WALL POWER Wallpaper can make a powerful statement in a room. To be confident of feature wall success, follow these expert tips
1
Assess the space Think about the function of the room and any existing features. “Consider the furniture, lighting and flooring, and look at colour schemes that will complement these,” says Paula Taylor, trend and style expert at Superfresco Easy. Master colour “Once you have chosen a statement wallpaper, look up the balancing hue opposite to your chosen colour on the colour wheel,” says Corrine Brown, colour therapist and founder of Institute of Holistic Therapies Australia. This will help you choose complementary colours for the rest of the room. Have a plan B If you’re nervous about committing to a bold wallpaper, Paula suggests opting for a product that’s easily removed and won’t damage walls. ‘Paste the wall’ paper peels off with ease – ideal for renters or decorating novices. Look up Contrast neutral walls with a statement wallpaper on the ceiling. Paula notes this unconventional ‘feature wall’ is becoming increasingly popular.

Asbestos This may be present in houses built from the 1940s to 1990. Any materials containing asbestos must be removed by professionals. Lead Homes built and renovated before 1997, and especially before 1965, may contain lead paint, which can be toxic when disturbed. Consult a professional if the paint is flaking. See bunnings.com.au/ health-and-safety for more information.
Mould Inhaling mould particles can cause respiratory infections. Ensure you wear a respirator when dealing with mould. Dust Demolition can create harmful dust particles including silica, wood dust, asbestos and lead. Avoid inhalation by using a respirator when on site. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) Paints, thinners, adhesives and aerosols, as well as some furniture and carpet, may contain VOCs. Safety tip

Secure the headboard with fixings suitable for your wall type. Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipework, and turn off the power
o turn a so-so room into a stunner, all you need is paint and a little imagination. The beauty of paint is you can let your creativity run wild: go bold with colour, create shapes and patterns, and it can all be covered over if it doesn’t work out as envisioned. Get it right, though, and you’ve created an eye-catching feature that announces the space as utterly and uniquely yours. We’ve shown how you can take the feature wall concept to the floor with a painted pattern; turn a favourite colour three-dimensional using plaster; enliven a living room with intersecting shapes; and define a study zone by creating the illusion of a dado rail. Take these ideas as a starting point, put your own spin on it and have fun!
PRO TIP To coat a wall, pour paint into a wide tray, dip the roller in the paint, then lift and roll with full rotations over the tray’s platform until evenly saturated. Begin at top left of the wall and use a W motion over a metre square to evenly distribute paint

Create a bulb display
Bring on the bulbs A well-planned planting scheme can give you a swathe of gorgeous blooms, year after year
For a bright and showy display in spring, plant tulips in autumn
P
repare and plant bulbs now for a glorious display of golden daffodils, vibrant tulips, fragrant hyacinths and more! Blooms emerge at various times from early winter, beginning with daffodils and jonquils, followed by tulips and freesias and finishing on a high with bluebells and bearded irises. Plant a variety of different bulbs so you can delight in the floral show for longer. bunnings |

Timing is everything Most bulbs should be planted in autumn, so plan early. With tulips and hyacinths, you may need to pre-chill them to prepare the flower buds. “Pop the bulbs in a paper bag and place them in the crisper of your fridge six weeks prior to planting,” advises Chloe Williams, assistant manager at Blooming Bulbs. If you live in a subtropical zone, you can do this with all your bulbs. “Be sure to label them or keep them away from your vegies to avoid the risk of them being thrown out,” recommends Chloe. Natural selection Not all bulbs are created equal. “Bulbs originate from different climates and have varied temperature needs for optimum flowering,” explains Chloe. Take this into account when choosing what to plant in your area. “If growing in warm areas, chilling bulbs in the fridge and working with your garden – planting deeper and burying them under the shade of large trees – will allow you to grow bulbs out of your climate zone,” she says. Otherwise, select bulbs that grow well in warm conditions; sparaxis, anemones and freesias are good choices. Go to ground Position bulbs in a spot that receives plenty of bright light, with protection from the afternoon sun. If you want to plant under a deciduous tree, look for bulbs that are more tolerant of shade, such as daffodils, hyacinths, jonquils and bunnings.com.au |

Hyacinth bulbs contain calcium oxalate which can irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling them
The striking bearded iris is available in thousands of cultivars
Potted perfection Bulbs make great pot plants, especially planted with a variety of bloomers in the same pot. “Plant bigger bulbs towards the bottom, medium ones just above them, and smaller bulbs in the top layer,” suggests Chloe. Don’t be afraid to pack them in, either. “Bulbs can even touch each other – they will still flower all crammed up,” she adds. For maximum impact, choose bulbs that flower around the same time. Alternatively, mass plant pots with a single variety and always use a premium quality potting mix.
snowflakes. The ground will need a bit of prep before planting, says horticulturist Angie Thomas of The Happy Gardener (@angiethehappygardener): “Bulbs do best in free-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter, so add plenty of compost and soil improvers in the weeks before planting.” If your soil is poor, try mounding garden beds or planting in pots with premium potting mix. Dig deep It’s important to plant bulbs at the right depth, says Angie. “Bulb packs provide helpful information, or as a general rule, plant twice as deep as the bulb is high.” Orient the pointy ends up and the roots down. With ranunculi and anemones, the pointy claws should be planted down.
Despite their delicate looks, anemones are a low-maintenance option

