Joslyn Adult Center & Tuttle Senior Center News
MAY UPDATES
It is unbelievable to think that we are already into May and almost halfway through 2024! It seems like just yesterday we were getting together with friends and family to watch the ball-drop and welcoming in a new year! Since life can be fastpaced, it’s important to slow down and check in with yourself every once in a while...and what better time to do that than in Mental Health Awareness Month! May has been recognized as the month where it is crucial to be sure you are taking care of yourself. Make sure to go on walks, check in with loved ones, and do activities that make you feel relaxed. The most important and beneficial thing you can do for yourself is to be in healthy mind and spirit.
Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in May. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone. We also have a welcome in order for our new “Burbank 311” app, which will allow you to request services from bulky item pickup, updates on street repairs and so much more! If there is anyone out there missing daytrips - there may be a temporary fix for that travel want. The “On the Move” program holds trips every month right out of Joslyn. They take people to places such as museums, art exhibits, outlet malls and so much more. Be sure to check out their ad on the “Joslyn and Tuttle” events pages to learn more about how to join on their trips!
For the most up-to-date information on classes, events, and our monthly presentations, please visit Joslyn and Tuttle or check out our website.

How to Celebrate Mental Health Awareness
Observed every year in May, Mental Health Awareness Month is a crucial opportunity to prioritize mental health wellness in the workplace, social places and everyday life.
This website has compiled different ideas for Mental Health Awareness Month activities and tools for peoepl of all ages, including mental health activities, workshop ideas, mental health awareness ideas and mental health games and activities for adults.
Activities to Improve Mental Health
• Guided Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is a practice that involves paying attention to the present moment, without judgement or distraction. It is a form of meditation that is often used to reduce stress, improve focus and concentration, and enhance overall wellbeing.
There are a variety of mindfulness meditation techniques to choose from, including guided meditations, body scans, and walking meditations. These techniques can be practiced individually or in a group setting.
• Outdoor Activities
Being outdoors in nature has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and promote feelings of relaxation and calm. Some outdoor activities are hiking and gardening. Both can be used as outlets to not only disconnect from the real world, but also as therapeutic hobbies, allowing you to take a break from technology and enjoy nature.
• Music Therapy
Music therapy is a form of therapy that uses music to address a variety of mental health issues. It can be particularly effective for individuals with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Music therapy can take many forms, including listening to music, singing, playing instruments and improvising music.
• Creative Outlets
Establishing creative outlets can be a great way to reduce stress and improve mental health. Consider outlets such as drawing, painting, sculpting, journaling and any other actvities that allow you to express yourself.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Bingo
Thursdays at Joslyn 1:00-3:00pm
Come try your luck at Thursday’s afternoon Bingo! It’s $1 to play, but the prizes are worth the money! An assortment of candy, as well as various house necessities are available to win. This volunteer-led based game runs for two hours, allowing any and everyone to have a fair chance at winning. Not only do participants play the traditional way of winning based off of only one row or column or diagonal, but can win all sorts of new and fun ways. Whether you’re a seasoned Bingo player or just looking for a fun social day, come join Joslyn go-ers and have a fun and fair chance to win some prizes!
Ukulele
Thursdays at Joslyn 12:00-2:00pm
Joslyn Ukulele Group is a peer-led round robin jam session comprised of very friendly and forgiving players of all abilities. The emphasis is on fun, not perfection. We are not a teaching group, but any of us are happy to help newer players with any questions or tips and tricks to make playing more fun. We play songs that cross a variety of genres, from simple two or three chord songs to much more challenging material. Members are welcome to participate as much or as little as they want, even if it’s just to sing along.
Tuesdays & Fridays at Joslyn
T 9:30-10:00am I F 10:00-11:00am
Tai Chi is an exercise system developed in ancient China. Tai Chi’s low-impact style will benefit anyone’s health regardless of age or physical ability. Tai Chi enhances balance, agility, joint and muscle strength. Increased oxygen in the blood heals the body, restores the immune system, and decreases stress. It may also reduce chronic symptoms. Tai Chi’s slow motion form enhances memory and concentration. Instructors, Chris and John believe in ‘no pain, lots of gain.’ All are welcome. Wear comfortable clothing. This class meets outside on the corner of Griffith Park Ave and Clark Street; as long as weather is clear and comfortable. Otherwise, it meets inside of the Joslyn Center.

To enroll in the meal program, call the location from which you would like to pick up. After submitting an application, a start date will be given. Must be 60+ to qualify. Suggested $2 voluntary contribution.
We would like to inform the community what a wonderful job the Home Delivered Meals Program staff is doing. What they do is beyond delivering meals to patrons, they ensure clients recive nutritous meals, but that they are safe as well. When our staff stopped to deliver a meal to one of the HDM clients, He heard a scream for help coming from the clients house. The staff noticed the client on the floor and not only contacted the paramedics and the client’s family, but stayed until paramedics arrived. Fortunately no injuries were sustained but we are thankful to have such compassionate volunteers.
