Before you start your project determine if your surface is BARE or SEALED to select the right preparation system.
STAGE 1: CLEAN
Clean a bare surface with Bare Concrete Etch & Clean and a sealed surface with Sealed Surface Cleaner
This will prepare it for priming and ensure optimal adhesion.
Prime your surface using the correct primer from either the bare or sealed preparation system. This will reinforce the surface for optimal adhesion to the topcoat.
Using your chosen finish, apply your topcoat and allow to dry. Follow instructions on the tin for the number of coats to achieve your desired finish.

Photographing the festive lighting range is a highlight in the magazine team’s calendar. The rigging of twinkling lights and glowing creatures in a suburban front yard stopped passers-by in their tracks, with a few returning, along with the kids, for another look.
Meanwhile, out the back, a starry wonderland was unfolding, with deck spaces set up for dining and lounging – before, during and beyond the Christmas period. From the decorated letterbox to the next-level gazebo glow-up, you’ll see that even a little bit of light goes a long way (from page 15).
Why not embark on your festive journey with a solarpowered string of lights for your fence, gutters or balcony – or maybe dress a tree near the front door? We’d love to see where you end up! So please snap some photos and share them with us (see below for where to share).
And once those lights are up, the Christmas countdown is well and truly on! Make use of our clever planning ideas from experts in the entertaining field to help smooth the bumps on the path to year end (from page 25). It’s the smart way to organise your gathering, saving stress and expense, and dialling up the joy. Happy decorating!

PLANT PARENT
Rapid growth
What’s in your garden? Coleus Plant name: Anthony the Planthony Climate: Outdoors in humid Redfern, NSW. Plant parent: Louis
How long have you been caring for your plant? Two years.
Where did you get it? This coleus was propagated from a clipping of a neighbour’s flourishing plant. Where does it live? The backyard. Best feature: The red-veined leaves that reveal its leaf structure make for a truly stunning and mesmerising corner of the backyard.
Care routine: I keep the soil moist but never soaking, and usually water once every fortnight. Something that may surprise people about Anthony the Planthony: It started from a single leaf and now spans an impressive 1.8 metres.

Get set to party in style this festive season
Living in a leafy suburb means there’s always plenty of raking to be done and Cate finds these plastic scoops an essential part of her gardening kit. “These are so useful for picking up piles of leaves in autumn, fallen flowers in spring, hedge trimmings and general garden debris, to dump in the green bin or on the compost pile,” she says. “And they’re a bright colour, so are easy to spot in the shed or if I’ve left them somewhere in the garden!”
IN THE GARDEN November
Do some rose and citrus upkeep, grow fast-cropping greens, patch the lawn, plus be water smart
Encourage more blooms by regularly deadheading roses. After each flush of flowers, apply a rose-specific fertiliser and water in well.
Keep the vegie patch pumping! Sow seeds to fill gaps as you harvest. Don’t plant too densely, as warm humid weather and poor airflow can lead to fungal problems. Fast fillers include Asian greens, spinach, radish, rocket, lettuce and beetroot.
Repair bare patches in the lawn with grass seed. Choose a variety suitable for your lawn type, lightly cover with soil and keep the area moist until established. Tip: before sowing, add a layer of Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Lawn Food to the soil.
Give citrus trees a deep, weekly soak and mulch around the base, avoiding the trunk, to help retain soil moisture. Next month, apply a pelletised fertiliser as a nutrient boost ahead of the coming fruiting season.
Install an automated irrigation system to save time watering. Use a simple timer or, in multiple garden zones or watering regimens, a wi-fi setup for precise control and convenience. Check water restrictions first and adjust if needed.
Grow
After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Team members live the DIY dream!
If their personal projects are anything to go by, our Bunnings team members can’t get enough of DIY – both off and on the clock! Team member Leanne created this rustic house-number planter after seeing similar ones for sale online. Her savvy build uses salvaged hardwood and artificial plants, making it both low cost and low maintenance. No watering, ever! Leanne used three equal-sized timber lengths to create the backing panel. She edge-glued the boards together with exterior high-strength PVA and clamped them until set, cleaning off any excess adhesive. The house numbers were secured to the top board of the backing panel (you could use
the screws supplied with the numbers, or swap out with black screws for a more seamless look).
For the planter, two pieces of slightly thicker timber were glued together and then to the panel flush with the base edge, and clamped until fully cured. Holes were then drilled into the top of the planter panel for the faux greenery stems. After hanging (using fixings appropriate for the weight and the wall), Leanne popped the artificial plants into the predrilled holes. Vision accomplished!
You can view the project steps from Leanne (Bunnings Workshop community member @craftyhopper) on the Bunnings Workshop website or visit bunnings. com.au/house-number-planter.
For the past nine years, charity group Share the Dignity has brought joy to women and girls in need at Christmas time by gifting a bag containing essential toiletry items. And this month the charity is poised to reach a momentous milestone, handing out its one millionth bag donation!
“That’s one million bags that have helped provide a bit of love and light during a traumatic time,” says Rochelle Courtenay, founder and managing director of Share the Dignity (left, second from left, at the Virginia, Qld, store). During November, Australians are
invited to contribute to the ‘It’s in the Bag’ initiative, and fill a handbag or carry bag with personal essentials including toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, roll-on deodorant and period products, as well as optional extras such as lip balm, socks and a handwritten note. The next step is equally easy: drop the bag of goodies to your local Bunnings store from November 15 to December 1.
“When I needed help to make Share the Dignity’s ‘It’s in the Bag’ Christmas appeal grow, Bunnings was there, without hesitation,”

n Ensure decorations over a table hang at a safe height above candles, and never leave lit candles unattended.
n Follow manufacturer’s instructions for setting up and using your barbecue. Position barbecue on a flat, clear and well-ventilated space outdoors and never leave a lit barbecue unattended.
n Before using a gas barbecue, check the gas hose – do not use if it is crushed, kinked or cracked – and also that your LPG cylinder is in date.
n Check with your local fire service about using barbecues during restrictions such as fire bans. Keep children and pets away from barbecues and gas cylinders, and put matches and lighters out of children’s reach.

GLOWING GARAGE
Don’t neglect the garage when designing your Christmas display! Hang icicle lights using magnetic gutter clips. To create ‘twisty trees’, stand bunches of tall branches in pots with sandbags to keep them in place. Dress the pots with hessian bags, tie in place with jute twine and add light-up bows. Adorn trees and the arch over the garage door with fairy lights.

