Find out what’s new, what’s trending and what’s inspiring us around the home and garden this season

A word from our editor
It’s basically a given that a DIY project will take longer than you expect. We tackled a biggish tree-planting job over the holidays and hit clay. Hours of back-breaking work with a pick and a shovel later, with just one hole to show for it, we threw in the towel and hired a post hole digger. Lesson learned: plan for everything! If you have a DIY task ahead, our project planning feature on page 23 might help you avoid a few pitfalls, while our step-by-step stories list just what you need – saving mid-project runs to store – and guide you through seamlessly. Enjoy the issue!

Monochrome magic Elegant, sophisticated and high impact, a black-and-white colour scheme is a decorating trick that’s easy to master
T
he monochromatic theme is a classic aesthetic that’s been around for a long time. But now we’re seeing a new take on it: applying the colour scheme throughout, using strong geometric pieces, warm timber and lush foliage as accents. As you can see, the results are striking – and easy to live with, too.

On a piece of scrap paper, draw a hexagon with 5cm sides (this should create an area of 9-10cm diameter). Cut out the hexagon with scissors to make a template. Using the paper template, draw eight hexagons on a cork tile with a pen. Tip: Draw the hexagons abutting to reduce the number of cuts you’ll need to do later. Use the ruler and pen to draw three diamond shapes within each hexagon (refer to the picture top left). Write B and W on the relevant diamonds to mark which will be painted. Using masking tape, mask off all areas of cork tile except those diamonds marked B. Apply two coats of black paint with a roller, leaving to dry between each. Remove tape. Apply black paint to one cork tile and white paint to another with rollers, applying two coats and leaving to dry between each. Use the pen to draw a hexagon with 14cm sides (this should create an area of 24-28cm diameter) on the unpainted underside of each tile. Wearing protective gloves and using the steel ruler and a craft knife, carefully cut out both hexagon shapes. On the unpainted surface of the black hexagon, use the ruler and pen to draw 1cm-wide lines to create a pattern (refer to the picture top left). Carefully cut along the lines of the pattern. Select which black pieces to use, then position them on top of the white hexagon. Mark where the pieces sit with pencil outlines, and scribble wavy lines within them to indicate which areas will receive glue. Remove the outlines with an eraser. Ensure the white hexagon and black pieces are dust free, then apply lines of glue on the back of each black piece and along the scribbles on the white hexagon. Leave to cure for 20 minutes before carefully pressing the pieces into place. ◆

Finding the right white with Dulux Colours of New Zealand®
Dulux Ōkārito
Dulux Ōkārito
When deciding on what colour to paint a room, most people will be looking for a white or a neutral – for good reasons too; they’re easy to live with, go with almost anything and can be easily matched to other colours. Dulux Colours of New Zealand® are famous for their large range of whites, naturals and neutrals, designed to work well in Kiwi homes. Warm or cool? Most whites or neutrals can be described as being either ‘cool’ or ‘warm’. As a general rule cool whites make a space appear larger, while warm whites make a space feel cosier. Popular Cool Whites Dulux Ōkārito is the most popular colour in the Dulux range. It’s a crisp, versatile white that goes with almost anything. Another popular cool white to try is Dulux Mt Aspiring – it’s a soft white with a hint of grey.
Popular Warm Whites Dulux Cardrona and Sandfly Point are both popular warm whites. For a softer warm white try Dulux Cardrona Half or Sandfly Point Half. Two important things to think about When choosing a colour, it’s important to take into account any existing colours in the room. Items that are more expensive or difficult to change like flooring, curtains or benchtops should all be considered. For example, if you have grey carpet or a concrete floor, opt for a cool white like Dulux Mt Aspiring or Ōkārito. If you have golden wooden floors or a cream benchtop, a warmer white like Dulux Cardrona could work well.

Dulux Sandfly Point Half
Another thing to consider when choosing a white for your home is whether the room is north or south facing. Cool whites tend to work better in sunnier rooms where there is plenty of natural light. While warm whites can help brighten south facing rooms that get less sun. Ready to find your Dulux white ? Visit the Dulux Colour Wall in Bunnings to see our large range of whites and neutrals. To test your colour at home, pick up Dulux Colour Chips, the Most Loved Whites & Neutrals brochure or buy a Dulux Sample Pot. Cut out bunny ear shapes from the foam and stick onto the inside of the paper cups with PVA glue. Using a fine marker pen, draw bunny faces onto the cups under the ears. Using scissors, cut pipe cleaners to desired length of whiskers (we got three whiskers from one pipe cleaner). Using the sharp tip of the scissors, poke two small holes into each cheek of the bunny faces. Push pipe cleaner whiskers into each hole, bending the ends on the inside of the cups to hold them in place. Note: These cups are for decoration only.

