Burkhart Gives Back

Donating Supplies to Free Dental Clinic

The Fort Bend Dental Academy recently partnered with The Academy of Dental and Medical Anesthesia (ADMA) to run a free dental clinic that serves individuals with special needs and/or financial hardships . Over the course of the week-long event, the team treated more than 65 patients . Burkhart was proud to donate supplies to this cause

“A huge and special thanks to Dr Adler, Dr Jabbour, and Dr Shen for seeing these patients! And a special thanks to Burkhart who donated free supplies to utilize for the free clinic,” Fort Bend Dental Academy said in a statement “This week could not have been successful without you all!”

Supporting Veterans in Annual Charity Event

Texas-based Dr . Stan Lowrance recently hosted his annual dental charity event for Veterans in the community . The Burkhart Dallas branch donated supplies and rental equipment for the day and two volunteers (Account Manager Colby Eldredge and Service Technician Dustin Kile) The office served more than 100 Veterans!

James Clair Equipment Specialist

Receives DISIPC Certification

Texas-based Burkhart Equipment Specialist James Clair is the 12th person in the U.S. to complete the Dental Industry Specialist in Infection Prevention & Control (DISIPC) certification program.

The dental industry is all James Clair has ever really known Shortly after graduating high school, Clair joined the Navy in 1985 and soon started working as a dental assistant Over time, Clair worked as a dental repair technician, and then as a salesman Now, Clair serves as a Burkhart Dental Supply Equipment Specialist in Texas .

“I feel like I’ve done a bit of everything,” Clair chuckled . Clair joined Burkhart in June 2022 As an equipment specialist, Clair said his job is to help doctors navigate an overwhelming amount of information on equipment .

“I feel like my job is to help them navigate and pick out the equipment that’s right for them, not necessarily what’s right for my pocket,” Clair said . “It’s a lot of little facets that we can do for the doctors to help them ease their stress level ”

Though Clair has spent nearly 40 years developing his dental equipment expertise, he decided to apply for the Dental Industry Specialist in Infection Prevention and Control (DISIPC) certification program .

The DISIPC certification is the first and only infection control certification specifically for dental sales and practice management professionals, according to a Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) press release . Those who hold DISIPC certification have proven their knowledge of CDC guidelines, OSHA standards and regulations, and concepts related to the prevention of disease transmission in the dental office

Clair encourages others to complete the DISIPC certification program so they can continue to help doctors improve their offices .

“My philosophy is, anytime you’re doing anything like this, the more you know the better . But this will elevate them in the eyes of the doctor because now it makes them an expert,” Clair said . “You actually have a certain certification that you can actually show them that you are an expert, and you couldn’t have gotten that certification unless you knew the information .

DANB CEO Laura Skarnulis said in the press release

“DISIPC certified individuals have completed indepth education and passed a rigorous exam, which demonstrates their knowledge and helps ensure that all involved in patient care are protected . ”

Clair was the 12th person to complete the program in June 2022 .

“When you’ve been around the business long enough, there’s a lot of people out there that claim to be an expert in infection control and all this stuff,” Clair said “In reality, all they really did was pick up a few things here and there and maybe read some stuff on the internet or something like that ”

Clair added that this certification program allowed some legitimacy to those who are actually experts in infection prevention and control .

The Dental Infection Control Education & Certification is the first and only infection control certification specifically for dental sales and practice management professionals .

Dr . Brett Francis has led Dental Designs of Stroud since 2013 — a four-op practice he and his team soon outgrew

.

In order to best serve the growing community, he realized a remodel wasn’t going to work . He purchased land and began planning for a new build .

We reached out to Dr . Francis and Burkhart Equipment Specialist Brandon Saas to learn more about the project

Tell us about the Dental Designs of Stroud build. What inspired it?

BF: We had been in our previous building since I bought the practice in 2013 . With only four ops trying to get patients scheduled in a timely manner was a major problem Patients would be calling to be seen and we would literally have no place to put them for weeks at a time . I looked at doing a remodel and adding on to my previous space but as the practice grew, I knew my only real option was to buy land and build from scratch .

