MAY UPDATES
Happy May, everyone! We have so much to celebrate this month. We want to wish those in our lives who have been mothers and mentors to us a Happy Mother’s Day. We have a few special events to celebrate our wonderful mothers. The Valley Porcelain Artists will be having their Mother’s Day Tea event on May 6. Tuttle will have a special Mother’s Day Celebration on Thursday, May 11.
May is also a month of remembrance. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have lost their lives serving this country. We want to thank all of our seniors who have served. Both centers will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day.
Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the celebration of Older Americans Month (OAM). The theme for 2023 is “Aging Unbound.” This year’s theme offers an opportunity to explore a wide range of aging experiences and to promote the importance of enjoying independence and fulfillment by paving our own paths as we age.
Indoor Chair Volleyball has been a hit so far! It’s a great way to exercise and have fun at the same time. We have had such a big turnout that we have ordered more nets. We now have multiple games going on at the same time. If you want to try something new, we encourage you to give this activity a shot.
In this month’s issue, you will notice that the newsletter is a few pages longer. We have added more pages to include our monthly events calendar, a nutrition calendar, and more space for events and resources. We will always try our best to get you as much information as we can. Thank you for being an amazing community to work with.

Established in 1963, Older Americans Month (OAM) is celebrated every May. Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), OAM is a time for us to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of older Americans, highlight important trends, and strengthen our commitment to honoring our older citizens.
This year’s theme, Aging Unbound, offers an opportunity to explore a wide range of aging experiences and to promote the importance of enjoying independence and fulfillment by paving our own paths as we age.
This May, join us as we recognize the 60th anniversary of OAM and challenge the narrative on aging. Here are some ways we can all participate in Aging Unbound:
• Embrace the opportunity to change. Find a new passion, go on an adventure, and push boundaries by not letting age define your limits. Invite creativity and purpose into your life by trying new activities in your community to bring in more growth, joy, and energy.
• Explore the rewards of growing older. With age comes knowledge, which provides insight and confidence to understand and experience the world more deeply. Continue to grow that knowledge through reading, listening, classes, and creative activities.
• Stay engaged in your community. Everyone benefits when everyone is connected and involved. Stay active by volunteering, working, mentoring, participating in social clubs, and taking part in activities at your local senior center or elsewhere in the community.
• Form relationships. As an essential ingredient of well-being, relationships can enhance your quality of life by introducing new ideas and unique perspectives. Invest time with people to discover deeper connections with family, friends, and community members.
For more information, visit the official OAM website, follow ACL on Twitter and Facebook, and join the conversation using #OlderAmericansMonth.

HULA DANCING WITH SHARI
Have you ever been to Hawaii, or watched Hula dancers and thought that you might like to learn how to do the Hula? Na Kupuna Hula o Joslyn (the senior Hula dancers of Joslyn) meets every Thursday morning. Together in an atmosphere of friendship, fun, and Aloha spirit, they practice the art of Hula, the dance of Hawaii. Beginners meet at 9:45am to learn some basic step patterns. From 10:00am-10:30am they work on one of their easier dances. From 10:30am-11:30am, the intermediate/advanced class learns and practices more intricate, but beautiful dances. However, simply doing the Hula is not all the class offers. They also learn about good Hula form and style, the meaning of the dances, and about Hawaiian culture and tradition. E komo mai (come join us).

The menu writing specifications and requirements are developed by the County of Los Angeles Area Agency on Aging. This helps facilitate the menu writing process annually and encourages agencies and caterers to meet the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20202025. The menu is set for a six week cycle. The approved menu by the Los Angeles County dietitian assists us and our project dietitian in providing nutritious, appetizing, and high quality meals for our seniors.
Nourishing News: Optimize Your Health at Your Local Farmers’ Market
Enjoy a walk around your local Farmers Market. It is a great place to buy fresh herbs and produce. If you received Farmers Market vouchers when they were distributed at your Dining Center, you can redeem them at approved markets. It is also a good way to get some exercise and it helps support local farmers! Many fruits, vegetables and herbs are considered to be super foods. Farmers Markets are a great place to find a vast array of seasonal produce that is at its peak quality and ripeness. This fresh produce provides vital nutrients for healthy aging.
Get Your Colors!
Each color range of produce contains different compounds or phytonutrients. These compounds are what give fruits and vegetables their color, aroma and flavor.
Phytonutrients are rich in powerful antioxidants with research linking them to many health benefits.
To gain maximum benefits, choose a variety of colorful produce.
Get Your Daily Dose
Strive for at least 1 1/2 - 2 cups of fruit and 2-3 cups of vegetables daily.
If you’re diabetic, select more vegetables than fruit. When having fruit, pair with protein to minimize spikes in blood sugar.
Try berries with plain NF Greek yogurt or a small apple with 1 oz. LF string cheese.
Keep Produce Safe
CHOOSE WISELY AND HANDLE GENTLY - do not purchase bruised produce.
STORAGE - remove from plastic, store ripe fruit &vegetables separately in designated refrigerator drawers.
WASH HANDS - before and after handling fresh produce.
CLEAN - just prior to eating or preparation under clean, cool running water.
REFRIGERATE - always store produce in the refrigerator once it is cut.
