WARDROBE STORAGE
d e t r o s f f u Ki d s ’ s t
CONTAIN CHILDREN’S MESS WITH THESE HANDY HACKS Words and styling KYLIE JACKES Photography JOHN DOWNS
N
o matter their age, in any child’s room, having plenty of storage to suit what they have to stash will help them keep their room tidy and their belongings in good order. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about well-organised cupboards! Whether you’re looking to overhaul the whole set-up or simply make the room look a little better, here are eight tricks to try.
1
2
Customise your configuration
If building a new cupboard or looking to maximise existing storage capacity, explore systems you can tailor to your needs. Flexi Storage strip and bracket systems allow you to create and alter configurations with wire and timber shelves, pull-out baskets, hanging rails, peg boards and tray shelves.
Dulux Vivid White
Use baskets
A mix of baskets is ideal for toys and T-shirts. Measure your cupboard to work out which styles and sizes will fit shelves. Rotating toys between accessible low baskets, and out-of-reach high ones, is also a good way to limit the quantity of fluffy animals and small cars in circulation. When switched around, children can ‘rediscover’ new things to play with.

3
Don’t replace, revamp!
To give wardrobes a more natural look, replace stainless-steel hanging rails with dowel, ideally 25-35mm in width so it’s sturdy and can comfortably hold clothes hangers. Add a centre pillar for extra support if needed. Changing door and drawer handles or painting existing hardware an accent colour can also give your wardrobe a new look.
4 Include open shelves
Use display shelves to personalise your storage and add decorative touches. Head-height shelves are perfect for a mini dressing area select pretty bowls to organise accessories, or simply display a few treasures to break up an expanse of drawers.
5
To encourage kids to put their clothes away, devote the bulk of their wardrobe space to accessible pull-out drawers. Wire baskets allow them to easily see the contents and stick to one type of clothing in each drawer.
Matching coathangers keep rails looking neat
rails that 6 Fit can be moved
•Timbers vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information. Paint colours may vary on application. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.
With an adjustable clothing rail, you can set it at a level your child can reach – or not. As they get older you can change the height or add double hanging rails.
7
Small items can’t fall through the tight mesh of these baskets
Do a seasonal switch
To prevent cupboard overcrowding, do an annual or biannual audit and donate surplus items. Store current-season clothes in the main section and devote the top section to alternate seasonal clothes, linen, blankets and cushions.

3 2
Prioritise drawers
8 Paint it
Cupboards and drawers cop an awful lot of handling. Painting or varnishing doors, drawer fronts and timber shelves in the right product will help make them more stain and scratch resistant and easier to clean. Plus, a fresh new colour on cabinetry can update the entire room.

W
hether you have an ageing relative or a teenager longing to move out, the solution to any accommodation issues might well be in your own backyard. Sited on the same block as the main home, a granny flat is a dwelling in its own right, ideal for giving a family member an independent living space within hollering distance. This six-by-five-metre studio was designed and built for a grandmother by her son-in-law Martin, with the help of licensed builders. Comfortable, cosy and decorated in neutral tones, it is an engaging home where form marries perfectly with function.
Light touch
One of the features that can elevate a granny flat from average to amazing is a north-facing position. “Mum can enjoy the northerly aspect by sitting on the deck, or from inside, in the living and dining space,” says Martin. “The French doors and big glass sidelights let in heaps of sunshine, filling the interior with light and warmth.” A three-quarter-height wall gives privacy between the main living area and the bedroom. “The lovely cedar window above lets in plenty of natural light to brighten both the bedroom and the living area,” explains Martin. “A gap at the top also allows the reverse-cycle air conditioner to effectively heat the entire unit.” Using recycled windows helped keep the costs down, but Martin always kept comfort front of mind. “We had the windows double-glazed for improved insulation, as it can get very chilly in our area,” he says. 24 bunnings.com.au |

A well-designed, functional kitchenette and small dining setting are ideal for Martin’s mother-in-law
Storage sorted
A full kitchen and laundry were not required here – a bar fridge, sink and microwave were plenty – but good storage was a focus. In the kitchen, flatpack shelving and cabinetry hold the essentials, while in the bedroom, clever furniture choices are a winner. The top of the bed lifts up to reveal storage space in the base. “This is useful for storing empty suitcases and items not often used,” says Martin.

