ANDREA LUCENA-ORR
Dulux Colour Specialist
Refreshing your home can create not only a completely new look, but it can also change the emotive connection in different spaces. Adding your ‘touch’ when it comes to colour can really personalise your home and make it feel like your own sanctuary.
Andrea is an industry-recognised colour expert and trend forecaster who presents her colour trend findings to the media, trade, and retail markets.
This transformation can be as simple as painting your living room or bedroom. Sometimes it can also be choosing that perfect white, neutral or pop of colour that helps update your home instantly.
Colour choice should always be based on the outcome you are trying to achieve. Think about the overall ambience you would like to create (eg. do you want your room to feel calm, relaxed, formal or dramatic). And, review those in-between spaces, such as corridors and circulation spaces between rooms, which are sometimes overlooked. These areas can act as transition spaces and can add delight, linking these spaces in the home.
The best just got better.

Welcome
Fair weather and climbing energy levels combine to make spring a season for action. Nature is busy doing her thing, and it’s impossible not to feel inspired by the beauty that abounds at this time of year. Whether you’re itching to fill vases, pots or flowerbeds with blooms, or give your lawn some love, this issue will soon have you springing into gear. We’ve unearthed 25 ways to ease you into the season, outlined what you need to reset or start a vegetable garden and dreamt up DIY projects to help make the most of outdoor spaces. There’s a cute hanging basket hack (page 96) with sun and shade-loving plants to fill them; a modular planter seat (page 92), and a space-saving vertical vegie garden fit for a balcony or backyard (page 94).
If you’ve been doubting your DIY capabilities, check out the handiwork displayed from page 31 and think again. The calibre of entries in this year’s Search for Australia’s Best DIY Projects is amazing... Bunnings customers have shown yet again that they can create pretty much anything they set their minds to, backed up by expert advice at store level and encouragement from the wider DIY community. Congratulations to everyone who entered, and to those who made the final cut. We are so inspired by your efforts. Have a wonderful September!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE
One step at a time
This September, you can help homeless pets find their best friends by joining PetRescue’s Best Friends’ Walk fundraiser! The monthlong fitness and fundraising challenge raises vital funds for PetRescue’s adoption platform, which brings rescue pets face to face with thousands of potential adopters each day, giving them the best chance to find a home. Set a fundraising goal, choose a distance to walk with your best friend (furry or human) over the month of September, and get moving for a great cause! Visit bestfriendswalk. com.au for more information and to register.
COMMUNITY NEWS Bunnings birthday!
Walter, a frequent visitor to Bunnings, recently celebrated his 80th birthday with a Bunnings cake, DIYed by his grandchildren. His wife Joan said there was no problem choosing presents for Walter’s birthday – Bunnings gift cards, as always! Their family now has three generations of DIYers and Bunnings customers, plus a grandson on the team at the Woodville, SA, store.
The unpredictable weather that can come with the change of seasons spells trouble for leather (or vegan leather) shoes. To protect them – and stop your socks from getting damp – use beeswax for a waterproof finish. Safely melt beeswax using a double boiler on the stove. Dip the corner of a clean cotton cloth into the wax and apply evenly over a clean shoe. Use a hair dryer to carefully heat wax that’s on the shoe, buffing with the cloth as you go. Continue until you have worked over the entire shoe, then repeat with the other shoe.

IN THE GARDEN September
Say hello to spring with potted cheer, then sow, fertilise and prune ahead of the warm season
Welcome spring with a statement pot by the front door. Choose a decorative pot at least 50cm wide, fill with potting mix and plant up using the ‘thriller, filler, spiller’ method: a tall perennial in the centre surrounded by some complementary shorter plants and trailing greenery on the outside. Try spikes of angelonia, petunias (above) and sweet potato vine.
Sow spring/summer herbs and vegies such as basil, beans, cucumber, eggplant, parsley, pumpkin, sweet corn, tomato and zucchini. Prepare garden beds with organic matter like compost or pelletised chicken manure, and fertilise regularly for a bumper crop.
Spread fertiliser around the bases of roses (below) and fruit trees, as well as ornamental trees and shrubs, to boost spring growth. Follow with a layer of mulch to help suppress weeds and conserve moisture.
Once the chance of frost has passed, prune winter-damaged leaves from shrubs and perennials so fresh growth can come through. Check for signs of pests or disease and treat as needed.
Loosen soil surface with a hand cultivator when applying granular fertiliser
After applying fertiliser near edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, read the label, follow instructions and wear gloves, a mask and protective gear. Always store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Silverbeet
Needs room to grow, so plant in large individual pots or give it a dedicated growing space in the garden. Ideal for soups, stir-fries and salads.
Rocket
Use these peppery and slightly bitter leaves in salads and sandwiches, or as a garnish. Grow in pots or garden beds and pick regularly.
Spinach

CLEANING HACK Cut the mess
Keep wooden chopping boards clean and hygienic with a simple scrub straight from your pantry. Sprinkle the board with coarse salt before scrubbing with the cut side of a halved lemon. The acid from the lemon disinfects and neutralises odours, while the gritty salt helps get out even the toughest stains. Rinse with water before drying well and putting away.

IN MY TROLLEY
Courtney, NSW,
WALKS US DOWN THE AISLE
Bunnings caters to all sorts of creative pursuits, as Sydney-based artist Courtney can attest. She takes advantage of the in-store cutting service to make sure her paintings turn out just right. “I use plywood to make my own panels for my artworks,” she says. “It’s a sturdier, more cost-effective alternative to large-scale stretched canvases, and the Bunnings team members cut it to size for me.”

Seek out new plants to brighten up garden beds and containers, reimagine your alfresco living spaces, and try your hand at DIY projects. NATURE POST
Craft a multi-function focal point for the garden or a balcony – to attract birds and insects, support a climbing plant and even provide lamplight at night. Using a 1.8m treated pine post (or have a 2.4m post cut in store), wrap rot-resistant rope around the centre, securing with high-strength exterior adhesive and galvanised nails at the ends. Enlist a second pair of hands to position the post in the centre of a large garden pot and add quick-set concrete halfway up the pot to hold the post in place – make sure you follow the manufacturer’s safety advice and instructions. Spray-paint a lantern topper with 2-in-1 paint and primer. Once the concrete is set, fix the painted lantern to the top of the post with adhesive and insert a puck light suitable for outdoor use. Next, fix brackets to the sides of the pole at different heights with galvanised screws, and hang your accessories. Place potted colour, including a vine, around the base. See below for the materials we used.

Grow the best tasting heirloom tomatoes in Australia
Judged by a panel of chefs, gardeners and Diggers Club members, discover the flavour of our award-winning tomatoes.
Diggers tips for tomato growing succe
1.Tomatoes thrive in warm weather. Plant seedlings into the garden after all likelihood of frost has passed.
2.Long or leggy tomato seedlings can be planted deeply to improve plant performance. A large healthy root system will develop from the stem.
3.Tomatoes need an open sunny position with plenty of air circulation to thrive.
4. Water the roots and not the leaves for healthy plants with less chance of fungal infections. Remove the lowest leaves once your tomato plant establishes to minimise disease.
5. Stake at planting and tie regularly to maintain a tidy plant for better health and easy harvest.
6.Pinch the top growth from the main leader after the first flowers appear and water regularly throughout the growing season.