Decide how many colours to use and set out a bowl for each one. Pour 2 cups of hot water into each bowl, then add 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 10 drops of food colouring. Using tongs, gently lower eggs into the bowls, ensuring they are submerged in the coloured solution. Tip: Keep the eggs in the solution for varying amounts of time to create darker or lighter stain effects. After desired time, remove dyed eggs with tongs and place in an egg carton to dry.

here’s no need to put your outdoor room on ice this winter. To create a cosy, trans-seasonal outdoor space, there are three essential features: protection from the weather, a heat source for the very coldest months and practical and ambient lighting. Nail these elements and you’ll have a year-round space you can enjoy, regardless of the weather forecast.

Take shelter
Good weather protection – either a semi-permanent fixture or permanent structure – means you can enjoy being outdoors all year round. If you already have a roofed patio, consider attaching outdoor blinds. These work like temporary walls, which can go up and down as required. They provide protection from the sun during hotter months, and from rain and wind at colder times of the year. “It’s important to consider protection from the elements,” says landscape architect Paul Gallagher of Mace Landscape Group (macelandscapes.co.nz). “The sides of your pergola can attain shelter screens or windbreaks in different forms:

from solid screens, louvres and folding blinds to strategically placed planters.” For small spaces, like a courtyard or balcony, consider a freestanding structure that you can move around as needed. Portable planter pots or troughs allow instant foliage screening, too, suggests Paul. Permanent structures provide a more durable solution. The downside is you often can’t control the level of sun they let in or water they keep out. Also, bear in mind that most permanent outdoor structures will require some form of approval from council or a certifier. “An outdoor pergola with an impermeable roof that exceeds 20m2 in area will require council consent.
bunnings
This includes a roof with opening louvres,” says Paul. While a permanent structure with louvres may be a more expensive choice, it does offer complete control, says Paul. “Open or close or
adjust accordingly for shade from the sun or shelter from the rain,” he says. “Add in an option like radiant heating emanating from the framework and you are sorted no matter the season.”

The only con is you’ll need to replace the gas bottle.” Consider a fire pit or chimenea. “Fire pits are a great source of heat and perfect for entertaining – nothing beats an open fire. Chimeneas, on the other hand, traditionally
only have a small opening and are enclosed all the way up to the chimney, which helps contain the fire,” says Daniel. For heating a larger area, he recommends combining a few heating sources, such as heat strips installed in the ceiling, a gas area heater for the entertaining zone and a fire pit for ambience. Plan it Try different light sources to evoke a cosy, romantic ambience
Lighting is one of the simplest ways to make an area inviting in winter, when darkness falls early. “It also increases your home’s safety and security,” says Jason Neophytou, lifestyle expert at HPM. If the space suits, consider hardwired lights. “They’re more powerful than solar or battery-operated lights, plus they come in a larger range of colours and styles,” says Jason. “However, they need professional

installation, so can be more costly.” You’ll need to make sure your chosen lights are designed for outdoors, so check with your electrician before buying. In small spaces, cluster small, portable lights to create ambience. In a larger backyard, combine lights from a variety of sources. “Up/down wall lights are great for entertaining spaces as they highlight features while drawing the eye away from less desirable areas,”

says Jason. “Bollards and bunker lights are ideal for safely illuminating uneven surfaces and creating a path of light for visitors, while floodlights are perfect for entryways and garages.” Solar lighting comes in all shapes and sizes from spotlights to strings, and can be a budget DIY option. Solar deck lights can be installed straight into the deck, while solar garden bed spotlights are fantastic for highlighting feature plants or walkways. ¿

hether you’re renovating the bathroom, planning a spa-inspired ensuite or updating a few fittings, choosing a vanity is a big decision. As the room’s storage and grooming hub, it’s a high-use fixture that, with the right accessories, can be as practical as it is beautiful. Size matters First, measure the size of your bathroom and the space available to accommodate the vanity. “Plot out your bathroom and mark out how you want your layout to look using one of the many free online design tools,” suggests Jan Antoni Glinkowski, project manager at Style Plus Renovations (styleplusrenovations.co.nz). Allow for clearance to open doors and fully extend drawers, and space from wet zones like the bath and shower. A good clearance is 600mm in front of the vanity, so you can move around it comfortably. “Also, leave between 400mm and 500mm from the side edge of the vanity to the centre of the toilet pan,” says Jan. Consider who will be using the bathroom and your priorities for the space. Do you want to maximise bench space, boost storage or calm the morning rush hour with twin basins? “A double vanity is a good

choice in situations where you often have more than one person needing to use a basin at the same time,” says Jan. Off the wall Style preferences, plumbing and the space available will influence whether a freestanding or wall-mounted vanity will be the best choice. “A floor-standing vanity is a great option when replacing an old vanity as it will cover the existing plumbing and floor area and save the cost of re-covering the floor,” says Regan Clare, business development manager at Stein (stein.co.nz). Wall-mounted vanities are a good choice for smaller spaces such as an ensuite or powder room, says Bunnings bathroom buyer Liam Gregory. “They can provide the illusion of more space in a bathroom and match well with a wall-hung toilet pan.”

