Welcome
A word from our editor Interest rates may be at an all-time low, but that doesn’t mean that we suddenly all have bags of cash to splash, even when it comes to things such as enjoying your home. We really hope you’ll be inspired by the work of the talented teams behind the new Bunnings home makeover series, which
you can find on Bunnings’ YouTube channel; the teams were challenged to make some seriously stylish changes to the rooms they were allocated, while keeping an eye on a pretty strict budget. See the first rooms (along with how they did it) from page 49. We’re also showcasing some of the fabulous new outdoor furniture available now in store; have a look at our dreamy Italian Riviera-flavoured feature on page 11. Plus, we’re bringing Christmas home with a whole mass of stunning festive lighting (love those flamingoes!) and an extensive gift guide, with presents at every price point, that we hope will help you check off every family member and friend on your list. Enjoy the issue!
MAKEOVER MAGIC
BUNNINGS HOUSE MAKEOVER
The Bunnings makeover video series kicked off with a bang last month, featuring the room-by-room transformation of a small home from drab to drop-dead gorgeous. The Bunnings crew has teamed up with some of our favourite style creators, who have each tackled an area of the home, applying their savvy ideas and budget-wise solutions to revamp each space. The video episodes, released on the Bunnings website and YouTube channel, will reveal a different room week by week. This month, the room reveals will include those below.

Having tackled their own reno of a Christchurch villa, Shayden and Georgia of Moochstyle are well equipped to take on the challenge of the ensuite and main bathroom. Will they be able to deliver big changes on a small budget? And will they inject the spaces with their distinct Kiwi style? @moochstyle
DIY pro and mum Poppy Lee knows good style and isn’t afraid to get crafty, so we can’t wait to see what she creates in the kids’ bedroom. With two active little ones of her own, we’re predicting a functional space with a strong sense of fun! @hellopoppylee

Make your alfresco setting unique by customising a table covering to suit your scheme
Tip To protect your tablecloth, apply a sealer such as Mod Podge once the paint has dried. After use, wipe the tablecloth clean with a damp cloth (don’t soak or machine-wash)
Handpainted tablecloth What you need Plastic-backed canvas drop sheet (larger than your table) Measuring tape Pen Scissors 24mm and 48mm-wide painter’s tape Three 60mm mini foam rollers and trays Sample pots tinted in chosen colours (we used Dulux Harpoon and Taubmans Red Glow and Silky Blue) Method Measure the table width and length, adding 40mm to both measurements to allow for a 20mm hang on all sides. Position the drop sheet on a flat surface, mark out the measurements and cut with scissors. Position parallel rows of masking tape along the drop sheet, alternating the widths between them from 10mm to 40mm. Use a different roller for each colour to lightly apply paint to the widths. Leave to dry, then remove the tape to reveal neat stripes.

HIDDEN HELPER: JAMES HARDIE VILLABOARD™
HIDDEN HELPER: JAMES HARDIE SECURA™
Protect walls and floors from moisture damage
What lies beneath Lay the right foundations for a bathroom that will go the distance, with James Hardie products for lining floors and walls
E
veryone loves a beautiful bathroom, but beyond striking floor tiles, elegant subways and stunning wet zones, there’s one factor that’s more important than everything else, and that’s the waterproofing. Rotten foundations caused by leaks are one of the main reasons behind the average bathroom renovation but, if you get the basics right, the only thing that will make you wish you could start all over again are those ‘on trend’ tiles you chose in a hurry. It goes without saying that the shower zone will need a waterproof membrane,
but you also need to make sure the rest of your bathroom floor can resist splashes. Made from durable fibre cement, James Hardie Secura™ interior flooring has a moisture-resistant sealer on all sides, with one side specifically engineered to reinforce the water-resistant qualities of a fully tiled bathroom floor. Beyond the bathroom, Secura flooring is a robust choice for dry areas of the home, like a living room or bedroom. The reversible design makes it suitable for multiple applications – tiles on one side, which includes a sealant gap, and vinyl or carpet
on the other side, where the tongue and groove joint is gapless. Let’s not forget the bathroom walls which, in a humid environment, present their own set of challenges. James Hardie Villaboard™ wall lining is the clever pick over standard plasterboard here. Its heavy duty construction not only ensures that it will resist damage from moisture, but it also has superior tensile strength – up to 75 per cent greater than wet area plasterboard – which basically means that once your gorgeous new wall tiles are set in place, they’ll stay there.
Split the cost of whatever you need. Except the sausage sizzle.

