As we ease from autumn into winter, it’s time to get real about layering up our homes. Drawing light and warmth from the sun and blocking draughts are tried-and-tested ways to lift comfort levels during the cooler months. Embracing natural fibres – a snuggly wool throw, cushions and a floor rug – is the next step, and the new-season rugs arriving in store meet modern and traditional decorating trends beautifully (see page 23).
Our ‘Warm, well & wise’ feature (page 36) encourages a midyear home audit, to make sure you’re set for the winter months and can use knowledge and technology to heat your home effectively. Plus, we outline the tax deductions you could make if you’re working from home (page 75).
New technologies take convenience to another level. Smart appliances, from lamps to heaters and even pet bowls, prime your home for a warm welcome. Our smart home report details how to set up for success (page 61).
In the garden, root vegies are in season and our grower’s guide suggests quick crops plus what to plant now to ensure late-winter supply. If you’re short on space, an espaliered fruit tree might be in order (page 47). And with Mother’s Day just around the corner, we’ve put together stylish and useful buys – plus fun projects for the kids to help make. Happy Mother’s Day!

Big Freeze 10
Motor neurone disease (MND) currently affects more than 2000 people* in Australia. Two years ago, Bunnings team member Stacey Courtnage lost her grandfather to the debilitating disease, and she is all too familiar with the immense grief that MND brings to patients and families worldwide. Here’s how Stacey works with charity organisation FightMND, which is fighting to ‘defeat the Beast’ that is MND.
What has made you so passionate about motor neurone disease?
Losing my grandfather, who raised me, to the disease had a huge impact. It was really quick –just 16 weeks from when he got symptoms to when he passed away at the age of 62.
Why do you think it’s important for people to learn about MND?
I didn’t know anything about the disease until I was directly affected by it, so it’s really important to build awareness so people can keep an eye out for symptoms and to raise money to help find a cure. What’s a common misconception about the disease? A lot of people
associate MND with Stephen Hawking, who lived with it for a long time. But depending on the disease, you can diminish quickly. And it’s very hard to diagnose. How does Bunnings support FightMND? We sell Beanies in store as part of FightMND’s Big Freeze campaign. This year marks 10 years of the event, which will be back at the MCG for the Collingwood vs Melbourne AFL clash on June 10. We are also running a national sausage sizzle at all stores on May 25, with funds raised going to FightMND.
How do you play your part in ‘defeating the Beast’? As well as being an advocate by raising awareness, I’m one of the largest pushers in the store of the Beanies. I also organise charity events. In what ways can others get involved and help this cause?
You can visit the FightMND website (fightmnd.org.au) to make an online donation and organise or take part in a range of fundraisers.
What have you learned from people with MND? That it’s a devastating disease. And too many people are unaware of it.
Beat the chill this winter and head in store to buy a FightMND Big Freeze 10 Beanie or visit fightmnd.org.au to find out more about the disease.

IN THE GARDEN May & June
Zap lawn weeds, take cuttings and add seasonal colour
Monitor lawns for bindii (or jo-jo weed), which appears in autumn and winter. Spray with a selective weedkiller suitable for your grass type.
Grow new plants from hardwood cuttings. Try roses, hydrangeas, wisteria, grapevine, mulberries and bougainvillea. To reduce the risk of disease, use clean tools to take cuttings, dip their ends in a rooting hormone, pot into seed-raising mix and water in well.
Bring winter cheer to a garden or balcony by filling pots and hanging baskets with potted colour. Primula, polyanthus and pansy are all great options. Remove spent blooms and liquid-feed regularly to promote additional flowering.
Improve the health and nutrient levels of soil in empty vegie beds by sowing a green manure crop. Common choices include peas, broad beans or oats. After six weeks, cut the crop down and dig into the soil, then wait 4-6 weeks before planting.
If stone-fruit trees such as nectarines and peaches have been previously affected by the dreaded peach leaf curl disease, spray trees with a copperbased fungicide at leaf fall (in autumn) and repeat spray at bud swell (in winter).

After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. STEP BACK IN TIME
A respectful rebuild many months in the making retained an old cottage’s charm in this nearly new house

Smart ideaMeet the family
Alexander Nea @alexandra_nea, an illustrator and designer, lives here with her husband, James, and their children, Sam and Ellie, plus chocolate Labradors Dolly (right) and Maggie.
HOME AMONG THE GUM TREES
A revamped 1950s weatherboard on a generous block in Sydney’s northern suburbs WHEN THEY BOUGHT IT 2017
WHAT THEY DID
Rebuilt internal walls, raised the roof, extended to add a new kitchen, living and dining area and parents’ retreat, converted the garage into a studio for Alex, added French doors and verandahs
An appreciation of bygone eras is a constant thread in Alexandra Nea’s artistic work, from 1920s-inspired fashion design to sketches of her grandmother’s heirloom hydrangeas. Similarly, she has always been drawn to character-filled places in need of a little TLC. “I love restoring old houses and renovating,” she says. “My dad was an engineer and my grandfather was a carpenter – I grew up around back-of-envelope designs and home improvements.”
So seven years ago, when she and her husband, James, were looking for a place to renovate, a 1950s timber cottage with a big yard bordering a national park captured her imagination. They lived in the house as it was, with their young children, for several years. “This gave us time to appreciate the original layout and contemplate the way we used spaces,” says Alex. “I paid attention to how the light moved through the house during the day and where we enjoyed spending time.”
Alex’s sketches and ideas were passed onto their draftsman; the renovation’s design was also affected by the property’s location in a bushfire zone. While the home’s basic layout was largely kept, its footprint was extended out the back and front to create space for a new kitchen, living and dining area and parents’ retreat. Alex’s old-world style influenced the interior finishes and fit-out, combining vintage tones, antique furnishings and botanical prints.
GARDEN GLORY
Shade for the hydrangeas Alex has grown from her grandmother’s cuttings is provided by flourishing ‘Little Gem’ magnolias, which also form a beautiful screen for the fence.
“Where possible, we re-used existing and surplus materials, such as leftover bathroom tiles on the hearth and a panel of bathroom wallpaper as a backing in the kitchen display cabinets”
Alex/homeowner
Re-homed Alex found the 1920s mantel in an antique store and painted it in Dulux Natural White to match the walls

EVOLVING PLANS
Alex and James had intended to retain as much of the original house as possible but, as work progressed, it was clear the walls weren’t in great condition. “It ended up being a much bigger renovation – we basically rebuilt from the foundations up,” explains Alex. However, adjusting the plans with their builder had advantages, such as changing the ceiling height, which allowed for a loft playroom.
Original timber floors also had to be removed, but were faithfully replaced with the same species, cypress pine, in a wider plank. “The timber floors are really integral to the look and feel of the home as they have so much interest and character with their knots and colour variation,” says Alex. She added period details with reproduction cornicing featuring Australian botanicals, wall panelling, decorative dado and picture rails, salvaged windows from the original home and reclaimed antique leadlights.
To meet the area’s fire-resistant requirements, the house was clad in fibre cement weatherboards, which were also more economical than hardwood timber. “The weatherboard is fantastic as it created the look I was after and the paint adhered really well to it,” says Alex. She also custom-designed the French doors, which open onto new hardwood verandahs, to meet the fire regulations. And to help stretch the budget over the 10-month build, she and James took on some of the exterior painting.