STAKE TREES
A group of twinkling trees brings a touch of magic to the lawn. To achieve this look, predrill the top (blunt) end of a hardwood stake using a 5mm bit, then drive the stake into the ground using a rubber mallet until stable. Screw a hook into the predrilled hole, then wrap the end of a length of fairy lights onto the hook. Drive a tent peg into the ground 300-400mm away from the stake, pointing outwards, loop the fairy lights around it, making sure the length is taut, then bring the lights back up to the top hook and loop around it. Repeat with more tent pegs to form a conical shape. ●

Keep in mind
■ Make sure any lighting used outside is suitable for outdoors. Any hardwired electrical fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician.
■ Ensure hanging decorations are positioned at a safe height. Our lights are set up for inspiration and photography only.
■ When installing lights high up, always use the right ladder for the job. Make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (for example both feet and one hand) on it at all times and make sure another person is nearby in case you need assistance.
■ Use a ladder rest or gutter clamp instead of leaning the ladder directly on guttering.
■ When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear.

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN
Put the joy back into the run-up to the big day with eight hosting hacks and pre-planning pointers for fuss-free fun!
Words Kylie Jackes
Bringing people together to celebrate is one of the many wonderful aspects of the festive season, and all the more enjoyable if the occasion is relaxed. We’ve rounded up tips from seasoned entertainers to smooth preparations and pave the way for a pleasurable event – for the host and the guests.
1 GET IN EARLY
As with any key event, Allison Barrett of My Perfect Party (myperfectparty.com.au) suggests planning begins six to eight weeks before your Christmas Day lunch or get-together. “Prepare a guest list and confirm the start time with everyone,” she says. “This is particularly important as often people have multiple gatherings to attend on Christmas Day.”
2 SHARE THE LOAD
A huge time and cost saver is to organise a ‘bring a dish’ spread. Stylist and avid entertainer Hayley Little (@mumlittleloves) uses a group chat to plan her feast: “We make a list of everything we want on the day, from roast meats, seafood and salads, to desserts and drinks, then everyone chooses what they would like to bring.” With fridge space at a premium, it’s also handy to have cool bags loaded with ice at the ready.
3 WRAP IT UP
“Shopping in advance is a great way to take advantage of sales, get organised and avoid last-minute panic buying,” advises Allison. If your extended family does Secret Santa for the adults, Hayley recommends setting a monetary limit to make it more budget friendly. “And wrap gifts as you buy them,” she says.
4 SET THE SPARKLE
No festive setting is complete without lighting and there are many fun, simple and stylish options to choose from, reveals Mindy Mason, Bunnings trend and product design specialist. “Illuminated inflatables are great for bringing festive cheer to any setting,” she says, while strings of lights are perfect for making any entertaining space feel Christmassy. “Whether it’s Christmas trees, stair railings, mantels or shelves, you can
“Use removable adhesive hooks to hang string lights around windows, door frames or walls without damaging surfaces”
Mindy Mason/Bunnings
use LED rechargeable, batteryoperated or solar string lights in various colours and shapes,” advises Mindy Mason. Pre-lit Christmas trees are also an effective way to bring a touch of magic and joy. “The twinkling lights and ornaments instantly transform a room or space into a festive holiday wonderland.”
5 FIND FLORAL FLOURISHES
Plants are a wonderful way to inject a seasonal splash of colour and can double as gifts. Allison Barrett suggests clustering red or white poinsettias in entertaining areas. “They provide incredible ‘wow’ factor and longevity, as they can be replanted in the garden,” she says. For Hayley Little, it’s hard to beat the aroma and classic simplicity of a pair of potted pine trees by the front door.

Use fresh flowers to create a beautiful colour-themed table display
LEFT Organise gifts and entertaining plans early on so you can enjoy the day
● For a festive feel, Hayley recommends devising a theme – this could be a striking colour combination, coastal look or woodland inspired. “You might want to paint old baubles in new shades, use foraged foliage and branches, faux flowers or have a craft day with the kids to create glittery masterpieces.”
Involve your family in the festive fun: bunnings.com. au/kids-Christmas-craft
“I like to pop them into a simple terracotta pot wrapped with a big bow, and I give small potted Wollemi pine trees as gifts,” she reveals.
6 CREATE A CENTREPIECE
If you like fresh flowers and foliage on your Christmas table, try the ‘pool noodle hack’, suggests Hayley. “It’s pure genius! You simply place a pool noodle down the centre of the table and decorate it to suit your theme,” she says. “I push sprigs of Christmas bush, holly, Christmas bells and other festive foliage into the noodle along with taper candles and baubles. It’s inexpensive and looks spectacular.”
7 PERFECT THE PLAYLIST
As holiday get-togethers are often multigenerational, Allison recommends a well-rounded mix of music, with
● Allison suggests making your own bon-bons. “Instead of those corny jokes, include personal notes inside them for everyone to read out around the table,” she says.
● To create a stylish, inexpensive table decoration, Mindy advises filling a clear glass bowl with water, adding floating tea lights and surrounding with baubles. “The lights will create a beautiful glow on the water’s surface.”
something for everyone. “Start with traditional carols, interspersed with modern upbeat Christmas songs,” she says. “Involve the kids by asking them to put together their own playlists, and ensure there’s a speaker system ready to connect to everyone’s Spotify. Another nice touch is to run a repeat of Carols By Candlelight on the TV in the background.”

ADD ESSENTIAL EXTRAS
If hosting outside, consider whether you need to include some extra shade, possibly with a gazebo. For particularly large groups, Allison suggests hiring what you need: “Contact a local hire company who can deliver tables and chairs – and even tablecloths, plates, cutlery and glasses – and who will then pick them up after the festivities.” ●

Wild at heart
An unruly mountain landscape is transformed into a charming, multi-space family garden
My personal journey towards natural gardening began in 2016 when my partner and I bought an old property in Sydney’s north, called Trincomalee, which bordered a reserve.
In the past I’d worked mainly with stylised urban gardens, focusing on spaces with strong architectural planting. The restoration of the garden and removal of weeds was just the start of a continuing journey of learning about natural gardening – and a shift in my design practice. I adopted a softer approach, introducing native planting, more informal and less structured plant layouts and, where possible, using local construction materials.
Today, working with nature, not against it, is fundamental to all aspects of my practice. From a design perspective, a natural garden will be looser in its planting style, possibly without any recognisable structure, without hedges or neat rows of plants. It will embrace more informal patterns and looser forms.

