Feeling the bite of midwinter? It’s easy to get into a slump when the chill hits. And for that reason our annual D.I.Y. July issue lands right now, with a range of projects for different skill levels to entice everyone off the couch. There are many facets to DIY, starting with skills that help us fix things around the house, all the way to more ambitious projects that can satisfy a creative urge – and save money.
To get everyone in the mood, we profile a bunch of Aussies who make DIY a habit, and in some cases a profession. The line-up includes creators whose projects are attracting attention in the Bunnings Workshop online community and beyond, plus can-do parents brightening up their home on a budget. You’ll also love the cheery chaps from the Parafield branch of the Men’s Shed Association, who put their skills, heart and soul into making things for their community (page 17).
We reckon there’s a project for everyone in this month’s issue, whether it’s upcycling an old change table to create a hot drinks trolley, reviving a space with wallpaper or freshening up dated porch tiles with a paint stencil. And don’t forget there is glory to be had, too – enter your handiwork in our Search for Australia’s Best D.I.Y. Project 2024 (page 13).
Projects aside, we have all the info you need to indulge or kick off your relationship with roses (page 46). And don’t miss our indoor fern article (page 52) – the fast way to brighten dull corners. Enjoy the read and the DIY dabbling!

NAIDOC Week kicks off on July 7, with a calendar of celebrations and events drawing attention to the history, rich culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The peerapper people of the takayna/tarkine in north-western Tasmania have been harvesting bull kelp from the area’s pristine coastal waters for thousands of years, to use for food and to craft traditional water carriers. In an exciting partnership with horticultural manufacturer Seasol and Bunnings, First Nations-owned brand tarkiner has launched two plant foods: tarkiner organic seaweed indoor plant concentrate and organic seaweed indoor plant spray, available in store and online. Both utilise takayna/tarkine bull kelp, harnessing its powerful properties for the benefit of all plant lovers.
CLEANING HACK
Bake off!
Remove baked-on grease from your oven without harsh chemicals. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Cut a lemon into 1cm slices and place in a baking dish filled with water. Pop the dish in the oven for 20 minutes, then remove and let the oven cool. Give it a good scrub with lemon halves sprinkled with baking soda and watch stubborn marks dissolve! Wipe down all surfaces with a clean, damp cloth and enjoy your sparkling oven.

IN THE GARDEN July
Protect plants from frost, blitz slippery surfaces and sow edibles to harvest in the coming months
In frost-prone areas, protect vulnerable plants by covering them at night with a frost cloth. Remove it the next morning and, if needed, put back on again in the evening. Move potted plants under cover or to a sheltered spot until the danger of frost has passed.
Winter is a great time to tidy the garden shed. Take stock of any chemicals you have and dispose of out-of-date or unwanted products responsibly through a specialised recycling service – check with your local council for the nearest safe disposal facility. Clean and sharpen tools, and oil wooden handles. Collect any excess plastic pots for recycling at selected Bunnings stores.
Moss, algae, mould and lichen tend to build up in the cooler months and can create a slip hazard on hard surfaces such as paths and driveways. Control it by treating it with a specially formulated product that will also help to inhibit future growth.
It may be the dead of winter, but there’s plenty of ‘sow and grow’ you can do now: snow peas, beetroot, broad beans, spinach, shallots and onions. In tropical climates, try beans, capsicum, tomatoes, lettuce, silverbeet or pumpkin.
During inclement weather, sort your shed!
After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Renovating on a budget, learning new skills and enjoying a job well done – getting your DIY on brings many rewards, as we learned by talking to Bunnings regulars across the country. Whether they’re seeking advice in store or via the online how-to guides, finding inspiration from other DIYers or enlisting mates and their own families, getting stuck into a project is a way to foster connection – and that’s what Bunnings D.I.Y. July is all about!
TEAMWORK IS DREAM WORK
Bryce: For a large number of the Shedders, coming together in a community workshop environment to build projects that help others has been life changing. We have a space where we can connect with other men, maintaining social relationships during retirement, and it is a chance to have respite from normal life – most guys are carers for their seriously ill wives or have serious medical issues themselves. One of the wives gave us a big hug and said, “Thank you for giving me my husband back,” as he had overcome severe

depression by coming to the shed. It has saved many lives and marriages. Generally, the brainstorming is our favourite part of the DIY process, as everyone wants to help to make the best product possible. Each member has their own approach as we all come from very diverse backgrounds. With at least 50 years of work experience behind most of the 30 members, there is 1,500 years
of experience floating around the room and no shortage of input and opinions. Also, having a bunch of old blokes who have a long-term habit (like most blokes) of, ‘That will be useful one day,’ we have heaps and heaps of materials that were donated.
Our favourite DIY projects are the cubby houses and mud kitchens. They are usually made from unwanted pallets, resulting in tangible items that will bring enjoyment to kids for many years. Plus, they are sustainable and benefit the community. The guys love the sense of achievement of creating a useful project and the joy of seeing little kids benefiting from our efforts.

Building the chalkboard sandpit was a smooth process for Luke
figuring out how to accomplish it, and any obstacles I may need to overcome. I usually end up on the Bunnings website looking up the materials I need and getting an idea of what the project will cost. Ultimately, though, when you are creating something you’ve never made before, you will come up against unpredictable setbacks. Knowing this, I jump straight in with a rough plan and figure the rest out as I go along.
CHILD’S PLAY
Luke: For me, DIY inspiration was born from seeing projects we wanted to accomplish in our own home, without having the budget to pay someone else to do it. The only way I could create the spaces we wanted was to learn how to do it myself.
I approach new tasks with a huge sense of optimism and dive straight into
My favourite project is the chalkboard sandpit I built for my kids. They use it all the time and I really enjoyed building it. My most challenging job was a DIY sliding dog gate. I wanted to figure out how to make the gate slide without a track on the floor, so the kids could ride their bikes over it or run over it without tripping. I nearly gave up on the whole idea. Luckily, I had the foresight to zoom out on the problem, try a few different approaches, and push through until I found the solution. I ended up using eyelet rings on the gate and frame, a

DIY has changed my life immensely, improving every aspect, especially my mental resilience and the way I face problems, knowing they are temporary and I can use the resources around me to solve them. It’s a way to get into the zone, focus on what’s in front of me and quiet my mind.

