CALLING ALL WANNABE BEEKEEPERS!

Welcome!

A

nyone who’s tried selecting a paint colour for their room will know that even white has many tones, from a hint of black to warm, buttery cream, making it a tricky process. But there is a way to find your perfect shade. First, make a moodboard from pictures in magazines, social media and so on, to identify a few favourite shades. Then paint each one on a large piece of white card,

observing your swatches for a few days in different areas of the room and at different times of the day, to find the one you like best. There you go! However, if you want a shortcut, just have a look at our inspiring room sets, starting on page 17, where we’re sharing feature walls around four striking colours.

Enjoy the issue!

Now is a great time to get your trees and shrubs in the ground. Always improve the soil with organic matter or

compost 2 prior to planting. Add gypsum to heavy and poor draining soil. Struggled in the past with coriander ‘bolting’ (going to seed) too soon? Try again in April! In a sunny spot, sow seeds in pots or beds and water well. For more on growing coriander, see page 74. 3

PEAS

Whether eaten raw and sweet from the vine or tossed into stir-fries, a worthy addition to your vegie patch.

SPINACH

The stalwart of salads, sandwiches and smoothies. Sow seeds every few weeks for a successive crop.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

5

Want to grow indoor plants, but don’t have enough light? Use an indoor grow lamp. It’s stylish and perfect for a desk or side table.

RADISH

A quick-growing salad favourite that’s ready to pick in 4-6 weeks. The leaves can be used for pesto, too.

BROCCOLI

A versatile and useful veg for the kitchen garden. All parts – heads, stems and leaves – can be cooked and consumed.

Put kitchen scraps to good use by 1 installing a worm farm. As they cycle through the food, the worms produce nutrient-rich castings and ‘worm tea’ that can be used for the garden and indoor plants.

THE GREAT ONES ARE READY TO GRILL ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

Tempo 1 Burner Portable BBQ I/N: 0256470

$

The best get togethers happen wherever you want them to. And the great ones do their thing on a Matador. Discover all the signs of a great barbecue and check out the Matador range at matadorbbqs.com.au

Advertising promotion Matador ‘Tempo’ single-burner barbecue, $249, I/N: 0256470

Moving feast Take your picnic to the next level with Matador’s portable barbecue and accessories

U

pgrade from soggy sandwiches and make this the season of epic picnics with a portable barbecue from Matador.

GOURMET ON THE GO The Matador ‘Tempo’ one-burner barbecue (also available in two- and three-burner) delivers all the extras of a bigger model: in-built hood thermometer for controlled cooking, easily removable grease tray and cast iron grill plates for quick cleaning, plus the ease and convenience of gas-powered cooking. But the best feature, of course, is its portability. At just 12kg, the singleburner Tempo is small and lightweight enough to carry on your next picnic or camping trip. Just pop it in its convenient carry bag, and off you go! Optional quick-release legs can be easily snapped into place to elevate the barbecue for safe and convenient cooking, at home or away.

POP IT ON THE PATIO The Matador Tempo is just as handy at home so, if you’re using it all the time, why not give it a permanent set up? The optional patio stand securely places the Tempo on a sleek pedestal, complete with a tray for holding barbecue tools and a front panel to hide the gas bottle out of sight.

CHEF’S TOOLS A pair of long tongs and a wide spatula are the barbecue master’s core tools; Matador’s BBQ tool set upgrades these with a non-stick coating. TAKE YOUR GARDEN TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH A HEDGE THAT’S JUST RIGHT FOR YOUR SPACE

O

ne of the best ways to create privacy and define outdoor zones is with a hedge. Tall, short or in-between, it can lend itself to any style. Autumn is a good time to plant one; the air is cooler, but the soil is warm, giving plants time to settle in before winter.

A formal hedge, such as English box, can be clipped to create living walls that define and enclose ‘rooms’ within a garden

Handy to have

There are plenty of benefits to having a hedge, says Katy Schreuder, Bunnings Greenlife buyer. “A hedge can be home to wildlife,” she says. “It can also provide cool shelter during hot weather and act as a windbreak.” Plus, it’s a versatile design element, says landscape designer Jason Hodges of Buxus Balls of Berry (@jasonhodgesandco). “It can line a path, create boundaries, reinforce a garden’s design, provide a sense of security or disguise an unsightly view,” he says. But be careful with your plant choice. “The height will ultimately impact the overall look and feel – a towering conifer will make a small space feel even smaller – so choosing the right plant is important.”

Plant possibilities

Not all plants are suitable for hedging. Of those that are, check the plant label for more information. “It will specify the height and width of the plant, as well as its suitability,” explains Katy.

“The first few prunes will benefit from a stringline for use as a guide, but over time, you can lose the stringline and go by eye” Consider the style you’d like. Formal hedges require plants with a dense growth habit that tolerate regular pruning, like buxus, abelia or Acmena and Syzygium species of lilly pilly. Informal hedges are more relaxed, imparting a softer structure. They also need less maintenance – try azalea, callistemon or weeping lilly pilly. While many hedging plants are shades of green, some offer more drama with new foliage coloured red, pink or 28 bunnings.com.au |

bronze before maturing to green. There are silverleaved options, too; “Coastal rosemary, teucrium or licorice plant provide interesting texture and colour,” says Jason. You can also use flowering and/or edible plants. Camellia, loropetalum, feijoa, rosemary, bay tree and native midyim berry are all great choices.

RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE

Screen it off For privacy and protection from weather, look for tall, dense, fastgrowing plants. “But check how big it will grow and how much maintenance is required,” says Katy. Top picks: sweet viburnum (above), Acmena ‘Goodbye Neighbours’, Photinia ‘Red Robin’, Syzygium ‘Backyard Bliss’.

Vary your choice of plants for differing foliage forms and colour, such as bronzetinged photinia and glossy-leafed murraya

Grow low Low hedges can border paths, define beds or add greenery to retaining walls. Try a stepped or double hedge, where a small hedge is planted in front of a tall one. Top picks: Pittosporum ‘Golf Ball’ (above), Japanese box, germander.