LABOUR OF LOVE
Doing the landscaping themselves helped to further reduce costs and enabled Alex to indulge her passion for gardening. A priority was making her heirloom hydrangeas a standout feature. “My grandmother, Jean, who is 101, passed down hydrangea cuttings to me that her mother grew, so they’re actually fourth-generation plants,” Alex says. “I’ve had success propagating them in winter, by dipping the ends of the cuttings in honey or in a propagation mix.” They’re planted along the southern side of the house, where they get morning sun and afternoon shade, along with many cottage varieties such as camellias, winter roses, daisies, hellebores and lavender.
Another priority was water storage, to maximise their ability to water the garden solely from tank water. “For Christmas James made and installed an irrigation system for me, which we run off our four water tanks,” Alex says.
When not in the garden Alex loves to spend time in her studio – previously the garage – which is now connected to the house. Surrounded by beautiful homegrown flowers, salvaged finds, antique furnishings and collections of vintage fabric, it’s imbued with comfort and character and plenty of ‘back stories’. “I’m a real homebody so it’s lovely to be in a place we enjoy so much and get continual satisfaction as we chip away at little projects,” she says.

LIVING
For rooms that function as places to relax and unwind, a soothing palette rules. But you can still make a home fashion statement with a contemporary rug in neutral colours. Paler hues are lovely in no-shoe zones, where a wool weave will feel reassuring underfoot.

Bathrooms made for life
Planning a toilet upgrade? You need to read this first
Whether your washroom is in need of a refresh or you’re designing a brand-new space, choosing the right toilet is paramount. Before making a decision, ask yourself these three questions to ensure your toilet is made for your life, your family and your style.
HOW CLEAN IS IT – REALLY?
Think about ease of cleaning the toilet. No-one wants to spend hours scrubbing a dirty bowl! Caroma’s Luna Cleanflush toilets feature the patented Cleanflush® design and flush and flow technology, with a rimless bowl that eliminates hiding spots for germs and makes cleaning quick and efficient.
Seats are also protected by Caroma’s GermGard®, an antimicrobial formula that kills a minimum of 99 per cent of bacteria it comes into contact with*, helping prevent the spread of germs.
IS IT MADE FOR LIFE?
Consider the longevity and quality of the toilet you choose. You don’t want to be wasting money on repairs, excess water usage or replacing the whole unit earlier than you need to. The Caroma pans in the Luna range undergo rigorous testing, meeting double the Australian standards weight of 400kg, ensuring durability and strength. They also minimise water wastage with a WELS rating of 4 stars, and are backed by a reassuring 20-year warranty for peace of mind.
Designed and engineered in Australia by Caroma’s in-house team, the Luna Collection is made for life in a busy home.
EFFORTLESS INSTALLATION
Just what the plumber ordered! Caroma’s Luna toilets have adjustable flush pipes and Uni-Orbital® technology, to make installation a breeze.
CUSTOMISE WITH COLOUR
Do you have a Pinterest board called ‘dreamy bathrooms’? Now’s the time to hone in on exactly what you like about them, from the overall aesthetic to the fittings and fixtures. Do you prefer the sleek sophistication of chrome, the bold elegance of black, the modern charm of brushed nickel or the luxurious warmth of brushed brass?
Caroma knows that these details make all the difference, so the Luna Collection has the option of any one of these finishes for flush buttons and wall plates. Consider the full Caroma Luna bathroom collection for the matching finish across tapware, showers and accessories.

NURSERY
Little ones are always playing on the floor, making rugs an essential element of their room decor. Fabulously tactile shag pile and faux fur are winners, or opt for a more easy-care rug that does double-duty as a game, such as this cute ‘Roadway’ design for hours of fun with toy cars – beep beep! ●

Warm, well & wise
Give your home a health check, then layer in warmth, comfort and money-saving tweaks
Words Shelley TustinThe start of a new year is peak season for assessing what needs to be improved in your home (and life). However, while those January resolutions are now but a distant memory, the new financial year and start of the cold season offer a great opportunity to do a midyear life audit!
Start by making sure your health and comfort are covered – your home should provide everything you need in terms of warmth – and also your physical and mental wellbeing. Then look at how you can do things better in the second half of 2024, focusing on organisational systems and savvy financial tips to make your life run more smoothly.
WARMTH
Make your home a haven this winter with these tips for creating a cocooning space that keeps out the chill without breaking the bank.
LAYER UP
Blankets, rugs and cuddly cushions are essential ingredients for a winter nest, while the visual effect of ampedup texture makes us feel warmer as soon as we enter a room. Natural fibres, such as wool, are one of the best ways to add texture and warmth, says interior designer Emily MacAlpine of MARG Studio (marg.studio). “This could be by adding a thick, knitted wool throw rug to the end of your bed or sofa to snuggle up under.”
EMBRACE THE SUN
Sunlight is a fantastic no-cost source of heat – and a dose of sun also helps keep the winter SAD (seasonal affective disorder) away. Note where the sun falls in the cool months and take advantage of every beam. “Homes should act like a living thing that changes with the seasons and throughout each day,” says Emily. “Consider where the sun rises in the morning and how it tracks through the home as the day progresses.”
Emily suggests tweaking your window treatments to control the amount of light you get into the home, especially during the warmest times of day. Angle shutters to welcome in light, open curtains fully and, crucially, close shutters and draw curtains closed when the sun fades to lock in that lovely warmth.
PLUG THE GAPS
The whistle of a winter draught is the sound of your money blowing out of the door. Keep your home snug and your energy costs down by blocking draught points that let in icy air and steal your warmth. Fabric door snakes, fixed door seals and weather
seal tape (for doors and windows) are affordable and easy DIY solutions. Insulate windows (especially singleglazed ones) with good window treatments – hang curtains high and wide to cover the gaps around the edges of the frame, and opt for thermal fabrics where possible.
SMART SOLUTIONS
Using smart technology to fire up your heating systems gives you complete control over your home’s climate from wherever you are, says John Campbell, Bunnings national electrical buyer. “Smart technology allows users to remotely control reverse-cycle airconditioners, and some models can even sense the temperature of the home and adjust settings automatically,” he says.
It’s not just airconditioning systems, either. “Electric fires and fans with winter modes can be controlled using smart technology, offering convenient and efficient heating solutions,” John says. This technology allows you to come home to an already warm and comfortable space, and can even cut your energy bills as you fine-tune the system to match your routines and override it when your plans change.
“Like we dress in layers in winter, a home should be layered to create a sense of cosiness“
Emily MacAlpine/interior designer
WELLNESS
Winter can test our physical and mental wellbeing. Use your home environment to boost your health with these breathe-easy ideas.
FRESH AIR
Shutting all the windows and cranking up the heater is the go-to comfort solution in winter, but it’s not great for air quality. Between occupant-related pollution (the carbon dioxide we breathe out), pollution from cooking and heating (specifically gas and wood heaters), mould and moisture, our health can be negatively impacted. Aim to balance airtightness and ventilation by opening windows daily for an hour or so. Fans can be used to further circulate air. Using a reverse-cycle airconditioner can help too, as many models have air-purification filters.
BREAK THE MOULD
Mould and damp deserve special consideration, as their negative health effects can be dramatic. Ward against mould this winter by following the tips above, while also targeting sources of damp within the home.
Make sure you use bathroom extractor fans and rangehoods to suck out damp air; avoid drying clothes on racks indoors; consider upgrading to a condenser dryer (or run it in a room with an open window); use a window vacuum on ‘crying’ windows; and place moisture absorbers in cupboards and any damp corners.
JUNGLE ESCAPE
It’s said pot plants can work to improve air quality in the home, with some of the top performers including peace lilies, sansevieria, Boston ferns and spider plants. As well as helping to remove toxins from the air, plants have also been found to have
“There is a plant to fit every type of gardener and the available light in a home“
Emily MacAlpine/interior designer
a calming effect – win-win! “I have chosen indoor plants like rubber plants and parlour palms because, beyond looking good, I know I can neglect them a little bit and go away and not have to worry too much about water,” says Emily MacAlpine.
GREEN THERAPY
The mental health benefits of gardening have been well documented – pottering in the
garden has been shown to soothe stress and anxiety and promote positive emotions. Why not combine the psychological benefits of gardening with the physical benefits of homegrown herbs and vegetables? Herbs such as coriander, thyme, sage and rosemary are all fantastic for winter stews and curries, and vegies like kale, lettuce, peas and radishes are all easy to grow and great for your health.
Embrace the power of plants to reduce stress with an uplifting display of greeneryWISE MOVES
Give your home and finances a midyear health check and commit to a budget-savvy and newly organised financial year ahead.
HUNT FOR SAVINGS
An annual health check of all your major expenditure is the ultimate adult move. Flex your financial responsibility muscles by checking in with lenders, insurers and energy suppliers – make sure you’re getting the best rates and that, in the case of insurance, you’re covered for everything you need. Andrew Dadswell of ASIC’s Moneysmart (moneysmart.gov.au) advises shopping around when it’s time to renew things like your insurance. “Find insurers that provide the cover you need and compare premiums – you can often get a lower premium,” he says. “The same principle applies for other big household expenses, such as energy bills. Compare energy suppliers on energymadeeasy.gov.au (or compare. energy.vic.gov.au if in Victoria).”
SET A BUDGET
When it comes to budgeting, it’s rarely about making one big change. “You can start by making a few small changes and building on it over time,” says Andrew. “Take stock
of your spending over the past few months – it might be confronting, but understanding where your money is going is the first step to setting up healthier spending habits.”
Don’t forget to scan your bank statement for subscriptions and automatic payments and check you’re getting what you pay for – and paying for things you actually want. If you’re shelling out for a streaming service you never use or a gym ‘donation’ when your runners are gathering dust, look at saving money by cancelling the membership or diverting the funds to a service you’ll actually use. Once you’ve got a clear idea of your expenses and where you can trim the fat, Andrew suggests using the free budget planning tool at moneysmart.gov.au.
BE TAX TIDY
Enjoy an easier ride next EOFY by setting up good organisation systems for your work-related records. “If you are entitled to claim a deduction for work-related or investment expenses, you must have a record to prove you incurred the expense and how you calculated your claim,” says Andrew. The ATO app makes it easy to keep all your records in one place. “It allows you to record your expenses and deductions, vehicle trips and income
if you’re a sole trader. You can also save photos of your invoices and receipts. When it’s time to lodge your tax return, you can upload the data directly into your tax return or email a copy to your tax agent.”
HONE THE HOME OFFICE
Organising your work from home or study set-up can help boost focus and productivity, as well as aiding in setting boundaries between work and home life. Emily MacAlpine recommends organising your work equipment and storage so everything has a place and can be packed away to create a sense of finality to your work day. “This could be especially important if you are working from a space like the dining room table that really needs to be returned to its other function,” says Emily. She suggests using wheeled storage or anything that has a door or lid so everything can be tucked out of sight.
WARDROBE SMARTS
Take your organisational skills beyond the office to bring order to other areas, and potentially saving – or making – money in the process. A seasonal storage audit and winter wardrobe cull allows you to clearly see what you already have and identify any gaps in your wardrobe so you can make intelligent purchases, not knee-jerk online buys. And you can sell your unwanted clothes or accessories. Look for local markets in your area and team up with a friend to hold a stall. Or sell your stuff online using a fashion marketplace like Depop to turn preloved and unworn clothes, bags and more into extra cash. Plus, by thoughtfully assessing and storing your summer kit neatly, you’ll have an easier auditing job next season!*

