LEAVING A LEGACY OF GIVING Dr. Travis Burkett of Drumright Dental takes giving back to the next level
3D PRINTING HOW CAN IT BENEFIT YOUR DENTAL PRACTICE?
BURKHART’S PROVEN SOLUTIONS CENTER TESTING DENTAL EQUIPMENT TO SERVE YOU BETTER
WHEN YOUR EQUIPMENT WORKS TOGETHER EFFICIENTLY, SO DOES YOUR TEAM. Dental equipment is the core of the operatory. And with that, it’s important to consider how comfort, aesthetics, and efficiency come into play. Everything about your operatory setup affects the workflow, physical comfort and mood of you and your team, which in the end, impacts productivity. One solution does not fit all. Your operatory should reflect the way you work, and the processes you follow. So, as you design your treatment rooms, keep these three important attributes in mind. And remember, a few small adjustments in the vital areas of ergonomics, environment and workflow, can impact your bottom line—and make for a happy staff.
WORKFLOW Purposeful. Intuitive. Efficient. With integrated equipment and task-based furniture design, your team can move intuitively and seamlessly between procedures.
ERGONOMICS
ENVIRONMENT
Moveable. Adjustable. Comfortable. When everything is easy to position and within reach, you can minimize the toll on your body, and maximize your time out of the office.
Inviting. Modern. Calm. An aesthetically pleasing office that reflects your level of professionalism and care instills confidence in patients, and keeps dental staff productive. That’s practice perfected.

Who Is This Guy?
Dr. Travis D. Burkett grew up in Drumright, Oklahoma. His parents are both coaches and teachers. Sports had a strong impact on him. He especially loves football and sees a lot of parallels between football and everyday life. “Just like in football, in everyday life, you’re expected to get knocked down and get back up,” he says. He attended Drumright High School and graduated from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics at Central Tech in 1999. He graduated as a Chancellor’s Scholar from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor of science education in kinesiology in 2003. He completed his doctor of dental surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 2007. Dr. Burkett is an avid Arkansas Razorback fan. He’s an active member of the Arkansas Alumni Association and serves on the Provost’s Executive Advisory Board. Dr. Burkett serves on the board of directors for Special Olympics Oklahoma and for EPIC Charter Schools. He’s also the Clinical Director for Special Smiles, a program of Special Olympics Oklahoma.

Doing Jobs Nobody Wanted
Drumright Dental Center opened in 1992. Dr. Burkett started working there when he was 16—doing jobs nobody else wanted, he says. He came back in 2007 as a dentist and bought the practice from Dr. Robert H. Melton in 2008. The practice has six doctors and a team of 33 in tiny Drumright, Oklahoma: population 2,900.
Bigger & Better
When the current facility was built in 2005, Drumright Dental Center had six patient chairs. It expanded to nine chairs in 2009. Construction began in July of 2018 expanding to include fifteen chairs. The practice averages 210 new patients a month and revenues grew to nearly $5 million in 2017. The Drumright Dental Center team treats adults and children, has 32,000 patients of record and draws patients from a 100-mile radius.
Dedicated to Those with Disabilities: 15 Minutes of Hugs
Dr. Burkett has continued and expanded on the tradition of giving back started by Dr. Melton. “We are one of the few practices in Oklahoma that makes treating special needs patients a priority. It’s part of our mission statement,” says Dr. Burkett. “Our goal is to make sure every special needs patient is seen by a dentist in Oklahoma.” It not only takes compassion and understanding to care for special needs patients, but it may take longer to treat them, he explains. “Sometimes for those with special needs, it takes 10-15 minutes of hugs before you start. We are invested in spending this time with our special needs patients. The number of providers on our team allows us to provide quality care and stay on time with our schedule.”
Special Olympics: A Perfect Partnership
Every year, Drumright Dental Center shuts their office down for two days and sends their team to the Special Olympics Oklahoma Summer Games to run its Special Smiles program. Dr. Burkett is Clinical Director for Special
Smiles which offers dental exams, health education, prevention services, and refers athletes to potential sources of treatment and follow-up care. Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions to over 5 million athletes in 174 countries.
Loving & Caring for Those with Disabilities
“Dr. Burkett and his staff are amazing with our Special Olympics athletes in the love and care they show them,” says Derek Cain, Vice President of Development & Marketing, Special Olympics Oklahoma. “Drumright Dental Center has made individuals with

