Michigan-Based Company

Has Been Providing High-Quality Transportation Service For More Than A Century

D

By Rick Mullen, Busline Magazine Associate Editor

Diversification, adapting to changing times and the ability to reinvent itself have been keys to Indian Trails Inc.’s track record of providing high quality transportation services for more than a century. The Owosso, MI-based company, in its third generation of continuous family ownership, is celebrating its 110th year in business in 2020. “We established decades ago that Indian Trails is one of the highest quality charter

and scheduled service carriers in the Midwest. People have come to associate us with quality and consistency,” said Indian Trails President Chad Cushman, during a recent interview with Busline Magazine. “We have been through some tough times during the past 110 years, including the Great Depression of the 1930s, a couple of world wars, economic downturns, and more recently the Great Recession of the mid-to-late 2000s. We persevered through all of that by reinventing ourselves and adapting to changes in the marketplace.

Above: Indian Trails President Chad Cushman. At right: Indian Trails owners Mary Ferguson, Harriet “Honey” Biondi, Linda Mackay, Billie Maier and Winalee Zeeb.

“There are always going to be lower-priced competitors, but those who want high quality, consistency, dependability, newer equipment, 24-hour dispatch and well trained drivers, will pay a higher price for the service. Being a higher quality carrier is the niche we have created for ourselves.” — Chad Cushman, president

“When Indian Trails started operating, it was a scheduled service operator. We started with jitney service between Owosso and the Durand, MI, train station, as well as running trips between Owosso and Flint, MI,” Cushman said. “By the mid-20th century, we started to develop charter service and, from that point until the late ’90s to early 2000s, we slowly became predominately a charter operation.” When Cushman started at Indian Trails in 1999, the company’s operation consisted of about 70 percent charters and 30 percent scheduled service. “Fast forward to 2020 — we now operate about 30 percent charters, 30 percent scheduled service and about 20 percent shuttle contracts. The other 20 percent is our Michigan Flyer airport service,” Cushman said. “We now operate less on the charter side, but more on the scheduled and contract service side.” As might be expected with a transportation provider that specializes in offering a high quality rider experience, Indian Trails is not the cheapest ride on the block. “There are always going to be lower-priced competitors, but those who want high quality, consistency, dependability, newer equipment, 24-hour dispatch and well trained drivers, will pay a higher price for the service,” Cushman said. “Being a higher quality carrier is the niche we have created for ourselves.” Indian Trails was founded by Cora and Wayne Taylor of Owosso. The Taylors did not have children, so they hired their nephew, Bill Himburg, in the mid-’40s to steer the company. He worked through the mid-’90s. Himburg had five daughters, Mary Ferguson, Harriet “Honey” Biondi, Linda Mackay, Billie Maier, and Winalee Zeeb. When he died in 2013, each daughter became a 20 percent owner.

“We are an all female owned company, and you couldn’t ask for better owners,” Cushman said. “They are very supportive of our growth initiatives and reinvesting cash and profits back into the company. It is unique situation. There aren’t many transportation companies that are all female owned.” Cushman also praised Indian Trail’s Chairman of the Board Gordon Mackay for his many years of service to the company. “Gordon started here in 1972 and still serves as the chairman of our board. He has been actively involved in the business that whole time,” Cushman said. “I don’t think you are going to find too many people in the industry who have almost 50 years of service.”

As is the case with many of its contract services, the Bronco Transit buses do not display the Indian Trails brand. “Onlookers would never know the Bronco Transit buses are Indian Trails’, unless they looked very closely at the legal lettering on the corner of the bus,” Cushman said. “They are all branded Bronco Transit. They more or less look like a Western Michigan University bus. It has the school’s brand and the colors, even though we own and maintain the equipment that is operated by our drivers.” Indian Trails contract services also include apartment complex shuttles for students. Gordon Mackay, COB “At Western Michigan University, we operate two different apartment shuttles,” Cushman said. “One is called the SCHEDULED, CONTRACT SERVICES KEY COGS Paddock Apartments shuttle and the other is The Wyatt. Those are IN DIVERSIFICATION EFFORTS private shuttles we operate for student residents who live at the apartments to get back and forth to the campus. s Cushman mentioned, only about 30 percent of Indian “Students who lease apartments at those locations, have free Trails’ operation now consists of charter service. In 2020, Indian Trails is planning to expand the Michigan Flyer service to Toledo, OH, which is about an hour’s drive from Detroit Metro Airport. “Markets that are around an hour or more away from the airport are ideal for us because Uber, Lyft and any other ride share type services aren’t as cost competitive in those markets,” Cushman said. “The ride share operations are more cost competitive in the markets that are about a half hour away or closer. “We are doing our best to reduce congestion and get more cars off the road, and that is a Jeff Hutchinson, reason our Michigan Flyer convice president-operations cept continues to grow. It is going to be a large part of our focus during the next five to 10 years.” For Michigan Flyer customers, parking is available at various pick up and drop off points. Indian Trails has agreements with entities in East Lansing, Brighton and Ann Arbor to provide space for those traveling to and from Detroit Metro Airport. “We have an agreement with the city of East Lansing to use a portion of one of its parking ramps. Michigan Flyer riders pay $2.50 a day to park their cars right next to the bus stop at the Marriott East Lansing hotel,” Cushman said. “When they get back, they

