Tick off this to-do list for tiptop outdoor areas. For more on what to do in the garden during August, go to bunnings.com.au/garden-diaries
Mr Fothergill’s ‘Tomato Red Cherry’ windowsill greenhouse kit, $9.25, I/N: 2962014 In cooler areas, get a head start on your tomatoes and sow seeds indoors. This gives you time to prepare garden beds too. Remove old vegies and mix in aged manure and compost. Give lawns a little TLC with a complete fertiliser. This will nourish the soil and encourage lush, green growth.
Munns Professional ‘Golf Course Green’ lawn fertiliser, $19.55/5kg, I/N: 0049343
Avoid pruning frost-affected foliage, especially if more cold weather is expected. Leave them be until the last chance of frost has passed. Encourage wildlife to visit by planting nectarrich natives, like grevilleas, banksias and callistemons. Use a native-specific fertiliser.
Scotts ‘Osmocote’ native controlled release fertiliser, $13.95/1kg, I/N: 2961303 If you have been slow to plant deciduous trees and shrubs, now’s your last chance. Head in store, make your purchase, prepare the ground and get planting!
It’s time to sow and grow! Try beetroot, leafy greens, peas, radish and silverbeet. Or try a few floral favourites, such as marigolds, petunias and nasturtiums. Viburnum opulus snowball bush Prepare for a season of planting! Enrich garden beds with plenty of compost, wellaged manures and organic matter. If the soil is claybased, add gypsum too. } Tumbleweed ‘Worm Buffet’ in-ground worm farm, $29, I/N: 0201386 Want an easy composting solution? Install an in-ground worm farm into raised beds or vegie patches. The worms come and go as they please and you simply top it up with kitchen scraps as needed.
Richgro gypsum clay breaker fertiliser, $10.45/15kg, I/N: 3010181

LIGHT HACK FOR NEW HOMES
R
enovating or building your dream home? This one’s for you! Good natural light has a host of benefits, including lower power bills, and can even be a health bonus. Reportedly, sunlight can contribute to reduced stress and anxiety, a boosted immune system and better eyesight*. If you’re constructing a covered alfresco area off your openplan living room, even large glazed doors may not allow enough natural light to reach the back of your space. The solution: high level windows (also known as clerestory), installed above the sliding doors and hugging the ceiling. Your builder will be able to advise on this, and also on the right angle of the rooflines to dramatically increase the amount of sunlight in your home.
Make sure any lighting used outside is suitable for outdoors. Any hardwired electrical fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician
The fifth wall
The ceiling is often a neglected space – we slap on a coat of white paint and forget about it. But it needn’t be boring or bland. Spice it up with a graceful cornice – made to hide the sometimes iffy bit between the wall and ceiling, a cornice can also deliver a characterful finishing touch to your interiors. Check out these style suggestions from Gyprock. ◆

Handmade hero Look to Dremel to carve out your role as Dad’s favourite this Father’s Day
G
ot a DIY-loving dad? Or are you a creative soul, looking to step up your gift-making game? Either way, Dremel has you covered this Father’s Day. The high-powered and versatile Dremel 4300 rotary tool and its wide range of accessories will make you a firm favourite with Dad.
THE CENTREPIECE Power tools don’t get much more versatile than a hand-held rotary tool. Built with a redesigned airflow system, the Dremel 4300 is the most powerful Dremel on the market, but runs quietly and smoothly. The tool is compatible with all Dremel accessory shank sizes, so you or Dad can jump between sanding, cutting, engraving and carving with ease.
ALL IN THE DETAILS The beauty of the Dremel system is that, once you’ve invested in the core tool,
there are lots of attachments and accessories for different applications, such as the Micro Kit 733, which has been specially curated for woodwork. The 20-piece kit features tools for carving, drilling and sanding. Giving outdoor timber furniture a refresh? The sanding attachments will help you get into all those tight spots, while the carving accessories allow you to personalise a new (timber) piece.
TAKING THE PLUNGE If you’re already a keen woodworker or crafter, chances are there’s a plunge router on your wish list – with the Dremel 335 router base attachment, you can transform your Dremel into a mini-plunge router to help you achieve those fancy edges and detailed profiles.
A LIGHTER TOUCH With the Dremel 225 flex shaft attachment, just about anything can be customised. Tight spots, nooks, and corners are all within reach when you add the flexible 91.4cm shaft to your corded rotary tool or the 10.8V lithium-ion cordless. The comfort grip handpiece gives you fingertip control for precise polishing, carving, sanding and engraving.
DRILLING DOWN Need a drill press? The Dremel 220 workstation is even better, serving as three tools in one: a drill press, tool holder and a flex shaft holder. If you’re looking to drill accurate (perpendicular or angled) holes, or even just to secure your Dremel so you can sand smaller shapes, this piece has you covered. 1 Dremel 220 workstation drill press attachment, $79.95, I/N: 6200017. 2 Dremel 733AB 20-piece woodwork micro kit, $34.98, I/N: 0248897. 3 Dremel 335 plunge router attachment, $49.95, I/N: 6373700. 4 Dremel 4300-5/50 rotary tool, $199, I/N: 6280100. 5 Dremel 225 flex shaft direct drive attachment, $57.95, I/N: 6325587.

