Welcome

A word from our editor I love this time of year for all sorts of reasons – family visits, presents and the chance to go crazy with the festive lights – but also high on the list is the opportunity to tackle a few jobs. When the post-Christmas holiday approaches, that’s when I want to hit the ‘big project’ button and get stuck

into those tasks that need more than a weekend. A house full of guests will almost certainly motivate me to resolve the problematic storage-free zone of the laundry – it doubles as a bathroom when we have visitors, so it really needs to stop being a dumping ground for everything from outdoor shoes to the whipper snipper! If you’re also in tidy-up-forguests mode, you might enjoy our story on sprucing up your outdoor space (page 53) for visitors, while for Christmas Day itself, our festive feast prepared on the barbecue (all except for the pavlova!) is designed to be easy, so the cook gets to enjoy the day as much as everyone else. Find it on page 13. Enjoy the issue!

1 A day ahead of serving, make the glaze. Put juice, syrup, sugar and vinegar in a medium pan over a medium heat. Stir until sugar has dissolved. Boil for 20 minutes or until thickened slightly; cool (it will thicken further when cooled). Store in a container in the fridge. 2 With the lid down, preheat barbecue to 150°C. Make a cut around shank of ham, about 8cm in from the end. Cut around rind at the widest end. Insert your fingers under rind and rub across ham between rind and fat, peeling back rind, exposing the white fat layer, until you reach the shank. Remove rind and discard. 3 Using the tip of a sharp knife, score fat in 2cm-wide diagonal slices across top of ham. Decorate by pushing in cloves. Pour a 2cm layer of water in the bottom of a large roasting pan that will fit in your barbecue. Place ham on a rack in roasting pan (see Pro Tip). Brush a quarter of glaze over the top. Cover the shank end with foil. 4 Roast for 45 minutes, with lid down, brushing with the glaze and turning the pan twice during cooking. Importantly, keep refilling the water in pan for the entire cooking time or the glaze will burn on the bottom of the pan. 5 Increase heat to 170°C. Brush ham with more glaze. Continue to cook ham, with lid down, turning the pan for an even colour and refilling water in bottom of pan, for a further 45-50 minutes or until golden. Remove the ham from the pan to a platter and rest for up to 30 minutes before carving. Serve with any leftover warmed glaze spooned over (see Note, left).

Serves 8-10  1 tbsp Szechuan peppercorns

(see Note)  2 tsp sea salt flakes  11/2 tsp dried chilli flakes  Cracked black pepper, to taste  32 (1.5kg) large green king prawns, peeled, leaving tails intact, and deveined  2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra Barbecued salmon with for greasing tahini and chimichurri  2 garlic cloves, crushed  3/4 cup fried shallots (see Note)  1 lime  Spring onion strips and sriracha mayo (see Note), to serve 1 Place the Szechuan peppercorns, salt and chilli flakes in a mortar and grind with a pestle until finely crushed. Season with pepper. Place the prawns, oil and garlic in a large bowl and stir until coated. Sprinkle with the Szechuan peppercorn mix and stir until evenly combined. 2 Insert a soaked 25cm wooden skewer (see Pro Tip) into each prawn, starting at the tail through to the top. Make up to this point and refrigerate overnight if desired. 3 Preheat an oiled barbecue plate to medium. Crush the fried shallots with your hand to form crumbs on a plate. Roll the prawn skewers in the fried shallot crumbs to coat lightly. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side or until cooked through. 4 Transfer to a serving platter. Zest the lime over the prawns. Cut the lime into wedges, squeeze some juice over the prawns, then sprinkle the prawns with the spring onion. Serve with the remaining lime wedges and sriracha mayo.

1 cup coriander leaves, plus  extra sprigs to garnish  ½ cup firmly packed flat-leaf

Stir in the lemon zest, chilli, garlic, olive oil and vinegar. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the surface of the sauce with plastic wrap to avoid discolouring. It is best made on the day of serving. 3 Heat an oiled barbecue plate to medium-high. Cook the salmon skin-side down with the lid down for 10 minutes or until the skin is crisp. Use a fish spatula or long wide spatula to turn the salmon over. Cook for a further 5 minutes or until almost cooked through to the centre. 4 Carefully loosen the salmon flesh from the grill with spatula without tearing it. Transfer to a serving platter, skin-side down, and rest for 5 minutes. Drizzle with the tahini sauce, spoon over some of the chimichurri and garnish the platter with extra coriander sprigs. 1 Grease a 40cm x 32cm rectangular oven tray and line with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 120°C. 2 Beat the egg whites in the large bowl of an electric mixer until frothy. With the motor running, gradually add the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition, until the sugar is dissolved and the meringue is thick and glossy. This should take about 15 minutes. 3 Beat in the cornflour and vinegar until just combined. Dollop 8 large spoonfuls in a rectangle on the prepared tray. Swirl with a spoon to join them together. 4 Cook for 1 hour or until dry and crisp on top. Turn oven off and allow to cool in oven with the door closed. This can be made up to 2 days ahead. Keep in a container or covered with plastic wrap on a tray, in a dry place away from moisture. 5 To make the berry sauce, place the berries, sugar and vanilla bean paste in a saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Simmer for 5 minutes or until the berries soften and a thick syrup has formed. Allow to cool to room temperature. Add a little water to thin if needed. 6 Whip the cream until soft peaks form. Spread the cream on the meringue. Drizzle with the berry sauce and decorate with fresh raspberries, frozen blackberries or blueberries. Decorate with basil or mint if desired. Dust with icing sugar and serve. ◆ bunnings.com.au |