can get off the bus, walk over to the parking ramp and get their car. “In Brighton, we struck an agreement with a Meijer retail store to use a portion of its parking lot, again charging $2.50 a day to park. “In Ann Arbor, the Downtown Development Authority has provided parking ramp space for passengers at $2 a day.” A significant portion of Indian Trails’ charter business is also contracted services. “We have contracts with the University of Michigan. Indian Trails is a preferred vendor for that school,” Cushman said. “We Dale Allen, also have contracts with Western maintenance director Michigan University, as well as other colleges and universities.” The charter business for the universities mostly involves carrying athletic teams. Indian Trails also services professional sport teams. “We service the majority of professional sports teams that travel in and out of Detroit, including teams that come to play the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Lions. “We pick the teams up at the airport, take them to their hotel, from the hotel to the venue, and then back to the airport after the games. “We also operate a lot of the traditional charters, such as K through 12 school trips, corporate moves, Chicago shopping runs,

trips for high school kids traveling to Washington, D.C., among others. So, we have a lot of travel agents and tour operators who book charters with us. Within our 30 percent charter business, there is a pretty diverse customer base, and, a lot of that is contracted work.” Indian Trails also operates charter trips to Cedar Point amusement park, located on Lake Erie in Sandusky, OH. “We now have a different face for our company. It is Michigan Flyer. It is Bronco Transit. It is apartment complex contract shuttles. It is contract university shuttles,” Cushman said. “We have tried to carve out a niche of being a dependable contract shuttle provider in markets that a lot of transportation providers aren’t delving into. “We don’t mind operating cutaway buses or 30- or 35- or 40foot coaches in order to satisfy customers’ needs. I think that is another thing that has made us a little more unique in our region. “I think the key for us is diversification. Up until the early 2000s, we were mainly a charter business, and then the rest of it was scheduled services. We had a number of scheduled routes throughout Michigan that we operated, but by the mid-2000s we started to diversify. With the tightening of university and corporate budgets, we knew we had to diversify to continue growing.” In addition to diversification, innovation has historically been another area in which Indian Trails has excelled. “We have always been on the cutting edge of innovation, going back to the late ’80s,” Cushman said. “We were one of the first motorcoach companies to introduce VCRs with color monitors. In ad-

dition, in the early to mid-2000s, we were one of the first, at least in Michigan, to introduce Wi-Fi in our charter and schedule service coaches. In 2009, we were one of the first to introduce electronic logging devices with GPS in our buses, which was well before it was a federal mandate. “A third factor in our quest to be at the forefront of the transportation industry is our equipment renewal program. For decades, we have had a business philosophy of reinvesting profits back into equipment. We typically purchase new equipment every year. I think those three things — diversification, innovation and equipment renewal — are what have been the keys to us sustaining and growing our business.”

T

he majority of Indian Trails’ fleet is full-sized motorcoaches. The company operates 79 vehicles, about 55 of which are over-the-road coaches, Cushman said. Prevost has been their predominant coach manufacturer of choice. During the past 20 years or so, Indian Trails has purchased more than 60 Prevost motorcoaches. “We just took delivery of three new H3-45s, and between now and May 2020, we are going to be taking delivery of 13 more new Prevost coaches,” Cushman said. “Four of those are going to be H3-45s, and the other nine are going to be the X model coaches for our scheduled service.

Indian Trails also started installing belted seats on its coaches in 2009, and most recently switched to the AmayaAstron A220 belted seats for more leg room. “In order to operate scheduled service, motorcoaches must have wheelchair lift equipment. All of our coaches, including charters, scheduled service and Michigan Flyer, are equipped with wheelchair lifts. “Many of our charter competitors in Michigan, because it is not required to have lift-equipped coaches for charters, rely on us whenever they have a request from customers for charter coaches that are lift-equipped. A lot of charter operators do not purchase lift-equipped coaches, because they are more expensive than those without.” Indeed, cooperation among transportation companies is often necessary to do business, despite the fact that they compete in the same markets. “We have a number of contracts throughout the year we couldn’t fulfill with the number of coaches we operate without that cooperation,” Cushman said.

Cushman gave the example of a large Indian Trails charter customer in Detroit. When the company has a large employee event, they often need more buses than Indian Trails can supply on its own. “In that case, we have some partner companies we work with regularly to subcontract buses,” Cushman said. “Sometimes we may need upwards of 30 to 40 buses to accommodate that customer’s movements. This type of cooperation works both ways, as many charter operators throughout Michigan will call us when they have a need.” All of the amenities and deluxe interior adornments on a motorcoach will be trumped if it is dirty and not well-maintained. Most reputable transportation providers take steps to make sure their coaches are clean and attractive going down the road. This is especially true for Indian Trails, as it strives to protect its reputation as a high-quality provider. “We have three full-service facilities in Michigan. We have one in Owosso, where our headquarters is located. We also have one in Romulus, which is next to the Detroit Metro Airport, and one in Kalamazoo, which is located on the west side of the state,” Cushman said. “Looking at where the facilities are located on a map in the lower peninsula of Michigan, they sort of create a triangle. So, we pretty much have all the major areas of the lower peninsula covered. “Within each of those full-service facilities, we employ our own full-time mechanics, washers, cleaners, drivers, supervisors and other staff. We maintain all our own equipment. Our coaches are serviced regularly at each of our terminals.”

