MAY UPDATES

May is a month of celebrations and rememberance. On May 8, we celebrate Mother’s Day. This day is to honor and thank those in our lives that have been mothers and mentors to us. We are thankful for all of the women who raised us, taught us, led us, and continue to make a difference in our lives. On May 30, we will observe Memorial Day. It is a day to remember those who have lost their lives serving this country. We thank all of our seniors who have served, as well as their partners and families. Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the celebration of Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is Age My Way. It focuses on how older adults can age in their communities, living independently for as long as possible and participating in ways they choose. The city will commemorate this occasion on May 3, at the City Council Meeting and present Ron Rothacher and Lorry Izor as the 2022 Peter McGrath Outstanding Senior Volunteer Service Awardees. We are excited to annouce that Ballroom Dance is back at Joslyn on Thursday Evenings. The first dance begins May 5. You can pick of a schedule of the bands performing at the front desk. Gadget Tutoring and One-On-One Computer Assistance has returned to Joslyn this month. If you need help with your portable electronic device, contact Joslyn to schedule an appointment 818.238.5353. We hope you are as excited as we are to have programs returning this month. Have a wonderful May!

Older Americans Month Older adults play vital, positive roles in our communities - as family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce, and more. Just as every person is unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it - and there is no “right” way. That’s why the theme for Older Americans Month 2022 is Age My Way. Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the celebration of OAM. This year’s theme focuses on how older adults can age in their communities, living independently for as long as possible and participating in ways they choose. While Age My Way will look different for each person, here are common things everyone can consider: • Planning: Think about what you will need and want in the future, from home and community-based services to community activities that interest you. • Engagement: Remain involved and contribute to your community through work, volunteer, and/or civic participation opportunities. • Access: Make home improvements and modifications, use assistive technologies, and customize supports to help you better age in place. • Connection: Maintain social activities and relationships to combat social isolation and stat connected to your community.