Plant crocus and winter aconites in shady spots or under trees for a riot of festive colour
Position daffodils in full sun or part shade, in pots or in mass drifts throughout the garden for a true spring celebration
Top 5 picks to plant now
Daffodils (Narcissus spp.) The classic spring bulb, daffodils mark the incoming sunny seasons with their golden yellow petticoat-like blooms in single or bi-coloured forms. Plant in pots or mass plant them under a deciduous tree.
Jonquils (Narcissus hybrids) A close relative of daffodils, jonquils also flower early in the season and are available in miniature, single and double forms. Their beautiful fragrance can be overwhelming for some, but a delight for most.
Hyacinths (Hyacinth orientalis) Short spires of lilac, purple, pink, blue, and white flowers look fab planted en masse in pots and garden beds. Their perfume is intoxicating, so cut blooms and fill your home with their delicious scent.
Tulips (Tulipa spp.) With more than 3000 different varieties of tulips available, in varying flower colours and shapes, there is bound to be a tulip you will love. They look spectacular when planted in drifts or crowded in large pots.

Freesias (Freesia x hybrida) Reliable performers that appear in early spring, freesias are beautifully scented blooms that come in a range of vibrant or pastel colours. Display cut flowers in a vase to enjoy indoors, too.

Plant as per instructions, but don’t be too stressed. “Simply plant bulbs on their side and they will find their own way up,” adds Angie Thomas. If you plan to leave bulbs in the ground for a number of years, space them out to give them room to spread. Great expectations For a beautiful show, plant taller bulbs, such as Dutch irises and tulips, at the back of a display and low-growing grape hyacinths, miniature daffodils and snowflakes towards the front. Whether you choose to plant a swathe or dot pockets of bulbs around the garden, be clever with your planting choices. “Planting the same type of bulbs together in the one area – rather than a mix of different ones – will provide a more cohesive look,” says Angie. to pair them with flowering annuals. “Violas, alyssum and pansies are great companion plants; use them to fill in the gaps around bulbs for a dramatic effect,” says Angie. Plus, they help prolong the flower show. “As the bulb leaves start to fade in late spring, the annuals help cover up the yellowing leaves,” she adds. Set and (almost) forget After planting, bulbs need little care until the leaves start to emerge. Until then, water sparingly, and mark the area to ensure you don’t accidentally dig them up. As soon as the foliage appears, give plants a weekly dose of a potassium-rich liquid fertiliser. “Feeding promotes flowering and helps the plants store nutrients for next year’s flower show – it’s like putting flowers in the bank,” says Angie.
After the show Once the flowers have finished, cut them off, but don’t remove the fading yellow leaves. Yes, they might look a little unsightly, but in fact they’re actually hard at work. “The leaves need to absorb as much sunlight as possible for future bulb health,” explains Angie. When the leaves have died down, use a fork to gently lift the bulbs, then brush away excess dirt and allow them to dry in a cool place before storing in a cool, dry, airy spot. “If your winters are cool and the soil is well-drained, you can leave them in the ground to naturalise,” says Angie. For bulbs that have been grown out of their climate zones, like cold-loving tulips planted in a hot place, don’t bother with the lifting and storing process. The aftercare can be tricky in the wrong zone, so they’re quite unlikely to re-bloom. ◆

Creating a kitchen that looks beautiful, works well and won’t date is all in the details
B
uilding a new kitchen involves so many decisions – butler’s pantry versus walk-in, gas versus induction, location of the sink – that it can be exhausting. While practical questions of layout and workability are paramount, it’s essential to also choose the right finishes – with so much time spent in the kitchen, you need to pin down a look you’ll love for the long haul. As interior designer James Treble (jamestreble.com) also points out, most kitchens in Australian homes are open plan, which means they are usually on show from all the key living areas. “We need to look at them and enjoy being in them as well,” he explains. “So the finishes are very important.” bunnings |

26
Where to start No kitchen design begins with a completely clean slate, and it’s important to consider the interior style and existing finishes you’re working with. James Treble says he always starts with the flooring. This serves as the base for the palette he develops, which, in turn, should also reflect the style of the rest of the house and result in a cohesive look and feel. Next comes the cabinetry selection. “The finishes of the doors are directly related to the interior style I’m going for,” says James. “A flat profile, which is more modern with clean lines, usually has a wider range of finishes and colour options, while a Shaker profile may have a more limited range of colours. I usually start with the limited ranges of finishes first and put those into place.” Follow with those surfaces that also have a narrower choice of colours, such as benchtops. “There are many more options in paint colours than any other materials,” says Andrea. “So the paint colour selection should come at the end of your fixtures and fittings selection.”