However, drivers account for the majority of the positions at the company. “In recruiting drivers, we look for customer service-oriented individuals,” Cushman said. “To be a motorcoach operator, a person must have a CDL (commercial drivers license) and be able to operate a coach safely. However, when we are recruiting new drivers, we are not necessarily looking for CDL-experienced operators. “We are really looking more for individuals who can provide excellent customer service, because the big difference between operating a Driver Dean Cary motorcoach and operating a truck is our drivers are dealing with human beings, not cargo. road, customer service skills, and more. The program is split 5050 between classroom and over-the-road training. Training for Indian Trails’ operators does not end after the initial five-week program, as all drivers are subject to ongoing training and retraining.

“We conduct all the training for drivers in-house. Trainees are paid while they go through the program.”

“We typically try to meet with each individual driver at least twice a year,” Cushman said. “It could be just ride checks. We might also meet with a driver as a result of feedback received. Maybe a driver got a complaint from a customer. “We have a full-time safety and training manager who is focused on our training programs. We have three area managers and an operations manager to help out, as well. Jeff Hutchinson, our vice president of operations, also gets involved. We have about six people who conduct the training and retraining of drivers. It is a very focused effort.” With the country’s low unemployment rates, businesses across the board are having a hard time finding qualified employees to fill positions. “There is a shortage of qualified driver candidates,” Cushman said. “We are continuously trying to recruit new operators to accommodate our growth. ers. Currently, we are short-handed. We have been tasked with trying to come up with new ways to recruit drivers. Throughout our industry, it is a big challenge, and we are all having to come up with new and creative ideas.” As its service and contract shuttle business grows, Indian Trails can offer more predictable schedules for drivers, something it feels is a niche for the company within its market. “What we have learned during the past several years, is that potential recruits want to work predictable schedules. They want to know that they are going to be home at night, or ideally have weekends off, which is tough to do in our industry,” Cushman said. “We operate some contracts that are just Monday through Friday. Because the majority of our business is now contract trips, when we recruit drivers, we are able to tell them that the majority of our schedules are predictable, as opposed to charters, which are very unpredictable. “The evolution of our company into a more diversified shuttle and schedule service business is helping with the recruitment of drivers. We also let recruits know Indian Trails is a financially-stable company.”

ike their big city counterparts, smaller communities often rely on public transportation to help expand economic development and provide more options for residents and visitors alike when it comes to “getting around town.” That is certainly the case in Winchester, VA, a city of approximately 28,000 residents located in the most northern part of the state.

January/February 2020

Since 1951, the city has operated Winchester Transit — known to the locals as WinTran — providing fixed-route, paratransit and trolley bus services for the benefit of its passengers. “We currently operate seven light-duty body-on-chassis and two mediumduty buses, along with one trolley bus and one modified lift van,” Winchester Transit Transportation Services Division Manager Renee Wells said. She explained that WinTran averaged 190,000 vehicle revenue miles during the past fiscal year, with an approximate ridership count of 135,000. “We feel our current ridership count is healthy for a transportation operation of our size. Ridership has been very consistent over the past several years. Many riders of our system have few choices when it comes to getting around Winchester. They rely on WinTran for trips to the doctor’s office, groceries and other shopping and in getting to and from work and school,” Wells said. “Our fixed-route service operates in a 9-square-mile area within Winchester. Hours are from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. We are closed on Sundays. “For our paratransit program, WinTran provides an origin-to-destination service. That means we pick up passengers at a specific place, such as their residences, and deliver them to their destinations. Our paratransit service is provided within the city limits, and extends to destinations located threequarters of a mile past any of our seven fixed-routes. Therefore, unlike our fixed-routes, which are all located within the city, our paratransit service does extend a bit outside of Winchester.” Residents and visitors alike will also notice a red and green trolley bus operating within the city limits. That vehicle is part of WinTran as well. “We have had the trolley bus in operation for about 10 years. It helps with senior citizen mobility and tourism, although everyone is welcomed to ride the trolley. We simply call it ‘our trolley bus route,’” Wells said. “It connects

Winchester is also located approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. “Most people around here will tell visitors, ‘Winchester is just over the mountain from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.’ Many people in Frederick County commute back and forth to our nation’s capital,” Wells said. “Winchester is considered a small urbanized area. The city itself consists of 9.3 square miles. Although our population is around 28,000, it can grow to approximately 41,000 on any given day with an influx of visitors as Winchester is a regional hub for tourism, retail shopping and dining within the Frederick County area.”

Exceptional comfort abounds throughout the Volvo 9700. Electronically controlled air suspension and a rigid frame design make for a confident, reassuring ride. Its latest generation ensures substantially improved performance and fuel economy. Productivity, efficient design and safety define the Volvo 9700.

