Prosecutors at a Burnaby murder trial intend to prove Ibrahim Ali attacked a 13-year-old girl on a trail inside Central Park, dragged her into the bushes, sexually assaulted her and strangled her to death.

After multiple delays in the trial, which began in BC Supreme Court inVancouver on April 5, prosecutor Isobel Keeley outlined the Crown’s theory of the case in an opening statement Friday (April 28)

Ali is on trial for first-degree murder in the death of the girl, whose body was found in Central Park on July 19, 2017.

Ali, who was 28 years old at the time of the girl’s death, has pleaded not guilty

The victim cannot be identified because of a publication ban.

Fifth lawyer quits in 10-year-old fraud case

A man trying to take back a guilty plea he made more than four years ago for an alleged online gambling company fraud in Burnaby has gone through five lawyers without resolving the case and is now looking for a sixth

Naresh Singh Mann (a.k.a. Nash Mann) indicated to the Crown in January 2022 that he wanted to take back a guilty plea he had entered in October 2018 to one count of fraud over $5,000.

The charge relates to an online gambling company

Mann allegedly convinced a Port Coquitlam man to invest in more than 10 years ago.

Mann is alleged to have claimed the investment would generate “significant returns” in six months, according to the BC Securities Commission, which investigated the company.

“Rather than invest the money as promised, it is alleged Mann misappropriated the bulk of the invested funds,” stated a BCSC news release after the charges were approved in April 2018.

More than 20 court dates have been scheduled in the case since Mann an-

nounced his plans to take back his guilty plea, but the application has yet to be made. On Monday, his most recent lawyer, Chandra Corriveau, withdrew from the record, citing a “loss of confidence ”

Judge Gregory Rideout expressed concern about how old the case was and ordered all future court dates to be made in person and in front of him

“I’m going to keep my hand on the accelerator,” Rideout said of the case.

Mann’s next court date is set for May 9

“I expect that you will have a lawyer,” said Rideout to Mann

In the coming months, Keeley told the jury they will hear from a forensic pathologist who will say the 13-year-old died of strangulation and that semen was found in her vagina and anus

An expert is expected to testify that the DNA extracted from the semen matched Ali’s, according to Keeley

The Crown theory, according to Keeley, is that Ali and the girl were strangers to each other, and that sometime after she left her home for the last time at about 6 p m on July 18, 2017, she encountered Ali on a trail in Central Park

He attacked her and dragged her into the forest, said the Crown.

“The Crown’s theory is that Mr. Ali strangled (the girl) to death in the course of sexually assaulting her,” Keeley said

The prosecution intends to call 50 witnesses

Three of the first witnesses to testify were Burnaby RCMP officers involved in the search for the girl after her family reported her missing on the night of July 18, 2017

The girl’s cell phone had been pinpointed or “pinged” to within a 30-metre radius inside Central Park, Const Richard Huggins told the jury

He and another officer, Const. Jason Castillo, were searching a darkened trail in the southeastern section of the park with flashlights when Huggins found a pink wallet beside the trail

A dog team was called in to search the forest.

Staff Sgt. Stacey Rogers, a call supervisor on duty that night, arrived on the scene before the police dog and handler entered the woods

“He was only in there for a matter of seconds before he started screaming

frantically for an ambulance to be called,” Rogers told the jury.

She said she “vividly” remembered the dog handler exiting the woods

“He circled around with his dog and was repetitively saying ‘No, no, no!’ because he was extremely distraught,” Rogers said.

In the bush, Rogers and Huggins said they found the missing girl lying life-

less on her back.

Her shirt had been pulled up and her shorts and underwear pulled down, according to the officers.

Ryo Iwauchi-Paradis, a paramedic who responded to the park, testified the teen was “obviously deceased” and efforts to resuscitate her would have been “absolutely futile.”

During cross-examination, defence lawyer Kevin McCullough questioned the police witnesses about a man Huggins had encountered inside Central Park while he was searching for the teen.

Huggins testified the man had told him he was part of a film crew working in the park that night McCullough asked Huggins if he had gotten

the man’s name or taken his photo

Huggins said he had not

“That’s not a big distance from where (the victim’s) body was found,” McCullough noted after Huggins indicated where he had encountered the man

McCullough asked Rogers if she had made any efforts that night to identify the people involved with the film set

She said no, that police resources were initially used to secure access to the park.