GO WITH THE FLOW
The ‘natural garden’…
● works with its location and microclimate
● uses a wide range of plants to create a feeling of wildness
● has a looser planting style, seemingly without any recognisable structures such as hedges or neat rows of plants, but it may have informal patterns and form
● adds to biodiversity and improves the health of the soil
● restores habitat and creates sanctuary for reptiles, bird life and mammals
● uses local and recycled materials and resources where possible
● has a low carbon footprint in terms of use of resources for its creation.
“The garden at the front is all about the view, the expansiveness of the bush and sky beyond“
Richard Unsworth/garden designer
MOUNTAIN GARDEN
Many years ago my brother and I jointly owned this property in the Blue Mountains. My brother now lives here with his family, so I was thrilled when the chance came to reimagine the garden for them.
It’s a humble cottage with lots of character and charm. The grounds face southwest and seem to fall into the Megalong Valley below. My brother wanted the garden to reflect the classic, contemporary nature of the home. The garden is not small, but the old style was cramped and undefined, and originally there wasn’t a level spot apart from an area in front of the house. They wanted better accessibility and use of the grounds.
We set about defining the landscape by creating practical, level spaces. We split the rectangle space into four zones, demarcating the levels with
low, unobtrusive retaining walls.
The old garage was impractical and promptly demolished, leaving the remaining floor and rear boundary wall to make the beginnings of a new outdoor dining area. A more expansive driveway was built, separated from the newly levelled lawn below by a low wall. The fourth space sits under a charming mature oak tree, which brings welcome shade in the summer.
LOCAL HEROES
The materials palette includes local mountain sandstone – much of it sourced on-site – used to create beautifully detailed stonework for the steps and retaining walls. It adds a lovely soft detail to the garden, and contrasts with the minimalist expanses of gravel and lawn. Recycled house bricks were used for the pathways and steps elsewhere, and recycled
hardwood for the pergola. A light grey gravel was used for the driveway.
Given the garden faces south, the planting is exposed to the southerlies that rage up the mountain all year round. We retained a few of the lovely, old small trees that give wonderful spring blossom, specifically a cherry blossom and a dogwood. The sweet-smelling daphne bush by the front gate was also non-negotiable. A large rhododendron was kept to help give privacy from neighbours when out on the front lawn.
To create a sense of the bush in the garden, we introduced native grasses and several species of banksia. It certainly isn’t a native garden, as my brother still wanted it to have the feeling of a traditional mountain garden with a combination of both exotic and native plantings. A simple recycled brick path leads to the
cottage front door and separates a small planting bed in front of the dining area from an expanse of gravel underneath the old tree. The long rectangular lawn leads you down to the sweet-spot destination in the garden. The lower corner, which seems to drop down into the valley, is a natural meeting space for a dawn cup of tea or to witness the sunset over the hill behind.
It was quite a shock when we first created the new areas, before the plants started to grow and naturalise them – it almost appeared a little too stark. But new gardens always take time to mature, and this one is now starting to come into its own and develop its own personality. My brother and his family love the new garden space and, when he isn’t golfing, he’s tending to his plants and encouraging them along nicely. As

a vigorous evergreen climber,
There is more than one way to create a cool, shady spot to chill out on a hot, sunny day. We have you covered – from the sun – with these ideas for homes big and small. Whether you’re after something permanent or need a renter-friendly fix, there’s a solution to suit your needs, from a fixed pergola to a portable gazebo and strategic plantings. Check out these shady partners.
BRING A BROLLY
A patio umbrella is an instant shading solution that’s ideal for temporary use. Elliot Arnup of Gale Pacific (Coolaroo outdoor shade products) says market umbrellas with a central pole are popular for their manoeuvrability. “These can work well in smaller areas like courtyards,” he says. Secure with a base to prevent tipping, especially when windy. For larger spaces, consider a cantilever umbrella, which has an adjustable canopy for maximum coverage, but can be more costly.
PERFECT A PERGOLA
For outdoor entertaining, a pergola is key. Available as an open framework or with a solid roof, it can be DIY or kit-built. Horticulturist Ash Walker (@ashwalkergardening) says what’s most important is that you’re sheltered from the hot summer sun. If your pergola lacks a solid cover, Ash recommends training climbing plants over it for added comfort and a serene atmosphere. “Deciduous climbers such as wisteria, ornamental grape and climbing roses provide summer shade and winter sun,“ he says. “Evergreens like star jasmine, clematis, bower vine and orange trumpet vine offer year-round coverage.”
“Investing in the right shade option can enhance your outdoor space. Consider where and how much cover, and if permanent or portable“
Elliot Arnup/Gale Pacific
UPGRADE TO A GAZEBO
Available in both portable and fixed styles, a gazebo offers flexibility to suit different needs and spaces. Portable ones are easy to set up and take down, perfect for temporary events or changing locations – or when the weather turns.
“Fixed gazebos, typically bolted to decks or patios, provide a stylish addition to your space,” says Elliot Arnup. “They can include features like adjustable louvres to customise shade levels, so you can dial in the perfect amount of shade.”
INSTALL AN AWNING
Unlike other shade solutions, an awning extends from a building or structure to shield you from the elements. It can be fixed or retractable — manual or motorised — and is ideal for windows, doors or patios, offering shade without taking up much space. Awnings come in a variety of sizes, colours and patterns, all easy to install on walls.
SAIL INTO COMFORT
Shade sails are perfect for large areas, and their distinctive shapes allow you to customise protection to suit the outdoor space. The ideal location is in an open spot that receives direct sunlight, and has a sufficiently strong structure for anchor points, or space to install new fixing points such as a pole. “Portable sails are easy to set up and ideal for renters, while permanent options are better
suited to homeowners,” says Elliot. “Proper installation and tensioning are essential in ensuring longevity.”
ADD NATURE’S SHADE
While plants may not offer immediate shelter, trees, climbers and screening plants can gradually transform a backyard into a lush retreat. Over time, they provide shade, enhance the hardscapes and add a touch of natural beauty. If you have enough room, Ash Walker recommends a flame tree. “This large native tree has a stunning display of red flowers in spring to summer and is deciduous when flowering,” he says. For small-to-medium gardens, try Chinese elm, Persian silk tree, crepe myrtle or ornamental prunus species like cherries, plums or almonds. ”Screening plants like bamboo, sasanqua camellia, viburnum, pittosporum, ‘Little Gem’ magnolia and citrus such as Tahitian lime can also provide shade. Plant in pots and position in areas that need shelter most,” says Ash. To decide between deciduous and evergreen trees, think about your garden’s needs and your sustainability goals. ”Deciduous trees help to manage light and energy, as they provide seasonal shade but allow light through in winter,” explains Ash. “Evergreen trees offer year-round shade, greenery and a consistent natural privacy screen.” Make sure trees are planted far enough away from buildings, fences and driveways to avoid root damage or interference with overhead wires and underground pipes.