Perfect picks
Pale walls, neutral flooring and decor, as well as the abundance of natural light, all help to enhance the sense of airiness in the studio, while products have been carefully chosen to cater to the home’s compact proportions. A sliding door between the living area and bedroom doesn’t require the opening space of a hinged one; wallmounted tapware in the bathroom saves room on the vanity top; and a wall light beside the bed avoids cluttering the small bedside table. Other choices were made to suit the occupant, such as fitted carpet underfoot, and lever-operated mixer taps; they are easier to use than twist models, but the on-trend brushed brass finish still makes a style statement. The studio is practically perfect for Martin’s mother-in-law in every way, providing everything she needs and nothing she doesn’t.

n extra, liveable building in your backyard can be a great addition to your property, whether you want it for a family member or as an investment. However, council building requirements for a granny flat vary significantly. In many jurisdictions, the maximum allowable floor space is 60sqm, but some councils may permit larger secondary dwellings, up to 80sqm. Block size is also a factor; 450sqm may be the minimum required to accommodate a secondary dwelling. “Check with your local council before starting your approval process, because sometimes council rules override state law,” explains Chris Clarens of Blue Gum Granny Flats (grannyflatsydney. com.au). “Normally, you can obtain approval quite quickly for a granny flat, but if you are in an area prone to flooding or at risk of bushfire, there may be additional requirements you have to meet.” There may also be restrictions on how the dwelling is used – in some states, the flat must be inhabited by an immediate family member and share services (such as power, water, sewer and driveway) with the main home. The layout will depend on planned usage but may also have to take into consideration regulations imposed by councils, for example the number of bedrooms.

Product choices
If your granny flat is housing an elderly relative, ensure it has the hardware they need to make life easier, such as lever mixer taps and door handles. Safety is an important consideration. Where possible, choose slip-resistant flooring such as carpet inside, and use grippy safety tape in outdoor areas such as patios. A flat site is ideal but, if there are any steps, make them safe by fixing non-slip tape to the surfaces and including a handrail.

more self-sufficient but, if you plan to lease out your granny flat (local laws permitting), it will need a full kitchen, including a stove. Separate access can make life easier regardless of who is using the space, but it’s imperative if you’re renting it out. Water, gas and electricity for your tenants must be separately connected, as well. “If you’re building as an investment, make sure you think about the long term,” Chris Clarens advises. “Some people overbuild and overdesign the interior, but then leave exterior aspects unfinished. You really need to go the extra mile – think about the paving, the grass, the letterbox, even the clothesline, as these are the features that will help you to stand out from similar properties.” A granny flat can be the most secure part of your home, especially if it doesn’t have separate access. “You are surrounded on all sides by neighbours, except for possibly the main house on one side. The likelihood of a break-in is extremely low,” says Chris. “Sometimes a corner block can be more exposed, so it might be worth adding security screen doors if you have a sliding glass front door.” Motion-activated security lights can be another deterrent.

CHEF’S STATION The barbecue is always the epicentre of a backyard party, but traditionally there’s not a lot of room to spread out, meaning all other food and drink prep needs to be done indoors. But with a Crossray outdoor kitchen, you can weave your gourmet magic without leaving your guests! Complete with a 63L fridge, sink, black powdercoated cabinets and a sintered stone benchtop, it’s got all the elements a barbecue chef needs. The in-built infrared gas barbecue is, of course, the main attraction and the secret to a home griller’s success; replicating the effect of cooking on a bed of hot coals, the Crossray uses indirect infrared heat to produce a very even and intense heat, with none of the hot or cool spots you get with a traditional gas burner barbecue. Efficiency is the Crossray’s watch word; not only does it heat up incredibly fast, it uses 50 per cent less gas to provide 50 per cent more heat, saving time and money. *Available to order online or from the Special Orders Desk. Add to the marinade and stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Heat an oiled barbecue plate to medium. (Try using a mesh grill mat on top of the barbecue plate to avoid sticking.) 3 Cook the kebabs for 10-12 minutes with the lid down, turning halfway and brushing with more oil, until cooked through. Colour wise
Which colour palette you choose is largely a matter of personal taste, but there are a few points to bear in mind. “You might want to go for something neutral that complements neighbouring properties, blends with local streetscapes or is classic and timeless,” says Carmen Jordan of British Paints. “Remember that some elements of your home, like your roof, are more difficult to change, so aim to match your exterior to that.” Using a single colour for walls and trims can work well, particularly for a very modern home. A trim colour that’s slightly lighter or darker, but still in the same colour family as your walls, can provide subtle visual interest. Or go bold with white trims against a dark base, or black trims against white, for a high-contrast effect that highlights your home’s architectural features. Once you have colour options in mind, pick up sample pots to try them out at home. “Paint a piece of white A4 paper or board, then stick it to an exterior wall,” says Carmen. “View it at various times of the day and night so you can see how the colour will change in different types of light.”