BS: Dr . Francis reached out and asked if I would be willing to help him with his new office He had a very clear vision of what he wanted and was extremely decisive . We quickly met with his builder and hashed out the details related to the floor plan and flow of the office . With some minor tweaks and suggestions, it only took two meetings for us to nail down his final floor plan .

Was there anything that made this project unique? How has the new build changed the practice?

BS: Dr . Francis had a very specific look he was going for . He spent years researching different office builds, taking notes of things he liked and didn’t like, as well as suggestions over the years from colleagues . Dr . Francis has had experience in working with multipractice organizations as well as multiple ownership practices Early on in his career, he thought owning multiple offices was what he wanted After diving in headfirst, he realized that he was really good at owning one practice and investing all of his time and energy into making that one practice extremely successful . That focus and drive manifested into the new office . We designed a space that would accommodate every procedure needed and have enough room for Dr . Francis to bring on one or two new associate dentists He went from a small four-op practice to a 10-op (nine treatment rooms and one surgical room) Dr . Francis’ practice is in the rural town of Stroud, OK . He is roughly an hour from a major city . In his new office, he can offer services to thousands of people from multiple small communicates that would otherwise have to drive an hour or more . This state-of-the-art facility is not only a dream for Dr . Francis but a solution for the rural towns of Oklahoma that need cutting-edge dental care

It’s allowed me to bring on a full-time associate doctor as well as the potential to expand the hygiene department . We were able to more than double the size of our lab which allowed us to add more mills and scanners I love coming to work in this office and I’m sure the whole team appreciates coming to a nice place to work every day .

What were some of the project’s biggest challenges? What was rewarding about this project?

BS: The biggest challenge was for all of us to learn how to navigate the construction progress and decisions during the shutdown due to COVID-19 This enhanced the need to over-communicate . Supply chain issues were another big obstacle that we had to learn to adapt to Thankfully Dr . Francis chose a well-known builder whom we have a wonderful relationship with . Paul Brudzinski with Design One Building Solutions has a wonderful reputation and a long list of quality

The most rewarding part of this project was a small moment . I was there with the service team helping with the installation Dr Francis and his entire team were there at that time I was by myself in an op when he walked in . He said, “Well, what do you think?” I said, “Brett, this project exceeded everything I thought it would be .” The smile and excitement that I saw on his face was an example of why I love what I do Our entire service team worked hours to ensure everything was just right for opening day They worked around the clock to get this office open, and we made it happen!

What would you say to other doctors/offices who are considering a rebuild?

BF: Don’t rush it . I spent a lot of time studying floor plans and layouts of offices to figure out how I wanted the office to flow and operate for maximum efficiency . Work with a reputable builder, dental company, and designer If your goal is to wow your patients, then these are key components . If you are on the fence about building, I say go for it! I couldn’t be more excited about the future of my practice .

New Glass Pin Transforms Tooth Repair

Utah-based Dr. Jeremy Ellis invented the Dental Glass Pin — a fiber optic glass pin for chipped and broken tooth repair.

Dr Jeremy Ellis has been practicing dentistry for 23 years Throughout his career, he’s completed a variety of different tooth repairs . When it comes to anterior repairs, he was frustrated by the difficult traditional treatment process and its poor long-term outcomes

“An idea came as I was helping my daughter with a science project using fiber optics connected to a light source to make an amazing jellyfish,” Ellis said “The thought came to me, ‘Could I use the fibers as a reinforcement like a rebar in concrete?’ I started placing fiber optics in extracted teeth and then bonding composite to the fibers . ”

The results were successful, and they led to the creation of the Dental Glass Pin — a cylinder of fiber optic glass with similar properties to the tooth It bends and flexes with the tooth, yet has properties

Almost 13 years ago, Ellis started to evaluate the ways to repair an anterior chip . Traditional solutions include making grooves, channels, pits, and using titanium pins in adhesive restorations . The best restoration has both chemical and mechanical properties, he said, but the difficulty with anterior teeth is that all adhesives have great compressional strength but poor sheer resistance To anchor the filling to the tooth, the stress must change to compressional forces with mechanical retention .

Ellis began by assessing the molecular structure of the tooth and all associated anatomy and realized a device that would have similar properties of the tooth would work best .