Style speak As a focal point of a bathroom, the vanity helps set the style tone, so choose one that reflects the look and feel you want to achieve. Minimalist Nordic and Scandi styles are highly coveted, which has led to an increase in the popularity of timber veneers. “Veneers add a focal point to bathrooms,” says Jan. “They

PRO TIP Draw up a floor plan that includes all fixed features. Factor in space to open drawers and move around, and try to avoid narrow gaps between walls and the vanity to make cleaning easier can be great statement pieces, but polish them from time to time to maintain the look.” White on white is an aesthetic with timeless appeal and suits many styles and budgets. “A basic white vanity and a white vitreous china vanity top transform a tired bathroom. It also
allows you to be creative and colourful with decor and accessories,” says Liam. Which basin? Choosing complementary basins and tapware comes down to space and style requirements. “For a compact yet functional bathroom, outside of the realms of powder rooms, I recommend an inset basin, or choosing a vanity that comes complete with a prefabricated inset top,” says Liam. “This provides you with more countertop space as the basin is not projected above the vanity.” Both countertop and undermounted sinks have pros and cons. A countertop basin creates a statement, generally has excellent water capacity
and maximises storage in your vanity cabinet. But they can be a bit tricky to clean around and require a standard bench depth of at least 460mm. Not so with an undermounted basin, says Liam. “They allow you to wipe surface water straight into the basin and create more countertop space,” he says. “Use a licensed tradesperson when installing one, as the cut in your benchtop can only be made once, and complete waterproofing around the edges is imperative.” Space is also a deciding factor with taps. Wall-mounted tapware will save bench space, but needs to be plumbed through the wall. Bench-mounted tapware can be easier to install, yet takes up room and can be harder to clean around. ¿

A classic colour scheme has given this DIY kitchen rebuild style on a budget

ransforming the haphazard kitchen of a Nelson home posed plenty of challenges for renovators Alice and Caleb Pearson of Pearson + Projects (pearsonandprojects.com). The kitchen was the last remaining element of their ninth full house renovation, and was located in an extension at the rear of the house. “The extension was like a lean-to on a lean-to,” says Alice. However, as Alice has found, spaces that present as the biggest problem often end up inspiring the most creative results. “Renovations are all
about problem solving. So the more challenging it is, the harder you work to find the best solution, which can equate to the best results,” she says. “Normally the spaces that nearly put us off buying a house end up being the hero areas for me. This kitchen was completely that kind of case.” Alice and Caleb had already decided on a Bunnings DIY Kaboodle kitchen, and found their 3D design kitchen planner invaluable. “It’s such a cool way to design. It’s really great for planning your layout and for colour choices too,” says Alice.

Black appliances blend almost seamlessly with the cabinetry

Before
Paint it black and white Before demolition of the kitchen, a new ceiling beam was installed and the window height raised so the cabinetry could be placed underneath it. Black appliances and a chrome tap over a dark granite sink – a subtle reflection of the black flatpack cabinetry – were installed, creating a neat contrast with the white tiles and shutters, with bamboo touches adding warmth. A light-hued laminate vinyl was used for the flooring. “The kitchen itself is quite striking, so we didn’t add much in terms of dressing it,” says Alice. }

Update it PRO TIP
Designing and installing the kitchen themselves meant Alice and Caleb could create a floor plan that worked for the kitchen’s unique space Kitchen cohesion The tongue-and-groove detailing on the bench seat, plus the Alpine profile and mushroom handles on the cabinetry frontage, give the kitchen a Shaker-style ambience, lending character to the space.
Use a clear hard wax oil to protect the surface of the benchtop, preserve the look of the timber and give it a nice finish
Boost your booth After playing around with designs, Alice and Caleb decided to position part of the kitchen’s base cabinetry along the top of the step leading down to the dining room. The rear of that cabinetry then became the back of the long booth seat. Caleb used a router to create tongue-andgroove detailing on the MDF panel for the back of the booth – which, he says, was an affordable and easily achievable effect.

hen you’re embarking on a kitchen renovation or whole new build, flooring is one of the most important decisions you’ll face. While there’s an abundance of options, not every material will be adequately suited to the high-impact demands of the kitchen. As it’s the hub of your home, the floor must be able to withstand daily wear and tear, heavy foot traffic, dropped dishes and spills. It also needs to look good and complement the style of your home. To help you decide, here are a few of the most popular options.