Sally Faughey
A Sydney-based stylist and DIY enthusiast, Sally’s style is a colourdrenched delight, with projects in bold colours and eclectic textures. Bunnings go-to: “The store team members. They know their stuff!”
A VALUES PROPOSITION
Sally: I grew up in a family of six kids and money was always very tight. My mum would take us out hunting in local charity shops, and we’d be knee-deep at every council clean-up we went past, looking for treasures. I do this with my own children – I think it makes them use their minds and think creatively when they don’t just receive everything brand new! Being a DIYer and getting stuck into my own
jobs, as opposed to outsourcing or buying things off the shelf, has become part of who I am. I love showing my kids that I don’t need to wait for help or to be told how to get it finished. Seeing that side of me has flooded into their own personalities – I’m aiming to grow independent, self-assured individuals.
My favourite part of the DIY process is the construction. The lead-up to it makes my brain explode – I fuss a lot over the finer details – but there’s nothing more satisfying than having everything laid out in front of you, ready to kick off.
My must-have tools are a level and a tape measure. Those levels are pure genius – whack one on a wall when you are lining up photo frames, hanging shelves, installing tiles or mounting cabinets to guarantee any crooked installations are sorted out quickly. And a tape measure – well, I basically don’t leave home without one. I always have a tiny measure in my handbag, one in the car and several at home.

PRECISION PLANNER
Rufaro: I enjoy being hands-on, figuring things out and bringing ideas to life. As a child I used to tinker with anything I could get hold of, which I have now realised in my later years is my creative outlet.
When I have a new project to work on, I spend some time designing the functionality of the space and researching the materials I need to achieve the look I want. I think it is important to always make something that works well. However, once I start the project, I can happily change the original plan!
I recently completed a laundry renovation where I combined the utility of a laundry with the aesthetic of a boutique powder room, to service the standalone WC in the next room. This reno stood out as the design elevated the space into a beautiful, inviting room, while still retaining the utility with a dual functionality. I experimented with combining unique tile choices and modern themes to really push the design, more than I usually do.
My favourite part of the DIY process is seeing the different parts of a job come together, particularly where I have followed my intuition and tweaked the original design. My backyard renovation is a good example, where different projects occurred at different times, but trusting the process resulted in a beautiful outdoor area.
My combination square (which looks nothing like the name) is probably one of my favourite tools. Though underrated, it’s essential for me because it allows all my other tools and equipment to work as well as they should, by providing them with straight, square and level parameters. DIY has introduced me to a community of fellow enthusiasts online at Bunnings Workshop. It has also provided me with many opportunities to create lasting memories with my family, by coming up with projects and creating beautiful spaces in our home.

This Melbourne couple learnt on the job as they personalised their home, while keeping the Bunnings Workshop online community updated (@homeinmelbourne). Bunnings best buy: “DeWALT impact driver – our most-used tool for DIY.”
THE DREAM TEAM
Aletheia: Our first home was the catalyst for all of our DIY and renovations. We are constantly brainstorming ideas – though we may already have two or three
unfinished projects on the go! We both get a significant amount of fulfilment from a productive weekend, whether it’s working on something in the garden or simply getting things done around the house – there’s a never-ending list of jobs to do!
What we love most about DIY is the feeling of creating something entirely on your own. To see a renovation through from the initial designs to the finished project has been incredibly rewarding. We love to compare the before and after photos to see how much a space has changed.
Our favourite DIY job was our main bathroom renovation, which was a drastic transformation. We wanted the bathroom to feel elevated despite its small size, and to add character with a wainscot feature wall. We drew a lot of our inspiration from social media (we love to create Pinterest boards!) to get an idea of the layout of the space as well as which elements would help
Wainscoting was “relatively easy DIY,” says Brent
achieve our goal for the room. For example, in this small bathroom, selecting a large oval mirror and mounting it higher draws your eye up, giving the feeling of a taller ceiling and reflecting the wainscot feature wall.
We always thoroughly research and plan from start to finish before beginning work. We like to get a good understanding of the process, steps, sequence of tasks, rules and guidelines (if applicable), materials and tools needed, even if it takes weeks or months before we pull the trigger on a task. This means fewer unexpected mishaps, but when we are met with challenges, we try not to rush into finding a solution, as often an idea will come with time and thought. It also helps to have a positive mindset: DIY is what we love to do, so we never feel discouraged when issues crop up – we understand that hitting a snag every now and again is all part of it. ●

SMALL SPACES, BIG IDEAS
A handy couple’s Perth apartment renovation is a masterclass in stylish storage on a budget
Rosie and Ciaran, both architects, live here with their cat, Belle.
THOROUGHLY MODERN HOME
A “small and humble” 1960s brick-veneer apartment in a leafy suburb of Perth. WHEN THEY BOUGHT IT
2017
WHAT THEY DID
An interior update, including a new kitchen and bathroom, and lots of DIY built-in joinery.
Working out how to use space wisely is a daily challenge for design professionals Rosie (Bunnings Workshop community member @RosieD) and husband C iaran, who wanted to make the most out of apartment living. So when they bought their first home, a small 1960s unit and fixer-upper in a block of five, they knew the project would centre around style and an abundance of storage. “Anyone who lives in a small apartment knows that having a place for all your stuff makes life easier,” says Rosie. “Everything is out of the way, making the apartment feel calm and more spacious.” The pair favour a look that nods to the Mid-century Modern aesthetic, so designing streamlined integrated storage was key. Their modest renovation budget and a desire to create something unique – as well as being able to adjust it over time – led them down the DIY route. “My thinking is, there’s
a bit of a learning curve, but once you have the tools and develop your skills, you can modify things to suit your needs,” says Ciaran.
The couple spent months planning and drawing different versions of their joinery, eventually choosing black SpecRite Formply – a durable board normally used for concrete formwork, with raw edges, which they sealed using Cabot’s Cabothane Clear. Walls painted in contrasting Dulux Natural White make the apartment feel as airy as possible, and existing engineered timber floors bring the necessary warmth. Green accents (bathroom tiles and front door, which was painted in Dulux Mangrove Leaf) add colour.
Renovating began in 2018, when the bulk of the work was done, with tinkering continuing over the next few years. The kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms were tackled first, with joinery sections cut to size in a friend’s shed “over many weekends”.

EASY ACCESS
“I prefer to hang up pans rather than rummage around for them in drawers,” says Ciaran.
KITCHEN DECLUTTER
Space-saving narrow shelf units are perfect for books and collectables.
PLAY AWAY
Ciaran’s DIY jigsawpuzzle table, made from old chair legs and Tasmanian oak, is genius.
When choosing indoor plants, always read the label as some can be toxic to children and pets.
They then labelled and stacked the pieces before assembling the ‘boxes’, which sat in the living room while tradies rewired the electrics, gutted the bathroom and moved the original plumbing to fit the new layout.
While the couple used professional cabinet-makers to build more complex cupboards, doors and drawers, they built the kitchen carcasses and all the shelves and other storage units throughout the apartment themselves. The Formply was an inspired choice. “It’s relatively cheap, simple to work with and you don’t need to edge it. Plus, you can easily modify or reuse it,” explains Ciaran. “Being able to choose the material at our local Bunnings then grab more when we needed it was great,” he says.
Pine plywood doors and drawer fronts on all the cabinetry were finished with Feast Watson Liming White, while a room divider of SpecRite merbau battens was routed to achieve a bamboo-like design.
“I’m constantly looking for things to do!” says Ciaran. “We love the flat and are so happy with what we’ve done. We invested a lot of time, but saved a lot of money.”
HIDDEN DEPTHS
The couple designed extra-deep cupboards to accommodate large boxes and luggage. Ciaran brought a unique touch to the recessed shelving, using merbau batten offcuts left over from the room divider.