ussies love summer, and backyard barbies and relaxing outdoors are the best ways to embrace the heat. But while some might like it hot, it can get uncomfortable outside at certain times of the day. Instead of retreating inside, make life a little cooler outdoors by throwing shade on your overcooked garden. Cool candidates You can introduce shade into the garden either with structures (see box, opposite) or plants. Trees or climbers are available in various sizes, densities and shapes. “There are three key considerations: size, climate and species suitability for your specific location,” says horticulturist Steve Falcioni, marketing manager at OCP’s Eco-Organic Garden. “Always go for a tree or climber that will still fit in its spot when fully grown and will thrive in your environment – this ensures healthy growth and less chance of pest and disease problems. Also, take

Chan (instagram.com/plant. jungle). “Look for deciduous trees with a spreading canopy and plant them on the western side of your home to provide maximum summertime shade.” Deciduous climbers grown over a gazebo or pergola, such as ornamental grapevines or wisteria, bring shade in the warmer weather and provide seasonal interest, too. For year-round shade (and privacy), Alan suggests using

SOFT VERSUS HARD Hard elements like pergolas and roller shades work well (see our story on page 32 for ideas), but used on their own they can absorb heat and raise the ambient temperature around your home. The best solution to beat the heat is to balance out the hard surfaces with shade-providing trees and climbers. Steve says, “There are many reasons to choose trees for shade over physical structures, but the main reason is that humans simply like trees.” Plus, the air around a tree is naturally cooler – when water is released from the leaves throughout the day, it has a cooling effect on the surrounding air. “A majestic tree adds an element of beauty that is difficult to achieve any other way,” adds Steve. “They also provide valuable habitat for wildlife.” dense, evergreen varieties like star jasmine or bower vine. “These climbers are adaptable and hardy – they can be grown straight in garden beds or in pots with a quality potting mix.” Branch out To make the most of a shade tree, look for broad-reaching
branches and dense foliage. “Trees with a gorgeous spreading habit and large leaves will cast the deepest shade, whereas trees with narrow upright growth or thin leaves will cast fairly light shade,” explains Steve. Maples, flowering gums (Corymbia sp.), tulipwood and golden ash are
ideal shade trees. You want to consider their placement, too, especially if they can offer more than just shade. Can they double as feature planting along a path or fence, especially if you want to show off seasonal foliage or a striking architectural shape? than one – a lone tree may not always be the solution. “When choosing climbers, you need to be aware of how they climb so you can provide the right support for these high achievers,” says Alan (see next page). “Some take longer to establish than others, so if you’re looking for fast shade, } bunnings | bunnings.com.au

CLIMBERS Keep climbing plants tidy by training them up support structures. Depending on the look you’re going for, you can use a lattice, tension wire trellis kits, bamboo poles or garden stakes. “One of the easiest ways to train climbing plants is with a lattice,” says Alan Chan. “They’re cost-effective, easy to install and versatile.” Climbers use a variety of techniques to navigate their way up and around the garden, so it’s important to understand how they climb, as this will determine the type of support structure to use.

Climbing rose
Scramblers like bougainvilleas and climbing roses have long, flexible stems. They’re unable to climb on their own, although their thorns can help them grab onto structures or neighbouring stems. Espalier them against a wall with tension wire or train over an arbour or pergola, securing with string or garden wire.
a strong, healthy root system and ensure your tree stays happy for years to come. In winter, tidy up deciduous trees by removing dead, criss-crossing or broken branches. If necessary, trim limbs back to keep the tree at a manageable or desired size. Prune evergreen trees in early autumn or spring, following the branching pattern to maintain the natural shape.
Passionfruit
Climbers with tendrils have thin, wiry structures that extend out looking for something to latch onto. Once they grab, the tendril curls around, forming a coil. Passionfruit, sweet peas and grapevines cling by tendrils, so train them to climb along chain between posts, wire mesh, a thin lattice framework or bamboo poles.

Clematis
Twining plants, like clematis and jasmine, have flexible stems that twist and curl around most structures. Twine them around the pergola, garden arch or lattice along a fence. But if growing substantial twiners such as wisteria, ensure the support is strong enough to hold the weight of the mature plant.
Virginia creeper
Sticky feet climbers like Boston ivy and Virginia creeper can cling to almost any surface. Using suction-cup like pads or dense clusters of aerial roots, they creep and crawl in all directions, making them ideal candidates for covering large areas. But, take care with these climbers, as they can damage paintwork and mortar. ◆

he Australian sun packs a serious punch, especially in summer. While trees, shrubs and climbers can provide lots of welcome shade in a wellestablished garden, man-made products do a stellar job of filling the gaps to deliver extra pools of coolness. The ratio of shade to sunlight is an inexact science – about 50 per cent of the garden may be ideal, increasing to around 75 per cent in the most scorching parts of the country – but the perfect ratio is what is most comfortable. Carleen Rigas of Coolaroo suggests, “Shade should always be provided where people and pets will be spending time – around any seating areas, swimming pools, play areas and outdoor entertaining.”

