Skåne has always been open to Continental and international influences. Marshal of the Court RH Stiernsvärd wrote back in 1838: “A small patch of land known as Skåne is attached to Sweden to show Sweden what the rest of Europe looks like.”

Skåne

Skåne

– Sweet Scandinavian South Skåne is one of Sweden’s most beautiful and fascinating provinces, framed by the sea on three sides, and hills, cliffs, forest and great plains. The southerly location, mild weather and history have created the conditions for its distinctive character and made Skåne a small country within a country. Swedish. Danish. Continental. But mostly Skåne!

Good soil

Growing power Skåne’s soil and climate have also led to unprecedented growth in our nature and gardens. Small garden oases and grand castle gardens – the splendour is everywhere. The conditions for passionate golf are also unique, all the year round, on our 72 courses – a concentration only surpassed by that of Florida.

Close to everything Many have discovered the wonders of Skåne. This is where it’s happening! The distances to Denmark and the Continent are short. Skåne’s shopping centres are close together, and there are farm shops, well-stocked shops on lively shopping streets, and studios selling exquisite handicraft all over Skåne. The international atmosphere of the cities, led by Malmö, offers a wide range of experiences for all tastes. A warm welcome to Skåne to enjoy our special places! Some are so taken they stay permanently.

Foto: skane.com©Helene Toresdotter

Foto: skane.com©sydpol.com

The mild climate and fertile, black soil have led to favourable growing conditions and an unparalleled abundance. Nowhere in Sweden are the conditions for first-class produce as good as those in Skåne! Asparagus and new potatoes are grown as delicacies; pasta is made from our

own durum wheat, wine from local grapes, ABSOLUT Vodka® from Skåne water, and juice from Skåne apples! Locally produced organic food is served in traditional inns and gourmet restaurants around Skåne. Life quite simply tastes better in Skåne.

Northwestern Skåne fits an amazing amount into a small area. With 25 golf facilities and 31 courses, this part of Skåne has the world’s second highest concentration of golf courses, only Florida has more! The varied nature is perfect for experiences, discoveries and creativity, and along the coast, cultural centres and restaurants enjoy ringside seats by the water. Kullaberg, Hovs Hallar and Söderåsen National Park offer captivating drama. The varied nature is also striking on the little island of Hallands Väderö outside the picturesque Torekov and by the sung-about Backafallen on the island of Ven.

Inland, the moss-clad forests, attractive lakes and peaceful rivers are perfect for relaxation, fishing and swimming. There are also many beautiful gardens to visit. Sofiero Palace Gardens in Helsingborg are an experience at any time of the year and breathtaking when the 10,000 rhododendron bushes flower at the start of spring. The gardens of Fredriksdal and Norrviken are also famous for their beauty.

Creative joy Everywhere there are artists and potters whose creative joy radiates from potteries and workshops – a joy that also comes through in the taste experiences. On Bjärehalvön Peninsula, new potatoes are grown as a delicacy, and on Ven pasta is made from home-grown durum wheat and whisky is made in a local distillery. Helsingborg also has some of the best restaurants in Sweden.

© Tourism in Skåne – www.skane.com

Sofiero Palace, with its majestic views over the Sound and Denmark, is located north of Hel-

singborg. The garden with its rhododendronfilled ravines is one of the most visited in Sweden today. King Gustav VI Adolf who put the first plant in the soil in 1907 would without a doubt have been pleased with the collection, which is one of the most beautiful in Europe today. Sofiero hosts many events and exhibitions all the year round starting on 30/5 with the exhibition “Åt solsidan” (On the Sunny Side), which focuses on artist Karin Larsson. The castle will be filled with furnishings and other items from the couple’s home Lilla Hyttnäs. Sofiero Slott och slottspark, Sofierovägen 57, Helsingborg, www.sofiero.se

Above the centre of Helsingborg is one of Sweden’s finest open-air museums and an ecological garden paradise. Walk around Skåne in miniature with a unique collection of Skåne flora and native breeds. There is also a wonderful open-air theatre where Eva Rydberg gives humorous performances – this summer it is the classic Lorden från Gränden (play based on Me and My Girl). f Kullaberg Whatever the time of year, Kullaberg Nature Reserve will challenge your sense of adventure. It is a paradise for climbers and divers. Walk on cliffs along the sea or through ethereal deciduous forest. Join a cave walk or be fascinated by the artworks of Nimis and Arx, two enormous constructions made from parts of wrecks, stone and concrete. The classic seaside resort of Mölle by the foot of Kullaberg is a great place to enjoy lovely swims, harbour life and tasty food in the restaurant. Kullaberg, Mölle, www.hoganas.se

k Båstad Båstad can quite rightly be called Skåne’s Saint Tropez. Visitors flock to this exclusive seaside resort all summer to enjoy the lovely atmosphere, especially during the big crowdpulling tennis week of the Swedish Open when big international stars are on location. Båstad has more than 50 outdoor courts and a tennis museum. Båstad, www.bastad.com