Affordable home heating
Stay snug this winter with economical and sustainable fireplaces from Scandia
On a cold winter’s night, few things are as inviting as the comforting crackle of an authentic wood-burning fireplace. Scandia fireplaces are inspired by modern aesthetics and designed in Australia – so you can complement the style of your home while being perfectly suited to the Australian climate.
The only question is: which Scandia fireplace will you choose? These two new ranges seamlessly blend contemporary style and features with unbeatable value, so the choice is up to you.
CONTEMPORARY STYLE
Marrying European flair and cuttingedge technology, the Scandia Fraam range creates a striking centrepiece in a modern, contemporary home. It has a sleek and angular design in either a horizontal or vertical format, with a range of pedestal and base options available so you can tailor the look to suit your home.
Fraam is as efficient as it is stylish: the Fraam Horizon can heat up to 300sqm, while the upright Fraam Sheer
can heat up to 210sqm and emits only 0.5g/kg, which is two thirds less than the Australian standard emissions. The Fraam’s 12-14 hour burn time* means you’ll never have to face another cold morning, and its three-speed wireless fan can be controlled with the touch of a button, making this the perfect choice of comfort and style this winter.
AUSTRALIAN MADE
With its classic, streamlined appearance, the Australis range is a versatile choice that looks right at home in any Australian property. All the design details have been considered, like subtly rounded corners, timeless stainless steel fittings and, of course, a generous glass-front door.
The Australis is designed and made in Melbourne and it has plenty of innovative features to match its looks, like a remote control fan that can be used from anywhere in the room, exceptional thermal efficiency and low flue emissions. The best part: a convenient pull-out dustless ash collection drawer and dual-access dust chutes make cleaning up a breeze.
Choose between the 490mm-wide Australis M and the larger 540mm width of the Australis L. Both are compliant under the minimum 7-star national building standard when installed with a Scandia room sealed flue kit.

Season of plenty
Cultivate a smorgasbord of goodies to enjoy now and throughout the winter months
The weather may be cooler but there’s no need to hang up the gardening gloves. Many crops can handle the chill and be ready for harvest during the coming months. Plant up beds or pots with edibles now and you’ll have a source of fresh, healthy and tasty food for you and your family.
HIT REFRESH
To prepare a patch for cool-season vegies, start with a clean slate. First, pull out weeds and remove all the old stems and leaves from summer crops. Once clear, improve the soil by mixing in a rich source of organic matter, advises horticulturist Angie Thomas of Yates. “This replenishes nutrients used up during summer, boosts soil structure and attracts earthworms and beneficial soil microorganisms,” she says.
To make the most of the season, Angie advises kickstarting the patch with vegies that take a few months to mature. “Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and leeks have a long maturation period, so it’s ideal to get them in early,” she says. “While they’re growing, also sow quick-growing vegies like baby leaf spinach, baby beets and snow peas. That way, you’ll have crops to enjoy both sooner and later.”
Other fast-growing crops include bok choy, lettuce, radish, rocket, mint, coriander and Italian parsley. “The benefit of growing parsley and coriander during the cooler months is that they’re slower to bolt (set seed), giving you more tasty and fragrant leaves over a longer period,” says Angie.
“You don’t need a ‘patch’ to grow vegies – there are many pot-perfect options that are ideal for balconies and small spaces”
Angie Thomas/horticulturist
SPACE SAVERS
If you lack lots of growing room, try ‘intercropping’. This hack involves planting different crops near one another within the same garden bed, explains horticulturist BonnieMarie Barnsley (@gardenersnotebook). “You can maximise your space by strategically growing vegetables and herbs with varying habits, such as planting smaller lettuces under larger crops like kale or broccoli,” she says.
Further extend growing opportunities by cultivating microgreens indoors. These tiny, nutrient-packed seedlings can be grown on windowsills and are ready to harvest within a week or so. Snip them at the base and use to enhance the flavour and texture of sandwiches or salads.
SEED CAPITAL
For a regular supply of homegrown produce, stagger crop sowings throughout the season. “Planting in intervals or batches avoids excess produce at one given time, reducing waste while ensuring an extended harvest window,” explains Bonnie-Marie. “Sow vegies like lettuce, radish, peas and broad beans every fortnight, and continue sowing until conditions are no longer favourable.” Seeds are more cost-effective than punnets of seedlings: a $4 seed packet may contain over 50 seeds – potentially 50 plants – while a $4 punnet may have four or six seedlings. “Growing by seed is budget-friendly and allows you to control the number of plants you need, when you need them,” says Angie.
NOURISH TO FLOURISH
Regular feeding and keeping soil or potting mix consistently moist are key to a great harvest. “Liquid-feed every 1-2 weeks to promote healthy growth – you’re watering and feeding at the same time,” says Angie. A layer of naturally derived mulch, such as pea straw, will help to reduce soil water evaporation, keeping soil moist for longer. Picking individual leaves of leafy greens, like spinach and lettuce, promotes fresh new growth and allows the plant to continue to produce for months. You can also harvest plant leaves while waiting for their vegies to mature. “Young baby beet leaves are great in salads,” says Angie. “Don’t pick them all, though; leave some to allow the plant to keep growing.” ●