“If anybody were to exit or enter, we would ID them at that point rather than going into the park and scrambling to try to figure out who was in there,” Rogers said.

The trial continues.

There’s a new fastcharging site for electric vehicles in North Burnaby.

BC Hydro has opened its first fast-charging site, with two chargers, in Burnaby at Kensington Square Shopping Centre at 6500 Hastings St

“This is our first public fast-charging site in Burnaby and it’s an important location within network in the Lower Mainland,” said Katrina Chen, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed, in a press release

“It’s in a busy shopping area and these two 100-kilowatt charging units will provide reliable electric vehicle charging for drivers near Burnaby Mountain and Barnet Highway”

Each of those chargers can add 100 kilometres of driving to the average EV in about 10 minutes, according to the BC Hydro release

“An important part of our CleanBC climate plan is helping people make the switch from a gas-powered vehicle to one that runs on B C ’s clean electricity whether you’re driving around a city, a small town, or a more remote area of our vast and beautiful province,” said energy minister Josie Osborne

BC Hydro’s president and CEO, Chris O’Riley, promised to have 325 chargers in the BC Hydro network at 145 sites by the end of 2025

Burnaby Mounties are issuing a warning after a local senior was defrauded out of millions of dollars in an “elaborate” long-term cryptocurrency scam

Police say a woman contacted them in December 2022, saying she had been scammed out of a large amount of money

The victim told police she had received a text message in Mandarin in the spring of 2022 from a person who had contacted her for information involving the victim’s personal

business history.

Police say the scam escalated over several months, with the scammer creating a “friendly relationship” with the victim and communicating in Mandarin by phone, text, email and through a chat app.

“After gaining the victim’s trust, the fraudster then convinced the victim to invest millions of dollars through several transactions into a cryptocurrency wallet through an online trading app,” a news release said.

“While the victim was later able to check the balance of her investments

online, it appears this was done through spoofed apps mirroring the look of legitimate cryptocurrency trading platforms.”

Download links to the apps were sent directly from the scammers to the victim.

Once the victim tried to withdraw money, she discovered she wasn’t able to. Police add the person she had been talking with disappeared.

The victim was then allegedly contacted by someone using a different name, who said they could help her get her money back.

RCMP say the victim, who was allegedly pressured and threatened throughout the scam, invested more money, but it was also a scam.

“We are sharing this story to protect other people from falling victim to

similar scams,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl Philip Ho said in the release

“Fraudsters are often changing tactics In this case, it appears they were able to tailor the scam to target this victim in particular using information

about her career and business history to first build trust and friendship

“These scammers went to great lengths over many months to defraud this senior and convince her these were legitimate investments ”

B.C. plays good cop/bad cop in policing drama

The controversy over the future of policing in Surrey shows no sign of ending any time soon, even though the provincial government appears to have neatly placed a straitjacket on that city’s council.

While Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke is furious at Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth for daring to “strongly recommend” that she and her council supporters reverse course and back the transition away from the RCMP and to the new Surrey Police Services, she is not holding any cards in this poker game

Locke insists she will continue to push away from the fledgling SPS and towards keeping the RCMP detachment in her city, but it is not entirely clear how she will do that Farnworth adopted the recommendations in the lengthy (and in parts, heavily redacted)

report from Glen Lewis, his ministry’s director of police services. The report concludes sticking with the RCMP would jeopardize the safety of Surrey residents because of the force’s serious and ongoing staff shortages

The report leaves the door open to retaining the RCMP, but only if several mandatory conditions are met Given that the conditions largely have to do with maintaining minimum staffing levels that appear impossible to attain, they seem impossible to meet.

That is the stick that Farnworth is holding over Surrey council’s head

But he is also holding out a whole bunch of carrots. About 222 million of them, in fact.

After denying for the longest time that any provincial government money was in play, Farnworth promised to give Surrey about $30 million a year for five years to help pay for

transition costs Add to that pot another $72 million that won’t be spent on severance pay if Surrey does indeed continue down the SPS path, and you’re looking at financial implications of potentially $222 million

That is a lot of money for Surrey council to say no to (if it insists and going back to the RCMP, that $150 million disappears and Surrey would be on the hook for all severance costs associated with shutting down SPS)

Now, given that staff shortages are plaguing all parts of society health care, construction, ferries etc it is not certain that Surrey Police Services will fill all their positions in the three-year time frame envisioned in the police services director’s report.