Backafallen, which are celebrated in song, and the wonderful beaches can be reached on a hire cycle. g Pottery Northwestern Skåne with more than 60 working potters and potteries can justly be called Sweden’s pottery district. For almost 100 years, Höganäs Keramik has been a pioneer in pottery. Many of Sweden’s best designers have links to Höganäs Keramik, which is part of the Littala Group. Why not visit the well-stocked factory shop? South of Helsingborg is Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik, a historic workplace where utility goods are still made from clay on the site. It has a

Southwestern Skåne is dominated by the region’s biggest city, Malmö, which offers a wide range of shopping, entertainment, culture and restaurants – just as a city should. Malmö also sticks its neck out with the unusual, unique and special. Several shops and restaurants have taken the organic route, and the many cultures that have gathered in the city have left exciting impressions. Malmö has a clear historic vein that pulsates in time with future visions. A recent investment was in the area of the Western harbour with exciting architecture, ecological thinking and the spectacular building Turning Torso. Only a bridge away is the neighbouring country of Denmark with the city of Copenhagen in the heart of the expansive Baltic Sea region.

City of Ideas – Lund Just north of Malmö is the cultural city of Lund with its cathedral, one of Sweden’s foremost sights. Lund also has a university and many companies that invest in research and development.

Fertile and soft This part of Skåne offers fertile plains, top-quality golf courses and Falsterbonäset in the far southwestern corner. Here you can enjoy velvet-soft sandy beaches, picturesque villages and rich birdlife: ornithologists from around the world gather here to watch the flight of migratory birds. Along the coast of the Baltic Sea, you can look for amber, and if you’d like to experience real Viking life, you can visit Fotevikens Vikingareservat in Höllviken or Trelleborgen Castle in Skåne’s southernmost town of Trelleborg.

Lunds Cathedral

e Lund Cathedral The cathedral has two steeples, “Lunna Pågar”, which rise above the Skåne plains. It was built in Romanesque style in the 12th century but has since undergone many renovations and extensions. Least touched is the crypt where the giant Finn still embraces a pillar ready to pull down the cathedral. The astronomical clock that chimes every day is also worth a look.

It has approximately 30 houses that are typical of the time with gardens and settings from the Middle Ages to the modern day. Exhibitions are held here all the year round. This

year’s theme is “popular art from southern Sweden with a design perspective”. A visit at the exotic Botanic Garden is another must when visiting Lund.

popular Danish brands. Ingrid af Maglehem is one of the boutiques that concentrates on ethical fashion. There are also several Fair Trade and eco-shops around Drottningtorget Square. At Davidhallstorg, a haunt for the young and trendy crowd, the shop Lollopard sells its own design of unique children’s clothes. There is something almost magical about Österlen in southeastern Skåne. There, the landscape undulates like waves, and a journey along the country lanes when the rape fields spread out like a sea of gold is unforgettable. Many an artist and designer has found inspiration there and works in the studios and workshops. Everywhere in this southeastern part of Skåne, the apple plantations spread out and factories make drinks from the fruit, and in September, it’s time for the annual apple market in Kivik, which boasts the world’s biggest apple picture.

Where the land meets the sea, the idyllic little fishing hamlets lie close together. Go for a stroll along the cobbled lanes and enjoy a delicious meal, maybe made with local produce from the land and sea at restaurants with a personal touch. In Simrishamn, you can walk among the pastel-coloured houses along the twisting lanes. North of the town, Stenshuvud National Park with its legendary mountain offers vertiginous viewpoints, fantastic nature and exciting ancient remains.

Ystad and film In Ystad, film production has gained a foothold and the popular films based on Henning Mankell’s stories about Inspector Wallander are shot there. Outside Ystad, and other parts of this southeastern coast, the sandy beaches stretch for miles and are great for walks all the year round.

The northeastern part of Skåne is ideal for adventures and a joy of discovery in exciting but peaceful nature. There are dense forests, open meadows, beautiful ridges and watercourses that are great for fishing and canoe trips. The biosphere of Kristianstad Vattenrike (wetland area and eco-museum), which has attracted international attention, consists of lakes, rivers and wetlands with unique flora and fauna, eco-certified game fishing, guided safari tours with the “Nature’s Best” label and lots of opportunities for excursions with or without a guide. The mythical black stone diabase, which captivates artists from around the world, is quarried in this part of Skåne.

