After two years of being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seattle/King County Clinic is scheduled to return April 27-30 at Seattle Center .
Seattle/King County Clinic is a volunteer-driven, free health clinic that occurs for four days each year at Seattle Center. The Clinic welcomes anyone in the region who struggles to access and/or afford health care .
“We know it has been a long time coming and we are excited to return to full operation providing care to people in our community who struggle to access
and/or afford healthcare,” Julia Colson, Project Director at Seattle Center and Seattle/King County Clinic, said .
Since 2014, Seattle/King County Clinic has served 24,000 patients, administered more than $20 million in direct services, and worked with 23,000 volunteers .

Nitrile gloves are a daily necessity in any medical environment. However, many medical professionals have struggled to fulfill their supply since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic .
Burkhart Dental Supply was able to donate 15 pallets of nitrile gloves — totaling more than 20,000 pounds — to Baja Bridges, a network of volunteers who provide necessary fire, EMT, and educational supplies to agencies and civil organizations in Baja, Mexico .
Tawni Allen, Burkhart’s Private Label Coordinator, reached out to longtime friend and volunteer Nicole Cougher and asked if she knew an organization that could use extra gloves .
Cougher, who had recently met Baja Bridges Executive Director Katherine Turner, immediately suggested the organization . This kicked off the huge feat of transporting 15 pallets of gloves out of state .
“Moving more than 20,000 pounds of gloves from Tacoma, WA to San Diego, CA, and Yuma, AZ is no easy task. Getting all those gloves over the border
and into the hands of the people that need them is even more difficult,” Cougher said .
The gloves will be spread throughout the West Coast and into Cabo San Lucas and Mexicali .
“All fire departments, hospitals, medical clinics, dental clinics, ambulances, doctors, cancer centers, veterinarians, spay and neuter clinics, dog rescues, etc! You name it, if they use gloves, they will be getting some of these,” Cougher said .
“It takes a village to do something like this. We’re so grateful to Burkhart for this generous donation .”

At the start of the war in Ukraine, Dr. Tanya Manyak — a Burkhart customer who grew up in Ukraine and still has family there — was approached by a former patient to contribute to Hearts for Ukraine, an organization that provides critical supplies to those affected by the war.
Dr. Manyak reached out to Burkhart via her Account Manager, Rick Deming, for support
Burkhart donated various dental and medical supplies to the cause . Items in the first shipment included dental handpieces and other medical necessities, such as lidocaine, syringes, and gauze. A second donation of under $100K of gloves was also sent to Ukraine .
“Burkhart Dental Supply is endlessly generous to provide continued support. We’ve been working with Burkhart for many years. We always value not only their daily support with our clinical supplies and equipment but also their responsiveness to any humanitarian need — whether it was for our numerous service trips over the years or now with help for Ukraine,” Dr. Manyak said. Being able to help in a tangible way felt fulfilling, Dr. Manyak said. Since the initial donation, she and her practice have continued to support those affected by the war in Ukraine by raising funds, donating supplies and clothes, and volunteering “It all just sort of snowballed,” she said. “We don’t
want to stop and lose momentum I have profound gratitude for everyone who’s contributed — these are all generous and compassionate people, and I consider myself to be very lucky to be part of this profession .”

Snow Family Dentistry has been a longtime staple of northeast Mesa. First opened by Dr. Paul R. Snow more than 40 years ago, his son, Dr. Dallin R. Snow, bought his father’s practice in 2018.
A lot had changed in the community over the past 40 years, and it was time to upgrade the practice to accommodate this growing city.
We reached out to Dr . Dallin Snow (DS) and Burkhart Equipment Specialist David Rosas (DR) to learn more about the project
Tell us about the Snow Family Dentistry build. What inspired it?
DS: The new build was inspired by a growth mindset. Since I bought the practice from my father in 2018 we have been on a growth trajectory, more than doubling. When we set our goal to grow 5x we knew we would need a larger space to do it in . We have had a long-time relationship with Burkhart, dating back probably 20+ years with my father. Therefore we had the trust to know they would make sure we had everything we need and not have any delays.
DR: Glenn Blatter and I met with Dr. Snow for lunch and he told us about the scope of the project . His wife Lindsey was also a large part and my point of contact. We reviewed her design along with the architect and provided all of the necessary specifications for the project including power, plumbing, backing, and data support .
Was there anything that made this project unique? How has the new build changed the practice?
DR: The doctor planned on using some integrated side wall concepts by another company. We were able to work with him to assist in planning the wall-mounted lights and monitor mounts keeping everything off of the patient chair and ceiling .
DS: Now that we’ve been in the office for a few months, we have seen a big change in new patients calling to schedule an appointment, stating they’ve
“seen the building being built and are glad that it is done .” Because of the increase in demand, we have had to hire more providers to make sure we can take the best care of our patients, and we definitely have the room for it
Tell us about some of the featured equipment.
DR: Most of the operator equipment is A-dec.
Dr Snow also wanted to feature his A-dec sterilization center and his DEXIS 3D imaging in his new practice .
A-dec is the best dental equipment on the planet . It provides high quality, and high comfort for both the doctor and the patient and has an incredibly low cost of ownership making it a long-term win for the doctor .
What were some of the project’s biggest challenges? What was rewarding about this project?
DR: Honestly, every job has challenges. But, with the amazing Burkhart Service and installation team, anything thrown our way can be overcome.
What would you say to other doctors/offices who are considering a rebuild?
DS: If you are considering a rebuild, plan for the future Most of the advice I received from others who had done it was that they wish they had built more or done it sooner. We’ve planned for the future with this office and plan to build a legacy of service with our building!

“With another outbreak, I need to ask: Is your water safe?”
On October 31, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control released a Health Advisory Network Alert concerning dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) . A third cluster of patients has been identified to have been sickened by contaminated dental procedural water in the U.S. We don’t know where or how many patients are affected, but as those details emerge, it’s sure to get even more coverage .
The only way to know if your DUWLs are safe is to test. The EPA sets the standard for safe water at under 500 CFU/ml. It’s estimated that 60-70% of offices are doing something to treat their waterlines, but for some reason, only 10-15% are testing to ensure their protocol is working .
That’s like assuming your autoclave is working because the timer still dings .
With any successful program, you need a leader to ensure the tasks get done and done right. Why not appoint a Waterline Warrior for your practice?
National human resource leaders say employees want opportunities to feel valued and purposeful . What better way to feel like an integral part of the team than to keep patients and co-workers safe?
Safe water is as easy as one, two, three.
If you are just beginning this waterline journey, you will need to shock your lines with a highlevel antimicrobial to blast through the biofilm that has built up in your lines. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as products differ greatly. Some offices set up a protocol to shock monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually to stay ahead of the biofilm. But at the very least, you should shock if you are switching products to remove any residue or if your test reveals over 200 CFU/ml
Select a low-level antimicrobial to slow down the growth of biofilm between shocking . There are lots of great products on the market . Tablets and straws are the most popular Be sure to select one and use it properly. But remember, biofilm is a beast, so step three is key!
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you will surely pass if you are treating. Testing is the only way you know and prove you are delivering safe water to your patients.

At the time, he and his partners ran approximately 25 offices and saw dozens of patients daily — including patients receiving government assistance . Park said pediatric crowns were among their mostpurchased supplies .
“Our costs on stainless steel crowns just soared Our costs were just over $1 million for just crowns,” Park said.
Out of frustration with the continuous price increases and their effect on patient accessibility (not many doctors would treat patients on government assistance because the reimbursement rate was so low), Park decided he was going to try manufacturing the pediatric crowns himself .
By 2006, Park was mostly running the business side of the dental offices which meant he had some extra time on his hands to start researching how he can make this dream a reality. After two years of researching and trying to find engineers to take on the venture, Park launched Acero Crowns.
“We were the first company to go head-to-head with leading manufacturers,” Park said. While there were other companies making stainless

“In pediatrics, everybody wants to use a precurved crown,” Park said. “When you’re treating a kid, you’ve got about a 15-20 minute window and even the best-behaved child is gonna start to lose their patience with you, so you have to be fast and efficient. And pre-curved crowns allow you to be fast so you can prep the tooth and then the crown just snaps right on . ”
It was a challenge to gain traction with distributors, he said, but soon Acero Crowns was being sold through well-known dental supply distributors, including Burkhart In addition, it was difficult to convince dentists to use the product
“We have had dentists that go, ‘Why are your crowns half the cost (of other leading manufacturers)? They must be cheap,’ and that was the most mind-boggling frustration,” Park said. “And we were like, ‘We use a higher grade metal… we use surgical-grade stainless steel, our crowns are made here in the U . S ., like, no, we’re not doing any shortcuts. We’re just not making 1,000% profit.’”
But because Acero Crowns stuck to its plan of offering high-quality products at a fraction of the cost, it now means kids from low-income families can have access to dental care .
“It’s always been the foundation of what we do. It’s not that we’re going to have the lowest price, we need to bring it at a price where even Medicaid dentists can use this,” Park said. That’s kind of
like the test I use, you know, the vast majority of pediatric dentistry is Medicaid kids. If those dentists that see those kids can’t afford your products, then what’s the point?”

With inflation increasing overhead and staffing shortages being a reality for the foreseeable future, your dental practice has two options: add additional procedures or implement more efficient processes. In fact, many dental CPA and consulting firms are projecting that practice overhead will rise by anywhere from 5% to 8% in 2022. And according to WEAVE, 48% of dental offices in a July 2020 survey say they were short-staffed. To overcome these ongoing shortages, 41% of healthcare practices are now investing in new technology to help compensate for staffing limitations.
In a July 2021 ADA survey, the top four technologies that dentists believe would “have a transformative impact on their practice this year” included:
1) intraoral scanners (55%), 3D printing (50%), imaging (40%), and CAD/CAM (36%). These technologies can help improve your overhead through increased efficiencies and add to the bottom line with additional procedures.
It is becoming more difficult to show a profit in a restorative only practice. Whereas GPs providing implant services reported an average income of $355,570 (median $275K), those not providing implant services reported an average income $242,558 (DE survey, January 2022). The key to adding implant, endodontic, and other
surgical procedures to your practice is case selection. I like to say “wash your hands of the difficult case before you get your gloves wet” or “stay in the lane you feel comfortable driving in.” Technology helps you stay in your lane with enhanced diagnostics. Patients would prefer to stay in your practice for those procedures if possible. We found that when surgically minded GPs practice careful case selection, referrals to specialists typically go up.
CBCT imaging is the most comprehensive tool for adding procedures and efficiencies by providing predictable diagnostics. For example, with the advancement of low-dose 3D imaging, the concept of a 3D PA (replacing a PA for diagnosis) is often a better clinical choice.
According to a study from Clinical Research 2017, 50% of small volume scans found asymptomatic abnormalities. Studies of large FOV CBCT scans show the prevalence of incidental finding to be greater than 90%. During 3D training, we often find these infections and other asymptomatic issues on the scans. The direct connection between oral health and overall systemic health emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis.

Intraoral scanning and 3D printing are other technologies able to streamline your workflow and empower your staff to perform procedures they can get excited about — while adding to the profitability and efficiency of your practice. IO scanners can be a simple scan-and-send (to your lab) or a full design with CAD/CAM. Many systems offer their version of design software, so be sure to evaluate how that lines up with the services you would like to provide in your practice.
Arguably, 3D printing is the easiest way to improve efficiencies and add services. You can now print nightguards, temporaries, surgical guides, full models, denture teeth, and more with the advancement in resins. Plus, the cost to design and print a nightguard is under $40 and if the patient loses the appliance, you can easily reprint for $10 in materials. Simply scan, design, print, and deliver. Occlusal guard presentation tips are available from Burkhart’s Practice Support Team (PST).

Burkhart’s PST provides a specific technology training manual that is a useful reference after your initial
training. The manual covers topics like teamwork, return on investment, training, scheduling, fees and billing protocols, and coding as well as how to market your new technology.
Surgical guides are amazing tools to overlay your cone beam (hard tissue) with your IO scan (soft tissue) for restorative and implant-driven surgical planning. With this technology, you can digitally plan your case and have a surgical guide giving you the confidence to add these procedures to your own practice.
As a Technology Specialist for Burkhart, I’ve seen many dentists, since COVID-19, selling or retiring early due to lack of profitability and staffing challenges. The doctors purchasing these practices often reach out to me looking to add 3D technology, intraoral scanning, and/or 3D printing. If the purchasing doctor does not currently own a practice or has not in the past, they often cannot obtain a loan to add technology for at least two to three years. The conversation frequently comes up about whether selling doctors should purchase technology before they sell, like adding a new roof on a house before it goes on the market. If your practice is not digital with intraoral and extraoral 2D radiology, you should consider upgrading before listing your practice. If you can benefit from 3D and IO scanning during the last few years of owning the practice, this may be a good option. There is often a tax write-off while you enjoy new technology and have a high-tech office to entice a future buyer.
After 26 years with Burkhart, my favorite part of my role as a Technology Specialist is providing pertinent technology equipment that helps doctors grow their practice and rejuvenates their excitement in dentistry. It is especially rewarding after having an initial discussion with a struggling new dentist, then visiting with them five to 10 years down
the road in a very productive healthy practice.