Unconventional candidates They may not be seen as go-to hedge options, but with the right maintenance, these plants can grow into lovely lush specimens. Top picks: native oregano (above, also known as round-leaf mint bush), blueberry, metrosideros (New Zealand Christmas bush).

Informal affair If you prefer a more relaxed look (along with less maintenance), try plants with a loose, ‘weeping’ habit. They can have flowers, too. Top picks: weeping lilly pilly (above), grevillea, plumbago.

Set boundaries “A hedge adds a softer touch to the garden than a fence,” says Katy. Use it to hide an unsightly fence or define a boundary. If not needed for screening, look for medium-size plants, between 2-3m. Top picks: murraya (above), Pittosporum ‘Miss Muffet’.

“Pruning lightly and often is far better than pruning once a year”

SHOP 1

2

Jason Hodges, landscape designer

Growing tips

When planting a hedge, spacing is important; too close and plants will compete for water and nutrients, but too far apart and the hedge will be sparse. To calculate the optimum distance between plants, divide the final height of the hedge by three. Dig a hole at each interval, ensure the soil is well draining, and add organic matter before planting. For a lush, thick hedge, Jason recommends a regular haircut. “Do not let it reach its final height before you start trimming,” he says. “Lightly prune a few times throughout the year – from September through to March – to encourage new bushy growth.” Failure to do this can result in bare patches, especially in the lower parts of the hedge. If you do have bare patches, don’t leave them unattended. “Tip-prune these areas to stimulate growth,” advises Jason. Also, feed regularly with an organic liquid fertiliser to boost growth and improve the overall health of the hedge. For pruning, Jason suggests using battery-operated tools. “They’re easier to use and less physically demanding,” he says. However, if trimming largeleaved plants, it pays to tidy up afterwards with shears and secateurs. “Don’t leave torn leaves, as this can be stressful for the hedge and also make it look untidy,” says Jason.

Horticulturist Melissa King tells us her top tips on successfully growing potted citrus

Oranges and lemons…

Learn how to grow citrus in pots, with these tips from horticulturist Melissa King

Y

ou don’t need a big backyard to enjoy zesty citrus straight from the tree. Today’s pint-sized trees are perfect for pots and help bring a Mediterranean look and feel to your patio or balcony.

SUN SEEKERS Citrus trees like to bask in the sun, so pick the sunniest spot on your patio or balcony and make a feature of them in large decorative pots, filled with Scotts Osmocote Citrus & Fruit Premium Potting Mix, which has been specifically formulated to bring out the best in your citrus trees. Boosted with iron, magnesium and calcium, this mix ensures your plants produce lush, deep green leaves all year long.

TREE NEEDS Choose a pot that is at least 45-55cm wide and deep to allow for good root depth, and check it has an adequate number of drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. Pick traditional terracotta for a classic, timeless look, or add colour with brightly glazed containers. It’s a good idea to position each pot in its final spot before filling it with potting mix, but if you’re planning on moving it around, keep a look out for lightweight containers. Plant your citrus tree so that it’s at the same depth as it was in the original container.

REGULAR FEEDING Citrus are hungry plants and, as experienced citrus growers will tell you, plants – especially ones grown in pots – need to be fed regularly to replace lost nutrients. Add Scotts Osmocote Controlled Release Fertiliser for Citrus & Fruit when planting, and again each season. Controlled release fertiliser ensures that your citrus is only fed when it needs it most, with nutrients released when the soil moisture and temperature is optimal. Water your newly potted citrus thoroughly after planting, at least twice a week, even daily in very hot weather. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

TOP POTTERS Compact citrus trees are tailor made for pots and have the same wonderful attributes as full-sized citrus: lush green foliage, scented flowers and flavoursome fruit. Here are our top picks: nG rowing to just 1.5 metres tall, dwarf lemons like ‘Lots a Lemons’ and ‘Lemonicious’ are perfect for pots, and are prolific fruiters. nP lant the dwarf lime ‘Sublime’ and harvest full sized limes all season long. nA great space saver is the double-grafted ‘Citrus Splitzers’. Perfect for large pots, they combine two fruits in one tree, including lemon and lime, or orange and lime. nM andarins, cumquats and calamondins also make productive potted plants.

1 Scotts Osmocote ‘Plus Organics’ citrus & fruit plant food and soil improver, $16.25/1.5kg, I/N: 2961131. 2 Scotts Osmocote citrus & fruit controlled release fertiliser, $7.57/500g, I/N: 2961295. 3 Scotts Osmocote citrus & fruit premium potting mix, $12.57/25L, I/N: 2961638.

Creative lighting can bring a touch of magic to the garden after dark

Photography (above) Gap Photos/Joanna Kossak. †Available to order online or at the Special Orders Desk.

Plan for success

Start by sketching an outdoor lighting plan, recommends Matt Wichmann of Holman Industries. “Note architectural and landscape features you want to highlight, dark corners that need brightening, as well as entries, pathways and steps that need to be illuminated for safety and security,” he says. The next decision, says Sharon Breeze of Brilliant Lighting, is colour. “The good news is many coloured lights also operate in white, so you can alternate between both,” she says. Hardwired lighting, such as pendants and wall lights, will need to be installed by a qualified electrician, whereas solar-powered and plug-in cable lights are a simple DIY job.

Shine on

For a barbecue zone, install a task light above or either side of your cooking area – consider shadows cast by the barbecue hood or the chef when positioning lights. “It can be a good idea to set these task lights to a separate switch, as you probably only want them on

when you’re cooking,” suggests Sharon. Good lighting – although not as bright – is also an asset over a dining table; choose pendants that are suitable for outdoor use undercover. “For any lights not undercover, look for exterior lights with a high ingress protection (IP) rating of 44 – this means it’s designed to resist water splashing from all directions,” says Sharon. “IP65 is even better, as this is fully dust-tight and can resist water jets from any angle.”

