JULY UPDATES

June was a blast! We started off with En Compas Flamenco Dance School performing for us here at Joslyn. We ended with a Luau party brought to you by Comfort Keepers. We would like to thank Comfort Keepers for celebrating their National Day of Joy with us. There was food, games, raffles, and even a performance from our amazing Hula group. Hopefully we can make this an annual event. Wouldn’t that be great?

Did you know that in July we celebrate National Park and Recreation Month? Since 1985, people in the United States have celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. You can learn more about this year’s theme, “Where Community Grows”, on the next page.

We have our Printmaking class returning to Joslyn Adult Center. This time Nancy will also show you how to make an accordion book. It is $20 for those that have a current BSAC. There are a limited number of spots so don’t miss out. You can sign up at the front desk.

For those that participate in the Nutrition program, all participants must fill out a new Universal Intake Form beginning July 1, 2023. For more information, you can contact your pick-up site. Also, 2023 Senior Farmers’ Market coupons will be available soon, date is to be determined.

Heading to the Starlight Bowl this summer? The BurbankBus Senior & Disabled Transportation office has informed us you will be able to schedule a ride for all Starlight Bowl summer season concerts. Contact the office at 818.238.5360 for more information.

We hope you have a great start to summer spending it with family, friends, or even with us here at Joslyn or Tuttle. We are always here for you.

Park and Recreation Month 2023: Where Community Grows

Since 1985, people in the United States have celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation and to recognize the more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals - along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers - that maintain our country’s local, state and community parks and recreation facilities

This month we highlight how Our Community Grows through the essential services offered by our staff at Burbank Parks and Recreation. Our staff has worked hard to make this year a success. We are proud to share what the team has been up to.

Join us and National Recreation and Park Association in celebrating! Our community can join in on the celebration in a variety of ways. Here are some ways you can participate below:

Volunteer at a DIG Burbank Event.

- Volunteer to help keep our parks looking beautiful! Enjoy a concert at the Starlight Bowl.

- Visit StarlightBowl.com for a list of performances and to purchase tickets. Go for a hike.

- Go for a hike on of our trails. There are various trails to follow and enjoy the scenery in.

Enjoy art!

- Visit our newest photography gallery exhibit by Warner LeMenager at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center.

We invite our community to share how parks and recreation have benefited you and positively impacted your quality of life on social media by tagging us on Instagram @burbank_parksandrec with the hashtags #BurbankParksAndRec and #WhereCommunityGrows.

The menu is set for a six week cycle. The approved menu by the Los Angeles County dietitian assists us and our project dietitian in providing nutritious, appetizing, and high quality meals for our seniors.

5 Ways to Balance Blood Sugar

With the incidence of diabetes and pre-diabetes rates on the rise, balancing blood sugar becomes even more important. Healthy eating and an active lifestyle not only support good health, they also play a role in balancing blood sugar levels.

Begin with a Balanced Plate

When it comes to what’s on your plate, it is not only the type of food but the portion and balance to keep blood sugar in check. Build a balanced plate by:

 Filling half your plate with non-starchy vegetables including: broccoli, tomatoes, green beans, spinach, asparagus and salad greens.

 One-quarter lean protein, focus on fish and poultry.

 One-quarter healthy carbs; a whole grain such as bulgur or quinoa, legumes or a small potato.

 Garnish with a healthy fat such as avocado or olive oil.

Be Carb Conscious– Know Your Carbs

Pair Carbs with Lean Protein and /or a Healthy Fats

Always have lean protein and/or a healthy fat with fruits, grains and starchy vegetables. This can help slow down the digestion of carbs, minimizing spikes in blood sugar.

As a snack try Greek yogurt with berries or an apple with string cheese.

Carbs are the preferred fuel for the body, as they offer a variety of nutrients and play an important part of a balanced diet. However, they have the biggest impact on blood sugar and need to be chosen wisely. Not all carbs are created equal.

 Focus on whole minimally processed nutrient dense carbs. They are rich in fiber, vitamins & minerals and no added sugar. The fiber in these carbs slows down absorption of blood sugar.

 Minimize refined and highly processed carbs including sweets, chips, juices, sweetened beverages and desserts. The carbs in these foods will be absorbed quickly due to minimal fiber content and will raise blood sugar. Check the Nutrition Facts label on packaged foods for added sugar, keeping it as low as possible.

 Space carbs throughout the day to prevent highs and lows in blood sugar.

Eat at Regular Inter vals Try to have meals/snacks approximately 3-5 hours apart. Avoid going for long periods without eating, as this may result in low blood sugar. This can lead to cravings for carbs, especially sweets, spiking blood sugar. Get ahead of hunger and maintain blood sugar by having balanced meals & snacks at regular intervals.

Be Physically Active

Physical activity can improve blood sugar and help insulin to work better. Regular activity also aids in achieving or maintaining a healthy body weight.

 Pick an activity, start slowly and build on it.

 Try different activities to keep your interest and for maximum benefits.

 Aim for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. This can be split up; it does not need to be all at one time.