Add living space to your place by transforming an underutilised garage into an office or granny flat

o you feel like your house is not quite big enough, but an extension seems too pricey? You might be able to convert your garage into an office, or even a granny flat that you can let out. “Typically a garage conversion costs around half of what a new build under the main roof would,” says architect Grant Lucas (adelaideresidentialarchitect.grantlucasarchitect.com.au).

Hit the walls

 If a wall is closer than 900mm to any property boundary, or a secondary dwelling is located within 1800mm of the principal dwelling, the wall would need to be fire-rated. This may mean, among other things, that you cannot have a window or door within that wall.  The walls must be waterproofed by applying membrane or attaching wall wrap. Plus, “The walls and ceiling will need to be insulated and lined with plasterboard,” says Grant.  In NSW, if you are transforming the garage into a granny flat, it will need Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) certification for energy efficiency. In other states and territories, the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) certificate applies to residential dwellings.  For heating and cooling, consider a reverse-cycle air conditioner. Utilising cross-ventilation can reduce your cooling costs, so interior walls should be designed to promote the flow of air when windows are open.

Let there be light! A habitable structure must have windows with an area at least 10 per cent of the floor area. “The layout of an under-main-roof conversion is usually predefined by the original roller door opening,” explains Grant. The cheapest and easiest conversion may involve removing the garage door and replacing it with a window suite, but this could have engineering implications for the original foundation. “The likelihood is that the existing footing will amply take the loadings but you will need to have the original house’s engineering drawings to reveal this information,” he explains. Power and a shower Many garages only have a 15-amp light circuit, so a licensed electrician will have to upgrade the power supply. “If you’re looking at installing air conditioning and electric cooking facilities, you would have to run a larger cable, with a new sub board installed,” says electrician Dean Marsh (facebook. com/deanmarshelectrical). And if there will be a tenant living in the new dwelling, you’ll have to hire a suitably qualified electrician to install metering. Plumbing is a big-ticket item, and one you can leave out if you’re just planning a living area or home office. But if you want a bathroom, the shower area will need to be suitably waterproofed by a licensed plumber, and drainage provided. One plumbing solution is to have housings for waste pipes cut into the concrete slab. In all, it’s quite a checklist to consider – but once the work is done and the dust has settled, you’ll have a new and comfortable extra space to call home. ¿

ome summer, the best place to dine and entertain is outside. The centrepiece for long lazy lunches, backyard barbecues and family dinners is a great table that suits your needs and can withstand the elements. Whether upgrading an old setting or furnishing a new area, take the time to explore all the options of size, shape, materials and mix-and-match chair styles. 

Plan it Before you buy

Key questions Think about your needs and the type of space you’re planning to furnish. How many people will be regularly using the table? Do you often host large dinner parties, or is it mostly for weeknight family meals? “If you only entertain occasionally, rather than overcrowd your outdoor space with a long table, a better option might be something smaller which can be extended when required,” suggests Hartman sales manager Josh Fenton. Also consider the importance of form versus functionality. “If you’re after more of a design piece, which is rarely used, your priorities might be different from those of someone looking for a low-maintenance, easy clean table, which is used from breakfast through to dinner,” says Josh. A clear idea of your needs will help refine your search. Measure up Before hitting the shops, look at the layout and dimensions of your outdoor area. “The size and shape of the space will dictate the purchase,” says Bunnings furniture buyer Court Taylor. If you’ve got a generous open-plan zone, decide where you’d like to position the table and measure the floor area. For comfortable seating and circulation around the table, Court recommends allowing at least one metre clearance from other pieces of furniture and walls.

