stronger flavour. Cut stems just before the plant flowers, hang to dry and store in an airtight container. Chilli: If you like hot chillies, make sure there’s not too much nitrogen in the soil, as this can slow production of capsaicin, which gives them their heat. Scrape out the seeds for a less fiery taste.

French
Tarragon: A herbaceous
perennial, tarragon dies back to the level of the soil in winter, so plant in a pot or note the plant’s position in the garden bed so you know where it is when it returns in spring. Chives: A delicious addition to salads, chives also attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. A ‘tea’ of chopped chives can be sprayed onto plants susceptible to powdery mildew. Rosemary: Vigorous rosemary grows well in hot, dry climates, and with its delicate flowers, it’s a pretty and delicious addition to the garden. Thyme: This fragrant Mediterranean gem thrives on neglect. Put in a hot spot with well-drained soil and don’t overwater it – it’s drought tolerant so once established it really only needs water when the soil is totally dry.
Asian
Coriander: This
love-or-hate herb is often dismissed as hard to grow, as it has a habit of bolting. The key is to monitor its conditions; place in a sunny but not scorching spot (winter is often better for coriander) and don’t let it dry out, which will make it quickly run to seed. Lemongrass: Robust lemongrass loves heat and dry conditions. In colder climates, grow in a pot and move inside or to a sunny, sheltered spot in frosty months. Growing it in a pot or tub also combats its invasive tendencies. Thai basil: Unlike sweet basil (the kind you make pesto with), Thai basil has a distinct aniseed flavour that’s delicious in Thai and Vietnamese cooking. It’s also an aesthetic asset for the garden, with pretty purple blooms that bees love.

Fix it
Types of drills
Drill driver: This is your basic general-purpose drill; its primary functions are to drill holes and drive screws. Some will have a hammer setting, but it’s a secondary function. Hammer drill: A more powerful drill, this one is designed to drill into hard surfaces such as concrete or masonry, which it does with a pounding action, like a hammer. The hammer function is its primary purpose, but it will still do all those drill-driver jobs. Impact driver: Tradies often call these ‘rattle guns’. They use a hammer drill-like motion to drive in screws seriously fast, even large construction screws, and make a rattling noise as the impact function kicks in. It’s important that any driver bits you use with these are impact rated. This is not a great tool to use for delicate surfaces, as the impact function can damage them if it kicks in at the wrong time. Rotary hammer: The headline feature here is the hammer function. Essentially, these are more powerful machines designed for serious drilling
Battery powered
Batteries for cordless drills (and other power tools) come in different AH (amp hour) ratings – the higher the number, the longer the run time. A few points: When storing lithium ion batteries for
extended periods, it is recommended that they are charged to at least 50 per cent to ensure they are ready to be used when you are. Don’t try to charge hot batteries
or charge in hot areas – most chargers, in fact, won’t let you. Let them cool before charging to maximise the charge. Once charged, unplug your charger and remove the battery.
in masonry; however, they can run in non-hammer mode for heavy drilling in timber or metal.
Battery vs corded
It’s hard to argue with the convenience of cordless, but Wayne Beckwith, national training manager with Ryobi, is still an advocate for corded drills. “Unless you have a higher end, trade-model drill and additional high-AH batteries [see box], a corded drill is still going to be the best option for the DIYer in situations where you have lots of medium to large
holes to drill,” he says. When drilling into masonry, a battery hammer drill can be slow, making a corded drill a far more efficient choice, Wayne adds. The primary advantage of a cordless drill is convenience, of course, particularly if you’re working beyond easy reach of a power source. There’s also a possible safety advantage. “Battery drills have overload protection – if they jam, they cut out – but AC drills don’t. This means you can easily burn out the motor of a corded drill if you continually hold the trigger switch with a jammed bit,” explains Wayne.
The quality conundrum
Cordless drills can range in price from as little as $30 to more than $400. To break it down to basics, there are three main product quality groups. Entry-level DIY: Your best bet if you only need a drill infrequently for hanging curtain rods or assembling furniture. Price range: $30-$100 Expert amateur: Intended for regular use, these drills are more heavy-duty and have some professional features. Suitable for entry-level to serious DIY work. Price range: $100-$200 Trade-grade: Top-shelf, top-priced gear that is designed to be used daily. In other words, these tools will take a beating and keep on performing. For serious DIYers who need tools that guarantee power, precision and longevity. Price range: $200-$400+ u
Tricky jobs cheat sheet Timber (softwoods): High speed, low torque (rotational force) is suitable for most softwood situations, except when you’re using large spade bits, speed bores or hole saws.
bunnings.com.au
Timber (hardwoods): Low speed, high torque will be more efficient, especially for larger holes. If you’re pre-drilling hardwood for nailing or screwing, you can use high speed.
|
bunnings
Metals, ferrous (containing iron): Drill metals thicker than 1.5mm on low speed, high torque so drill bit doesn’t overheat. Always use a bit graded for metal and consider using drill-cutting oil on tip of bit.
Metals, nonferrous (e.g. aluminium, copper): Most can be drilled at high speed, low torque, but if the material is thicker than 5mm, it may be wiser to drill on a low speed.
Masonry (e.g. bricks, concrete): You can use a high-speed hammer setting. It’s recommended that you always use a good-quality masonry bit, as they will have a much longer life.
Ceramics, tiles and glass: High speed for small holes; low for larger. Use a specialised glass and tile bit, multipurpose bit (though not for glass) or diamond core bit.
Plastics and perspex: Drill on low speed, because high speed is prone to melting plastics. Make sure you’re only using sharp bits and the material is well supported to avoid chipping.