Eel and schnapps The area around Kristianstad is often knows as the centre of food and drink in Sweden. Enjoy meals based on tradition and new ideas. And talking about tradition: along the 40-km sandy beach on the east coast, eel feasts are held every autumn in the culture-historical eel huts. The delicacies are enjoyed with tall tales, song and festive spirit. During the summer half of the year, the beach and town of Åhus is the place for swimming, partying and a variety of events. One of the world’s most famous spirits – Absolut Vodka – is also produced in Åhus.

Under Skåne’s rolling landscape lies some of Europe’s most fertile soil, which allows produce of the highest quality to be grown. Here, people have enjoyed the yields from the soil for thousands of years, and Skåne has long been Sweden’s cultivation landscape and granary. The produce has created a big, unique food culture that lives on, not least, in Skåne’s many restaurants. Here you can often find local specialities such as pickled herring on dark rye bread traditionally baked in a stone oven, or spongy “äggakaga” (cake with apple, pork and lingonberries) the main ingredient of which is also found in what may be considered Skåne’s most famous pastry, the tall, magnificent “spettekaka” (pyramid cake baked on a spit) that still takes pride of place on many Skåne tables on special occasions. In early summer, rook is still found on the menu at some inns, and in autumn we all go out to eat goose and game.

FOOD GUIDE

In Skåne we celebrate our food all the year round. Asparagus festivals in the spring when the first early produce crops up in the soil, the Day of the Potato on Bjärehalvön Peninsula, our centre for new potatoes, and the Day of the Apple at the start of autumn when we like to celebrate the year’s harvests from our large fruit orchards in southeastern Skåne.

Naturally, we want you to find all the good things that Skåne has to offer on summer journeys, at festivals and when you want to find local specialities the rest of the year. That’s why we have created the homepage www.smakapaskane.se where you can find your way to farm shops, cafés, restaurants and delicatessen shops using the interactive map.

Foto: skane.com©skane.com

NEW THINKING Our food culture is not just steeped in tradition. Skilled chefs and entrepreneurs make sure the tradition continues to develop and that new raw produce is introduced into the Skåne fare: goat’s cheese from small-scale farm dairies, pasta made from durum wheat grown on the island of Ven, and even wines that have been highly rated by Swedish daily papers. The market gardens offer herbs from around the world, Skåne mustard acquires an extra touch of lavender and the traditional apple cider is continually being developed by small-scale growers. Rape oil is cold-pressed and has become a nutritious competitor to olive oil, and an increasing number of bakeries are using spelt wheat and leaven and developing a bread culture to rival that of southern Europe.

NEWS

In our Food Market we present our producers and their products. They range from fish, meat and game to bread, cakes, cheese and drinks. We also offer suggestions on what is in season in Skåne and provide inspiration and recipes of things to cook from the raw produce.

A few times a year we also send out a newsletter with information on what is happening on the food front in Skåne. Here you can find out what is in season, recipes on how to cook it as well as lots of exciting suggestions on where to buy and how to store your raw produce.

There are cottages, holiday villages, youth hostels and campsites for those who want peace and quiet and for those who want to fill their days with activities. Skåne also has accommodation for the ecologically aware as well as next door to relaxing spa facilities. And those who dream about that truly unique place can stay at the Viking Reserve or in a cave village, with Skåne´s biggest zoo as their nearest neighbour.

3 Borstahusens camping

If you would rather raise your tent in the Swedish archipelago as seen on TV, this is found as well – in the north-east of Skåne! If you are in the mood for fishing, try your luck at one of the several fishing camps.

Vill du hellre slå upp tältet i skärgårdsmiljö så går det också bra – norr om Kristianstad finns Skånes enda skärgård! At ÄngAvAllen, enjoy An experience for All the fAmily. All yeAr round.

You won’t just find us at the heart of some beautiful countryside; we actually live in harmony with it. For more than 20 years now, we’ve been faithful to our ecological approach and everything we sell and serve is 100% eco-friendly. Most of it comes from our own land. We make dishes that are every bit as delicious as the fantastic ingredients that go into them. As a result, we’re the proud holders of the title of Eco-Restaurant of the Year for 2008 (White Guide). If you’d prefer not to eat in the restaurant, you can enjoy the picnic menu in our 19th century park – weather permitting. Or else you can buy food from our farm shop. We also have lots of things to do for all the family. For instance, you can make cheese, bake bread or stuff sausages

together. For our smaller guests, who might not always be too keen on a four-course meal, we can offer an animal safari. This is usually very highly rated by everyone. Our hotel has everything from double rooms to rooms for people of all shapes and sizes. So everyone can enjoy comfort at night as well. Take a look at our website – www.angavallen.se – to see our menus and some handy ideas on what you and the family can do when you visit, both on the farm and outside it. Welcome! The Nordström Family