Hartman ‘Nice’ dining chairs, $159 each, I/N: 3192582, and ‘Polaris’ 110cm round dining table, $449, I/N: 3192379

Get in shape As most decks and courtyards are rectangular or square, rectangular tables are a popular option. “Matching the table shape to the room creates a balanced, visually harmonious setting,” says Court. “Rectangular styles allow the greatest amount of serving space, comfortable seating arrangements and can accommodate extra chairs at the head of the table.” In smaller spaces or open-plan areas that are less visually symmetrical, a round table may be more suitable. “The curved edges can be less disruptive to traffic flow and a round table setting has an intimate feel which is great for conversation,” explains Josh. If you love a quick snack, a bar table provides a cafe vibe. “Combining contrasting heights, like a bar table alongside a lounge, can work well in small areas as it leads the eye up and down to create a layered look,” suggests Court. 

PRO TIP While many timbers are hardwearing, you’ll need to lavish a little love with a regular coat of oil to maintain their good looks

Mix it up While you can buy a matching setting, mixing up your table and chairs gives a more individual look that is right on trend. Comfort is paramount when choosing seats, particularly if you like long, lazy lunches. With style, it’s often a matter of personal preference – whether you like a seat with arms, cushioning, a high or curved back, or the feel of a certain material. Whatever you choose, check the chair against your chosen table – it has to fit comfortably under the lip but also be the right height for dining (so, if possible, sit on it at the table). Ensure there’s room to push it back safely. If you have a concrete table, introducing timber chairs will add warmth, while rope chairs provide textural contrast and softening curves. Bench seats are another option; they evoke a casual feel and reduce the clutter of individual chairs. “They’re also great for fitting lots of kids,” adds Josh who, for the best of both worlds, recommends using a bench on one side with chairs on the other.

Plan it Material considerations Look at style, functionality, maintenance and visual weight. “A table’s colour and material will influence how big it feels in a room,” explains Court Taylor. Timber With its natural grain and colour, timber adds a tactile, earthy feel. “Generally, you get what you pay for,” says Court, who recommends denser hardwoods like teak and eucalypt, which are longer lasting and feel solid. For timber from responsible sources, Josh Fenton advises looking for 100 per cent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. Aluminium Lightweight and relatively maintenance free, aluminium is a great option, particularly if you live near the beach, as it won’t succumb to rust. It comes in a range of colours, so you can match your table to the walls or floor for a cohesive look. Glass The beauty of glass is that it allows light to filter through. “This makes a glass tabletop ideal to brighten a dark outdoor area or enhance the sense of space,” says Court. It shows fingerprints and dust, but bar a quick wipe is relatively maintenance free. Concrete Bang on trend, concrete merges sleek style with the practicality of an easy-clean solid surface. Concrete tables can be incredibly heavy, so it’s worthwhile ensuring your flooring or deck can cope with the additional weight. On the plus side, it’s less likely to be moved around in the wind. Tiles A tiled tabletop is an effective way to introduce personality and pattern to your alfresco space. “The combination of timber and tile means it looks right at home on either a deck or paved courtyard, and is a real focal point,” says Josh. ◆

Child’s play

Plan it Family-friendly gardens

Foster a love of nature with a garden that invites your kids to venture outside

T

he backyard is the perfect place for families to spend time together, especially with children. When it comes to the outdoors, there is so much to explore, discover and play with (mud pies, anyone?). Kids can lose interest fast, but with a little planning, it’s easy to come up with some boredom busters to keep them entertained, and to create a garden that’s perfect for the whole family.

Fun ahoy!

Space for play “An excellent way to encourage outdoor and creative play is to give kids their own space,” says Matt Gerakios, urban horticultural consultant at Phyton Australia (phytonaustralia.com.au). “It also gives them an opportunity to take ownership and responsibility of their own play equipment, garden beds and, hopefully, any mess, too!” Ask littlies to be involved in the design process and they’re more likely to be

excited by their newfound responsibility. It will help if you give them options, so you can guide them in the right direction. Otherwise, you may end up with a kaleidoscope of colourful toys and equipment. A cubby house, swing set or raised garden beds are just a few ideas you can build on. “If you’re short on space, remember to think vertically as well as horizontally – a raised cubby can instantly add square metres to your space, and a vertical fence planter can make great use of a small sunny spot,” says Matt. Also consider a sheet of ply painted in chalkboard paint, or pavers laid out in a hopscotch }

Plan it pattern. Simple ideas can often be the best, and can be incorporated into your garden without too much disruption. “Keep it fairly close to the house, so you can keep an eye on the littlies, but also give them their space and a sense of privacy,” adds Matt. Ground control Soft surfaces that can deal with foot traffic and the odd tumble are perfect for play areas, says Nick Katsoulis of Hortic (instagram.com/hortic_culture). “Couch or kikuyu lawns are great options as they’re soft and hard-wearing, but for a stylish alternative, try mondo grass or dichondra,” he suggests. “For high foot traffic areas or in areas with deep shade, quality synthetic turf is ideal, providing the area is properly prepared.” It’s low maintenance, but still soft underfoot – no grazed knees here!

