Welcome
A word from our editor Anything that makes life a bit easier gets my vote, and that’s what smart home technology is all about – lights that turn on when you walk into a room, locks you can operate with a programmable fingerprint, so you don’t need to keep track of keys when you have guests, and much

more. We’ve done a round-up of some of the most useful to help you make an informed decision about which might suit you. See page 42. Kiwi homes tend to be pretty sizeable, but one company has an innovative approach to maximising space; we take a look at the Clever Living Co’s ready-made homes on page 26. And that seems like a good time to share tips and tricks (buys too) on how to make the most of a small zone; check out ‘Amazing space’ on page 22. Of course, we couldn’t let this issue go by without an homage to dads everywhere. Find a great gift for him on page 12, and have a look at our ‘Father’s Day feast’ from page 60, where we’ve gone beyond the sausage sizzle to create barbecue fare the whole family will love. Enjoy the issue!

et your wanderlust loose within your own four walls with interiors inspired by global travels. This wayfaring trend sets cultural curiosities against a bold monochrome backdrop, warmed by shades of deep chocolate and accented with spicy hues of terracotta and burnt orange. Woven materials, such as jute, rattan and leather, and simple geometric shapes provide pattern. Everywhere the eye falls, there’s textural interest, to create an interior scheme that’s both multi-layered and intriguing.

Marshmallow melters What you need Foraged sticks or driftwood Handsaw Drill with 4mm drill piece Epoxy (we used Parfix Epoxy Adhesive 5 Minute Everyday) Bamboo skewer Side cutters Steel skewers (we used BBQ Buddy Steel Skewers) Cord (we used Zenith Jute Shop Twine) Method Forage for sticks between 1.5cm and 2.5cm thick and at least 25cm long. Using the handsaw, cut each end cleanly. Drill a hole down the centre of your stick roughly 4cm deep. Mix the epoxy well, and use a bamboo skewer to apply this in the hole – just enough to secure the metal skewer without overflowing the top. Cut the holding loop off the steel skewers. Slot the cut end of the skewer into the hole. Depending on how much glue has been used, you may need to hold this upright for a few minutes until the glue has begun to set. On the opposite end of the stick, drill a hole through the centre. Cut cord into 10cm lengths. Thread the cord through the hole in the stick and knot to form a loop.

Plan it Property know-how
First impressions count if you’re selling, so freshen up your home’s entry
Bills to pay If deciding to sell, keep in mind the expenses that are involved such as repairs, repainting, a garden tidy-up and staging the property before it goes to market. You’ll also have conveyancing costs and agents’ commission fees, which vary enormously, so be sure to shop around. Then there are moving costs and possibly storage fees to consider, plus all the expenses involved in buying again.
If you’ve outgrown your current home, is it best to sell and upgrade, or stay put and renovate?
N
avigating the real-estate cycle can be fraught. Timing when you buy and sell can affect returns, yet your motivation to move may be about more than just money. Perhaps you need more bedrooms, want a feature like a pool, or a bigger or smaller section. Going once! If you have itchy feet and simply want to sell, in a weaker market it’s important to also buy when the market is in decline,
explains Louise Lucas, CEO of The Property Education Company (thepropertyeducationcompany.com). “A trap to avoid is to sell, rent for a while and take your eye off what property prices are doing,” she says. “In a short period of time they can rise and, if you don’t act, you may find yourself priced out of the market. That’s why, if upgrading, it’s best to buy in the same market you sold, as the loan you need should be lower than if you sold and bought when prices are high.”
When renovating, make timeless improvements with broad appeal – white walls, modern kitchens and bathrooms, and neat, low-maintenance gardens bunnings.co.nz
|
bunningsnz
Value adding If renovating for your own comfort now but to appeal to future buyers, doing your homework is imperative. Ask top agents in your area for market information on properties similar to yours and go to open homes to get a realistic idea of what’s on offer and how yours compares. Steve Lovegrove, director and principal at McDowell Professionals in Rotorua, says you can never go wrong by adding a deck – as long as you create functionality; for example, putting a roof over part of it. He’s seen laundries converted to highly desirable sculleries, ranch sliders replaced with more attractive French doors, and he says insulation, quality flooring, retrofitted double-glazing and new facings on kitchen joinery will all add enormously to a home’s appeal. “General kerb appeal is important too, so tidy your fencing and paint the front door for a good impression,” he adds. ◆
Words Kylie Jackes and Louise Richardson
Move or improve?
Cost of perfection Renovating your current home to better meet your needs may be an option worth exploring. Mark Trafford at Maintain To Profit says that costs vary, based on the extent of work and the home’s age and quality, and whether consents are needed, because council fees can be hefty. “It’s pretty difficult to estimate before a firm plan is in place, but you can expect a ballpark figure upwards of roughly $1800 per square metre for a modest renovation.” Mark says it’s not uncommon for a significant single-level extension to come out in the early to mid $100,000s. “You’re really best to start by talking to a licensed building practitioner and an architect to help you decide what to do,” he says.
Classic Christchurch Cottage If you have lots of imagination, the sky’s the limit. And when Shayden and Georgia found their little cottage they could see its potential. The old gem already had Marley Classic™ spouting and RP80® downpipes like many of the traditional style homes in the area. Shayden and Georgia were happy about this as Classic™ suited the house perfectly and is made of tough, low maintenance uPVC. While most runs had years of life left, they were able to replace and repair any damaged portions themselves as Marley rainwater systems are an easy DIY install.