star performer in the busiest room of the house, tiles offer easy-care functionality and style options galore. They’re durable, water and heat resistant, and easy to maintain – plus they’re hygienic. Best of all, if you’re after a relatively simple update, you can install tiles yourself, with the correct know-how.
Design scope
Which tiles to choose for your splashback comes down to budget and personal preference on size, colour and design, says Nicole Budge of Johnson Tiles. “Finishes include gloss, satin, matt, lappato [semi-polished] and polished, with handcrafted and vintage-look tiles gaining popularity,” says Nicole, who recommends avoiding grit or anti-slip tiles on the splashback as their finish makes them harder to clean. Glazed ceramic, porcelain or glass mosaic tiles are easy to maintain, says Decor8 sales manager Grant Haffenden, while natural stone is unique in every piece and adds a luxurious note. Home work
Tiling a kitchen splashback can be a DIY project, but you do need to adhere to regulations and have the right tools for the job, says Grant. “Regulations apply to tiling behind an open-flame cooker and it’s important to follow grout installation and waterproofing requirements,” he explains. As a general rule, splashback materials need to be a minimum of 20cm from a gas flame. Subway tiles and mosaics are generally easier to install than larger formats, adds Grant. u

Fix it Refresh your grout
The grout look
C
eramic is one of the most robust materials around, but while your tiles might look as good as the day they were laid, grotty grout could be the unsightly blot that ruins the whole look of your bathroom. Cleaning or redoing your grout is no picnic, but the reward is an as-new space for the bargain price of pocket change and perspiration.
First, we clean
The best tool here is elbow grease, but a useful grout-cleaning kit can help you out. Before you start, remember your safety gear, including safety glasses, gloves and a respirator kit – filthy grout is stubborn and requires some heavy-duty chemicals to shift.
Give the tiles a good wipe before spraying on grout cleaner and leaving it to soak in. Use a stiff brush to scrub the grout, concentrating on mouldy areas. If the grout is still a bit discoloured, you can use a grout pen like White Knight’s to refresh the look. Simply draw along the grout lines to give your tired tiles a fresh outline. If your grout is stained beyond repair, chipped or crumbling, the only option may be to

