November meeting has been postponed due to Thanksgiving, it will take place December 4th.

Agendas are posted 72 hours prior to the meeting and can be found on the bulletin board on the backside of City Hall and online at BurbankCA.gov

GIVING BACK FOR THANKSGIVING

Whether you’re looking to take a break from your family’s Thanksgiving dinner this year or you’d just like to give back to the community and make a difference, there are plenty of ways to impact the lives of others this Thanksgiving. From volunteering your time with charities to donating goods, there is no shortage of ways to make a difference this Thanksgiving. In the meantime, we encourage you to incorporate these simple steps into your own campaigns:

5 WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS THANKSGIVING

• Give Back to your Community

According to TalkPoverty.org, 46.7 million people in the U.S. are living in poverty, around 14.8 percent of the population. Additionally, 40 percent of food in the U.S. is thrown out each year, which is enough to feed 25 million Americans. Instead of feasting on a large meal this Thanksgiving, consider helping those who are unable to participate in a large Thanksgiving meal. Instead, give back to those in need and help to make their holiday memorable.

• Create Thanksgiving Baskets

To help those who are unable to afford a Thanksgiving dinner, put together a variety of Thanksgiving gift baskets to distribute locally. Local charities may be collecting baskets to donate to those in need. When creating your basket, consider adding the following items: a box of mashed potatoes, a box of stuffing with gravy packets, one can of corn, yams, cranberries and green beans, a pumpkin or apple pie, bags of tea or apple cider packets, a carton of shelfstable almond, rice or soy milk, canned soups, a box of cornbread mix, a warm fleece blanket, mittens, scarves, socks and hats, shampoo, soap, toilet paper, personal care products, gift cards to grocery stores and games such as UNO, Go Fish and Scrabble.

• Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen Charity

Thanksgiving is a popular time to serve food at a soup kitchen, so your time may be better spent on the weekend before or after Thanksgiving. Either way, you’ll want to call to make plans in advance since shifts do fill up quickly. Rather than serving food at a soup kitchen, other volunteer opportunities may be available such as helping to prepare food, pick up donations, or cleaning up after the meal. Call your local soup kitchen to see where they could use the most help.

• Hold a Food Drive

Holding a food drive allows you to help out without investing a bunch of your own money. Plus, you’ll end up collecting a variety of goods that you may not have thought of on your own. Check out the DoSomething.org website for information on holding a Supermarket Stakeout, which may be the perfect opportunity to collect donations for your food drive.

Tuesdays at Joslyn

12:00-4:00 pm

Panguingue, also known as Pan, is a Rummy-type game. This game is believed to originate from the Phillipines around the 19th century, however it was first described in America in 1905. This game shares many similarities to Rummy Tiles, so if you are a fan of Rummy Tiles, Pan may be another game for you. This is not an instructional group or a class where they teach you how to play Pan, this is for players that are familiar with the rules of the game. The game can be played with a range of players from 2-8 at a time. Here at Joslyn you don’t need to worry about bringing anyone, the Nardo Auditorium where Pan is held is always busy so you’ll have a team no matter what!

Nourishing News: Eating for Brain Health

Are you feeling forgetful? It could be due to lack of sleep, lifestyle, environmental factors, or even activity level. It may be a medical condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes. However, there is no doubt that a healthy diet plays a major role in brain health, which is vital to keeping your brain sharp.

Brain - Diet Connection

Studies link foods found in a Mediterranean-style diet (rich in vegetables, fish, legumes and healthy fats) to improved memory and alertness. Saturated and hydrogenated fats, typically found in processed foods, are associated with dementia, as these foods promote inflammation.

A surprising link, changes in your gut (intestinal tract) may also be linked to inflammation in the brain. The gut contains both good and bad bacteria. This is referred to as your microbiome. Foods that feed the good bacteria such as yogurt, legumes, cruciferous vegetables, whole grains and blueberries can reduce this inflammation.

The MIND Diet

This is a combination of a Mediterranean-style and the DASH diet (dietary approach to stop high blood pressure). In one study the MIND diet decreased the risk of cognitive decline by 35%. It focuses on foods that nourish and protect the brain. The foods include vegetables, especially leafy greens, berries, fish, poultry, legumes (beans), whole grains, olive oil and nuts.

• Leafy Greens - Have a salad and at least 1 other vegetable everyday

• Berries - Includes 5 servings per week (1 serving is 1/2c); especially blueberries

• Fish - Strive for at least one serving per week; focus on omega-3 rich sources

• Poultry - Include this protein at least twice a week; 1 serving is 3 ounces

• Beans - Have 1/2c every other day; chickpeas, kidney, lima and black beans

• Whole Greens - Include 3 servings daily; one serving equals 1 slice of whole grain bread or 1/2c of brown rice, oats, quinoa or other whole grain

• Olive Oil - Choose this fat over other oils and spreads; consume in moderation

Beyond Diet - Maintain Your Brain Health

When it comes to brain health, a healthy eating pattern plays a key role. In addition to healthy eating, you can support brain health and mental sharpness by:

• Challenging your brain with puzzles, games and reading

• Staying socially connected with family, friends and your community

• Keeping physically active, as this will increase blood flow to the brain

“Foods to Limit” for the MIND

There are five foods linked to impairing memory. These foods are high in saturated fats or sugar.

• Red Meat - less than 4 times per week

• Fried & Fast Food - less than 1 time per week

• Whole-Fat Cheese - less than 2 oz per week

• Butter/Margarine - less than 1 tablespoon per day

• Pastries & Sweets - fewer than 5 per week