Small items aren’t always best for tiny spaces. “A few larger pieces – a substantial dining table, a large mirror and a statement pendant – will make the space feel larger, rather than a lot of smaller pieces,” says interior stylist Amanda Smythe (amandasmythe.com).

Tiny living areas – especially those that don’t receive much natural light – will appear bigger and brighter when painted in warm, pale shades like primrose yellow or cream. Paint the interior window frame a crisp white to reflect as much light as possible.

Think vertically when planting up your garden, with wall baskets or green wall systems, which often come with built-in irrigation for set-and-forget care. Creeping plants, such as jasmine or white potato vine, provide maximum greenery in a minimal footprint and can also make wonderful privacy screening.

“The right flooring can do wonders for a small bathroom,” says interior stylist Louise Dammer (thehotelstylist.com). “Large neutral or white tiles will bounce light around the room, creating the illusion of space.” (For more artful styling with tiles, see our story on page 36.)

“A large rug works wonders at tricking your brain into thinking a space is wide,” says Shilpa Mohan. “Unlike a small one, it allows the floor to seem continuous. Ideally your rug should be large enough to sit completely under your furniture, otherwise the front legs of the sofa should sit over the rug.”

E
ven with money to burn, the chronic shortage in New Zealand’s housing supply makes it difficult for would-be buyers to find their home sweet home among the existing properties on the market. Building might seem the obvious solution, but constructing a home from scratch can be a daunting prospect for the uninitiated, an obstacle course of bureaucratic hoops to jump through, jargon to interpret, builders to find and endless decisions to make (and costs to incur) on the nitty-gritty design details. Simple solution This is where kit homes come into their own – with preset floor plans, a list of licensed builders and, in some cases, the main fixtures and fittings already arranged, a lot of the angst is taken away from you. You get to enjoy the fun bits, like decorating and picking paint colours, without tearing your hair out over getting the tapware delivered in time

for the plumber. It can also work out considerably cheaper, and with a shorter construction time. Clever clogs A recent addition to the home community is the Clever Living Co, a Bunnings-owned brand that is offering affordable, healthy homes that can be built off-site, then transported, or delivered as a package and built on-site by a registered builder. The idea is you find the land, order your choice of design, and the whole thing can be constructed, down to the light globes, in much less time than a from-scratch build, thanks to the standardised plans. Rachael Wyeth-Barnes of Clever Living Co says the quality inclusions account for the homes’ surging popularity. “They come with Kaboodle kitchens, Europeandesigned appliances, stylish bathrooms plus a Mitsubishi heat pump,” she explains. “We have a close-knit team of builders who we work with, and they’re all certified licensed building practitioners.’’

This makes them an ideal scale for a typically sized Kiwi family, while the smaller footprint models could be suitable for a beach bach, or as a granny flat to accommodate families at the sharp end of the rising trend for multi-generational living. Something to hide Bins, clotheslines and sheds are a fact of life, but shouldn’t be the star feature of your garden

nazzy outdoor kitchen? Check. Tranquil zen-style courtyard? Check. A gorgeous garden is the result of hours of planning and labour, so the last thing you want is a rotary clothesline plonked in the centre of it, but your backyard needs to work hard, too. Here’s how to factor less than glamorous essentials into the design for a garden where form meets function.
Washing day A clothesline is the most economical way to dry your clothes, but it’s unlikely to be your garden’s greatest design asset. The challenge is to find a way to hide the clothesline from sight without banishing it to the darkest corner of the block, where your laundry will never dry. Retractable lines can be neatly wound away, and even the classic rotary clothesline can now be packed out of sight, with newer versions able to be collapsed and removed from a ground socket when company calls.

Screening ideas
PRO TIP Well-thought-out garden screening can transform the feel of a garden, while creating the shelter and privacy we desire in our outdoor spaces A fold-down line attaches to a wall and collapses when not in use, but it’s still a bulky bit of hardware. Try distracting the eye with a green wall, decorative screen or similar statement feature next to the line or on an adjacent wall. For safety, position clotheslines away from thoroughfares to avoid running into them
Make sure your bin storage has ventilation and easy access
Waste warrior There’s nothing beautiful about bins, but somehow they often end up sitting centrestage in the front garden. Though they do need to be accessible – so you don’t have to drag them too far to get them to the kerb – they don’t need to be visible. Screens are an attractive option for hiding unsightly waste receptacles and to section off an area (see more below). Bin housing is an obvious solution too. Low sheds can be turned to this purpose, or there are custom-built options, which ideally should look nice and fit seamlessly into the garden scheme; try Absco Sheds’ ‘Monument’ wheelie bin cover. Bins are best hidden in a semi-open structure so they don’t smell. If you choose a flat-pack shed, ensure it has built-in vents, while custom housing should be built with slatted timber or a similar material that allows airflow. Screen stars Sometimes there’s no way to adequately disguise a garden shed (or bins, or a clothesline) as anything other than what it is, which is where screens can mask all manner of sins. “Garden screens can distract the eye from undesirable views by being features in themselves, for example, lasercut patterned metal screens or sculpted hedges,” says garden designer Catherine Rawnsley (beautifulgardens.co.nz). bunningsnz

When using plants as part of your screening, make sure they are a hardy variety, tolerant of wind and full sun
Paint your shed the same colour as the fence so it blends into the background
Solid barriers, such as steel panels or slatted versions, can also force the eye to concentrate on the garden rather than the view. “If a large area of fencing is unattractive or looks too dominating, the screening can be softened with planting,” suggests Catherine. Hedges can be a great option for screening, bunnings.co.nz

either within a garden or along its boundaries, and come with the bonus of providing a habitat for wildlife. “Unlike solid screens, they filter the wind, which helps to avoid turbulence on the leeward side of a shelter,” explains Catherine. However, “they can take time to grow to their desired height and require regular pruning.”

