Just like that folks, July is upon us! Hopefully you are celebrating the Fourth with friends, family, and some good BBQ! Although it is starting to heat up, it’s important to spend time outside gardening, taking walks, or going to some fun places to cool off! Take advantage of the pools, beaches and the nice cool refreshing foods the heat has to offer.
Just as a reminder, both Tuttle and Joslyn Adult Center will be closed in honor of Independence Day so be sure to plan accordingly. Remember, Senior Board will not be meeting this month.
Don’t forget that our BSAC prices are increasing in July which means Burbank residents will pay $22 and non-residents will pay $27. Please be sure to plan ahead to renew your activity cards if you know when it will be expiring. You may ask the staff at the front desk to check on when your card will be expired.
Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in July. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone. If there is anyone out there missing daytrips - there may be a temporary fix for that travel want. The “On the Move” program holds trips every month right out of Joslyn. They take people to places such as museums, art exhibits, outlet malls and so much more. Be sure to check out their ad on the “Joslyn and Tuttle” events pages to learn more about how to join on their trips!
For the most up-to-date information on classes, events, and our monthly presentations, please visit Joslyn and Tuttle or check out our website.

How to Celebrate Plastic-Free July
Plastic Free July is a powerful movement that encourages us to rethink our relationship with plastic and make conscious choices to reduce our plastic consumption. This global initiative empowers individuals to take action and make a positive impact on the environment. In this post, we’ll explore 6 exciting activities that you can engage in during Plastic Free July, allowing you to celebrate sustainability while embracing a plastic-free lifestyle. Let’s dive in and discover how you can make a difference!
6 Sustainable Ways to Celebrate Plastic Free July
• Embrace Reusable Essentials
Invest in high-quality resuable items such as stainless steel water bottles, cloth shopping bags, and food containers. By swapping out single-use plastics with reusable alternatives, you can significantly reduce waste.
• Shop at Farmer’s Markets
Support local farmers and artisans by shopping at farmers’ markets. Enjoy fresh produce, artisinal goods, and packaged-free options. Bring your own reusable bags and containers to minimize plastic waste.
• Get Creative with DIY Cleaning Products
Create your own cleaning products using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. DIY cleaning products are effective, and you can keep reusing your containers.
• Ditch Disposable Cutlery and Takeout Containers
Avoid single-use plastic cutlery by carrying your own reusable set when dining out or ordering takeout. Bamboo or wheat straw cutlery sets are lightweight, portable and eco-friendly.
• Explore Package-Free Stores
Discover package-free stores in your area. These innovative store offer a wide range of products, from dry goods to personal care items, in bulk. Bring your own containers and fill them up with the quantities you need.

Nourishing News– Home Food Safety Storage Tips
We cannot see, smell or taste harmful bacteria that may be in the food we eat. Foodborne illness can cause anyone to get sick; however, those with compromised immune systems and older adults are at a higher risk. Safe steps in food storage are key to keeping food safe.
COLD FOOD STORAGE
CLEAN – Keep the refrigerator clean! On a regular basis check and discard old or outdated foods, clean shelving with soapy water, rinse and sanitize food contact surfaces. Use ready-made sanitizer or sanitizer wipes indicated as safe for food contact surfaces OR prepare a solution of chlorine (bleach) at 50 ppm. Mix 1/2 tsp. bleach in 4 cups of water.
CHI LL – Refrigerate promptly. Cold temperatures slow the growth of bacteria. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 41°F and freezer below 10°F. This is one of the most effective ways to keep food safe. Use a refrigerator thermometer to check the temperature, and adjust the thermostat as needed. Always thaw or cool leftovers in the refrigerator, never leave on the counter. Avoid overloading the fridge, as it may impair the ability to function properly.
SEPARATE – Don’t cross contaminate. Always keep raw foods separate from ready to eat foods, and clean produce separate from uncleaned produce. Store eggs in their original carton on the bottom shelf with raw meats, seafood & poultry, below cooked foods.
Rotate– Use older foods first (first in, first out). Date foods, especially leftovers. Use leftovers within 3 days. Check dates on packaged foods. Remember, bacteria that causes foodborne illness cannot be seen, tasted or smelled.
DRY STORAGE BASICS
Store bulk dry goods in containers with tight fitting lids, label and date.
If cans show signs of leaking or bulging, toss them out
Store spices & oil away from heat and light.
Check dates on packaged foods.
HOW LONG DOES FOOD L AST?
Although many foods have dates, they are not required to by federal law. Manufacturer dates indicate when the quality is best. This is not an indicator of food safety. What do these terms mean?
“Sell-By” - how long the store can display the product.
“Best if Used By” or “Use-By” - when you should eat or freeze the food for best quality. Food may be good past this date if it was handled correctly. Keep in mind, as soon as the package is opened these dates do not apply.
Refrigerated foods generally are good for 3-7 days, some condiments and hard cheeses will last longer. When it doubt, throw it out.
Freezer: if the food has freezer burn, is unlabeled, or in the freezer more than six-months, toss it out!