Solid timber Anyone with old timber floors in their home understands what a joy they can be. “Timber’s a softer option than concrete or porcelain tiles,” says Auckland-based interior designer Lucy Sargent of Pocketspace Interiors (pocketspaceinteriors.co.nz). This quality makes them prone to signs of wear, but they can be sanded back to give you a brand-new surface when needed. “Timber floors need to be re-oiled or sanded and refinished intermittently to keep them looking their best,” says Lizzi Whaley of Spaceworks Design Group (spaceworks. co.nz). To keep your floors in good nick, use a good-quality floor sealant. Choose a matt finish over gloss, as it’s better for hiding scratches and dust, and wipe up spills speedily to avoid moisture damaging the boards. Also, consider extra protection with a rug. Polypropylene outdoor rugs are a good choice, as they can be hosed off outside whenever they get a bit grubby.

Large-format tiles in slate grey form a durable and on-trend flooring option in a modern home

Tiles Tiles can withstand all kinds of spills and are naturally sterile, as they don’t absorb odours or bacteria. The main downside is that standing on them for long periods can be tough going on your legs and back, but it could be a case of a little pain for a lot of gain. “Ceramic tiles can add vibrancy and dynamism that you can’t get from any other material,” says Lizzi. Installing tiles is a relatively easy project for confident DIYers if you have an even, level surface – and, once down, can last forever. The grout between the tiles is the only weak point, so it’s important to use the right products to seal the grout lines.
“Timber floors are a great choice for kitchens, especially openplan ones. You can easily use the same flooring from the kitchen through to the dining and living areas, which isn’t easy to do with all materials” Lizzi Whaley Spaceworks Design Group

Because laminate is formed from moisture-resistant layers around a core of high-density fibreboard, it is a practical application too. It’s a good choice for busy homes because it’s also easy to clean. “You can use almost any cleaning product without worrying about discolouration or scratching,” says Lucy.
Watch it!
Laminate “Laminate flooring is a great alternative to vinyl,” says Lucy. “It has a more sophisticated feel as well as a more authentic look.” Just take care when choosing. “Depending on the quality of laminate you buy, there may not be a high pattern variation, compared to the high variation in tone, texture and pattern of real timber,” explains Lucy.

Vinyl Wonderfully durable as well as low maintenance, vinyl comes in a huge range of styles, mimicking the look of stone, concrete, timber and distressed timber, so you can choose what will suit the style of your home. “There are some good timber-look vinyl planks that tick budget and aesthetic boxes,” says Lizzi. “It’s just a case of being sure it’s in keeping with other surrounding materials and specifications.” Vinyl also has great sound absorption qualities, is safer for children (softer falls!) and is easy to clean. “It can be used on myriad floor substrates,” says Lizzi. “It’s also cost-effective and fast to install, with much less wastage, and it’s easy to clean and maintain.” Perhaps best of all, laying vinyl planks and tiles can be a straightforward DIY option if you have a sound, clean and level floor. “Its extremely thin profile means it can be applied over existing flooring, which is a huge cost saver,” says Lucy. “It’s also very quiet underfoot – no problem with clacking heels.” ¿

Brighten a dark path with white-flowering border plants and lightleaved clumping grasses
Delphiniums Tall elegant spikes with two or three flushes per season (from mid-October through to June), peaking in December. In warmer areas, another flush of flowers often appears mid-June. Delphiniums last longer in cooler regions. Strawflower (Bracteantha) Look for the perennial type that blooms from spring to autumn. Once picked and dried, the flowers last forever. Dipladenia (Mandevilla) ‘Jade White’ A small, prolific flowering perennial with evergreen leaves. Flowers for months. Frost tender. Baby’s breath (Gypsophila elegans) A hardy, easy-togrow annual and a great filler. Likes the sun.
Bring white flowers into your home – they make excellent cut flowers
Getting started “The trick to creating a stunning white garden is to select plants that will give
you interest throughout the year, not just for one season,” says Dee. “It’s also important to think about the form and shape of the various plants as these become more obvious when working within a monochromatic colour palette.” Viburnum bushes with billowing white flower bunches, arranged near elegant and statuesque calla lilies, create variety and allow both to stand out distinctly. Tall, puffball-shaped agapanthus flowers catch the eye, while shorter, sophisticated white petunias provide warmth and cohesion. “Choose different flower forms to provide texture and interest but place them carefully for maximum impact,” says Chris Prebble of Mosaic Design (mosaicdesign.nz). “For example, smaller growing mophead hydrangeas at the front of a garden border work well against the spires of Digitalis (foxgloves) behind, set against a dark green hedge or black fence.” Shades of white The many shades of white available become apparent when planted side by side. Few flowers are solid white, the majority having a hint of another colour, or a yellow, green, brown or black centre. This can be used to your advantage. An overabundance of pure white plants can }