Patterned screens allow a glimpse of what’s beyond while disguising it, helping to enhance the sense of space
Shed the mess Between the pool gear, sports equipment and garden tools, most homes have enough stuff to fill a sizeable shed, but beware of going too big. When choosing your shed, avoid buying the biggest available. Instead, base your decision on the size of your garden. This way, the shed will become a nice feature of your space rather than the main one.
Sheds come in all shapes and sizes, but choosing one that matches your home – in style or colour – is the first and easiest way to make it a visual asset, not an eyesore. It’s also helpful to choose a material that can be customised, such as timber. When choosing a colour, you can either paint it to match the main house – like a little ‘mini me’ home – or choose a darker colour so the sun doesn’t reflect off it and it will seem to disappear into the garden. Darker hues such as charcoal are also a striking backdrop to greenery. ◆

Another way for nature to help out is pleaching – trees are planted in a row and their branches interwoven to form a screen. “Pleached trees, trained above head height, can break up the visual impact of an undesirable view, while still allowing light through,” explains Catherine. With any type of screening, important factors to consider are how high it needs to be, the direction of the sun (especially when you want to disguise a washing line or zone off an entertainment area; you’ll obviously want some sunlight in these situations), and the direction of the prevailing wind. “Try to create a balance between shelter and privacy without blocking out too much light or any desirable views,” advises Catherine.

N
ot traditionally considered the sexiest of colours, brown is making a comeback in modern interiors. There is a cocooning aspect to brown that fits with people’s desire to live in warmer, friendlier spaces – it’s also a colour that reflects and reinforces our connection to nature. “We are seeing a resurgence of brown in all its different shades from deep chocolate brown to soft ‘greiges’ (grey beiges),” says Davina Harper, colour expert at Dulux. “Brown is a lovely earthy colour that evokes a sense of reliability, security and safety.”

Why we love it Brown’s appeal lies in its versatility. Fill a space with dark cocoa, taupe and umber and you’ll feel instantly cosy. Or paint your walls a lighter hue to create a welcoming backdrop for every decorating style from rustic to retro. Brown has an earthy and soothing quality and is often referred to as nature’s neutral. So it’s not surprising that it plays nicely with almost every colour, and is the perfect foil for tactile timber, concrete, brick and terrazzo. How to choose Think about the purpose of the space. “In the living room, you’ll want to gravitate towards warm, earthy tones to generate feelings of comfort and relaxation,” says Rachel Lacy, colour category manager for PPG. “Whereas in the kitchen, where you want higher energy levels, go for a spicy brown with undertones of red and orange.”

Next, look at how much natural light your room gets. Lighter hues reflect artificial light more successfully than darker shades, so if your space has low natural light, go for a pale, buttery brown like amber or suede. Darker hues work best in open-plan spaces and any room where you want to create a cosy atmosphere – think shades of coffee and chocolate.

Paint a single wall for impact and add interest with varying textures and tones
Update it The great outdoors Lighter browns on exterior walls will reflect the sun and keep the inside of your home cooler, while darker walls will absorb heat and keep your house warmer. There is a trend toward the softer end of the spectrum, shades of brown with grey undertones. “I love the new brown/greys we are seeing coming through, which are becoming more popular on the outside of Kiwi homes,” says Davina Harper. “Colours like Dulux Te Kaha and Torere Double.”

Perfect pairing Dark browns look fantastic with bold colours like orange, or more muted hues such as pale pink. For a soothing 70s palette, pair with cream, apricot, clay and blush. Davina points out too, that, depending on their shade, browns generally tend to go well with other colours found in nature, “Especially the lovely sage greens we are seeing right now.” Combinations of brown and blue can be successful: think camel and navy, tobacco and teal. If unsure, look to colours that sit opposite brown on the colour wheel. “Try colour blocking a terracotta like PPG Warm Wassail against an adjoining wall in dusty blue like Shindig,” says Rachel Lacy. The right white Vanilla and chocolate, coffee and cream – you only have to look at a dessert menu to see why brown and white work so well. When choosing a white, look for a shade that shares a similar tone to your brown. Most browns have a warm undertone, so avoid cool whites that have a bluish base. “We are seeing warmer whites like Dulux Cardrona Half and Sandfly Point becoming more popular. These pair perfectly with warmer browns,” says Davina. ◆ bunnings.co.nz

Design hack
For a great go-to combination, Tricia recommends a mid- to dark-tone 60cm x 60cm floor tile, a light or white wall tile – either 60cm x 60cm or 60cm x 30cm – and a mosaic/feature tile on the most prominent wall. “For the feature, choose either a patterned tile or a white hexagonal, subway or penny round, with a darker grout that picks up the floor colour. This combination creates contrast, balance and a great focal point,” she says.