intellectual disabilities a top priority,” he adds. “They specialize in serving them and realize our Special Olympics athletes are no different from you and me and deserve quality health care.” The thing is, besides volunteering at Special Olympics, the Drumright team holds fundraisers such as an annual flag football tournament to raise money for the organization. “Drumright Dental Center has become one of Special Olympics Oklahoma’s top donors,” says Cain.
Kicking Kids’ Pain to the Curb
Drumright Dental Center sends 8-12 team members on mission trips to Central or South America every year. They provide free dental services to CATALYST MAGAZINE // FALL/WINTER, 2018 // 11
What Makes Drumright Dental Center Tick?
Heavily influenced by sports growing up, Dr. Burkett believes in teamwork and setting ambitious goals. Seriously. Drumright Hygienist Kara Morris, RDH, puts it, “The main thing I’ve learned this year is that it doesn’t matter how high your goals are set. If you set them high enough, even if you don’t reach your goals, you’re going to do way better than you ever thought possible.”
The Drumright Dental Center practice goals are to: 1. Have every special needs patient in Oklahoma seen by a dentist 2. Be the biggest Special Olympics donor 3. Double everyone’s salary 4. Get everyone out of all personal debt

community organizations and local schools with scholarships, sponsorships and dental screenings. On top of that, they bought Drumright High School its first activity bus.
They recently treated 386 patients in Morazán, Honduras, at a mountain-top school for special needs students. The team slept on the floor with no daily guarantee of running water or electricity. Putting their own comfort aside, and working in conditions unfamiliar, they extracted infected teeth and were able to reduce or eliminate patients’ pain that may have persisted for months. Without the dedication of the Drumright Dental Center team, these Hondurans may not have experienced relief of pain and hope of better days.
“Whether it’s raising money for multiple charitable organizations, taking mission trips abroad, or having a ‘free dental day’ for the Drumright community,” says Jason, “Dr. Burkett (and his team) have raised the bar on what it means to be a pillar of the community.”
Love Thy Neighbor
Eight years ago, Drumright Hygienist Cynthia Bassham, RDH, couldn’t attend one of their annual mission trips. Her idea: could we do a one-day mission trip locally? Dr. Burkett said yes, put her in charge, and Love Thy Neighbor was born. It’s now an annual Drumright Dental Center event that provides free dental services to those who have no access to dental care. In this year’s event, the team provided 58 full or partial dentures to veterans and produced over $200,000 of free dentistry to the people who needed and deserved it the most. “Our team grew that day and learned so much about the veterans we saw,” says Drumright Director of Operations Barrett Shupe, “and it was awesome to hear their stories.”
On Top of the Heap
Burkhart Account Manager Jason Corbin has worked with Drumright Dental Center and seen the practice flourish. “It’s been amazing to watch them grow into one of the most successful and well-run dental practices in Oklahoma over the past 20 years. While there are multiple reasons for their success, I believe the commitment to their community is what stands out,” he says. Besides the Drumright team helping patients at Special Olympics, through their mission trips and Love Thy Neighbor project, they support other

Barrett with Drumright Dental Center looks forward to continued growth and community impact. “I know we can continue to grow and be the best versions of ourselves every day. We strive to impact those we come in contact with in a positive way.”
Anyone Can Make a Difference
What’s been significant to the Drumright Dental Center team about their community efforts? “Our increased involvement with Special Olympics and going on mission trips has given our staff a greater appreciation of what we have,” says Dr. Burkett. “These types of outreach show that anyone can make a difference in the world. You just have to be willing to take the first step.”
Just Do One Thing
How would Dr. Burkett encourage other doctors to be more involved in giving back to their communities? “People may think they don’t have the time or money to give back,” he says. “I would encourage other dentists to just do one thing, start small, and see how they feel after. I guarantee they will gain more than they give and learn something about themselves. You can’t put a price tag on that.”