Light the way

Use outdoor lighting to enhance safety, prioritising paths, steps and other potential slip or trip hazards. “Sleek, bollard-style path lights can help create secure passageways, illuminate garden bed edging and create a statement entrance,” says Matt. Deck lights, which sit flush, are an unobtrusive option for timber steps and decks. “Avoid runway-style illumination, which can be blinding,” adds Matt. “Instead choose a warm white output and carefully space fixtures to provide gentle illumination along key paths and walkways.” bunnings.com.au |

GET SMART

Safe and sound

A well-lit exterior, with a combination of sensor and automated lights, provides peace of mind and is handy when arriving home at night. A security floodlight with a 10-metre sensor range is ideal above garage doors and carports. “For areas where you need a sensor light but prefer a DIY option, consider solar,” says Sharon Breeze. “Look for strong light output of 600 lumens or more, a long cable to the panel, an IP44 or higher and a minimum two-year warranty.” Another option is to have an electrician to install motion sensors to work with new or existing outdoor lighting, adds Sharon. “For easy home automation, choose a PIR [passive infrared] smart sensor,” she says. “Smart sensors can also activate your garden lighting to come on via your home’s wi-fi, which you control via an app.”

In the mood

Soft, subtle lighting can change the ambience of your outdoor area. In entertaining zones,

3

strategically placed pendants add style, a simple string of festoon lights provides a twinkling party atmosphere, while “wall washing” with a statement sconce can create visual depth and drama, says Matt. To control illumination to suit the occasion, consider smart lighting or smart light globes, or have a dimmer switch fitted. Dotting sections of the garden with LED light spikes will also extend your view at night, whether you’re inside or out.

Full focus

Spotlights allow you to get creative with different effects, like uplighting focal trees, highlighting a water feature or silhouetting a sculptural outdoor element. “This is a great way to add layers of texture and depth to your backyard – just ensure you don’t overdo it,” says Matt. “You need to balance light and dark for it to be effective, and be mindful where lights are directed so they don’t disturb neighbours. It’s also a good idea to set them to turn off at a reasonable time.”

e s a c t u h s & n e p O ENTER THE WORLD OF DOORS, WHERE YOUR CHOICE OF PROFILE AND HARDWARE CAN SET THE STYLE SCENE FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME Words MONIQUE BUTTERWORTH

D

oors – both external and internal – can establish your home’s tone and architectural style. From the street-side statement of the front door to the continuity of matching internal doors, your selection of profiles and hardware are essential design elements.

Judging panel

Plain flush panel doors have a sleek look that sits well in minimalist, contemporary homes, while classic panel doors suit heritage homes. Shaker-style panel doors work in both modern and traditional homes, from Hamptons or coastal to Scandi style. Vertical panel ones can add character to a contemporary build and look wonderful in a country style or coastal home. Glazed versions may be modern or traditional in style, and are ideal for borrowing light from bright areas to enhance the light levels in adjacent dark rooms.

DOOR OPTIONS

Get a handle on it

Lockwood’s Malila Gabuardi says selecting handles, knobs, rails and hinges is as important as choosing the doors. “Round tubular profiles are classic, square profiles suit a contemporary feel, and a flat lever style with rounded edges suits almost any application,” she says. Look to other fittings like taps, towel rails and drawer pulls for a cohesive flow. “A brushed satin chrome finish will stand the test of time,” says Malila. “Consider bright chrome for period homes, matt black is bold and modern, while warm satin brass is on trend and enhances natural timber.” Hume ‘Accent’ 2040mm x 820mm x 35mm HA5 primed MDF internal door, $80, I/N: 1971013. Specialty doors

There’s no need to restrict your choice to single swing doors – other options can add character or even help to resolve an awkward layout. Sliding doors are great for small areas where there is inadequate room for a hinged door – pocket doors slide seamlessly into a wall, while barn doors are an easy-to-install alternative to a cavity slider. Barn doors only require adequate wall space to slide over when opened, and can be single, double or up to four doors for larger openings. Bi-folds are a series of ‘concertina’ panels that stack to one or both sides of the door frame. They are good for large openings or to hide functional areas like a laundry, butler’s pantry, wardrobe or study zone.

Choosing colour

ABOVE A plain door was clad in Easycraft VJ-look panelling to emulate a traditional barn door, then painted in Dulux Flooded Gum

“Door handles bridge a physical connection to the residence and form part of its character” Malila Gabuardi, Lockwood

As well as profile, colour is a major mood-setting element for your front door. “Some traditional-home owners prefer to keep to heritage colours, however many select others that still work with their home’s beautiful features,” says Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. “We are seeing some deep and dark colours such as Dulux Domino or Black Caviar on contemporary or modern homes, and lovely mid-tone greens and blues on mid-century modern homes as well as Hamptons.” If you want your front door to be a focal point, select a hue that works alongside your home’s weatherboard, render or brick. Also consider your architraves – these can be kept the same or used as a strong contrast.

What’s on the inside

For internal door colour, most people go with the same white as their architraves and skirting boards. However, there is life beyond white interior doors, says Andrea. “Even if you wanted to use a warm neutral such as Dulux Feather Soft or Winter Terrace, or a greige such as Dulux Milton Moon or Terrace White just to add subtle variation, you would still have to work with the undertone of any white selected on trims and architraves,” she advises. Natural timber doors add warmth, character and luxurious interest – accentuate the grain of the timber with clear or stained finishes.  bunnings.com.au |

With a smart lock, you never have to worry about losing your key or locking yourself out of the house. You can operate them with your smartphone, smart watch, tap cards, pin code or – if you must! – mechanical keys. Not just a cool gadget, there are practical benefits to smart locks, too. You can allow a friend to enter your home when you’re not there, or create permanent or temporary entry codes for tradies, cleaners or dog walkers. You can also set access boundaries for each entry code, such as specific days and hours to ensure access to your home is limited to approved times. “Imagine your friend waiting outside your door while you’re 4 at work,” says Sanjay Tendulkar of Yale. “With a Yale smart lock, you can generate the temporary access code for your friend via the mobile app. Also, this app will remind you to lock your door, plus provide the locked door status and operation log too, keeping your home secure.” You can connect Yale smart locks with a variety of smart home platforms, adds Sanjay, such as Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

EXTERIOR MAKEOVER

Best face forward

PAINTING THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME IS A BIG JOB, YET IT CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING DIY PROJECTS

T

hough often put off, there’s no escaping the fact that your home’s exterior will eventually need to be repainted. Faded, flaking, stained or weatherdamaged paint might be the trigger for the task, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to give the exterior a complete refresh and enjoy a colour change – exactly like this two-storey Queensland home. Thorough preparation is essential to a great paint job, so get armed and ready with our step-by-step guide.