his season is one of the best times of year to plant. In autumn, the soil is still warm, but the weather is cooler and generally wetter, helping plants to settle in nicely before the onset of winter. If you’re planning a new garden or even just looking to update an established space, consider a white garden as your starting point. It has a universal appeal, easily lending itself to traditional, modern or cottage garden-style plantings. “The simplicity of white gardens makes them very restful,” says Dee McQuillan, owner of Ivy & Bloom (ivyandbloom.co.nz) “They’re also a clever way to make a small garden feel larger.” Often called a moon garden, its white flowers also stand out at night like a glowing beacon.
Hebe odora A hardy New Zealand native with small buxus-like leaves and a rounded habit. Showy white flowers in summer.
Agapanthus ‘Seafoam’ A semi-dwarf variety. Easy to grow, long flowering and hardy. Can be semideciduous in cool areas. White iceberg rose Comes in bush, standard or climbing forms to suit all garden situations. Flowers over many months and is disease resistant.

ear (Stachys byzantina) also add good contrast. “Silver foliage groundcovers such as snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum), silverbush (Convolvulus cneorum) and rose campion (Lychnis coronaria) work beautifully in a white garden as they provide year-round foliage contrast when not in flower,” says Chris. Include white variegated plants for even more juxtaposition in the garden.
give the garden an unflattering glare. “Too much white can be stark, so using plants with grey, silver or lime green foliage will soften the look while still emphasising the theme,” says Dee McQuillan. Also, “Don’t shy away from whites that have creamy yellow or blush undertones as this adds depth and interest to the flowers,” adds Chris Prebble. Foliage accents Use a flower’s small differences and include other plants in the garden that highlight these attributes. For example, silver foliage is eye-catching when paired with cool white flowers. The frilly foliage of artemisia and the soft fuzziness of lamb’s bunnings.co.nz |

PRO TIP “Guide your dinner guests to your front door by planting scented white flowers, such as gardenias or daphne (Daphne odora 'Alba'), which will glow in the evening light, along the edges of your pathway and in containers on either side of the door” Chris Prebble Mosaic Design
Pot luck Including planters creates an additional layer of contrast. Old washtubs and plain terracotta pots add dimension without stealing attention away from the white palette. “Add in some accessories to finish the look – a beautiful garden bench, perhaps, or some feature pots with pretty white annuals,” says Dee. Any hardscaping design choices, such as gravel walkways or stone paths, should blend into the space and allow the white flowers to stand out. Light-coloured options are best, but not white, as that will give the garden a washed-out appearance. Dark-coloured pergolas or outdoor furniture are fine, but should be used sparingly as they can draw attention away from the palette as the garden’s focal point. If there’s brick or wood nearby, these can look great incorporated into a white palette. If the background doesn’t fit with the design, draw attention away from it. Planting tall, frilly white irises nearby, for example, can draw the eye away and maintain the focus on the garden itself. Alternatively, use paint. “If you’re planting against a fence backdrop, you could either paint the fence black for a dramatic look that makes the plants pop, or a blue-toned grey for a softer, more romantic look,” suggests Dee. ¿

Add height and structure “Use a feature tree for height with some structural planting such as hedges, shrubs or topiary that will hold their shape year round,” says Dee. “Then use seasonal flowering plants – spring bulbs, summer annuals, etc – as the filler to create that wow factor across the seasons. Climbing plants add vertical interest and make the garden planting seem full and abundant.”