start again. For smaller jobs, try a grout rake for easy removal, or arm yourself with a multi-tool if you’re doing the whole room. Re-grouting also gives you the opportunity to explore new colours, which can change the whole look of your bathroom.
Grouting tiles is a fairly straightforward job with a bit of know-how. The top tip from the pros is to swipe diagonally across the tiles to push grout into the gaps. Check out the ‘How to grout wall tiles’ video on the Bunnings website, then go forth and grout with confidence.
Seal the deal
If your tiles have been laid with epoxy grout, they do not need
to be sealed. For other grout, however, sealing is a laborious job worth doing, as it prevents bacteria and mould from growing and will ensure your grout looks good for longer. If you’re applying sealer to existing grout, make sure it’s clean and dry. If you’ve just regrouted the bathroom, leave the grout to cure for at least 72 hours before sealing. Apply sealer according to the manufacturer’s directions; some sealants can be used over both tiles and grout, while others can only be used on grout. Set aside time to do this once a year and your grout will keep its good looks for longer. u

Clever water-saving ideas will reduce your garden’s impact on the environment
E
very garden needs the right amount of water to perform at its best. With autumn’s more comfortable temperatures and a bit of rain around, now is a great time to grow your garden’s green credentials by getting it into water-saving shape.
Think tanks
Michael Smit, technical and sustainability manager at Kingspan Water & Energy, suggests rainwater harvesting as one of the most accessible ways to improve your
home’s sustainability. “It also reduces the impact of increased population growth and climate change on urban stormwater, improving local waterway health and reducing flooding risks and costs,” he says. Rainwater tanks are a pretty simple retrofit, but you will need specialised advice and then tradie help to plumb one in and organise the pump system. A 5000-litre tank is the minimum useful size for an average garden – you’ll need a larger one if you want to connect to the laundry and toilet cisterns as well. }
Your garden’s water-wasting weakest link may be your hoses, fittings and taps. If you have a dripping tap, change the washer. Check hoses for leaks and replace or repair if needed. Tighten loose or leaking hose fittings. Check and replace the black rubber O rings on tap connectors, sprinklers and hose nozzles.

Fix it With milder temperatures and good levels of soil moisture, autumn is the perfect time to be planting
Smart planting
“Using quality water-saving products at the recommended intervals can reduce water use by up to 50 per cent” Mark Ellis, Scotts Australia
Greywater – indoor wastewater excluding that from toilets – can be reused via a simple dispersal device, but with caution. Greywater will often contain bacteria and viruses, so always disperse above ground, as sunlight will, to some degree, sterilise the water. Never disperse using a system that allows the output to mist. The trick is not to distribute too much to one area – waterlogging can occur and overload the soil with ingredients found in detergents. Check with your local council before using greywater, as many have tight restrictions on use, particularly in suburban areas.
Hose down
A well-designed irrigation system delivers the right amount of water where it’s needed. A large multi-zoned system may need professional installation, but drip-line irrigation is a straightforward DIY project. bunnings.com.au

Soil solutions
Even the best soil can have issues with water absorption. “Many water problems start at the surface of the soil – water can’t penetrate and runs off,” says Mark Ellis from garden products suppliers Scotts Australia. Wetting agents, which come in liquids or granules, change the surface tension of water, allowing it to better penetrate the soil and reach plant roots. A more labour-intensive fix is to dig in soil improvers such as compost or composted manures, improving the soil structure and increasing biological activity, which will naturally boost water-holding capacity. Mulching will help retain moisture in the soil and reduce run-off, while also diminishing soil erosion, suppressing weeds and insulating against temperature extremes. Spread your chosen mulch around 4cm thick and keep it at least 5cm away from plant stems or trunks. u