Seeds are the ultimate example of good things in small packages – just add soil and water to grow your dream vegies and flowers from scratch

ithout a doubt, seeds are one of the most economical ways to grow plants – for just a few dollars, you can buy them in abundance. This is no secret, but many go straight to seedlings or mature plants, believing seeds to be difficult to grow. But with the right plant choice and care, they can thrive. Here’s how to ensure yours succeed. bunnings |

Plan it
The first, embryonic leaves to emerge are known as cotyledons or ‘seed leaves’, and provide nourishment to the sprouting plant
Do the groundwork Before sowing into garden beds, remove the competition. “Get rid of weeds as they steal valuable water and nutrients from your plants,” says horticulturist Chloe Foster (@fosteryourgarden). Hand weed regularly to control them. When the bed is clear, enrich it with plenty of compost and well-rotted manure and work it into the soil – the final texture should be fine and crumbly. If the soil is difficult to dig or you don’t have the space for garden beds, use a planter filled with premium-quality potting mix. It’s best to raise seeds in a separate tray or pot filled with fine seed-raising mix (rather than the coarser potting mix) before transplanting them. Make your selection Most plants grow well from seed, but as a general rule, the bigger, the better. “Large-seeded varieties, like beans, peas, sweet corn, pumpkin, sunflowers, sweet
peas and nasturtiums, are foolproof,” says Dana Pank, horticultural adviser to Mr Fothergill’s. “They’re easier to handle and more robust, making them ideal for beginners.” But size doesn’t always matter. “Plants in the onion family also grow well from seed – try spring onions, onions, chives, leeks and shallots,” suggests Chloe. There are plants that can perform better when grown from seed as they do not transplant well. These include root vegies, like carrot, daikon, parsnip and turnip. “Sow them directly where they are to grow, as transplanting seedlings can damage or stunt their growth,” explains Dana. Prep and prime Some seeds need extra care before you put them to bed. They typically have a hard coating that needs to be broken down or removed to help break dormancy and encourage germination. “Australian wildflowers such as native wisteria and Sturt peas need scarifying and soaking
EXPERT TIP Protect emerging seedlings from snails and slugs by scattering snail pellets around garden beds. But be aware they can be toxic to pets; alternatives include a cloche or similar as a physical barrier

trays as you have better control of the growing environment,” says Chloe. Use a shallow tray or container with drainage holes, and fill with seed-raising mix. Alternatively, to help minimise root disturbance, try biodegradable pots or peat pellets. “These pots can be planted straight into the garden once seedlings are ready,” says Chloe. Sowing in pots or trays on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse helps you get a head start on your growing season. “Plant tomato, chilli or zucchini seeds indoors in late winter and they will be ready to plant out by the time the weather warms,” says Dana. You can, of course, sow direct into prepared beds when the conditions are right for your area.