uilt to last – and to be lived with long-term – bathroom tiles need to be chosen with care. Determining the best style, colour, pattern, combination and size can seem overwhelming, but if you’re guided by the space you’re working with, you can create a designer tile look that makes the most of your bathroom. Style guide When selecting bathroom tiles, interior designer Tricia Mancini, of PMG Design,
says the first step is considering the look you want to achieve: light and airy, warm and enveloping, contemporary or sophisticated? This will get you thinking about colour combinations. “For an interesting designer look, it’s best to use two to three different tile selections. Any more than three and the space starts to look cluttered,” explains Tricia. “Bathroom fixtures and other materials will also impact the overall look, so decide whether you want to create contrast with bold tapware or prefer more subtle accessories, so the
tiles are the star.” When it comes to size, be guided by the dimensions of your bathroom. “A large-format tile will look fabulous in a larger space, but will lose impact in a small powder room. A better option in a compact zone is a 60cm square, a 60cm x 30cm rectangle tile or a softly patterned mosaic,” says Tricia. Though plain at first glance, much-loved neutral tiles offer myriad benefits. “They’re a timeless canvas against which you can layer pattern, colour and texture and be more creative with a striking vanity,

For a streamlined look, run the same tiles over the floor and walls
mirror and fixtures,” says Tricia Mancini. “White neutral tiles are bright, crisp and cheery, while warmer-toned neutrals create a cosy, cocooning feel.” What’s trending There’s a smorgasbord of on-trend options that offer enduring style. One of the most coveted looks is earthy materials, colours and finishes – think raw concrete, large-format marble-look and timber-look tiles. The beauty of these stone- and wood-look tiles is they combine the organic appeal of natural materials with the robust characteristics of ceramic tiles, meaning they’re low maintenance and ideal for wet areas. Matt and lappato (semi-polished) finishes are also popular, as they offer a softer, sophisticated look and are less likely to show water marks or smudges than gloss tiles. Subways remain a perennial favourite. White is the classic, but as with other parts of the home, colour is creeping in here too; from brights to pastels, coloured subway tiles offer an appealing alternative to white, with blues and greens currently popular for those seeking a dash of colour. Visual trickery With a wealth of colours, sizes and patterns available, tiles are a fantastically functional tool for solving any quirks or shortfalls in a bathroom’s size or configuration. Enhance space Tiling from floor to ceiling creates a luxe look and helps enhance the sense of space. Go for large-format tiles with a rectified edge, which minimises grout lines and lends a seamless appearance to a room. Another tip is to install tiles on a 45-degree diagonal, as this will make the tiles and room appear larger. Tiles, suggests using patterned tiles or mosaics such as penny rounds to create a feature wall behind the bath or vanity. “Pairing colour with natural materials can also create a more intimate feel,” she says. “A combination of blues with crisp white and a wood-look tile laid in a herringbone pattern offers a contemporary and stylish look.” Boost light Pale colours and glossy finishes have great reflective qualities. There’s a reason why the classic gloss-white subway tiles are so popular; they can work wonders to counteract a dark and dreary bathroom. “Using gloss tiles to reflect light and the use of mirrors to create the illusion of a larger space should always be considered for any bathroom renovation,” says Nicole. Vertical vs horizontal If you’ve got a long, narrow bathroom or a compact, square space, play with tile direction to visually alter the dimensions. Rectangular tiles laid across the floor will create the illusion of width, while if laid vertically on the walls will make the ceiling look higher. it to your advantage,” says Tricia. “If you have an element like a low bulkhead or a toilet in your direct line of sight, create an alternate focal point with an eye-catching floor-to-ceiling patterned wall.” 3D effects For a bold three-dimensional look, try using contrasting grout that’s significantly lighter or darker than the tile. This is particularly effective as a device to highlight an unusual tile shape, such as fish scales or hexagons, or pattern, like herringbone or diamond configurations. Coloured grouts on feature walls also add an unexpected point of difference. ◆

luminium window frames are built to last, but if trends have changed since they were first installed, their longevity might seem like a curse. Fortunately, a spritz of spray paint can transform dated 80s frames into on-trend black – or any colour you fancy.

Colouring in Make sure the primer is dry before applying the top coat – look to the instructions on the can for application times. Shake the can thoroughly and apply in the same way as the primer, aiming for thin and even coverage. You may need to apply up to three coats, waiting about 20 minutes before the next one – but, again, use the product instructions as a guide.

Prep the area Painting is easy, but the time and effort you expend in prepping is what makes the difference. Start by removing window furnishings and fixtures, then take any unfixed windows out of the frame entirely. Thoroughly clean the window, inside and out, removing all dirt and dust. Put down a dust sheet to protect the floors. Tape off around the frame using a good-quality painter’s tape. Press the tape into the corners with a putty knife and use shorter lengths – around 30cm – to make it easier to get a snug fit against the frame. Use sheets of paper kitchen towel or newspaper to cover the reveals (the window’s timber surround), securing it in place with more tape – this will work to protect the timber, as long as it’s not saturated with paint. Tape off the window, and cover the glass completely in paper towel or newspaper.