With all the choices for consumer devices such as desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets, have you ever purchased anything you couldn’t figure out how to integrate with your other devices, systems or software? Have you ever bought equipment for your practice that was difficult to get to work with your practice management or other software? BY DENISE PLOOF, PHOTOS BY MATT ELLIS

Our Proven Solution Center staff works on the Planmeca PlanMill 40 S Burkhart recognized the impact technology integration was having on our clients and their practices. In some cases, the impact was positive, while other cases were disruptive. We realized helping our clients make more informed equipment purchase decisions and integrating technology successfully would not only decrease their frustration, but reduce their downtime and support their success. Burkhart created a digital equipment testing and evaluation center in its Tacoma, Washington Corporate Office called the Proven Solutions Center. In partnership with manufacturers, we test and evaluate digital dental equipment using key performance indicators.
Developing Solutions Center Goals to Assist Clients In developing the Proven Solutions Center, Burkhart wanted to accomplish three goals to assist clients: 1. Determine whether certain types of equipment integrated well with other equipment and/or software 2. Develop the knowledge and skills of Burkhart associates to be able to provide better client service 3. Eventually work with manufacturers to develop a remote platform to resolve clients’ equipment issues in a more timely and cost-effective manner
Helping Clients Make More Informed Decisions Another client benefit of Proven Solutions Center testing is providing our clients with more informed product purchases. “The Proven

Solutions Center serves as a quality assurance function that supports our clients to ensure the quality and consistency of dental equipment we offer,” says Michael Norton, Burkhart’s Director of Equipment and Technology Sales. “We expect this will make practices more efficient, profitable and help doctors deliver a better patient experience,” he adds. “Over the last couple years, the Proven Solutions Center has tested, evaluated and supported the launch of new technology products, as well as certified existing technology solutions, to ensure our clients have a positive practice experience with their technology purchase,” says Michael. Since its inception, the Proven Solutions Center has tested and evaluated digital equipment and technology for a variety of products such as, 3D cone beams, CAD/CAM systems, air compressors, sterilizers and 3D printers.