Blocking the sun from hitting the walls of the house can also be beneficial. With the wraparound verandah falling out of vogue, there’s often nothing to block the full force of the sun from the home. Strategically placed shade can help to cool the inside of the house, as well as the outside. Choose from the following shade-givers or combine for a perfect shadowy solution. Umbrellas A good umbrella is the ultimate flexible solution. The classic market version is a perennial favourite, but cantilevered ones provide the same versatility without getting in the way. “A cantilevered umbrella allows it to be positioned so it doesn’t influence how you arrange the furniture. Most good ones now bunningsau
will come with movable arms and tilting operation,” says Mark Curtis of Secret Gardens. Umbrellas are also handy around pools, providing a great solution to the conundrum of pool safety regulations, which preclude the building of a climbable structure within a certain distance of the pool fence. “And, of course, umbrellas can be moved out of the way if you’re swimming towards the end of autumn or beginning of spring, when you don’t mind a bit of sun to warm up the pool,” adds Mark. Shade sails A shade sail offers the ability to screen a much larger area for a budget-friendly price. Use one to extend a pergola in the hottest months, protect the
kids on their play equipment, or even strategically cover garden beds; shade cloth is ideal for protecting delicate plants on the most burning hot days. Square and triangular shade sails do essentially the same job, the only difference being one less fixing point on a triangular sail, which gives you more flexibility. Remember to install shade sails at an angle so rainwater doesn’t pool in the middle but runs off, ideally into an adjacent garden bed. Choosing the right colour of sail for your home is mostly an aesthetic decision, but Mark suggests, “Always go for a darker shade sail as opposed to a lighter one, firstly because it doesn’t show up the dirt and grime as much, and secondly because you

can see the sky through a dark sail – stand under a white sail and you can’t see past it.” Outdoor blinds No amount of overhead cover will shield you from the sun when it slants in at an angle. This is where outdoor blinds, which are easy to add to an existing covered outdoor space, can help, particularly in west-facing spaces. “All homes should have outdoor blinds where possible,” says Carleen. “They protect your indoor furniture and cool the house, especially on hot afternoons, helping to reduce your energy bills and save money.” If the primary purpose is shade – rather than sheltering from rain – choose a mesh fabric to allow airflow, or even bamboo blinds to give your home an instant tropical vibe. Built structures A permanent pergola built off the back of the house is one of the best ways to enjoy an indoor/outdoor connection year-round, with the structure providing shade for outdoor entertaining, as well as helping cool your home’s interiors. The basic design tends to be the same, but there are myriad options to cover it, from a shade cloth to a motorised retractable awning or louvres. “We would always look to a retractable awning rather than a solid roof, simply because of the flexibility it offers for winter sun,” says Mark. Consider where the sun comes in throughout the year, so you don’t short-change yourself on light in winter. Though not an instant solution, you can also install tension wire and grow a deciduous climbing plant through it for blissful shade in summer, and sun in winter when the leaves fall off. e love a barbecue. And a pizza oven. And for serious foodies, a smoker is truly next level. Cooking outdoors, in all its forms, is Australia’s method of choice for casual entertaining. Enter the outdoor kitchen, an open-air cook zone, with a barbecue enhanced by gourmet tools and accessories. “Australians love to entertain outdoors,” says Matthew Hoffmann, Bunnings barbecue and outdoor heating buyer. “An outdoor kitchen delivers all the conveniences of an indoor kitchen but with the atmosphere of being out in our wonderful climate.” The space is usually equipped with a sink, workbenches for prep and serving, storage and fridges. It’s about having everything you need so conversation – and food and drink – can flow.
station, where you can cook with smoke under higher temperatures. Bar fridges and storage will redirect some of the foot traffic outside. You’ll need an easy passageway to the indoor kitchen, so supplies can safely make their way outdoors – a servery window is a useful addition here.
Planning An outdoor kitchen is the ultimate lifestyle upgrade. Location is everything; it should feel connected to the social hub, whether that’s a dining table or alfresco lounge area. If it’s close to the indoor kitchen, think of it as an extension of your main cooking
“Any barbecue and gas bottle installation must be in accordance with the barbecue manufacturer’s installation requirements and comply with Australian standards”
Hook it up As a general rule, the further from the house, the more expensive it will be to connect to existing electricity, gas and water lines. While you can run barbecues on cylinder gas, it’s so much more convenient if your outdoor kitchen is plumbed in to the mains. If views,
orientation and the lay of the land dictate a position further away from the house, a sink with hot and cold running water and a sink waste means you won’t have to run back and forth as much and, at the end of the night, you won’t have to drag messy grill plates and tools to the house to clean.