Sowing for success For tips, refer to the back of the seed packet, which will specify the depth, spacing and correct planting times. Missing these criteria can result in poor – or worse, zero – germination. But if you sow them too close together, don’t worry. “This is an opportunity to thin or remove the weaker, straggly looking seedlings and open up the final spacing distance,” says Dana Pank. If you’re unsure, a great hack is ‘seed tape’, where seeds are correctly positioned along a layer of tissue-like biodegradable paper. Simply roll out and plant at the right depth. “The tape eliminates the need for thinning, saving you the hassle,” adds Dana. For small seeds, like carrots, kale, coleus, poppies and sweet alyssum, it can be tricky to sow individual seeds. If you’re a perfectionist, a pair of tweezers is handy. Place seeds on the soil surface and lightly

NEW-SEASON LOOK Spring into the warm months and paint your garden with potted colour. It’s easy with Northcote Pottery and Cyclone hand tools
W
hatever your garden situation – modest balcony to palatial grounds – potted plants are a fantastic way to make a statement. Spring is a great time to add more fabulous foliage to your home, invigorating your patio for a fresh new-season look! Punctuating your garden with potted foliage is so simple, with a little help from Northcote Pottery and Cyclone hand tools.
STEP 1: PICK YOUR POT What’s your garden style? Whether you’re after a touch of rustic charm, like the ‘Kentucky’ whiskey barrel planter, or a clean coastal feel with a sand-toned ‘Maxim’ drum, Northcote Pottery has a look to love. You’ll also need to think about what you’ll be planting in it, as Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
this will naturally influence your decision; Northcote Pottery’s Precinct Lite range comes in a range of sizes, including generously deep and wide pots, which can hold bigger plants or a selection of varieties, if you want to try a collage of ‘thrill, spill and fill’ foliage. Will you need to move the pot from season to season, or for cleaning? The ‘Villa’ plastic trough offers modern good looks, with the flexibility of a lightweight material, so you can lift and move it easily.
STEP 2: START WITH SOIL Decide what you’ll be planting and pick an appropriate high quality potting mix. The Cyclone potting scoop (4), with its large stainless steel cup, makes the task of filling planters with soil quicker and cleaner. If you do make a mess of

the patio in the process, a quick sweep will clear off any dirt in a jiffy. Tracked soil inside too? The Cyclone ProSeries multi-surface broom (5) is the one you want to have on hand – tough enough to tackle outdoor mess, but soft enough to travel inside when needed.
STEP 3: POTTING UP Good tools not only make this part of the job cleaner and easier, they also give you more control, so you can avoid damaging new plants. The Cyclone hand trowel (1) is a must-have gardener’s friend, used for potting up and dividing smaller plants, while the Cyclone bulb trowel (2) is its trusty
sidekick, ideal for not only planting bulbs, but also for transplanting small, delicate plants or seedlings.
STEP 4: KEEP IT TIDY You’ve planted up your pots and they’re looking amazing! Now keep them lovely with a Cyclone hand fork (3). Use the leather strap to hang this beauty within easy reach, because it’s about to become your new favourite tool, used for lightly cultivating between shallow-rooted plants, and for regularly attacking weeds. Whip it out for weeding your beautifully planted pots, or use it to make short work of pesky weeds sullying your perfect lawn.