PRODUCT EXAMPLES Burkhart has partnered with a handful of manufacturers to test their products. Evaluation typically takes 3-6 months. Examples of manufacturers with products that have been certified include: Planmeca (Emerald Scanner and PlanMill 40 S), Kavo Kerr (OP300 Panoramic CBCT), 3M (True Definition Scanner), PreXion (3D Excelsior CBCT), and SciCan (Statim G4).
Planmeca Emerald Scanner being tested “Not only do we test manufacturers’ equipment for our clients, but we also evaluate the equipment software and occasionally test how the software interfaces with other third-party software. We even determine what kind of support the manufacturers provide for a specific product,” says Chuck Greenfield, Corporate Service Support Manager. “We call them with product questions because we want to make sure there is a good support structure in place for our clients.”
Creating “Consumer Reports” on Products Director of Technical Services, Shannon Bruil, likens the Proven Solutions Center to providing internal “Consumer Reports.” “To help our clients, we have taken the “Consumer Report” concept and applied it to our test center. We have come up with report cards on various products and how they perform.”
Helping Clients Avoid Costly Downtime “We are excited to be working with manufacturers who are developing software and embedded sensors for their equipment to communicate and exchange data through the internet,” says Michael. Burkhart sees the opportunity to eventually serve clients remotely as the technology develops. “With this rapidly growing technology, we want to be able to better service equipment in a more predicted way for our clients. This will enable our service technicians to consistently show up with the right part at the right time which will help our clients avoid costly and disruptive downtime.”
Providing an “Exceptional Client Experience” to Support Client Success One of Burkhart’s goals is to consistently provide an “Exceptional Client Experience” which means consistently delivering service that is impactful and valuable to our clients. We will continue to expand our reach with testing and evaluating equipment and technology our clients purchase to help them make more informed purchase decisions that will ultimately support their continued success. 18 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY
Below is a quote from one of Burkhart’s manufacturers who has used the PSC: “My experience working with the Burkhart team at the Proven Solutions Center was nothing short of amazing. As a manufacturer, we worked with the PSC to make sure our product met Burkhart’s expectations so there are no surprises down the road for our future mutual customers. The whole process of getting our product to the PSC, setting it up, evaluating and testing with Burkhart was a breeze. During the process, we learned what they liked and received suggestions as to what the market needs and wants. As a result, we were able to collaborate and work with Burkhart to make our product that much better and ready to launch.” Keith Huang Vice President, Operations, PreXion, Inc.
MAKING FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT:
Tips for Dental Practice Design SUBMITTED BY PELTON & CRANE
When it comes to a dental practice, first impressions matter. A patient’s first impression often determines what they think about the level of care they will receive and can dictate whether or not they decide to return to your office. If you are in the midst of planning or thinking about building or remodeling your practice, its important to be involved early. No one knows more about your philosophies and goals than you do. Being engaged at the start of your project helps to ensure you are communicating and delivering the right message to your patients. Pelton & Crane has been working with dentists for over a century to help them focus on comfortable patient care— and we’ve rounded up some tips from our partners to help guide you through your new office build.
Peer Tip 1
“ The surroundings of the office matter. Easy access―to find, to get in, to park― is critical. Making sure that the view out the operatory window isn’t a neighbor’s yard or parking lot.” —Dr. Travis Coulter
Take some time to self-reflect and ask the following questions as you prepare to start your new practice or renovation project: What kind of dentist am I? What sort of image do I want to portray? Does my office really reflect my philosophy as a dentist? Try and see things from your patient’s perspective- this is especially important for new patients. Remember, they are not your patients yet. Therefore, it is very important to be mindful of their entire experience, from the moment they arrive and enter your office to the time their appointment is over and they depart.
20 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY
Peer Tip 2
Peer Tip 3
“ I’d been in an older office and I know from the outset that wouldn’t maintain the majority of the equipment. The office was very closed in, we’d outgrown it, and the surroundings didn’t fit the personality of our practice. In the new office, we wanted an environment that not only reflected that personality, but made a statement about our quality care.”
“ Utilize your network and take the time to go through other new dental offices. Its so easy to say, “I’m going to do it my way” and then look through some magazines, but there is no substitute for walk-throughs. I went through 4 or 5 practices and I would have gone through 5 more. Not only will you get great ideas, but you’ll learn a lot about what to do and not to do in the process.”
—Dr. Jason Baker Its easy to get caught up in the details- but first and foremost, you have to ensure the flow and functionality of the office is going to work best for your team and office needs. Is the waiting room open and inviting, but updated and easy to navigate? Are the operatories in close proximity to the lab or sterilization center so my staff isn’t wasting time traveling from one area to the next during procedures? Do I have enough space to support expanding my practice later on as I grow? Questions like these are often missed when looking through a photo gallery to determine the look and feel of your new office, so it’s important to consider how your office is actually going to be used, not just how it looks.
—Dr. Brian Francey An efficient workflow, smart utilization of space, and thoughtful design can not only help make a lasting impression, but create a productive and enjoyable space for both your patients and your staff for years to come. There are endless opportunities to making a great first impression with your dental office design.