The latest interior design trends can inspire quick updates and help you nail down bigger plans
Words Caroline Botting
As interior style morphs and shifts, and at times takes dramatic turns, it influences colours, shapes, materials and fittings. In 2024, the ’newstalgia’ trend has us looking back to move forward. The term combines the familiarity of the past but with modernised details and finishes, explains Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright.
“This year is all about self-expression: creating a space that is moodboosting, playful and reflects individual personalities,” says Jane.
“We’re shrugging off cool and careful minimalist style and hunting down bold decor to refresh our living spaces on a budget.”
Along with a focus on dramatic yet nostalgic one-of-a-kind interiors, there’s a drive towards connecting with nature.

RETRO GLAMOUR
Sophisticated spaces with a feeling of understated luxury and warmth come to the fore. Curved and linear designs remain, but with a touch of old-school glam. “Design classics from the 1970s and 1980s are back in fashion, but with a twist – they’ve been modernised and reimagined in rich colours, textures, patterns and finishes,” says Jane Wright. Warm timbers, glass, lacquer finishes, geometric shapes and bold patterns in tiling and textiles all feature, as do tactile, nostalgic textures, such as velvet, bouclé and shag, for cushions, throws and rugs. Colours like pomegranate, smoked paprika and caramel can bring both warmth and drama to painted walls, furnishings and accessories.
2
HERALD HANDCRAFTED
The handmade movement is in full swing and decor that feels crafted and authentic, with traditional techniques such as cane and rattan weaving, is celebrated. Vintage and upcycles are also in demand. “We might invest in a single statement piece that brings us joy every time we look at it. Or we might look to upcycle, rehome, repaint, re-love, or repurpose nostalgic or inexpensive pieces that provide us comfort,” says Jane. Rugs look handmade and ceramics have an aged patina. Soft furnishings use linen and cotton, giving a strippedback and natural feel. ”Look for freeform designs that are wavy, mushroom-shaped and geometric – anything that has a handmade or artisan look to it,” suggests Jane.
3
FUTURE BATHROOMS
A flush of colour is edging out the all-white bathroom, with bold shades, more subtle hues and earthy tones emerging. Look out for traditional wallpapers and patterned tiles, and lighting with customised shapes and mood options. Increasingly, bathrooms will have more considered design features (water-saving fixtures and more natural light). Soothing textures such as timber and stone will be popular, while plants help soften functional spaces.

BRINGING NATURE IN
Connecting with nature is known to have a positive impact on our physical and mental health. It’s a huge inspiration this year, with designs that amplify wellbeing and stability.
“The focus of this trend is creating calming spaces we can retreat to, encouraging a connection with our natural surroundings,” says Jane Wright.
The trend can be achieved with the use of authentic, natural materials, like timber wall panelling for an organic, textured backdrop, travertine for floor tiles, stone plant pots and ceramics. Using colour, such as browns, leafy greens and golds, is another option. “The emphasis is on selecting natureinspired colours, pieces and materials that create tranquil and serene spaces,” says Jane.

SMART SET-UPS
Smart features and devices have already made their way into most homes, with nearly two thirds having at least one smart home product*. And according to the 2024 James Hardie ‘Modern Homes Forecast’, we’ll see more: “This technological landscape will see users demanding higherquality products and more choice and flexibility, driving innovation and customisation in housing design.”
ALL ABOUT WALLS
Security is beginning to integrate facial and voice recognition and amp up motion detection, while locks are being improved with PINs and fingerprint recognition. Appliances include fridges with interior cameras so food supplies can be checked, ovens whose temperatures and timers can be set from your phone, and rangehoods that determine how hard they need to work. There are even voice-activated machines to brew your morning coffee. In the bathroom, showers will automatically turn on to the right temperature and LED mirrors will display time and offer a choice of light colours. Thermostats will monitor energy use and adjust to set rooms to consistent temperatures. And if geolocation is enabled, they’ll track your smartphone to know if you’re home, adjusting to suit.
6MOVING WITH THE TIMES
Fashion trends and technology updates aside, external forces such as industry regulation impact building practices. New homes must meet increased minimum energyefficiency ratings, which influences design decisions and the comfort of your home. Topping the list of considerations for consumers is the transition from gas appliances for cooking and heating to electric
Easy-to-install interior lining boards are such a versatile material for anyone looking to transform a room quick smart. With many different profiles, timber types and options to paint in your choice of colour, there’s a product to suit every style of home. Panels can be used as a feature (in lieu of a bedhead or as a backing inside a bookcase), below a dado rail, or on a whole wall and ceiling section to define a space within an open-plan zone. Beyond its aesthetic value, panelling can bring both acoustic and thermal insulation benefits – and cleverly disguise imperfections in existing walls.

Benchtop materials are also under review, following a SafeWork Australia report linking engineered stone products to incurable lung disease in workers exposed to particles during the manufacturing process. Those planning to update or build can look at alternative materials, such as timber, tiles, stainless steel and custom-cast concrete. New and improved laminates meet any interior palette and budget objective. And if you’re splurging on a forever home, consider marble and granite.

IN OUR KITCHENS
Our desire to create homes that are individual is a key driver to saying goodbye to the all-white kitchen and bringing colour in, says Kaboodle Kitchen’s Giorgia Manenti.
“Shades of blue and green, once considered daring choices in kitchens, now effortlessly integrate,” she says.
“Inspired by nature, these colourways blend with most interior palettes while also adding personality and charm.”
Cool metals are making a comeback with chrome, aluminium and steel bringing a new shine. “Adding a sleek and contemporary vibe, cool metals enhance a kitchen’s aesthetic appeal,” says Giorgia. “Most appliances are available in chrome, steel or aluminium finishes, allowing you to match your hardware and accessories to maintain cohesion.”