The X3-45 Commuter Coach is designed from the Prevost platform known for durability, reliability, and lifetime value. The coach has been Exova Certified for structural integrity and is BAA compliant. Developed with a focus on transit operation concerns such as passenger safety, accessibility, low operation costs and ease of maintenance, the X3-45 Commuter is the ideal coach for the commuter market. The Prevost Electronic Stability Program is the first system with rollover and under/over-steer protection and electronically compensates for quick reaction in adverse conditions. The Prevost X3-45 includes three-point seat belts on a 20G rated welded rail system for an exceptionally secure passenger environment. Passengers of the X3-45 Commuter immediately notice the large entry area through the bi-part doors with the lowest steps and the shortest stairway, making it easier on mobility challenged passengers. According to www.winchesterva.gov, George Washington made his first trip to Winchester at age 16 as a land surveyor. Later, Fort Loudoun was erected in the city under the guidance of Colonel Washington, during the French & Indian War. Washington would later be elected to represent Frederick County at the House of Burgesses. During the Civil War, Winchester’s occupation changed approximately 70 times between Union and Confederate troops. Several major battlefields from the Civil War are located in, or near, Frederick County. Winchester is also the birthplace and early home of country music legend, the late Patsy Cline. She is buried near the city. The area is known as well for its natural beauty. Frederick County is in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley, while a portion of the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail is located not far from the county’s eastern edge. Although shorter compared to its host city, Winchester Transit’s own history extends nearly 80 years. It began as a privatelyowned operation in the early 1940s, before being sold to the city of Winchester in 1950. “The city officially started operating the transit service in 1951, with few major changes taking place until 1989,” Wells said. “That was the year our complementary paratransit service began,

with the city purchasing a lift van to comply with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.”

Pictured is one of WinTran’s buses produced by ARBOC Specialty Vehicles.

According to Wells, Winchester city officials have remained committed to the transit system over the decades. “They continue to understand the needs of our ridership, and the importance of a good transportation system for the community as a whole,” she said. “The Commonwealth of Virginia is also great to work with, such as the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. They are always looking for initiatives to enhance public transportation.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF GREAT EQUIPMENT & CUSTOMER SERVICE

mong the equipment used at Winchester Transit are buses produced by ARBOC Specialty Vehicles. The buses have served the transit system, and its ridership, well over the years, according to Wells. “We currently have six ARBOC buses. Three of those are used for our paratransit service and the other three for our fixed-routes,” she said. “Four of the buses are 2016 models, while the other two are brand new 2019 vehicles. “Our drivers love the ARBOCs, stating that they ‘drive just like a car.’ They are especially impressed with the suspension and turning radius.” She noted that the vehicles’ lower suspension and wheelchair ramp capabilities have been very well received by drivers and passengers alike. “Our transfer station is located in Winchester’s downtown historic district. As with most older historic districts, the roads there are very narrow. Before we received the ARBOC vehicles, a driver would have to operate a wheelchair lift in places that were a little harrowing, such as near oncoming traffic,” Wells said. “It’s so much easier with the ramps on our ARBOC buses. We also feel it’s safer for passengers and drivers. “Overall, our experience with those buses has been very positive.” Wells also discussed specific advancements in technology that are helping Winchester Transit’s ridership. That includes an automated stop announcement system now in place. “That has tremendously helped our riders with disabilities, letting them know which bus stop is next. It’s been a really good addition to our transit system,” she said. “We also now have an automated reservation system in place for our paratransit riders. It not only helps us in the office, but paratransit riders are now called the day prior to their next appointed ride, reminding them of their appointment. We have had that system in place for three years.” Officials at Winchester Transit are also pursuing a mobile data terminal system, designed to help drivers and dispatchers communicate more efficiently. “It will also allow our drivers to better count passengers as they board and disembark,” Wells said. “Another technol-

ogy we are currently utilizing is an advanced notification system. That allows us to better announce route cancellations or other changes within our entire system. It’s designed for riders who have opted to receive such messages via text, phone or email.” Through the use of modern equipment and technology, Wells said Winchester Transit is able to provide better customer service programs for its ridership. She noted that word-of-mouth can either lead more or fewer people to public transportation, much of that depending on how riders are treated. “Being a local government agency, customer service plays a huge part in what we do at Winchester Transit. Our department includes employees who work on the front lines. They become the face of

the city. People see those employees all of the time, certainly more than they see city officials who work behind a desk,” Wells said. “Winchester Transit is dedicated to providing the type of quality services our passengers deserve. We work every day on offering great customer service in a safe, efficient and reliable environment. That is accomplished through professional leadership, safe and professional drivers, and our overall customer-oriented workforce. We push customer service from the top down.”

“Winchester officials look at employees, across the board, as the city’s most valuable assets. That includes drivers within the transit system who genuinely care about the well-being of their passengers,” she said. She explained that drivers at Winchester Transit share various duties when it comes to the different transportation options being delivered by the city. “Each driver will spend a certain number of weeks operating a fixed-route bus and a certain number of weeks operating a paratransit vehicle,” Wells said. “That allows them to get to know a lot of different riders. They truly care about all types of passengers. For example, when a driver is working paratransit and a rider does not come out of his/her residence, that driver will investigate to make sure the rider is OK. We can initiate a wellness check. “Our drivers are very dedicated and provide top-notch and outstanding customer service at all times. We get very few customer service-related complaints. Again, they are the face of our entire organization.” When hiring drivers, Winchester Transit requires all candidates to hold a CDL license. Once hired, they go through a specific training process beyond what was taught to earn the CDL. “There are several major steps that each new driver takes. That involves in-house training, such as familiarization of our employee handbook and specific city policies and procedures,” Wells said. “New drivers start by working in the office for several days, then

“Each driver will spend a certain number of weeks operating a fixed-route bus and a certain number of weeks operating a paratransit vehicle. That allows them to get to know a lot of different riders.”