Prime time If the windows haven’t been painted before, you’ll need to use an etch primer spray paint first. This product contains a combination of resins that will help the paint adhere to the smooth surface of the metal. The best way to use spray paint is to hold the can between 10cm and 25cm

SAFETY FIRST When spray painting, it’s very important to use safety equipment: a respirator, safety glasses to protect your eyes, and a pair of gloves – thin latex disposables are fine – to protect the skin on your hands
Clean up Take off the painter’s tape and paper towel before the paint has dried completely. If, despite your efforts, any paint has leaked under the tape, let it dry and remove it carefully from the glass with a razor blade. Once the paint is completely dry, return the window to its frame, rehang the window furnishings, then sit back and admire your newly stylish room! u

hat makes a home smart is the ability to operate wireless and wired devices connected to the home network via a smartphone, tablet or smart hub. This allows you to turn on lights, control powerpoints, operate door locks, stream music to a speaker and programme your sprinklers, all from your phone. The benefits of new-tech living include convenience, peace of mind and even potential energy savings.
Setting up Smart home set-ups range from the high end – fully integrated, professionally installed systems, which control everything from your blinds to the air-conditioner and garage door – to inexpensive DIY models that can often be fairly easily retrofitted. Many appliances or systems can be controlled using an app on a smart device, connected via bluetooth or wi-fi. However, you may also want to consider the benefits of using a smart hub (see box, opposite), which enables you to coordinate your smart products so they talk to
each other and perform functions or ‘routines’, like turning on the kettle at a set time after your heating comes on. Certain smart home controllers, like Google Home, respond to voice commands. Switching on Easy to retrofit or install in new builds, adding smart LED lighting can be as simple as replacing a light bulb. It can be operated remotely via an app so you can, for example, switch it on and off to give the impression someone is at home – handy for security. And, says Sengled director David Clerk, “You can receive live energy reports on your phone for each smart light so you can easily monitor usage.” Great for entertaining, some smart lights, such as Philips Hue, offer myriad lighting effects, with a spectrum of colours from the one bulb that can be synced to your music, TV and games for an immersive effect. The possibilities with smart lights range from novel effects (bulbs that flash colours when you receive a text message) to the incredibly practical, such as versions that incorporate movement sensors – perfect

With smart wi-fi plugs you can plug into a standard general-purpose outlet and, via an app, it will enable you to turn the power on or off. Some models of smart plugs also have the added feature of monitoring energy usage. Connected via your home network, these smart plugs can provide power to devices when triggered by a movement sensor, timer settings or even synced with sunrise and sunset times. Garden gadgets Smart home technology is also inching outdoors. Devices can be used to control garden and path lighting to achieve different effects, which can be

T
here comes a time in a DIYer’s life when the basic tool kit begins to seem inadequate. When you find yourself starting to take on tasks such as removing and rehanging doors, building partition walls and then plastering them, or building a deck or pergola, it’s time to consider adding some pro-grade tools, such as the following, to your kit. Clamps A clamp can be your second set of hands. They can hold one end of materials while you fix off the other, they’re an essential tool for temporary props and bracing, they can hold a joint in place while you nail or screw, and hold materials together while glue sets. Look for heavyduty clamps that can be easily operated with one hand, and buy a range of lengths. Chalk line A chalk line or chalk reel is a long, retractable string in a container of powdered chalk. Reel it out, hold taut along a surface where you need a straight line marked and flick the line against the surface for an instant dead straight line five, 10, 20 or more metres long. Chisel set Chisels are used for everything from fine cabinetmaking to fitting locks and hinges. The very sharp blade can shave away timber and cut very precise sections. “Chisels, like good knives, can be resharpened for years. Invest in a good chisel set and sharpening tools and then, most importantly, take the time to learn how to use both correctly,” says Matt Francis of Stanley Black & Decker. Hammer drill Many drills (corded and cordless) have a hammer function that adds impact force behind the drill bit, helping to drill through rock, stone, brick and concrete. For bigger projects and repetitive work, use a rotary hammer drill, which provides a lot more impact energy. Large power saw A smaller blade-size circular saw will only get you so far. You may need to step up to a more powerful larger-bladed model, such as a 235mm blade, which will give you a maximum cutting depth of around 85mm. You could consider a 305mm blade sliding compound mitre saw. These bench-mounted saws allow for accurate straight and multi-angled cutting of timber more than 100mm thick.