Wisteria’s flowing blooms are spectacular
Dwarf bougainvilleas are ideal for small gardens. Use a pot at least 50cm in diameter
Raise the standard
Clip and train a summer beauty into a mini tree for a plot or large pot
WISTERIA (Wisteria spp.)
Pendulous white, pink or purple flowers adorn this vigorous deciduous climber. It grows best in subtropical, warm temperate and cold climates, and needs a full-sun position with well-drained soil. To standardise, tie the vine to a strong post and, when it reaches the top, remove the tip to encourage branching. Remove lower branches once the upper ones are well developed.
BOUGAINVILLEA (Bougainvillea spp.)
This hardy, fast-growing tropical rambler is much loved for its brightly coloured bracts ranging from pink, purple, red and orange to yellow and white. Choose a sunny, well-draining spot and train up a sturdy post with garden ties. Once it reaches the desired height, pinch out the growing tip to promote bushy growth.
GARDENIA (Gardenia jasminoides)
An evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves and fragrant flowers, gardenia thrives in cool to mild tropical gardens. Plant in slightly acidic, well-draining soil in a position that gets full sun to part shade. Taller varieties are well suited to training into standards, but smaller forms work, too. Choose the strongest stem and support with a stake, removing lower branches as it grows.
PANICLED
HYDRANGEA (Hydrangea paniculata)
The flower clusters of this species transition from white to pink as they mature. Select a young plant with a strong central leader and remove other stems. Support with a stake and remove lower growth that develops on the trunk. Prune down to two-to-three buds in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Plant in full sun to part shade and ensure soil is well-draining. ●

WHERE THE WILD THINGS AREN’T
Adding a cat or dog to your family – the right way – is relatively straightforward: adopt if you can, or buy from a registered breeder if you can’t. But the process becomes a bit more blurry when acquiring some of our more exotic pets.
Many people believe they are doing the right thing by looking after an injured bird or lizard they find in their backyard or in the bush. However, these creatures must be handed over to a registered wildlife carer to ensure they receive the correct treatment and are released back into their natural environment. That doesn’t mean you can’t have one as a pet. For reptiles and some native birds, you will need a licence from your state or territory wildlife authority, and they must only be acquired from a licensed keeper or supplier.

CALM THE FARM
Tune into your highly strung pet with these strategies for reassuring anxious dogs or cats
Does your dog have trouble settling, bark excessively or constantly dig escape tunnels? Perhaps your cat appears timid, hisses regularly or overdoes the grooming? These are all signs they might be anxious. Veterinarian Charlene Carig at Animal Welfare League NSW says while anxiety shows differently in every animal, it generally includes behaviours that seem normal at first but then happen out of context or repetitively. “Dogs may pant or pace excessively, have trouble concentrating and toilet at odd times or in inappropriate places,” she says. “Cats might not want much to do with you, be finicky eaters or spray and vocalise more than usual.”
SPOT THE TRIGGER
Identify what might be causing the anxious behaviour, and then remove it or learn how to manage your pet when it happens. “If storms frighten your dog, physical contact (massage or cuddles) or a calming weighted vest might help,” suggests Charlene. If it’s separation anxiety, keep arrivals and departures low-key – no dramatic exits!
TOOLS FOR CALM
Unwelcome or destructive behaviour may be your pet’s attempt to selfsoothe when they’re feeling anxious. “Providing an appropriate outlet can help, like a sandpit to dig in to stop a dog destroying the garden,” she says. “Giving cats access to different types of scratching posts and climbing towers may stop them damaging the furniture.” Enrichment toys, like lick mats and snuffle mats, can distract a pup from stress triggers and provide an alternative to destructive behaviour.
It’s important to provide a quiet and safe place where a pet can retreat to and find comfort and security. Put a dog crate in a peaceful corner, cover to make it dim and leave some of your unwashed clothes inside for snuggling into. A doughnut bed with raised sides or a cat cave in a low-traffic room can help anxious cats decompress.
TRAINING TIPS
Speak to your vet or a pet behaviour specialist about training techniques you can use to help teach your pet that being calm is good.
FIREWORKS FEAR
The sound, sight and smell of fireworks can be a source of terrible stress for animals and may cause panic attacks, accidental escape and injury from fleeing them. Exercise pets a few hours before fireworks are due to start, feed them and arrange for someone to be home that evening. Close doors, windows and curtains to reduce the impact of fireworks, turn a radio or television on to soften sudden loud noises from outside and make an indoor hiding place for dogs, such as a cardboard box covered with blankets. Keep cats inside.
The key is to always provide a safe space, and turn situations that make your pet feel scared or uncomfortable into something positive, by rewarding them with something they see as high value. Trying to ignore the behaviour, or desensitise an anxious pet by exposing them to high levels of the trigger, is not recommended.
“Rewarding positive behaviour can help bridge the gap between something that’s confronting to your pet but manageable for you,” says Charlene. “Your pet can then learn to predict that a good outcome will come from that trigger or situation.”

Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient ways to water your garden. With drip lines installed around your yard to deliver water directly to each plant’s roots, not a drop is wasted. Connecting a drip irrigation system to a Holman WX1
Tap Timer and Wi-Fi Hub takes it one step further, automating your watering schedule so you can set and forget.
Two’s company
In a garden where there’s a variety of plant types, such as grass, flowers,
vegetables and hedging, it can be difficult to ensure each one gets the right amount of water. Setting up multiple watering systems is simple with a Holman WX2 Dual Outlet Tap Timer and Wi-Fi Hub
The dual outlet allows you to connect two timers to one tap, so that you can have one for a drip irrigation system, for example, and another for lawn sprinklers. Both timers are then connected to the wi-fi hub, which is controlled through your smartphone. This convenient feature allows you to set up separate watering schedules and adjust them as necessary, like if a sudden shower or heatwave hits, all with a tap on the app.
In control
The Holman app monitors water usage from the tap timers, too, while soil moisture levels can be monitored through the Holman Smart Moisture Sensor. You can then adjust your systems and schedules to get the best results for your garden, while still conserving water and providing peace of mind.
Summer splash
Beat the heat and soak up some fun with these refreshing ideas
Words Kylie Jackes
Water play is a top way to keep cool in summer and, best of all, you don’t need a lot of space or a big budget to make a splash. Whether you’re renting, have one small patch of lawn or a compact courtyard, we’ve rounded up savvy ways you and your plants can enjoy the cooling effects of an array of accessories, from spas to sprinklers.
MAKE MIST
A spritz from a mister feels amazing on a hot day and is an efficient way to cool down. They work by emitting a fine mist of water droplets into the air. The water quickly evaporates, cooling the surrounding area. Georgia Liversage of Holman says they’re ideal for spaces where hanging plants and green walls can also benefit.
“Consider installing a misting kit with interchangeable fittings that gives you the flexibility to use in different configurations to suit your area,” she suggests. You can add a misting tap timer to schedule use, to help conserve power and water – check with your local council if watering restrictions apply in your area, and adjust timer settings to suit.
Child’s play
Kids love water – and with any luck the garden will get a sprinkling, too!
TAKE A DIP
Semi-permanent pools and spas are simple to install and there are designs to suit a range of budgets and spaces. Mark Rushton of Bestway says pools such as their Steel Pro and Power Steel models come with a pump and ladder and can be set up by two people in an hour. Bestway’s inflatable Lay-Z-Spa models are also quick to install and add an instant resort-style vibe. “When setting up your pool or spa, find a location at least one metre away from a boundary fence and 900mm from a climbable zone where the ground is flat and level with access to an outdoor power outlet,” recommends Mark. And remember, all pools and pool fencing must conform to your local authority’s safety regulations and guidelines.
SHOWER WITHOUT POWER
Showering outside is an easy way to rinse off post swim, freshen up after gardening and even wash the dog. If you don’t want to commit to installation, consider solar options that connect to a garden hose and pair with a stand. There are also ultra-portable designs that can be hung up almost anywhere. But if you
“A misting system can reduce the temperature by up to 10 degrees“
Georgia Liversage/Holman
are thinking about a more permanent set-up, check regulations (for example drainage) with your local authority.
SOAK UP THE GOOD TIMES
Turn your backyard into a water park so the kids can cool down and burn off energy at the same time. There are some terrific inflatable off-the-shelf options, including double or triple waterslides and models with slides, climbing walls and water guns.
Sprinklers can also enhance backyard fun while giving it a good drench. “The Holman three arm sprinkler with heavy-duty weight base or the 17 nozzle oscillating sprinkler are great for under the trampoline, as they have a wide spray radius with an upward direction,” says Georgia Liversage. “A soaker hose run along a paddle pool or attached to the top of a trampoline also provides a great immersive experience.” Watering with a can or a hose can be fun for kids, too. Give littlies their own super-cute watering can, while bigger kids can wield a hose. A spray gun with trigger action is another good option, says Georgia. “This will maximise fun and avoid wastage, as when it’s not held down the water will stop flowing.”
BE WATER WISE
Schedule water play for the early morning and early evening, when the soil can best soak it up. When finished, bucket paddle pool water onto plants and lawn. You may even consider installing a rainwater tank. ●