In the mood Bringing the looks you love together is one of the most exciting and creative parts of a renovation, says Briony Mikrou, marketing communications manager at Kaboodle. “Collate inspiration, whether it be images, textures or materials, and then place them onto a visual moodboard,” she says. “This will give you a clear vision of your style and colour and will help to determine the direction, look and feel.” Browse Instagram and Pinterest, and take photos of whole rooms or elements that speak to you. Kaboodle’s 3D Kitchen Planner app can help to visualise different configurations and colour or style options, plus provide you with an estimated cost. “A moodboard might include samples of laminate for cabinetry, stone benchtop, splashback tiles or glass, flooring, paint colour and a window covering sample,” says Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr. Put all your physical samples together in good light, so you can see how the colours and textures match – or don’t!
27
Plan it Dulux Light Ceramic
Colour choice Andrea suggests connecting the colour in the kitchen to the rest of your home. “Most homeowners will use a main colour for walls and a trim colour throughout the home,” she says. “For the kitchen, they may add an accent colour to differentiate what is a functional space, such as in a dining nook, or in feature cabinets.” Natural colours – both light and dark – are very much on trend for kitchens. “We have gone through the past decade of darker benches, but now you tend to see lighter to mid-tone benchtops,” says Andrea. “Cabinets tend to be different shades of white or neutral as well as block colours in subtle blue or green (Hamptons style), or darker blues, greens or charcoals for a more dramatic look.” Dark hues can be intimidating for some, but it’s all about what you match them with. “They add more mood and contrast, and you can still freshen it up with a lighter splashback or benchtop,” says James.
EXPERT TIP While matt cabinetry is on trend, it can make a kitchen dark – if you have limited natural light, a gloss finish will help the light to bounce around the space
The case for white If in doubt, James advises going for a white kitchen because it goes with everything. “They date incredibly well,” he says. “White is always going to be a clean choice for kitchens.” White cabinetry will brighten up a space as it reflects light well, adds Briony. “It will always be a smart choice for compact kitchens to make the space feel lighter and larger,” she explains. A white kitchen can easily be enlivened by bolder-coloured accessories or appliances, or with interesting taps or hardware. “European-inspired handles and knobs in stylish finishes are being used to introduce colour contrast and material variety into the kitchen, from various shades of gold to matt black and brushed nickel,” says Briony.
Practical magic Here are our top tips for designing a kitchen that’s both good-looking and hardworking. Factor in your appliances when planning – especially your fridge, says James, as this is commonly the largest item. You can save on electrical and plumbing costs by keeping the key items, such as the stove and sink, in the same place as the existing kitchen, but don’t compromise on usability just to save a few dollars. You need the kitchen to work well. A functional floor plan should be designed around the ‘working triangle’ – this is the distance between your sink, cooktop and fridge. “The most effective workspaces allow 1200mm between each of these stations,” says Briony. A single-line kitchen, with a wall of appliances, is one of the most efficient layouts with many homeowners opting to include a kitchen island if the space is an open-plan design, advises James.

Incorporating space from the verandah helped deliver a bigger, more useful space
Fresh start

A total revamp has turned a dated room into a chic and functional family kitchen
W
hen Deidre and Stuart bought their 80s home, the kitchen was definitely not among the property’s selling points, and within a year they were keen to gut the room and start afresh. Extra space was claimed from an adjoining verandah and, with the design expertise of Bunnings in-home services consultant Belle Haddon, a new layout was mapped out. “Belle came to meet me in our (at the time) half-demolished house so she could represent the space accurately in the design program,” recalls Deidre. “Being able to see in 3D real-time how changing one small detail would affect the look of the kitchen was really helpful.” }

STYLE TIP The industrial-style table leg makes a feature of the supersized island bench and helps to visually break up its bulk Room to move The kitchen was repositioned along an external wall, and the larger floor area allowed for a galley-style layout with a central island and a generous rear workbench. “Once she knew the look and feel that I was aiming for, Belle had lots of practical advice regarding which cupboards and drawers to place where, and where to put the fridge and pantry in order to facilitate the flow of living and working within the kitchen,” says Deidre.
Inside story When planning the storage layout, Belle mapped out where everything should be kept. On the island, 900mm soft-close drawers in different depths help to streamline organisation.
The original floorboards were sanded back and matched with new oak flooring
Seamless integration Built-in appliances, such as the oven and cooktop, help to create a neat feel. A sweep of cabinetry spans the back wall and hides a nifty rangehood overhead.

Fine finishes Two different cabinet finishes deliver a modern look, as well as having practical advantages. While the timber-look wall cabinets give a sense of warmth, the white ones bounce light around and, as Deidre has found, are a dream to clean. “With two young kids it’s been such a practical finish as it doesn’t show marks and it’s an easy surface to wipe,” she says. The composite stone benchtop’s colour and finish inject a layer of texture, and evoke the look of genuine concrete.
Leggy appeal The black metal accent leg gives the island a bespoke feel, as well as providing ample legroom for dining. “My two daughters sit up at the bench all the time and we have extra stools we add on the side when all four of us want to sit there,” says Deidre. The bar stools and a pull-out sink mixer add further black accents and contribute to the chic industrial feel. To maximise storage, the island has cabinets on either side. ◆

Bathing beauty
Inheriting someone else’s taste needn’t be a problem, as shown by this less-is-more bathroom makeover
C
hanging the colour scheme in a bathroom is no easy task, but when confronted by a symphony of brown, DIY and organisation expert Ange Sibley of Ever So Homely (eversohomely. com.au) was determined to try. “The house is about five years old now and there are a few things in it that aren’t really to our liking, so it’s just about personalising the house to be more ‘us’,” she says.
Before
Bright update The brown tiles on the wall weren’t going anywhere, but by changing the brown laminate vanity to white, Ange has lightened the whole feel of the room. The vanity was prepped, primed and then painted with Dulux Aquanamel in Lexicon Quarter. The existing chrome handles were a challenge, as Ange couldn’t find any in the same size to replace them. The solution? Rustoleum spray paint gave them a matt black makeover to match the new tapware and towel rails. bunnings.com.au |

Glass act The plain bathroom mirror was starting to look worse for wear, with a little de-silvering around the edges. A frame fixed to the front of the glass solved the problem, while adding the organic appeal of timber (for DIY details, see page 72). “I love timber and this was a way to incorporate it, plus it was a cheaper option than replacing the mirror,” explains Ange. She also had the idea of adding a little display shelf. “I like to create something a little different – I struggle to think simple!” she says.