Modular or built-in A built-in outdoor kitchen gives you freedom to design it to your exact needs. This is useful in small or unusual spaces, or if you wish to extend your interior style outside. Oliver Sizeland, company director of Growing Rooms Landscapes (growingrooms.com.au) is a fan of this approach. “Built-ins are aesthetically pleasing and look like they have been

designed to fit in with the rest of the garden design,” he says. Kaboodle kitchen products, for instance, are moisture resistant so they can be used in an alfresco space, but they must always be installed under cover, to keep them out of direct rain. When planning your outdoor kitchen, Oliver Sizeland says a few additions can make a big difference. “I recommend a fridge to keep drinks and food cool, a sink, stone benchtops, and a feature wall in the back,” he says. Affordable, quick to install and easy to relocate if you’re renting or awaiting renovations, modular outdoor kitchens, such as the Alfresco Plus range, are another great option – and one that still allows you to have the bells and whistles, including a fridge, rangehood and sink. These ready-made entertaining hubs are planned to suit most outdoor spaces, with colours and materials in tried-and-true combinations.
Material options An outdoor kitchen is typically sheltered but still has to withstand wind, UV rays and rain, as well as heat from the grill itself. Grade 316 stainless steel, also known as marine-grade stainless steel, is the gold standard for corrosive environments, although grade 304 stainless steel is also very weather resistant. Wall materials need to be carefully selected too. “Ambient humidity and heat from cooking appliances needs to be managed carefully, so select a moisture resistant plasterboard for walls and ceilings,” says Therese Tarlinton, CSR Gyprock marketing communications manager, who suggests Gyprock Aquachek. Solid timber and marine ply also hold up to outdoor conditions. For benchtops, look to stainless steel, concrete and exterior-rated hardwoods.
is a practical addition; try adjustable wall lights, to be directed onto the barbecue while you cook and redirected to greenery to provide ambient light as you dine. In hot climates and west-facing outdoor kitchens, a fan can help to make the cooking zone more comfortable and keep mosquitoes at bay. Outdoor heating can keep the party going into the night and the kitchen in use well into the cooler months. Look to wall- or ceiling-mounted heating, so it won’t be a trip hazard. Shelter and ventilation An outdoor room ideally needs a roof of sorts so it can operate year-round. Walls are popular too, especially in windy areas or west-facing zones, which need protection from glaring sun. As outdoor kitchens become more room-like, ventilation is required. An outdoor rangehood is necessary if your cooking zone is well covered, and especially if it is joined to the interior. Louvred openings in walls allow smoke plumes to dissipate before they hit your entertaining area, as well as acting as a cooling system.

You can renew them very easily and without removing the existing joints! Use LOCTITE RE-NEW and in 5 minutes it will be done! Tip: No need to use a gun, just apply the product at a 900 angle and pass it over the entire joint again to smooth the sealant.
Mouldy joints should first be cleaned with a sponge or with an anti-mould spray, to make it disappear for a long time! LOCTITE RE-NEW has a re-inforced anti-mould formula that repeals, stops and prevents mould long term. Tip: Leave the area to dry fully, as applying silicone to a damp area will encourage mould growth.
Use LOCTITE RE-NEW to cover yellowing and cracking sealant joints with a new layer of extra white thick sealant and leave to dry for at least 6 hours before any contact with water. Tip: If your hands get dirty doing the job, you can wash the product away with water! It’s not sticky and is odourless.

Chance of showers
T
urning an outdoor shower on muddy kids and dogs, grubby gardeners and sandy bodies means more fun outside and less mess inside. If you spend a lot of time on outdoor activities, it’s a convenient way to rinse off chlorine after a swim, or to wash down yourself and your equipment. However, our love of outdoor showers is fuelled by more than just practicalities. “In the last couple of years we’ve seen their popularity grow, even in urban areas,” says Steve Warner, principal landscape designer at Outhouse Design. “People want to recreate that holiday feeling at home but, more importantly, I think we are enjoying more connection with nature and the outdoor experience.”
If installing a shower on a deck, make sure there’s good drainage below and the surface has a non-slip finish
Hot or cold? “Cold water showers are very economical and you have lots of options when deciding on location,” says Ben Harrison, business manager at plumbing company Mr Drains. “Hot and cold showers usually connect to your existing water pipes, so the closer your shower is to these, the easier and more cost-effective it is to install. This is why an outside wall of the house is a popular location.” bunnings.com.au |