In the mow
With the main growing season just a memory, it’s time to give your mower a little TLC if you want to keep it in tip-top shape. Safety first though: always disconnect the spark plug lead before you work on your mower, and read the instruction manual for info specific to your machine.
Why: A dirty or damaged spark plug can make the mower hard to start and cause spluttering. How: Disconnect lead and remove plug with a socket wrench. If sooty, clean with fine steel wool. Replace if you can’t recall when it was last changed.
IT’S NOT RECOMMENDED THAT YOU TURN YOUR MOWER UPSIDE DOWN. CHECK YOUR MANUAL FOR EXACT INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO TILT IT TO ACCESS THE UNDERSIDE
PRO TIP
OIL
Why: Four-stroke engines need clean oil at the right level to keep cylinders lubricated. How: Stand mower on a level surface for at least 30 minutes, and then pull out the dipstick – oil should be between the lines and reasonably clear. Top up with suitable mower engine oil or, if dirty, change the oil with an oil change pump kit.

Why: Material left on the mower may cause corrosion, as well as harbour diseases that can damage the lawn. How: If mower has a cleaning port, attach hose to it, turn it on and run mower for a minute to self-clean – not too high to avoid splattering. Clean body with specialised or car-cleaning product. Dry before you store it.

AIR FILTER
Why: The engine needs air to mix with fuel to run smoothly. How: The air filter will have a snap-off or screw-down cover. Remove carefully, then gently remove the filter. Use a clean, dry paintbrush to dust the outside. Replace if ratty.
OVERALL CLEAN DEFUELLING
Why: Clean, sharp blades are essential for a quality cut and healthy grass. How: Disconnect spark plug lead. Turn off fuel if there’s a fuel tap. Wear thick gloves and clean blades using a stiff brush. Blade edges should be moderately sharp and free from chips or dents. Replace if blades are blunt or damaged.

Why: Mower fuel is volatile and will reduce in quality if left for a few months. How: The simplest way to defuel is to run the mower dry the last time you use it for the season. Otherwise, siphon off the fuel – outdoors and carefully – into a container and either use in another machine or dispose of appropriately. u

abulously practical as it comes, the Flexi Storage ‘Clever Cube’ four-cube unit has been customised three ways to make bespoke storage for different spaces. Hooks and a lick of paint make a stylish unit for garden tools. Flip it sideways and add a lid, castors and aluminium casing to create discreet storage for hanging files; great for a home office. Finally, a neat timber top and some handy baskets for shoes make it a stylish addition to the hallway. PRO TIP If you intend to paint the cube, its non-porous melamine surface needs to be roughened so the paint adheres. Sand all over using a random orbital sander with 180-grit sanding paper, then apply a good primer such as White Knight Prep Rite griplock primer, using a mini roller with microfibre cover. If bubbles appear in the primer coat, allow to dry, sand and reapply.

turdy but a bit battered, this timber console was ripe for renovation. Before you remove the backing of the adhesive film, match up the printed pattern and centre the join in the middle of the table. Make a small snip at the side to mark where you’ll need to cut. Follow grid marks on the backing paper to cut each piece for your console – how many pieces you need will of course depend on the size of the piece. Mark the orientation on the back of the adhesive film so you know exactly where to position each piece you’ve cut. To cover the drawer face, position the piece so it folds into the drawer at the front and wraps around either side of the drawer by at least 25mm.

