Tirkane Sweathouse - Maghera
Tirkane Sweathouse is in a secluded area located 2.5 miles northwest of Maghera near Killelagh Lough. A sweathouse was a type of early sauna used in Ireland in 18th and 19th Centuries, but its origins may date back much further. Tirkane Sweathouse is a well-preserved rectangular structure built against the side of a hill with a roof made of flat stones with a small chimney hole in one corner. The floor is paved with stone. According to Ancient Monuments of Ireland, Vol.2, these Sweat Houses are the primitive fore runner for the modern Turkish Bath, which are known in Germany as Irish Baths. There are only a few such Sweathouses remaining in Northern Ireland. Tirnoney Dolmen - Maghera
One mile north of Maghera stands a prehistoric tomb at least 4,000 – 6,000 years old. This is a Portal Tomb. In it our ancestors would have placed the cremated remains of their dead. At one time it would have been covered by a cairn of small stones. In the small field to the south there is rumoured to be a souterrain or artificial cave. It would have been constructed as a bolt hole in times of danger sometime between the 5th and 12th Century.

Church Island
- Bellaghy
Church Island is a small island on Lough Beg. On a visit to the island you will discover the ruins of an old church, built on the site of a much earlier Christian foundation. Thought to date back to the time of St Patrick who used the River Bann to navigate to the island to meet with Taoide to found an early Christian settlement. On the island is a stone known as the Bullaun Stone featuring a hole that holds water. The Bullaun Stone is most likely associated with the ďŹ rst monastic settlement, however local anecdote has it that the hole in the stone was made by St. Patrick as he knelt to pray. The spire was built beside the church for Bishop Harvey in the late 1700s who wanted a view of a spire from his dwelling in Bellaghy. Derryloran Old Church And Graveyard - Cookstown
The existing ruins of Derryloran Church date to the early C17th and are recorded in a survey of 1622 as ‘almost complete’. It replaced an earlier pre-Norman church which stood on the same site and the 17th century church appears to have incorporated some of the worked stone from the earlier building. The church was extended in the 18th century when a western porch and bell-cote were added and the grand gateposts were provided. The building continued in use as the parish church long after the development of Cookstown, but in 1822 it was abandoned for the new church in the town. Some of the graves in Derryloran graveyard date back to the early 17th century. Ardboe High Cross - Ardboe
Ardboe Cross marks the entrance to a 6th century monastery associated with St Colman. The cross, which probably dates to the 10th century, is the finest of the Ulster figure-carved crosses, with an exceptionally full scheme of biblical carving across 22 panels. The Old Testament is represented on the east and south sides of the cross and the New Testament on the west. The north side is less easy to interpret but the baptism, judgement of Solomon, the slaughter of innocents and the annunciation to the shepherds have all been suggested. Roughan Castle - Newmills
Roughan Castle was built about 1618 by Sir Andrew Stewart, after whom nearby Stewartstown is named. It is unusual among Plantation castles, with a central threestorey square block, flanked by thick four rounded towers at each corner and it is not clear how it was roofed. The castle was captured by Sir Phelim O’Neill during the Irish Rebellion of 1641. He was captured in the nearby crannog in Roughan Lough in 1653 before being taken to Dublin, where he was hanged for treason. Benburb Castle
- Benburb
The Castle is situated on the grounds of Benburb Servite Priory dramatically sited on the cliff edge above the River Blackwater, this is a bawn built by Sir Richard Wingfield in about 1615, on or near the site of a stronghold of Shane O’Neill. The bawn walls enclose an irregular rectangular area, the walls standing almost to full height, plentifully supplied with gun-loops. At the northeast and north-west corners are rectangular towers, large, with fireplaces and more like tall houses than defensive flankers. The north-west tower has been re-roofed and restored. At the south end is a circular tower with a stair down to a postern gate at the cliff edge. The 19th-century house in the bawn is privately occupied and not accessible. Castlecaulfield Castle - Castlecaulfield
Sir Toby Caulfield, later Lord Charlemont, fought for Queen Elizabeth I in Spain and in Ireland against Hugh O’Neill. He was granted lands in Ballydonnelly by King James I where he built his manor house between 1611 and 1619. The castle was largely undefended, three storeys high and U-shaped in plan. It was described by the King’s Surveyor in 1619 as ‘the fairest building in the north’. The castle was badly burnt in the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and was partially rehabilitated by the Caulfields in the 1660s. There is evidence of its occupation into the late 1700s when it functioned as a residence for the Caulfield’s Rent Collector and used by local Yeomen. The castle took on an ecclesiastical role from 1767 until the current church was built in the village in 1841. Errigal Kerrogue Cross And Church Ballygawley
This site was originally a pre-Norman monastic site associated with St Ciaran (Dachiarag). It is referred to in the Annals in 810 & 838. The visible remains on the site are of the Medieval parish church which was destroyed in 1380. The sandstone cross is set west of the church and has been called ‘archaic’ and ‘primitive’ but it is clearly unfinished. The cross is 2m tall and consists of a tapering shaft surmounted by a circular head. A ringed cross has been light tooled on the east face. A flat boss was worked and straight lines marked on the west face but the stone was not further cut back, perhaps as a result of a flaw on the south side. Knockmany Passage Tomb - Augher
The cairn commands superb views south over the Clogher Valley. The covering cairn in its present form is modern, added in 1959 to protect the stones from weathering and vandalism. Excavation showed that a passage of the classic passage tomb is absent but several of the stones forming the chamber are decorated with characteristic passage tomb art including circles, spirals and zigzags. Prospective visitors should contact DAERA (formerly NIEA) to arrange for the chamber to be opened. Lanyon Hall It’s hard to beat the electricity and atmosphere of a live performance and we are investing heavily to make sure that Lanyon Hall is equipped to provide the perfect live entertainment experience. Lanyon Hall is named after renowned architect Charles Lanyon who designed prominent buildings on Molesworth Street in the 19th century. Prior to becoming a popular nightclub the venue started out as a live music establishment in the 1970s, so history has now turned full circle. 23 Molesworth Street, Cookstown BT80 8NX T: (028) 8676 3934 E: info@lanyonhall.com W: www.lanyonhall.com