Keep in mind... Always wear safety equipment (eye protection and mask) while painting. n Take care when removing old paint as it could contain traces of lead. For more information, visit bunnings.com.au/health-and-safety. n When using a ladder, place it on a stable, level, solid surface, wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (for example, both feet and one hand) on it at all times and make sure another person is nearby in case you need assistance. n Use a ladder rest or gutter clamp instead of leaning the ladder directly on guttering. n A platform ladder or scaffold may be a safer, more practical option when you need to have paint tins or trays within easy reach. n

Just as you wouldn’t put diesel in a petrol car, it’s important to use the right product for the surface you are painting, from timber to plastic gutters. “A quality paint will generally offer better coverage, meaning your paint lasts longer,” says Carmen. “Your best option for outdoor projects is a paint that combines a paint and primer, such as British Paints Paint & Prime Exterior. An undercoat and topcoat in one, this helps save time, allowing you to quickly paint areas like walls or fences to make them look brand new.” If you’re painting metal gutters and

downpipes that have been painted before, scrape off loose and flaking paint, then wash with sugar soap and rinse, adds Carmen. “Fill cracks and holes with a suitable flexible exterior filler, sand smooth and dust down.” You’ll then need to apply one coat of an exterior-grade primer and two coats of your chosen exterior paint. For exposed timber, a good primer is key. Kathleen Friedrich likes the heavy-duty Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 undercoat primer/sealer/stain blocker: “This stops timber bleeding through your paint and is a must for exposed timber reveals, trims or architraves.”

“You can use the best paint you like, but if it’s applied to a surface that hasn’t been properly sanded, filled, gapped and cleaned, it’s going to look unprofessional,” says Shaun Doutre of Monarch. “Fill imperfections with a suitable filler, wait for it to dry, then sand and clean. For any gaps, such as where walls meet doorframes, apply a caulking compound. Standard fillers have limited flexibility and may fall out over time if used to fill bigger gaps.” For metal surfaces, remove any rust with a sander before applying paint. Any timber that was previously painted or has seen better days will need a thorough sanding, too. Clean surfaces with a high-pressure hose, or a scrubbing brush and water. Use sugar soap if your walls look dirty or feel greasy, says Shaun. “Rinse it off with clean water,” he adds. Take your time masking surfaces that aren’t to be painted with painter’s tape and newspaper. When masking around window frames, watch for gaps between the frame and glass. Check the tape’s package instructions, but as a general rule, aim to remove it when the paint is dry to the touch.

eeds do more than spoil the look of your garden – they divert precious water and nutrients from your plants! If you don’t control them, they spread, take over and leave you in a world of pain – literally, if they have thorns or prickles. But you don’t need to resort to tearing up the whole garden to rid yourself of unwanted plants. Work smarter, not harder, with these top five ways to help beat the flora thieves. A thick layer of mulch works wonders as a weed barrier and can become an attractive feature, too
“Densely planted gardens can prevent light filtering down to the soil level, which helps reduce the success of weed seed germination”
Low-growing creeping shrubs or groundcovers are an effective way to crowd out weedy invaders
Adam McDonald, landscape designer
2
Go undercover
In areas where it’s not practical to cover every inch of soil with plants, like a vegie bed, use mulch. This physical barrier blocks out sunlight and, as a result, prevents weeds germinating. “Mulch also helps minimise moisture loss, which is crucial during the warmer months,” says Steve. Adam suggests using an organic mulch, like pea straw. “As it breaks down, it adds valuable organic matter that helps improve the overall health and structure of the soil,” he says. Top it up throughout the year to maintain good coverage.
3
Pulling out weeds by hand is one of the most common (and satisfying!) ways to get rid of them. “But if you don’t do it right – by removing the entire plant, roots and all – most weeds will simply grow back,” says Steve. To make it easier, he suggests waiting for some rain. “Weed when the soil is moist and use a specialised weeding tool to dig deeper to help get the roots out,” he says. “Take extra care when removing weeds with bulbs or rhizomes, like onion weed or nutgrass – they will resprout from bits left behind.”
1
4
Mind the gap
Most weeds are opportunistic, so will quickly appear in bare, unplanted ground, says horticulturist Steve Falcioni of EcoOrganic Garden (ecoorganicgarden.com.au). “Keeping your soil covered with groundcovers or dense plantings reduces the chance for weeds to colonise,” he says. Choose plants with a vigorous habit. “Native violet, hardenbergia and star jasmine work well to smother out annual weeds,” says Adam McDonald of Impressions Landscape - Design (impressionslandscape.com.au).