“Don’t be scared to give things a go! Furniture flipping is a great way to modernise old pieces and the creative process is a lot of fun”
BEST UPCYCLING MAKEOVER
While there are plenty of ways to upcycle furniture, sometimes the best option is to just let the timber sing. The original reddish stain on this console table was a bit of a dated look, but Sara could see the beauty beneath. “My vision for this piece was to reveal the natural timber and create a fresh coastal feel,” she says. An orbital sander, with 120- to 400-grit sanding pads, was used to show the gorgeous timber and give a silky smooth finish. Sara used a light paint wash (in Dulux Colorbond Evening Haze) to keep the timber from yellowing, before applying Cabot’s Stain & Varnish. Wooden dowel was used to create new handles. “The light stain was perfect for achieving this coastal look and the dowel handles completed the piece perfectly. I’m so happy with the result!”

“Research! We have watched endless YouTube videos and countless renovation programs. We get lots of information from the Bunnings Warehouse magazines and ask plenty of questions!”
BEST KITCHEN MAKEOVER
We love a good kitchen reno and this one’s a doozy! Donna and Glenn had a large room to work with, but the existing kitchen was a poky wee thing, crammed into the corner. Determined to create their dream room on a budget, they sourced an old kitchen on Facebook Marketplace, deconstructing it and reconfiguring the cabinets to suit their space. “Our vibe is industrial/ country (a genre we have possibly made up),” says Donna. “But we love rustic feels, different timbers and metals, and bringing it all together to give a warm, inviting and homely feel.” New windows send light streaming into the space and form a splashback with a view over sink and stove. The cupboards were painted in Dulux Black Caviar, with contrasting timber cabinets and oak laminate benchtops, plus the hero piece: a custom-made butcher’s block. The result is divine, as warm and welcoming as a hot cuppa and a freshly baked bickie.
“Love this design and the new genre of industrial/country! Repurposing the old cabinetry with a lick of paint has had a huge impact“

TOP DIY TIP
“Everything is ‘figure-out-able’. Improvise with the materials and resources you have – with some patience and dedication, you’ll be amazed at what you can do!”
BEST LAUNDRY MAKEOVER
Nearly 100 years old, uninsulated from the elements and festooned with creepy crawlies, Olimpia and Charlie’s detached laundry certainly didn’t make household chores more appealing! After ripping everything out, the couple added cosiness with wall insulation, relining the whole room with plasterboard sheets. “Our main focus was to maximise storage space and turn an impractical layout into a fully functioning laundry,” says Olimpia. They did this by amping up the storage with flatpack cupboards and a clever mezzanine addition. The original cement trough was kept as a functional feature and a charming nod to the laundry’s past, but a detachable timber bench doubles the workspace when the sink isn’t needed. Olimpia then styled the room with useful and decorative touches to create a charming chore space.
“The transformation to a stylish, highly functional and inviting space shows remarkable teamwork and creativity“

BEST SMALL PROJECT
Like the first coffee of the morning, this DIY project is designed to deliver a little spark of daily joy. “Over the past few years, my passion for colour has been reignited and adding it to our home became a non-negotiable,” says Kirsty. “I wanted to add a little further happiness into our coffee station.” First, she replaced the broken original shelving in this kitchen corner with Flexi Storage floating shelves. Porta ‘Cirque’ lining boards were chosen for depth and interest, painted in Dulux Herbalist. This deceptively simple project demonstrates the value of taking one’s time. “I definitely learnt that measuring twice or three times was needed,” says Kirsty.

BEST COMMUNITY PROJECT
Spying some spare land at his retirement village, Don saw an opportunity to give other residents a chance to flex their green thumbs again, and to provide the community with fresh food. “I’ve always been involved with gardening, from a teenager at agricultural school,” says Don. His recipe for success is simple: “Good soil, plant what you like and use.” Don grows a huge range of seasonal produce, planted in premium potting mix and fed fortnightly with Yates Thrive. Residents can lend a hand and help themselves to fresh veg, with an honesty box collecting funds for improvements, such as the new irrigation system.

Wayne, Vic
TOP DIY TIP
“Do your research and enlist the services of a draftsperson who can advise on the legal building requirements of converting a non-living space”
BEST OUTDOOR PROJECT
First impressions count, but Wayne’s home didn’t put its best face forward – in fact, the main entry was hidden at the back, up a flight of stairs! A seasoned DIYer, Wayne came up with a shrewd solution, sacrificing the home’s single garage to create an elegant entrance. This project needed council approval as a first step, then Wayne got stuck in. The roller door was removed and replaced with a custom door and adjacent window. This offers a glimpse of the new entry hall behind, which he designed with a timber slat feature wall, Dulux ‘Light Texture’ paint and a backlit feature mirror. Framing the door, Wayne rendered the old 70s brick and installed panels of feature stone tiles. A new timber walkway, fringed by succulents and grasses, guides guests to the front door, so Wayne will never miss a delivery!
“This is fantastic –it’s so creative! The stonework, lighting, deck, new paint and the plants all make a beautiful, modern and inviting entrance“

BEST PAINT PROJECT
Storage is always welcome, but the built-in timber shelving unit in Ellen’s new home was not only dated but a clutter magnet. Worse, the mirrored back only served to magnify the mess! Where some might see a problem, Ellen saw an opportunity. “I was trying to modernise the shelving and put my own personal touch on what was a very white and neutral home,” she says of the decision to paint it all –including the mirrors – a rich green (Taubmans Dark Green Velvet). An extra-strength primer was the first crucial step. “I learnt all about the

different types of primers which I needed specifically to cover the mirrors,” says Ellen. Four coats of paint were then layered to get the perfect smooth finish. Finally, Ellen added a VidaXL cabinet – which she’d also sanded, primed and painted – for out-of-sight storage, making the finished unit as functional as it is elegant and modern. ●

The plant whisperer
Put your green thumbs up! The new smart sensor from Plant with Willow can help everyone become master gardeners by showing what house plants need for good health
Persistently droopy and sad indoor plants are a frustrating and expensive problem. If only your greenery could somehow tell you what it needs… enter Plant with Willow. This smart sensor takes the guesswork out of indoor gardening, using technology to tell you in real time what your plants require to thrive.
How it works
So how does this source of insider information work?
Once placed in your indoor pots, the Willow smart sensor measures the essential elements for a healthy plant: soil moisture, light exposure, room temperature and humidity. Each sensor pairs with the Willow hub, which can connect to a veritable jungle of up to 40 sensors, and updates your plants’ happiness score throughout the day via the Willow app.
A voice for plants
Information is power. Willow goes one step further by giving your plants the ability to speak for themselves and tell you exactly what they need to be happy. Soil getting a little dry? Temperature creeping up –or down – past comfortable? Willow will send your phone alerts to advise when your plants need attention, and what it is they require. Ontime TLC means no more stressed and wilting plant babies. You can also use the Willow app to quickly check on every plant’s wellbeing. With a rolling plant happiness score for every one of your charges, who says it’s not easy being green?
Bespoke care
Willow understands that different types of plants have varying needs. And for every virtually indestructible
plant, there’s a delicate green Goldilocks that needs everything to be just right (we’re looking at you, ferns). That’s why each sensor can be programmed to a specific plant type. The Willow in-app database contains more than 600 plant types, with detailed information on what each one needs, plus tips and tricks to help you grow your plant knowledge – along with healthy house plants.