To cover the tabletop, take the adhesive film and pull the backing away by about 50mm from the front of the film and position under the front edge of the tabletop, checking it’s straight on both sides. Gradually pull the backing paper from underneath the film while pushing from the top with a plastic scraper. Use the scraper to tuck film under the tabletop and trim away excess with a utility knife. For the drawer, tuck the underneath edge into the join to ensure the drawer opens smoothly. Fold corners in the same way you’d wrap a gift, pushing one side flat then folding the top section over, adhesive side down.
2
3
Smooth over dents and deep scratches with timber filler, and leave to dry. Use the 120-grit sandpaper and sanding block to remove chipped paint or flaking varnish, dirt and scratches, then repeat with the 180-grit for a silky finish. Wipe surfaces with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove dust and ensure paint adheres evenly.
Brush three-in-one primer over all surfaces of the old timber console that need to be painted – don’t forget the inside drawer. Leave to dry. Give the paint a good stir to distribute heavy particles, then pour into tray. Use the mini roller with microfibre cover to apply the first coat of paint to the console, leave to dry, then repeat.
Between coats
Load roller with paint and cover with plastic wrap, ensuring it’s well sealed. Pour excess paint back into can and leave tray to dry. When ready to re-use, simply pull off the film of dry paint. Stir paint for at least a minute before refilling tray.
6
7
Wipe over the film to remove any dust. Shake the can of varnish. Hold it about 250mm away from the console, then apply a light, even coat. Let it dry before you apply a second coat. Varnish helps to seal the join and protect against moisture damage.
To attach the handles, measure halfway down the drawer front and 150mm from either side, then use the drill with the 4.5mm bit to make the holes. Mark the screw length, snap to size (see below), then attach the handles, tightening with a screwdriver. u
Caring for adhesive film
How to snap a screw
Used on furniture, adhesive film is here for a good time, not a long time. Fit a glass top if the table will see heavy traffic. Touch up corners with glue to help it last.
Hold screw horizontally with multi-grip pliers close to the mark. Hold the combination pliers with your other hand and pull down on the shaft to snap the screw.

no reason you should be putting up with surfaces that are more Shrek than Thor. There are a number of different ways to refinish or replace your benchtops, which require varying levels of investment and DIY expertise. Let’s explore the possibilities.
If your existing benchtops aren’t salvageable, replacing them might be the best option. “There are a few things to consider before planning for a swap,” says Kaboodle Kitchen marketing manager Lisa Mayski. “As all kitchens are unique, a proper inspection of the space will determine whether it is suitable. The best type for a benchtop swap is an independent laminate or timber top that is screwed from the underside of cabinet support rails into the benchtop. It should not be glued or be part of the kitchen cabinetry structure. Any benchtop with the substrate screwed from the top may cause some challenges.” Keep in mind that walls – especially in older houses – are quite often out of square. If you’re replacing the splashback at the same time, this can be helpful in covering any small gaps between the wall and your bench. If, however, you’re not looking to replace the splashback, you’ll need to look at how closely the tiles are laid above the existing benchtop, as they may be dislodged in the removal process. Slimline and super-thick benchtops have each enjoyed ‘it’ status in recent years, but the simplest option is to stick with your existing benchtop thickness so as not to affect the splashback. “Replacing your benchtop with the same thickness top will make life a lot easier when it comes time to installing it,” adds Lisa.

The options
Benchtop choices LAMINATE
With patterned laminates coming on in leaps and bounds over recent years, it’s easy to get the look of a high-end finish on a budget. “Durable laminate surfaces offer affordable stone-inspired, wood grain and marble-look options,” says Lisa. TIMBER
Timber in either an oiled or stained finish has a softer look that complements the hard surfaces of a kitchen. “Timber benchtops add warmth and textural interest to a space, especially when combined with solid tones,” adds Lisa. STONE
While not a DIY job, a stone benchtop will add wow factor. Natural and engineered stone benchtops can be custom cut. Check with a licensed builder that your kitchen footings, floor and cabinetry can take the weight of stone. Stone also needs a substrate, or additional layer, on top of the cabinets before installation.