Solar showers offer a low-cost warm water alternative, without the hassle of connecting to pipes. Hy-Clor’s solar outdoor showers, for example, attach to a garden hose and use the sun to heat water up to 40 degrees. Practical magic To withstand the elements, outdoor showers require corrosion-resistant fixtures; think structural or marinegrade stainless steel. Also consider the elements when choosing a location – it should have airflow and sunlight, and bunningsau
not just for comfort. “Choose somewhere that will dry out well,” says Steve. “You don’t want moss or mould gathering on the surface because it will be unpleasant to use and present potential safety issues.” An ideal base will be a sturdy, level surface that can withstand water. “It could be an existing surface, such as bricks, stone, gravel or decking – treated timber or a composite decking material works well, but note that untreated timber can rot,” says Steve. “Your base needs to be slip-resistant and, while
we’re ticking the safety box, also think about appropriate lighting and access.” No drain, no gain Most significantly, you need to consider where the water will drain. “It’s important to get advice from a professional plumber,” says Steve. “You need to consider drainage and mitigate any potential water damage to buildings and the impact on ground surfaces. The shower also needs to meet building codes and any local council regulations.”

Alfresco fashion From basic hose-plus-tap to more elaborate set-ups, outdoor showers can be designed to fit any garden style. “The pleasure of wandering down a garden path to an outdoor shower appeals to people,” says Steve. At the other end of the spectrum, an outdoor shower can be the centrepiece of a large, private structure that almost gives you an extra bathroom in summer.
The growing trend for outdoor showers takes alfresco living to the next level
Position your alfresco bathroom with a screen of plants – but if you want more privacy, rig up a rail and shower curtains
Allowing grey water to seep into the garden is the simplest drainage system, as long as you take a few precautions. “If the shower is close to a building, make sure the ground slopes away from it and check how well your soil drains,” says Ben. “You may need to dig a pit and fill it with pebbles to distribute water slowly into the surrounding soil.” Ensuring you don’t contaminate stormwater drains or introduce nasties to the soil is critical. Use ecofriendly soap products and seek expert advice (from your local water authority) if planning to use grey water on the garden. It is possible to connect your shower to your current sewer system, but it’s not an easy fix. “Doing this involves extensive work, digging and adding pipes underground,” explains Ben. ¿

Jamie & Az
Into the woods This striking kitchen revamp by style makers Az de la Cruz and Jamie House, of Haus of Cruze, centres around the chic panel fronting the peninsular bench. Made from Porta Tasmanian oak half round dowel, it has turned a plain piece of joinery into a stunning feature. Although it was the priciest element of the makeover, Az points out it was far cheaper than having a bespoke cabinet made with a similar look; “It gives a luxe look on a millennial’s budget!”

Brought to you by Bunnings, easy DIY projects and chic styling have turned a bland house into a beautiful home
he Bunnings crew has teamed up with some of our favourite style creators to transform a small home on a typical first home buyer’s budget. Each team has tackled a different area, starting with a kitchen/dining transformation by Az De La Cruz and Jamie House of Haus of Cruze (@hausofcruze) and a bedroom
makeover by Geneva Vanderzeil, founder of Collective Gen (@genevavanderzeil). “The styling was decades old, but we saw a lot of potential. The space had great bones!” says Az of the tired kitchen-diner. “An open-plan kitchen and dining with a north-facing aspect flooded with natural light ticks all the boxes for the perfect entertaining space.” bunningsau |

Az and Jamie gave the plain pantry door a lift with an Easycraft ‘EasyVJ’ panel. “By simply adding a sleek matte black handle to the door, we instantly add depth and introduce a contrast in texture, perfect for a contemporary, luxe look and feel,” explains Az.
Before
Pretty in paint The underbench cabinets were sound, but dated, so the apricot-coloured laminate was given a lift with Tirau Double from the Dulux Renovation Range. For the benchtop, the team used the specialist benchtop coating from the same paint collection. “It was super easy to do,” says Az, explaining that using a smooth roller and finishing with a gloss clear coat gave the bench its shine. The architraves and skirtings were transformed with Dulux Vivid White paint.
Bargain hunters Faced with furnishing their space from scratch without blowing the budget, Az and Jamie trawled Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace for preloved pieces, such as the pew in the dining area.

Making the bedroom wall a feature with Taubmans elegant Spruce Grove paint helps the Dulux Vivid White wardrobes visually recede
Update it
“Introducing accents of black draws the eye, to accentuate pockets of interest while anchoring the space and creating a sense of harmony,” says Az
Style file The final details – real and faux plants such as monstera, fiddle leaf fig and Bangalow palm, and beautifully styled open shelves – were essential components of the design. “Our ethos is to evoke emotion and romance in any project we take on. We love creating spaces that resonate with people on an emotional level, beyond the cosmetic appeal. That feeling that stops you in your tracks and makes you say ‘I can see myself living here’,” explains Az.

