SEPTEMBER UPDATES

The start of September means the approach of the fall season, so be sure to enjoy the hopefully cooler weather and get out those fall decorations!

If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up for our annual Rock-a-Hula event happening Thursday, September 26th. This Hawaiin event will be full of music, dancing, games, prizes and food. If you’ve never been, it is a perfect way to kick off the end of summer! Be sure to register online, or talk to the staff at Joslyn’s front desk for information.

Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in September. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone. If there is anyone out there missing daytrips - there may be a temporary fix for that travel want. The “On the Move” program holds trips every month right out of Joslyn. They take a group of people to places such as museums, art exhibits, outlet malls and so much more. Be sure to check out their ad on the “Joslyn and Tuttle” events pages to learn more about how to join in on their trips!

For all our veterans and history buffs, we will be holding a special two-part book club, with author John Lanza, who will be discussing his books, based around actual events and people from both World War I and World War II. Part two will be happening the beginning of this month so be sure to check the flyers inside for more details on dates and times.

For the most up-to-date information on classes, events, and our monthly presentations, please visit Joslyn and Tuttle or check out our website.

How to Celebrate Self-Care Month

Sometimes you need to put yourself first in order to be the best version of yourself for others. September is the perfect month to practice prioritizing some “me” time, because it’s National Self Care Awareness Month. While it’s easy to get wrapped up in checking in on others, it’s important for your mental health to practice some self-care.

5 Ways to Promote Self-Care in Your Life

• Set Goals for Yourself

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and healthy self-care habits follow suit. Find something that makes you happy, and start by setting a small goal of doing that activity everyday. This could be something as simple as reading a book for 15 minutes or taking a walk around the block.

• Try Meditating

Life can be noisy. Many people go an entire day without complete silence. From radios in cars, to kids running around, there is constantly noise to distract our thoughts. Take time to center yourself through meditation. There are apps out there you can download to your phone to help guide your meditation journey.

• Check on a Friend

It’s easy to lose touch with friends in our lives - Think back, when was the last time you called somebody to simply catch up? Pick a friend you may be missing, and then pick up the phone and give them a call. It can be good for you AND them to touch base.

• Do Something Good for Others

Yes, National Self-Care Awareness Month is about your mental health, but did you know that doing something good for others can help boost endorphins? Even the smallest acts of kindness can provide a boost to your day. Try one of these small things to brighten somebody else’s day, and yours too!

- Pay for the person behind you the next time you’re in a drive-thru

- Bake something and share

- Pick up litter in your community

- Donate to your favorite organization

• Practice Saying ‘No’

The word “no” often gets a bad rap, but it could be vital for your mental health. Instead of devoting yourself to five separate projects where you’re stretched too thin, go all-in on the project that brings you the most joy. Everybody needs a break, and you should actively consider whether or not taking on something new will be good for your health and well-being.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Line Dancing

Saturdays at Joslyn

10:30-11:45am

The class will offer beginning line dances. The dances incorporate all of the basic line dance steps and are fun, and low impact. The music is to current and classic country songs as well as to some Billboard’s Top 100 Pop songs, and also some “oldies but goodies.” The goal is to have a variety of music. No partner is required. Line dancing is a great exercise and a lot of fun, so just wear comfortable shoes and a big smile. If you have any experience with dance, or just want to try it out, this class is a great starting point. The steps will be explained to you and you will be learning choreography every class session. This is a great way to exercise and have fun. Class is $7 ($5 with BSAC).

Calm Mind with Catherine

2nd & 4th Monday at Joslyn

10:15-11:00am

Meditation is a tool that is supportive of moving through life with compassion, peace, and a quietness of mind that is vital to our well-being. Meditation empowers us to move through life with joy and a quiet, calm mind that expresses the wisdom of our years. This program has an emphasized focus on moving through this new stage of life with calmness, peace and wisdom. This class is suitable for all levels of meditation and welcomes all that are interested in getting in touch with meditation, peace and being with oneself.

Tai Chi Chih

Tuesdays at Joslyn

2:00-3:00pm

Tai Chi Chih is not a martial art but rather a tool for self-healing. Softness, flow and effortless are guiding principles in this practice. The 19 movements and one pose are designed to stimulate, circulate and balance the vital energy of universal life force, referred to as Qi, which is inherent in all of us. Tai Chi Chih is often thought of as moving meditation because of the calming effect on the mind and emotions, and the release of tensions throughout the body. No experience is needed to participate in this class, as long as you are willing to embrace the culture of Tai Chi, this class is a perfect option for anyone.

Joslyn Center Presents:

Book Talk: From One War to Another

After spending four years writing a book about a B-25 bomber that went down over Italy, author John Lanza met a veteran airman, John Cooney, who went down in a B-24 bomber over Italy, and spent 10 years writing this book.

The book analyzes two world wars -- how they were started, mobilized, fought, supported, ended, and more. It explains the role of the United States in both wars with a focus on manpower in World War I and World War II.

Nourishing News - The Role of Sleep & Health

Although tossing-and-turning through the night is common, it should not be taken lightly. Getting a good night sleep is important for overall health. It may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, keep the brain healthy, and boost the immune system. Sleep is affected by many things including underlying medical issues and mental health; nutrition also plays a roll. Here are some ways that may help improve your sleep.

Sleep Basics 1 01

The amount of sleep depends on a number of factors, especially age. Although sleep needs vary among individuals, the general consensus is that adults should have 7 or more hours of sleep per night. Additional factors that affect sleep needs:

 Sleep Quality– it is just as important as the quantity of sleep. If your sleep is frequently interrupted, you’re not getting quality sleep.

 Sleep Deprivation - sleep needs increase if you are sleep deprived. Getting less than seven (7) hours of sleep on a regular basis has been linked to poor health, including weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and depression.

N eed Better Sleep?

Although there is no silver bullet that will guarantee a good night’s sleep, there are some foods & beverages that may help.

 Hot Tea– tea made from valerian, chamomile and other non-caffeinated options. Tea is a natural tranquilizer and may improve the quality of sleep.

 Nighttime Milk– a warm glass of milk, as it contains tryptophan, an amino acid linked to better sleep. If you are lactose intolerant try lactose-free milk.

 Poultry– rich in tryptophan that can induce feelings of sleepiness.

 Fish– rich in vitamin B6, with salmon, tuna and halibut having the most. B6 makes melatonin, referred to as a sleep hormone.

 Kiwi– a recent study suggested that this fruit can impact sleep, enhancing the duration and quality.

 Nuts– walnuts, pistachios, cashews and almonds contain magnesium, zinc and melatonin, helpful to sleep.

 Fresh Herbs such as basil can have a calming effect.

The Bottom Line These foods & behaviors may help sleep, however, there is no substitute for a healthy eating pattern. Focus on a variety of colorful vegetables & fruits, whole grains, lean protein, reduced fat dairy, and healthy fats. Choosing foods from the food groups, along with an active lifestyle are vital to overall health. Enhancing a healthy eating pattern with these sleep-inducing foods and behavior changes may reduce the restless nights and turn into “sweet dreams”!

Still Can’t Sleep?

Dietary patterns and lifestyle can also impact sleep. Try making small behavior changes such as:

 Limit caffeine, especially in the afternoon or evening.

 Make dinner your lightest meal. Minimize spicy or rich foods.

 Stop eating 2-hrs prior to bedtime.

 Avoid alcohol, especially at night.

 If you nap, make it earlier in the day, limit to 20-30 minutes.

 Be physically active, however, avoid exercise 4-hours before bed.

 Limit screen time, especially in bed.

 Develop a sleep routine by going to bed at the same time each night.