But presumably its hiring of current RCMP officers who may be looking to the future in an entirely different way than Locke and her

supporters may start increasing in number

There is no question the RCMP of today are suffering significant problems that go well beyond staff shortages Alberta is moving to dump the force and move to a provincial police service, and the commission into the Nova Scotia massacre was scathing in its criticism of the RCMP

The Surrey RCMP detachment is the largest municipal department in the entire force. However, it appears that status is now under serious threat of disappearing entirely.

Nevertheless, Locke appears determined to take on the BC NDP government over this issue. But she may find it a little hard to effectively fight back in that straitjacket placed around her council

Objection to plan based on outdated standards

I was in attendance at the April 24 Burnaby city council meeting. During a brief review of the Emerald Place development proposal for the Brentwood area, a too-short discussion was had pertaining to the proposal, and some questions were raised to city staff why the non -market rental units included in the development did not have any three-bedroom units

City staff reasoned that their formula to determine the need for three-bedroom units has something to do with a development’s proximity to schools One council member referenced an outdated 1980s National Occupancy Standard that suggested boys and girls after the age of seven should have their own rooms

Between the city staff reasoning and the council references, I was left thinking that the council members are either too old to get it, or

too young to understand The 1980s are over

A three-bedroom rent split six ways is simply cheaper than a two-bedroom rent split four ways It’s not a difficult concept to understand This is why you see people lining up to shop at Costco

Thanks to Mayor Hurley’s initiatives to rapidly expand community centres and outdoor space in Burnaby, and the B C government’s recent grant to local governments to help build community infrastructures, it is completely tolerable if not enjoyable to live with many people in a small apartment.

A three-bedroom apartment is not simply for a mommy, daddy, daughter and son. Those days are way gone and council and city staff need to wake up to what is actually going on in Burnaby right now today.

I beg city staff to please step up and bring some reality to city council

We need three-bedroom non-market and market homes in Burnaby for anyone who wants to live there.

At his Burnaby home ahead of the final performance of the 2023 Jaz’N’the’Violin concert series inVancouver, one of Canada’s most beloved jazz guitarists, Bill Coon, looks back on his musical career from “stealing” his brother’s guitar to being named Guitarist of theYear in 2009.

Coon was young when he was first introduced to music through classical piano.

Growing increasingly frustrated playing the piano, a young Coon stumbled upon his brother strumming on his guitar.

In a conversation with the NOW, he recalled thinking, “How hard could it be?” Hoping to test his luck with the stringed instrument, he picked up the guitar, instantly fell in love and never looked back an act he would partly describe as “stealing the gui-

tar from his brother ”

“I just took to guitar like a fish to water,” he said “I just instantly loved the guitar and had an affinity with it ”

It wasn’t long before he realized he wanted to make music a career “I was playing a gig with my friend, and I remember playing at a Mexican restaurant we made $30,” he said

“And I thought I would be doing this at home for free, (now) they’re going to pay me to do this I just couldn’t believe that someone was going to pay me for doing something that I loved So that was the light bulb moment ”

Coon’s journey as a guitarist began with him playing blues before switching to jazz He was introduced to the latter genre in Montreal through a friend whose father was a jazz musician One day in the fall of 1995, following a show about Nat King Cole called Unforgettable with

vocalist Denzal Sinclaire, Coon said he wound up lovingVancouver, and he settled on theWest Coast

The guitarist, who has been a recipient of the country’s many accolades in music including Juno

nominations and awards from the BC Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts has studied with music legends like the late jazz musician Jim Hall, Neil Chotem and Rick Wilkins, and has collab-

orated with many significant jazz artists including Jimmy Heath and Eddie Daniels.