New black fittings add interest to the expanse of white wall tiles
Tap into a trend Accents of black are a fantastic way to add an on-trend finish to the bathroom. Ange chose a Caroma ‘Jade’ tower mixer for the basin and a Mondella ‘Rumba’ waterfall bath spout, showing how easily you can pair fittings from different ranges if they have a similar shape and finish. The bath tap was fixed behind the tiling, which meant changing it for a new one would become a major job, so Ange simply spray-painted it and the existing bath spout back plate to match the new fittings. The chrome towel rails made way for Mondella ‘Vivace’ ones – an easy swap that avoided having to drill new holes in the tiles – while a Mondella ‘Rumba’ toilet roll holder was just the right size for a hand towel. ◆

P
rotecting against germs, bacteria and viruses has never been more important, and the task of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising your home’s surfaces is one of the first lines of defence. But not everyone understands the importance of – or difference between – the three processes. and effective, it’s proven to kill 99.99 per cent of germs and viruses*, including COVID-19.
CLEANING VS SANITISING VS DISINFECTING Viruses, such as COVID-19, can live on surfaces and eradicating them requires effective cleaning and disinfecting. What is the distinction between the three processes? Although cleaning removes germs and impurities from
surfaces, it doesn’t necessarily kill disease-causing organisms. Sanitisers are chemicals suitable for use on surfaces with which food for human consumption may come in contact, for the purposes of reducing pathogenic or food spoilage microorganisms to a sanitary level on such a surface. Disinfectants destroy bacteria and viruses. It’s important to read product labels on cleaning products to know which step in the process each product tackles. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner takes care of all three in one handy product.
NO HARSH CHEMICALS
Although Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a hospital-grade disinfectant, it contains no harsh chemicals or alcohols. Therefore, it does not require any PPE (personal protective equipment, such as masks or gloves) to use. Diggers Viro Surface Cleaner is a ready-to-use formula that can be used in food areas with no need for rinsing and is even readily biodegradable, so it’s kinder on the environment. Always read the label before use.

Game of thrones There’s a lot to know (and love!) about the new breed of toilets. Here’s the lowdown on loos

hoosing a new toilet? First, be aware that toilets connect to the waste in different ways – very important if you’re renovating. “Check whether your existing plumbing goes out the wall or through the floor,” says interior designer Martina Hayes (martinahayes.com. au). “The first needs a P-trap toilet pan and the latter needs an S-trap.” (See box over the page.) Careful measurement is next on your list of pre-shopping tasks, says Peter Honey, director of Priority Plus Plumbing (priorityplus plumbing.com.au). “The offset is the measurement from the wall or floor to the centre of the drain,” he says. “It’s essential because offsets in plumbing can differ from the offsets in toilets, and will determine the style of toilet you can choose.” Also consider how the toilet will fit in the space – make sure it doesn’t block access to doors or cupboards, and that there is sufficient room around it (at least 600mm in front and 200mm minimum elbow room either side).

Toilet types In-wall toilets (wall-hung or wall-faced) have hidden cisterns and a flush button panel in the wall. Wall-hung models have no base, making them painless to clean under, while a wall-faced loo is connected to the floor but is still easy to clean around. “When space is at a premium, an in-wall cistern is a great choice,” says Martina Hayes. A back-to-wall toilet is similar to wall-faced, except the cistern sits at the back of the pan. The unit sits flush against the wall and connects to the floor, but is still easy to clean around. The close-coupled toilet has no gaps behind and no exposed pipes, but you’ll still have to clean behind it. “These are the most commonly purchased toilets, as they are quick, easy and economical to install,” says Peter Honey. “They have an inlet to the back of the cistern.”

Plan it PRO TIP “The choice between wall-hung and backto-wall comes down to personal preference. However, if going for wall-hung it needs to be properly anchored by a professional” Martina Hayes interior designer
make sure it’s what you want. Also check out the underside of the seat; “Always avoid toilets and seats with tiny cavities that are tricky to clean,” says Martina. Clean machine The good news is modern models are designed to make cleaning easier. While traditional toilets have a rim under the edge that tends to accumulate nasties, a rimless toilet streams water all around the inside of the whole bowl, keeping the loo cleaner with less effort from you. For an even higher standard of hygiene, you can opt for a sensor cistern for hands-free flushing – the Fix-a-Loo ‘Hygenix’ cistern flushes with the wave of a hand and can be retrofitted to some existing types of toilet. Professional help Old toilets can be difficult to remove and create a hazard if they break, so always turn to the professionals. “All plumbing works should be done by a licensed plumber to ensure the works are done to standard,” says Peter. “This also safeguards your insurance.” Bunnings’ toilet installation service makes this easier, offering like-for-like installation of front-of-wall toilets for $275 – ask at the Service Desk for details*. ◆

ake your place look loved with a fresh coat of paint. Here’s how to fix a fading facade without having to call in the professionals.
Prep school Move outdoor furniture, decorations and pot plants out of the way, and use drop sheets to shield the ground and any permanent fixtures. Give surfaces a thorough clean using water and a small amount of dishwashing detergent. Sponge down weatherboards, gutters, downpipes and window frames, and use a stiff-bristled brush on masonry surfaces. Check for mould, signs of rising damp, or build-ups of white crystals (efflorescence) on brickwork. To clean, use a mixture of water and white vinegar – more concentrated chemical cleaning products may affect surfaces. Rinse off with a hose and leave to dry.