Fix it Winter-proof outdoors
K
iwis enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, which means our decks cop a lot of scuffing and staining from barbecues, pets and children, and anything else we can throw at them. While most of us are aware that decks need to be protected against harsh summers, weather can be just as damaging in winter. “Timber decks often grow mould in damp areas,” says Glen Ellis, managing director of The Decking Specialist (thedeckingspecialist.co.nz). “You should wash yours down twice a year and spray it with a mould-killer to avoid rotting.” But oiling timber decks after cleaning them is just as important, says Dan Mackay, director of Ministry of Ground (ministryofground.co.nz). “You should oil pine decks every year and hardwood decks every two years, to seal the timber and add longevity,” he says. Clear the decks Start by removing everything off the deck – furniture, pot plants and so on – and thoroughly inspect the area. Look for lifted nails, damaged and sagging boards, and loose handrails, and make any repairs necessary. Next use a soft broom to sweep up dirt and leaves, including those that are stuck between boards. Sanding is not always essential, but will result in a smoother finish. If you decide to go down this route, use a belt sander, running with the grain of the timber, then use a detail sander to sand into the gaps between the boards. Sweep again to get rid of the dust. Use tarps to
Words Louise Tigchelaar Photography iStock. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings
PRO TIP Grease stains from barbecues are very difficult to get out of decking. Keep a grease catcher under your barbecue and be extra mindful when cleaning it – consider laying down a tarp as a precaution
cover items stored underneath the deck (or remove them entirely) and use more tarps to protect any plants alongside. Scrub a dub Now it’s time to get scrubbing. “You need to make sure your deck is clean and dry, without any dust or dirt remaining on it,” says Dan. “Otherwise, your deck oil will just lock the dirt in.” For a seriously grubby deck, a pressure washer is incredibly effective. “I like to water blast the deck a day before oiling and cordon off any foot traffic,” says Dan. First test it on an inconspicuous area. Don’t turn the pressure up too high or hold the nozzle too close to the timber, as it can damage the surface and even split the wood. Then use an approved cleaning detergent, such as Cabot’s Deck Clean.
Protective duty Now your deck is looking clean and fresh, you need to apply a protective coating. “Timber decks can really suffer from expansion and contraction caused by the weather,” says Glen Ellis, who also recommends leaving ‘expansion gaps’ when building a new timber deck. Applying oil or a stain will protect it and keep it looking good. The oil or stain chosen depends on the effect you want to achieve; oil enhances the timber’s natural colour, while a stain allows you to change the hue – great for functional but uninspiring timbers such as pine. To apply the oil or stain, use a woodcare brush to cut in around the edges of the deck and along the gaps between the boards. Use a lambswool applicator for the upper surface of the deck. Allow it to dry completely before applying a second coat – add an optional third coat if the deck is exposed to the elements. Leave to dry for a day or two before replacing furniture. Keep it clean Ultimately, keeping your deck clean throughout the year is the key to its longevity. Use a soft broom regularly, which will stop small particles of dirt and dust from building up and creating a bigger problem down the track. ¿ Beyond timber decking
Use a water blaster to clean a deck the day before applying deck oil
Mix it in a bucket, according to the instructions, and use a hard-bristled broom or decking brush to scrub it clean, paying particular attention to patches of mould or moss. Leave for 15 minutes and then rinse off with the hose, or a pressure washer if you’re using one. Allow it to dry completely before applying a protective oil or stain.
Modular decks Modular timber decks are simply pre-assembled decking sections, which make installing and repairing a deck easier and quicker. They are still made from timber and need the same maintenance as a traditional timber deck. Composite decking This type is a combination of particles of timber and plastic. It is less likely to rot, splinter, warp or decay than traditional timber, has a longer life expectancy and does not need regular oiling, staining, sealing or painting. It’s important that it is left clear of organic matter as well as any pooling water – both can leave marks.

Want to maximise your yard? Here’s our guide to planning the perfect patio, a place where you can kick back in style
K
iwis love the outdoors, so a patio often tops our home wish lists. Planning is key, says landscape designer Karen Wealleans of Changing Spaces (changingspaces.co.nz). “There’s no one size fits all when it comes to patios,” she says. “You need to assess what it will be used for and who will use it.” Patio goals Is your new patio going to be an entertaining destination needing an undercover barbecue or outdoor kitchen? Or do you simply need a shady spot, or a chill-out zone? Once you’re clear
on your purpose, you can think about size and location and whether you need to add a roof to create an all-weather area. Location, location If you want to use your patio on a daily basis, especially for dining, easy access is important, says Kerry Speirs, lead designer at Second Nature (secondnature.co.nz). “The closer to the house your patio is, the more use it will get,” she says. “Positioning it close to a main living area or kitchen is usually the best place.” But, if you have the budget to build more than one patio,
try mixing things up. “It’s a good idea to create quite a different user experience for each patio, or you won’t bother to venture beyond the closest one,” says Kerry. “For example, if you have a sunny dining space directly outside the kitchen, a second patio at the end of the garden would be better developed as a shady retreat space to relax with a book or capture the last of the evening sun.” Sun capture aside, when determining your patio site, Kerry advises checking local planning rules. “Make sure it won’t infringe on yard }