AUSTRALIAN-MADE SURFACE PROTECTION
Keep your floors pristine during renos – of any size or type – with Visy Tread
Mess is an inevitability on the site of any construction or renovation project – you can’t create something beautiful without a bit of dust and splashed paint. But in order to keep spills contained (without creating a permanent Jackson Pollock homage) and prevent scratches on your beautiful floors, you need surface protection you can trust. Visy Tread safeguards against worksite scuffs and spills, and because it’s made in Australia from 100 per cent recycled materials, it combines durability with sustainability.
Got you covered
Unlike alternatives, such as plasticbacked drop sheets, Visy Tread is breathable, allowing enough airflow for newly finished floors to cure (and letting you walk on them sooner), while being durable enough to help to keep your brand-new surface safe from harm. Visy Tread forms a physical barrier against scratches, scuffs, smudges and general grubbiness, but it’s also tough enough to tackle wet stuff – the moisture-resistant material catches paint drips and other spills, so accidents don’t ruin your DIY day.
Projects great and small
Whatever the type and scale of your project, there’s a Visy Tread product to suit. The Visy Tread Temporary rolls are ideal for home renovations, offering medium protection. For longer-term renovations or commercial work, where there will be a lot of foot traffic, go straight for Visy Tread Heavy Duty. For both types, confident coverage is fast and easy. Just roll it out and cut to fit – there’s no wrestling with awkward plastic sheets that don’t quite fit the space. Once you’re done, it can go in the recycling. Or you can roll it up for another day, making this cost-effective solution even easier on the budget.
3 Visy Tread ‘Painters’ 935mm temporary surface protection, $34.99/45m, I/N: 0619320 (available in selected stores from mid-July).
A PERFECT CIRCLE
Tread is made by Visy, circular economy specialist and one of Australia’s most trusted resource recovery companies. Visy collects recycling from millions of households and businesses and turns it into new products like Tread, which is manufactured right here in Australia from 100 per cent recycled content. Tread can be rolled up ready to be reused, or popped straight into the kerbside recycling when you’re done.

Up your style game with homemade pieces inspired by mid-century furniture design
Transform a plain-looking bookshelf into a designer display by dressing it up with a curvy cut-out and side cladding made from budget-friendly plywood, finished with chalk-effect paint. For instructions, turn to page 44.
1 This five-shelf bookcase is 1800mm high, 800mm wide and 280mm deep, but you can adjust the cladding measurements to fit any size.
2 Using one sheet of plywood minimises wastage and is kinder to the budget. It creates a join halfway down one side of the bookcase, but this becomes invisible when filled and painted.
3 For easier handling, have the plywood cut in store to 1800mm long.

TIPS
1 Preparation is key for a professional paint finish, so use a plastic primer and spray paint on the PVC pipes and joiners.
2 Leave paint to dry fully before handling the parts and be careful not to scratch the finish with your fingernails, watch or jewellery.
3 Measure twice and only cut once! But this 3m x 1.2m pup tent cover is cut from a 3.6m x 3m tarp, so there is room for error.
CANINE CAMP OUT!
Thanks to its slot-together construction and bold palette of primary colours, this DIY doghouse has a cute Lego-like vibe. Designed for a mid-sized dog, you can scale it up or down to suit your canine and it’s a super-fun project you can get done quickly. A genuine off-the-shelf hardware hack, the frame is made from inexpensive PVC plumbing pipes cut with a humble hacksaw and transformed with spray paint, then connected with elbow and three-way joints – no glue needed! The tent cover is made from tarpaulin and wraps around the three sides of the frame, providing a groundcover for a mattress pad. Trimmed with cloth tape to give a neat edge and prevent fraying, the tent cover has slits for the pipes and tabs that wrap around and are secured with Velcro. It’s a spray, slot and stick job!

Second life
Transform a tired item into a stunning centrepiece with Porter’s Paints Revive Furniture Paint
Whether you’ve discovered a hidden gem at a second-hand store or have a cherished piece in need of a refresh, there’s never been a better time to explore the joys of upcycling. Take a piece that is past its best and turn it into a focal point of your decor, using Porter’s Paints Revive Furniture Paint and Revive Metallic for small projects. Even if you’re a novice DIYer, it will be simple to achieve a high-end finish you’ll love. Revive Furniture Paint has a built-in wax infusion that promises to deliver a durable finish without the hassle of extra clear finishes or wax, while the self-levelling formula minimises the appearance of brush marks for a smoother finish than chalk paints. The entire Revive range is also low odour, and completed items are easy to keep clean – dirt just wipes away.
Choose from 12 beautiful satin-finish colours and eight luxurious metallic looks, which stand alone or team perfectly together.
YOU WILL NEED...
Choose the Revive Furniture Paint or Metallic colour for your project. One 400ml jar of Furniture Paint covers about 5sqm, and one 100ml jar of Metallic covers 1sqm. Use fine/medium abrasive paper for prep. Apply the paint with high-quality paintbrushes in sizes appropriate for your project, or a microfibre roller to apply Revive Furniture Paint to larger items like tables and doors.
1 Porter’s Paints ‘Revive’ furniture paint in Salt Wattle, $44.90/400ml, I/N: 0569235.
Remove any existing hardware. Thoroughly clean the piece, then lightly sand and wipe away dust. For best results, prime before painting.
2
FIRST COAT APPLICATION
Paint a thin coat in the direction of the wood grain using long, even strokes. Allow the first coat to dry for a minimum of two hours.
3
SECOND COAT APPLICATION
Gently sand any drips. Apply the second coat. Dry for eight hours. Reattach hardware. No clear finish or sealing wax is needed. (Note: Metallics dry times differ.)
Visit your local Bunnings store and dive into the colours to start your project! Scan the QR code above for more information and an application video.

PORCH PIZZAZZ
This project can be achieved over a weekend, to mend tiles, prep and paint, then stencil. The result? A smart, usable outdoor space
1 Wearing protective gear, sweep and pressure-clean the tiles. In a bucket, mix one part sealed surface cleaner into five parts water and scrub the porch with a deck brush. Rinse off with the pressure washer and leave to dry. Tip: Before cleaning, wet surrounding foliage to dilute any solution that spills over.
2 To repair chipped tiles, wear disposable gloves to knead a multipurpose epoxy into a uniform colour. While it’s still warm, work quickly to push it into the chipped section of tile, shaping to fit and squaring the edges with a scraper. Leave to cure for an hour, then sand smooth with 120-grit abrasive paper.

Keep in mind…
■ Wear a mask, protective eyewear, gloves and waterproof footwear, and cover skin when working with cleaning solutions and a pressure washer.
■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets, and wear safety gear while painting.
3 Use a ready-mix exterior grout to fill damaged grout and cracks, working in one direction to smooth into the gaps with a small rubber squeegee. Wipe away excess with a clean, damp sponge. Wash out the sponge, wring to remove water, then wipe away the grout haze and leave to dry.
4 Mask around house walls and posts with painter’s tape. Mix up sealed surface primer with the supplied additive and pour into a tray. To apply, cut in around the edges with a brush, then complete with a roller and leave to dry. Tip: The primer is a membrane that goes on pale blue but dries clear.
5 To apply the base colour, cut in with a brush, then complete with a roller and leave to dry. Apply a second coat and leave to dry overnight. Tip: We used the Dulux ‘Concrete & Paving’ system including self-sealing finish with anti-slip additive.
6 Use a utility knife to cut cardboard the same size as the tiles with a cutout in the middle for the stencil pattern. Centre the stencil on the cardboard and secure with painter’s tape, reinforcing around the edges. To transfer, hold the template on each tile, stencil face down, and dab on the stencil colour with a round chalk-paint brush. Leave to dry overnight.