3D PRINTING DENTISTRY
24 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY
You may be aware 3D printing is available for dentistry. Over the last few years clinical applications for 3D printing have increased and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Here are three key questions to help you understand the impact 3D printing is having on dentistry. BY MICHAEL NORTON | PHOTOS BY MATT ELLIS
1. What are the clinical possibilities with 3D printing?
DLP BUILD PLATFORM
The following are some of the key clinical applications of 3D printing:
• • • • • • • •
Highly Accurate Dental and Orthodontic Models Castable Crowns, Bridges and Partial Denture Frameworks Direct Crowns & Bridges and Partial Denture Frameworks Bite Splints Night Guards Indirect Bonding Trays Surgical Drill Guides Denture Bases
UV LIGHT CURABLE RESIN
PROJECTED UV LIGHT
PROJECTOR
2. Are there different types of 3D printers?
There are a wide variety of 3D printers on the market, however, the two most common types are SLA and DLP. Each of these technologies use light, but differently, to turn liquid resin into a solid object. Stereolithography (SLA): a technique for creating threedimensional objects. A computer-controlled moving laser beam is used to build up the required structure, layer by layer, from a liquid polymer that hardens on contact with laser light.
SLA BUILD PLATFORM
Digital Light Processing (DLP): a technique for creating threedimensional objects. A projector projects different layers as a flat image, image-layer by image-layer, from a liquid resin that hardens.
UV LIGHT CURABLE RESIN
Both technologies offer a wide selection of 3D print materials for various applications. However, because DLP prints each image layer-by-layer, it has a faster print time.
LASER BEAM
LASER SOURCE
3. What is the cost of ownership with 3D printing?
The price for both SLA and DLP can vary from $4,000– $20,000+, depending on the size and quality you’re looking for. What is more important than the price, is calculating the cost of ownership. Even though some 3D printers may be priced higher, over several months, they can actually cost you less. When selecting a 3D printer, you should consider the following costs: Materials: Broad selections, cost, open/close (only accepts manufacturer print resins and or cartridges) Support: Is there a cost, loaner program, local representation Warranty: Duration, availability of extended warranty

Digital Dentistry, 3D Printing, and the Whole New World SUBMITTED BY SPRINTRAY
T
he widespread proliferation of dental 3D scanners and CAD/CAM treatment planning software has contributed to improved patient experience in dentistry. Broadly conceived, digital dentistry consists of these two innovations as they exist in clinics and labs. But recent currents in the world of dentistry have argued that 3D printers can further improve this paradigm, closing the loop by offering affordable fabrication. 3D printing, in other words, offers an output step to the data capture and design component of digital dentistry via the printed dental appliance. But additive manufacturing is a vast market. 3D printer cost is as low as $500 and as high as $100,000. Industries across the world are adopting 3D printing into their workflows. In 2018, everything from consumer sneakers to professional-level race cars will have 3D printed parts. With a technology that penetrates so many industries, it can be difficult to parse which features and technologies are needed in a dental clinic or lab.
28 // BURKHART DENTAL SUPPLY
Why Dental 3D Printing is Unique A dental 3D printer has a specific, pre-defined use case: printing functional dental appliances such as clear aligners, monolithic dentures, and nightguards. This is a crucial difference between the way clinics will use 3D printers and the way they’re used in most other industries: dentists produce final, certified products, not just prototypes and models. This means that printed items need to be ready for final delivery with minimal post-processing and maximum polish. For dental clinics and labs, it’s about more than just the cost of a 3D printer.
There are many desktop 3D printers on the market that are capable of fabricating beautiful-looking parts. They’ll often feature printed dental models on their websites to showcase their dental chops. Many printers, especially in the range of $5000 and less, claim to be valuable for dentists but cannot create certified, final printed dental appliances. Dental models are useful in creating clear-aligners, but a dental 3D printer should also have the capability to use functional resins to produce applications such as indirect bonding trays, denture bases, and nightguards. There are very few desktop printers that can do this.
Dental Printing Non-Negotiables Because dentists produce deliverables, their needs are unique from most 3D printing customers. These particular circumstances boil down to three non-negotiable principles:
1. FINAL APPLIANCE PRINTING A piece of technology belongs in a dental clinic or lab only if it improves the dental workflow or expands the capabilities of its practice. Many printers can fabricate dental models and surgical guides, but the ability to print final appliances such as IBT, denture bases, crowns, bridges, and nightguards come from the ability to use biocompatible, certified resins. If your 3D printer can’t use certified functional dental resins to fabricate a printed, final dental appliance that is ready for placement, then it is not a dental 3D printer.
2. COST Desktop 3D printing has become affordable in the last five years, but the cost of a printer can only be justified for a lab or practice if it demonstrates a return on investment. Certain printers are advertised as being built for the dental industry but have extremely limited applications due to aforementioned resin limitations. When considering 3D printer cost, make sure to understand the full scope of the printer’s fabrication
ecosystem so that you aren’t limited to just a few applications. A broad application range means that your printer can grow along with your practice, and your investment will continue to return for a long time.
3. SUPPORT Additive manufacturing has reached the mainstream, but even the best pieces of consumer technology still require support. The best 3D printers are those that exist in a support ecosystem specifically for dentistry. An expert in 3D printing who knows nothing about denture bases is going to have a hard time understanding the nuances of prosthodontic requirements for parts in terms of aesthetics and fit. Don’t sit in the general support queue, trying to explain your needs to someone whose primary interest is casting 3D printed jewelry.
The Current Landscape of Dental 3D Printing 3D printing in dentistry can be bucketed into two major categories. On one hand are the industrial-grade, high-throughput machines that feature excellent capacity and good quality. While these machines are excellent choices for dental labs that create dozens of appliances per day, their high upfront cost, large size, and maintenance requirements mean that they’re not a practical solution for the in-office printing of dental appliances.
They are a great companion in a high-volume lab, but at a clinical level, the industrial 3D printer cost is too great for single practices involved in digital dentistry. Desktop 3D printers, on the other hand, feature excellent quality at a significantly reduced price point and are presented in a much more manageable size: no larger than your average inkjet paper printer. Desktop printers are just as versatile as their larger counterparts but tend to feature smaller build platforms and have lower overall throughput. For the multi-disciplinary general practitioner, oral surgeon, practicing prosthodontist or orthodontist, this kind of desktop dental 3D printer with good throughput will supply more than enough capacity.
The Upshot: the 3D Printed Dental Appliance Many of the most popular desktop 3D printers on the market today are trying to cash in on the dental market boom. As more dentists put 3D printing into their offices, they follow the money into dental without having products to back it up. While printing dental models and surgical guides are both useful in-office solutions, most desktop printers on the market today cannot print final dental appliances.
Because dentists produce deliverables, their needs are unique from most 3D printing customers.