Teen retreat As your kids grow, so too should the garden. Consider trading in the sandpit or wading pool and transforming areas so they can hang with their friends. “Sandstone block seats coupled with lounging cushions around a fire pit makes for an attractive retreat,” says Nick. You can also transform a shed into a ‘no adult zone’; simply add a few themed furnishings – think lounge chairs, wall hangings and decorative ornaments – for an instant facelift.

“A vegie garden is a great way to get the kids interested in gardening, and there is plenty of produce to grow year-round,” says Nick. Look for raised vegie beds so they’re easy to reach, and consider installing a simple, drip irrigation system for the days when kids forget to water. When it comes to plant choices, look for quick rewards. “Fast-growing fruits and vegies, like strawberries, blueberries and radishes, are sure to keep kids intrigued,” says Matt. Interplant with carrots and snow peas – they look fun and make a great garden snack. Florals can feature, too. Violas and marigolds are pretty and edible, while sunflowers are just a joy to grow. Play a game to see who can grow the tallest sunflower!

Creating a dedicated ‘mini domain’ for little ones makes outdoor imaginative play extra appealing Swing Slide Climb ‘Hut’ cubby house, $199, I/N: 3321702, painted in Dulux Domino, White Exchange Half and Orangeade paints. Pretty and practical Adults deserve a space in the garden too, of course, and the good news is you can have both, without compromising too much on style or practicality. Create informal garden ‘rooms’, by framing areas of the backyard with low hedges or medium-sized shrubs. “This creates distinct zones, giving both kids and adults their space. Plus, it can help buffer low-flying balls, too,” says Nick. Include a winding pathway between the spaces, perhaps with crazy paving or large flagstone pavers, to provide an enjoyable but attractive surface to play ball or ride bikes. Garden ornaments, such as pinwheels, metal garden animals and decorative solar lights, create visual interest, can fire the imagination, and are incredibly pleasing for the whole family.

Safety first Kids will be kids, and you can bet they won’t always wear sunscreen or a hat while playing. If this sounds like yours, Matt says to consider shade plants or a shade sail. “Creating seasonal shade in parts of the garden can be achieved with deciduous trees such as maple, or even deciduous vines over an arbour or pergola,” he says. “Where these aren’t an option, consider a shade sail or cloth – they’re available in different colours and degrees of sun block out.” Remember, all bodies of water, including small ponds, wading pools and bubbling water features, can also be risky for children. Depending on the depth of the pool or pond, you may need to install fencing or use a safety grid across the top to prevent children from falling in.

Scent of success Choose plants with fragrance, colour and texture to make the garden interesting for children

For over 40 years, Sherlock has been Australia’s trusted brand for wheelbarrows. Lemon-scented myrtle (Backhousia citriodora): Fragrant, lemon-scented leaves with white fluffy flowerheads in summer and autumn.

Purple fountain grass (Pennisetum advena ‘Rubrum’): Tufts of purple leaves with gorgeous ‘cat tail’-like heads.

Need to know Remember, not all plants mix well with kids. Some, such as oleander Thevetia peruviana and Nerium oleander, are toxic. Avoid plants with berries that curious kids may want to sample, as some are poisonous (for example white cedar), and steer clear of plants with thorns, spikes or prickles that can poke eyes or irritate skin. If there’s bee allergy in your family, look at options less likely to attract them. It’s wise to do your research well before you make your plant selection. ◆

Pigface (Carpobrotus glaucescens): Forms a thick carpet of fleshy leaves, covered with pink, yellow or white daisy-like blooms in spring and summer.

For gardeners, DIYers or the home handyman, there is a Sherlock for you.

Before Rachel & Rachel

LIVING ROOM/ H A L LW AY Lifestyle gurus Rachel Aust (@rachelaust) and Rachel Lee (@rachelleea) paired up to tackle the living room and hallway. As the first spaces guests tend to see, the rooms needed to make an impression, as well as being practical. The living room’s greatest asset was light. “I loved that it had a huge window with natural light filtering through,” says Rachel Aust. The room has an airy appeal that the pair capitalised on with a palette of whites, warm neutrals and coastal blue.

Living room and hallway TOTAL BUDGET

$5,000

Throwing shapes The home’s biggest deficit was character, with every team describing the original space as “bland” and “boring”. The Rachels tackled this in the hallway by using Porta pre-primed DAR pine moulding. “I liked the idea of creating texture on the wall,” says Rachel Aust. “We used a chevron design and the way the arrows are pointing almost leads you through the hall.” Painted in Dulux Jimbaran Bay, the space is now anything but dull!