Build a nesting pair of sleek and slatted timber tables
Tools & materials
n Safety equipment (mask, eye and ear protection)
n Mitre saw
n Tape measure and pencil
n 180-grit abrasive paper with sanding block
n 10mm packers
n 400mm framing square
n 600mm quick-grip clamps
n Combination square
n Drill with 8G countersinking and driver bits
1 Using a mitre saw, neaten the ends of the timber lengths by 1-2mm. For the large table, check 15 slats are the same length, and cut another into two 570mm rails. For the small table, cut eight slats to 900mm, and two 290mm rails from the offcuts. Sand to round over the edges and smooth any breakout from the cuts.
2 Using packers at both ends, set out 15 1200mm slats against the 570mm rails and eight 900mm slats against the 290mm rails. Adjust with a framing square and clamp both ends. Using a combination square, mark 200mm from the ends on the large table, 125mm on the small table, and a centre line along each rail.
3 Position the rails inside the marks, 10mm in from the sides. Predrill into the end slats on either side with a countersinking bit. Remove the rail to apply adhesive along the end slats, then reposition to secure with 50mm screws. Countersink and secure all the remaining slats. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth.

4 Using a framing square, mark the timber panel with two 570mm x 280mm legs for the large table and two 290mm x 340mm legs for the small table. Position panel on offcuts to cut with a circular saw and straightedge. Tip: Begin with a shallow cut, setting the blade 5mm deeper for each pass.
5 At the top of each leg, mark a line 10mm in from the edge, then position against the corresponding rails to mark offset holes into the gaps to predrill with a countersinking bit. Sand all over. Apply adhesive along the slats and rails, clamp the legs in position and secure with 40mm screws.
6 Smooth over the screws in the legs with filler, leave it to dry, then sand off the excess. Wipe all over with a clean damp cloth to remove dust. Beginning with the tables upside down, apply two coats of water-based varnish, leaving to dry after each. Tip: Apply varnish between the slats with a brush, then finish with a roller.
Keep in mind…
■ Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask when cutting and sanding timber.
■ When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear.
■ Do not climb or stand on the tables. To move them, lift rather than drag.
A CASE FOR CURVES
Transform a basic bookcase with chic cladding
STEP 1: BUILD BOOKCASE
1 Assemble the bookcase, keeping adjustable shelves and wall anchors to install later. Tip: Apply adhesive along raw edges, tighten fasteners using a screwdriver and hold plastic joiners to the backing with cloth tape while positioning them.
2 Position the plywood sheet on sawhorses. Use a framing square to mark the front, side A and side B pieces (see diagrams, opposite), then cut using a jigsaw with a clamped straightedge.
STEP 2: CUT PLYWOOD
STEP 3: MARK ARCHES
3 Mark cutting lines and a centre line on the front cladding (see diagrams, right), and draw arches using a framing square positioned on the centre line with a screw pivot in the inner corner.
STEP 4: MAKE CUT-OUT
4 Drill a 10mm starter hole inside an arch. Cut with a jigsaw, clamping the centre to prevent it from falling through. Sand the cladding to smooth all over and remove breakout along cut edges.
STEP 5: ATTACH CLADDING
5 Apply adhesive to cladding and clamp in place. Use a countersinking bit to predrill into the corners, securing with 20mm screws. Smooth over the screws and the side B join with filler, leaving to dry. Sand off excess filler and wipe with a damp cloth.
STEP 6: SAND AND PAINT
6 Mask along the front of the fixed shelves. Use a mini roller to apply primer and two coats of chalk paint to the cladding, leaving to dry after each coat. Secure bookcase to the wall with anchors and install adjustable shelves. ●

Coming up roses
Now is the time to get active, whether you’re a dedicated grower or more ‘rose-curious’!
Words Roger Fox
Winter is prime time for roses. It’s when newbies get planted and oldies get pruned to stimulate a cycle of growth and flowers. For gardeners, it’s the time when a fabulous selection of bare-root rose plants appears in nurseries, including new releases and old favourites. Whatever you choose, you’ll be richly rewarded in the months to come.
GROWING ESSENTIALS
Roses are tough, long-lived plants that grow in most climate zones, but they do have a few essential needs, according to Reece Boden of Monbulk Rose, Tree and Shrub Farm. He explains, “Eight or more hours of direct sunlight a day is ideal for roses to thrive. With fewer than six the growth ‘stretches’ and is weaker, and they won’t flower as well.”
Reece’s other top tips for flourishing roses are to plant them near a sunny wall, where they will benefit from the reflected light and heat on cooler days, and to avoid overwatering.
“If the soil feels dry, give them a good long soak, then you can let them dry out again,” he says.
“They don’t like wet feet!”
A steady supply of nutrients is also key. Add plenty of organic matter to whatever type of garden soil you have, advises horticulturist Angie Thomas of Yates. “To help give the rose a great start, improve the soil in the planting hole with blood and bone or pelletised chicken manure,” she says.
And, for the best blooms, feed with fertiliser three times a year in spring, summer and autumn.

A bare-root rose makes a lovely gift for gardeners
PLANTING BARE-ROOT ROSES
Many roses are bought and planted in winter as bare-root plants. While they look a little uninspiring – a cluster of thorny sticks with plastic-wrapped roots – remember they are dormant during the winter months, and are just waiting for spring when they will burst into leaf and bloom.
“Buying bare-root roses is not only cheaper than potted ones in bloom, they’ve also already been pruned for you,” says Reece Boden. Plus, they’re less likely to suffer transplant shock.
When you get your plant home, unwrap it and shake off the medium around the roots, put it straight into a bucket of water so it doesn’t dry out and let it soak for up to a day.
Step 1 Dig a hole wide enough for the full spread of the roots, and deep enough so the bud union (the knobbly swelling on the stem) ends up a few centimetres above soil level. Tip: If you haven’t already prepared your soil, mix cow manure and compost through the excavated soil.
Step 2 Using the excavated soil, form a mound at the bottom of the hole. Untangle and spread the roots over the mound, holding the plant upright
“Once roses are pruned, it’s time for a winter clean-up spray with lime sulphur to break the life cycle of pests and diseases like scale and powdery mildew”
Angie Thomas/horticulturist
and adding soil if needed, so the bud union sits at the right height.
Step 3 Backfill the hole halfway, add water, then let the puddle drain. Fill the hole with soil, firming it with your hands to remove any air pockets. Water again with a shower spray. Tip: Don’t fertilise when planting. Instead, wait until spring for signs of leaf growth, then sprinkle on some rose food, water in well and mulch. Check out the amazing range of roses at bunnings.com.au/roses
Keep in mind...
■ Wear gloves and a mask when working with potting mix, mulch and compost.
■ When handling thorny plants or pruning, wear protective gear such as gloves and long sleeves.
■ Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