Assess your exterior

Your home’s exterior materials and construction will determine the equipment needed and how you’ll approach the job. Start by assessing the different features and consider whether you’ll use different colours and stains to accent eaves, window frames, or timber elements. Decide if you’ll paint downpipes. You will need a brush and roller, with a paint pot plus roller cover and tray for each colour. Next, plan how you’ll stage the painting. Identify natural joins or corners where you can section the house, and tackle one defined area at a time. To work out how much paint is required, go to the online paint calculator (under D.I.Y. Advice). Use a tape measure to work out the width and height of each section. You will also need to determine accessibility and whether you can reach all wall sections and eaves you plan to paint. For a highset home, you may need scaffolding, which you can erect and use without a work licence, if the top platform doesn’t exceed 4m in height. For lowset homes, an adjustable work platform can provide good access and is easily relocatable. Check if there’s rotting or damaged trim, rusting fixtures or any missing features. These should be repaired or replaced prior to painting. Cracks and gaps may have appeared around windows and doors over time, and these may need to be sealed. Also look for powdery or flaking paint and varnishes, mould or oil-based stains which may need special treatment.

1 Create access

Comfortable, clear and safe access to all painting surfaces will minimise work time and make the job much easier. Move outdoor furniture, pot plants and the barbecue. Clear or tie back any plants or trees that are in the way. Erect required scaffolding, ladders or work platforms.

2 Wash walls

All exterior elements to be painted need to be washed first. The easiest way is to spray surfaces with an exterior house cleaner, followed by a wash with a pressure cleaner, but avoid holding it too close to the wall or timber features, as it can gouge softer materials. Start on a low setting and test in an inconspicuous spot first.

Painting the roof is a task best left to the professionals

Repair surfaces

Fill gaps

Stain Wash walls

South-facing and shaded walls can be susceptible to mould and mildew. Treat with an exterior mould cleaner. Scrubs marks that create a bumpy surface with a stiff broom or nonscratch scourer. Allow time for all elements to dry out thoroughly.

3 Repair surfaces

Repair or replace trim and mouldings that may be damaged, rotting or have rusty fixings. This is typical on joins in fibre cement sheeting, or around windows and doors. Replace rusty fittings, such as down-pipe brackets, or at least treat with a rust converter which can be painted over, as rust that is not directly treated will continue to corrode. bunnings.com.au |

Quickly move to the next section to maintain a wet edge, continuing towards a natural break in the wall. On rendered walls, where it’s not possible to roll before cutting-in dries, feather the edges to prevent a visible line. Seal brushes with plastic wrap between use.

Cut in around trim

9 Finish up

Use a scraper to remove flaking paint, then lightly sand to reduce the visible edges when painted over. Assess whether a gap is intentional for ventilation or drainage before using a gap filler on joins that may have separated. This will give the painted house a more seamless look.

4 Prep

Remove any exterior fixtures you don’t want painted, such as house numbers, hose holders and ornaments. Non-removable external fixtures, such as switches, lights and meter boxes, can be covered with plastic and taped. Remember to remove light bulbs before covering and don’t seal vents on hot water systems. Cover paths, decks, handrails and stairs with drop sheets, taping down the edges. Plastic drop sheets can be cut to size to cover awkward spaces.

5 Oil

Consider the order of application to downsize any spill damage. Oil timber features first, letting them dry before masking around the edges to apply undercoat on walls or paint trims. Leave accidental drips on oiled surfaces to dry before scraping off, sanding and touching up with oil.

Keep in mind... Always use the right ladder for the job, make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (eg both feet and one hand) on it at all times and make sure another person is nearby in case you need assistance. n Be aware houses built before 1990 may contain asbestos, and take care when removing old paint as it could contain traces of lead. For more info, visit bunnings.com.au/health-and-safety. n Check the weather forecast: if rain is imminent, delay exterior painting, and avoid painting in very hot or cold conditions. Plan to paint when it’s cool and shady, as paint may dry too quickly in direct sunlight, leaving brush marks and an uneven finish. n

Tape up

6Undercoat

The undercoat is usually a multipurpose paint, which primes and seals, to allow the topcoat to stick to the surface and resist problems such as stains or mould coming through. Typically, a previously painted surface in good condition won’t need an undercoat. If the surface hasn’t been painted before, or is particularly glossy, such as downpipes, or porous, such as rough-sawn timber, then a suitable multi-step undercoat should be used. Also consider using an undercoat to help transition from a previously painted dark colour to a light colour, or when unifying previously contrasting colours with a new colour. Ask at the paint desk in store to help determine the best product to suit your needs.

Before removing ladders or scaffolding, view the paintwork from different angles for accidental drips or marks that need touching up. Remove tape by holding it at 45° and slowly peeling away, using a utility knife to slice along bridging that can occur when thick paint dries over the edge. Take up drop sheets, replace exterior fixtures and furniture – and you’re done!

There’s nothing like a colour change to give your home a fresh new feel!

7 Trim and doors

High-use areas, such as windows, doors and handrails, benefit from a semi-gloss finish. This gives a tougher, slicker surface that reduces scratches and marks, and helps with cleaning. It’s also a nice contrast from surrounding walls, usually painted in low sheen. Use quality painter’s tape on aluminium frames for a sharp line between window and trim.

8 Topcoat

Plan to apply at least two topcoats. Use an angle brush to ‘cut in’ around windows and doors as far as can be reached before rolling.

