Nearby, the state-of-the-art indoor Malmö Arena was the venue for the 2011 men’s World Championship Final in Handball. The championships, held across Skåne, attracted 130,000 spectators to the region. The Swedish Open in men’s and women’s tennis is a July crowd-puller in the seaside town of Båstad. Skåne has one of Europe’s highest golf course densities and has hosted the Scandinavian Masters at Barsebäck Golf Club. Two 18-hole championship golf courses stand side by side at the newly opened PGA of Sweden National course at Bara, outside the university city of Lund. Equestrian pursuits are high on the agenda. The Falsterbo Horse Show attracts more than 60,000 visitors and the European Eventing Championships in 2013 will take place in Malmö, just 15 minutes from the renowned Flyinge Equestrian Centre, one of the world’s oldest stud farms. With almost 400 kilometres of beautiful coastline, it is no surprise that water sports are a major attraction. Malmö staged the 2005 America’s Cup selection regattas and Helsingborg is home to one of Scandinavia’s finest marinas.

Konstrundan, a ten-day art tour held across the region every Easter, showcases hundreds of artists and is a highlight of the regional arts calendar The Kivik Apple Market in late September, at the end of the Swedish harvest season, is a unique event where exhibits include “apple art” – pieces of apples turned into giant mosaics resembling paintings. The market attracts 25,000 visitors from far and wide. In Sweden the summer is short but sweet. Christinehofs Ekopark in Brösarp is a stately home that stages activities ranging from congresses to conferences and workshops.

The multi-purpose Helsingborg Arena, also under construction, will be an ultra-modern facility in the centre of town, close to shops and restaurants. In Ängelholm, 40km up the coast, the impressive glass and steel Lindab Arena can cater for crowds of more than 5,000 and is the home of ice hockey team Rögle.