ELEGANCE IN BLOOM
Bring your outdoor spaces to life with a bunch of beautiful ideas from this inspirational four-year-old garden
Photography Jane Dove Juneau
Spring is a magical time and, whether you’re in planning or planting mode, there are loads of cues to be found in this recently revamped garden. Hardscaping helps to define spaces, interesting boundary treatments clean up property edges, and artful inclusions personalise small areas and create drama elsewhere. Add a thoughtful mix of flowers, shrubs and colour and the path to your door will be brighter in no time.
PRETTY PALETTE
For an elegant, cohesive garden scheme, narrow the floral elements to a handful of colours. Nothing says “spring” like flashes of white blooms against a fresh green landscape. In this garden, bursts of red are integrated in hardscaping and plants, creating special moments against the black and white exterior of the home and outbuildings.
FOCAL POINTS
Whether it’s the front entrance, a side path or a boring back fence, there are plenty of ways to use plants to your advantage – drawing the eye to a lovely feature, or away from a dull spot. Cover a fence, trellis or pergola with a scented spring-flowering vine, add a bench seat and enjoy the results season after season. Look for niches and sills to adorn with flower-filled pots or windowboxes. And experiment with depth and symmetry – sometimes two showy planters are better than one.
LEFT Low compact shrubs (buxus) and grasses (mondo) are ideal for lining an entry path. OPPOSITE Sweet-scented rambling star jasmine is a spring sensation, perfect for climbing a fence or trellis or cloaking an outbuilding
PLACE FOR POTS
More than just vessels to hold plants, outdoor pots and planters have a sculptural quality and are decorative in their own right. Spend time selecting the ideal shape, material and colour for the task. A shallow bowl is the perfect centrepiece for an outdoor dining setting (below right). Filled with a dainty-bloomed annual, this dark bowl merges with the tabletop, letting the flowers float above. A trio of terracotta pots (top right) pops against the house exterior; similar pots are used throughout the garden to create bright spots at different heights.
CARE FACTOR
Keep your garden looking good with regular maintenance – pull out weeds as you spot them, deadhead spent blooms, check foliage for pests or diseases, and sweep (or blow) leaves and debris from paths and paved areas. For more spring garden tips, turn to page 49.
PAVE THE WAY
Hard landscaping is important, too, but first ensure levels are right for water runoff and be aware of underground pipes and wiring. Here, pavers and pathways connect different areas, while retaining walls and sheds add functionality plus charm. These elements provide the framework for the plants and ensure the garden remains orderly and accessible. ●

25ways to spring success
Celebrate the new season with these tips for a colourful and lively garden
Words Shelley Tustin
With half an hour to spare or a weekend stretching before you, turn your attention to that dull spot on the balcony or in the yard. With input from garden experts and enthusiasts and the helpful Bunnings Greenlife team, we’ve rounded up tips, tricks and decorative ideas to brighten your world.
1
START WITH A SCRUB
Set off your spring flowers to best advantage with a fresh backdrop. Mud, moss, mould and rust spots might be marring hard surfaces after winter, so pull out the pressure washer and give concrete, pavers and decking boards a good clean.
● Gerni ‘3600’ 1810psi 1500W high pressure washer, $199, I/N: 0235516
NOURISH TO FLOURISH
Plants need access to the right nutrients to put on a floriferous show. Replenish beds, pots and planters in early spring with compost and slow-release fertiliser to provide nutrients over the growing season. Give plants a mid-season boost with a liquid fertiliser. When diluted in water, it’s available for plants to use as soon as applied, says Bunnings Greenlife buyer Mill Wallasvaara. “Seaweed tonics are also great.”
● Scotts ‘Osmocote’ 1kg all purpose controlled release fertiliser, $17.15/1kg, I/N: 2961306
3
PICK FRESH POTS
Enjoy the promise of the new season indoors, too, by upgrading your pot plants to new cache pots. The range of indoor pots is generally brighter than that of outdoor pots, with gorgeous patterns, pretty colours and textured effects.
Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.
SORT OUT BOUNDARIES
Look to your borders, pruning hedges and smartening up any damaged fences. A new coat of paint or stain can have timber fences looking top notch. Tip: dark colours like black and charcoal recede into the background (visually blurring the boundaries of your garden) and make green foliage in front pop.
5
PREP FOR SUCCESS
First pull out pesky weeds then give your garden beds a bit of care and attention. “Before planting, add organic material or mulch to increase the soil’s water and nutrient-holding capacity,” advises Mill. “Mulch helps with weed suppression, which is important prior to spring when new weed seeds are germinating,” she says.
6
PLAN LONG-TERM
Shoots emerging from bare earth signal winter is on its way out. Bulbs are a long-term investment, planted in autumn and stirring into life in spring. Options range from elegant hyacinth cones to cheery anemones. For fragrance, Mill suggests Jonquil ‘Erlicheer’ which flowers through winter into spring and has a strong perfume.
7
SET UP SCENT-SATION
Fragrance is one of the first signs of spring, from the early subtle waft of jasmine to the complex perfume of a full garden in bloom. Horticulturist Tammy Huynh’s favourite picks for fragrant spring flowers are star jasmine, stephanotis, hyacinths, roses, heliotrope and native frangipani. One of the signature scents of the warmer months is lavender and Mill Wallasvaara recommends compact and showy Lavender ‘Berry Beautiful’.
SOW FOR THE SEASON
Enjoying a blooming garden beyond the first flush of flowers requires a bit of strategic planning. Use the ‘succession planting’ method on annuals, setting seed at two or three week intervals for an extended flowering season.
ABOVE Plant the evergreen climber Stephanotis floribunda where you can appreciate its fragrance
SNIP, SNIP
Deadheading flowers keeps a garden tidy and encourages more flowers, as plants put energy into producing blooms, rather than developing seeds. Do this by practising pottering: wander through the garden daily to soak up the beauty – and snip as you go.
9 10
SPICE IT UP
Embracing variety in the garden
not only creates a more layered effect, but ensures you’ll enjoy spring flowers for longer, as the plants take turns to bloom. “Have a range of different plant types, including bulbs, seedlings, perennials and annuals,” says Mill.
● Cyclone ‘Floral Snips’ pruner, $14.90, I/N: 3351018. Some advertised services and products are not available at some Bunnings stores, but products can be ordered.