Enliven your decor with a new display area. If you’re drilling into a masonry wall, use a drill with hammer mode, says Scott Tinsley of Ryobi. “Drilling into brick or concrete requires dedicated masonry bits that include a tungsten-carbide tip (TCT).” If your shelf brackets do not come with screws and wall plugs, 8g x 30mm screws will be suitable for average loads (up to 10 kilograms in masonry). “Each colour of wall plug is matched to a specific drill bit diameter and gauge of screw, which is listed on the packaging of the plugs,” says Scott. Match the plug to the screw and the drill bit to the plug, then use a spirit level to help you mark screw positions on the wall. In plasterboard walls, you can either use a stud finder to locate the studs and screw the shelf brackets into them, or attach brackets directly to the cladding using plasterboard anchors. There are several varieties, so check the packaging for the weight the anchors can safely hold. Bosch ‘Universal Detect’ wall scanner, $139, I/N: 0028288

Create a wonderful wall

Add visual drama by painting a feature wall. Start with a sample pot in your chosen colour and use it to paint a large sheet of white card. Once it’s dry, hold it up against the wall you’re planning to paint and see how the colour looks in your home’s lighting. When you’re happy with your choice, mask off around the perimeter of the wall using low-tack masking tape. Cut in around the edges with a 50-65mm paintbrush, then paint the rest of the wall using a roller.

Deal with timber scratches

If furniture has scuffed a solid timber or engineered floating floor, try wiping the scuff marks gently with a melamine foam eraser pad dipped in water. Alternatively, an ordinary pencil eraser may effectively rub away tracks left by furniture legs. Polish the area with a microfibre cloth. If this cleaning process reveals scratches in the floor’s finish, rub a purposedesigned wax touch-up crayon tinted to the same colour as your timber floor into the scratch and buff away any excess.

Get a door to adore

Repainting a front door is easiest if you take it off its hinges, so choose a waterbased enamel for faster drying time and a day when rain is not forecast. Mask off any windows and sand the door lightly using fine 180-grit abrasive paper and a sanding sponge for any decorative features such as panelling. Wipe away the dust then use a mini roller to apply 2-3 coats of enamel paint. To rehang the door, raise it to hinge height on chocks or scraps of plywood, and ask a helper to hold it steady while you screw the hinges in.

Closing up skirting board gaps helps keep out both cold air and crawling insects

6 Seal unsightly gaps

A gap between your skirting and the wall can let through draughts or become a haven for allergens. Fit a tube of flexible multipurpose gap filler to a caulking gun, trim off the end of the nozzle at 45°, and squeeze the filler into the gap, pushing it forwards ‘ahead’ of the nozzle rather than ‘dragging’ the caulking gun. Then wet your finger in water and use it to smooth away any excess filler.

While you’ve got the caulking gun out, why not replace mouldy or peeling silicone behind your basin? Start by using a silicone scraper tool to extract as much of the old silicone as possible, and then apply silicone remover compound to break down the rest. Clean using methylated spirits. Put a tube of mould-resistant silicone in the caulking gun, trim the nozzle and squeeze the trigger evenly to push the silicone into the gap. Smooth away any excess with a wet finger. 

Plant up pots of colour

Create a movable display of flowering favourites, pot up fresh herbs or give growing plants some TLC by moving them into a bigger pot. Place your hand on top of the soil around the stem of the plant for support as you flip it upside down, and gently ease the pot free. For larger plants, lie the pot on its side instead. “If the root ball is only slightly tangled, just loosen the roots gently and clean up any dead or damaged roots,” advises horticulturist Melissa King from Northcote Pottery. “However, if the roots are a dense, circling mess, you may need to prune them a bit to open up the root ball. Repot the plant into a bigger container using a good quality potting mix, taking care to repot your plants at the same depth as they were in the original container.”

New curtains can transform the look of a room. Check whether you have a masonry or plasterboard wall. Then use a spirit level and ruler to mark bracket locations slightly above and to the side of the window, and mark screw hole locations by using a bracket as a template. For brick or concrete walls, use a drill with a hammer function plus a masonry bit, then tap in wall plugs and secure the brackets with 30mm x 8g screws. In plasterboard walls, use suitable anchors such as WallMates to attach the brackets. Position the curtain rod in the brackets, remove the finial from one end and slip on the curtain.

dangerous asbestos fibres into the air which can cause cancer.

HOW CAN IT BE DEALT WITH? It is not recommended that you handle or remove asbestos yourself. Even if you follow all the safety procedures to remove asbestos, it is easier, safer and often cheaper to engage a licensed asbestos professional who is fully trained, insured and equipped to prevent release of the deadly fibres. Know your limits – contact a licensed professional for advice.

Thinking of making improvements to your home? Was your house built before 1990?

I

f the answer is yes, it can contain asbestos. This is something you need to be aware of before you start doing any repairs or improvements to your home, even if all you want to do is drill into a wall to install a shelf. Asbestos was used in a wide range of building materials and other products prior to being phased out by 1990 and banned in 2003. It is still present in millions of homes and can be found anywhere inside or outside the home.

WHY IS ASBESTOS A PROBLEM? We all know asbestos causes cancer, but do you know how and when it becomes dangerous? When microscopic asbestos fibres are inhaled, they can cause diseases such as lung cancer, and other diseases which have no cure like mesothelioma

and asbestosis. All of these asbestosrelated diseases contribute to approximately 4000 deaths in Australia each year. You don’t need a lot of exposure to asbestos fibres to develop a fatal disease later in life. Without taking the right precautions, asbestos fibres can also contaminate your clothing and furnishings in your home, risking not only your own health, but that of your family.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO STAY SAFE? n One Know where it is. If in doubt,

get the material tested or assume it is asbestos. n Two Don’t disturb or damage it. n Three Replace it if damaged. If broken, weathered or damaged, fibres can be released, risking your health. n And finally, seek professional help to remove it. It could cost less than you think.

YOUR LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES We all have a duty not to harm those around us. This duty applies everywhere and to everyone. This means you must take all the necessary precautions to prevent or minimise exposure to asbestos fibres. It also means disposing of any asbestos material legally – and never putting it in your household bin.