BEDROOM
The big sleep The main bedroom, with four plain walls and no distinguishing features to speak of, offered up the ultimate blank canvas for style creator Geneva Vanderzeil, founder of Collective Gen, who is known for her warm, textured interior style. “It had a large window that we used as a focal point,” she says. What the room really lacked was character, so Geneva used simple craft projects, layered textures and loads of greenery to bring the space to life. bunningsau |
Freshly furnished Keen to add some on-trend rattan to the space, but with an eye on the slim budget, Geneva came up with an innovative way to upcycle second-hand bedside chests and a dresser with hessian fabric, creating an alternative textural look. “We painted them white and then used hessian, cut to size and attached with adhesive spray,” she explains. “We called it the poor girl’s guide to rattan!” Spray-painting the hardware rose gold provided a luxe-effect finishing touch. } bunnings | bunnings.com.au

Update it Wall flower Easycraft ‘EasyVJ’ panelling is a simple solution to a dull plastered wall. “Putting in the VJ panelling gave the space a lot more character,” says Geneva. It was painted in Taubmans Spruce Grove, echoed in the bed linen. “I wanted to bring in some colour, but without it being overwhelming,” she adds. “Getting a lot of plants in this room was a big focus because they make a space feel really welcoming.” Geneva used string of pearls plants in the planter section of the Home Design ‘Pianta’ lights, but always remove the plant when you need to water it.
The leaf-shaped Mercator ‘Cooya’ fan is a whimsical nod to the abundance of plants. “Bunnings have an installation service and it was so quick and easy to get that done,” says Geneva

“The plants we chose have air-purifying qualities, so I’m hoping that makes it easier to sleep in that room and relax” Geneva Vanderzeil Collective Gen
Bedtime story Geneva put her DIY skills to work to create an ingenious wall cushion in place of a bedhead (see how to make it, below right). She then hung it from a curtain rod with strips of leather – “They’re actually thrifted leather belts,” she explains. Just add comfy pillows for a luxe and utterly unique bedroom look.

Mind the gaps Ember attack is one of the greatest threats from a bushfire. “Ensure that all window and door openings have steel or bronze screens fitted,” says Angus. “Install brushes at the top of roller doors, vinyl padding at the bottom, and fill the gaps down the sides with silicone.” Use a cordless caulking gun to apply a fire-rated sealant such as Sikasil ‘670 Fire’, which can provide up to four hours of fire resistance. Con Calagis, marketing manager at Whites Group, says, “The updated standard AS 3959 requires any gaps greater than 3mm to be sealed by a mesh with a maximum aperture of 2mm.” Use a product such as Whites ‘Ember Mesh Ultra’, which bunnings.com.au |

Make the cut The most important factor in protecting your home is to limit the natural fuel around it. “The place to start is vegetation management,” says Country Fire Authority Fire Safety Officer Angus Mair. “Any passive non-combustible approach will always provide a better outcome than an active system that requires someone to be there to make it work,” he says. Use a chainsaw or pole pruner to remove tree branches that overhang or touch the house, and opt for pebbles as mulch rather than combustible woodchips. Keep the grass mown short up to 50 metres away from your house. Use a line trimmer to control long grass near structures, and regularly remove fallen leaves or other plant debris. A sturdy tool such as the Cyclone firefighting ‘Rakho’ will make short work of clearing potential fuel. Choose landscaping features such as paved paths that can act as firebreaks, and don’t position new trees closer than 10 metres to the house.

Research your home’s Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) with the Fire Protection Association Australia and check with your local council for extra requirements is corrosion-resistant and non-combustible, with an aperture size of 2mm. “This makes it perfect for screening ventilation openings and weep holes, gaps in eaves, and openings in sub-floor supports, for example around verandahs and decks,” says Con. From the top down Clean out your gutters and fit fire-rated metal (not plastic) gutter guards. Besides keeping out leaves, twigs and other rubbish, gutter guards can prevent bushfire embers accumulating and igniting the roof space. “Block up all gaps in the roof including the ridge, valleys and gutter unions using steel mesh or special corrugated foam strips,” says Angus. For larger gaps, use a fire-rated expanding foam. “Roof sprinklers are a very good addition and can make all the difference,” says Angus. Choose all-metal butterfly sprinklers with metal pipes and fixings. These require large amounts of water, so use a self-contained diesel or petrol pump (ideally in a flameproof enclosure) to pressurise your supply in case of mains failure. “A portable pump to transfer water from your rain tank, swimming pool or pond in the event of a fire is a worthwhile investment,” says Grant Bertram, Ozito product manager.