Picture perfect Devoting one side of the living room to a gallery wall was particularly effective. A mix of op shop frames were spraypainted and filled with black-and-white photos for a cohesive look. The frames are attached to the walls with removable Command picture-hanging strips, making this a great styling trick for renters and homeowners alike.

Fully furnished Furnishing a home is a massive expense for new homeowners, but the Rachels showed how you can save costs, kitting out the living room with second-hand finds and upcycling pieces, including the coffee table. “It was honestly the ugliest thing!” says Rachel Lee. “It had big thick wooden legs, which we took off and switched out for hairpin legs. We painted it white and totally transformed this old, very clunky table into something that looked really new and stylish.”

Brothers Tim and Mat (@timmatau), chippies by trade, hit the backyard. “It was reasonably big, but looked small because the way it was laid out hadn’t made the best use of the space,” says Tim. “Once we stripped a lot of the old garden out, it became a lot bigger than we expected.” The fence was extended up with fence toppers for privacy, and painted in Dulux Colorbond Monument.

Off the wall Northcote Pottery weathering steel panels were used to break up the expanse of dark fence and add another design element to the space. Tim and Mat also got innovative with the screens, using one as a vertical garden (pictured below left). Hit the deck “We were always thinking, ‘What’s a way to make this space usable and make people want to stay out here?’,” says Tim. Item number one was a good deck to replace the existing, too-small slab of concrete. Good Times modular decking made this an easy win. “You can basically just lay it straight over the concrete. It’s got adjustable legs on it so you can use the concrete as your foundation,” says Tim. Laying the decking panels in different directions delivered a fun, patchwork look. The team added a table, chairs and a DIY bench seat (made from besser blocks and timber fence panels) to complete the chic makeover. 

Textured treat Tim and Mat played with a medley of flooring options. Contrasting with the warmth of the decking, they chose pebbles and pavers, and MaxPRO pebble resurfacer to cover the last slab of concrete. “The pebblecrete adds a nice texture as you walk out the door,” says Tim.

The pair used the Dulux Renovation Range to paint the tiles glossy white, a contrast with walls in Taubmans Cape Blue. “Paired with the white panelling, we felt that colour was both coastal and a bit traditional,” says Shayden.

Tasked with reinventing the main bathroom and the ensuite, Shayden and Georgia Whipps of Mooch Style (@moochstyle) had a tough assignment, but a bath in good nick and smart layouts meant they could focus on cosmetic changes. “Cohesion was front of mind for us and it’s always convenient to use the same products. But we didn’t want the bathrooms to be exactly the same, so they’re similar but with tweaks to give each their own personality,” says Shayden. Methven ‘Krome’ WELS 3-star 9L/min 150mm black hi rise shower, $109. I/N: 5003776. Mondella ‘Cadenza’ WELS 4-star 3-4.5L/min close coupled rimless toilet suite, $189, I/N: 0095294. Sabco pressed metal toilet set with bamboo handle in Black, $15.75, I/N: 0066075.

Splash the cash Though Shayden and Georgia were all about wallet-friendly hacks, they did stretch the budget with two items. The first was replacing the toilets. “That was not a pretty job. But Bunnings offers an installation service when you purchase a toilet,” says Shayden. The other – arguably more exciting – addition was the Easycraft ‘EasyCLAD’ wet area primed wall lining, which adds a layer of character and helps to counteract the relatively low ceilings. “The vertical lines in the VJ panel make the room look taller,” explains Shayden.

Bargain hunters The team named the Mondella ‘Cadenza’ vanity as their greatest steal. “It’s quite an affordable product, but it looks really high end because you can customise it with different tops,” says Shayden. Paired with a meranti vanity top and a Mondella ‘Rumba’ basin, it’s a great way to get a custom look on a budget. bunnings.com.au |

KIDS’ BEDROOM

Bursting with character and fun, this children’s dream space is a far cry from the blank canvas that first greeted Poppy Lee (@hellopoppylee). “It just felt old and unloved, a bit of a dead space,” says Poppy, who injected the room with loads of life, using easy makes and budget-friendly upcycling.