bunningsnz
The wish list You’ll find these next-level gadgets genuinely useful
Multi-tool Describing a multi-tool, it’s impossible not to sound like a latenight television infomercial – it saws, cuts, sands, drills, bolts! A multi-tool is a hand-held unit with interchangeable heads, allowing you to swap from an oscillating cutting blade to a detail sanding head to a jigsaw, drill or ratchet head. With its compact head, you can get into tight corners to sand, cut or drill. Laser level Once only the domain of the top-shelf tradie, laser levels are now available in a range of affordable styles. They give you the ability to project a line around a room, horizontally or vertically, giving you instant, super-accurate levels. Be aware that only some models are suitable for outdoor use. Tool storage You might be happy with a simple tool box but as your kit expands, having a place for everything will make your DIY projects run smoother. There are fantastic options – from wheeled tool chests to workbenches with tool-hanging pegboards and integrated or add-on storage units – that will see your shed transformed into a serious workshop.
Safety first in every kit Safety should always be your number-one priority, and that includes anyone watching you work, too. Ensure that your kit contains: quality earmuffs or plugs safety glasses and goggles (goggles give side protection from flying debris and dust) breathing protection to suit your work good-quality gloves boots, protective toe if needed safety vest hard hat sunscreen irst-aid kit f
EXPERT TIP “Historically, a tool belt or apron was an item you only saw on the building site. Nowadays with modern designs and custom pouches available, as a DIYer you can easily take up this practice to hold tools in a handy position on your belt while you work on a project” Mike Jaggs Bunnings hand tools buyer
Sander Sanders are the essential finishing tool for larger projects. They range from small palm sanders to large belt models, so do your research to work out which best suits your needs. Most are corded but there are now a number of good battery models. Power planer This provides the same finish as a fixed-blade plane, except multiple rotating blades are used to shave off timber super fast. It’s a useful multipurpose tool. You can take a piece of rough timber and quickly convert it to a fine finish, remove bumps and imperfections and smooth joints or do tricky fixes, such as removing a millimetre or two from the edge of a sticking door, far more accurately than you could with a power saw. Sliding bevel This is effectively an angle finder and marking tool. It has a thick handle with an adjustable blade that can be locked in place at any angle. Use it to determine an angle then transfer that angle to a piece of timber for cutting or for setting a power saw cutting angle when repeated cuts are needed. Spirit levels A basic 800mm spirit level will do many tasks, but adding other lengths to your kit will make life easier. Long levels, up to 2.4 metres in length, make it simple to accurately check levels and mark lines over longer distances, while shorter torpedo levels – generally 20-30cm long – fit in your back pocket and allow accuracy in tight spaces. If you do a lot of landscape DIY, a multi-sided post level lets you check two post faces and post plumb at the same time. ◆

Get more for less with water-efficient fixtures that enhance your experience and decrease your bills
S
aving water is a year-round priority – not only do we not want to see our money go, quite literally, down the drain, but water efficiency is key for protecting the natural environment. At a time when a growing population increases pressure on our lakes and rivers, and climate change is also predicted to affect rainfall patterns, being water-conscious is something everyone can be part of. The WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) regulatory scheme helps New Zealanders make informed choices about basic plumbing products, sanitary ware and water-using appliances, and is designed to improve our levels of water efficiency. Change starts at home In your home, WELS is applied to taps for sinks, showers, toilets and appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers. (It does not cover bath taps, garden hoses and sprinklers.) The more WELS stars it has, the more water efficient the product is. All new showers, sink and basin fittings sold in New Zealand must have a flow restrictor device/disc fitted, which in turn restricts the flow to an acceptable level to enable a WELS rating to be assigned. Waste not If you want to improve your home’s water efficiency without buying new tapware, it’s possible to update your existing taps. A water-reducing aerator is an ingenious addition for reducing water usage, although it may not suit the aesthetics of every tap. When replacing tapware, how much water you can save will depend on the product’s star rating. Switching from a 3-star to a 4-star shower head could

New technology developed by tapware manufacturers means that water-efficient showers can still feel fabulous. “If you engineer the shower from the beginning, knowing the flow

Each brand has their own technique, but it will usually involve creating force by colliding jets of water against each other, against angled surfaces or by creating spirals of water. ◆

e’re all fixated on organisation at the moment, but turning this lust for order towards the kitchen can help with another worthy obsession: food waste. “A dream pantry has shallow shelves – no dark mysterious depths into which things disappear forever,” says home organisation consultant Liz Bradley (thetidylady.co.nz). The size of it If you’re planning a kitchen from scratch, this is the optimal time to dedicate thought to your ideal pantry, whether that’s as big as a walk-in ‘second kitchen’ or as modest as a tall cabinet. Jessica Haslem of Flexi Storage suggests, “The more you can fit in the pantry, the less you’ll have cluttering your bench or cooking space. Think about your household: how many people is your pantry feeding? Are there kids with school lunches? Or is it just you?” Keen cooks can make the most of the extra space for kitchen tools as well as ingredients. When planning your space, measure the ceiling height as well. “If you have high ceilings, make the most of them,” says Jessica. There are always seldom-used platters and servingware that can be stored above head height.
What’s in store Once you’ve mapped out the pantry’s size, choose your storage options. Narrow open shelving – about 300mm deep – is ideal, so you can see everything on the shelves. The less often frequent snackers are delving about in the pantry the better.” To avoid the pantry descending into chaos, give everything a home, embrace containers, and label! “The simplest thing to do is – after a really good weed out of expired packets – just get a container that fiddly little packets and jars can all fit inside,” advises Liz. “This also works for floppy packets of soup mix and sauces that never stand up by themselves!” ¿

Here are our top tips: In plain sight Clear storage is the best for finding what you need. Remove items from plastic or cardboard wrappers so you can see the food itself.
Perfect seal Choose airtight storage containers, especially for infrequently used items like flours, nuts, seeds and spices. You can seriously extend the shelf life with highquality sealed containers. Stack it Where space is limited, choose storage based on the height of your shelving. Most of the wasted space in pantries is in the gaps between the shelves.

Veg out
M
ost winter crops are coming to an end, but it’s a sign of warmer times – and more vegies, herbs and fruits – to come. If you prepare early and get your beds up to scratch now, you’ll enjoy a productive patch this spring. Follow these tips to get a head start on a bumper harvest.
Supercharge summer’s bounty by taking the time to enrich your vegie beds before the growing season
1
War on weeds Weeds can pop up anywhere, anytime. “Keeping weeds at bay allows crops to make maximum use of nutrients, moisture and sunlight,” says Jack Hobbs, horticulturist and manager of Auckland Botanic Gardens. “The smaller the weeds the easier they are to remove. And as the old saying goes, one year’s seed is seven years’ weed, so make sure to get rid of them before they set seed and cause problems for years to come.”
3
Nourish to flourish A good, productive vegie patch starts from the ground up, so revitalise and rejuvenate your soil by adding organic matter and compost. You’ll improve your chances of achieving bountiful crops if your garden beds get a generous dose of nutrients and soil improver, such as Seasol PowerFeed, which doesn’t need digging in.