It’s also the belief of Winchester city officials that quality customer service begins by treating employees well. “We treat our internal customers (employees) the way we want them to treat our external customers. We do that by starting from within,” Wells said. “You can’t expect your employees to treat customers a certain way without treating those employees the same way. It begins with professional leadership.” Currently, Winchester Transit employs 10 full-time drivers and two part-time drivers. There is also Transit Supervisor Kenny Johnson, transportation services division manager (Wells) and an office assistant.

working with our transit supervisor for one to two weeks. The supervisor goes over all of Winchester Transit’s bus routes and company rules. The new drivers are then placed with an experienced lead driver for another two to three weeks. It is here that new drivers learn how to collect and count fares and conduct transfers. Overall, our new driver training program takes approximately six weeks to complete.” Wells added it’s important that new drivers learn at their own pace. There is no specific time frame set for when a driver must go out on his/her own in a Winchester Transit vehicle for the first time. “When hiring, we look for candidates who exhibit characteristics of being safe and capable of working with people. We also conduct all the necessary background checks,” she added. “A good driver is somebody who pays attention to detail, is capable of multi-tasking and possesses a positive attitude. Those are the main attributes we look for in drivers.” Although the national driver shortage continues to make headlines to the discouragement of many motorcoach/bus operators, Wells said that Winchester Transit has been fortunate in that its driver turnover rate remains very low. “We don’t have a lot of turnover among our full-time drivers. Where we have had trouble is finding enough part-time drivers. We would like to hire more part-time drivers, but they remain hard to find,” she said. “We actually keep a part-time bus driving position open-ended. If a person applies to be a part-time driver, we will look at his/her qualifications. An interview may follow. We can always use another part-time driver. That never seems to change.”

our riders need,” Wells said. “Hopefully in the future, public transportation in our area can expand regionally. Right now, there are not a lot of transportation options for those who live in rural areas in our county. “We are seeing public transportation from the Washington, D.C., area coming closer to Frederick County. It currently reaches approximately 40 miles from Winchester. I feel that should be viewed as a good thing, providing more options for people when it comes to travel as the metropolitan transit systems expand.” She added that as more benefits of public transportation are promoted, the greater the likelihood of its growth in new areas. “There are always going to be people who are not used to using public transportation. It’s therefore important to keep moving forward and trying to reach those people,” Wells said. “It goes back again to providing good customer service. If riders are treated well, they will likely return. It also helps that members of the younger generation seem more open to public transportation and the industry’s different environmental benefits.” Public transportation can also be a wonderful career choice for many people, Wells added. That includes those interested in being a driver, mechanic, dispatcher or working in any number of executive positions. “Although public transportation was not my original career choice, I’m very glad to now be part of this industry. I have been

with Winchester Transit since 2001, and have met some really wonderful people along the way,” Wells said. “That includes riders of our paratransit and fixed-route services who have been using Winchester Transit ever since I started here. I have been able to develop some great, professional relationships with many wonderful people. That is very rewarding. “Another great thing about making a career in public transportation is its fast-paced environment. You never experience the same type of day twice. There are also so many different types of people that you can meet and talk to on a daily basis in this industry. The work suits my personality very well.”

“New drivers start by working in the office for several days, then working with our transit supervisor for one to two weeks.”

MCI Awarded 5-Year Contract From AC Transit For Up To 50 D45 CRT LEs Receives Notice To Proceed For 36 MCI D45 CRT LE Commuter Coaches

Motor Coach Industries (MCI), a U.S. subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., announced that Oakland, CA’s AC Transit approved the purchase of 36 of MCI’s new, more accessible D45 CRT LE commuter coaches. The order is a result of a recent competitive procurement for up to 137 D45 CRT LE coaches, of which 50 can be procured for AC Transit’s use with the remaining 87 options being available for use by other transit authorities throughout the United States. “The newly procured D45 CRT LE coaches will operate on AC Transit’s Transbay Network. Ultimately, these coaches will be the backbone of AC Transit’s efforts to eliminate commuter gridlock across three of the Bay Area’s most congested bridges,” according to a press release. “ADA (American With Disabilities Act) and Buy America compliant, the Altoona-tested next generation MCI D45 CRT LE Commuter Coach was designed through consultation with leading advocacy groups. These groups, including the National Council on Independent Living,

evaluated numerous concepts and the final prototype design.

“In addition to the breakthrough accessibility, the D45 CRT LE offers plenty of horsepower for hills and highways and a shorter turning radius for improved navigation around city streets. The new model also offers enhanced interior illumination and brighter LED headlights to enhance visibility. A wider front door with an ergonomic spiral entryway also features enhanced illumination on the stairwell,” said MCI. AC Transit General Manager Michael