Celebrate spring at Australia’s brightest flower festival, at Commonwealth Park, Canberra, September 11 till October 10
Hello blossoms Australia’s biggest celebration of spring is a visual and cultural feast like no other. Welcome to Floriade!
E
very year, for one gloriously colourful month, the nation’s capital celebrates the arrival of spring with Floriade, a world-class, flower-filled extravaganza. It’s a time when Canberra sheds its sharply cut suit in favour of a wonderfully loud floral number, filling its parks and gardens with a sea of blooms that forms a stunning backdrop to a month-long, free event celebrating flowers, art, music, food, wine and much more.
A MILLION REASONS TO VISIT
Photography Martin Ollman and Jo Bakas
On September 11, the largest flower festival in the southern hemisphere will once again burst into life in Commonwealth Park in the heart of Canberra. And it promises to be spectacularly colourful; Floriade’s gardeners have planted a million bulbs, with a further 300,000 adding splashes of spring colour throughout the city.
FUTURE FOCUS This year’s Floriade theme, The Future of Flowers, puts the spotlight on sustainability and climate change, with a focus on changing horticultural practices and backyard gardening. The theme will be reflected in the displays and flowerbed designs, as well as guided tours, talks and workshops,
where visitors can learn about gardens of the future, sustainable food production and upcycled art and fashion.
FLOWERS, FOOD AND FUN While Floriade is an inspirational nirvana for horticulturists, landscapers and gardeners, it’s about much more than tiptoeing through the tulips – the floral displays are part of a festival filled with entertainment, cultural celebrations and activities for all ages. It is also an opportunity to browse market stalls and meet the food and wine producers behind some of the Canberra region’s best products. For families, there’s no chance of the kids getting bored, with plenty of activities on offer for little gardeners, including gnome painting, art and craft sessions, and potting up classes.
WHILE YOU’RE THERE…
JOIN THE PARTY There’s some after-dark magic coming to Floriade this year, too, with the return of NightFest, from September 30 to October 3. As the sun goes down, it’s a chance to kick back and soak up the atmosphere under the stars with cutting-edge garden lighting, live music, DJs, comedy acts and night markets. For tickets and more information, visit floriadeaustralia.com.
Once you’ve finished marvelling at the beauty of nature, head beyond Floriade’s gates to explore some of Canberra’s top attractions. There’s something for the curious, adventurous, culture-vulture, child or foodie in us all: a thriving food and wine scene, outdoor adventures, museums, galleries, national attractions and a kid’s paradise of activities. Captain your own electric GoBoat on a picnic cruise of Lake Burley Griffin, take the kids on a journey of discovery at Questacon, or tour the many cellar doors a short drive from the city. he secret to a tidy home is as simple as storage. But while more storage is better, it’s equally about how you store your stuff. Do an audit to check you’re making the most of every inch in cupboards and drawers, master your organisation so everything is readily at hand, and balance open shelves so they work hard but are still easy on the eye. Tweaking your storage – and adding a few clever solutions – can take your home from chaos to calm.

oo much washing and not enough space – it’s an everyday problem that many of us can relate to, including Dave and Lisa, whose laundry couldn’t tackle the task of cleaning up after their family of three outdoorsloving boys. “We constantly had clothes hanging around us inside, especially in winter,” says Dave. The couple had renovated the rest of their house, but the laundry had been left until last. “It’s often the room that gets forgotten,” says Bunnings Make It Happen series host and renovation expert Lucy Glade-Wright of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com). “People don’t really want to invest that much money into their laundry because it’s not where you’d have your guests around! We needed to create a really functional, organised space to streamline their laundry systems and create more room.” The Bunnings team delivered a whole new scheme, designed to address every one of Dave and Lisa’s laundry gripes.
Hanging out Three boys with a love of footy and mountain biking creates more than the average volume of washing – and Dave and Lisa’s biggest challenge was getting everything dry in a cool, often damp climate. “We had to find additional spaces within the small layout, so they could hang and dry their clothes inside and not have to dry them throughout the house,” says Lucy. The multi-pronged solution included a rail above the sink, a heated towel rail and an ingenious cabinetry hack, involving fitting rails into a standard drawer, which pulls out over an existing heating vent. “Everything can hang on the wall or in the cabinet and it leaves the floor space free and clean,” explains Dave. Dial down the dark Light was a major issue in the laundry, and the existing colour scheme wasn’t helping matters! Dave and Lisa had already given the rest of the house a grey-and-white makeover, so the laundry palette was