Spray it
If weeds have taken over your garden, spraying them with a weedkiller is a way to regain control. This will allow you to kill them off before implementing solutions to keep them out. “Just remember to read the label, use the correct dilution rate and wear appropriate safety gear,” says Steve. Repeat applications may be needed, depending on how established the weeds are, or the type of weedkiller you’re using. “Organic weedkillers work on contact only; this means you need to spray weeds more thoroughly to get good results,” says Steve.

Thick ‘n’ fast
Lawn weeds often occur when the grass is patchy or poorly maintained, says Steve. “Help your lawn outcompete weeds by regularly feeding, watering and mowing,” he says. Regular upkeep will help grass grow lush and thick, leaving no room for weeds to grow. If intruders do pop up, don’t let them outstay their welcome. “Remaining proactive on the identification and early removal of weeds is key,” says Adam. If you need to control broadleaf weeds like clover, dandelion or capeweed, look for a selective lawn herbicide that will kill the weeds, but won’t harm the lawn. Most of these herbicides don’t control grassy weeds, like crabgrass or paspalum. “You can also hand pull weeds or carefully spot spray with an organic weedkiller,” says Steve.
Keep in mind... If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. n Avoid using weedkiller in vegie gardens or near edible plants. n Store all garden chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. n

LUXE BATHROOM
Spa central WELCOME RELAXATION INTO YOUR HOME WITH A RESORT-INSPIRED SHOWER AREA Words CAROLINE BOTTING
W
hen designing a bathroom, a large tub isn’t always necessary. In fact, you might be able to skip the bath entirely and make the shower the hero. Simply choose the right materials, fixtures and fittings to create a room in which to relax, unwind and feel pampered.
The shower is key to taking your bathroom from so-so to spa. “If you’re lacking space, investing in your shower can provide just as much luxury with a fraction of the footprint. Your shower should be your own personal oasis where you want to spend time,” says Andy Grigor of Methven. A double walk-in shower with two showerheads is the ultimate indulgence. For this on-trend approach, you’ll need a space of 1600mm x 1000mm. A more comfortable option would be 2000mm x 1500mm, and for a single shower with wheelchair access, 2200mm x 2000mm. If space allows, include a built-in bench and a niche for shampoos and soaps. In a smaller space with one shower, create the right vibe by going big with the showerhead, or try an overhead model offering a rainwater-style spray.

Soothing palettes
The aim is to produce a feeling of wellbeing, so the finishes and fittings you choose should play into this. A neutral palette can help create a calm feel, along with natural (or naturallook) stone such as marble, limestone and travertine. Andy also suggests a minimalist look, with stylised geometric shapes and a simplified colour palette, or a Scandi-style layering of timber touches. Whichever you choose, it should be simple, uncluttered and soothing to look at.

Serene screen
Frameless glass is the go-to choice for screens, creating a feeling of openness. “You can also make a statement with dramatic floor-toceiling glass to add impact,” says Andy Grigor. Options include having a glass screen on either side of the shower or a door that slides or folds back. LEFT The glass screen here is almost invisible, allowing the eye to travel through the room and enhance the sense of space
Fixtures and f ittings
Consider feeling, function and form when choosing your fixtures and fittings, says Andy. “Select your accessories with complementary shapes to create a cohesive look,” he advises. A double vanity gives a feeling of luxury but, if space is an issue, a wall-mounted option will visually open up a small space by allowing you to see more of the floor. Wall-hung toilets have a hidden cistern, which conceals the plumbing inside the wall. Also, invest in a heated towel rail – nothing gives a pampered feeling like a warm, dry towel!

Floors to walls
With myriad colours, styles and finishes, tiles are the go-to for any bathroom. For a resort feel, think soft colours and natural textures – durable stoneeffect tiles give a luxe look. “Usually, to make a room appear larger and grand, tiles of a light colour are preferred, not only to open a space up but to make it appear crisp and clean,” says Nicole Budge of Johnson Tiles. “A gloss or polished tile will evoke a high-end, luxurious feel, allowing light to reflect off the tiles. Using the same-design tile on the floor and wall can give the illusion of a larger space and make the room look seamless.”