When closing the production gap in your digital dentistry practice, consider that your in-office solution is an investment.
Many companies are scrambling to add certified dental resin capabilities to their current 3D printer lineup. The simple fact of the matter is that 3D printing in dentistry is exploding. The marketing machines do their jobs well: a cursory look at the most popular printers will give you the impression that any of their machines will dramatically improve your dental workflow. But they lack the ability to print final dental appliances such as dentures, crowns, bridges, and indirect bonding trays. It’s important to look beyond just the individual up-front 3D printer cost, because if it can’t produce a final printed dental appliance with certified biocompatible resin, it isn’t a dental printer.
The Final Word There are a dizzying number of 3D printers on the market that claim to be built for dentistry. While many of these models can print a limited selection of dental applications such as die models, they severely limit your ability to offer expanded treatment. There are, in the same price range, desktop 3D printers that are designed from the ground-up for use in dental clinics and labs. These printers, such as our dental 3D printer MoonRay, are capable of utilizing functional, certified dental resins to produce not just models but final products in the form of the printed dental appliance. Indirect bonding trays, denture bases, crowns and bridges, these are just a few of the additional offerings made possible by printer that uses an open certified resin system for dental. When closing the production gap in your digital dentistry practice, consider that your in-office solution is an investment. As such, you need not just the necessary product for now, but also the capabilities and support to allow it to grow with you into the future. SprintRay’s dental support team, our certified biocompatible resins, and our highROI products are built for the next 100 years of dentistry.

Precision in Caries Detection
W
hen it comes to offering the best dental care for your patients, the first step is effective diagnosis. Caries detection has historically relied on three key methods: through visual inspection, explorer, and radiographs. Times have changed. Technology today has advanced to where innovative tools, such as the DEXIS CariVu, can now allow dentists to “see through” a tooth’s structure using transillumination technology and no ionizing radiation. If you have been dismissing the need to add CariVu to your practice’s workflow, here are 5 reasons you should reconsider your current stance. CariVu™ uses no ionizing radiation. CariVu is a diagnostic aid for the detection of open or incipient carious lesions above the gingiva and for monitoring the progress of such lesions. Proximal dentin lesions represented in CariVu images correlate to the actual condition in the tooth with 99% accuracy.