The horticultural practice of espalier involves training a fruiting or ornamental tree, shrub or woody vine to grow in a pattern flat against a wall, fence or freestanding frame. Practical and beautiful, espalier is a fantastic way to make the most of a small outdoor space, or hide an unsightly surface.
Landscape designer Brielle Economos of the Economos Group (economosgroup.com) says espalier creates a striking focal point. “It can also transform vertical spaces into an opportunity for a compact and productive orchard,” she says.
THE RIGHT CONDITIONS
An espaliered tree or shrub requires the same light conditions as its regular-growing counterpart. “A full-sun location such as a northfacing wall is ideal for fruiting plants like apple or citrus,” explains Brielle. “A shadier aspect may better suit a camellia or Japanese maple.” Always check the plant label information before buying a tree, to see if it’s suitable for your space.
If planting in the ground, ensure the soil is well-draining and enriched with organic matter. If growing in a pot, espalier specialist Chris England of Merrywood (merrywoodplants.com.au) recommends using a large rectangular planter. “This means it sits flat against a wall or fence, whereas a round container protrudes more,” he says.
In cooler climates, an espaliered fruit tree against a wall or fence can be a good idea as the surface absorbs and radiates heat, offering extra warmth and protection. However, in frostprone zones, additional precautions are necessary. “Use hessian covers when growing citrus, or go for deciduous fruit trees as frost won’t harm them as much,” says Chris.
TOOLS AND TREES
Almost any tree can be espaliered. “Evergreen and deciduous fruit trees (both regular and dwarf forms) like lemon, lime, apple, fig, pear and olive, and ornamental shrubs and trees like gingko, camellia, magnolia, gardenia, star jasmine and rosemary are all suitable candidates,” says Chris.
FLAT-OUT FABULOUS
“You’ll need a good pair of secateurs, a sturdy structure to secure the branches to – such as a wooden lattice – and soft flexible ties or plant clips,” he advises. If training against a wall or fence, you can construct a framework using heavy-gauge wire (see Watch it! opposite below).
When choosing a tree, Brielle suggests looking for one that has the growth pattern of an espalier with a good central stem and several evenly spaced horizontal branches. “Alternatively, choose a young plant as they are quite flexible and pliable, and will be easier to train and tie the branches to the frame,” she says.
STYLE GUIDE
There are a number of espalier styles, which can be divided into two main types: formal and informal. “A formal design has a central leader with symmetrical growth on either side,” explains Chris. “An informal style simply aims to fill the entire space with branches.” For beginners interested in attempting formal espalier styles, Chris recommends
While there are limitless shapes you can achieve with informal espalier, formal styles have enduring appeal. Try the horizontal cordon shown on the previous page or one of the classics below.

the horizontal cordon, which is characterised by a central stem with horizontal branches every 30-40cm. “It’s a classic shape and also one of the easiest,” he says.
After securing a support structure (such as lattice) in place, plant the tree in the centre of the framework. Loosely tie the trunk to the frame first, then the side branches, and prune excess growth. Water the tree in with diluted seaweed solution to help reduce transplant shock and encourage faster root establishment.
Other formal styles include fan or vase, Belgian fence and candelabra (see Flat-out fabulous, opposite).
Whatever shape you choose, pruning is necessary. “It’s important to prune at least twice a year, in summer and again in winter,” says Chris. “Summer pruning should be done two or three times during the season, depending on the growth of the plant. A general tidy is all that is required in winter.” ●

Best in bloom
Grow a magnolia for a display that says goodbye winter, hello spring!
PORT WINE MAGNOLIA (Michelia figo)
The flowers on this evergreen shrub can smell like bubblegum or bananas, depending on the nose. Whatever the scent, you’ll catch it wafting in the air. It grows 2-3m tall and wide, and is suited to most parts of the country, in full sun or part shade with well-draining soil enriched with compost.
BULL BAY MAGNOLIA (Magnolia grandiflora)
This evergreen magnolia has velvety russet-brown undersides to its leaves and creamy, cup-shaped blooms that appear in late spring to early summer. Normal forms can reach 30m, making compact cultivars popular. ‘Teddy Bear’ has a conical to pyramid shape, grows 3-5m tall and loves full sun and heat. ‘Little Gem’ is a smaller slender tree that grows 4-5m tall, is usually more floriferous and more tolerant of shade.
SAUCER MAGNOLIA (Magnolia x soulangeana)
In full bloom, this deciduous magnolia is breathtaking. Flowers come in shades of pink, purple, yellow or white in early spring on bare branches, bringing drama to the landscape. Grows up to 8m tall and is best in cool and temperate climes. Position in a sunny spot, with protection from strong winds and afternoon sun. Ensure the soil is well-draining and enriched with plenty of organic matter.
STAR MAGNOLIA (Magnolia stellata)
One of the earliest spring-flowering magnolias, this compact deciduous shrub is ideal for smaller gardens. It becomes more rounded as it grows, reaching about 3m tall and 1.5-2m wide. Dainty white flowers are star-shaped and fragrant and appear on multiple stems. Give it a shaded spot in well-draining soil. ●

Put a happy face on your home this winter with these simple ideas for projecting welcome cheer
Words Shelley TustinChilly temps and short days can dampen the most optimistic outlook. But arriving home to a welcoming front entrance can inspire good cheer on even the bleakest winter day. Try these bright ideas for perking up a facade suffering from seasonal slump.
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
For a quick floral fix, fill a planter or window box with winter-flowering beauties, says horticulturist Tammy Huynh (leafanimpression.com.au).
“Seasonal favourites, such as pansies, violas, primulas and snapdragons will quickly brighten up the front door,” she says. “But if you prefer year-round colour, go for coleus or heucheras – there are many colourful combinations to choose from.”
RETURN OF POST
Put a smile on your dial every time you check the mail by updating your letterbox with a splash of colour! For best results, put in the effort on prep – for a metal letterbox, for example, sand off any rust, apply a primer, then a specialised paint for metal surfaces. Alternatively, trade in your old letterbox for a swish new model.
UPDATE THE GARDEN
Turn your front garden from a winter wasteland to an all-season charmer. “Evergreen trees or shrubs, such as westringia, rhaphiolepis or buxus, are the backbone of a garden, carrying the landscape through the seasons,” says Tammy. “You can make their display more interesting by clipping them into topiary balls.” Add more evergreen layers with winter-flowering shrubs like daphne and camellias. At ground level, Tammy suggests filling gaps with winter-flowering perennials like hellebores, cyclamens, prostrate forms of grevillea and banksia.