Don’t let burglars ruin your festive fun! Put measures in place –such as security cameras and a modern door lock – ready for the holidays
SECURITY DETAIL
Be on the safe side with these expert tips to help protect your property
Words Jane Parbury
Gifts under the tree, deliveries on the doorstep, windows open to cooling breezes and homes left empty thanks to holidays away can all attract unwelcome visitors. And, while the trend of residential break-ins has been declining over the past 14 years*, home burglaries are still a reality. But there are many steps – big and small – you can take to deter trespassers, help guard against intruders and keep your home and possessions safe.
HIDE IT AWAY
Most thefts are crimes of opportunity – parcels, bikes left out and unlocked garages, says Steve Ross of insurance brokers Austbrokers (abcitystate.com. au). “Securing all valuable items either inside the property or out of plain sight can minimise this,” he says. Busy in the backyard? Ensure the front door is locked and windows are secured. It only takes a few minutes for a thief to nip inside and help themselves to your phone or wallet. Don’t keep your car or house keys in the usual dish on the hall table – tuck them away out of sight, and find a clever place to stash valuables like cash and jewellery. Make leaving spare keys under a plant pot a thing of the past – use a hidden key safe instead or switch to keyless entry.
UP YOUR GAME
Take a look at your home and consider how you might gain access if you lost your keys – it’s a great way to identify vulnerable spots. A strong front door with a heavy-duty lock like a deadbolt can be a good burglar deterrent; just make sure it can be opened easily from the inside in case of fire. Keeping doors, windows, fences and side access gates in good repair should be high on your security checklist, too. Fit window locks, consider installing security screens and trim tree branches and shrubs that could assist entry to an upper window, or provide a hiding place. Lock away in the shed or garage any tools or items such as ladders that
might assist a break-in and invest in a lockable letterbox – stolen mail can lead to identity theft. Ensure that valuables in the yard are out of sight and preferably locked away in a shed or storage area, says Steve Swinfield of Master Lock: “Ideally, the storage area and/or valuable items should be secured by high-quality security devices including padlocks, bike locks, cables, chains and hasps and staples.”
Crunchy gravel around the house can deliver an audible alert that someone is approaching – as can a dog! But remember that a larger pet door can also provide access to a two-legged intruder, so make sure it is securable.
TURN TO TECH
Smart fittings can be a useful tool in your home security armoury. Mark Fletcher at Ring says integrating a smart security set-up into your home ecosystem is the best and most convenient way to help protect what you care about most. Smart devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with attributes such as remote access and motion detection that can tell the difference between an animal or human-sized intruder. Security cameras are an easy DIY addition, says the team at Grid Connect: “Rechargeable weatherresistant cameras ensure you can
keep an eye on what is happening around your property. For renters, positioning a camera inside on a windowsill can provide a view of outside the home, without having to contact a property manager. A smart door lock is also a great way to increase security.”
As a deterrent to intruders, outdoor lighting can be underrated, says Tegan Hamilton, Bunnings national security and general hardware buyer. “Lighting can be low cost or include options with cameras,” she says.
REDIRECT DELIVERIES
Pilfering parcels off the doorstep has become popular with opportunistic thieves. Avoid this by having packages delivered to a post office but, if they’re arriving at home, be clear with the delivery instructions – where or if the parcel can be left and if you require it to be signed for. Parcels sitting on the doorstep for days are a clear sign no-one’s at home. “I recommend adjusting or postponing subscriptions and deliveries so it doesn’t appear your home is unoccupied for any length of time,” says Mark Fletcher. “If unexpected deliveries occur, a video doorbell is an easy way to instruct the delivery person to put the package in a secure location.” Check out the range of secure parcel letterboxes at Bunnings. Installation can be arranged at the Special Orders Desk‡
CREATE AN ILLUSION
Empty homes can be targets for break and enter so, if you can’t get a reliable friend or relative to house-sit, think about how to make your home look occupied when you’re travelling. An obvious precaution before you leave is to walk through the house and

ensure all windows and doors are securely locked. Make arrangements for your yard to be kept neat and tidy, suggests Steve Swinfield. “And ask a neighbour to regularly check the property and collect emptied bins and any mail,” he says. Importantly, don’t announce travel plans on social media or post travel stories while away.
GET COVERED
There are usually more goodies to be grabbed around holiday time, thanks to Santa, so if the worst happens, make sure your insurance will cover any losses. “Most people are inadequately insured at any given time,” warns Steve Ross. Planning to travel? “Most policies have a 60-day vacancy clause, meaning the property cannot be unoccupied for more than 60 continuous days. In some cases, it can be as low as 30 days.” ●