Fix it
Tip If you have irrigation, check that lines, drippers or sprinklers aren’t blocked and replace worn parts. Thinking about installing irrigation? Buy DIY kits in store and get to it now!
Boost your crops
2
Out with the old If your winter vegies have done their dash, harvest the last of them and add the rest to the compost heap or green waste. If pests or diseases affect any parts of the plants, discard them so you don’t spread the problem.
Use the last weeks of cooler weather to dig out old crops and prep your soil for spring

Water works Over time, soil can get hydrophobic (water repellent), meaning that despite your best efforts, water will not sink through the soil to your plants’ roots. You can ensure water retention with the use of compost. “Regular applications of compost enable sufficient retention and movement of moisture in soil,” says Jack. Wetting agents are useful for containers. These agents help soil absorb water and are available in both granular and liquid options for easy application; ensure you choose one suitable for food crops.
5
Preparing for planting Most leafy greens, including spinach and lettuce, can go in the ground now. Feed them regularly with a complete fertiliser. “Don’t forget to apply a layer of mulch, like pea straw or a blend of aged pine bark mulch and compost, to keep the soil warm and help suppress weeds,” says Sue Edwards of Seasol. “Also, get a head start on spring and summer crops, like tomatoes, by sowing seeds in a mini greenhouse and keeping them on a warm windowsill.” Once the weather warms, they’ll be ready for transplanting outside. ◆

Spare the cane Weave a little magic to give new life to old wicker furnishings like this pre-loved magazine rack

Before
ane furniture is bang on trend, so it’s worth rummaging through the garage (or second-hand shops) for vintage pieces left
over from cane’s last moment in the spotlight. However, while it is pliable, as it ages it becomes brittle, and old furniture is often damaged, with splits or tears in the binding that wraps around the joints. It’s simple enough to replace the broken pieces with new cane, securing with timber adhesive and tapping in tiny nails to hold in place. We’ve mended a retro magazine rack, but the same techniques can be applied to repair vintage chairs, tables or other storage pieces.

Working on a drop cloth, use a multitool or pliers to pull broken or bent pieces from the frame and remove any loose nails or staples.
To reinforce any wrapped joints, trim off frayed cane then bind the wrapping cane around the joint, pulling under the previous wrap to hold it tight. Tap in a nail to hold the end underneath.
Reuse the removed pieces in other areas, cutting to fit, dabbing adhesive in the holes and securing with masking tape to dry. Wipe away excess with a damp cloth.
Place the rack on a flat surface to work from the inside, tapping nails into the crossover joints. If you’re having difficulties, use a pair of pliers to hold the nail while tapping with a hammer.
PRO TIP Cane isn’t as porous as timber – the most effective finishes to use on it include water-based enamel paint for all-over colour, a highgloss varnish for a lacquered effect or a tinted satin varnish for a matte finish
To fit any new cane pieces, use an 8mm drill bit to widen the holes, drilling at the same angle as the existing holes. Dab some adhesive into the holes, wiping away excess.
Use 120-grit abrasive paper to sand the magazine rack all over, removing the original varnish, smoothing any breakout around the holes and cleaning up around the joints.

Cut new cane pieces, angling the ends for a better fit into the holes, twisting the cane to sit straight. For a tight fit, soak the cane in warm water for 10 minutes to make it more pliable.
Wear gloves and a mask, and work in a well ventilated area to lightly apply coats of spray varnish to the rack, leaving it to dry between each coat and moving the rack each time to make sure you saturate all areas. u

Shelf help
Making the most of your vertical spaces is as easy as arranging objects on floating shelves. Follow our tips for styling success
F
loating shelves, stocked with pretty and personal pieces, are an easy way to transform a plain wall into a gorgeous and practical feature. The magic of these shelves lies in the invisible fixings. A metal bracket with protruding tubes fixes directly to the wall (screws and fixings for both masonry and stud walls are included). These slide into a cavity in the back of the shelf, which then conceals all the hardware. Note the load capacity. The larger shelves we’ve used here can handle up to 10kg for masonry walls and 5kg for plasterboard, while the smallest shelf can hold up to 5kg in masonry and 3kg in plasterboard. This makes them perfect for an elegant display, but not suited to storing your entire cookbook collection! Ready to style? Follow our six easy steps to help you ace the art of display.