hard surfaces. Don’t underestimate the power of simply washing your driveway and porch area, says Louise Hodgson of Project Coastal Luxe (@projectcoastalluxe). “Get out the high-pressure cleaner and brighten up your facade – you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes!” she says.
PATIO PAINT JOB
Tired tiles or stained concrete can bring down the tone of your home, but new products like Dulux’s Concrete & Paving range make it simple to give your paved surfaces a facelift. Use it to revive the driveway, front porch or a pathway. A pale hue looks crisp and contemporary, or go dark to make adjacent greenery pop.
COLOUR ME HAPPY
Painting the front door is a quick and sure-fire way to create an upbeat entrance, says Dulux colour specialist Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Incorporating a bold or deep colour on the front door can be impactful and change the look and feel of a home dramatically,” she says. Select a vibrant hue that will stand out from the street. “Or, for a trends-driven look, try Dulux Aquanamel in an apricot tone or an emerald green against
a predominantly white exterior with black or charcoal trims,” suggests Andrea. “At dusk, the soft sunlight can create a striking metallic-like look with some tan and apricot tones.”
ACHIEVE BALANCE
“Look to tonal shades in accessories, such as potted or hanging plants, seating, lighting and letterboxes to balance your home’s exterior,” says Andrea. Reinvent accessories to suit your new colour scheme –terracotta pots can be primed and painted in any hue, or revive an old bench seat with a brush of colour. Complete the look with house numbers in a funky font, a charming door knocker or a tinkling bell.
SHINE A LIGHT
The worst bit about winter is coming home in the dark but this can be easily overcome by upgrading your porch lighting. Frame the front door with vintage-style wall lights, use up/down lights to cast interesting shadows and install solar fairy lights or warm garden lights to brighten the front path. A timer, sensors or smartphone-controlled lights will ensure your home glows from sundown to bedtime. ●

THE Pet
Bird watch
Love our feathered friends, but don’t want one as a pet? Enjoy the frolics of wild ones with a backyard bird haven. David Goldman at the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife (fnpw.org. au) says the first step is to create a suitable habitat. “Think about the different levels of vegetation in your garden,” he advises. Aim for a mix of heights and densities, which flower in different seasons to provide food year-round. Water is also important: ideally a cat-proof, elevated bird bath next to a spiky, dense bush where small birds can hide if a predator appears. It’s best not to feed backyard birds – the right plants will provide plenty of natural and nutritious food to sustain them. But if a poorly bird turns up on the doorstep, try a serve of wild bird pellet.
FASHION SHOW
If you’re reaching for your jacket before you take your dog for a walk, chances are your furry friend might appreciate a bit of extra warmth, too. But what type of jacket does your pup need?
It depends on what type of dog you have. Dogs with ‘double’ coats, such as retrievers, huskies and cattle dogs, may not need a thick jacket, but if it’s wet, consider a light raincoat.
Smaller dogs such as chihuahuas and toy poodles, and larger dogs with thinner coats such as greyhounds, need a bit of extra warmth. Even while they’re inside, these breeds might need a lightweight jumper in winter.
For walks, find a jacket that allows you to connect your lead or harness (indoor ones might not have this feature). Adjustable closures such as Velcro make life much easier when trying to dress an excited dog at the front door (and will be more comfortable for your pooch, too).
To size, measure from the neck to the base of the tail, and around the widest part of the chest.

ORGANISE YOUR WORKSPACE
Whether you need to store heavy-duty tools, sports gear or craft supplies, you can build a customisable solution with Rack It
Has clutter creep turned your garage or shed into a jumble of tools, toys and old tech cast-offs?
Organise your space once and for all with a customisable storage set-up from Rack It. As a modular system, Rack It’s shelves, cabinets and drawers can be configured and built to precisely fit your space and your needs.
All kits are made from high-quality, powder-coated steel, and have been engineered and tested for long-term strength and durability. They’re simple to build yourself: all you need is a mallet to knock the beams and shelves into place (it’s advisable to have a friend or family member on hand to hold the upright beams steady as you work).
HEAVY HANDLERS
If you have a lot of heavy or bulky items, like paint cans, tools, work equipment or large containers, the 1000KG Starter Kits are made with you in mind. They’re constructed from heavy-duty steel and house extra-deep 600mm shelves, rated to hold up to 1000kg per shelf for safe and solid storage.
Now comes the fun part: you can customise your Rack It Starter Kits to one of three different heights, ranging from 1530mm to a whopping 2135mm, with three adjustable shelves. All shelves have sturdy support beams to hold the weight and a safety pin keeps them secured in place.
EVERYDAY SOLUTIONS
To transform a cluttered garage into a stylish and well-organised space, the 400KG Starter Kits are built to hold gardening tools, gym equipment,
boxes full of Christmas decorations and other day-to-day items. The sleek MDF shelves can also double as a functional workbench, and are available in 430mm and 530mm depth options. For longer gear – like golf clubs or even a kayak – simply attach extra Rack It modular components to expand even further.
EVOLVING WITH YOU
It’s only natural your storage needs will change over time as your family grows and their interests vary. Rack It’s modular componentry system makes it easy to expand or reconfigure your unit. Add a pegboard or hooks to keep every tool in its place. You can also include lockable drawers and cabinets from the Rack It PRO range, which are compatible with the 1000KG system.

TOP TECH
Get with the programs and make your life easier for less with smart gadgets for every area of your home
Words Jane ParburyThere are many reasons to give your home a smart update. For the elderly or people with disabilities, smart products can make home life easier to navigate, potentially helping users retain their independence. Fun, convenience, energy savings and enhanced security are just a few aspects of a smart home from which we can all benefit.
Adopting a smart strategy isn’t actually that complicated. Gadgets come with their own app: download to your phone, follow the set-up prompts and you’re ready to go. There are devices for a range of home fittings and appliances, including heating, cooling, lighting, security and more. Multiple gadgets could let you run virtually the entire house and garden from a single device, whether you’re at home or not (see Do I need a home hub?, following page). You can create schedules for all devices to work automatically, operate them with your smartphone or use a spoken command if your home hub has a voice-compatible assistant.
SET UP FOR SUCCESS
Good internet coverage is important for a fully functional smart home. It’s common to have patchy internet, especially in larger properties, says Tegan Hamilton, Bunnings national buyer security and general hardware. “But you can help extend your signal to dead spots around the home with wi-fi extenders and whole-of-home mesh wi-fi systems,” she says.
Also bear in mind that running a smart home may attract subscription fees. “Most brands don’t require these, but some do!” Tegan warns.
Let’s take a tour of what a typical smart home could look like.

FRONT OF HOUSE
Wireless or hardwired, a video doorbell can record anything happening around your front door, and store the results for a period of time in case you need to revisit the footage. It lets you ‘answer’ the door whether you’re at home or away, giving you the chance to monitor visitors and parcel deliveries. You could pretend you’re somewhere in the house even if you’re not – handy if an opportunistic thief stops by. Add a smart lock and

you can be alerted when the kids get home from school; greet friends and send them a virtual ‘key’ to let themselves in if you’re running late; or give your tradie an entry pin code, which can be changed when they’ve completed the job.
For many people, the starting point for a smart home is a security camera. “The most popular options offer solar panels for long battery life, as well as 4k resolution for clearer night vision,” say Tegan. Some models now come with facial recognition technology that helps the device ‘learn’ to distinguish between regular guests and strangers, helping to avoid unnecessary alerts. They might be hardwired or solarpowered, and some have two-way audio to let you speak to visitors. But be aware that technology is moving fast, warns Tegan. “Resolution and night vision continue to improve, so if you’re buying into wired cameras, they can be costly to replace,” she says.
FUTURE FADS
Better functionality, increased ‘learning’ and broader compatibility are improvements we can expect from smart gadget producers, according to networking specialists Grid Connect.
The company advises consumers to be aware of emerging technologies and keep abreast of the latest home automation developments on the horizon. These include the following.
● Increased integration between different platforms.
● Artificial intelligence (AI) improvements that allow systems to learn from user behaviour and anticipate user needs.
● Energy management systems that will allow homes to optimise energy consumption based on usage patterns.
● Health and wellness integration such as monitoring devices.
While AI exists in some smart home products, the Grid Connect team says the ‘learning’ facility is set to grow exponentially. For example, reporting back larger than usual water usage at your home might suggest a leak or dripping tap and prompt speedy maintenance. Products are likely to become more compatible, letting you create routines in apps that currently don’t play well together.
DO I NEED A HOME HUB?
Yes, if you want to operate multiple smart devices that connect via different wireless technologies, like Bluetooth, wi-fi, Zigbee, Thread and more. To streamline operation, you can: choose models compatible with a software hub, such as the Grid Connect app; or use a hardware hub like Wink 2 to bring them under the same operational umbrella.
Smart speakers like Amazon Echo can also work as a hub. They’re operated by voice commands via Alexa to play music, set timers, make calls and much more. Smart displays like Amazon Echo Show also have a screen for video calls and watching TV.
If smart home devices are controlled by different apps, a smart speaker can still work but may not offer the device’s full range of functions.