Listen to the advice of your fire service during fire events. Contact your local fire brigade for more information and advice on preparing an evacuation plan. Inside information Bushfires aren’t the only fire risk you can guard against. The kitchen is where most fires start inside the home, so keep a dry-powder fire extinguisher on hand. This type can be used to extinguish burning oil and other flammable liquids, as well as fires consuming wood, paper, rubber or plastic. A fire blanket is made from flameresistant fabric, which includes specially treated non-irritating glass fibre. It’s kept in a quick-release case that can be wallmounted. Use a fire blanket to smother a burning cooktop, or wrap it around a person whose clothes have caught fire. Regardless of how the fire starts, you can prepare for the worst by storing documents, jewellery, digital devices and valuables in a fire-resistant safe. Some are capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 900°C for up to an hour.

on’t let a small backyard cramp your gardening style. Raised beds, vertical gardens and modular kits are just a few of the tools you can use to grow vegies and herbs in tight spaces. The minimum requirements are room to maintain and harvest, and adequate sunlight (six hours daily, at least). With those boxes ticked, you’ll start to see every space as a growing opportunity. Well grounded Consider what you want to grow and work from there. If it’s a few compact herbs and leafy greens, a small in-ground garden is sufficient. However, if the soil is difficult to dig or you have no bare ground at all, raised beds or modular kits are ideal. “Place them on top of existing beds, concrete or grass,” says Simon Bird of Birdies Garden Products. “They encourage faster plant growth because the soil warms quicker and
is less compact.” Modular kits often allow you to create a variety of configurations from one product to suit your space. Plant up Where space is at a premium, choose plants that give you bang for your buck. “Herbs are one example of this – pay a few dollars at the supermarket every week or grow a near year-round supply at home,” says Simon. But, depending on the size of your space, your choices may be restricted. “Root vegies, like carrots, parsnips and ginger, need at least 300mm of soil, but for herbs and salad greens, less than 300mm is fine,” says Simon. To grow your own potatoes, you can buy specialty ‘potato bags’, so there’s no digging required, except when you’re harvesting for spuds. Dwarf varieties deliver standard size fruit and veg on a smaller plant, while vines can be trained up a support, saving on space.
The essentials All good growth starts from the ground up, whether growing in soil or potting mix. “Vegies respond well to healthy soil, so add organic matter and compost to give them a good start,” says Heath Okely, national marketing manager of Richgro. “Regularly feeding with an organic fertiliser will help nourish plants and the soil, too.” If growing in pots and vertical gardens, opt for a premium potting mix – don’t use garden soil, as it hardens and compacts. Ensure you protect all plants with organic mulch to help retain moisture. Pots and containers can dry out quickly, so monitor them closely. To help take the guesswork out of watering, and maximise water efficiency, consider installing a dripper irrigation system with a timer.

our home should be a place you can feel safe, without fear of intruders. Home burglaries have decreased significantly over the past decade, due partly to better technology and increased awareness, but it’s important not to become complacent. With home security, the first thing most people think of is their front door, but there are many other options, ranging from commonsense measures such as locking your doors and windows (many people don’t!), to high-tech, smart solutions.
Consider the basics Time, visibility and sound are the three factors you need to consider when boosting your security. In other words, slow down potential burglars, give them nowhere to hide and make sure you can hear them. Time: Even simple but hardto-penetrate windows, doors, deadlocks and security screens can slow a burglar long enough for them to lose interest. Visibility: Lighting at night, particularly sensor lighting, is a must. Keep trees and bushes low and trimmed, and ensure your fences can be seen over
or through to help you spot anyone lurking around your home. Make sure there are no places for burglars to hide. If you must have high, solid fencing – which many of us desire for privacy – bump up the lighting and security cameras in the area. Sound: Electronic alarm systems are popular in today’s high-tech world, though many people still maintain that a dog is the best alert system! Gravel is another relatively inexpensive way of being alerted to an intruder. “Decorative stone or gravel around your house } bunningsau |

Security!
LIGHT UP YOUR GARDEN AND PATHWAYS
Noisy gravel is a cost-effective way to deter potential burglars
is a great deterrent. You can hear anyone walking on it a mile away!” says builder David Assabgy of Onyx Residential (onyxresidential.com.au). Limit access Most break-ins occur when people leave their windows and doors unlocked, but even locked, how secure are they? Installing any smart technology will be futile if your doors and doorjambs aren’t solid, says David. “A solid core door is essential for security as it is difficult to kick in,” he explains. “A semi-solid core is the next best thing – less expensive and still a good choice – and another option is an aluminium door, especially something with a trilock, or a mortice lock.” All doors and doorjambs should be reinforced with heavyduty metal strike plates, using long screws to ensure they won’t
let go easily if someone does try to kick it in. “Ultimately though, it’s what you put on the outside of a window or door that counts,” adds David. “Solid metal screens that can’t be prised open are great deterrents for burglars.” Go for gadgets Once you have your basics in place (robust door, screens and quality hardware), there is a whole array of smart home products that can help to boost your security. Smart technology allows you to control lights outdoors, creating the illusion that someone is at home, while a connected doorbell is an easy way to help safeguard your house – it lets you see who is at the door before you open it. A picture of the person can be sent directly to your smartphone, allowing you to see and even speak to them from wherever you are.