Make it Create a display
1
Shelf pick Choose shelving in the same style and colour, but try different lengths and thicknesses to add visual interest. Mounting them asymmetrically looks elegant and less formal than a straight stack.
2
Take aim Install your shelves at a comfortable height so you can easily see the pieces on display, without the risk of them being knocked off.
Words Shelley Tustin. Photography James Moffatt, stylist Stephanie Powell
3
Go personal Display treasured things, such as photographs or sentimental objects. The idea is to bring your own personality into the room.
4
Group items This will make pieces stand out, while ensuring your arrangement has some blank space to stop it looking too busy and cluttered.
5
Think harmony Place an equal number of items on each shelf and balance taller pieces with short ones. Tall vases and artworks are good for creating height, while books make a stylish plinth.
6
Add greenery A potted plant or a vase of flowers or foliage adds instant vibrancy. Trailing plants look amazing draped over the edge of a shelf, or choose something perkier for height. â—†

Serves 4–6 1kg whole snapper, cleaned 1 lemon, sliced, plus extra wedges to serve Olive oil cooking spray Coriander sprigs, finely sliced red onion and spring onion, for garnish 100g smoking chips, for grilling 1 smoker box Portuguese marinade 3 long red chillies, seeded and chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp sea salt flakes 1½ tsp sweet paprika 1 tsp ground coriander ¼ tsp coarsely ground black pepper 1 tbsp chopped fresh oregano 2 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp brown sugar
1 Soak the smoking chips in a bowl of water for 30 minutes. To make the marinade, place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Reserve ¼ cup of the marinade. Place the snapper on a tray and cut four slashes across the top. Spread the remaining marinade over both sides and inside the snapper; cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes. 2 Drain the smoking chips. Heat the barbecue to a medium-high heat. Spread the chips in the smoker box and sit the smoker box on the hot plate. Lower the barbecue lid and allow the chips to heat and smoke for about 20 minutes. 3 Place three lemon slices down the centre of the snapper and the remaining slices inside the cavity. Place the snapper in a fish griller or on a non-stick barbecue mat and spray with olive oil. Place the griller or mat on the barbecue hotplate. Cook with the lid down for 30-35 minutes, turning halfway, until charred and cooked through (the flesh will be white). 4 Transfer to a serving platter. Garnish with the coriander and finely sliced red onion and spring onion. Serve with lemon wedges. Use the reserved marinade to drizzle over the flesh once removed from the bones.
TIP: You can use the marinade for thick fish fillets, green prawns, butterflied chicken, chicken fillets and chicken wings. To increase the heat, add some chilli seeds or ¼ tsp cayenne pepper. Grilled corn cobs with coriander avocado sauce Serves 6 75g soft butter 1½ tsp finely grated lime zest 1½ tsp garlic salt 1½ tsp onion powder 1 tsp smoked paprika Cracked black pepper 6 cobs of corn (vacuum-sealed) Dried chilli flakes and chopped coriander, to serve
Coriander avocado sauce 1 ripe avocado ¼ cup lime juice 1 tsp honey ¼ cup Greek yoghurt 2 tbsp chopped coriander ½ tsp sriracha chilli sauce
1 Combine the butter, lime zest, garlic salt, onion powder and paprika, and season with pepper. Spread over the cobs. 2 Heat the barbecue to a medium-high heat. Add the corn. Cook with the lid down for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until charred. 3 To make the coriander avocado sauce, blend all the ingredients with ¼ cup of water in a blender or food processor until smooth. Spread some sauce on a serving board. Place the corn cobs on top and spread with more sauce. Sprinkle with the chilli flakes and coriander. Serve with the remaining sauce on the side. Fresh corn option: If using fresh corn, as pictured, peel back the corn husks, discarding the few dry outer husks, leaving the remaining husks intact and attached to the cob. Discard silks. Tie the husks together on each cob with string or discarded corn husk. Trim the dry ends with scissors. Lower the cobs into boiling water, leaving the husks out of the water. Boil for 5 minutes, allow to cool, then follow the recipe from step 1 for vacuum-sealed cobs. When barbecuing, let the husks hang over the edge of the barbecue and cook with the lid down resting on the husks.

Greek chicken souvlaki kebabs
4 Heat an oiled barbecue to medium-high. Cook the skewers for 5 minutes with the lid down, turning halfway and brushing with more oil until charred and just cooked through. Remove and transfer to a clean plate. 5 Drizzle with some of the remaining marinade and turn until coated. Arrange on a serving platter. Sprinkle with the chilli and herbs and serve with the rest of the marinade on the side.
TIP: With minimal cooking on a hot barbecue, skirt steak produces a tender kebab, but you can also use rump, sirloin, porterhouse or eye fillet to make the skewers. Unused marinade can be stored in a jar in the fridge for up to one month.

Plant pick
Strawberry delight Name: Fragaria x ananassa What they look like Deep red berries pop against small, vivid green serrated leaves. Dug into a garden bed, this low grower will throw out runners to make new ones, and in time and with the right care, will fill its allotted space with a carpet of greenery and ruby-hued fruit. Where they grow Strawberries will flourish from seed or runners in most climates, but are best grown in full sun to ensure your fruit thrive. Lack of sun will mean little or no flavour for your summer berries. They do well in pots and hanging planters, which also lets you move them if conditions get too harsh. They are shallow-rooted, so ensure the soil doesn’t dry out, especially if planted in a windy spot. Why we love them The best time to plant strawberries is from June to October in the warmer northern regions, and August to October in the cooler southern regions, with the fruiting season running from spring to autumn. Easy to handle, they’re a perfect starter plant for a beginner grower. How to grow them Start with good quality soil or a potting mix designed for fruit, then surround with straw to lock in moisture and keep fruit off the soil. Keep well fed with a solution of Seasol fortnightly. Runners will appear during the fruiting season and should be pruned off and, if you like, potted to make new plants. Once the plants start fruiting, install netting to protect from birds. ◆