POTTED BEAUTIES
Most roses grow well in containers, giving you the flexibility to put them in the sunniest spot in your garden – and you can buy and plant potted varieties all year round. Reece Boden says small-growing floribundas, miniatures, modern shrubs and groundcovers are ideal, as are some hybrid tea roses – check the label information before you buy. For the best results, Angie Thomas advises using a pot that’s about 40cm wide and using a premium potting mix. Feed periodically with a liquid fertiliser formulated for roses, from early spring to autumn.
“Roses grow quickly, so if you ‘dead head’ spent blooms regularly you could ideally get four or five mass flowerings a year”
Reece Boden/Monbulk Rose, Tree and Shrub Farm
Roses bear their flowers on new growth. So when they’re cut back in winter, they respond by pushing out vigorous new stems in spring, which quickly produce buds. If you live in a frost-prone area, delay pruning until all danger of frost has passed, so you won’t risk the new growth getting burnt off. It is all about rejuvenating the plant and –essentially – keeping it young. Here are the basics for pruning established bush and shrub roses. (Climbing, rambling and mini roses often have different pruning requirements for best results.)
1 Cut the whole bush back by about a third to a half, making each cut just above a plump, outward-facing growth bud. Use clean, sharp secateurs to reduce the risk of disease and so you don’t tear the bark.
2 Remove any dead canes, cutting them at the plant’s base. Also remove any sick or spindly growth, or branches growing where you don’t want them, and open up the centre of the bush.
3 Bin all prunings, in case they’re harbouring disease, then treat the bare plants with a spray of lime sulphur and/or pest oil to clean up any fungal spores or dormant bugs that might be hanging around. ●

Boston fern has lacy leaves that form a lovely weeping shape
Maidenhair fern is prized for its soft and airy lime-green foliage
Frond embrace
Grow ferns indoors and let their bright leaves lighten up winter’s gloom
BOSTON FERN (Nephrolepis exaltata)
Big, lush and beautiful, this popular fern with its cascading fronds is perfect for adding a touch of fresh vibrancy to an indoor space. Grow it in a pot or hanging basket and elevate on a plant stand or hang from the ceiling to fully appreciate its volume and beauty. Give it a spot with bright filtered light and keep the soil moist.
MAIDENHAIR FERN (Adiantum raddianum)
The delicate fan-shaped leaves on black, wiry stems give the impression this fern is floating on air. It prefers a position with bright indirect light and needs regular watering – it will die back quite dramatically if adequate moisture is not maintained. If this does happen, cut back the dead fronds and resume watering regularly, and it should bounce back.
AUTUMN FERN (Dryopteris erythrosora)
A small fern, this forms a neat 50cm clump, making it ideal for a coffee table or book shelf. It thrives in a bright spot out of direct sunlight and needs moist, but not soaking wet, soil. Dry air may cause the leaf edges to turn brown. Group with other plants to help maintain humidity or put the pot on top of a saucer filled with pebbles and water.
SILVER LADY FERN (Blechnum gibbum ‘Silver Lady’)
This fern initially forms as a clump of fronds but eventually develops a slender, brown-black trunk with a crown of arching leaves that grow to between 60cm and 90cm long. Its striking appearance makes it a fabulous feature plant. Position in a warm, brightly lit spot out of direct sunlight and water often to keep the soil moist. ●

THE Pet
Cute, but not cuddly
The word ‘axolotl’ means water monster in Aztec and they are also known as Mexican walking fish. If you’re looking for a different kind of pet, these names are a sign you’re on the right track!
They are not fish though – axolotls are amphibians and have delicate skin instead of scales, so not a pet you’ll handle often. They take a bit more looking after than fish but can live up to 10 years and grow to 30 centimetres. They need a big tank – at least 65 litres – with a minimum of 15 centimetres of water and a couple of hidey holes on a sandy base. The water needs to be around 18°C with a pH close to seven, and should be cleaned out regularly.
Living up to their monstrous image, axolotls are carnivores and their favourite food is bloodworms. Handfeed them if you dare!
BIRD IS THE WORD
More than 10 per cent of Australian households have at least one bird1, and the most common reason for owning one is for company. For a feathered friend that chats back, follow these five tips for teaching your bird to talk.
1 Choose your breed Budgies, cockatiels and Alexandrine parrots are known talkers. It’s also important to bond with your bird before you start training them.
2 Keep it simple Start with a clear ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ when entering and leaving the room. Repetition and consistency are key, as is excitement in your voice to get their attention.
3 Associate words with actions For example, say ‘apple’ when giving a slice of apple or ‘up’ when putting them on your finger.
4 Reward your bird Give them treats and affection when they start mimicking you.
5 Be patient It can take many weeks or even months, but once they start talking, you might have to watch what you’re saying around them!
LIVING LARGE
1 I live in… Miles, Queensland.
2 My preferred mode of transport… is definitely walking.
3 I show love by… drooling on you.
4 My best friend… is Peg, the new puppy.
5 I get a bit grumpy… when the puppy bites my ears.
6 My perfect day involves… a walk, a bone and a nap.
7 My favourite activity… is looking for kangaroos on my morning walk.
8 My wind-down routine includes… dinner, a play in the sprinkler, a back scratch and bed.
9 Winter days are for… sleeping in the sun. This big boy is a slobbery, sun-loving softie