POP IN A POT
The selection of outdoor pots has grown substantially from standard terracotta, embracing colours, textures and finishes that will add interest to a deck or patio. Use contrast for greatest impact – a black trough against a white wall or cheerful teal in an otherwise gloomy corner.
12
PLANT WITH FLAIR
Choose hardy species which will thrive in containers and be more likely to survive a move or mild neglect. “Rosemary is great as it’s super hardy and useful for cooking, too,” says Mill Wallasvaara. For spots that are sunny, try potting up assorted geraniums. “Another full-sun option that lasts well in a pot and provides lovely colour is mandevilla,” says Mill.
13
CUSTOM A COLOUR
Can’t see the pot you want? Try upcycling terracotta pots in the hue of your choice; choose a pot in the size and shape you love (a rolled rim is an elegant option). Spray terracotta sealer on the inside, then apply primer and paint on the outside.
● Rosemary in Northcote Pottery ‘Kriti’ 45cm x 32cm extra large terracotta pot, $35.18, I/N: 0515821 (plant sold separately)
14
BEAUTIFY A BALCONY
Use pots to create a lush garden scene on hard surfaces, like balconies or patios. The secret to success is good potting mix, says Mill. “Shorter shelf-life items like herbs, vegies and flowering annuals need fresh potting media each time they are planted,” she says. “Longer lived perennials, trees and shrubs can be re-potted every couple of years (depending on pot size) as long as slow-release fertiliser is added for the spring season to encourage plant growth.”

CREATE CALM REFLECTION
A mirror designed specifically for outdoor use makes a stunning decorative statement on house or boundary walls. And if you position it to reflect a favourite feature, like a gorgeous statement tree, garden sculpture or brilliantly blooming rose, you double the impact!

To maintain a healthy garden, take steps to keep it hydrated. “Add organic material to soil, such as compost and well-rotted animal manure, then apply a layer of mulch to help with moisture retention – and water it in well,” says Mill. “Irrigation is great for larger gardens and lawns but, if you have the time, most home gardens, pots, planters and hanging baskets can be managed with hand watering via hose or watering can.”
17
DRESS YOUR SPACE
Take other interior ideas to the outdoors to accessorise your spring playground. Dress up alfresco living areas with a splash of colour from outdoor rugs, brightly patterned cushions or wall decor like an outdoor clock.
18
MAKE IT FUN
A gorgeous garden doesn’t have to be serious. Surprise and delight with playful little additions, like a cute garden gnome peeking out from behind a shrub, or bright stakes to mark seedlings in the vegie patch.
20
BOOST THE BUZZ
Beneficial insects, like bees, are an integral part of a healthy garden ecosystem – and fat little fuzzy bees and graceful butterflies flowerhopping are a joy to behold. To attract pollinators, grow a diverse range of flowers, group loads together, and concentrate on colours that bees love. “White, blue and purple-coloured flowers are good attractors for bees,” says Mill Wallasvaara. “Daisy and lavender are great plant options.”
FIND A FAIRY
19
Get kids outdoors by creating a fairy landscape! Carve out a corner of the garden for imaginative play, or pot up a large planter (or old wheelbarrow) with pretty and hardy flowers. Add a fairy house, then let your little ones accessorise it with painted rocks, aquarium stones for paths or their own little plastic toys.
21
BRING BIRDS
The flutter and chirp of birds adds life and interest to a garden. Attract more of these cheery little creatures by planting native trees and shrubs that are local to your area and adding a pretty birdbath. Spring is a busy time for birds – and post-winter food may be scarce, so give them energy to keep going with a feeder of suitable wild bird seed mix.
WORK WITH WATER
Make your garden a serenity centre this spring, by adding a water feature. The trickle of water adds sound and movement to a garden, masks external noise and promotes tranquillity – perfect for creating a little wellness corner.
23
BEWARE BAD BUGS
● Multicrop ‘EcoSnail’ snail and slug repellent, $11.40/ 750ml, I/N: 0179098
TRY A TREE
Deciduous or springflowering trees announce spring has sprung! Tammy Huynh suggests ornamental pear, plum, cherries and crabapples, and eastern redbuds (Cercis canadensis), which all blossom on leafless branches.
While bees and butterflies are lovely, leaf-eating pests are the enemies of baby spring plants. “Keep an eye out for slugs and snails,” says Mill. “When there are juicy young plants around and lots of moisture, these pests are around too. But it’s important to use animal- and child-friendly controls.”
“For subtropical climates, the pink or yellow trumpet trees (Tabebuia) are deciduous and flower in spring,” she says. “While not deciduous, the native blueberry ash is covered in small pink flowers in spring.” Later in the season, the purple blooms of jacaranda are unmatched in beauty. 24

ADD INTEREST INSIDE
House plants tend to lack the profusion of flowers you see outdoors in a spring garden, but you can still achieve a lively dose of colour and interest with variegated foliage. For pot plants with flair, try calatheas (left), polka dot begonias, velvet-leafed coleus or variegated pothos. ●

Garden fresh
Ready for a healthy harvest this season? Follow these top tips to ensure a bumper crop
The arrival of spring means it’s time to hit refresh on your vegie patch and get it ready for planting. But before you dig in, take the time to tidy the garden and improve the soil, as this will help grow healthy and tasty food. Here’s how to get your patch up to scratch.
TURN OVER A NEW LEAF
To prepare vegie beds, urban gardener Connie Cao (@connieandluna) recommends removing existing plants left over from winter. “Most vegies are annual crops and need to be removed at the end of the growing season,” says Connie. “An easy option is to cut the plants back to ground level, allowing the roots to naturally decompose and provide a source of organic matter to the soil.”
However, if there are weeds, consider pulling them out, as depending on the weed, slashing them can encourage more growth. “Removing existing growth and weeds gives you a clean slate and ensures unnecessary plants are not competing for water and nutrients with newly planted seedlings,” adds Connie.
GO TO GROUND
The soil in a vegetable garden works hard to provide nutrients to productive plants. So take time to ensure all the right elements are present, says horticulturist Helen Lovel of Neutrog Biological Fertilisers. “Most vegies prefer a neutral soil, so a pH of 7,” she says. ”Use a soil test kit to assess your soil pH and adjust with soil improvers/ conditioners as needed.”
Boosting the organic matter in your soil is also vital; it feeds and supports the biological life in the soil, including bacteria, fungi and worms. In turn, they enhance soil structure, increase water retention and promote nutrient availability for your plants.
“Homemade compost is a fantastic source of organic matter,” advises Helen. “Alternatively, pelletised and composted soil improvers, like aged manures, can be bought in store and are also perfect for incorporating organic matter and beneficial microbes into the soil.”
Before applying compost or manure, remove existing vegetation and scrape any mulch to one side or into a wheelbarrow to re-use once seedlings are planted. Spread compost or manure evenly in garden beds and dig in well. If the soil is compacted due to clay or foot traffic, use a garden fork or aerator to loosen and break it up.
‘Black
‘Tommy Toe’, are rich in flavour, boast unique colours and come in a variety of shapes.
● For a bountiful harvest, top the soil with organic matter such as compost at the start of the growing season, says Connie Cao.
● To help prevent blossom end rot – a physiological disorder that causes the bottom of the fruit to rot – Connie suggests adding a handful of dolomite lime to the soil before planting.
● When transplanting tomato seedlings, plant them deeper than usual. “Tomatoes form roots along the length of the stem, so planting them deep will encourage them to grow a stronger root system,” says Connie. “Plant seedlings so only a few of the top leaves are exposed above the soil.”
● Once established – typically after six weeks – feed plants regularly with a specific tomato and vegetable fertiliser.
Insert stakes to support tomatoes at planting time. As the stems grow, tie them loosely to the stakes with garden twine
FAST AND FABULOUS
Many vegetables take as long as 14-16 weeks to form a crop ready for harvest, occupying valuable space for an extended period. Here are six fast-maturing plants to kickstart the growing season
Zucchini
This veg has a sprawling habit, so give it at least 90cm of growing space. One plant will produce dozens of zucchini throughout summer.
Harvest time: 6-8 weeks
Radish
While the crunchy roots are the star of this vegetable, the leaves can also be picked and used in salads.
Beans
Both dwarf and climbing forms are easy to grow. Climbers require a trellis for support but are a great way to make use of vertical space.