HEAT CHEAT SHEET
Keep your cool with our summer school on how to make interiors heatproof
Words Jane Parbury
1BLOW OVER
Fans cool by creating a breeze that travels over your skin as you perspire. Fixed versions, like ceiling fans, need to be installed by a licensed electrician, but portable models plug in – great if you’re renting. Seek advice on the right fan for your room size. Fans are relatively cost efficient to run and, if combined with aircon, can boost the effectiveness of both, advises Bunnings national electrical buyer John Campbell. “Use a ceiling fan to distribute cool air more evenly, allowing you to set your airconditioner’s thermostat a few degrees higher without sacrificing comfort,” he says.
2COOL RUNNINGS
Airconditioners reduce the actual temperature of the air in the room. Fixed models, including reverse-cycle that also heats in winter, need to be professionally installed and maintained. “Replace or clean your air filter every one to three months for efficient airflow,” says John. “Clean the coils annually, check and clear the drain line, and inspect ductwork for leaks. Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris and schedule a professional tune-up yearly.” Portable models are handy for single rooms, but need to be close to a window for venting and a power point (don’t use an extension cord).
3
HEAT BARRIER
Insulation reduces the transfer of heat through exterior structural surfaces like walls and ceilings, helping
to keep your interiors cooler in summer. Its performance is measured in R value, and the rating suitable for your home varies, depending on the climate where you live and how it is constructed Certain insulation types are best installed when building or renovating, and by professionals. Others, such as some bulk insulation, can be DIY fitted if you have good access to the area, like a roof space. Also consider the underfloor, says the team at Knauf Insulation: “Installing insulation that has a wind-wash barrier can prevent losing up to 20 per cent of heat and cold through draughty floors.”*
4
GLASS HOUSES
Double or triple-glazed windows work better than standard single glazing to reduce heat gain (or loss). Consult the Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS), which gives new windows a U value that measures their heat flow, incorporating components like the glazing and framing. But if you live in a hot region, also consider the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), which measures how the window performs when hit by sunlight. A low-tech solution is to install curtains and/or close-fitting blinds, and keep them shut against the heat of the
day. As the day cools, open windows to allow any cross breezes to waft the heat out of your home.
5
OUTSIDE IN
External blinds, awnings, louvres and shutters all keep direct sun from hitting windows, working better than indoor window coverings as the heat doesn’t get the chance to enter. For natural shade – and if you don’t live in a bushfire-prone area, where you shouldn’t plant too close to the house – consider deciduous trees. In summer they deliver a leafy screen, while in winter bare branches admit some sun for light and warmth.
SAFETY FIRST
The summer season can also bring fire hazards, so be prepared.
● Check barbecue gas fittings for damage, and keep surfaces fat-free to prevent flare-ups. Don’t operate near flammable materials and never leave lit barbies unattended.
● Ensure fairy-light cords have no damage, don’t overload sockets or powerboards and turn off at night.
● Opt for battery-powered tea lights or candles instead of flame ones.
● Inspect all smoke alarms to make sure they are in full working order.

MAKE THE CUT
Mower know-how will save you time and money. Start with the right model, then keep it in good nick
Words Mitchell Mclean
PUSH MOWERS
This type is best suited to small areas of lawn. Manual models rely on muscle power to spin the blades, but there are also battery-powered options. Both types come with a grass cutter, are low maintenance and simple to operate.
PETROL MOWERS
Run by an engine, petrol mowers are suitable for medium-to-large lawns. They offer extra power and mobility but require more maintenance due to their complex mechanics.
ELECTRIC MOWERS
Powered by either a corded or battery-operated motor, electric mowers are quieter and more eco-friendly than petrol mowers and are ideal for small-to-medium lawns.
Maintenance tips
● Regularly sharpen the blades with a grindstone to ensure a clean cut and reduce strain on the mower.
● Remove grass clippings and debris after use to keep the mower in good condition and store it in a dry location to prevent rust.
● Frequently inspect the mower for loose bolts or nuts, especially around the handle and blade assembly. Tighten them as needed to ensure the machine operates safely and efficiently.
Maintenance tips
● Check the oil and oil level regularly, and change it when it becomes dirty or low. Clean oil prevents engine wear and keeps the mower running smoothly.
● Inspect the spark plug periodically and replace if necessary. A clean spark plug ensures efficient engine starting and combustion.
● Clean air filters regularly to allow proper airflow to the engine. If the air filter is torn or damaged, replace it to prevent engine damage.
Maintenance tips
● For corded models, check the cord regularly for damage or wear and replace it if necessary to avoid safety hazards.
● For battery-operated models, ensure the battery is charged and stored properly, and keep battery contacts clean for optimal performance.
● Each time you use the mower, clean the underside afterwards to prevent grass build-up, which can affect the cutting performance of the machine.
1
Regular mowing prevents overgrowth, reducing your mower’s workload and saving you from costly repairs.
2 Sharpen or replace mower blades annually. They’ll cut grass more efficiently, reducing the strain on the engine and extending the mower’s lifespan.
3
Only buy as much fuel as you need for the season. ‘Stale’ petrol can damage your mower’s engine.

Keep in mind…
■ Always wear suitable protective equipment, especially gloves (mower blades are sharp).
■ Before working on a petrol mower, check the engine is cold, disconnect the spark plug and ensure the throttle is in the ‘off’ position. Drain the mower of fuel and oil to avoid spills if mower needs to be tipped on its side.

MUSTHAVE GARDEN TOOLS
Here’s what you need to power through your outdoor jobs and get the yard in shape for a summer of relaxing and entertaining
Words Mitchell Mclean
GARDEN SHREDDER
A game changer when it comes to managing waste from outdoor clean-ups, a garden shredder can reduce branches, leaves and green material into manageable pieces. Look for a shredder that can handle your specific debris types, such as palm fronds or hardwood branches. Always wear gloves, goggles and sturdy footwear when using, and turn the shredder off to clean the blades and check for lodged debris.
GRASS TRIMMER
Ideal for maintaining edges and trimming hard-to-reach areas, a cordless trimmer is great for large yards or when outdoor power points aren’t available. When selecting a model, consider the battery life and whether you’ll need an additional battery for extended use. Before starting, ensure the battery is fully charged and keep your hands away from the cutting area. Once finished, clean off clippings from the head and shaft.
BLADED EDGER
To achieve clean, defined edges along lawns, paths and garden beds, a bladed lawn edger is the way to go. Cordless models offer convenience and efficient cutting performance. When using an edger, ensure the blade is sharp and in good condition. Wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety glasses, to avoid injury from debris. After use, clean the blade and check for any damage. Store in a dry, secure place to extend its lifespan.
LEAF BLOWER