DO’s AND DON’Ts You can stay safe if you know where asbestos is, and what to do. Do: n Always check if asbestos is present before you start doing any repairs or improvements. n Ask an asbestos professional for advice and have a sample tested, or assume the material contains asbestos and take the necessary precautions. n When carrying out small jobs, always take care to avoid disturbing or releasing asbestos fibres. n If the asbestos material is broken, weathered or if work is likely to disturb or damage the asbestos, seek professional help to remove it. It could cost less than you think. Don’t: n Do not use domestic vacuums, brooms or brushes to dry-sweep asbestos containing dust. n Do not use high-speed power tools to cut, grind, sand or drill asbestos materials. n Do not use high pressure water or compressed air to clean asbestos materials. SEASONAL PRUNING

A CUT ABOVE

SHARPEN THE SECATEURS! IT’S TIME TO HEAD INTO THE GARDEN TO GIVE IT AN AUTUMN TRIM Words TAMMY HUYNH

he secret to strong, healthy and productive plants is in the pruning – and a good trim can work wonders. Timing is important, though, especially if you live in a colder region, as you might have to delay pruning certain plants until frosts are finished. Take a moment to learn which plants are happy to have a haircut at this time of year, and which aren’t.

Better shape up

“Autumn is a good time to prune summer-flowering plants,” says horticulturist Chloe Thomson of Bean There Dug That (@beantheredugthat).

“Remove spent flowers and cut to shape growth.” Use this time to also cut back hedges, tidy up shrubs and open up the canopy of some fruiting trees and plants. Not all plants benefit from an autumn chop, says horticulturist and landscape designer Lyndall Keating of Garden Society (gardensociety. com.au). “Certain plants require certain seasons for pruning,” she says. “Never prune when flower or fruit buds are forming, unless it’s to save the plant from a pest or disease attack.” But there’s some growth you should remove, regardless of season. “Prune dying or diseased branches, suckers and water shoots,” says Lyndall.

“Pruning helps to stimulate growth in the plant and thicken the foliage” Lyndall Keating, horticulturist and landscape designer

Suckers appear around the base of grafted plants like citrus or stone fruit. Water shoots are vigorous, upright growths on the trunk or branches. “These often occur on eucalypts and olive trees,” explains Lyndall. Also remove any branches growing in the wrong direction.

TOP TRIMMING TIPS n “ Always use clean, sharp

tools,” says Chloe Thomson. Otherwise you risk leaving wounds that can be entry points for fungi or disease.

nU se the right tool for the

job. Secateurs are great for branches less than 2cm diameter. For thicker growth, use loppers or a pruning saw.

Keep in mind... When pruning, always wear protective gear such as gloves and long sleeves as the leaves and sap of some plants can be a skin irritant and/or cause allergic reactions. n Store sharp pruning tools in protective covers and carry them with the points facing down. n When using a hedge trimmer, wear gloves and eye protection and always stand on a steady, level surface. n

What to tackle now

Hedges “Trimming a hedge now will encourage new growth to harden up before winter,” says Lyndall Keating. Don’t cut it back drastically – just a light trim to tidy and shape. Shrubs and perennials Remove spent blooms from summer-flowering perennials like agapanthus, hebe, lavender and roses. Avoid hardpruning roses, as this will encourage shoots which can be damaged by winter frosts, but do tackle hydrangeas, cutting back only stems that have flowered to a set of plump buds. Tip-prune grevillea, westringia and callistemon to keep them bushy. Fruiting trees and canes It’s common to wait until winter to prune deciduous fruit trees like apple, pear and stone fruit. But with established trees, you

n Sterilise tools between cuts.

can prune in autumn once fruiting has finished. This reduces vigorous vegetative growth and allows plants to focus on flowering and fruiting in spring. “Always remove dead and diseased wood and any overlapping branches,” says Lyndall. “This encourages air flow, which helps reduce pests and diseases and increases the chances of pollination.” Follow up by removing young, excess growth on the main branches but leave the spurs with flower buds. Prune back summer-fruiting raspberries and hybrid blackberries once harvest is done. Cut canes that bore fruit this year down to ground level, but leave the new canes as they will fruit in the new season. Autumn raspberries can be cut back to ground level after fruiting has finished.

“Wipe the blades with a diluted bleach solution or rubbing alcohol so you don’t spread any diseases,” says Chloe.

A lush lawn completes a home. Yates has the solution for top turf

A

nyone who has sunk their toes into cool grass on a summer’s day knows the value of a lawn. As well as its luscious feel under bare feet, it’s a stage on which family memories are made, from wobbly first bike rides to backyard soccer and barbecues with friends.

CARE FACTOR Mowing and watering your lawn is basic lawn care, but optimising your green space means giving it nitrogen and iron, the key nutrients it needs, plus waging war on weeds, such as bindii, clover, dandelion and thistles. Enter Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed®, the fuss-free combination solution.

KNOW YOUR LAWN Start by working out what type of lawn you have. Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed® is designed to bring out the best in common lawn types, including couch

and kikuyu lawn. If you have buffalo turf, choose Yates Buffalo Pro® Weed ‘n’ Feed™, which is specially formulated for buffalo. It can be used on all turf types, so if you’re not sure which variety you’re dealing with, go for Buffalo Pro®.

SPRAY OR SCATTER Applying Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed® couldn’t be easier. There are two options. The ready-to-use hose-on pack is ideal for large areas of lawn. The bottle clicks onto your hose and includes a handy on/off switch to help prevent waste and save water. Or there’s the granular type, which you scatter across your lawn like seed, then water in after two days – it gives you more control, ideal for treating patches of weeds, and is a handy solution for small lawns or areas that aren’t accessible with the hose. Yates’ dual-action products let you spend less time worrying about your lawn and more time enjoying it.

fter a summer of hard work in harsh sunlight, your outdoor furniture is well and truly due for a little pampering. Some attention now can help your furnishings recover from rough treatment or get them fighting fit before the damp and cold of winter set in. Here are our TLC tips.

Photography (far right and opposite) Sam McAdam-Cooper; Getty Images. †Available to order online or at the Special Orders Desk.

A gentle wash and a coat of oil can revive and protect a timber setting

Timber

Stuart McCausland of Cabot’s says outdoor timber furniture can be kept looking good with an annual clean and a coat of oil. “Timber adapts to its environment; it dries out and contracts in dry conditions, and it absorbs moisture and swells in wet conditions,” he explains. “This swelling and contracting can lead to splitting. Moisture can also lead to rot, which thrives in damp and unventilated environments, even if your furniture

is covered. So it’s a good idea to give it a few coats of oil or stain in the lead-up to winter to prevent more moisture from getting in.” This is an easy afternoon project. First, remove any surface marks, oil and grease using a mild oil-based soap and warm water, or a specialised cleaner like Cabot’s Deck Clean. Allow the timber to dry naturally. Next, apply a quality outdoor furniture oil as per the instructions. Allow to dry before covering or storing.