Use these tricks to deter any potential baddies. Grow prickly bushes under windows. Cut back trees around a multi-storey house, particularly near windows and balconies. Invest in shatterproof glass or use window film. Put up a ‘Beware of the dog’ sign, even if you don’t have a dog. Store ladders out of sight. Leave worn men’s work boots by the door. I see you Visibility is one of the most important security elements. Sensor lights – both solar and wired in – are highly effective, if strategically placed. Jason Neophytou, lifestyle expert at HPM, says, “Position them to cover large areas such as pathways and driveways, open areas in the garden and around the pool. Motion sensor lighting along pathways deters intruders, acts as an alert when someone is approaching the house, and illuminates any uneven surfaces for invited guests. It’s also helpful to install sensor lights within your garage, as this is often where valuable items are stored.” Ensure your street number is visible at night by using large reflective numbers, backlit with automated lighting or illuminated with a simple solar light. This will help police to find your home in an emergency. ¿

From the timber, cut four legs at 425mm each, four legs at 325mm, and eight rails at 250mm. To do this, measure and cut one of each size, then use these as templates to measure and cut the rest, one at a time. This allows for the width of the saw blade and ensures all pieces are exactly the same length.
Smooth the frames all over using 180-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block, going over the screws to remove any breakout and rounding all edges and corners. Wipe away dust with a clean, damp cloth, then use a mini mohair roller to apply two coats of varnish, leaving to dry between coats.

On one rail, use a combination square to mark holes in the corners, 10mm from the edges. Position this squarely on another rail to drill the holes with a countersinking bit. The bit will indicate on the underneath piece where to make the next holes. Position this piece on the next rail and repeat for all the rails.
To assemble, on the underside of the bench tops, measure and mark 25mm from the sides and ends to position the frames. Stagger four countersunk holes along the frame to secure using 40mm screws. Repeat for the rest of the legs, ensuring the smaller bases are attached to the smaller top.

Measure and mark each pine piece 100mm from the top and 30mm from the base, ensuring the marks are centred 20mm from either side. Drill one piece at a time, holding it securely over the edge of a table, using a 19mm spade bit to make holes for the 19mm dowel.
Prevent the frame from slipping off the dowel by tapping nails into the protruding ends, leaving the nail heads about 5mm above the surface.

Cut the canvas to 1075mm wide by 2400mm long. Use sponges and brushes to decorate with paint, leaving to dry thoroughly.
To make the front brace, cut a 300mm length of cord to thread through the 7mm holes at the top of the pine, knotting the ends. To make the back brace, thread the remaining cord through the 7mm holes at the base of the pine, knotting the ends.
At the corners and halfway along the ends of the canvas, measure 30mm from the edge to make six 5mm-long incisions with scissors. Centre the canvas lengthways over the frame, folding the edges around base, threading cable ties though the incisions and around the dowel to secure, tucking the ends under the tent. Note: The tent isn't weatherproof so make sure to bring it inside.◆

Grass is greener Road to a lush lawn Choosing the right lawn is about much more than finding the right look and feel of the turf. For example, while you may enjoy the fine leaf blades of couch grass, your backyard may not receive adequate sunlight for it to thrive. For the best fit, you will need to consider climate (some varieties won’t grow well in all of Australia), how much sun your yard gets and if there are any large trees creating shade at certain times of the day. Also think about how often the lawn will be used (will kids be playing on it regularly, or will your dog be wearing tracks along the boundary?) and how much time and effort you have available to maintain it. There are lawn types to suit most needs, so carefully weigh up your options. Growing tips Lawns are living plants and need water, food and regular maintenance to look their best, but they’re often overlooked when it comes to garden care. Watering with a sprinkler a couple of times a week in the morning (water restrictions permitting) will encourage deep root growth, which is essential for a healthy lawn. Feed well in spring to autumn with a lawn-specific fertiliser, mow regularly and pull or treat weeds early. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Buffalo
Couch
This much-loved variety is grown for its ease of maintenance, good looks and shade tolerance.
With fine leaf blades, but by no means delicate, couch is fast growing and hard-wearing.
Zoysia
Kikuyu
Fairly new to the scene, zoysia is soft underfoot and thrives in high heat, humidity and coastal conditions.
bunningsau
Budget friendly, drought tolerant and self-repairing, kikuyu is ideal for those who enjoy mowing regularly.
Words Tammy Huynh
Why we love it It’s hard to imagine an Aussie backyard without a lawn. The green, green grass of home offers you, the kids and your pets countless hours of enjoyment, plus personal pride in cultivating a perfect carpet of green. What’s more, natural grass can also help cool the surrounding area, reduce noise pollution and even increase the value of your home.