masking tape and press down firmly. Peel off the tape, and if it comes away with paint stuck to it, you’ll need to strip the old layer. If your guttering has seen better days, or there are metal features you plan to paint, you’ll need to clean away rust from bare metal using a wire brush. Apply a coat of primer, choosing one suitable for metal and any other materials you need to paint. The right stuff It’s important to choose a paint and primer suitable for outdoor use. “Consider how they will handle the effects of long-term exposure to UV rays and summer heat, and how well
the paint will maintain its look,” advises Lara Sofizay, brand manager at Taubmans. Exterior acrylic paints such as Taubmans All Weather and Dulux Weathershield are formulated to adhere to both weatherboards and masonry surfaces. If previous paintwork doesn’t peel off with the masking-tape test, you’re good to paint over it after giving it a light sand. On timber features, such as door and window frames, as well as doors themselves, use a water-based enamel. Order of the day When you’re ready to paint, start from the top and work your way down.

Surface matters Check for potential issues. Small areas of rot can be fixed by cutting away damaged material back to sound timber, then patching with two-part polyester filler, such as Turbo Builder’s Bog. If rot is extensive, it might be a moisture issue, and entire weatherboards may need to be replaced. If brickwork is chronically damp with large areas of mould (rather than in one or two isolated patches), you might need to call in the professionals. Fix gaps in weatherboards using a flexible and paintable exterior filler. For masonry walls, a premixed filler, such as Selleys Spakfilla Heavy Duty, is a good choice. Use a brush to paint the gutters and the board behind them (the fascia), followed by the eaves. If you’re painting masonry, whether the brickwork is rendered or exposed, use a paint sprayer or long-nap roller. In most cases, “for brickwork, no primer is required,” says Carissa Fero, Dulux category manager for exteriors. “But for best results, apply three coats for full coverage.” If your home is clad in weatherboards, a brush or small roller are the best ways to apply paint, or you could use a paint sprayer. Paint timber trim and windows last, keeping them open while you work to prevent the paint binding them shut. ◆

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Painting a brighter future With Paintback, DIYers across the country are now creating beautiful spaces while being kind to the environment
M
aking a mess is all part of the DIY process, but we all want to protect the environment while prettying up our homes. If your old paint cans are going to landfill, or you’re wish-cycling them into the recycling bin – a definite no-no for many councils – you’ll be glad to know there’s a better Wrap up your next DIY project by taking the leftover paint to Paintback
way, and it doesn’t involve leaving old paint tins to languish in the shed.
REDUCE AND REUSE The first way to avoid wasting paint is to not buy more than you need. Measure up and use a paint calculator to make sure you’re not buying 10 litres for a four-litre job. If you’ve still got leftovers, don’t be afraid to get creative – use it to upcycle an old chair or give the dog’s kennel a new look! Whatever’s left in the tin, plus the tin itself, can be responsibly disposed of with Paintback.
PAINT WHAT? Paintback is a scheme that collects unwanted paint and packaging, diverting it away from landfill and vital waterways. It was founded in 2016 by the Australian paint industry and major paint companies, who supply around 90 per cent of all architectural and decorative paint sold in Australia.
Old or unwanted paint containers are collected by Paintback with any leftover paint inside – this includes undercoats, primers, deck coatings, varnishes and more. The containers are recycled (when not contaminated) and turned into new packaging materials. The solvent paint is used as an alternative energy source, replacing fossil fuels in cement kilns. Water is separated from acrylic paint, with the by-product used in a variety of industrial applications. Paintback is also funding research to find new ways to recycle paint packaging and water-based paint, and to recover valuable ingredients. The aim is to ensure all paint and paint packaging in Australia will be reclaimed, recycled or converted into energy.
SIGN ME UP! Use the Paintback website to locate the nearest collection point (there are over 155 of them throughout Australia), or check the website or Facebook page for mobile events near you. Simply take your old paint to the collection point, where they’ll be stored ready for Paintback to pick up. All the hard work is done for you and you become an awesome Paintbacker. Well done, you!

good-looking garden is never quite complete without a path, whether it guides you to the pool, meanders between flowerbeds or leads you to your home’s entrance. “A path is the first thing you see when you set out on a journey,” says Matt Leacy, director and principal designer at Landart (landart.com.au). “And as with any journey, it’s all about the experience.” Here’s how to create your own. }

Getting practical Pathways serve a purpose, guiding you from point A to point B, but they should also add a layer of visual interest. To choose the right style, decide why you want it. Do you need a passage from the door to the clothesline? Or do you want to draw the eye to a water feature or a breathtaking view? “Without paths, gardens can feel too open and expansive – which isn’t very inviting to meander around,” says horticulturist Chloe Thomson (@beantheredugthat). “Garden users can be left feeling lost regarding where to walk and how to move through a garden.”

A matter of size Size is important for both practical and aesthetic reasons. Access paths should be wide enough to walk along comfortably, but also consider what you might be manoeuvring along them, such as a wheelchair or a stroller, and plan accordingly. Paths around the garden can be narrower, but do think about whether you’ll be pushing around a wheelbarrow, and give yourself enough room to move. As a general rule, wider paths look nicer, but take a look at the proportions of your home and garden overall and aim for a harmonious effect. If your path is heading for the front door, matching the width to the door area will help to give a seamless look.