PRO TIP If you have the budget, enhance a covered patio with inclusions such as lighting, strip heaters, fans and sound systems; all must be designed for outdoor use and fitted by a licensed tradesperson setbacks and ensure pergola posts aren’t placed within the main outlook spaces of the living room and bedrooms,” she says. “If it adjoins the house you should also consider how it will affect the natural light. Consider using an overhead system that allows flexibility such as a louvred roof or a retractable awning that can allow light into the space when it’s wanted.” Look at the layout Plan what’s going in the patio zone before you choose any furnishings. If it’s for dining and entertaining, factor in outdoor lounging furniture along with a dining table and chairs, which require comfortable clearance (60cm to 90cm) to slide in and out. If a barbecue is part of the plan, allow reasonable space around it to grill safely. Also think about how guests will enter, move around and leave the space. Keep in mind, too, that symmetrical settings feel formal, while asymmetrical arrangements create a more relaxed, casual environment. As a first step, draw up the floor plan on paper. Once it feels right, create the set-up with linemarking spray paint to double check furniture placement and traffic flow.
Get the look Ideally, the patio should complement the style of your home and landscaping, so choose materials accordingly. “Treated pine is cheaper than exotic hardwoods, which often don’t come from a sustainable source,” explains Karen Wealleans. “Paving laid on a sand base is less expensive than pavers laid on a mortar base. Laying pavers is also generally cheaper than laying tiles because of the labour involved in the latter.” Most patios sit flush with the lawn, or a step or two up. Take style cues for flooring from your home and hard landscaping. Honed concrete can form a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, timber flooring will add warmth, while pavers interspersed with mondo or lawn grass help to soften the look and feel of hard surfaces. If the patio is located away from the house, the use of similar materials and colours to the main building will also help to link it visually. ¿

For task lighting, place smart LED strip lights under a wall cabinet, around an office space or wherever extra light is needed, then adjust colour and brightness with a smart phone app. ◆

Hole in one
Patching a plaster wall is a simple job that’s incredibly satisfying to DIY How to repair
A SMALL HOLE
This method is best for a hole up to 20mm, the sort that might be made by a picture hook. Handy kits, such as the Monarch Mini ‘Fill Sand Go’, have everything you need for small quick fixes (or just use some filler and a spatula!) – simply add a small brush and paint in the same colour as your wall.
1
Use 120-grit abrasive paper to sand over the hole (kits have this and everything else you need). Gently run your hand over the hole to check the edges don’t protrude. Sand again if necessary, then wipe with a cloth to remove dust.
Safety tip: Before drilling or cutting into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring and pipework, and turn off the power while working bunnings.co.nz |

2
Scoop up a pea-size amount of filler with a spatula (or supplied applicator). Hold the applicator at a 45˚ angle to smooth over the hole, then hold it at 90˚to scrape away the excess. Leave to dry for about half an hour.

W
hether it’s smoothing out a small ding before painting or patching a larger hole to get your rental bond back, repairing damaged plasterboard is a life skill worth having. The size of the hole will determine how you tackle the task and the products you should use to achieve the most seamless result. Before you start, keep in mind that gypsum plaster is crumbly and dusty, so cover the surrounding area with a drop cloth and always wear safety gear, including a dust mask and eye protection.

How to repair
A MEDIUM HOLE
This is best for a hole of around 30-50mm, which might have been made by a door handle or similar. You’ll need a utility knife, 120-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block, self-adhesive fibreglass mesh tape, Selleys ‘Spakfilla Rapid’, a mini roller with tray, and paint in the same colour as your wall.

Use a utility knife to carefully trim around the edges of the hole to remove any torn paper or flaky debris, then smooth over the hole with a sanding block wrapped in 120-grit abrasive paper. Use a cloth to wipe away the dust.
Use abrasive paper with a sanding block to sand over the filled area in a circular motion, smoothing over the edges and onto the surrounding wall. Wipe away any dust with a cloth.
Cut a piece of self-adhesive fibreglass mesh tape to fit over the hole, ensuring there is excess to adhere to the wall, applying two pieces if necessary. Centre the tape over the hole and press it onto the wall.
Reapply filler over the area using a wiping motion from opposite directions, extending the coverage onto the wall by about 20mm around the area. Leave to dry thoroughly, then sand and wipe away dust.
Push filler into the mesh with the supplied spatula in a wiping motion from opposite directions, spreading it onto the surrounding wall 20mm past the tape. Scrape over the area to remove excess. Leave to dry for at least half an hour.
Pour a small amount of paint into a tray and use the top section of the tray to roll out the paint and remove excess, then roll over the repaired wall area, feathering the edges. Leave to dry then repeat, applying two or three coats.

A BIG HOLE
This is for a hole up to 120mm, around the size of a light switch. You’ll need a plasterboard handy panel, a utility knife, a small plasterboard saw, GIB ‘RediFilla’ plasterboard repair compound, a broad or putty knife and fibreglass mesh tape. You can spot-patch over the repair with same-colour wall paint using a mini roller, but it’s better to use a full-size roller to refresh the entire wall.
1
2
Make a filler piece from the plasterboard handy panel, marking it to slightly larger than the hole. Score along the marks with a utility knife, using another panel as a straight edge. Hold it with both hands to snap the edges. Centre the filler piece over the hole and mark around it with a pen.
Check there is no obstructing plumbing or wiring. Use a plasterboard saw to cut into the corners diagonally. Score around the mark with a utility knife and push excess into wall. Trim the edges – hold the knife with the handle angled slightly out so the blade leaves a bevelled edge, allowing for more plaster.
3
From the remaining plasterboard handy panel, score and snap two backing pieces the width of the cavity and double the height.