A smartphone can operate lighting, entertainment, window coverings, heating and cooling. Tenille Riordan of Signify (producers of Philips Hue and Wiz brands) suggests starting with smart globes. “Replace your existing globes (or downlights) with smart, and you’ll be able to turn them on and off or adjust the brightness from anywhere.”
Another quick tech fix is a smart plug, adds Tenille. “You can use them to make your table lamps smart, or manage other plug-in appliances,” she says. Aside from the convenience – like using your phone app to switch on your electric blanket towards the end of a late-night movie – some smart plugs come with a built-in energy monitor so you can track your energy usage (see Good save!, below).
What could be nicer, on a cold, dark, rainy evening, than coming home to a warm home, courtesy of a few taps of your smartphone from the train? Add a smart reverse-cycle airconditioner to your shopping list and you could make it happen. While you’re doing that, you could also prompt your robotic vacuum to give the living room a once-over before guests arrive.
GOOD SAVE!
The right smart devices can help households reduce energy usage. Some lighting, heating and cooling products come with sensors and switch off automatically when the room is vacant for a while.
“If you often forget to switch lights on and off, you can simply upgrade to a smart bulb and add a motion sensor, then your lights can turn themselves on and off automatically,” explains Tenille.
Meanwhile, ‘set and forget’ scheduling allows you to cap the time a device is operating.

GARDEN GLORY
A smart garden is one that uses less water and energy. Georgia Liversage of Holman Industries says using tech outdoors offers convenience and helps your garden to thrive.
“It can monitor and track water usage, adjust accordingly, and be controlled from your smartphone,” she explains. “A good starting point is a WX1 tap timer teamed with the proprietary wi-fi hub.” A smart weather station, accessed remotely, is another useful addition – it can prompt you to turn on your irrigation to water your precious vegie garden when you’re away.
Outdoor security is also important and can include motion-activated security
floodlights and cameras. And in addition to deterring burglars, smart outdoor lighting can turn your garden into an after-dark wonderland. Try colourchanging deck lights and bollards for ambience as well as safe passage at night; spotlights to accentuate beautiful foliage; and ropes of fairy lights to transform an alfresco dining pergola or draped over a fence to create a twinkly backdrop.
“A smart controller allows you to have complete control of your garden lights from anywhere in the world, as long as you have access to a wi-fi connection,” says Georgia. This includes changing the colours of your lights or adjusting
Hook up any sprinkler to a smart tap timer and let them look after your lawn
scenes, setting schedules for specific times, intensity and saturation and even setting smart automations through the app based on external sources. “For example, you could set the lights to turn on when the sun is setting, and turn off when the sun rises,” explains Georgia.

GARAGE MAGIC
Chances are your garage holds a lot more than just your car, being a favoured repository for a range of possessions from toys to tools. There are a few smart upgrades worth doing here for security and convenience.
A smart garage door opener lets you operate the door remotely – for example to admit a delivery person dropping off your internet shopping. And it can also send you alerts if you’ve left the door open by mistake.
A smart batten light can be automated to switch on as the door opens, or timed to come on when you arrive
home. A smart padlock, teamed with a tough cabinet or tool chest, might be just what’s needed to provide extra security to protect your valuable belongings.
Inside the garage, a security camera can do the same job as those outdoors. ‘Plug and play’ models offer quick and easy set-up without needing the services of an electrician.

PLAN FOR SUCCESS
If you’re starting your smart journey from scratch, consider the following planning steps from the team at Grid Connect.
1 Assess your lifestyle and your daily routines, habits and activities to determine where automation can enhance convenience or efficiency.
2 Take into account the needs and preferences of all family members, ensuring that the smart home features accommodate everyone.
3 Identify the areas or functions in your home that are most important to automate. For example, if you travel frequently, security features and remote monitoring might be a priority.

Its four weatherproof cameras can each be mounted up to 200m (in typical use) or 600m (in open air) from the hub – perfect for monitoring fences, gates and sheds. And they’re fitted with sensor lights and colour night vision, plus technology that detects heat, motion, people and vehicles, and triggers notifications to your phone. Two-way talk means you can answer the door from anywhere, whether you’re just upstairs or away for the weekend. There’s even a siren to deter intruders from going any further.
The system is easy to install and powered by built-in solar panels, so you never need worry about recharging or signal dropouts – it’s always keeping an eye on your property, recording and storing footage.
PRECISE AREA SURVEILLANCE
Have a single area you want to keep an eye on? Monitor a yard, entrance or garage using the Swann Xtreem4K Wireless Security Camera. STAKE A CLAIM
From headphones to cleaning, it’s time to make sure your WFH tax deductions add up
Words Shelley Tustin1WHAT COUNTS AS WFH?
Whether fully remote or hybrid working, many of us clock in from the comfort of home. While there’s no minimum number of hours to qualify as WFH, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) states you do have to be working to “fulfill your employment duties” – so checking emails while watching TV doesn’t count.
2
FIXED VS ACTUAL COSTS
There are two ways to claim WFH expenses, according to the ATO. The ‘fixed rate’ method assigns a set cent per WFH hour rate and covers most expenses, including utilities and stationery. It’s designed to make calculating deductions easier, without fussing over an item’s use for personal versus work purposes. To use this method, you must log and keep a record of the total number of hours you worked from home during the income year. The ‘actual cost’ method requires tracking the work-related use of additional expenses, from power to printer ink. You need to keep records of all your expenses, your hours worked from home and your work-related use.
3
KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON
You can claim for essential services like electricity, internet and phone if they’re additional running expenses. If you’re working on a laptop in the lounge room while your kids are watching TV, you haven’t incurred any additional expenses. The fixed rate method covers these expenses and requires you to keep a record of all WFH hours and a record for each running cost covered by the rate per hour that you incurred, for
example, an electricity bill. The actual cost method is more complicated: claiming for electricity requires evidence of the cost per unit of power, average power consumption and hours used for work purposes.
4
OUTFIT YOUR OFFICE
Your idea of home office ‘must haves’ may differ from the ATO’s. Accountant Holly Shoebridge of Oceans Accounting advises keeping receipts of any items bought to do your assessable income-producing work, such as a laptop or headphones (even AirPods!) for work meetings. “It’s only reasonable to be able to claim these genuine expenses, to the extent of work-apportioned use, against your employment income,” she says. However, an air purifier would be much harder to claim if working from home incrementally. “A product like that is likely to have considerable private use and it’s harder to define the direct connection to incomeearning activities,” she explains.
5
DEFINITE MAYBES
Occupancy expenses, such as mortgage, rent, rates and home insurance, can be claimed only under limited circumstances. For example: you have to WFH because your employer doesn’t provide a place to work, and the part of home you work in is used exclusively for work and is not readily capable of being used for any other purpose. You can claim a deduction for housecleaning costs (products or a service), says the ATO, but only if you have a dedicated workspace (not just a laptop at the kitchen bench).
6THAT’S A NO
You can’t claim WFH deductions for items your employer provides, like a laptop, or for expenses where your employer already reimburses you for the cost. Nor can you claim for tea, coffee, milk and other household items, even if your employer provides these at work. And, says the ATO, you can’t claim for “costs that relate to your children’s education, such as equipment you buy, for example iPads or subscriptions for online learning”.*