Setting a style Look to your home when it comes to finding inspiration for the path’s design. “Try and get a feel for what is already existing and most dominant with your other structural elements, and then decide what form will look best based on that,” recommends Matt Leacy. A contemporary building may inspire neat lines and regular, squared off edges, while a more traditional home might employ a meandering pathway with edges softened by groundcover plantings. However contrast can often be equally effective – try using curves in the garden to help balance the sharp lines of a modern home, for example. “Crazy paving is a nice way of adding a hard-surface path without being too formal,” suggests Chloe. Pick a path The options are almost endless when it comes to your path’s building blocks. Higher-traffic walkways require a more solid surface, so need more time, effort and expense to install. “Gravel and pebbles are costeffective options and are great for acreages, while flagging in sandstone and limestone complements most styles of garden from classic to contemporary,” says Matt. Stepping stones laid in grass or ‘grouted’ with a groundcover plant make a style statement, while recycled bricks laid in a herringbone pattern offer a traditional aesthetic. For a natural appeal, use timber sleepers with a simple mulch walkway and let your thriving garden take centrestage. Bear in mind too that you can use your flooring choice to trick the eye; wide rectangular pavers can make a slender path look broader, for example. }

Beautiful borders When it comes to hitting the right style note, your planting choices are key. “For relaxed paths, strappy-leaved grasses, like dianella, lomandra and liriope are ideal,” says horticulturist Tammy Huynh of Leaf An Impression (leafanimpression. com.au). “For a more cottage style, try society garlic, lavender or lambs’ ears, and for a formal structured path, consider bordering with clipped box or westringia hedges.” Surrounding stepping stones or timber sleepers with pebbles will create a floating effect, while a hardwood border can be helpful for keeping things tidy and contained in smaller spaces, especially alongside a gravel path. “There are plenty of edging material options, from hardwood timber lengths, to recycled plastic flexible lengths or lovely rusted steel edging pieces,” says Chloe Thomson. “But not all paths need a formally defined border – go with what suits your garden design and style.” A border isn’t the only thing to help guide the way. new deck is a wonderful addition to any home – a value-add space in which to kick back, relax or entertain. What’s more, it’s a project that a moderately skilled DIYer can often take on themselves. But with various decking options available, selecting the right materials and design can lead to decision fatigue. We’ve asked the experts for their advice to help streamline the process.

Timber “Timber has a soft, warm feel,” says Henry Chapple-Cox, senior landscape designer at Secret Gardens (secretgardens.com.au). Hardwoods like merbau, jarrah and spotted gum are popular choices, says Brenna Mathews, Cabot’s senior brand manager. “Each has its own unique look and feel,” she says. Smaller budget? Treated pine is a good option. “Stain or paint it to get the look you want,” says Brenna.
Composite Combining recycled plastic with recycled wood fibres, composite decking is UV-, mildew- and moisture-resistant, so there’s no need to stain, seal, or oil it to keep it looking good. Just wash it down every so often. “They are extremely low maintenance and it gives you more flexibility with colour,” explains Henry. “However, if your deck is in high sun, they can heat up quite a bit.”

DESIGN AND COLOUR
Ekodeck ‘Flame Fighter’ 5400mm x 137mm x 23mm composite decking in Sand Dune/Honey Oak, $99, I/N: 0123642
With the choice of material made, it’s time to nail the details. “Start with a vision of how you would like your deck to look,” says Brenna. The style of the home, internal and external finishes, and surrounding landscape all contribute to the design. Colour choice will be one of the biggest decisions. “We often use hardwood and let it weather to grey – it’s great for a coastal look,” says Henry. Protect the timber with a clear decking oil, which preserves it while allowing it to age. Red- and yellow-toned browns are popular, or go for something completely different with a coloured stain or decking paint. Use a colour wheel to select the right tone to match your surrounds, and test it first on a scrap of timber, viewed in sun and shade and at different times of the day, before you commit. Board width and how the deck is laid will have an impact. A classic look is usually built with a 90mm board, but a 140mm width is also popular, especially in contemporary homes. Customised inlays, like herringbone, chevron and alternating widths, are all options. Design features such as adding breaker boards (laid horizontally across a vertical deck, or vice versa), or picture framing (adding a border around the deck perimeter or using a ‘frame’ to highlight a section) can help define spaces in a large area. These can match the existing finish, or stand out in a contrasting colour.

Oil Decking oil is designed to protect timber and enhance its natural look. “Decking oil has a small amount of pigment, complementing the beauty of hardwoods like merbau, spotted gum and jarrah. Oil won’t disguise the timber’s natural colour or hide the grain, perfect for these timbers, which look their very best with a natural finish or with a subtle colour tint,” says Brenna.
Stain Lighter timbers, such as treated pine, can need more help to achieve the look you’re after, explains Brenna. “A stain will do the same job as oil in rejuvenating and protecting timber, but has more pigmentation, which can transform timber into the deck of your dreams,” she says.
Paint A coat of paint gives deck timber an opaque finish and can be tinted to thousands of colours, but be careful to choose one designed for deck use. “Cabot’s Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint has been specifically formulated for timber and is suitable to walk on – which is perfect for decks,” explains Brenna. ◆

f daggy flooring is letting down the side, raising your interiors game might be easier than you think. For a more complete resolution than simply adding a rug, there are many quick-fix DIY solutions to choose from in vinyl and laminate. “Vinyl planks and tiles come in a great variety of colours, patterns and timber looks, and can create a classy and budget-friendly solution for everybody, even renters,” says interior designer Martina Hayes (martinahayes.com.au). “It’s a great way to add your own personality and a pop of colour.”