A light focus
Lighting plays a large part in creating a Zen-like ambience, but what’s important is balancing both the practical and pampering side of the design, says Sharon Breeze of Brilliant Lighting. “For practicality, look at downlights or the new panel LED bathroom exhaust heaters as your main light source, then consider some lovely wall lights, or glass pendants hung near the vanity to add to the luxury feel (ideally on a separate and even a dimming switch),” she says. “These work as both vanity and mood lighting, allowing you to select daylight or warm globes for a relaxed feel.” LEFT Always consult a licensed electrician for the selection, positioning and installation of bathroom lighting and appliances bunnings.com.au |

arages can often be dumping grounds for garden tools, sports equipment and household clutter. But as our increased time at home has encouraged us to make the most of every inch, there’s more motivation than ever to get your garage kicking all the storage goals – and to acknowledge its status as one of the most quietly useful spaces in the home. Read on for tips on transforming your garage from chaos central to organised Zen.

Clear everything out
The first step in any project should be to understand the space you have to work with, says Andrew Derer of Pinnacle Hardware. “Measure all useable areas such as floor space and wall heights – this will ensure you not only maximise your storage capabilities, but also that you have a safe and workable space around your storage solution,” he says. Next, declutter. “Sort and conquer,” says Jessica Haslem of Handy Storage. Clear out and sort items into groups by use. “For example, power tools, gardening accessories, paint products, sports equipment, beach/ pool toys, suitcases, etc,” she says. Everything unwanted must go! “Get rid of anything that is broken, or hasn’t been used in 10 years,” says Jessica. Say goodbye to bottles of garden supplies with a few teaspoons of liquid left, or tins of paint from years ago. They are probably well past their best. By the end of this exercise, you’ll have an idea of exactly what you have on hand and what storage is needed.

Now the garage is empty, scrub it! Sweep out dirt and debris, and wipe down any windows. Try to remove old oil stains with a pressure washer or a stiff broom and soapy suds. If you want to go the extra mile, consider giving it a coat or two of paint.
First in, first served
When it’s time to return grouped items, consider how often they’re put into use. “Store most-used items, such as tools and gardening accessories, to the front, and less used items, such as suitcases or paint, out of the way. This will prevent you having to sort through and find items every time you need them, leading to mess,” says Jessica.

Paints Sit tins on a flat surface on heavy-duty shelving that can carry the weight, out of reach of children and pets. Toys Favourites should be

SHOP ceilings included – and exploring the huge range of sturdy hooks, racks and shelving systems now available. “Walls are often under-utilised and somewhat wasted space in the garage of most homes,” he says. “Vertical wall storage systems are ideal for slim and tall items like garden tools such as rakes and shovels.” For rarely used items, like the Christmas decorations or camping gear, a roof/ ceiling-mounted storage system that sits above vehicles is perfect, he adds. With shelving, select units that withstand a decent amount of weight – they’ll need to hold the likes of paint tins, tools and even spare tiles. Keep items that need to be fully protected from damp – clothing and the like – in heavy-duty storage crates that will keep out water, dirt and insects.

Good lighting

Well-organised spaces require decent illumination. If your garage lighting is limited, consult a licensed electrician to look at an upgrade. LED batten lighting is a good choice for garages, throwing out a lot of light. These can be hung on the ceiling and placed above work areas, cabinets and shelving. Because LED globes don’t have a filament, they have the added benefit of being less prone to damage if knocked or bumped. Work lights with clamps, along with wired-in task lighting, are an option for workbench areas.

Clean kitchen
Toasters, kettles and blenders form part of a functional kitchen, but when you’re remodelling the heart of the home, design it to include ample cupboard space (preferably with power points) to keep benchtop appliances tidied away; a clutter-free space is simpler to keep spotless. All manner of grease and grime hits kitchen splashbacks – choose glass over tiles for easy cleaning, suggests David Reece from Selleys. “Glass splashbacks are a good option for those who prefer to simply wipe things down, without dirt getting stuck in the grout of tiles,” he says. “Installing a glass splashback isn’t difficult, especially if it is a single piece.” Replace silicone sealants with those that have anti-mould properties, suggests David. “Ensure all previous mould spores have been killed and removed first,” he adds.