Kids’ bedroom TOTAL BUDGET

$2,500

Shutter speed The biggest wedge of the budget went on the EasyAS plantation shutters. “They’re so affordable and super easy to put together – easier than most flat-pack furniture!” says Poppy. Providing privacy, security and light, they also fit in perfectly with the home’s coastal, casual tone. Poppy created a cute play tent from a Wagner canvas drop sheet

Colouring in As Poppy points out, colouring isn’t just for kids: “Paint is a clear way to absolutely transform a room – it’s a bargain and has the most impact in changing a space.” For this room, she went with Dulux Happy Days on most of the walls, a beautiful blue-grey that’s gender neutral and ageless. For the remaining wall, she got creative, trawling through Pinterest and settling on a whimsical mountain mural (in Dulux Panda Pod, Grey Pail, Bay’s Water and Happy Days), which she says is simple enough for anyone to do, regardless of their skills. ◆ bunnings.com.au |

Come clean How to make your bathroom sparkle and shine before the holiday hordes descend

Have a clearout Facing an avalanche of shampoo bottles and old razors? “Decluttering is so important. It means you don’t have to find storage for items you don’t need,” says professional organiser Amy Revell (artofdecluttering.com.au). “Start with out of date items. If it’s older than 12 months you shouldn’t be putting it on your face or body, so throw it out.” Silicone success “Nothing looks worse than old, mouldy or discoloured silicone,” says Kibira Sattieva, household expert at Selleys. Following her advice, use a sharp knife to cut away the old silicone, then apply Selleys Silicone Remover on the surface. “Wait two hours, then use a scraper to remove the softened silicone,” she says. “Clean the surface with turps, spray with Selleys Rapid Mould Killer and apply a new wet area silicone sealant, following the instructions. Using the right sealant will help stop mouldy spots returning.” bunnings.com.au |

Scrub a dub dub When the fatty acids in soap interact with the mineral ions in hard water, you end up with soap scum, which needs more than your average multipurpose spray to remove. The secret is bicarb (bicarbonate of soda), which you can either sprinkle on a damp cloth or, for tougher scum build-up, mix with white vinegar and apply as a paste. Let it sit on the stain and then scrub – the acidity in the vinegar will help to break down the scum.

Beautify your bathroom

Grout result Keeping grout looking fresh maintains your bathroom’s good looks. Choose a grout cleaner that not only covers and whitens stains but also contains fungicide to help prevent mould re-growth, like Selleys 3 in 1 grout stain whitener. If your grout is beyond redemption, replacing it entirely is an achievable, if laborious, DIY job. Apply a good quality grout sealer afterwards, or choose an easy-clean epoxy grout, to make it less effort to maintain in the long run. Visit the Bunnings website for tips on cleaning, removing, applying and sealing grout. }

Protect yourself from UV rays and biting insects at the same time with combination sunscreen and insect repellent. When evening rolls around, keep the pests at bay by hanging a rechargeable bug zapper to lure and exterminate mozzies. Some units include a built-in solar panel as well as a USB recharging port. Be prepared by packing a first-aid kit. Choose one designed specifically for camping, which includes items such as an emergency blanket and waterproof matches. }

An army marches on its stomach and you’ll need good food to fuel your adventures. Start the day by cooking up a hearty camp breakfast on a single-burner butane stove. For extra value, choose one that includes an inset non-stick pan, and bring along a set of barbie utensils to complete your outdoor kitchen. If you have more troops to feed, choose a dual-burner stove.

Staying properly hydrated is a must, so keep a plentiful supply of drinking water easily accessible in a collapsible container with a built-in tap. To store your food safely, invest in a travel fridge. The Companion ‘Transit’ 40L fridge/freezer can run off a 12/24V battery or 240V mains power to keep food and drinks cool for your whole holiday.

Shed some light

When the sun goes down, you’re going to need lanterns for ambient lighting and torches for task lighting. “The Coleman ‘Divide Plus’ packaway lantern is an ideal companion on a camping trip,” says Mal Jasper, national account manager for Coleman. As well as having four operating modes, this lantern is designed to make packing Tetris easier by collapsing down to 160mm high. Head torches are mounted on a headband, which is useful because they direct light towards whatever you’re facing, while leaving both your hands free.

You don’t have to settle for your tent having a dirt floor. Stretch out a tarpaulin to provide a clean, waterproof surface underfoot, and pin it down with tent pegs. A camping mat is another great option, with a cushiony surface and an open weave to help protect the grass underneath. Tarps can easily sail away in a strong gust, so to provide shade, a gazebo designed to withstand sun and wind is a good option. “Coleman’s ‘Heatshield’ 3m x 3m gazebo has a special black liner to the inner side of the canopy,” says Mal. “It’s designed to block 98 per cent of UV rays.”

Stay in power Want to use 240V devices off the grid? It’s easy with a DC-AC inverter, which supplies mains-voltage current from a DC source such as a car battery. The Projecta 900W pure sine wave inverter is a good choice for appliances that have an electric motor; for less sensitive items, a cheaper modified sine wave model is also suitable. If you have a lot of 12V accessories in constant use, connect these to a secondary battery instead of the one that starts your car. Store this in a Projecta 12V ‘Portable Power Station’, which has a lighter socket, hold-down strap and a battery level indicator. “We recommend that a 12V battery of size N70 should be used in the Portable Power Station,” says Adam Birdseye, marketing officer for Projecta.