chosen to match, with walls in Dulux Lexicon and Porter’s Paints Dusty Mule. The team lifted the light quota by installing a solar skylight in the ceiling, LED strip lighting under the cabinets and painting a partially glazed door bright white. All systems go With direct access to the outdoors, the laundry operates as a mud room, catching the sports gear, muddy shoes and wet clothes that Dave and Lisa’s boys shed as they come in. Putting in place systems and accessible storage to cater for this makes the space work harder. “Because they’re such a busy family with so many activities, it’s not realistic to have everything hidden away all the time,” says Lucy. A series of tubs under the bench are a handy solution, forming a permanent home for items like sports shoes and equipment. Hide and seek Some products – such as washing powder and pet food – are used often enough to earn a permanent position on the benchtop, but these practical items needn’t detract from the overall look. “Frequently used items that need to be on your benchtop will be visible – display these items with both style and practicality in mind,” suggests Lucy. Decanting into jars – actually repurposed and neatly labelled glass planters – was the simple but effective solution. Elsewhere, every inch of cabinet space has been utilised for savvy storage: clips keep brooms off the floor of the tall cupboard, the backs of cabinet doors are fitted with baskets and hooks, and pull-out bins hold bulky bags of pet food. ◆

Remove the drawer from the cabinet and use a drill with driver bit to remove the runners and unscrew the sides to slide out the base. Reassemble the drawer and tighten the screws. Tip: If the sides don’t unscrew, use a jigsaw to cut out the base.
On the hanging rails, mark the length of the drawer rails. Clamp each rail to a flat surface and cut to size with a hacksaw. Tip: Position a drop sheet or cardboard underneath to catch the shards.
Measure the inside length of the drawer to check how many rails will fit, allowing at least 60mm between them. Measure the inside width for the rail length and subtract 5mm to allow for the brackets. Tip: The rails are 20mm thick; we used five.
Use a combination square to mark a line along the sides at least 40mm up. Mark out the rails. Use a bracket as a template to mark holes, then pre-drill with a 2mm bit. Tip: Wrap tape around the bit 10mm from the end to indicate the depth.
TIP When selecting your drawer, consider what’s underneath and around it to make sure it won’t be a hindrance when in use
Secure the brackets into the holes with the supplied screws, then drop in the rails.
Reposition drawer runners and secure with screws, then slide drying rack back into the cabinet. }

Spread a drop sheet over the benchtop and prepare the wall by using a paint scraper to remove flaking paint or bumps. Tip: Clean up with a dustpan and brush, then remove dust from the wall with a damp cloth.
Measure each row and mark the back of the tiles that need cutting with a pencil. Position them upside-down in the tile cutter, scoring along the mark with the blade and pushing the handle down to snap the tile.
Push the first tile into the adhesive so it stays against the wall, but not so hard it squeezes out the sides. Position the next tile, adding spacers for even gaps. Tip: At the end, place the cut tile with the raw edge facing outwards, away from the row.
TILE A SPLASHBACK A new splashback can transform any laundry space, introducing a fresh and bright new look that makes doing the washing that bit nicer. HANDHELD HEROES
When it comes to tools, the biggest model isn’t always the best – or most powerful. Case in point: the ONE+ HP brushless compact cut off tool is light enough to be used with one hand and squeezes into spots too tight for a conventional angle grinder, such as under sinks. The ONE+ HP compact recip saw is similarly made for tight spaces and light enough for onehanded cutting, but with the heart of a bigger tool, delivering 3,000 strokes per minute so you can cut quickly and smoothly. Also designed with access in mind, the ONE+ HP brushless angle drill has a head height of just 89.5mm and single-hand functionality in different grip positions, so you can use it where other drills can’t go. Kit yourself out with everything you need to handle simple repairs around your home
H
ow often have you wished you didn’t have to call a professional just to fill some gaps or fix a sticky door? Don’t fork out for jobs you can easily do yourself – with the right tools in your kit, you’re more likely to have the confidence to take matters into your own hands.
Gripping tales Where would you be without a tool to grab, grip, crimp, bend and twist things that are just too hard for your fingers? A good pair of long nose pliers will help you reach into confined spaces to extract stuck objects, plus the built-in wire cutter is handy for everything from garden tie wire to snipping machine screws. Locking pliers are sometimes called vice grips – and the name fits. They can be adjusted to lock tightly onto a bolt or anything else you need to hold, and they won’t slip off until you flick the release lever. They’re perfect for holding a nut while you tighten the bolt from the other side. For all those times when you need to press and hold something you’re gluing, hold a piece of timber firmly for sawing to length or just want a spare pair of hands, bar clamps are the way to go. Simply squeeze to lock on and click the trigger to release. bunnings |

