Japanese maple
Some varieties, like ‘Dissectum Crimsonwave’ and ‘Atropurpureum’, hold their burgundy-wine foliage most of the year, while ‘Sango Kaku’ and ‘Senkaki’ change their leaf colours with the seasons. Plant in a partly shaded position, shielded from hot afternoon sun, and in soil improved with organic matter.

This deciduous tree has trusses of vibrant red, pink, purple or white blooms in summer, then a dazzling autumnal display. Its russet-toned leaves fall to reveal decoratively mottled bark, before foliage brings it back to life in spring, a backdrop for the summer floral show.