Keep the battery topped up using a folding solar panel. “Without a solar controller to regulate the power coming from your solar panels, it could ultimately damage your battery through excessive charge,” says Adam. “Both soft-folding and rigid bi-fold solar panel kits from Projecta feature built-in solar controllers, making them very easy to set up. Simply connect the clamps to your battery (or 12V fridge) and away you go.” Guard against the hassle of being stranded in the middle of nowhere if your car battery does go flat with a portable jump-starter. The Projecta ‘Lithium Start’ is small enough to keep in the car. ◆

Fix it Bright lights

Light fantastic Brighten up your life like never before with energy-efficient, long-lasting LED technology

L

EDs (light-emitting diodes) have been around since the 60s, but it wasn’t until the invention of high-brightness LEDs about 25 years ago that this technology started to become a viable alternative for other forms of lighting. Now we wouldn’t be without them – they’ve trimmed our power bills and given us unprecedented control over how we light our spaces. But how do you choose the right LED for you? Bright spots The advantages of LEDs include their high efficiency and longevity; a 12W LED can be almost as bright as a 100W incandescent bulb. “LEDs have an operational lifespan of five to 10 times that of an incandescent globe,” says Jane

Troiano of Arlec. LEDs have an estimated energy efficiency of 80 to 90 per cent compared to incandescent lighting, which means, as Jane explains, “Only 10 to 20 per cent of the electrical energy used is lost and converted into other forms of energy such as heat.” As they also emit close to no UV emissions, LEDs are perfectly suited to illuminating heat- or UV-sensitive items such as art. The smarter option Even relatively simple LED bulbs include onboard electronics for power management, and they come in an amazing variety of shapes and sizes. This means most ordinary globes and standard 120cm fluorescent tubes can be replaced very easily, by swapping them for LEDs of similar dimensions. }

Warm white light works well in relaxed living areas

Cracking the code What does all the weird jargon on the packaging mean?  Beam angle: Measured in degrees, a higher number means the light is spread over a wider area.  Colour temperature (kelvins): How ‘warm’ or ‘cold’ the light appears. Warm white is around the 3000K mark, while the cooler white of daylight tones is about 5500-6500K.  Dimmable: Whether the bulb can be used with a conventional electric light dimmer.  Equivalent power: This describes the LED’s brightness by comparing it with the power of an incandescent bulb.

Brilliant Halo G125 spiral amber flex LED BC globe, $29.95, I/N: 0013907

 Hg: Whether the bulb contains any mercury, a poisonous metal.  Lumen: The brightness of light produced. A 100W incandescent bulb emits about 1500-1600lm.  t(h): The bulb’s minimum life expectancy in hours (usually at least 15,000).  Switching cycles: How many times you can turn the bulb on and off before it starts to wear out.  Wattage: How much power the bulb actually uses. LEDs used for overhead lighting are typically in the range of 4W-12W, while halogen downlights tend to be 20W-50W.

Check with a licensed electrician to see if your globes can simply be replaced, or whether you’ll need all new fittings and wiring. Many LEDs offer advanced features. Smart LED lights controlled by wi-fi networking give you the option of integrated dimming without rewiring light switches. “Philips ‘Hue’ lights use the latest in wireless technology to control dimming,” explains Duane Shore, Pacific channel marketing manager for Philips Lighting. “You can control them via the Hue smartphone app or voice control with Google voice assistant. You can even set lights to dim on a schedule that mimics your presence when you’re not at home.” Arlec’s latest innovation incorporating LED technology

When to call in a pro No matter how smart LEDs can be, you still need an electrician in some cases. “If you have an older home, say pre-90s, the drivers and transformers for halogen downlights might be delivering more power to the LED than is necessary,” says Duane. “Safety is the greatest concern, so get a qualified electrician to check driver compatibility.”

Living colour To match the light output of an incandescent bulb or halogen downlight, choose an LED of the same size and shape, with a brightness equivalent to the wattage of the original bulb. This parameter is prominently featured on the packaging. A basic guide for LED colour selection for ambient lighting is based on the kelvins (K) or colour temperature of the LED. “Warm white (2700K) is traditionally cosy and best for bedrooms and living rooms, while cool white (4100K) has a more energetic feel and is suited to kitchens, garages or outdoor living spaces,” says Jane. Choose daylight (50006000K) for bathrooms, studies or craft areas, as it provides the most contrast among colours and is great for more intricate projects or for applying makeup. ¿

imple and elegant, this DIY timber tree is a perfect festive centrepiece. Made using two thicknesses of dowel, it’s a straightforward project if you have a drill press. If not, clamp the dowel before drilling to make sure the holes are straight.