Hursh said, “For many riders with impairments, AC Transit is an essential lifeline to physicians, careers, and recreation. With a passenger focus, we are assembling an entirely new bus fleet that not only accommodates all riders, but mobility devices as well. MCI’s new D45 CRT LE is the coach that will help revolutionize our boarding. Its middle door’s ADA ramp opens to an ingenious vestibule, eliminating stairs, quickens boarding and provides ample space and greater independence for riders with mobility devices.” AC Transit became the first public transit agency to test the MCI D45 CRT LE in revenue service, following the model’s debut at the 2017 APTA Expo in Atlanta. MCI loaned its MCI D45 CRT LE prototype to AC Transit in December of that year, as a test vehicle on several Transbay bus lines regular routes for a three-week demonstration, enabling AC Transit to solicit feedback from passengers, drivers, maintenance staff and its accessibility committee. The pilot ran in excess of 100 trips,

throughout AC Transit’s service area, free of charge for all passengers — in exchange for participation in an on-board survey of the MCI D45 CRT LE’s overall ridership experience. The results were: 93 percent of riders surveyed wanted AC Transit to add the model to its fleet, giving its ride quality, comfort of seats and overhead reading lights the highest rating. “MCI’s relationship with AC Transit spans two decades,” said Tom Wagner, MCI vice president, public sector. “We were extremely honored to have AC Transit among the first to embrace the MCI D45 CRT LE’s ground-breaking new design, providing riders with a more comfortable, accessible experience.” AC Transit is California’s third-largest bus-only transit district. It serves nearly 170,000 riders each weekday. With two service areas traversing 364-square-service miles, the district operates 151 bus lines, aboard 637 active coaches. Currently, 79 MCI Commuter Coaches serve as the backbone of AC Transit’s Transbay service. Visit www.mcicoach.com for more information.

AVTA Helps To Spread Holiday Cheer With “Stuff-A-Bus” Toy Drive For Kids

The Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) Stuff-A-Bus Holiday Toy Drive, once again in 2019, collected donations of new unwrapped toys, clothing and gifts for children ages 0-18. For more than 20 years, this annual event has brought joy to the hearts of local needy children during the holidays by collecting enough toys and clothes to fill AVTA’s specially decorated all-electric 40-foot bus to the roof. All items donated stayed in the Antelope Valley, and benefitted children from Grace Resource Center, South Antelope Valley Emergency Services of Palmdale (SAVES), Children’s Center of the Antelope Valley, Children’s Bureau, Antelope Valley Partners for Health, the Child and Family Guidance Center and the Marco & Sandra Johnson Foundation. Nearly 30 businesses helped AVTA to raise $20,000 to help purchase toys and gifts for the holiday drive. “Our sponsors, which included BYD, and Complete Coach Works, make a huge

impact on the lives of many local families," said AVTA Board Chair Marvin Crist. This year, the transit agency wanted to “Stuff That Bus!” with more donations than ever before, and kicked off the toy drive on Saturday, December 7, by taking part in the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce’s “Twas the Moon Landing Before Christmas,” parade. Radio stations KGMX and KTPI broadcast live from the event, with holiday music and free giveaways. On Saturday, December 14, the AVTA Stuff-A-Bus also participated in the Palmdale Chamber of Commerce “Olde Tyme Christmas” parade. To further enhance the holiday season for all Antelope Valley residents, AVTA gave back to the community even more, by providing a new pair of socks for the homeless for every new unwrapped toy, gift or clothing item donated to the StuffA-Bus toy drive.

“AVTA is committed to partnering with the community each holiday season, bringing joy to those in need,” said AVTA CEO Macy Neshati. “The key to our success is our staff, volunteers, local residents and sponsors, all working together with the goal of helping kids.”

Report Shows: San Diego’s MTS Delivers $1 Billion In Annual Value To Regional Economy Regional Transit Operator Supports Nearly 13,000 Local Jobs

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) generated $1 billion in positive economic impact for the region, a new report shows. Conducted by the Fermanian Business & Economic Institute at Point Loma Nazarene University, the report concludes that every dollar of public investment returns $2.82 in the form of jobs, infrastructure investment, productivity gains, environmental benefits and money saved by riders. “MTS is connecting the economy in San Diego. Access to a convenient, safe and reliable transit system is the cornerstone of major metropolitan cities. It plays a significant role in bringing more investment, attracting talent and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This Economic Impact Report highlights the numerous benefits that MTS is already bringing to San Diego communities, and why continued support of MTS is a wise investment in our transportation future,” said MTS Board Chair Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. The transit system generates positive economic impact through a number of channels, particularly jobs. MTS is responsible for nearly 13,000 jobs and approximately $625 million in total personal income. This includes capital spending, direct and indirect employment, and service contracts. “As the region considers the future of transportation, it is important for policymakers, business leaders, and residents to know the economic linkages and effects of its transit system,” the report stated.

Further, transit is an essential link connecting workers and employers, and it provides access to education and job training programs. More than 300,000 trips each weekday take San Diegans to and from work or school. With the U.S.-Mexico border a major economic gateway, transit links workers living in Mexico with employers in San Diego, with about 19,000 bus and trolley trips serving the border daily. “MTS not only does an exceptional job of moving people to and from work, college campuses, Petco Park and elsewhere, it also is a powerful economic engine in our region,” said Jaymie Bradford, San Diego regional Chamber of Commerce executive vice president and chief operating officer. “MTS also helps riders save money on transportation. Riders saved an estimated $861 million on transportation last year, with most of those savings happening for low-income families, who comprise a majority of MTS riders.” The report also examined the impact of MTS on reducing the region’s carbon footprint and achieving Climate Action Plan goals. By riding transit, MTS riders helped reduce the region’s greenhouse gas emissions by 97,000 metric tons, the equivalent of 403 million fewer car miles driven and 106 million fewer pounds of coal burned, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, translating to $13.6 million in environmental savings.