Kids clamouring for a guinea pig? Before you cave in, read this 101 guide
Have you ever seen a guinea pig ‘popcorn’? The twisting leap in the air is a sign they’re happy and is just one of the cute antics you can expect from these affectionate and intelligent pets. Part of the cavy family (no relation to pigs), guinea pigs are tiny balls of cuteness that will win the hearts of children and adults alike. But, before you commit, brush up on these basic facts.
CUTE AND CUDDLY
Guinea pigs make great pets, but they’re nervous little critters who need gentle handling. With time and patience, though, they become more affectionate. Lil Smith, shelter manager at the Australian Cavy Sanctuary (australiancavysanctuary.org), says some guinea pigs even give kisses and gentle licks. “They bond to their owners and can learn their own name as well as many other tricks,” says Lil.
TWO’S COMPANY
As herd animals, guinea pigs need the company of other guinea pigs. “You can keep girls in same-sex herds,
or boys in bonded pairs if they are not desexed,” advises Lil. “Never mix more than one desexed male with a herd of females because even if they are desexed, a male will attack other males if there are females around. And never put males and females that aren’t desexed together because they can procreate very fast!”
Guinea pigs should never be housed with other animals, especially rabbits and birds, as they both carry diseases that can be fatal to cavies.
MUST-HAVES
The ideal guinea pig housing is indoors on a solid floor and should measure at least 1.2m x 60cm for two (add 60cm2 for each additional guinea pig). They also need supervised outdoor time to get vitamin D from the sun in a secure outdoor run that has some shelter and doesn’t have wire floors.
“Good-quality, sweet-smelling grassy hay is vital for guinea pigs’ health,” says Lil. “It provides fibre for gut function and silica for grinding their teeth because their teeth continue to grow. They will eat their body size in hay each day. Supplement with fresh grass and add a handful of vegies high in vitamin C per guinea pig per day – capsicum, parsley, celery and cauliflower leaves, plus small amounts of broccoli, sweet potato, spinach and carrot. Don’t feed them potatoes, onions, grains or seeds.”
CAN I COMMIT?
Guinea pigs are best suited to families who are prepared to handle their pets regularly and give them time outside their enclosure every day. Long-haired breeds will require daily grooming. You will also need to keep the cage clean (spot-clean daily; thoroughly clean weekly) to minimise mites, lice and other diseases.
A well-looked-after guinea pig can live up to 10 years, so be prepared to provide long-term care. In return, you’ll be rewarded with years of joy – and lots of popcorning!

■ When sanding and painting, always wear safety equipment (eye protection and mask) and ensure the room is well ventilated.
■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
■ Any plumbing or electrical works must be carried out by a licensed tradie.
■ Always use the right ladder for the job, make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (for example both feet and one hand) on it at all times and make sure another person is nearby in case you need assistance.
■ A platform ladder may be a safer, more practical option when you need to have a paste tray within easy reach.
■ Our room set-up is for photographic purposes only. When renovating wet areas, always check the works adhere to waterproofing requirements.

Clutter buster
Bring the storage cart to the mess!
STEP 1: CUT AND SAND PLY
1 Following the cutting list, measure and mark the components on both sheets of plywood and cut out using a circular saw with straightedge. Or, have the 12mm plywood cut to size in store and use a sharp handsaw to cut the 3mm sheet. Sand cut edges using 180-grit abrasive paper; wipe away dust.
STEP 3: BUILD THE BOX
3 On the top and base, mark 5mm in from sides and 10mm in from edges, then predrill with an 8G countersinking bit. Apply adhesive to sides, position between top and base, then secure with 35mm screws; clamp until set. Fill all screw holes with timber filler, allow to dry, then sand smooth (touch up paint if needed).
SO VERSATILE!
Made with wallet-friendly plywood, this unit holds three washing baskets but can be scaled up or down to suit. It’s a versatile piece that can go in the laundry, garage or anywhere. It makes great toy storage, too, especially if you choose colourful baskets!
Keep in mind…
■ When using power tools and cutting and sanding timber, work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask and ear and eye protection.
■ Keep all paint and adhesives out of reach of children and pets.
■ The cart is designed to hold lightweight items only – do not climb, ride, stand or sit on it.
STEP 2: PRIME AND PAINT
2 From the base of the sides, measure upwards and mark lines at 300mm, 600mm and 900mm. Apply woodworking adhesive to the rails and attach to the sides at the marked locations; clamp until set. Apply primer and two coats of paint to all components, leaving to dry after each coat.
STEP 4: ADD BACK AND CASTORS
4 Lay the box face down, position the back and clamp. Starting from the top, hammer nails at even intervals (about 120mm) around the edges to secure. Stand box upside down, mark the castor holes in each corner of the base and secure with 15mm screws. Stand right way up and insert the baskets on the rails. ●

It was used by Italian artisans in Venice in the 1500s to create durable, beautiful floors – for patios and terraces – out of recycled chips of marble, granite and quartz cast in a binder such as clay or cement, then sealed to give it a sheen. This created a sustainable and stunning material that endures to this day. In recent years, terrazzo has been used for walls and benchtops. To get a terrazzo-inspired look without the price tag, you need nothing more than a blank wall and paint sample pots!
You will need
n Safety equipment (eye protection, mask and gloves)
n Drop sheet
n 25mm, 18mm and 12mm paintbrushes
n Sample pots of paint in five colours
n Clear spray sealer
Pick it up! Sample pots are the ideal size for this type of paint project
1 Working on a drop sheet to protect the floor, use 25mm and 18mm paintbrushes and five different colours to paint small irregular shapes on the wall – and returns if it’s a blade wall – to create a terrazzo-like pattern. Leave to dry.
2 Apply another coat to the painted shapes and allow to dry. Go back over the painted shapes with 12mm paintbrushes to tidy any edges, if needed.
3 Wearing eye protection, gloves and a face mask, spray the wall with a coat of clear gloss to seal the painted design. ●

STEP 1: PREP THE CART SIDES
1 Measure up for drawers, allowing 13mm either side for drawer slides. Dismantle the cart, sand parts to be painted and clean with sugar soap wipes. Apply primer and two coats of cabinet paint, leaving to dry after each. Spray-paint the handle. On the sides, position pairs of drawer slides 20mm above fixed shelves and predrill with a 2mm bit to secure with the supplied screws.
STEP 3: CUT THE DRAWER MITRES
3 Mark the drawer frame pieces to exact length, mitring the ends at 45° with the rebate on the inside. Sand to remove breakout. Position and tape together as a template to mark drawer bases on 7mm plywood, with 10mm less each side, then cut using a circular saw with straightedge. Dry-fit to check the bases fit in the rebates.

Keep in mind…
■ When using power tools and painting, always wear the recommended safety gear and work in a well-ventilated area.
■ Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
■ Do not place food directly on a painted surface; always use a platter or plate.
STEP 2: ROUND-OVER AND REBATE
2 Using a mitre box and handsaw, cut lengths of pine for the drawer fronts, backs and sides, adding 50mm each to allow for mitres. Clamp to a workbench, then mark 10mm in from the edge to make a 9mm-deep rebate using a trim router with a straight bit. Flip and use a round-over bit along the opposite edge.
STEP 4: ASSEMBLE THE DRAWERS
4 Apply adhesive to joints and rebates, assemble and tape around the frame, wipe excess and leave to dry. Tap nails into mitres from the sides. Sand the drawers, wipe away dust and apply tung oil with a cloth. Position the drawer slide internal members 20mm up from the base, and predrill to secure with supplied screws. Reassemble the cart, then install the drawers.