Safety equipment   Measuring tape and pencil  Mitre saw  Drill press  10mm dowel drill bit Sanding block with 180-grit  abrasive paper  Two quick-grip clamps  28mm speedbor spade drill bit Drill with 8G combination  countersinking bit  Rubber mallet 2.4m length of 28.6mm

diameter clear pine dowel Timber adhesive   Drill press jig made from timber offcuts (we used 12mm moulding and 600mm length of 140mm-wide pine) 10 1.2m lengths of 9mm diameter clear pine dowel  1.2m length of 89mm x 19mm premium dressed pine Four 8G x 30mm countersunk  timber screws  One 8G x 60mm countersunk timber screw

1

2

3

Make a drill press jig by gluing two lengths of 12mm moulding to a length of pine to hold the dowel while drilling, then set up a drill press with 10mm dowel drill bit. Working down one line at a time, make the holes, drilling through the dowel at each mark. Use 180-grit paper to smooth the holes and remove the lines. Tip: If you don’t have a drill press, use a drill with the same jig, clamping the dowel before drilling to ensure straight holes.

4

5

6

7

8

To make the centre of the tree, measure and mark the 28.6mm-diameter dowel to 1300mm, cutting with a mitre saw. Draw a six-pointed star on the endgrain then, from every second point of the star, mark lines down the side using an offcut as a straight edge. Tip: You should have three lines to indicate the staggered setout of the branches.

To make the base of the dowel tree, on the 89mm x 19mm premium dressed pine, measure and mark out two crossbars 360mm long and two feet 120mm long, cutting with a mitre saw. Mark the centre of the crossbars by measuring widthways and lengthways.

bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

From the top of the dowel, measure along one line, marking 80mm from the end, then measure and mark eight 120mm intervals to make nine marks. On the next line, measure 120mm from the top, then measure and mark eight 120mm intervals to make nine marks. On the remaining line, measure 160mm from the top, then measure and mark eight 120mm intervals to make nine marks.

Set up a drill press with a 28mm speedbor spade drill bit, then clamp a crossbar to drill through the centre to form the top. Remove then clamp the remaining crossbar, drilling just halfway through to form the base that supports the centre dowel of the tree. Sand inside the holes to widen them slightly.

bunningsau

On the 120mm lengths, use a countersinking bit to drill two holes, then position the pieces flush at either end of the top crossbar, securing with 30mm screws. Centre this top crossbar across the base crossbar, with feet facing down and centre holes in line. Check the centre dowel fits in the holes and smooth base with abrasive paper if needed.

On the lengths of 9mm dowel, measure and mark out the branches, with three lengths each at 760mm, 690mm, 600mm, 520mm, 440mm, 360mm, 280mm, 200mm and 120mm, cutting with a mitre saw. Tip: You should have 27 branches, with three of each length. Cut the longest pieces first then use offcuts for the shorter ones. Smooth the ends with abrasive paper.

Dab adhesive onto the half-hole in the base crossbar, tap in the centre dowel piece using a mallet and secure from underneath with a 60mm screw. Thread the dowel branches into the holes of the centre piece, starting at the base with the long pieces, working up.

Plant pick

Christmas cheer While you’re decking the halls, use pretty plants to give your garden some festive colour Poinsettia Fiery red bracts (modified leaves) around small white flowers sit above deep green foliage. Grow outdoors in warm climates or indoors in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight. Once the red leaves have fallen, prune back to 20cm stems and feed with a slow-release fertiliser. As the leaves and seeds are poisonous and the sap is an irritant, keep it out of littlies’ reach. Conifers Living Christmas trees are a magical alternative to cut ones. Use very small conifers as table decorations, or bring larger potted trees into the house or patio, moving them back outside after Christmas. Choose a dwarf species or keep larger conifers confined to pots, as some can grow too big for the average backyard.

Poinsettia

‘Christmas Star’ spruce

(Euphorbia pulcherrima)

(Picea glauca ‘Christmas Star’)

Nurseries coax this winter bloomer into flowering at the end of the year for its classic Yuletide colour.

This sweet dwarf spruce has dense foliage and a beautifully conical Christmas tree shape.

Petunia

Woolly bush

(Petunia x hybrida)

(Adenanthos sericeus)

These flowers are easy to grow with long-lasting blooms. Choose red and white for a festive display.

Plant up as an ‘Aussie’ Christmas tree in a large container and position in full sun or part shade.

Woolly bush This native shrub has soft, silvery foliage that, during summer, is adorned with red-orange flowers like glowing Christmas lights. It grows best in areas with hot, dry summers and is drought tolerant once established. Grow in the garden as a hedge, informal border or in pots. In spring, feed with slow-release native fertiliser. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants
