Every driver must also take a 45-minute assessment test. Major objectives with this test include finding those candidates who are proficient in areas of customer service and safety. “The (assessment test) helps us determine what kind of decisions a potential driver would make under certain circumstances, and to what level they will succeed. Successful candidates must score in the upper half of a bell curve when taking the assessment,” Benedict said. “We only hire the best. Part of the interviewing process is really a screening

There are usually two or three people involved with each interview, and probably five or so people in our company will have exposure to a driving candidate before that person is actually hired. This allows us to receive different opinions from our own people about each candidate.” Another important factor in providing superior customer service sounds simple, but is something not taken for granted at either of the three companies headed by Benedict — appearance. For example, company drivers must not only have a good personality, they should also “look the part” by having a neat appearance, according to Benedict. They also must be articulate. “We work hard to pick the cream of the crop during the hiring process. We can teach new drivers a lot of different areas of the job, such as destination knowledge, but we can’t teach personality,”
David Benedict and his key personnel, many of whom are shown on the opening page, have helped grow different transportation options for the Philadelphia region and beyond.
Benedict said. Once hired, new drivers for both David Thomas Trailways and David Thomas Transportation undergo extensive training from various departments within the two companies. This includes instruction about different types of bus and/or coach equipment that they will be driving.

For the drivers who have those skills, they can either move to the motorcoach side, full or part time. We have several highly skilled employees who were promoted to fulltime motorcoach drivers after driving school buses. We are glad to offer that opportunity.” There can be many day-to-day decisions that have to be made when drivers are on the road. At David Thomas Trailways, however, when drivers do come across issues they can’t solve, they know protocol calls for them to contact company headquarters for help. “There will always be an official here who can make an important decision if a driver needs guidance on what to do in a given situation,” Benedict said. There are approximately 80 people who work at the three companies headed by Benedict. Along with drivers, other people employed include mechanics, members of the night crew who clean vehicles, dispatchers, various types of managers and administrators, sales people, a safety director, tour planners, a graphic artist and an IT expert. All three companies are headquartered at the same location in Philadelphia, in a recently converted facility that includes 10,000 square feet of office and 10,000 square feet of maintenance space. “We also developed 3 acres directly behind our facility last year to build a 100-bus parking lot. In total, we use 6.5 acres. This includes four maintenance bays. Our facility has been converted into a full-service motorcoach operation. All of our equipment maintenance, servicing and cleaning is done inhouse,” Benedict said. “We have also replaced all of the lighting with LED. ethodical growth, by way of referrals, marketing and maintaining happy customers, has led the three companies headed by Benedict to continued expansion over the years. It all started in 1980, when Benedict began David Tours & Travel in an effort to organize trips to the nearby Atlantic City, NJ, casino market. A few years earlier, New Jersey voters passed a referendum that approved casino gambling for Atlantic City, thus springing a growth market for travel in the area. “Our company started as a one-man show. The Atlantic City casinos opened in 1978, and they were the only gaming business in the area,” Benedict said. “We began providing group tours. A few years later, we became an ARC (Airlines Reporting Corporation)-appointed travel agency and continued to grow while entering the leisure travel business.” Throughout the 1980s, David Tours & Travel developed many tours that were sold to other tour operators, travel agents and bus companies. For example, the company introduced several seafood tour packages to nearby Baltimore, MD, which became extremely popular. In 1997, Benedict purchased his first bus and started his motorcoach operation (now known at David Thomas Trailways). This business grew to 10 buses by 2000, the same year the facility in Philadelphia was purchased that now houses all three companies. “The bus company began as a way to better serve our tour business, but along the way its own identity was established. I never expected

“We continue to grow in this area by offering the same high level of service as our motorcoach operation,” Benedict said. “Our school bus drivers are all in uniform, just like those on the motorcoach side, and follow the same protocol. According to Benedict, today’s increased level of government regulations and bus inspections are making it more difficult for bus/coach companies to start in the industry. However, he does feel that those existing companies, following all of the rules and regulations and maintaining solid safety records, seem to be doing well. “It all comes down to focusing on your goals, as a company, and to not compromise. We (at David Thomas Trailways) need to keep the highest level of customer service, quality and safety standards in place. As long as we do that, we will continually attract additional institutional clientele,” Benedict said. “A lot of companies focus on working on price alone, but we focus on providing quality and service. We might not get the customer the first time we bid for a job, but a lot of times when customers have a bad experience, they will give us a try. We have a very good track record when it comes to keeping customers. We don’t cut corners.” Looking back at what has been accomplished in the past 34 years gives Benedict great pleasure as he helps his three companies plan for the future. He has found the transportation industry to be very fulfilling as well as challenging. “You have to love this industry to be successful. Being a bus operator is a 24/7 job and involves high risk. Every time you put a vehicle on the road there is a risk. You really have to love what you are doing. It’s not a 9 to 5 job,” Benedict said. “I’m still very ‘hands-on’ as president, giving advice and making decisions. I’m also active in the industry, such as being on the board for the Greater New Jersey Motorcoach Association and the Pennsylvania Bus Association. It’s important for me to be involved in the two states where our three
companies are very active. “Also, I participate in several peer groups involving different operators. One group meets every six weeks, while the other gets together on a quarterly basis. We discuss best practices.” Benedict said there are great benefits that come from networking with other bus operators. “You can’t be on an island in this business. You always need people and people need you. I quite often get calls where somebody’s bus is out of service or they need a bus cleaned, etc. We are glad to help,” he said. “Being active in the industry and with these peer groups not only helps our three companies remain successful, but our customers as well.” Contact: David Thomas Trailways, 14005 McNulty Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19154. By Rick Mullen, Busline Magazine Associate Editor
Public transportation continues to gain in importance as different U.S. population segments opt for travel alternatives other than the automobile. Busline Magazine recently spoke with an executive from the award-winning MTA to find out how this system is meeting the ever-growing needs of its new bus ridership. hile the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation, is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States, it is bus transit that anchors its operations. “We are primarily a bus transit operation,” said MTA Administ rator and CEO Robert L. Smith. “We operate 68 fixed-routes, accounting for 20 million revenue miles per year. Depending on what is being measured, such as budget, miles traveled, number of vehicles, etc., MTA is somewhere in the top 15 largest transit properties in the United States.” Among MTA’s services are local and commuter buses, light rail, Metro Subway, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) train service and a paratransit system. “Our fleet includes 750 buses, 100 subway cars and 53 light rail cars,” Smith said. “Currently, we have 42 locomotives on

said. “As a result, all of MTA’s bus purchases are now diesel-electric hybrids. Indeed, more than 50 percent of our fleet is currently comprised of diesel-electric buses. We now have fewer than 150 ‘dirty’ diesel buses and the remainder of our fleet are either ‘clean’ diesel or diesel-electric hybrids.” MTA is also a statewide agency. It acts as the grantor of federal funds for local operated transit systems throughout the state of Maryland. “We provide planning assistance, some engineering assistance, spec writing and other services to the state’s locally operated transit systems,” Smith said. “Today, MTA logs well over 110 million trips annually, about 68 million of which are on the bus.” MTA can trace it roots back to the early 1800s, when it was originally founded as a rail line, according to Smith. “We didn’t begin official bus lines until 1909. In 1915, the Baltimore Transit Company was formed as a subsidiary under one of the local utilities, United Railway and Electric Company,” Smith said. “By 1971, we had transitioned from The Baltimore Transit Company to the Metropolitan Transit Authority. In 1973, the authority took over most suburban bus operations and rail commuter services. “In the 1980s, we got back into the rail business in a big way. We opened our light rail line in 1982 and our Metro Subway System in 1983, which runs from Baltimore north to Reisterstown.” The authority changed its named to the

Maryland Transit Administration in 2001. “The vast majority of our riders are commuters traveling to and from work,” Smith said. “MTA runs commuter bus services statewide. For the Baltimore region, we run commuter buses into downtown Washington, D.C., and also downtown Baltimore. “Many of our routes operate 24/7. We have a good number of folks who don’t own automobiles in the area, and they rely on us exclusively for their travel needs.” Smith said MTA meets with two ridership committees on a monthly basis to help address the riding public’s needs and to continually improve the system. “We have a Citizen’s Action Committee that has been around for decades. They serve as advisors and advocates for better transit,” Smith said. “We have another committee that provides feedback as it relates to people with disabilities and accessible transportation, be it buses, trains or our paratransit service.” MTA calls its paratransit operation Mobility/Paratransit, and it operates more than 300 vehicles. According to the authority, this ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) certified door-to-door service is for people with disabilities who are unable to ride or navigate fixed-route public transportation, including lift-equipped buses. “Like many other transit operations in the country, Mobility/Paratransit is growing faster than we can keep up,” Smith said. “We’ve been using local private taxi companies to help us meet this demand.” According to the MTA, its Call-a-Ride Service or C.A.R. Service is an on-demand, premium taxi/sedan service that provides increased independence for people with disabilities. The service is available to MTA-certified Mobility/Paratransit customers who meet the eligibility requirements. MTA Call-aRide Service is not part of MTA Mobility/Paratransit service, but rather is a separate and distinct MTA service provided under contract by participating area taxi and sedan companies. “MTA will pay up to $20 per taxi ride,” Smith said. “The customer pays any amount over $20. This service has grown significantly the past few years. It is something our passengers take advantage of as they see it as an option or alternative to the fixed-route and/or Mobility/Paratransit services.” Top MTA priorities are safety and customer service. The authority recently received a safety award presented by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), which was announced at the organization’s annual Bus & Paratransit Conference in May in Kansas City, MO. APTA presented MTA with a Gold Award for Security in the bus systems with 20 million or more passenger trips annually category. The
award honored MTA for forming its Service Safety Task Force to enhance on-board safety for its bus operators. “I am really proud of this award,” Smith said. “We were looking to find ways to make our employees safer while out on the street. It is something that we take very seriously. We not only want our riding public to feel safe and secure, but our employees, as well. “Our No. 1 goal is safety first. We are 100 percent invested in ensuring that safety and security are No. 1. Right behind safety and security in importance is customer service. We have a high average tenure among our employees. MTA employs 3,300 people, of which
about 2,300 are actual service delivery personnel. We are involved in the community. MTA sponsors several events in the Baltimore region. We really get our employees involved and customer service is something that we emphasize. “Our governor has a very aggressive goal to double ridership in the state of Maryland. In order to make that goal, we must focus on customer service. “We strive to be an agile agency that understands where people live, where they work, where they shop, what medical facilities they visit, etc. We are trying to be agile enough with

The bolt-on, electric hybrid system runs post transmission on vehicles running gas, diesel, CNG, biodiesel, propane, or any other fuel source. It needs no facilities changes and has no batteries to ever replace. When the vehicle slows from 30-0 MPH, the hybrid’s patented variable torque motor provides braking assistance in order to capture the energy that may have been lost to heat with traditional brake use. That captured energy is stored in long-life ultracapacitors (not batteries), which release the energy on vehicle launch for an extra boost (right when fuel economy and pollution are traditionally at their worst). As a result, fuel economy is increased up to 30 percent. We expect over the next five to six years we will implement various portions of what comes out of the study.” One of the issues MTA will be looking into as it reviews transit service is how to best serve an increasing population of people who are returning to the urban core to live and work. “Urbanization is definitely a trend in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., region,” Smith said. “In our area, there are condos going up in neighborhoods that were once not

We have the Millennial Generation that is choosing to use public transit, car sharing services such as Zipcar, plus bicycles and biker trails. Meeting the needs of these urbanites is all part of our short- and long-range planning efforts.” Looking ahead, Smith said there many positives to be considered in the area of public transit in the Maryland region. “We are on a solid foundation as it relates to funding. We were recently added to the president’s (President Obama) budget for the funding of two new rail lines in our area,” he said. “We are continuing with our Bus Network Improvement Project and we are collaborating with planning organizations in the city of Baltimore and others in the region to ensure that we grow smart. “The state of Maryland is very focused on transit which is one of many ingredients that makes our region progressive, livable and sustainable. We are in an area of the country where transit is not only necessary, but accepted and desired by the riding public.” Contact: Maryland Transit Administration, 6 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD 21202-1614. Trinity Coach Adds 4 New MCI J4500 Coaches
Rustad Bus Service Has New MCI J4500
Trinity Transportation, Wyandotte, MI, has recently received four 2014 models of the MCI J4500. “What’s made us happiest has been the reliability,” said Austin Arksey, Trinity sales director.” Trinity’s latest J4500s have Wi-Fi and 110-volt outlets at passenger seats as well as three-point seatbelts and standard J4500 amenities, including an entertainment system, tiered seating, and MCI’s patented spiral entryway. Standard safety features include electronic stability control, tire-pressure monitoring and a fire-suppression system. Arksey said, “Throughout the service process, they checked in with us. We know things are going to happen with coaches, but we want the comfort of knowing that we can call someone and have support.” The Trinity fleet includes 35 motorcoaches as well as mini-coaches, school buses and vans, for a total of more than 300 vehicles. Trinity Coach is a part of Trinity Transportation Group, which also includes Trinity Transportation, Trinity Cars and Trinity (Airport) Shuttle. The company was founded in 1981 as a van and sedan service. Current owner, Jerry Sheppard, purchased the company in 1995 and started building. The company moved into school-bus contracts and bought its first coaches in 2000. Sheppard numbered his first coach 1771—a combination of the ages of his three children that year. Today, with about 500 employees and several southeast Michigan locations, Trinity offers tours and charters throughout the United States, including month-long trips to Alaska. It has served events including the Ford 500, the Super Bowl and the NHL Winter Classic. It also operates line-run service to Cedar Point, an Ohio-area amusement park. More information is at www.trinitytransportation.com. Motor Coach Industries (MCI), headquartered in Des Plaines, IL, is an intercity coach manufacturer in the United States and Canada, with sales, service and repair facilities in both countries. Visit www.mcicoach.com.
Rustad Bus Service, Kerkhoven, MN, which operates Rustad Tours, opted for tan leather seats, cup-holders, woodgrain flooring, flat-screen video monitors, 110-volt outlets at each seat and Wi-Fi in its new J4500. “It’s a fantastic coach,” said Charles (Chuck) Rustad, who, in leading the company his father founded, has purchased 11 new and many more pre-owned MCI coaches over the course of his career. “Our tours are hand-made,” said Rustad. “We have a lot of repeat tours and always add new ones. Our tours are set up for a rural clientele, but we’re getting more people from the Metro area.” Customer service may be behind Rustad’s success. Passengers leave their cars parked overnight indoors at Rustad’s 14,800-square-foot garage and service shop. Chuck Rustad attributes the perk to his wife, Jean, who helps run the business. Earlier, the Rustads’ three now-grown children would wash the cars. The company started in January, 1947, when brothers George and Herb Rustad bought three school-bus routes to serve the Kerkhoven School District. In the 1950s, they expanded to 11 routes and gained authority to transport adults within Minnesota. In the 1960s, the brothers bought their first coach-style bus—and their first MCI. In the 1970s, they began running longer charter trips outside of Minnesota. In 1977, Herb sold his share of the business to George, who, with his son, Chuck, started Rustad Tours. Today Rustad Tours serves customers from about a 125-mile radius, with a fleet that also includes three MCI E4500 coaches. Its tours cover 50 states and nine Canadian Provinces.

New Denver Union Station Bus Concourse Opens For Service
The Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) recently marked the opening of the Union Station Bus Concourse with a ribbon-cutting celebration that included remarks from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, state and local officials, RTD General Manager Phil Washington, and other dignitaries. The bus concourse is a component of the new RTD Intermodal Hub. Denver's Union Station is located on the edge of the city's central business district. Twenty acres of former rail yards were converted into an urban transit district that has light rail, commuter and intercity rail, bicycle and bus routes, and pedestrian pathways. The Union Station Bus Concourse is situated directly beneath the rail station. It is 980 feet in length, with a 22-gate underground bus concourse that services 16 regional, express, and local bus routes. The terminal also serves as a subterranean pedestrian concourse that connects transportation programs distributed across the site. RTD officals say vivid colors and natural lighting help passengers orient themselves. The structure also features terrazzo floors and yellow glass tilework along with a series of skylights and glass pavilions for extra light. Economists estimate that the project has already triggered more than $1 billion in private mixed-use investment on surrounding property.
Royal Excursion recently took delivery of two Temsa TS 35 motorcoaches. The company, located near South Bend, IN, was named among the “2013 Indiana Companies To Watch,” and has been operating as a locally owned & operated transportation company since 1998. It has a fleet of full-size motorcoaches, mini-coaches, town cars, and limousines. With its new mid-size Temsa, it now has even more offerings. AT&T Charters Buys New Van Hool “I think we're on a first name basis with every one of our customers,” said Denny House, of Louisburg, NC, based AT&T Charter Service. “We run 13 coaches and our tour company offers more than 100 tours a year, so it takes some effort. That sort of personal attention is what makes us special. When customers need help at odd hours, they not only get someone on the phone — it's someone they know.” The same family owned company won a 2009 award as one of the nation's seven most innovative motorcoach operators and still has its office in Bobby and Ann House’s family home, where it began with a used coach in 1989. The company’s fleet is one of the most modern in North Carolina's Research Triangle. Ann House, a country music enthusiast, took the family on an annual trek to Nashville, TN. One year she decided to charter a bus, and bring along some friends. After three more successful trips, the family decided to buy a used coach and go into the business. AT&T Charter serves schools, colleges, churches and businesses in North Carolina and southern Virginia with luxury charter service, while sister company, A&B Tours, offers prepackaged, fully escorted tours to destinations throughout the United States and Canada. AT&T recently took delivery of a 2014 Van Hool CX 45.