Lightly sand the tray and wipe away dust. Apply primer and two coats of paint (we used Dulux Instigate) around the sides and underneath. Cut self-adhesive film to fit the base and attach, smoothing any air bubbles. Mark holes for the handles, drill through with a 4mm bit and secure with the supplied snap-off screws. ●

DIY BY DESIGN
Turn your how-to dreams into can-do projects with a workshop kitted out for success
Words Caroline Botting
When you’re a lover of DIY, you know it’s important to create, repair and experiment at home. Whether it’s a bench in the garage or an entire shed, your personal workspace needs to encourage productivity and creativity.
Mitchell Mclean is one of the experts guiding Bunnings Workshop community members with practical tips and information to help them achieve their DIY goals (workshop.bunnings.com. au). He says the key to a functional workshop lies in organisation. “Having the right tools at your fingertips saves time, while a well-ordered environment reduces the risk of hazards – no tripping over cords or sharp objects lying around,” he says. “Plus, it’s just much more pleasant to work in a clean, streamlined space.”
STORE IT AWAY
If your space is big or small, it’s always important to create a workshop that is effective and safe. Ozito’s Bryan Jo says the way to achieve this is great storage. “By reducing clutter and debris you’ll reduce the risk of accidents,” he says. “Efficiency improves as tools and materials are easily accessible, minimising time spent searching for items. Organised storage also prevents damage to equipment.”
Everything needs to have its place, which is why the mainstays of workshop organisation are pegboards, shelves, drawers and cabinets. “It’s important to arrange your tools according to their function and how often you use them,” says
“ Keeping your workshop clean makes it easier to find the tools you need“
Bryan Jo/Ozito
Mitchell. “There’s no point having a tool close at hand that you use infrequently when one you use daily could take its place. Pegboards are essential for keeping your most-used tools within arm’s reach so you can readily access them, and cabinets are perfect for storing larger tools you use less often.”
Tool holders are great for keeping screwdrivers, pliers and other hand tools organised and easily accessible.
THE BENCH MARK
A dedicated, solid and flat workbench is the foundation of your workspace. It’s where plans take shape and projects come to life. Whether portable or
built-in, ensure your bench has a sturdy, durable surface. This is a place that will sustain hammering, sawing, painting, sanding and assembling. When creating a space for your workbench, ensure it fits comfortably without obstructing walkways or other work areas. Also ensure it’s well lit. Include a powerstrip so portable lights and, of course, power tools can easily be plugged into an electrical source.
A TIGHT SPACE
For many DIYers space is at a premium, so plan around what you have. Use fold-away benches and overhead and under-bench storage and hooks. Opt for multipurpose tools and declutter regularly. By using vertical spaces and adaptable storage systems, even small spaces can create big projects, says Rack It’s Lachlan King. “For example, the modularity of the Rack It 400kg and 1000kg systems allows DIY enthusiasts to choose the width, height and depth of their storage, tailoring it to their requirements,” he says.
IN THE ZONE
Creating work zones for different tasks can streamline your projects. Mitchell advises a section for woodworking, painting and assembly, and keeping
UP YOUR STORAGE GAME
● Do you really need that many screwdrivers or three hammers? Apply the ‘one in, one out’ rule and donate unwanted tools to charity.
● Use a magnetic pick-up tool to gather those pesky dropped screws and nails. Cover the end with a plastic bag and seal for when you need a spare!
● Pegboards need not be pokey. Buy full sheets and use them to cover an entire wall.
● Create pegboard cubby holes with cut PVC pipe to store pencils, cable ties, blades and more.
● Use clear, stacked and labelled jars to store screws, nails, washers and other small loose items.
● Get onto Pinterest! It has an array of storage ideas for every tool, paint, fastener and fixing.
tools and materials for each task at hand. “Work zones are as important in the workshop as they are in a kitchen. They’re a productivity driver, allowing you to divide and dedicate specific areas for different tasks,” he explains. “Having a designated spot for each job and being able to move fluidly between them helps you stay focused, minimises time wastage and keeps you on track.”

STEP 1: CUT THE TOP
● Table made using Practa Solutions 2200mm x 600mm x 26mm acacia timber benchtop, $109, I/N: 0216266•†; Adoored 360mm x 53mm x 53mm raw wood square furniture legs, $21.77 each, I/N: 0197162†, and 3/8" (9.5mm) vertical leg plates, $2.50/pack of 2, I/N: 0101571.
1 To make a 52mm-thick tabletop, use a framing square to measure and mark two 1070mm lengths from the timber benchtop and cut with a circular saw. Join them with construction adhesive, edges flush. Clamp and use a 2mm bit to predrill 100mm in from each edge, then secure with 40mm screws.

STEP 2: PRIME TIMBER
2 Smooth the tabletop cuts with 120-grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Working on a drop sheet, use a roller to apply primer over all sides of the tabletop and the legs, then leave to dry. Tip: Loosely twist the leg plates onto the legs and position upside-down to dry.
STEP 3: CUT SHEETS TO FIT
3 For the legs, cut four mosaics into sheets of six by four tiles and four single rows of four, keeping the offcuts. For the tabletop, cut one sheet in half. For the table edges, use single rows. Tip: Keep tiles joined, cutting the mesh from the back with a utility knife.
STEP 5: ATTACH LEGS
5 Flip the tabletop to measure in 90mm from the corners and use a leg plate to mark the holes. Use a 2mm bit to predrill the screw holes and a 6mm bit for the centre holes. Secure with the supplied screws. Twist in the legs, adjusting to be square with the top.
STEP 7: CLEAN TILES
7 Clean off excess grout with a damp (not wet) sponge, working diagonally across the joints. Frequently rinse the sponge in a bucket of clean water, changing it often. Leave to cure overnight, then buff off the grout haze with a cloth. Apply tile and grout sealer with a mini roller, leave 15 minutes, then reapply and leave to dry overnight.
STEP 4: GLUE MOSAICS
4 With cut sheets face down, apply adhesive to the legs, press onto a row of six, turning to finish each side, then add the top row, keeping the gaps even. Apply adhesive to the tabletop and press on tiles.
Clad the edges with single rows and offcuts; leave to dry.
STEP 6: GROUT TILES
6 In a small bucket, mix half a cup each of paint and water. Add eight cups of grout, mixing and adjusting with water as needed to achieve a toothpaste consistency. Work grout into the tile joints with a float, scraping off excess. Leave for 15 minutes.
Keep in mind…
■ When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear.
■ When painting and using tile adhesives or grout, always wear eye protection, a mask and gloves and work in a well-ventilated area.
■ Keep all paint, adhesives, grout and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
■ When choosing indoor plants, always read the label as some can be toxic to children and pets.

Why you need it
Small square tiles were the surface material of the moment in the 1980s, and are enjoying a comeback in the form of geometric tiled tables. These retro pieces are not only gorgeous to look at but superbly practical – spills just wipe away! And today’s mosaic sheets make applying the tiles a breeze.