Harvest time: 4-6 weeks
Harvest time: 8-10 weeks
Spinach
This superfood is the perfect leafy green for salads, sandwiches, sautés and smoothies. Snip leaves regularly to promote growth.
Harvest time: 6-8 weeks
Lettuce
A compact veg that’s ideal for small spaces. Plus, loose-leaf varieties are a good ‘cut and come again’ option –simply pick outer leaves as needed.
Cucumber
The vines grow best on a trellis, which improves airflow and keeps the fruit off the ground.
Harvest time: 8-10 weeks or longer, depending on the variety

IT’S A COVER-UP
Mulching makes a huge difference to plant growth and soil health. “Mulching regulates soil temperature and minimises moisture loss, while also suppressing weed growth,” explains Helen Lovel. A naturally derived mulch is ideal, as it breaks down over time, adding valuable organic matter to the soil. Helen recommends using a composted, biologically active mulch that contributes all the benefits of a mulch, plus gentle nutrients. “The important thing to remember is to water the ground before and after mulch is applied,” adds Helen. ●
Keep in mind...
■ Wear gloves and a mask when working with potting mix, mulch and compost.
■ Avoid using weedkillers in vegie gardens or near edible plants.
■ After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.
■ Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Cut dahlias on long stems for a stunning show indoors
Budding romance
Plant these flowering favourites now for a glorious display from late spring
SALVIA
This adaptable annual or perennial is easy to grow and comes in a wide variety of forms and colours, producing long-lasting flower spikes that are a magnet for birds, bees and beneficial insects. Suitable for most soil types, salvias like a well-draining spot in full sun and are tolerant of hot, dry conditions once established. Prune back after flowering to encourage a bushy habit.
DAHLIA
Renowned for their spectacular flowers that range from delicate pompoms to dinner plate-sized blooms in just about every colour of the rainbow, dahlias certainly have the ‘wow’ factor. For best results, grow them in a well-draining, sunny spot and stake taller varieties at planting time. Once they reach 20cm tall, pinch out the tops to encourage side shoots.
PETUNIA
Mounding or cascading, petunias are a lovely way to add colour and cheer to beds, pots or hanging baskets. The flowers have single, double or ruffled petals, in various sizes and shades, including multi-coloured forms. Position in full sun, protect seedlings from snails with slug and snail pellets, deadhead and feed often.
GERANIUM
Pot up petunias in hanging baskets and bring a burst of colour up high
Also known as zonal pelargoniums, these are well-loved for their pink, red, orange or white flowers, which can be single or double, and one or two colours on the same flower. They grow well across climates from cool to subtropical, and are drought-hardy once established. Place in full sun to part-shade, in well-drained soil, and liquid feed regularly with a high-potassium fertiliser. ●

Bring soil to life
Naturally regenerate your soil and nurture your plants for a healthier future with new Scotts Organic Plant Food, certified for organic gardens
Growing fresh, healthy produce and flowers organically is often thought to be a confusing and labour-intensive process. Horticulturist Melissa King of Scotts tells us how growing in a more sustainable way is made easier when you revitalise the health of depleted soil, and feed your plants naturally using the new range of organic products from Scotts.
Nourish your family
Perhaps one of the most important areas to go organic in our lives is in the garden, especially when you’re growing produce at home to feed yourself and your family. This is certainly Melissa’s long-held belief. “As a mother of two growing boys, there’s never been a time in my life when I’ve thought more about what my family is eating and the importance of growing food that’s good for our health,” she says.
Scotts’ new range of organic plant foods simplifies this once complicated process, taking away much of the effort of growing naturally. The one-step fertiliser is certified for use in organic gardens, and has been scientifically proven to improve soil and plant health*. “One of the many benefits of gardening is knowing exactly how your food or flowers have been grown,” says Melissa. “For me, organic gardening isn’t just a style that’s in tune with nature, it’s a mindset; a feeling that I’m doing the right thing by my family and for the environment.”
Build soil health
Creating a gorgeous garden filled with an abundance of naturally grown flowers and healthy produce all starts with improving your plants’ foundation. “The power of organic gardening lies in building good soil health, through the addition of organic matter,” explains Melissa. Scotts Organic Plant Food Concentrate is an easy, economical option, while Scotts Organic Plant Food Ready to Use alternative is even more convenient. “It not only increases fertility in the soil, it improves structure
and the soil’s ability to hold onto water and nutrients while encouraging microbes, which are essential to healthy soil,” says Melissa.
“When soil health is at its best, plants are more robust and able to resist attack by pests and diseases – and the result is happier, healthier plants,” she adds. “Building soil health and feeding organically is a long-term and very beneficial investment in your garden. The longer you nurture and care for the soil with organic matter and organic plant foods, the better it gets.”
Less plastic, less waste

MELISSA’S TIPS FOR CREATING AN ORGANIC CONTAINER GARDEN
“If you’re new to organic gardening, one of the easiest ways to start is to create a potted garden. Begin by filling decorative containers with Scotts Organic Potting Mix for All Plants. It’s certified for organic gardens and packed with lots of natural goodness, like blood and bone, seaweed and chicken manure.”
“Plant your container garden with compactgrowing vegetables like tumbling tomatoes, lettuces or silverbeet, or bring nature into your backyard with pollinator plants like lavender, echinacea or salvias.”