GOOD SAVE!
1 Charge tools during off-peak hours to save on energy costs.
2
Opt for electric or battery-powered tools over petrol-powered, as they are not only quieter but also often lighter and easier to maintain.
3
Dispose of old tools and batteries by taking them to a recycling facility or putting batteries in the collection unit at your local Bunnings store.
Clearing leaves, grass clippings and debris is a breeze with a leaf blower. Electric models offer quieter operation than petrol, making them more neighbour friendly. Blowers come with various features, with some focusing on high air volume to quickly move big amounts of debris, while others provide more precision for tight areas. Some also offer vacuum and mulching functions. After each use, clear any remaining leaves or clippings from the blower.
PRUNING CHAINSAW
A smaller chainsaw designed for pruning is fantastic for maintaining trees and shrubs. Find a model that is easy to handle, with powerful cutting and safety features such as chain brakes and low-kickback bars. Before using the saw, ensure the battery is fully charged and check the chain tension. Wear protective gear including gloves and safety glasses when operating. Clean the chainsaw thoroughly after use, and store it in a dry, cool place away from children. ●
A POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP
Party time!
Do the prep work now to get your home ready for a stellar season of entertaining
Words Shelley Tustin
The time has come to dust off the deck! An iconic Aussie summer is lived almost entirely outdoors, the backyard frequently filled with mates and rellies. Set up your space for parties and impromptu barbecues with these easy and budget-friendly tips.
SORT THE FURNITURE
First check all pieces for broken parts or weaknesses. Wash off dust, dirt and mould, then lightly sand timber items and apply a coat of outdoor furniture oil. Scrub metal furniture with a non-abrasive cleaning solution and use equal parts water and white vinegar on tough stains or oxidised aluminium. Synthetic wicker comes up beautifully with a gentle scrub and mild detergent, while natural wicker that has been exposed to the elements will need more detailed care – clean and thoroughly dry, sand gently and coat with equal parts raw linseed oil and mineral turps.
Rearrange furniture to create conversation zones, with space for circulation (1.5 metres for walkways, more around
a barbecue, for safety). Think about where people are drawn to, suggests stylist Fiona Gould (fionagould.com.au).
“Outdoor kitchens are always a popular hang-out spot, so a small lounging area nearby is a great idea,” she says. Summer parties can stretch your backyard’s capacity. To squeeze in more people, opt for bench seats or narrow dining chairs. As a contingency, store folding chairs in the shed or have indoor chairs that can be taken outside. “Keep a couple of stools in your outdoor area which double as side tables,” advises Fiona. “They’re handy for squeezing a few more people around a dining table or in a lounge area.”
BRIGHTEN UP
Assess your garden lighting scheme and make tweaks for safety (such as along steps) and atmosphere. “Multiple sources of ambient lighting – such as pendants, fairy lights and lanterns – can create a magic outdoor space after sunset,” says Fiona. Battery-powered candles cast a flickering glow and are a fire-safe option for tabletops.
GET SET TO SETTLE IN
For a cosy living-room vibe, layer up your outdoor setting with soft furnishings. “Think of outdoor spaces as extensions of your interiors and make them feel welcoming and comfy,” suggests Fiona Gould. “Rugs, cushions, throws, pots and vases transform outdoor spaces into beautiful retreats.”
BEST FACE FORWARD
By winter’s end exterior surfaces are often grimy, but a quick spring clean will improve your guests’ first impression. Wash windows so they sparkle and let more light in. Use a pressure washer on the facade to slough off unwanted winter layers. Candice Cooke of Kärcher recommends starting with an appropriate detergent (like Kärcher Stone & Facade Cleaner).
“Allow the detergent to get to work and then rinse off, starting with low-medium pressure setting on the spray lance, and gradually increase the pressure if necessary,” she says. Decks, pavers and paths are likely just as grubby after winter, so give them a blast too. “For decks, use a power scrubber or surface cleaner attachment to evenly distribute the pressure and give best results,” says Candice. Whatever type of surface you’re pressure washing, remember to test an inconspicuous area first.
PREP THE GRILL
Put the barbecue on your pre-season cleaning list. Andrew Di Bartolo of Char-Griller warns this is a safety issue as much as a hygiene one; built-up debris and grease may cause flareups, as well as affect the performance of your barbecue.
“The pre-season clean should be more comprehensive than the regular post-barbecue scrub”

‘Spark’
Check for damage, rust and wear. “Remove the grates and soak in warm, soapy water. Use a stiff brush or grill cleaner to scrub off stubborn grease and residue. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reassembling,” advises Andrew. Clean the burners on gas barbecues. “Ensure that the gas ports are clear of any blockages,” instructs Andrew. “A thin wire or paper clip can be used to clean out the ports.” Then let the barbecue run on high heat to burn off any residue. “Check that all burners are working correctly and that the heat is evenly distributed,” he says.
PLANT SUMMER COLOUR
For bright and cheery outdoor decoration, flowers are the best embellishments! Fill garden beds, pots and window boxes with vibrant colour, and consider using potted flowers as a semi-permanent outdoor table centrepiece.
STYLE A WELCOMING HOME
“The entryway is the very first impression guests will have of your home so pay special attention to it,” says Fiona. “Think about storage to hide clutter and a surface for decorative accessories, or a scented candle to instantly set the mood.” Consider other spaces where your guests will spend time. “Give your powder room special touches, like a self-care station set up on a tray with beautiful soaps and hand creams, and foliage picked from the yard,” she adds. ●