MTS helped the region save an estimated $6.1 million in expenses related to income loss, health care, rehabilitation and car repairs. “What is particularly notable about MTS is that it delivers those benefits in a competitive, cost-effective way, said Lynn Reaser, chief economist of the Fermanian Business & Economic Institute. “We found that MTS outperforms the transit systems of the other 15 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., with the highest cost recovery rate and among the lowest rider costs in the nation. MTS commissioned the Fermanian Business & Economic Institute to conduct the study based on economic data from the fiscal year ending in June 2018. Prince George Cougars Hockey Team Acquires New Prevost H3-45

Western Canadian hockey team, the Prince George Cougars, located in Prince George, British Columbia, have partnered with the Pacific Western Group of Companies (PWT) to acquire a 2020 Prevost H345. The Cougars 10-year relationship with PWT made the decision to acquire the Prevost coach, which will transport the Prince George Cougars hockey team, an easy one, according to a press release. James Vine, PWT business development

director, said he was impressed with Prevost’s delivery time. “We ordered the 2020 H3-45 in mid-May and received it in September,” said Vine. “That was really impressive and satisfying because we’ve never experienced such a quick turn-around, and it was just in time for the new hockey season — which was great.” The new coach was completely tailored to the team’s needs with 48 seats (selected

by the players), card tables in both the front and back of the coach, extra leg room, 3point seat belts, custom headrests and features such as surround cameras that show the area outside the coach, and an entertainment system that allows each passenger to choose individual entertainment options. Prevost said the unique features and upgrades allow the players to travel in luxury, comfort and safety. “Replacing a few of the seats to install extra card tables was really important to us,” said Andy Beesley, vice president of the Prince George Cougars. “With one of the heaviest travel schedules in the league, the Prevost is a great coach for the guys to relax in, and the tables give them the opportunity to bond and create deep connections with their teammates.” The added safety features, coupled with the timing of the delivery, were particularly important to PWT. Upon delivery of the new coach, Prevost hosted a training session for the PWT maintenance team, at their facility, to show the mechanics the differences in the new coach. The Prince George Cougars are part of the Western Hockey League (WHL), a junior league based in Western Canada and the northwestern United States. The team travels more than 25,000 miles per season in wintery Canadian conditions—from Portland, OR, to Winnipeg, Canada. “Our Prevost is more than just transportation — it’s a critical member of our team,” said Beesley. “When our bright, shiny, reliable bus pulls into towns, it not only looks good, but gives us a great sense of pride to be riding in a Prevost.” Prevost manufactures premium intercity touring coaches, and produces conversion coaches for high-end motorhome and specialty conversion. Prevost has its main manufacturing facilities in Sainte-Claire, Quebec, Canada, and has 16 parts and service centers located throughout the United States and Canada. ABC Companies Jersey City Facility Expansion To Be Completed Ahead Of Schedule

Revamped, Expanded Jersey City, NJ, Location Supports Future Growth In New York Metro Area And Northeast Corridor

ABC Companies, exclusive distributor of Van Hool motorcoaches in North America, also involved in motorcoach sales, service and technical support announced that improvements to its Jersey City, NJ, facility are ahead of schedule. Originally slated for completion in late Spring of 2020, site upgrades are now projected to be finalized by mid-winter 2020, in order to accommodate a diverse range of customer needs throughout the New York Metro area and Northeast Corridor, spanning northern Virginia to Maine. After conducting a business assessment in 2019 which identified the Jersey City, NJ, facility as a “customer preferred” location, ABC moved to improve and expand the centrally-located operation. “It makes good business sense to target expansion into areas where customer demand is highest,” said Roman Cornell, president and chief commercial officer of ABC Companies. “The Northeast Corridor, and particularly the New York Metro area are rapid growth markets, and ABC is positioned to give customers a stronger competitive advantage within our Jersey City location. As we continue to expand our footprint, providing responsive, reliable products and services centered around improving fleet uptime remains our core focus.” “With this most recent expansion, several million dollars have been invested in the property. The Jersey City, NJ, site encompasses five acres, which will double the size of existing operations to include equipment sales, service and body shop services, and a new 20,000square-foot parts warehouse with parts sales counter. Along with OEM Van Hool parts and accessories, customers can also choose from over 200,000 parts SKUs – featuring top-brand coach and transit parts for today’s most popular makes and models. An inventory of new Van Hool coaches, including the restyled 2020 Van Hool CX45 and 35, as well as an expansive inventory of popular preowned motorcoach makes and models will be available on site for inspection, test drives and sale, including new ABC Express Van Hool models for fast customer delivery.” “ABC’s commitment to continuous improvement is demonstrated at this new facility. Users can expect a premium customer service experience, delivered by our highly-trained and highly-skilled staff who excel in delivering professional sales and service support, as well as parts knowledge and expertise,” said Mike Laffan, senior vice president/eastern region at ABC Companies. “The expansion will also create approximately 15 to 20 new jobs within the local labor force, as ABC recruits for new hires to fill a variety of positions. ABC has also supported the Jersey City community through varied charitable donations and affiliations over the years. The company is planning a ‘re-opening’ celebration in early 2020, and anticipates exponential growth in equipment and parts

sales, and service contracts directly resulting from its expanded operations.” ABC Companies is a provider to the transportation industry with product and service offerings that cover a full spectrum of operational needs including new and pre-owned full-size highway coach equipment along with transit specialty vehicles. ABC supports customers with a comprehensive after sale service network for service and repairs, collision services, OEM and quality aftermarket parts needs for transit, motorcoach and heavy-duty equipment from 10 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, private and municipal financing and leasing options are available through the company's financial services group. BYD Receives Bus Order From CTA