Keeping wicker furniture clean looks tricky due to its uneven surfaces, but the task is easier than you might think

Synthetic wicker

While synthetic wicker furniture is much hardier than the natural version, it still needs some TLC. It’s easy to clean with a mild dishwashing liquid and water solution, a stiff brush and a soft cloth. Leave it to soak for 1-2 minutes, then rinse off with a gentle spray from the garden hose. Avoid bleach and scouring agents as these can cause cracks in the plastic weave of the furniture.

Cane, wicker and rattan

“Natural wicker furniture is not intended for sustained outdoor use,” warns Richard Beazley of Wicker-Works (wickerworks.com.au). That said, it can be used outside if properly cared for. “Clean using a mild soap solution and a soft scrubbing brush, and rinse well with clean water,” says Richard. “It’s important to allow the wicker to dry naturally away from any heat.” If there is mould present, spray on diluted bleach and leave for a few minutes before rinsing. Once dry, sand with a fine/medium sanding sponge. When smooth and dust free, apply a thin coat of equal parts raw linseed oil and mineral turps and leave for 15 minutes. Wipe off any excess oil. Allow to dry overnight and apply one or two more coats. Buff well. “The sheen will fade over time, but can be revived by lightly wiping over again with oil,” explains Richard.

It’s time to spruce up the furniture in your outdoor room and have it fresh and ready to go for another season of alfresco entertaining 66 bunnings.com.au |

Metal

Metal furniture should be cleaned with a cloth or sponge and a mild soap and water solution, then wiped dry. Sunscreen and bird poo should be cleaned off immediately as they can permanently stain and corrode. Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or cleaners that might scratch the finish, expose the metal and encourage rust. For ingrained dirt, use a non-abrasive multipurpose cleaner. For tougher stains and mildew, use a solution of water and white vinegar. While stainless steel does not rust, fingerprints, water marks and ‘tea staining’ – where the steel attracts brown marks – can affect its sleek, clean lines. Use white vinegar on a damp soft cloth to rub off fingerprints and water marks, and a baking powder and water paste on a soft-bristled brush to remove tea staining. Rinse clean with fresh water. Aluminium also does not rust, but can oxidise into a chalky white stain. Remove with a metal polishing paste or an equal parts solution of white vinegar and water, then wash with warm soap and water. Wrought iron is more challenging in the rust department. Remove chipped paint and rust spots with a wire brush or paint scraper, and finish with fine sandpaper for a smooth surface. Vacuum using a small brush attachment, then wash with warm soap and water. An old toothbrush makes cleaning tight curves and crevices a cinch. Repaint or reseal the metal immediately to prevent further rust forming; wipe down with mineral spirits such as turps, prime with a rust-resistant primer and finish with a few light coats of rustresistant enamel paint.

ABOVE While your garden furniture might be able to withstand being outside all summer, it pays to store it somewhere dry in winter

Outdoor fabric

Outdoor furniture fabrics are resilient and easy to clean, says Ron Wannet of Pacific Trends International (suppliers of Mimosa and Marquee outdoor furniture). For post-summer therapy, “Brush off loose dirt and particles, then wash with warm water and mild detergent using a sponge or soft brush,” he says. “For stains, don’t rub with a circular motion, but wipe across the fabric from seam to seam to prevent water rings. Allow your cleaning solution to soak the fabric for 1–2 minutes, then rinse with clean water and air dry.” For best results, clean regularly to reduce opportunities for mildew and mould to grow. Do not remove the foam from the fabric when cleaning. Do not machine wash or dry, and avoid bleach.

FIRE PIT

Styling assistant Samantha Pointon. ‡Available from mid-April. *Not available in WA.

Tools & materials nS afety equipment (boots, gloves, mask, ear and eye protection) n String line and peg n Measuring tape n Landscaping rake n Shovel n Small compactor n Club hammer n 1m level n Rubber mallet n Utility knife n Screwdriver

nS pray marking paint n Half tonne of road base n 42 300mm x 160mm x 100mm retaining wall blocks* n Landscaping adhesive with caulking gun n 9 lengths 1200mm x 100mm flexible garden edging n 36 garden edging pegs n Half tonne of 30-50mm decorative pebbles n Metal fire pit

1 Position a peg at the centre of the zone. Attach a string line to mark out a 4m-diameter circle with marking paint. Clear the area with a rake, then spread road base with a shovel and use a small compactor to pack it firmly to a 50mm-thick layer. Tip: You could pack the road base by hand with a tamper, but a small compactor from the Hire Shop will do the job faster and more efficiently.

2 Before building the fire pit wall, remove the retaining lips from the back of the blocks by positioning them face down, holding with one gloved hand while tapping along the lip at an angle with a club hammer. Tip: Wear eye protection and work on cardboard to protect the front from chipping.

3 Reposition the peg at the centre and set out 14 angled blocks in a round with a 1080mm-diameter inner circle, checking the distance between the peg and blocks. Check the tops are even using a level, tapping with a hammer as needed. Tip: The wall is designed with 14-block courses to minimise the gaps.

4 Working in sections, apply landscaping adhesive over the first course, then set out a second, staggering the joins in a stretcher bond pattern. Angle the blocks with even gaps, applying adhesive between them, and repeat for a third course, leaving to dry.

5 Install flexible garden edging, pushing it against surrounding turf to tap a peg into the first pre-drilled hole with a rubber mallet. Curve it while tapping pegs into the remaining holes and repeat with the remaining pieces, trimming the last to fit with a utility knife.

6 Cover the area within the edging and wall with 30-50mm pebbles. Assemble fire pit bowl with a screwdriver and position it inside the wall, checking that it sits flat and maintains clearance underneath.