Got the power? If you’re only going to buy one cordless tool, make it a drill/driver with a two-speed gearbox and torque clutch. “Torque control enables you to set up your tool to stop driving a screw in when it has reached the depth or tightness/ tension level you require,” says Andrew Murray, national training manager for Ozito. Two gears let you choose between high power for driving and extracting screws, and high speed for drilling and sanding. “Variable speed simply means you have control over the drill rotation, especially important because it’s good to start off slow when you drive screws.” Another ultimate all-rounder is a multifunction tool. “This tool uses an oscillating action, with the head moving rapidly from side to side,” explains Andrew. “Put on the sanding head and you turn your multifunction tool into a detail sander – a nimble tool for getting into tight corners.” This is the perfect way to sand a bit of extra clearance into the edge of a door and stop it from sticking in the jamb.
PRO TIP Have you ever wondered about the meaning of the tradie terms ‘drill kit’ and ‘skin only’? “A ‘skin’ just means it’s the tool only, without the battery. A cordless ‘kit’ includes the power tool, battery and a charger to get you started straight out of the box”
Hooked on a fillin’ A stash of user-friendly products makes filling cracks, gaps and holes easy. For cracks and dings in walls, ceilings and doors, use a ready-mixed filler like Selleys Spakfilla Rapid, which is easy to apply and dries very quickly, so you can paint over it fast. “For fixing larger cracks or holes in outdoor furniture, such as a timber lounge chair, concrete or ceramics such as a planter pot, a two-part epoxy filler like Selleys Knead It is a versatile product that can be shaped like putty and sets like a rock to rebuild and repair most surfaces,” says Edwin Sugiaman, brand manager at Selleys. Filling gaps around skirting boards, cabinets and inside window and door frames, and replacing split, stained and unsightly silicone in the bathroom or kitchen, are common jobs you can take on yourself – with the right tool. A caulking gun ensures steady pressure on a tube of silicone or gap filler, so you can caulk like a master, smoothly and with less mess. If you’re only taking on tiny jobs, infrequently, some products are available in easy-to-use tubes, which can be used without a caulking gun.

Mouldy grout “Start with a heavy spray of vinegar and leave it for 30 minutes. Then come back to it using a grout brush and a product like Glitz Power Paste and give it a good scrub,” suggests Jay. Benchtop blemishes Benchtops need to be treated carefully, as some off-theshelf products can affect the finish. Ground control Love every inch of your home sweet home, including the floor beneath your feet, with Vileda’s toolkit of easy cleaning solutions
Y
our home is your haven, but it doesn’t feel like a sanctuary when it’s sticky or gritty underfoot. With Vileda’s mops and refills, you can have a clean home all the time, and with minimal effort. The ‘Easy Wring & Clean Turbo’ spin mop gives you your regular deep clean, miles beyond what you’d expect from a standard cotton mop, while the ‘ProMist Max’ spray mop gives you a pristine in-between clean all week long.
A THOROUGH CLEAN Whether you’re a reluctant cleaner or an enthusiastic mopper, the ‘Easy Wring & Clean Turbo’ spin mop makes your efforts count. Highly absorbent microfibres efficiently pick up dirt and more than 99 per cent of bacteria*, while the red PowerZone strands work off any stubborn spots. The mop has its perfect cleaning partner in the matching bucket with rotating wringer, making manual wringing unnecessary. Simply press the foot pedal to wring out the mop head, applying more or less pressure to achieve desired dampness – this allows you to wring it out more thoroughly for delicate surfaces, like timber. Two bonus refills value offer, exclusive to Bunnings, comes complete with this mop and bucket set!
IN-BETWEEN CLEAN
*Research by an independent, accredited institute for microbiology and immunology. Find out more vileda.com.au/bacteria-removal
When life happens – accidental spills or just-spotted footprints when guests are about to call – the ‘ProMist Max’ flip spray mop is just perfect for freshening up and tackling everyday smears, fast, in between your weekly clean. Just grab and go, with no need for a bucket or detergent. The built-in sprayer dispenses a fine mist of water, while the microfibre mop head removes dirt and more than 99 per cent of bacteria* with water alone – no chemicals required! The head flips 180 degrees, allowing you to tackle twice as large an area without stopping.
ALWAYS FRESH Traditional mops turn grey after the first use and only get progressively grubbier over time. By contrast, Vileda’s ‘ProMist Max’ and ‘Easy Wring & Clean Turbo’ mop heads are easily removable and machine washable, so you can freshen your floors with a clean head every time you mop. Keep a spare refill (or two) on hand, so there’s always one ready to go, then pop the others in a laundry bag and wash at up to 60°C. Easy! Keep an eye on the mop heads and change to a new refill every season, or when the old ones look worse for wear. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

