PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

INDOOR CHAIR VOLLEYBALL WITH HARRY

Thursdays at Joslyn 12:45pm-1:45pm

It’s just like volleyball, but instead with a chair and a beach ball. The game follows regular volleyball rules with some exceptions. The beach ball is larger than a regular volleyball so it is easier to control. There are many benefits to chair volleyball, such as reducing stress, improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing flexibility and toning muscles. This is a great way to enjoy some exercise and socialize. Join in on the fun! Starts Thursday, April 13.

T’AI CHI CHIH WITH PAT

Tuesdays at Joslyn 2:00pm-3:00pm

T’ai Chi Chih is not a martial art but rather a tool for self-healing. Softness, flow and effortless are guiding principles in this practice. The 19 movements and one pose are designed to stimulate, circulate and balance the vital energy of universal life force, referred to as Qi, which is inherent in all of us. T’ai Chi Chih is often thought of as a moving mediation because of the calming effect on the mind and emotions, and the release of tension throughout the body. Give this new class a try!

DRUM CIRCLE WITH AMY

Mondays at Joslyn 3:00pm-4:00pm

This activity is for everyone whether you are a beginner or have been drumming for awhile. There are drums available or you may bring your own. You may also bring CDs to play along with. This is for fun! Come and have a good time!

*ACTIVITY SCHEDULES CAN BE FOUND AT JOSLYN AND TUTTLE CENTERS*

April is National Volunteer Month!

Learn about volunteering through the Burbank Volunteer Program (BVP).

The Burbank Volunteer Program recruits individuals 55 years of age and older to volunteer in the Burbank community. BVP volunteers are vital, contributing members of our community, making a significant difference in addressing serious concerns of individuals in need. Whether it be delivering hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors, or spending an hour comforting an isolated senior, to showing support to our American troops and medical first responders, BVP volunteers all share the commitment to improve the lives of people of all ages and needs.

BVP not only helps to address serious social challenges in the community, but also encourages older adults to continue as active members of our community by engaging them in meaningful volunteer service. Enrollment in BVP is open to all persons 55 years of age and older. Volunteers are required to satisfy two background checks, one with the California State Department of Justice, and another that is national with the National Center for Safety Initiatives. Volunteers that receive full background clearance are provided an orientation prior to beginning volunteer services, followed by appropriate on-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed. BVP supports older adult volunteers in their service by providing supplemental liability insurance, along with social and education activities annually. There are no dues or educational requirements. Our volunteers reflect a diversity of educational backgrounds, income levels, experiences, ethnicity’s, religions, sexual orientation, disabilities and political affiliations.

Last year, BVP volunteers provided over 30 thousand hours of service, a value of more than $900 thousand (based on the independent sector average value of volunteer service of $29.95 per hour). Approximately, 80% of those hours were logged in by volunteers age 55+. BVP volunteers make an impact throughout the City of Burbank in a variety of settings. Some examples of their areas of service include:

• Education: 87 volunteers assist the Burbank Library Services with after school programs, and adult literacy programs, or provide their expertise in other areas related to education.

• Health & Human Services: 136 volunteers care for homebound elders in need , work to improve senior nutrition, and volunteer in other areas related to health care and health education.

• Animal Sheltering: 120 volunteers assist the Burbank Animal Shelter in a myriad of ways, devoting over 6300 hours last year to providing medical, social, behavioral, and financial care for animals at risk and are determined to eliminate animal homelessness in the Burbank community.

California Department of Aging (CDA) has begun posting success stories on their website for the month of March. On this occasion, we would like to highlight The City of Burbank’s Burbank Nutrition Services success story. Their story has been posted to the Older Californians Nutrition Program Success Stories page at aging.ca.gov.

The City of Burbank’s Senior Nutrition Program congregate sites have been offering hybrid meal distribution to eligible participants, which has been very successful. Both Home Delivered Meal Program and Hybrid Meal Distribution participants enjoy a variety of high quality, hot, fresh/cold, and frozen meals. The City of Burbank’s Senior Nutrition Program served more than 100,000 meals from July 2022 to December 2022. The program has expanded to meet community needs and continues to offer high quality services and nutritious meals.