BYD (Build Your Dreams) recently announced at the California Transit Association’s annual fall conference in Monterey that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation has ordered 130 of its batteryelectric K7M buses, the largest single order of battery-electric buses to date in the United States, according to a BYD release. “The order is a milestone for BYD as it continues its green dream to bring innovation and cutting-edge zero-emission technologies to forward-thinking communities and private enterprises. The LADOT purchase is a signal to the market that zeroemission buses are here to stay, and that their use will continue to spread. “The project fits perfectly with the City of Los Angeles’ ‘Green New Deal,’ a set of sustainability goals that include converting the entire LADOT fleet to zero-emission buses by 2030. The City of Los Angeles has set a bold goal of converting every city vehicle to zero-emission technology by 2050.” According to BYD, it is estimated the 130 buses will reduce greenhouse gas emis-

Page 70

sions by 8,225 metric tons per year and by 98,700 metric tons over the buses’ 12-year life, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 81 percent compared to LADOT’s compressed natural gas buses. “We applaud LADOT for its bold leadership, ambition, and desire to improve the air quality for the City of Los Angeles,” said BYD North America President Stella Li. “BYD buses will be an important component of the city’s efforts to meet its sustainability goals. We are proud to partner with an agency that shares our green dream.” The buses will be built at BYD’s coach and bus factory in Lancaster, CA. BYD’s zero-emission buses exceed Federal Transit Administration “Buy America” requirements, incorporating more than 70 percent U.S. content. BYD has both a unionized workforce and a Community Benefits Agreement, which sets goals for hiring veterans, single parents, second chance citizens, and others fac-

ing hurdles in obtaining manufacturing employment. “The 30-foot K7M has 22 seats, a range of up to 150 miles, and can be charged in 2.5 to 3 hours. The K7M is one of BYD’s top products. It has no air emissions, and runs quietly, improving quality of life wherever it operates.” BYD offers a 12-year warranty on its batteries. LADOT has been working with BYD since 2014, when it conducted a 90-day trial of a battery-electric bus. In January 2017, city officials introduced the first of four K9S battery-electric buses acquired by LADOT with a grant from the California Energy Commission. “LADOT is one of more than a dozen customers who have shown their confidence in BYD’s product performance and service to make additional orders. Earlier this year, Anaheim Resort Transportation added to its initial purchase by ordering 40 more buses from BYD. With this purchase, BYD has now sold more than 460 electric buses to customers in southern California, including airports, universities, private operators and transit agencies.” The official sponsor of Mother NatureTM, BYD said it is dedicated to creating a truly zero-emission ecosystem offering technology for the solar electricity generation, energy storage to save electricity and battery electric vehicles powered by clean energy. BYD has 220,000 employees across the globe, including nearly 1,000 in North America. For more information, visit www.BYD.com. Signing agreement ceremony

ElDorado Launches Two New Buses And An Updated Favorite As The Company Celebrates Its 40th Year

ElDorado, manufacturer of light and medium-duty commercial buses and a subsidiary of REV Group (REVG), launches two new steel cage construction models, adding to its existing steel cage product – the Advantage. Marking 40 years of manufacturing, ElDorado is expanding its product range to a total of six models, all which exceed the seven year/100,000 mile durability, side impact and roll-over testing standards. “Taking to the roads in 2020 is the new Advance, a narrow body, steelcage bus. The Advance features front-end visibility, which reduces blind spots and improves safety. Available in non-CDL configurations, the Advance has dual rear wheels which allow for more stability than a van. And for durability, the floor, roof and walls are all made with a high-strength rustproofed steel. “Also new to ElDorado is the heavy-duty Atlas, the largest and first-ever steel bus to be built on the Ford F550 chassis. The Atlas offers an array of floor plans to choose from, due to the flat floors without wheel-

well interference. Atlas’ interior is designed with the new standard FRP wall and ceiling materials, which create a clean and modern appearance.”

According to the REV Group, the Advantage, a favorite since its launch in 2012 and ElDorado’s first steel cage bus, has an updated look for 2020 with a newly styled front cap and one-piece snap-lock rub rail molding. The all stainless steel door and lift frames cover the screws, which discourages rust and ensures durability by resisting sagging. An updated rear wheelchair door location allows more room on the rear wall for versatile seating arrangements. “Over the past 40 years, ElDorado has built a strong family legacy around the re-

liability, consistency and performance of our products,” said Brian Perry, president of Commercial Segment, REV Group. “Looking ahead to the next 40 years, we are further solidifying our legacy of ensuring the safest and most durable buses, with the launch of the Advance and Atlas and updating the Advantage.” The Advance, Atlas and Advantage will be built in REV’s Salina manufacturing plant, and the new Advance and Advantage will have first deliveries in March 2020, with the orders opening for the Atlas in March 2020, and deliveries in July 2020. ElDorado, a subsidiary of a subsidiary of REV Group, manufactures light and medium-duty commercial buses for public transit, paratransit, airport, parking, hotel/ resort, group tour, assisted living, church and university transportation markets.