Heating your haven
The way you warm your place can benefit your health, the environment and your budget
Words Donna Fleming
Acomfortably warm home not only feels nice, it’s important for your wellbeing. The World Health Organisation suggests homes should be at least 18°C, or slightly higher for children, elderly folk or people with illnesses, as cold rooms can increase the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular issues1. Follow our guide to get the best heating for you.
ASSESS YOUR NEEDS
Before investing in heating options, do an audit of your home and your needs: which rooms require better heating? Do you want an option that costs less to use, or something that’s cheaper to buy? Do you want the system to be smart? And is it important for heating to complement the decor of your home? Interior designer
Shannon Pepper suggests a checklist. “If you’re building a new home or doing a big reno, you have more options because a lot of heating types are easier to install then,” she says. “Otherwise you can choose something you can retrofit, such as reverse-cycle airconditioners [heat pumps]. For smaller spaces that don’t need to be heated all the time, like bedrooms, plug-in electric heaters are a good choice.”
PLUMP FOR PUMPS
Some of the most common and efficient heating systems in Australia are reverse-cycle airconditioners, also known as air-source heat pumps This technology works by absorbing warmth from the air outside and distributing it indoors while in heating
mode, then absorbing heat from indoors and releasing it outside when it’s set to cooling mode2.
One of the main reasons for the popularity of reverse-cycle airconditioners is that their efficiency makes them so economical.
Standard plug-in electric heaters produce one kilowatt (kW) of heat for each kW of energy you buy. Reversecycle aircon can take one unit [1kW] of electrical energy and turn it into three to six times as much heating (or cooling), making it 300 per cent to 600 per cent efficient3. According to Choice, running a reverse-cycle airconditioner for the entire year will only cost a little more than running an electric heater for just three months over winter4.
CHOOSE ELECTRIC
Households are being encouraged to shift from gas to electric appliances, for health, economic and environmental reasons. When researching heating, check if you can access rebates or incentives to switch to electric models.
Electric heaters are usually portable and are designed to heat a single room or a small area of up to 2030sqm for short periods of time. The initial cost is usually fairly low, but if they are used for long spells the bills can become expensive. There are a few different types to choose from.
Fan convection heaters heat the air and circulate it in the room. They are better for larger spaces but it can take a while for the room to warm up. Appliances with timers can start heating the space before you get up in the morning or return from work.
Radiant heaters generate a more direct heat, so they warm up surfaces rather than the air. Oil-filled column heaters and panel heaters have hot surfaces that heat the air directly. They don’t have a fan to circulate air, so take longer to heat a room. However, because they don’t blow air around they’re a better option for people who suffer from allergies5.
SIZE VS SPACE
Your heater should provide adequate heat for the size of the room. For radiant heaters, 1kW is suitable
DOUBLE BENEFIT
Ceiling-to-floor lined curtains look elegant and, when drawn, can help stop heat escaping the room.
for a 15sqm room; a 1.5kW one is needed for rooms that are 15-20sqm and a 2kW heater is best for 20-25sqm spaces1 As convection heaters heat the air, work out the best one for the size of your room in cubic metres (m3): multiply the length of the room by the width and the height. A 1kW convection heater is suitable for a 15m3 room, while you’ll need a 1.5kW heater for a 23m3 room, a 2kW one for a 31m3 space and a 2.4kW convection heater for a 39m3 room2.
Try to achieve a room temperature between 18°C and 20°C. Every degree higher can add around 10 per cent to your heating bill3
AMBIENT ATTRACTION
Some people wouldn’t be without a woodburning fire – they create a wonderful ambience, heat large spaces, can be less expensive to run and may be particularly effective in cold regions. But before you buy, check your woodburner meets the relevant Australian standards. Local regulations about where and how wood heaters and chimneys can be installed also apply – check with your local council before installation.
KEEP HEAT IN
Make sure your home doesn’t allow heat to easily escape. Good insulation is important, but also look at placing draught seals around doors and windows, and investing in well-lined curtains that drop from the pelmet to the floor,
which can make a big difference. To maximise heating efficiency, close off the space you’re in so the heat stays where it is needed. Bedrooms often get overlooked, but keeping heat within sleeping areas is especially important as temperatures 16°C or less in winter months can cause health issues4 If your head is out of the doona and you’re breathing in cold air, it’s not good for you.
BATHROOM BLISS
Install an exhaust fan with a heater or heat lights for a warm bathroom with good air quality. A budget-friendly option is a discreet wall-mounted heater, but remember to run the exhaust fan or open a window after every shower to let steam escape. A heated towel rail is a delight in winter, warming and drying towels and the bathroom, but keep an eye on the electricity usage. ●
TAKE IT OUTSIDE
Decks, patios and courtyards can be warmed with purpose-built heaters for year-round alfresco entertaining. Options include electric strip heaters, portable electric heaters and wall-mounted gas heaters. Shannon Pepper says many of her clients opt for strip heaters mounted under eaves or on a pergola. “They like to integrate them into the ceiling space where they’re not so obvious, and these devices can pump out a lot of warmth,” she says.

THE BIG EASY
Update a drab bedroom in a day with wall panels
The bedroom isn’t alway top of the reno wishlist, unlike the kitchen and bathroom, but for Bunnings Workshop community member @sammilne it was one of the first ‘big’ projects she tackled. “The bedroom lacked personality and felt very dark and dull,” she says. “I’d seen lots of DIYs on social media using Easycraft panels, so I thought, ‘Why not give it a go?’”
Elegant, easy-to-install lining boards are the new feature wall
“I love DIY and also sharing my work with others, to inspire them to try things they never thought they could do” Sam Milne/interior designer

PREP THE PANELS
The first step was to cut the 2400mm VJ wall linings in half using a circular saw to create 1200mm high and wide panels. Sam enlisted her uncle as a pair of helping hands. “We got it done quickly by having the measurements clearly marked and double checking before we made the cuts, so there were no mistakes,” says Sam. They also cut out powerpoint holes with a jigsaw. “I used to be scared of using power tools, but now it’s second nature,” she adds.
Next, Sam applied two coats of Dulux Casper White Quarter, using a brush to get into the grooves, then a roller. “The pre-primed panels and the fast recoat time were factors in how speedy this room reno was,” says Sam.
LINE THE WALL
To install the panels, Sam applied construction adhesive to the backs. “Selleys Hold Up is my go-to for everything!” she says. And while the glue is designed to hold instantly on vertical surfaces, Sam did tack a couple of nails into the studs and hid the holes with putty and a paint touch-up.
ADD THE DETAIL
To tie the wainscoting in with the new styling of the room, Sam trimmed the top with 12mm x 12mm pine. Ditching the dark bedhead and pulling up the old carpet to reveal floorboards helped to soften the space. Sam was so happy with the results, she has used the wet-area VJ panels in two bathrooms since doing the bedroom. “They create such a nice effect without costing too much,” she says. ●

INSTANT PRESSED FLOWERS
The art of pressing flowers turns beautiful blooms into a keepsake – but using traditional methods to dry the flowers can take up to three weeks. Instead, try the almost-instant microwave method. Avoid using blooms with very thick petals, as they hold too much moisture, and white flowers as they can yellow and brown. Flowers that work well with this method include petunias, pansies, violets, daisies, violas, geraniums, cosmos and zinnias.
Make a display case to remember by decorating a timber memory box in Mum’s favourite colour and a complementary fabric, then adding pressed flowers that have been dried to preserve their beauty (see below for a speedy method). Some products are not

TILED TRIO
Use mosaic tiles to turn rectangular or square plain glass containers into decorative vases. The trick is to match the size of the tiles to the container so you can trim the backing sheet to fit without cutting individual tiles. Our sheets are 306mm x 306mm with six tiles across and six down. For impact, use a contrasting grout such as black on white tiles and white on patterned tiles.