THE PATH TO A LUSHER LAWN
Here are the tools you need to get your grass looking green and gorgeous
Words Mitchell Mclean
As the temperature rises and the sun starts to linger longer, it’s time to give your lawn the care it needs. Aside from mowing, spring and summer maintenance calls for some specific tools to ensure the grass is in tiptop condition for the warmer months ahead.
LAWN SPREADER
There’s no time like spring to give the grass a boost with a dose of lawn fertiliser. For granular formulations, a spreader makes the job clean and simple as well as ensuring even application of the product across the ground. A spreader also comes in handy for sowing grass seed over any bare patches in need of repair.
WEED PULLER
If neglected, weeds can spread rapidly across even the most neatly mowed lawn. A weed puller is a chemical-free way to get rid of these unwanted invaders by uprooting them at their source. And the task doesn’t have to be backbreaking – models with an extension handle eliminate the need for you to bend over.
LINE TRIMMER
Also known as a whipper snipper or string trimmer, a line trimmer is a great tool for clearing growth that you can’t get to with the lawn mower. Use it to neaten up areas around trees and along fence lines and edges to give your lawn area a tidy and well maintained appearance.
SOIL AERATOR
Over time, soil compaction can impede the uptake of nutrients and water, resulting in dwindling grass growth. Aerators solve this problem and revitalise your lawn from the ground up by creating holes in the soil that let oxygen, water and nutrients reach deep into the root zone.
LAWN EDGER
Clean, crisp and welldefined edges make a big difference when improving the overall look of your garden. An edger adds a polished touch by creating a neat line between areas of lawn and features such as driveways, flowerbeds and garden paths.
PH TESTER
Knowing the pH of your soil is key to keeping your grass growing in the best possible conditions. By providing you with useful information about the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, a pH tester gives you the knowledge to feed your lawn appropriately.
GRASS SHEARS
A pair of grass shears provides unparalleled control for trimming with precision around delicate plants or garden features. Their small size and portability make them the perfect go-to tool for tidying stray growth and making edges appear flawless.
To achieve a smooth line, maintain a steady pace when using an edger
RAKE
While it might seem lo-fi, a rake is an incredibly useful lawn-care tool. Use one to clear leaves, thatch and debris so that all-important sunshine can reach your grass. Choose from a range of rake types to meet your particular requirements, such as dethatching or spring cleaning.
GOOD SAVE!
To maintain a healthy lawn, especially in spring and summer, water deeply and sparingly to promote root growth and reduce water waste. Use sprinklers or adjustable hose nozzles suited to your lawn’s size and design, and minimise evaporation by avoiding watering during the hottest part of the day. Instead, do it in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler, allowing water to penetrate into the soil. Always check with your local authority if watering restrictions apply in your area. ●

The local buzz
If you think of bees as the yellow and black buzzy insects which live in hives, think again. Those are European bees, brought to Australia in the 1800s. In Australia we have more than 1500 types of native bees which play an important role in our gardens. They pollinate our fruit and vegies and many are the only bees that can pollinate certain native plants. While they don’t produce honey, native bees are sweet in other ways, bringing colour and life to the garden. Blue-banded bees flash a beautiful metallic blue-green, while the fat teddy bear bees have thick red-brown fur on their bodies. Most native bees live by themselves in decaying wood, between rocks or tunnel into soil. You can encourage them to live in your garden by picking up a native bee sanctuary kit from Bunnings, which includes a ‘bee hotel’ and pollinator-attracting flower seeds.

HAIR-RAISING TALES
We’re not the only ones spring-flinging off our warm coats around now – some pets are also starting to shed their winter woollies. Dog grooming educator Colleen Beagley at igroomhub.com.au says that while fluffy dogs such as oodles and terriers generally need grooming all year round, spring is a good time to groom double-coated breeds. Samoyeds, Bernese mountain dogs, golden retrievers, corgis and Pomeranians can all do with a groom to keep the dead coat from becoming stuck in the healthy coat. Even cats can do with a bit of help. “Cats with a lot of hair will often find themselves ingesting the dead hair
they lick out – leading to hairballs that can be dangerous for their health. Getting in with a brush and removing that dead coat will help keep them fresh and fabulous and with a much smaller hairball risk,” says Colleen. Plus, regular brushing of your cat or dog is a great way to bond with your pet and leads to less hair in the house. It’s a win-win for everyone!

FUR THERAPY
Pets can be our sunshine on a cloudy day, with proven mental health benefits for their owners
Not much beats the feeling you get when your pet gazes into your eyes as you pat them. People simply love connecting with animals. There’s proof that it’s good for us, too. Dr Luke Martin, clinical psychologist and spokesperson for Beyond Blue, says a 2021 survey shows around three in four pet owners report improved mental health as a result of owning their pet1. “Our Beyond Blue community backs this up, regularly telling us how much the bond they share with their pet supports their mental health,” he says. “Depression and anxiety can make us want to shut out the world, but our pets, and our responsibility to them as owners, gently nudge us to stay connected and engaged in life.”
CHEMICAL REACTION
Cuddling up with a cute fur friend just feels good – but there’s also science behind those happy feelings. Dr Luke
says studies show that interacting with an animal has a calming effect on our nervous system, which reduces our experience of stress and also helps us cope better during difficult situations2 “There is preliminary research that shows gazing into your dog’s eyes might release feel-good hormones like dopamine and oxytocin,” he says.3
OUT AND ABOUT
The positive effects go way beyond simply being with your pet. If you have a dog, you’ll need to take it for regular walks, which has many benefits for good mental health: company, exercise, connection with other pet owners and routine. Being responsible for a pet’s wellbeing also gives us purpose and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. And you only have to see a dog romping about in the water or a cat chasing a ball to be reminded not to take life too seriously and to try to live in the moment.

LOVE FOR ALL AGES
Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, and Dr Luke says the joy and routine a pet brings to a family can benefit children’s mental health. “Children also rank pets highly as providing feelings of security, companionship, self-esteem and comfort4. Dog ownership, in particular, is associated with increased physical activity for kids, which improves their overall health,” he says.5
The same goes for those who have additional needs, or older people. Assistance dogs can provide valuable emotional and practical support, and have been shown to reduce anxiety and depression6. “If you’re feeling lonely or upset, your pet is there with unconditional love and comfort. Taking time to give your pet a scratch behind the ear or a tummy rub can help you get through a difficult moment,” says Dr Luke.

