H O W D O YO U C R E AT E A Once an elevated freight railway track, New York’s High Line is now 1.45 miles of public park and an oasis for pedestrians. Our engineers assessed the existing structural and building service systems to establish which materials from the railroad could be reused. The High Line’s walkways are constructed from individual pre-cast planks with open joints to encourage plant growth through the cracks. Since opening, the High Line has become New York City’s second most visited cultural venue, attracting 4 million visitors a year.

Our 15 year relationship with Heathrow has seen us complete over 50 modernisation and expansion projects across the airport. HOW DO YOU MAKE NEW LIFE
Wadi Hanifah in Riyadh was for years a public health hazard, now with our help it has been transformed into a sanctuary for citizens to enjoy and relax. We improved the water quality in the lower reaches of the Wadi using bioremediation techniques. This sustainable approach, will make available approximately 120,000m3 of water per day for irrigation, agriculture and other non-potable uses. Since completion, Wadi Hanifah has significantly improved the city’s sustainable use of water, by reducing reliance on expensive desalinated water from the coast. The project won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010.

BeMobility, a German based research initiative, champions alternative mobility solutions. Through our partnership we have used our extensive modelling, data analysis and strategic socio and economic planning skills to identify the challenges and opportunities of integrating a green mobility system into an existing city infrastructure. Using smart grids and networks connecting alternative modes of transport such as electric cars, public transportation hubs, walkways and bicycles, intelligent engineering is improving the quality of urban life for all.

HOW DO YOU BRING
The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Energy Laboratory is the third project in the world to receive “Living” status under the Living Building Challenge, showcasing a cost-effective passive design approach that facilitates achievement of net-zero energy and water within an aesthetically pleasing solution. The project led in innovation by creating the Energy Lab, a unique 7,000ft2 building located on a slope on their K-12 campus on the Big Island of Hawaii to serve as a world-leading energy research and monitoring centre.
LEARNING TO LIFE?
HOW DOES GREENNESS One Angel Square is one of the world’s greenest office buildings. Our client, the Co-operative stipulated very demanding sustainability targets for the new building, with the aim of achieving a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’. A key innovation is the building’s combined heat and power installation, which is powered by rape seed oil grown on the Co-operative’s own farmland. The building sets a new benchmark for commercial office design, achieving a balance of sustainability, operational efficiency and space flexibility.

BuroHappold Engineering worked as part of ‘Team Stadium’, an integrated design and construction group, to deliver the London 2012 Olympic Stadium which, in legacy, is a world-class athletics venue for communities within London and beyond.
The simple superstructure with innovative lightweight cable supported roof encountered significant milestones, including the lift of the inner tension ring from its temporary scaffolding structure to its final position. True testament to the ingenuity and integration of the whole team. The commitment to close collaboration resulted in an elegant, inspirational, efficient and sustainable stadium that reflects the Olympic values of respect, friendship and excellence.

Atturaif is a huge undertaking for BuroHappold Engineering. Restoring an entire 400 year old UNESCO site across 58 acres in one project is no easy task. Historical materials clay, sand, straw and water are used to achieve authentic rebuilt structures on the site. Mud blocks are being used for the many dozens of structures that are being restored and rebuilt using almost no modern equipment. The site contains 14 new museums and 20 outdoor multimedia shows to bring to life the history of the Saud family, war and military history of the Arabian Gulf and the traditional architecture of this part of the world.

H O W C A N A S TA R P E R FO R M A N C E The O2 Arena is one of the most popular concert venues in the world and sits within the Millennium Dome, also designed by BuroHappold. A building within a building, the Arena’s 4,500 tonne roof along with specialist acoustic cladding was raised by jacking it into place. An ingenious solution given the restricted height limitations where the traditional use of cranes was not possible. The Arena’s cladding also helped meet one of the client’s key demands for exceptional acoustic performance.
RAISE THE ROOF?
W H AT M A K ES A Meizhouwan Port is an innovative, functional, flexible and sustainable masterplan which is set to raise the living standards of the region by reinvigorating the area with new homes and businesses. The key challenge to this development was to protect the fragile coastal ecology and at the same time develop an international size port. Our design solution was to protect the coast line by reclaiming and creating a port island within the bay, offset from the existing coast and connected via bridges for heavy and light rail. The reclaimed port also doubles as a protective wall for the coast line during high seas and typhoons.