Playing the guitar gave Coon the freedom to improvise, express himself and pay tribute to the jazz legends before him, he said “I love this music so much that I want to share it with people and that keeps me performing ”

Coon can be found collaborating with many artists around the world, including local musicians like Burnaby-based Laura Crema, the CoryWeeds Quartet andTriology, with Miles Black and Jodi Proznick, who will appear together alongside MadsTolling in the final Jaz’N’the’Violin concert series

It’sTriology and Coon’s first collaboration with Tolling Coon is ecstatic to be performing with the Grammy-winning artist

“Triology is an interesting band,” he said “Although we play a little bit

of original music, when the three of us play together. we surprise each other … we don’t talk about what we’re going to play. For example, Miles will start playing a song on the piano.… He doesn’t tell us what song or what key he is going to play it in. Then Jody and I add ourselves to that song.We all take turns doing that. So that’s kind of an interesting idea of the band. And it’s going to be interesting to see how that concept of Triology works with Mads and what he wants to have happen in the music ”

Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley has revealed new plans to establish the BC Parkway in Metrotown as a “destination unto itself ”

“Today, the BC Parkway is a critical east-west connection for walking, cycling, and of course, rapid transit,” Hurley said April 26 in a video presented at the annual State of the City address hosted by the Burnaby Board of Trade

“But it falls far short of its potential of being a great urban space in the heart of Burnaby’s downtown ”

On Sunday, May 28, hundreds of people are expected to gather in Burnaby to honour and celebrate the lives of people affected by dementia in Burnaby and NewWest

Organized by Alzheimer Society of B C , the IGWealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is the largest annual fundraising event for the society

Each year, people gather in their local communities to raise funds for programs and services dedicated to people with dementia, and

contribute to research into the causes of the disease and possible treatments.

This year’s Burnaby and NewWest walk will be held in Central Park, Burnaby, on Sunday, May 28 at 11 a m , and will invite people to unite to show people living with dementia that they are not alone

For Sue Sami, volunteer and co-chair of the walk, the event is a way of creating awareness and educating people about Alzheimer’s and how they can seek help

One of the most important aspects of caring for someone with dementia

and Alzheimer’s is communication, she said. “It’s easy get frustrated,” she said.

“But learning how to (repeat information) as if it was the first time is impor-

tant for the person who has Alzheimer’s.”

A day to remember all of the things our moms did for us

Ithink it’s safe to say that when an expectant mother is at the baby shower being thrown for her and the baby, the greeting cards she receives tend to feature motifs that have little to do with the heavy-lifting reality of parenting

The cards feature images that include things like cute (sleeping! always sleeping!) babies, storks, toy blocks in pastel colours, teddy bears, rainbows, and an assortment of toys for very young children.

What greeting cards don’t feature are teething, crying (constantly), biting their younger sibling, navigating tricky peer dynamics at preschool, high fevers at 2 in the morning or any other such things

They also don’t mention waiting up until the wee hours for the partying teen to come home, helping our

kids with their first resumes, teaching our kids how to meet their responsibilities to themselves, their family, friends, and society, watching them do “grown up” things independently (and standing back to let them do it on their own).

But on Mother’s Day, it’s up to us to remember all these things our mothers did for us things they did willingly and without complaining, year after year after year

and some who are now grandmas It’s up to all of us to honour and celebrate them and most of all, remember them.

There are countless ways in the Heights to remember and celebrate our moms: from taking them out to a meal at a local restaurant, buying them a sweet treat at one of our bakeries or unique gift from one of our shops, to going for a walk in Confederation Park or on the trails nearby or maybe even a picnic.

However you honour the mothers and special mother-like people in your life, know that the love you are able to show them is still just a fraction of the love she has for you

A local Mountie who stopped a man from lighting a Burnaby gas station on fire and another local officer who talked a man out of hanging himself from a highway overpass have won awards for meritorious service.

On Feb 16, 2020, Burnaby RCMP Const. Karanjit Dulay responded to a

call at about 5:30 a.m. at Smart Gas in the 6800 block of CanadaWay.

There were reports of a man trying to light a fire at the gas station, according to a police news release at the time

At the scene, Dulay saw a man trying to ignite a gas hose with a lighter, police said The man kept trying to light a fire despite being confronted, according to police, and a video posted

on social media showed Dulay grappling with him and taking him into custody He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act

Dulay was recognized at the 39th annual Police Honours Night at Government House inVictoria last month for his actions that morning

“This incident could have resulted in serious injury or death to any-

one nearby,” stated the commendation “Notwithstanding this danger, Const Dulay put himself at great risk to save a potential catastrophe ”

Another local Mountie was recognized for talking a distraught man off a ledge at a Burnaby overpass

On Oct. 4, 2018, just after 8 a m , then-Cpl Brett Cunningham responded to a call involving a suicidal

male with a noose around his neck on a Highway 1 overpass.