Mop with a damp, thoroughly wrung out mop – microfibre is better than sponge or string mops – using a pH-neutral cleaning product. Concrete floors can be kept spick and span as long as they are well sealed to ensure they’re nonporous and stain-resistant. Vinyl and laminate flooring handle coffee and red wine spills well, but ensure you’re quick to tackle them.

There are countless skirting boards with fancy mouldings and ridges, but all those grooves become little dust traps. Square skirting boards, or those with smooth oval edges, are an easy-to-maintain option. The odd scrape or chip can be quickly repaired with filler and paint, which is trickier with more detailed boards. The same principle applies to doors.

to get behind the loo? If you don’t fancy cleaning this area, select a wall-mounted or wall-faced toilet. A freestanding bath can be kept spotless easily if there’s ample space to get around it. However, if the room is tight, opt for a back-to-wall bath. With no caulk lines where the basin is attached, an all-in-one vanity top can be well-kept, says Jessica McLean from Rick McLean’s Bathware. “Mounting tapware off the wall also reduces the number of items on the benchtop to have to clean around,” she says. A wall-mounted vanity has the added benefit of easy access to clean underneath it. With tiles, the more grout that is used, the more laborious the clean, so go for large rather than smaller tiles, and consider a darker grout to

Laundry love
If you’re renovating or building, keep in mind the importance of a convenient laundry. It doesn’t need to be huge, just user-friendly. Located somewhere near the bathroom is good, so you can easily toss in wet towels or dirty clothes. If bedrooms are upstairs, consider putting in a laundry chute. An exterior door is useful, for access to the washing line or for entering the house when grubby – say, from sport or gardening – to avoid tracking dirt through the house.

Restore order
With a little care, warm season grasses can be encouraged to thicken and spread into sparse areas. Aerating and dethatching will reduce soil compaction and allow air, water and nutrients to filter through to the roots, says horticulturist Melissa King of Scotts Lawn Builder. “This means a deeper, tougher root system and a stronger, more vigorous lawn,” she says. “Regularly feeding with a slow-release lawn fertiliser will promote lush, thick growth that smothers out unwanted weeds and patches.” If it’s been a long time since any lawn maintenance, apply a soil wetter to help water penetrate the soil.
Patch it up
Sometimes the lawn is beyond fixing with fertiliser and you’ll need to reseed or returf, depending on the type of grass in the lawn. Seed is ideal for both small and large areas. It’s cost effective and a small box can cover quite a bit of ground. You will need patience, though, as it can take up to 12 weeks to grow lawn from seed. If you’re looking for instant results, turf is your best option. However, it may also be your only option, especially if you are looking for a certain grass type, like buffalo, Santa Ana or Wintergreen couch.
To the untrained eye, all lawns may look the same, but there are several different types, and what you have will determine how to care for it. Warm season grasses, like couch, kikuyu and buffalo, run and spread via horizontal stems (or stolons). While they can look similar, couch has fine leaves, buffalo blades are broader and kikuyu is somewhere in between. Cool season grasses, such as fescue and ryegrass, do spread (but not as much) and grow mostly as upright bunches of finely textured blades. They’re highly tolerant of shade and grow best in cool regions. While it’s possible to grow them in warmer regions, they will need additional care during the spring and summer. 60 bunnings.com.au |

The dense-growing nature of buffalo grass means it can crowd out many weeds – a bonus for lovers of lush lawns!
Seedy matters
Whether you’re seeding a large area or repairing a few patches, choosing the right seed for your lawn is key. Some warm season grasses, like couch and kikuyu, are sold in seed form as a pure or blended mix. Most cool season grass seeds are sold as a mixed blend. Pure seeds are ideal when you want to perfectly match the existing lawn. It’ll be uniform in colour, texture and growth habit. However, these come at a premium, which can be costly if you’re sowing large areas. At a lower price point, you can find couch and kikuyu blended with a cool season grass, like ryegrass. Here, the ryegrass
germinates first and acts as a kind of nurse crop, preventing weeds from growing while the couch or kikuyu germinates. Once the warm season grass establishes, it will eventually become the dominant grass type. To sow a new area or repair bare patches, the process is the same. Remove any weeds and dead plant material, including existing lawn roots. Fill any holes or shallow pockets with topsoil and rake to level. “Prepare the area using a top-quality lawn top dressing and scatter the seeds over the soil,” Melissa explains. “Coverage depends on the seed variety or blend, so read the back of the pack