FIRE PIT SAFETY TIPS nT o keep the area safe from

1 Set out the first course of the bench with six blocks facing outwards and five facing inwards, using five 50mm-thick pavers as spacers, with two at the ends. Apply adhesive to all joins and tap into place with a club hammer. Tip: Knock the retaining lips off blocks for the first, second and fourth courses (see step 2 of the fire pit instructions).

2 Apply adhesive to lay the second course with the back of the blocks set 10mm in (over the spacers), tapping into position. For the third course, keep the retaining lips on the blocks and position them overhanging into the centre gap, applying adhesive to all adjoining surfaces. Lay the fourth course. Leave to dry.

3 For the seat, mark the centre of a 1800mm x 605mm panel. At the ends, install screws 10mm and 420mm up from the base. At the centre, install screws 10mm and 420mm down from the top. Position all screws 10mm in from the edges and protruding by 25mm. Push a length of 4mm moulding against the screws, pressing down firmly to trace the curves. Tip: Reduce costs by having a 2440mm x 1220mm x 9mm marine ply sheet cut to 1800mm, then cut in half lengthways. Create an 18mm-thick panel by joining with exterior adhesive and clamping to dry.

4 Clamp the panel to a workbench with the first half of the cut line unobstructed and use a jigsaw to make the cuts to halfway. Remove clamps and move the panel to complete the cuts. Test-fit the seat on the bench, marking the corners on the panel, then re-clamp to cut the ends.

flying sparks, ensure the fire pit bowl is positioned well away from combustible structures including fencing, decking and overhanging trees. Always check your fire pit manufacturer’s safety and set up advice. nB efore lighting, put a 25mm-thick layer of dry sand in the base of the bowl to help radiate the heat upwards, then start the fire slowly with crumpled newspaper or fire starters under a couple of untreated logs, lighting with long safety matches. nT o manage the fire, wear heat-resistant gloves while using the supplied poker, then replace the spark guard. nE nsure lit fires are never left unattended and that children and pets are supervised at all times. nA lways attend the fire as it burns out or douse it with sand, and have a hose and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. nA dding lights around the area creates ambience and highlights any trip hazards.

Keep in mind... Prior to excavating, contact Dial Before You Dig (1100.com.au) to check the location of underground pipes, cables and utilities and avoid damaging them. n When moving heavy materials, enlist a second pair of hands to help out, and wear rigger’s gloves and protective footwear. n Check with your local council if and when there are fire bans in your area or if you need a licence to light an open fire. n

5 Smooth all over using a sander with 120-grit, then 180-grit abrasive paper. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Seal both sides and around the edges with three coats of marine-grade varnish using a mini mohair roller, leaving to dry after each. Tip: Ensure the edges are well sealed for maximum protection from moisture.

6 Apply adhesive over the top of the blocks and drop the seat into position, pushing down to hold it in place, and leave to dry.

STAIN ALIVE

GIVE OLD FURNITURE A FRESH LOOK WITH A SIMPLE SAND-AND-STAIN TREATMENT

Before

T

imes and tastes change, but there’s no need to throw out furniture with every shift in trends. A refresh with one of the huge range of stains available can transform a timber piece, changing a warm-hued console table like this one into a black ‘Japandi’ style statement. Choose a stain that will complement your space, echoing or gently contrasting with existing finishes.

DO IT

TABLE MAKEOVER

SAFETY TIP

Paint and stain are great revivers of old furniture – but if your piece is an antique, check with an expert before refinishing as this could affect its value

Tools & materials nS afety equipment (mask, disposable gloves, ear and eye protection) n Microfibre cloth n Claw hammer n Drill with various bits n 75mm joint knife n Random orbital sander n Cloths n 38mm paintbrush n Paint stirrer n 120- and 180-grit abrasive discs n Timber filler n Stain (we used Black Japan)

AS THIS PROJECT INVOLVES SANDING AND STAINING, IT’S BEST TO COMPLETE IT OUTSIDE

1 Remove dust and cobwebs by wiping the table with a microfibre cloth.

2 Remove any hardware such as handles and castors using a claw hammer for nails and a drill for screws, keeping the fasteners to reattach later.

3 Use a joint knife to fill any cracks and dents with timber filler, building it up in layers over deep holes and leaving to dry thoroughly after each.

4 Use a random orbital sander with 120-grit abrasive disc to remove excess filler. Smooth all over to remove flaking varnish or paint, then repeat with 180-grit. Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Keep paint and stain out of reach of children. Get help when moving heavy furniture pieces.

5 Apply an even coat of timber stain with a paintbrush, leaving it to be absorbed for a couple of minutes. Wearing disposable gloves, wipe away excess with a cloth and leave to dry. Repeat with at least one more coat, then replace the hardware. Tip: Stir, don’t shake, the can before using as shaking can form bubbles that affect the finish.

PLANTS

SAVOURY SUPERSTARS

Flavour bombs Plant these in the backyard for taste on tap in the kitchen

Garlic

This fragrant bulb is available as soft-necked for warm climates, and hard-necked for cooler areas (best planted in spring). Separate into individual cloves – don’t remove the ‘skin’ – and plant pointy end up in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Cover with soil, so the tops are just below the surface, and water when the cloves have germinated.

Coriander

Pungent (and polarising), coriander will thrive in the right conditions: full sun or part shade and well-drained soil improved with compost. Plant seedlings, or scatter seeds, lightly cover and water in well. Keep soil moist during the growing season and liquid feed regularly.

Garlic

Coriander

(Allium sativum)

(Coriandrum sativum)

Garlic is ready to harvest when the leaves start to die down, from 8-9 months after planting.

After about 6 weeks, pick leaves as needed – you can also use the stems, roots and seeds.

Curly leaf parsley

Spring (or green) onion

Parsley

The most commonly used form of this leafy herb is flat leaf or Italian parsley, which likes full sun. Curly leaf parsley is often seen as a garnish, has a slightly more robust flavour and does best in part shade. Harvest outer stalks often to encourage more shoots and leaves.

The salad-lover’s favourite, these are not immature onions and don’t form a true bulb. Instead, they have hollow stalks with stringy roots and a milder flavour. Plant in welldrained soil in full sun or part shade. Sow seed every 3-4 weeks for a continuous supply. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants
