Our City
N
ow is the best time ever to Discover Burnaby. With COVID-19 throwing a wrench in people’s plans to travel outside of B.C., we’re here to help you explore the City of Burnaby, B.C.’s thirdlargest city with more than 248,000 residents. Our city stretches far and wide, with the mighty Fraser River to the south and the ocean waters of Burrard Inlet to the north. Burnaby is a study in contrasts. There are four bustling city centres – Edmonds, Metrotown, Brentwood and Lougheed – but our city is also loaded with so many natural places to explore. We have two large lakes, a mountain filled with trails, and dozens of tranquil parks to explore. City changes mean more trails and parks areas have been added all around the city. The city also has a pretty fine dining scene, with restaurants offering cuisine from around the world. The jewel of the Heights, the Peartree, even landed on the top-100 list of the best restaurants in Canada. So shake off that pandemic rust, and go out and discover the best that Burnaby has to offer.
• Burnabynow.com offers an extensive list of events compiled by the staff of the Burnaby NOW newspaper.
• Tourismburnaby.com is the city’s tourism bureau that can help you book anything you need for your visit. • Burnaby.ca is the City of Burnaby’s official website.

f you want to see just how diverse the City of Burnaby is, just head to the border. Burnaby’s North Road, commonly known as Korea Town, is a vibrant and lively area that is the place to go for delicious food, fabulous shopping, and professional services. Located next to the Lougheed SkyTrain station just off the Lougheed Highway, North Road is easily accessible by vehicle or transit. If it’s a caffeine boost you’re looking for, then you are in luck because North Road is quickly becoming known as Coffee City. With over a dozen different coffee shops, you will quickly find your new favourite coffee spot that is as unique as you are. Dine around the world at award-winning restaurants featuring delicacies from Europe and Asia, with a North American twist. Treat your taste buds to Turkish, Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese cuisine at North Road Square Mall (North Road and Cameron). Just south of Lougheed Highway rests the three malls that make up Korea Town, the largest Korean shopping
district in Western Canada. Check out their website www.burnabynorthroadbia.ca to learn more about if the annual Korean community day is happening this September. 5

Burnaby’s Mandarin Duck
Burnaby has its own version of “Where’s Waldo” with the city’s amazing Mandarin Duck. Nobody is exactly sure how the Mandarin Duck arrived in our city, but he’s brought in thousands of tourists who hit Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake trying to get a glimpse and a photo. The Mandarin Duck travels between both areas and you never know when he’ll pop up. “The mandarin, widely regarded as the world’s most beautiful duck, is a native of China and Japan,” explains the website Living with Birds. He’s a close relative of the North American wood duck–something Metro Vancouverites are very familiar with seeing in our local lakes and small waterways. Hope you find him!
Burnaby Village Museum, Deer Lake Gallery and Burnaby Art Gallery. You can even stop off for a bite to eat after your hike at the Hart House Restaurant. Burnaby Lake Regional Park is just across the highway with 19 kilometres of walking and hiking trails, as well as plenty of paths for biking and horsebackriding to choose from. Both lakes are great spots for canoeing or kayaking. Check out one of the lookout points or the viewing tower at Burnaby Lake, and stop off at one of the picnic sites with your lunch.
3
Head up to Burnaby Mountain: This is the highest point in the city, and home to Simon Fraser University. Burnaby Mountain is known for its mountain biking trails and obstacles, as well as picnic areas and the famed rose garden. The area attracts riders of all skill levels from across the Lower Mainland. It also offers the finest views the city has to offer.

Burnaby Lake & Deer Lake Park
Spend time in nature at the centre of the city at two of Burnaby’s best parks. Deer Lake’s peaceful, natural environment is also the centre for Burnaby’s cultural activity. There are walking trails connected to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts,

Confederation Park
One of Burnaby’s best-kept secrets, Confederation Park has everything you could want in a recreation area: baseball diamonds, fields, tennis, off-leash trails, track and tennis courts to start. Visit the Library, Youth Centre or Seniors Centre, or go for a picnic and take a ride on the Model Steam Railway that runs every weekend during the summer. Cool off in the spray pool or go swimming at the Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool on a sunny day as the city plans to reopen it.
Central Park
Explore the forest on the wellmarked trails in Central Park. See the Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, poplar and maple grove trees, and the geese and ducks at the park’s two ponds. The park is known for its recreation facilities, and for good reason. There are tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, horseshoe pitch, a pitch-and-putt golf course, and, of course, Swangard Stadium, which hosts many sporting, cultural and 7

The Heights
here’s no denying the charm of Burnaby Heights. You’ll get that small-town feel right in the middle of the city, while spending time shopping at unique stores, or sitting down for a cup of coffee, ice cream or dinner at one of its many restaurants. The Heights is right on top of one of the three hills in Burnaby facing the Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants – many of them Italian, English and Irish – came here in the early 1900s with the opening of Hastings Street and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. Soon after that, the first merchants made their way to set up their shops. Some of the businesses are still
owned by second or third-generation merchants, while others are owned and operated by new immigrants of diverse cultures. On the first Saturday in June is normally Hats Off Day with 50,000 of your neighbours at Burnaby’s biggest festival. Local businesses “tip their hats” to customers, but this year’s event was sadly cancelled due to COVID-19. You’ll also find some festivities around Halloween and the Lunar New Year. plenty of walking and biking trails, tennis courts, a pitch-andputt golf course, lawn bowling and horseshoe pitches, all under a lovely canopy of lush, native trees, including Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, poplar and maple. There are also ball diamonds, a fitness circuit, outdoor pool, and kids’ playgrounds. Don’t forget the Swangard Stadium, which hosts a variety of sporting and cultural events over the year. Scale Burnaby Mountain for breathtaking views of the Burrard Inlet and the North Shore. You’ll find the Kamui Mintara (Playground of the Gods) totems on top of the hill, created by Japanese sculptors Nuburi Toko and his son Shusei, gifted to the city to show goodwill between
Burnaby and Kushiro, Japan, our sister city. There’s cycling, casual picnic sites, the 1,400-metre-long velodrome trail, and a lovely rose garden. For mountain bikers, there’s downhill trails for riders of varying difficulties, some with obstacles. The trails attract riders of all skill levels from across the Lower Mainland. Appreciate the beauty of the Fraser River at Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park. The shoreline trail is popular for runners, or you can sit at one of the benches along the path and take in the scenery. The city has expanded its trail system here. Deer Lake Park is known both for its scenic lake views and as the hub of Burnaby’s cultural and art activity. If you follow the walking trails, you might end up at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, the Burnaby Village Museum, Deer Lake Gallery or the Burnaby Art Gallery (facilities are expected to be reopened as the summer moves on). There’s lots of grassy areas to rest along the way. If you’re hungry, stop with your lunch at one of the picnic sites or get a bite to eat at the Hart House Restaurant.

here’s plenty of outdoors to explore at the more than 150 parks in the city. With plenty of walking and cycling trails and outdoor amenities, you’ll never be short of things to do in Burnaby’s great outdoors. Take in an exhibit at the Burnaby Art Gallery at 6344 Deer Lake Ave. Open now for more than 50 years, the gallery now hosts lively public programs meant to enrich visitor experiences and appreciation of the arts. Artist talks and workshops on site hosted in conjunction with exhibitions are a regular occurrence at the gallery. Items not in use are stored offsite at the climate-controlled environment of the old Ceperley Mansion built in 1910. Original hand-pulled prints make up 80 per cent of the collection, with drawings, collages, paintings and sculptures filling out the rest. For more info, go to burnabyartgallery.ca.