Transform your outdoor space with a velvety carpet of green and some clever landscaping
Turf law
When repairing lawns with turf, you’ll need to prepare the area well before the turf arrives as it needs to be laid as soon as possible. “Remove any dead grass and roots, improve the soil with organic matter and rake it over to create a smooth, level base for your new turf,” says Melissa King. If you need to fix patches in different areas, use secateurs or a sharp spade to cut the turf to size. “Lay the turf down over the affected areas and top dress the edges to help it settle in,” says Melissa. Water
regularly over the next six weeks and avoid mowing or walking over the area while it’s establishing.
The mow down
When lawn seed has reached 5-6cm, make the first mow, but only cut off the top 2cm. This will help promote growth and prevent issues with moisture stress. Similarly, wait until turf is 6cm tall and well rooted before the first mow. Then, follow a few basic rules when mowing. “Mow regularly and only trim up to one-third of the length of the grass,” says Helena Gray of Ryobi. “This will result in healthier grass that looks more green and lush over time.” Check mower blades regularly, and sharpen or replace them every six months. “Dull or blunt blades will rip and tear the grass, which results in a less than perfect lawn,” explains Helena.

or all that we love outdoor living, those scorching late summer days can often drive us inside. The solution could be as low-tech as water. A misting system uses a curtain of ultra-fine droplets to lower the temperature as they evaporate. Rather than soaking you, it should feel like the blissful cool of a misty morning. To set one up, select a misting kit in the required length. Along with the pipe, connectors and tiny brass jets, it includes a debris filter and a brass auto-drain valve to prevent dripping when it’s off. Buy a tube cutter and tap timer if your kit doesn’t have them.

4 Use a sturdy step ladder to join up the rest of the system without securing it to the wall, rafter or beam, using clamps or tape to hold it in place. Space the connectors 600mm1000mm apart, cutting pipe to fit between them and using elbows around corners. Finish with a misting elbow at the end.
1 Screw the misting filter directly to the base of the tap timer, then screw this assembly directly onto the tap using the supplied universal tap adaptor. Insert one end of the pipe into the filter, tightening the attachment. Tip: We chose a timer that connects to wi-fi so the system can be operated via smartphone.
2 From the tap assembly, run the pipe to the wall, using the tube cutter to cut it cleanly and install a tee connector for the auto-drain valve. Note: The valve is installed lower than the jets so when turned off, excess water drains back down the pipe and out of the valve.
3 Before installing the connectors, unscrew the brass jets and set them aside on a clean surface. Tip: To fit a connector, push it over the pipe by 10mm, holding it straight and twisting slightly. Once the pipe is fitted, it can’t be removed, so use tape as a marker to avoid pushing it in too far.
5 Unscrew the brass auto-drain valve, then turn on the tap to flush the system, leaving the water running for a few minutes to ensure debris is removed to avoid clogging the tiny holes of the brass jets. Tip: Move the connected assembly so the water from the flush drains away from the house.
6 Use the supplied pipe clips to attach the pipe assembly to the wall, rafter or beam, positioning them 50mm either side of all connectors, including the auto-drain valve. Tip: The clips come with masonry nails that can be hammered into timber or brickwork, but avoid attaching to metal.
7 Reinstall the auto-drain valve and the brass jets in the connectors, twisting them on firmly. Set the tap timer to begin misting. Tip: The system is not designed to run constantly, so program it to come on when you’re outside or during the hottest part of the day.

4 To hang screwdrivers, mark out a grid between the supports for two rows of seven holes, spacing them 30mm apart. Drill right through with a 10mm bit.
1 From 184mm x 19mm pine, use a mitre saw to cut two 500mm lengths for the shelf and the backing. Use a combination square to mark a line 90mm up from the base, then position the underside of the shelf along the line.
2 To make the shelf supports, position the offcut against the shelf and backing and mark a diagonal line from the edges. Set the mitre saw to match the angle, cutting two triangular pieces to fit under the shelf. On each, mark 30mm down from the point and cut to square off the ends.
5 To hang a hammer, use a jigsaw to make a 60mm x 20mm cutout into one side of the shelf. To hang a combination square, on the opposite side, drill a series of holes together with a 10mm bit to make a 40mm-long slot. Use a chisel to remove the breakout and clean up the cuts.
6 Smooth all over with 180-grit abrasive paper, wipe with a damp cloth and apply two coats of paint, leaving to dry after each. Add a cup hook underneath to hang a tape measure. Pre-drill into the corners of the backing and secure to the wall with suitable fasteners, using a level to check the shelf is straight.