STEPS EXPERT TIP Our instructions are for a masonry wall. For plasterboard, omit the spacers and use buglehead batten screws instead of masonry bolts, securing them directly into the wall studs

From the top, measure and mark a line across the posts 400mm down, then 300mm apart to set out six holes (the last hole is 400mm up from the base). Use a try square to measure 45mm in from the sides to mark the centres.

From each 90mm-square pine length, use a mitre saw to cut two 30mm-thick spacers, then cut the posts to be 2300mm long. Set the saw to 20°, cutting the dowel in half to make 12 rails each 600mm-long, trimming the ends with matching angles.
On the posts, centre a mark 500mm from the top and up from the base to indicate the bolt holes. Position the posts against the wall, a metre apart, to check the bolts won’t go through mortar, adjusting the marks as needed. Mark the post positions on the wall.
Use a 25mm spade bit to drill halfway through the posts at the bolt marks, checking the holes are at least 45mm deep with a measuring tape. Complete the hole by drilling through the centre with a 12mm bit, then drill through the centre of the spacers.
Prepare the drill press with a 25mm spade bit, setting the depth to 80mm and angling the base to 20°. Clamp the posts to the workbench to drill each hole, enlisting a second pair of hands to hold the posts and distribute the weight.
Position the posts against the wall to mark through the bolt holes with a pencil. Measure 50mm up from the tip of a 12mm masonry bit to wrap painter’s tape as a depth indicator, then drill the holes into the wall for the bolt anchors.

Tip
Pizza dough
Bread and pizza flour is available from supermarkets. Substitute with gluten-free plain or bread flour if necessary
Makes 2 thin bases or 1 thick
Father’s Day feast
1 Sift flour into a large bowl, then stir in yeast, sugar and salt. Add ¾ cup warm water and oil and mix to a soft dough. Add some extra water if too dry. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. 2 Put dough into a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and rest in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour). 3 Prepare and preheat pizza oven according to the manufacturer’s instructions or place a pizza stone in a fan-forced oven while it is preheating to 220°C. 4 Dust 2 large oven slides with flour. Punch down dough and turn out on a floured surface. Shape into a ball without overworking. Cut dough in half for 2 thin bases or leave whole for a thick base. (Make double quantity of dough to make 2 thick-base pizzas.) 5 Roll out 2 pieces of dough on a lightly floured surface to 25cm rounds for thin crust or whole dough to 32cm for thick crust. Place each on a prepared tray. 6 Once assembled with toppings, slide pizzas onto hot floor in pizza oven and cook for about 4 minutes or until crisp on the base, golden and bubbling; or in oven on trays for 6 minutes to firm up base, then loosen and slide pizza onto hot pizza stone in oven for a further 12 minutes to finish baking, for a crisp crust.

Seed capital Starting from seed is not only economical; some vegies actually grow better this way Carrots Carrots love a sunny spot with welldrained, crumbly soil and plenty of compost. Sow seeds in a shallow trench, lightly cover with soil and water. Cover with a plank of wood to help keep the soil moist and remove once seeds have germinated. When seedlings reach 5cm, thin out the weak, straggly ones. Peas Grow in full sun and well-drained soil enriched with compost and well-aged manure. Provide a trellis for climbing varieties, but if you don’t have space, stick to bush or dwarf peas. Sow directly into gardens or pots, cover lightly and water in well. Don’t water again until seedlings emerge. Feed regularly and pick often to spur on more pods.