SPRING INTO GEAR
Follow these six steps to spruce up your outdoor area for the new season
Words Caroline Botting
1CLEAR GRIME AND DEBRIS
Start with a thorough clean-up. Pressure-wash paths, driveways, stone walls and outdoor furniture, as well as windows and fences, says Candice Cook of Kärcher. “This helps to remove dirt, stains, algae and moss, restoring the original appearance of the surfaces, and can eliminate harmful contaminants that may cause deterioration over time,” she says. “Accessories such as the new Kärcher eco!Booster nozzle make the job even quicker and more efficient.” With the fire season ahead, this is also the time to remove debris from your gutters.
2
GET SMART WITH TECH
Make evenings memorable with smart lighting. Install ambient lighting for the barbecue area or something brighter for a party. Add motion-activated sensor lights to keep you and your guests safe when arriving or leaving at night. And think about rigging up a smart camera and alarm system to keep an eye on your home when you’re out and about.
3
DO AN IRRIGATION AUDIT
Check for any leaks or blockages in your irrigation system and replace damaged components. Well-maintained tubes and fittings will ensure your plants get the water they need to thrive. To keep your garden lush whether you’re home or away, consider installing a smart irrigation system with automated scheduling –
you can set different watering zones and even receive freeze warnings and other updates.
4
ADD OUTDOOR STORAGE
A clutter-free garden is a happy, welcoming space. Invest in durable outdoor storage to keep hoses, garden tools and accessories organised and out of sight. This not only protects your equipment, but keeps outdoor areas looking neat.
5
BLITZ THE BARBECUE
Prepare your outdoor cooking zone for those spring gatherings. Start with a deep clean of your grilling
set for entertaining with festoon lights and bench seating
machine. Catherine Brown from Selleys recommends using specialised barbecue cleaners and products. “They make a tough job easy so you can get your barbecue area ready in no time!” says Catherine. Don’t forget to check your gas bottle is full and all connections are secure.
6
CHECK YOUR TOOLS
Inspect garden gear and hoses for wear and tear. Wellmaintained tools make outdoor tasks easier and safer – loose handles and cracked blades can lead to mishaps. Replace damaged items and ensure everything is stored away securely. ●

Hit all the right notes in your next home project, with our guide to leading looks in kitchen, bathroom and laundry design
Words Jane Parbury
Adopt an innovative new style when renovating your kitchen, bathroom and laundry, and you might find you’re soon stuck with a look you no longer love – right? Wrong. The latest trends are as adaptable as they are interesting, and some updates can be integrated in small tweaks or big projects as you choose. Renters can also get in on the action! Here’s how.

CONSIDERED DESIGN
Everything from the sourcing of original materials to the environmental practices of the manufacturer is important to today’s consumer, says Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright. “Lower-impact and more considered solutions are no longer a trend, but a fundamental principle woven into the fabric of households,” she says.
New tech is driving change in the bathroom, says Andy Grigor at GWA Group (which distributes Caroma, Methven and Dorf). “Technology is playing a crucial role, by optimising both water and energy consumption through the integration of smart thermostats and water sensors,” he says. Look to: Energy-efficient and water-wise appliances, and responsibly sourced timber for cabinetry. Select tapware, showers, toilets and a washing machine that score a rating of four stars or more in the Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS).
PALETTES THAT POP
Colour is becoming key to a home we love. Giorgia Manenti at Kaboodle Kitchen believes there will always be a place for white kitchens, but using colour is definitely on the rise. “Greens and blues are now somewhat neutral colourways for the kitchen,” she says. “They have timeless appeal but add vibrancy.” Decorating with colour walks hand-in-hand with the personality-plus trend. “As with kitchens, this season we are seeing an influx of saturated colours across bathroom and powder rooms, from floors and walls to ceilings and vanities,” says Jane. “Like a monochromatic
fantasy, the colour-drenching trend is all about a singlehued explosion across all surfaces in a room,” she explains. Look to: Accessories such as benchtop appliances can add easy colour. A free weekend, a tin of paint and a roller (plus permission from your landlord if renting) could be all you need to update paintable surfaces like timber cabinets and walls. For bathrooms, choose a specialist paint that copes with moisture and a colour that works with existing tiles.
MAKE IT YOURS
The home-centric habits built during the pandemic –and more recent cost of living challenges – have driven the personalisation of interiors. “We’re witnessing the emergence of unconventional kitchen spaces that celebrate individualism and personal expression,” says Jane. Displaying favourite pieces is part of developing a space with personality. “A few years ago, we wanted to conceal everything, but now we want to store larger, less attractive appliances away, and display personal items we’ve collected over the years,” says Giorgia. In the bathroom, individuality reigns. “Your choice of vanity, mirror, tiling or tapware can steal the spotlight,” says Jane. “These bathrooms are all about selfexpression and boundless possibilities.”
Look to: Create vignettes in glazed kitchen cabinetry or on open shelves, and source beautiful bathroom accessories that appeal to you, like a vintage mirror or pretty soap dish. You can even swap out old for new (or new for old!) elegant tapware – usually a simple job for a licensed plumber.
Saturated colour is finding its way into all rooms of the home, and sunny cabinetry and bold tiles are winners in a laundry. Keep your tiles in tiptop shape using a paste made of bi-carb and vinegar and a grout brush or old toothbrush.
Glass care USE A SQUEEGEE AFTER EVERY SHOWER TO KEEP THE SCREEN PRISTINE
WELLNESS MATTERS
Health and wellbeing is growing in focus, especially in the kitchen and bathroom – or ‘spa-throom’. “The bathroom is regarded as a place to unwind and wash away stress,” says Jane Wright. There’s been growth in the use of biophilic design principles, notes Andy Grigor. “These incorporate elements such as living green walls, natural light and views of nature into bathrooms,” he says. And, since the pandemic, the use of natural materials has also increased, says Jane. “Not only do they have a rich aesthetic quality, but they are increasingly being recognised for their health benefits (reducing the amount of chemically treated items in the home),” she explains.