Senso ‘Urban’ 914mm x 152mm x 2mm self-adhesive vinyl planks in Whitetech, $59.18/pack of 16, (2.2sqm) I/N: 6600075
Get the look With a wide range of designs and finishes, price points and ways to install it, there is a vinyl flooring out there to suit most tastes. Particularly on-trend right now are light-coloured, ultra-realistic finishes, such as oak in blond or grey tones. With the look and feel of real timber, they can dramatically transform a room’s appearance. Love the chequerboard look? There’s a vinyl tile for that, while hybrid options include tiles made to mimic concrete or stone.
Vinyl is waterproof when properly laid, the only downside being it shouldn’t be installed in a shower. On the other hand, laminate – with a fibreboard and resin core – is only water-resistant, so is not recommended for wet areas. A better alternative is hybrid flooring, which has a waterproof core.
Pros and cons One of the most appealing things about vinyl flooring for the DIYer is that it often does not need underlay, but the surface you lay it over should be stable, level and sealed against moisture. It’s also easy on your wallet, long-lasting and comfortable underfoot. For renters, self-stick vinyl is a fantastic option. “Pressure-sensitive adhesive leaves little or no residue, making it easy to remove the tiles,” explains Martina Hayes. But careful prep, as always, is the key to success: if laying over existing tiles, fill the grout lines with self-levelling compound so the new floor doesn’t take on the profile of the tiles underneath.
Easy does it For novice renovaters, vinyl is often one of the first flooring projects tackled when updating a room. Also, as peel and stick vinyl tiles can be walked on straightaway, furniture can be moved around while working on the floor. Trimming vinyl tiles or planks to fit can be done with a score and snap method using a utility knife (see our story on page 64 for a step-by-step guide to laying vinyl planks). Laminate and some vinyl planks use an interlocking system that clicks into place and can be laid over existing flooring, provided it’s smooth and level. The trickiest part with laminate is cutting the boards to fit – you’ll need a handsaw or circular saw – but nevertheless it’s a simple way to give your room a whole new look in as little as a weekend. ◆

inyl planks give the look of real timber on a budget, and laying them is a straightforward DIY job. Selfadhesive ‘peel and stick’ planks are as easy to install as they sound, while interlocking versions, like the ones used here, simply click into place. If you’re renting, they can be removed without damaging the existing floor. Measure the area to be covered, multiply the width by the length, then round up the required boxes to allow for wastage. When installing, make sure the surface is level, flat and clean.

Working from left to right, set out the first row of planks with the flat side against the wall and the tongue facing out. Each plank must lock into another plank at both ends, except at the ends of the rows. Tip: To fit around power points or heating vents, measure and mark them on the vinyl plank and cut with a sharp utility knife.
2
3
4
5
Before securing the planks, always position 6mm spacers along the wall to create expansion gaps. Lay planks end-to-end, tapping with a rubber mallet across the join to click them together. Note: Changing temperature and humidity in the room makes the flooring expand or contract slightly. The 6mm gap allows for this to prevent bowing or cupping.
To install the second row, start with a cut piece at least 300mm long and position a spacer against the wall. With the tongue side facing out, hold the plank lengthwise at 30°, then drop it and click into place with the mallet. Repeat to lay the remaining rows, staggering long and short pieces to ensure the end joins of the rows are more than 200mm apart. Tip: Use a tapping block and mallet to check each row is locked before laying the next.
To trim the last plank of the row, measure out the length, allowing 6mm against the wall, then use a combination square to score across the plank with the knife at a right angle to slice through the top layer. Hold the plank on both sides to snap. Tip: Set out the rows to avoid wastage of offcuts less than 300mm.
If the last row needs to be cut lengthwise, position the boards upside-down with the flat side against the wall to mark the width of the gap, then cut and tap into place. Remove the spacers and install skirting boards to cover the expansion gaps. ◆

Draw a grid of the tiled area and sketch out the design, using fully coloured square tiles and semicircles the same width as the tiles. Tip: Make circles by drawing adjacent semicircles. Make pill shapes by drawing semicircles either side of the square tiles. To make the semicircle template for 300mm-square tiles, along one side of the cardboard, mark a 300mm line 50mm in and mark the centre point (150mm along the line). Tie nylon cord to a pencil, measure 150mm along and hold this point against the centre of the line with your thumb. Prepare primer as per manufacturer’s instructions (see label). Apply primer with a 4mm-nap 100mm wide microfibre roller and cut in with a 38-50mm angled cutter brush. Apply at least two coats, leaving eight hours between each coat. Prepare topcoat as per manufacturer’s instructions (see label). Apply topcoat to the tiles as in step 4. Work on one colour at a time, rinsing and drying the roller and brush between each coat. Once each section is coated, gently go over the surface in the same direction with an unloaded roller using minimal pressure. This will give a smooth consistent finish. Leave first coat to dry for at least eight hours before applying second coat. The floor can be used for light foot traffic after two days, but for best results leave it to cure for a week. Note: To avoid damage to your painted tiled floor (or any floor), don’t drag furniture over it.