Keep in mind…
■ When painting and using spray or tile adhesives or grout, always wear the recommended safety equipment (such as eye protection, mask and gloves) and ensure the room is well ventilated.
■ Keep all paint, adhesives, grout and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
STEP 1: MEASURE & CUT
1 Working on a drop sheet, measure one vase to determine how many tiles fit across and down. Using scissors, cut the mesh backing of a mosaic tile sheet into two pieces that each fit over two sides of the vase. Trim excess mesh along edges of cut pieces. Repeat for all vases and tile sheets.
STEP 2: ATTACH TILES
2 Place vase on its side. Using a caulking gun, apply beads of tile adhesive in lines to one side of vase. Turn vase to apply adhesive to an adjacent side. Position a cut tile sheet on adhesive on one side of vase, pressing down firmly. Turn vase and press down second half of tile sheet. Leave to set. Repeat for all vases.
STEP 3: APPLY GROUT
3 Working on one side of each vase at a time, apply premixed grout (in supplied applicator or with a grout squeegee) to the joints between tiles, including corners. Using squeegee, compact grout firmly then scrape tile surfaces to remove excess grout. Leave grout to firm for 15 minutes.
STEP 4: CLEAN GROUT
4 Clean off excess grout with a damp (not wet) sponge, working diagonally across the joints. Rinse sponge frequently in a bucket of clean water, changing the water often. Leave grout to harden for 24 hours. When grout is touch-dry, use dry cloths to buff off grout haze and polish tiles. ●
Demolition time
Call in the big guns for your winter reno projects – the tools tough enough to knock down walls and break up concrete
Words Mitchell McleanWhen cooler days arrive, the temptation to breathe new life into your home can be hard to resist – whether it’s prying off kitchen cabinets or ripping up carpet. And when you leap into action, the right tools make all the difference in transforming your space. Outdoors, don’t let cracked concrete or sagging fences hold you back. With the help of a reliable breaker or a sturdy sledgehammer, you can tackle any hardscaping challenge with ease.
GOOD SAVE!
Recycle materials where possible to reduce waste, such as re-using kitchen cabinetry in the garage. You could also consider selling them on a classified website such as Gumtree or contact local salvage yards. Borrow tools or rent them instead of buying for one-time use.

SAFETY FIRST
Before you tackle any demo work, check out these tips from Chris Sutcliffe at tool manufacturer TTI (Techtronic Industries).
1 Safety should always be the number-one priority when using any tools. Before you start demolition, inspect the space thoroughly to identify potential hazards and any hazardous materials (such as asbestos or lead) for appropriate removal.
2 Turn off the water, gas and electricity to the area you’re working on. Puncturing a water line or nicking an electrical wire can lead to major hazards and additional costs.
3 Dress in suitable protective attire: long pants, a shirt with long sleeves and boots with thick soles to safeguard against sharp objects such as nails and screws. Wear good safety goggles to protect your eyes, ear plugs or earmuffs, quality work gloves to shield your hands and always don an appropriately rated dust mask to help prevent inhaling debris.
OSCILLATING MULTITOOL
Numerous attachments have you covered for just about every task, with adjustable speed settings and illuminating LED lights for precise work in any location. This is a must-have when performing detailed cuts in tight spaces, sanding irregular surfaces or removing grout effortlessly.
● Ryobi ‘ONE+’ 18V multitool kit, $149, I/N: 0249429
Properly disposing of demolition debris is crucial, as most councils don’t collect building waste. Bunnings offers convenient solutions such as hiring a skip, purchasing a skip bag for later pick-up or using a hired trailer to transport debris to the tip‡. These options ensure safe and responsible waste management during your renovation.
4 Clean as you go to reduce tripping hazards and ensure that you’re keeping a safe working environment. Before you start, make sure you have organised all the required tools and materials.
5 There are several safety features to look for in demolition tools, such as anti-vibration handles, a sledgehammer with a through-head design and masonry chisels with contoured handles to reduce hand fatigue. ● ● Mobile Skips 500kg skip bin for hire, $580/3 days (includes delivery and removal), I/N: 5460042‡. CHARGING STATION
Six steps to a very useful desk
STEP 1: CUT THE TOP AND BACKING
1 To make the desktop, on the 405mm panel, mark 350mm from one end and 50mm in from the side to tap in a nail. Position the inside corner of a framing square against the nail and use a pencil to mark a 700mm-wide curve. Remove the nail and cut with a jigsaw. To make the backing, position the desktop on the 600mm panel, against the end, curve against the side. Check it’s straight with a tape measure, then mark the curve to the side. Cut with a jigsaw
STEP 3: ADD THE BRACKETS
3 To connect desktop to backing, position two brackets with the shorter arms flush with bottom of backing and 100mm in from sides. Predrill holes with a countersinking bit; secure with 15mm screws. Place desktop on bracket arms to predrill 10mm-deep holes. Apply adhesive along desktop edge, reposition; secure with screws. Turn backing over and mark a line 160mm up from base, predrill five evenly spaced holes to secure with 40mm screws.
● Irwin ‘Quick-Grip’ 150mm mini bar clamp set, $34.95/pack of 4, I/N: 5860055 six clamps to make the bent plywood trim
STEP 2: DRILL CABLE DUCT HOLE
2 To make a hole for the cable duct on the desktop, position the arbor (drill bit) of a 60mm holesaw on the nail hole. Hold the drill straight to cut down about 10mm, then flip to complete the hole from the back to avoid breakout. Sand all over with 120-grit abrasive paper and smooth along the cuts. Tip: Work on offcuts while drilling to avoid damaging the workbench.
STEP 4: BEGIN THE PLY TRIM
4 Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth. To make the trim, on 3mm plywood, cut four 70mm-wide strips across the grain with a handsaw. On one strip, predrill holes 9mm in from the side, 20mm from the ends, 200mm apart. Apply adhesive to top edge of the backing and secure the strip with 20mm screws. Cut a filler piece from one strip to complete the curved trim, securing with adhesive and screws.
STEP 5: BUILD UP TRIM LAYERS
5 Apply adhesive to a second strip and filler (from the offcut strip), clamping to the first layer from the opposite side. Predrill and secure to the backing, offsetting the screws. Remove clamps and repeat a third layer. Adjust clamps evenly around the trim and leave to dry. To install a rail, remove clamps, measure 100mm up from the desktop, 20mm in from the trim edge, then drill holes with a 6mm bit. Tap 6mm dowel through the holes with a rubber mallet, removing excess with a handsaw.

STEP 6: ADD A HANGING RAIL
6 Dab adhesive around the dowel joins and fill screw holes with filler, leaving to dry. Sand all over with 180-grit abrasive paper, smoothing raw edges. Wipe away dust with a cloth. Apply primer and two coats of paint with mini rollers, leaving to dry after each coat. Follow the instructions to secure the hanging rail on the wall, 750mm from the floor and, on the backing, 300mm up from the base, predrilling with a 2.5mm bit. Add glides to the corners as spacers, tap in the cable duct and hang.