Living large in a small space
Elevate the aesthetic appeal of a petite property with a carefully considered lighting concept that adds interest and style
Small-space living is becoming increasingly popular as a way to save money and live more simply, but it can present decorating challenges. Adding visual interest without creating clutter can be tricky, whether you’re setting up your own home or making a short-term rental property such as an AirBnB more inviting.
These three simple tips can help you use lighting to create a welcoming environment without taking up valuable floor space or breaking the budget.
Create a sense of height
In a modest living area, dining room or even bedroom, take full advantage of vertical space by using the long lines of a statement pendant light to visually extend the room upwards. Hanging a feature piece such as the Mercator Bree bamboo pendant over a lounge, dining table or bed draws the eye and encourages people to look up rather than out to find breathing room. Choosing a pendant made from natural materials such as Bree’s light blonde bamboo
strips is also a great way to add texture and warmth to your space – perfect for a boho or beachy aesthetic.
Layer your lights
Strip lights are an effective option for lighting up compact homes, as they can make a big impact without taking up space. When styling a small kitchen, consider choosing sleek, contemporary light fixtures such as a Verve Design black Bain pendant to add urban appeal. Next, layer things up by installing Arlec 5m smart strip lights with Grid Connect under the upper cabinets. The warming glow of these subtle lights creates a welcoming ambience, while having different levels and colours of lighting brings depth to the room to visually open it up. Each flexible lighting strip can be cut to fit your cabinets, and the adhesive backing makes DIY installation a breeze.
LED strip lighting is a wonderfully versatile and cost-effective way to add a designer aesthetic and cosy up a small space
DISCOVER THE RANGE
Cosy up with table lamps
Even the most bijou of places can benefit from having a snug corner sectioned off for much-needed relaxation. A comfortable armchair nestled into the corner of a living room can draw you in and create a space to unwind. Increase the intimacy of this nook with a characterfilled accent table topped with a statement lamp such as the Mercator black Chiara table lamp. Fitting it with a mellow yellow-toned bulb adds to the cosy vibe while increasing illumination, creating a perfect spot for curling up with a good book.
Head in store to see the full range of Arlec, Verve Design and Mercator lighting options available at
Timber care WIPE UP SPILLS, AVOID DIRECT HEAT, SAND AND RE-OIL OR RESEAL EVERY TWO YEARS
Look to: Natural materials, and hygienic, easy-clean surfaces and products such as rimless toilets. Non-permanent updates may include extra storage to keep surfaces clean and clear, potted greenery and high-comfort items such as plug-in heated towel rails.
MATERIAL MASH-UP
Metals, timber and natural stone are increasingly the go-to materials. “In terms of cabinetry, we’re seeing lots of dark woodgrains,” says Giorgia Manenti. “Cool metals and metallics are also on the rise.” Marble, with its myriad tones and patterns, is huge. “It’s the time of strongly veined marble, the busier the better for unmissable luxury and
next-level style,” says Jane Wright. As for tapware, chrome continues to reign as the top choice for tapware colour, says Andy Grigor. “Matt black has firmly established itself in our standard palette, while brushed nickel and brushed brass remain popular choices, with bronze gaining momentum.” Another trend to keep an eye on, he adds, is matt white tapware. “Particularly as matt white basins and toilets grow in popularity.”
Look to: If you’re renovating, timber and marble is a match made in design heaven. For a quick and cost-effective style tweak, introduce marble accessories to the kitchen bench, and bring warmth into a bathroom or laundry with a timber shelf, small storage unit or hamper.
COUNTER CONVERTS
Say goodbye to composite stone and hello to these benchtop alternatives
Timber and bamboo “Great options, especially for areas like a kitchen island and butler’s pantry if you want to inject warmth and tactility,” says Giorgia.
Stainless steel A constant in professional kitchens, this utilitarian material is now enjoying a revival in domestic settings. Laminate “You can achieve the look of stone, timber, concrete and marble for
a really affordable price that will also stand the test of time,” says Giorgia. Ceramic Andy says, “Ceramic countertops are enjoying a surge in demand due to their durability, scratch and stain resistance, and minimal maintenance needs.”
Natural stone Especially marble, with its myriad patterns and hues, which is virtually a trend in itself.

QUICK PLINTHS
Elevate potted plants by making plinths from pine offcuts to fit along or across the base of the planter boxes. Cut pieces to fit, paint to seal the cut edges, assemble with predrilled holes and 30mm screws, then apply two coats of exterior paint.
Keep in mind...
■ H3 treated pine is not suitable for in-ground use, so these planters are designed to hold potted plants and are not intended to hold soil or any other growing media.
■ Set up the circular saw to make accurate, repetitive cuts. Or cut the first piece as a template to mark and cut the rest one at a time to allow for the thickness of the blade.
■ Wear a mask and work in a well-ventilated area when cutting, sanding and painting.
■ When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear.
■ As with all outdoor furniture, these pieces are best kept under cover to maximise weather resistance.
STEP 1: CUT AND PAINT
1 Following the cutting list, measure and mark the primed 92mm x 18mm H3 pine, then cut to length with a mitre saw, sanding off any breakout. Using a roller, paint all pieces around the ends, sides and one face, leaving to dry. Repeat to paint the other face and apply a second coat around the edges and ends, to ensure they are sealed. Leave to dry.
STEP 3: BUILD BENCH
3 Repeat Step 2 to make the end panels, then position them against the bench sides, predrill into the uprights and secure. Position top slats, edges flush with the sides, using screws as spacers, then predrill and secure. Position top cleat inside across top slats, predrill and secure.
STEP 5: ADD CASTORS
STEP 2: MAKE SIDE PANELS
2 For the bench and planters, working on one at a time, set out the side slats with 20mm screws as spacers, using a builder’s square to line up the ends. Use pine offcuts as spacers to position the uprights 20mm in from the ends, flush with the top and base. Predrill offset holes into each slat and secure with 30mm screws.
STEP 4: BUILD PLANTERS
4 Position the end slats against side panel uprights, lining them up using screws as spacers, then predrill two holes into each joint and secure. Position the base slats flush with the sides and centred to create even gaps, predrill and secure. Tip: Predrill holes 9mm in from the edges.
STEP 6: SAND AND PAINT
6 Sand holes to remove any breakout, smooth over with timber filler and leave to dry. Sand off excess filler, wipe away dust with a damp cloth, then apply two coats of paint to planters and bench, inside and out. Tip: Use offcuts to make plinths for inside the planters to raise 250mm plastic pots in saucers, see box (top left). ● Now see how to make modular chairs and table for outside: bunnings.com.au/ outdoor-furniture Watch it!
5 For the bench, on the underside, position the base cleats on the uprights, predrill and secure. For the planters, position the cleats across the ends to secure. Position castors, with brakes on diagonally opposite corners, mark through the plates to drill 3mm-deep starter holes, and secure with 20mm button screws.

PLANTING
UP!
Working from the top, part-fill each terracotta pot with potting mix, add a plant and backfill, firming the mix down to remove any air bubbles. Position potted flowers in the trough; if they sit too low, remove and add more potting mix to trough, firming it down. Take flowers from their pots, arrange in the trough and backfill, firming down the mix. Water in all plants, starting with the pots at the top of the frame and working your way down.

■ Secure the planter to the wall with appropriate fixings if in an exposed area.
STEP 1: CUT AND PAINT
1 For the frame sides, use an angle grinder to cut a mesh sheet into a rectangle of four by nine squares. Repeat with a second sheet. For the frame ends, cut the remaining sheet into two rectangles of one by nine squares. Spray all pieces with a coat of epoxy enamel paint and leave to dry.
STEP 2: MAKE FRAME
2 Stand the side pieces upright between the end pieces. The horizontal bars of one side piece should be inside the frame, while those on the other side piece face outwards. The horizontal bars of the ends should be on the outside of the frame. Starting at the top, secure frame with cable ties at every second square. Check that it’s square. Wrap tie wire over cable ties, twist ends to secure and use pliers to trim ends. The ties should be taut, with no movement in the frame corners.
STEP 3: FILL TROUGH
3 Move the trough to its final location, then position the mesh frame in the base. Check that it’s square. Half-fill the trough with potting mix, firming it down to remove any air bubbles.
STEP 4: ADD POTS
4 Starting from the base, install two pots in each row spaced one square apart, staggering the positions. Insert pots on an angle then sit lip on the frame bars. See ‘Planting up!’ box (opposite). ●