Nothing gets tastebuds tingling quite like fragrant smoke wafting from a barbie. Whether in your backyard, at a campsite or hosting a park picnic, pack flavour into your grill dishes with simple spice rubs and off-the shelf sauces. Here are three of our favourite recipes to try at your next alfresco gathering.
No matter where you live, convenience counts – and there are barbecues to fit on a balcony, portable options for camping or large models to incorporate into a spacious outdoor kitchen.
Paul Kosky from Blackstone says serious barbecuers love gas: “Heat is very direct and can be controlled with ease, offering instant adaptability to cook a variety of food. Thick cold-rolled steel cooking surfaces provide a restaurant kitchen-like experience.” Best of all? “They’re easy to clean and maintain, and always ready to go!”
Newer barbecues feature an impressive array of technology for precision cooking, says Andrew Di Bartolo at Char-Griller. “Some come equipped with a bluetooth interface featuring interconnectivity with smart thermometers, so you can monitor and adjust settings directly from your phone,” he explains. Texas smoky barbecue ribs SERVES 4
n 2 racks (1.5kg) pork ribs
n 1 onion, quartered
Roasted baby sweet potatoes with dill ranch dressing
SERVES 6
n 1kg small sweet potatoes
n 40g Texas BBQ rub or smoky spice mix
n 4 garlic cloves, crushed
n 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for cooking
n ¾ cup smoky barbecue sauce
n 1/3 cup Buffalo wing sauce
1 Bring a stock pot of water to the boil over high heat. Remove the thin membrane from the back of each rack of ribs. Add ribs and onion to the pot and simmer for 40 minutes.
2 Drain the ribs, discarding the onion. Place the ribs on a plate to set aside to cool. Sprinkle both sides of the ribs with rub or spice mix and garlic, and massage into the meat. Drizzle with oil.
3 Preheat a barbecue to medium. Cook the ribs on the hotplate with the lid down for 5 minutes each side or until starting to colour.
4 Combine barbecue sauce, wing sauce and ¼ cup water in a bowl. Brush both sides of the ribs with the mixture. Cook on the hotplate with lid down, basting and drizzling with extra oil halfway through cooking, for 5-7 minutes each side or until charred.
5 Transfer ribs to a foil tray. Cover with foil and set aside for 10 minutes, then cut into individual ribs. Bring remaining sauce to the boil in a saucepan over high heat. Pour over ribs and toss to coat. Serve on a platter.
TIP A low and slow cook is usually the approach for ribs, to soften and tenderise the meat, says Paul Kosky. But if you don’t have the traditional 4+ hours to do them on a charcoal smoker or wood-pellet grill, this recipe is a super-quick alternative.
n 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing
n 2 garlic cloves, crushed
n 1 tsp sea-salt flakes
n Crunchy chickpea snacks (from the health-food section in supermarkets)
DILL RANCH DRESSING
n ½ cup buttermilk or Greek yoghurt
n 1/3 cup whole egg mayonnaise
n 1 tbsp lime juice
n 1 tbsp chopped dill
n 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve
n Habanero hot sauce or sriracha, to taste
1 Scrub the sweet potatoes under cold water and pat dry. Cut into 3cm wedges. Put in a large bowl with the oil, garlic and salt and toss to combine.
2 Heat the barbecue to medium-low. Put the wedges on the hotplate and cook for 15-20 minutes with the lid down until tender and charred, brushing with oil and turning halfway through cooking.
3 To make the dill ranch dressing, combine the buttermilk, mayonnaise, lime juice, dill and chives in a blender and blend until smooth. Add hot sauce to taste and blend.
4 Arrange wedges on a serving platter and drizzle with dressing. Sprinkle with extra chives and chickpeas and serve with the remaining dressing on the side.
TIP Cut the sweet potato into uniform sizes and barbecue in smaller batches to prevent them steaming instead of grilling, notes Paul. Keep watch to prevent burning.
Butterflied harissa chicken SERVES 4
n 1.5kg fresh chicken
n 1 tbsp dry harissa seasoning
n 2 tsp chopped thyme
n 2 garlic cloves, crushed
n 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest
n 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for cooking
n 1 pomegranate
n 4 baby cucumbers
n 100g mixed salad leaves
n 4 radishes, thinly sliced
HERB OIL
n 1 cup loosely packed parsley leaves
n 1 tbsp thyme leaves
n 1/3 cup olive oil
1 Wash and pat chicken dry with paper towel. Place chicken on a chopping board, breast-side down, with legs towards you. Using kitchen shears, cut along either side of the backbone and discard it. Turn over and use your hand to push down on the chest bone to flatten.
2 Combine harissa, thyme, garlic, lemon zest and oil. Rub three-quarters of the marinade all over the chicken. Place in fridge or in a container on ice until ready to barbecue. Reserve remaining marinade for basting.
3 To make the herb oil, combine all ingredients in a food processor. Process until finely chopped. Keep in a jar in a cool place.
4 Preheat a hooded barbecue to mediumlow. Place chicken, breast side-up, on barbecue grill. Close lid and cook for 45 minutes, basting with remaining marinade after 35 minutes. Slash skin on top of the chicken three times with a knife. Drizzle with extra oil. Use tongs to turn chicken over. Cook, with lid down, for a further 15 minutes or until cooked through. Remove and rest for 5 minutes.
5 Break pomegranate into pieces and remove some of the seeds from some pieces. Use a vegetable peeler to slice cucumbers into ribbons. Combine leaves, cucumber, radish and pomegranate seeds in a bowl. Arrange salad on a serving platter with chicken.
6 Place remaining pieces of pomegranate around the chicken. Drizzle the chicken with herb oil and serve.
TIP To grill large cuts like roasts or a whole chicken to perfection, a bluetooth or instant-read thermometer with probes is essential, says Andrew Di Bartolo. ●

BLING RINGS
Add sparkle with a chic wreath trio
1 ATTACH FOLIAGE
Tie artificial sprigs of wattle to a bamboo ring using jute twine. This will be the centre base of the wreath. Wind the sprigs up around each side of the ring, extending them beyond the ring and leaving the centre top clear. Repeat for remaining rings.
SECURE GUMNUTS
Trim the stems off the gumnuts and position at centre base of each ring, pointing down. Tie gumnuts to the rings using twine, wrapping it around at least 12 times, tying off and trimming the ends at the back.
HANG WREATH
Cut a length of twine to 600mm and two lengths to 400mm. Fold 600mm length in half, bring looped end over the ring, take tails through and pull taut, then tie off the ends to make a hanger. Repeat with 400mm lengths for other wreaths. Lay out the wreaths and, when happy with the arrangement, measure and mark the wall to attach hooks to hang them.
ADD LIGHTS
Starting with one of the top wreaths, wind the wire lights around ring, then take it over to an adjacent wreath, wind it around and take down to the remaining wreath and repeat. Tuck battery pack out of sight (such as behind a chair below). ●

Tools & materials
n Safety equipment (eye and ear protection, mask, gloves)
n Tape measure and pencil
n Handsaw
n 240-grit abrasive paper
n Paintbrush
n Quick-grip clamps
n Drill and 11mm bit
n Scissors
n Hammer
n Cutting pliers
n Lint-free cloth
n 25mm x 2.4m
Tasmanian oak dowel
n 2-in-1 stain and varnish
n 10mm marine-grade rope
n Cable ties
n 20mm galvanised clout nails
n Polyurethane adhesive
Keep in mind…
■ When staining and drilling, always wear safety equipment (eye and ear protection, mask and gloves) and ensure the room is well ventilated.
■ Keep all stain and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
STEP 1: CUT, STAIN AND VARNISH
1 Measure and mark dowel at 600mm intervals, then cut four rails to length with a handsaw. Sand rails with 240-grit abrasive paper. Apply stain to rails with a paintbrush and leave to dry. Lightly sand, then apply a second coat and leave to dry.
STEP 3: CREATE HANGER
3 Cut a 4m length of rope and hang with the halfway point over a wall hook. Feed rope ends through holes in a rail, leaving a 300mm drop (the distance from the hanger top to the rail centre). Secure a cable tie around the ropes underneath the rail to hold in place.
STEP 2: DRILL HOLES
2 Clamp each rail to the workbench and mark 30mm from the ends. Drill holes using an 11mm drill bit. Tip: To help prevent splitting, drill both holes halfway, unclamp, turn over and clamp again to finish the holes from the other side.
STEP 4: THREAD ROPE
4 Thread the rope ends through the remaining rails, spaced at 300mm between each rail, securing with cable ties as you go. Tie off the rope with double knots under the base rail, then trim to leave 70mm tails. Fray the ends to form tassels.
STEP 5: SECURE RAILS
STEP 6: SEAL HOLES
6 Hang ladder on a wall hook. To seal the holes in the dowel, apply adhesive around the top of each hole. It will seep down and create a moisture barrier. Wipe off excess with a lint-free cloth. Let cure.