Mask over skirting boards and trim to apply primer, cutting into corners with a 50mm angled brush, then using the roller to coat the wall, leaving to dry. Use painter’s tape to mask around the area for the textured stone-effect finish, running the roll over the tape to ensure it adheres to the wall. Mix the stone-effect paint with a stirrer to evenly distribute the particles and pour into a tray. Apply the first coat with a medium-nap roller, leaving to dry. Working in half-metre sections, apply the second coat with the roller. While it’s still wet, use a 120mm brush in random, overlapping strokes to texturise the wall. Remove the tape and leave to dry. Walls ready for a refresh this Easter? A pro-level job starts with a perfectly prepped surface
T
he secret to a quality paint job is in the prep. It’s not the most glam part of the task, but it’s one step you won’t want to brush over when tackling your Easter DIY projects. The work you put in beforehand will deliver you a finish to be proud of and, with help from Selleys, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. GET CLEANING Start by washing your walls. Selleys Sugar Soap cuts through grease and grime (if only all cleaning was so easy!). Put down a drop cloth to protect your precious floors and pull on some rubber gloves. Remove any nails or hooks from the wall, then use sandpaper to sand over any rough or flaky bits. Dilute some Sugar Soap in a bucket with water (as per packet instructions) and wash off any dirt, dust and scuff marks. Done!
2. TACKLE DINGS Don’t let dents and nail holes ruin your paint job. With a ready-to-use filler like Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
Selleys Spakfilla Rapid, covering over the cracks is an easy job for any DIYer. Simply apply a small amount of Spakfilla Rapid to the included scraper and draw it across the hole or dent. Skim over the area in both directions a few times to push out air bubbles, then firmly draw down the surface, leaving a small amount of overfill. Allow to dry, as per pack instructions, then lightly sand smooth and brush off the dust.
3. FILL THE GAPS The last thing your beautifully painted walls need is a gappy border around every architrave, window or door frame. Selleys No More Gaps Multipurpose makes filling gaps so much easier, thanks to the easy-squeeze tube, and it’s great for getting into those awkward corners. Make sure you’re starting with a clean, dry surface – give it a wipe before you start. Cut the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle and gently squeeze it into the gap. Use a wet
finger to smooth over the top and clean up any excess with a damp cloth. Give it at least 20 minutes to dry before painting over it with water-based paint, or allow 24-48 hours if using ceiling or oil-based paints. Now for the fun part: brushing colour on your beautifully prepped walls!

To make the frame, measure around the outside of the mirror and subtract 50mm from the height and width. Make a 45° cut at one end of the 65mm-wide pine. From the inside corner, measure out the length to mark the inside of the opposite mitre and cut. Flip the pine to measure out the next length and repeat to cut the remaining sides. Set out the frame to check the lengths are even.
To assemble the frame, apply adhesive along the mitre cuts and press the pieces together, checking the angles with a combination square. Position a corner brace over each joint and use it as a template to drill shallow pilot holes with a 3mm bit, securing with 12mm screws. Flip the frame to wipe excess adhesive from the front with a damp cloth and leave to dry.
Measure around the outside of the frame to cut 12mm quad moulding with mitres in the same method as the frame, making the first cut and measuring out from inside the mitre. At the base of the frame, measure the inside to cut the shelf from 90mm-wide moulding. Tip: Set up a mitre saw to make the 45° mitre cuts or use a handsaw with a mitre box.
Position the 12mm quad moulding around the frame, applying adhesive along the inside and along the mitre cuts. Secure firmly around the corners and along the lengths with painter’s tape, wiping away excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Leave to dry thoroughly before removing the tape.

Apply adhesive along the inside base of frame, position shelf and clamp. Wipe away excess adhesive and leave to dry. Position two angle brackets under shelf and drill shallow pilot holes with a 3mm bit, securing into frame with 12mm screws and into shelf with 9mm panhead screws.
Smooth over all pieces with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove any breakout and neaten the corners. Apply timber filler into the joints, leave to dry, then sand smooth. Apply at least two coats of clear varnish with a paintbrush, leaving frame to dry after each coat.
On the frame’s back, press double-sided mounting tape around the inside and remove the backing tape. Hold the frame lightly against the mirror with a small level on the shelf to check it’s straight, then press to hold. Tip: Enlist a second pair of hands to help. ◆

Plant pick
Seasonal stars Gift yourself a spring surprise of beautiful blooms by planting some bulbs in autumn English bluebell Delicate blue-purple blooms (you can also find varieties in pink or white) sit atop the ends of stems. The reflexed petals give them a hanging lampshadelike appearance, adding to their engaging demeanour. Plant masses in multiple pots for a dramatic effect or allow them to naturalise under a tree. Sparaxis This happy bloomer, with striking tri-coloured flowers in pink, purple, yellow, red, orange and white, pops up from spring and lasts for weeks. Grow in pots or spread throughout the garden, along borders, rockeries or mass planted in beds. Position in full sun and liquid feed weekly when flowering.
English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)
Sparaxis (Sparaxis tricolor)
Position in filtered light and feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser once the leaves appear.
The flowers are profuse and will continue to grow and multiply for many years without too much care.
Ranunculus
Snowflake
Snowflake Clusters of dainty white blooms – each tipped with a green spot – appear from late winter. The flowers hang like miniature petticoats, allowing them to dance and sway with the slightest breeze. This sweet bulb grows only 35cm tall and is ideal for pots or planted as drifts under a tree. ◆ FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

Ranunculus One of the best cut flowers, with multi-petalled blooms in a variety of colours including white, red, pink, yellow and orange. It looks fabulous planted as a clumped mix in pots or flowerbeds – for this reason, you will often find them sold as a mixed collection in stores. They grow 40-60cm tall, but dwarf specimens only reach 20cm.