Apply plasterboard repair compound around the front face of a backing piece, position it through the cavity, with the face against the wall to cover about a third of the cavity, push from the back and hold it onto the wall for 30 seconds. Repeat with the remaining piece. Leave to dry for at least an hour.
5
Apply compound over the filler piece, then position it to cover the backing pieces, wiping away any excess and leaving to dry for about an hour. Tip: Replace the lid on the ready-mixed compound between applications to keep it fresh and prevent it from drying out between applications.

ou’ve chosen your colour swatches, played with sample pots and the brushes and rollers are ready to go. Diving into the paint department can be quite daunting for the uninitiated, so here are some top tips from the experts to help you pick the right paint for the job. Base camp The majority of paint finishes are water-based, often also called acrylic paints. This means you can use water to dilute the paint (for example, if using a paint sprayer) and to wash out brushes and rollers. Oil-based paints (also called solvent-based) take longer to dry and give off a stronger smell, due to their higher VOC (volatile organic compound, see opposite bunnings.co.nz |

page for more) content. You will need mineral turpentine or a similar appropriate thinner to clean your brushes. Water-based enamels are much more popular than solvent-based ones, according to the team at Dulux NZ. “Water-based enamels are generally more environmentally friendly, non-yellowing, have almost no odour, are low VOC and you can use them to re-coat faster than a solvent-based enamel,” says Dulux NZ’s technical manager, Heather Goode. “You can also use these enamels on your exterior doors, windows and trims.” Lustre for life Paints are available in a range of sheen levels, from high gloss and satin, to semi-gloss,

low sheen and a flat or matte finish. “A paint’s sheen is made by adding certain minerals, which impart a soft sheen level and create the desired finish, with different minerals added to affect a paint’s appearance,” explains Heather. Gloss enamel paint is often preferred for timber trims such as skirting, window frames and architraves. Semi-gloss water-based paint is a popular option for walls, while ceilings are usually painted in a matte or flat formulation, which helps to disperse light more evenly and make any surface imperfections, such as joints between plasterboard sheets, less noticeable. For an ultra-matte look, chalk paint – such as Dulux Design Chalk Effect or Rust-Oleum

What are VOCs?
Paints have traditionally been a major source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs): carbon-based chemicals such as acetone, benzene and formaldehyde that evaporate at room temperature, releasing odour and impacting air quality. The odour often associated with a recently painted room or renovated home is due to VOCs emanating from paint or the materials used. These odours diffuse over time and disperse into the outdoors. The good news is that lower-VOC paints, such as PPG Paints Ultimate Enamel and Dulux Wash&Wear, are now readily available. This means it’s possible for families to use a freshly painted room faster and reduce their exposure to these chemicals – great for those with chemical sensitivities. to clean and creating a sleek, smooth finish. “The lack of minerals in higher sheen paints means they tend to have better washability,” adds Heather. Advances in technology have made it possible to choose a lower sheen level for a more modern look, while staying easy to clean. “Dulux Wash&Wear Matt is formulated to form an extremely tough surface and after the first week it becomes even more durable,” Heather
PRO TIP The easiest way to paint a door is to remove it from its hinges, mask off the handles and place it on a set of sawhorses
explains. “It is also resistant to many common stains.” Trim and neat Timber trim around your home, including skirting boards and architraves, is often subject to more wear and tear than walls. It’s wise to use a hard-wearing enamel paint for these bits. “These areas are high foot-traffic parts of the home, so they’re prone to bumps and scrapes, making it important to
choose the right product for the job,” says Kelly Magee, senior brand manager for British Paints. Products such as British Paints Paint & Prime Doors Windows & Trims give an ultra-smooth look that should stand the test of time. While generally not as tough or as glossy as oil-based paint, water-based enamel is another good option for trims. Doors also tend to cop some abuse, so a tough enamel paint is a sound choice. Outdoor types For weatherboards and similar exterior surfaces, choose a paint formulated to tolerate the harsh New Zealand sun, such as PPG Paints Suntuf or Dulux Weathershield, both of which are water-based exterior paints that can be applied directly to most surfaces without needing a coat of primer first. Good exterior paints offer protection from UV light and resistance to dirt and mould, and even the salty air of a seaside setting. ◆