Cunningham began to talk to the man and positioned himself so he would be able to take hold of him in the event he tried to jump Using de-escalation techniques, Cunningham convinced the man to come back over the railing and remove the noose The man was taken into custody under the Mental

Health Act

“Cpl. Cunningham utilized his experience and training to successfully apprehend the male,” stated the commendation.

Numerous Burnaby motorists were given a stern talking to last week as part of an initiative between Burnaby RCMP and BCAA.

On April 24, Mounties handed down a total of 54 warnings to local drivers at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Phillips Avenue during the Slow Down, Move Over campaign. Drivers are required by provincial law to slow down and move over for all vehicles that are stopped alongside the road with flashing red, blue or yellow lights

This includes maintenance and utility vehicles, police cars, fire trucks, am-

bulances, tow trucks and vehicles used by commercial vehicle safety enforcement personnel, surveyors, animal control workers, garbage collectors and other roadside workers.

The B.C. government says motorists must slow

their speed to 70 km/h in an 80 km/h-or-over zone and 40 km/h when in an under-80 km/h zone

Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley is calling on Simon Fraser University (SFU) to reverse its decision to end the post-secondary school’s football program

In a letter on social media, Hurley said he’s disappointed in the decision, and supports those advocating for the Red Leafs’ team to be reinstated

“The SFU football program has been a part of the sports community in Burnaby since the university was founded in 1965,” he wrote in the statement

“Many alumni have gone on to successful careers in professional foot-

ball, and the program has helped countless others achieve success in other fields.

“The long record of success has attracted high-quality athletes from across the world to pursue studies at SFU, including many from Burnaby. Given the timing of the announcement to cancel the program, many more talented graduating high school athletes who have already committed to SFU will be adversely impacted by this abrupt decision.”

Hurley added he joins athletes, alumni and sport leaders from across the country in urging SFU’s administration to recon-

sider its decision

SFU president Joy Johnson announced April 4 that the school had decided to end its football program.

In response, a civil claim on behalf of SFU football players Gideone Kremiler, Kimo Hio, Andrew Lirag, Ryan Barthelson and Dayton Ingenhaag was filed in BC Supreme Court on April 13, claiming the school had breached its contract with players.

In an interview with the NOW on April 5, SFU athletic directorTheresa Hanson said the school explored “all avenues” to keep the program going.

Nearly a dozen football alumni currently enshrined in the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Sports Hall of Fame have “walked out” and are “demanding” their removal over the recent decision to cancel the university's program.

In a news release, the SFU Football Alumni Society said the move is in solidarity with the players affected by the termination of the varsity football program

“They would be happy to return when the football program is reinstated after the administration’s sudden decision on the future

of football on April 4.”

The inductees that are withdrawing are Lui Passaglia, Sean Millington, Glen Jackson,Terry Bailey, Doug Brown, Dave Cutler, Wayne Holm, Rick House, Neil McKinlay, Rob McLaren and Orville Lee

“I don't wish to be affiliated with or have my prior football career ‘bring excellence’ to a university that no longer recognizes collegiate football as a worthwhile entity or endeavour for young amateur athletes throughout British Colum-

On April 4, SFU president Joy Johnson announced that the Burnaby post-secondary school had decided to immediately end its football program.

Canada is going to be commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s 60-year reign as Canada’s Queen. All coins coming out by the Royal Canadian Mint will have her portrait and 1952-2022 on the obverse of the coin. The reverse (what we call the front) will have 2023, thus creating the first triple dated Canadian circulating coins. Both the $50 gold and $5 silver Maple Leafs should be here in two weeks, and they will have that “19522022”included on the coin. We also have some of the 2023coin sets and the Silver Dollar The rest of the sets will be in by the end of February There is also a special commemorative dollar, with all four different portraits of the Queen that were used on our coinage It will be available around the end of February.