When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear. Pre-drilling holes stops screws from slipping off the mark at the beginning of the drive, and helps prevent timber from splitting or cracking. n Before drilling into walls, use a studfinder to check for wiring and pipework, and turn off the power while working. n Enlist a second pair of hands to help lift and mount the rack on the wall. n n
1 Use a mitre saw to cut 140mm shiplap pine lining into 13 boards 1200mm long. From lengths of 64mm pine, cut four 1200mm back braces. Set out the boards on a large, flat surface with the V-joint side facing down (curved edge facing up).

2 To make the panel, apply adhesive along the tongue of each board, pushing it into the groove of the next board, with the edges flush. Tip: Check the joints are a tight fit by lightly tapping the edge of each with a hammer.
3 Position the back braces, offset lengthways over the panel, equally spaced about 190mm apart and in from the edges. Use a combination countersinking bit to pre-drill through the braces, securing into each board with adhesive and 30mm galvanised screws.
Hang longhandled tools 4 To make the frame, on the lengths of 20mm corner moulding, mark each side of the panel. Set the mitre saw to 45°, positioning the marks to be on the inside of the mitres, and cutting on the offcut side of the marks to allow for the thickness of the saw blade.
5 To prevent splitting, position the frame around the panel right-side up, pre-drilling holes with a 2mm bit, 20mm along from the mitres and about 200mm apart. Apply adhesive along the inside, then secure with 30mm galvanised flathead nails.
6 Smooth all over with 180-grit abrasive paper, wipe with a damp cloth and apply two coats of paint, leaving to dry after each. Position hooks along the centre of the boards and over the braces, securing with the supplied screws.

fantastic solution to add character to a bare wall, this built-in planter box doubles as an outdoor bench seat. Stock it with fragrant plants to make the spot a treat for all the senses. It’s created by cutting and joining 200mm x 50mm sleepers at an angle, so you’ll need a circular saw and a mitre saw. We removed and cut pavers to accommodate the box. You could put it against a brick wall, as we have, or make it freestanding in a cleared area by adding two more supports for the back pieces. If using hardwood, make sure any surrounding pavers or concrete are sealed, to prevent staining from tannins that may leach out.

1 From 200mm x 50mm sleepers, use a circular saw set at 60° to cut and bevel the ends of four 950mm sides, two 1520mm fronts and two 2500mm backs. Tip: Working on a stable surface, make the first cut, measure and mark the final length from the outside corner of the bevel, then cut to size.
2 Set a mitre saw at 60° to cut one 1620mm front seat and two 960mm side seats. Set the saw straight to cut five 600mm supports. Smooth with 120-grit abrasive paper to remove breakout and splinters. With a brush, apply two coats of decking oil all over, including the cuts, leaving to dry after each.
4 To install the supports inside the box, use a post hole digger to make 250mm-deep holes at the corners and centre front and wet them down without allowing water to pool. In a wheelbarrow, mix up half a bag of concrete, following the instructions, shovelling it into the holes to 100mm deep. Insert the supports and use a level to check they are straight.
5 Tap the supports into position with a hammer, flush against the box and level with the top, with the corner supports diagonally across the front joints. From inside, pre-drill and secure two 75mm hex head screws into each sleeper. Fill the holes with remaining concrete and leave it to cure. Line the base with weed mat.
7 Place the side seat pieces against the top seat piece, position over the box with a 60mm overhang around the edges. Pre-drill holes through the top of the seat to secure into the box with hex head screws, with two screws at each join. Trim the protruding corners with a handsaw.
8 Line the inside of the box with builder’s film or plastic, cutting to fit and securing it up the sides with galvanised flat head nails. Use a brush to touch up with decking oil, checking that all cuts and exposed end-grain are saturated.

Router Bits 3 Help protect the wall from moisture damage by installing a layer of dampcourse between the brick and sleepers. Assemble the first row of the box by positioning the side and front bevels together, and the sides against the back. Pre-drill through the sides with a 5mm bit, using a hex 5 bit to secure 14G x 75mm galvanised hex head screws with seals, two screws each join. Repeat to assemble the second row.
6 Place self-adhesive waterproofing tape along the top edges of the box to create a water-resistant barrier under the seat. Tip: Overlap any ends and use scissors to snip the tape at the corners for all-over coverage. The tape helps prevent water pooling under the seat section and rotting the timber.

Likes full sun and well-drained soil, and tolerates drought once established. Be aware the white milky sap can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.