Quick fixes
Specialist products, such as Rust-Oleum Benchtop Transformations, or a covering of White Knight Laminate Paint finished with White Knight Benchtop Protective Coating, can be used to revamp laminate and melamine benchtops. Rust-Oleum also offers a Countertop Transformations kit that gives a granite-effect finish. Existing timber benchtops can be sanded and stained or oiled to revive them. Use an electric sander to prepare the surface and remove all dust before applying the finish. As with any painted or stained benchtop, it will need at least 48 hours to dry before using it. Check the product guide for exact instructions.
Consult the experts to replace a stone or engineered stone worktop
Expert tips
Replacing your kitchen benchtop can be a DIY job, but there are a few tips to bear in mind. Measure carefully – twice! – taking into consideration the thickness of the splashback that the new bench will sit under. Check if the walls are straight and, if not, order a size slightly over what you need, as you can always plane it back where necessary. The best advice for removing the benchtop is to do it carefully! Call in a licensed tradie to disconnect the services. Cut any silicone from under the splashback and slide the benchtop out rather than pull it up, to avoid dislodging tiles. You can use the old pieces of benchtop to trace templates for sink and stove cutouts on the new bench. Work slowly and carefully when putting on the new benchtop, following the installation instructions, which will include details on where to position the joins. u

While watering is fun for littlies, installing irrigation helps to keep a regular schedule

Water ways
Creating a child-friendly edible garden is an enjoyable way to get grubby with the kids as well as engaging them with the great outdoors
T
he squish and squelch of damp earth, and the smell of soil – playing in the dirt is one of those simple joys of childhood, and it’s an experience you can relive when you get out in the garden with your little ones. “Planting a vegie patch is the perfect place to start, especially as they can look forward to the reward of tasty food,” says Steve Falcioni, marketing manager at OCP’s Eco-Organic Garden. It’s time for our mini gardeners to get their hands dirty.
Build it right
“For maximum buy-in, give kids their own spot and let them decide what they want to grow,” says Steve. Choose a space close to the house and make sure the bed is low and narrow so they can easily reach it and access their produce. For a no-fuss approach, consider Birdies’ 4 Kids 6-in-1 modular raised garden bed, which uses bright colours and the choice of six different shapes to engage budding gardeners. Fill the bed with bags of good-quality organic garden soil and you’re ready to start planting.
Easy growers
Before you let loose in store, narrow your plant selection to a few easy growers. “Pea seeds are large and easy to handle, plus they grow fast and are sweet enough to be eaten straight from the plant,” says Steve. Lettuce is also a good choice, and super easy to grow in pots or beds. To really get the senses tingling, look for seedlings of

Pest busters
“Your homegrown goodies won’t go unnoticed by hungry, uninvited guests!” says Steve. “But pest attacks are an opportunity to teach kids to be observant and practise problem-solving skills.” Have a pest hunt – evening or night, armed with a torch, are the best times for a raid. Can they be picked off (caterpillars), blasted with a jet of water (aphids), or is more help needed? A fun solution to some pest problems is to release predatory insects such as lady beetles. Five predatory insects are sold in the Eco-Organic Garden Backyard Buddies range (available all over Australia except WA – ask at the Special Orders Desk). “They’re delivered to your door, and kids love releasing them into the garden,” says Steve. u

Child’s play
Now comes the fun part – watching the magic happen! Regular watering is key for growth, and getting out with the hose is fun and engaging for little ones, but establishing a regular watering schedule can be tough for kids. For peace of mind, consider installing irrigation. “Dripline irrigation systems are easy for beginners and you can create your own system using Holman Flex-Tube and micro fittings,” says Shenei Croll from Holman. “Alternatively, a dripping hose paired with a tap timer is perfect for delivering precise amounts of water at the right times.”

Where it grows:
Why we love it:
This pretty native plant prefers a sunny spot and especially loves a coastal garden, but it can also tolerate light frosts and is suitable for temperate to subtropical climates, making it a great all-rounder that will grow happily in most gardens. It requires good drainage, though once established it won’t need a lot of water.
Masses of cylindrical flower heads sprout through autumn, attracting native birds and bees. The flower heads are made up of hundreds of individual florets that together give the plant its celebratory ‘birthday candle’ look. u FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants *Please note this plant is not available in NT.
