eing a family-owned and operated transportation company, the evolution of Birnie Bus Service began shortly after World War II when Tim Birnie’s parents, Martin K. and MaryJo Birnie, started working with MaryJo’s brother, who had a small transportation company in place. In 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Birnie purchased the bus company and formed the corporation in 1960. Thirteen years later, the business underwent a dramatic change in size and focus as it became the major carrier for the Rome City School District, taking 80 percent of all routes and a 5-year contract. “The goals of Birnie Bus Service have always been the same — to grow our core businesses; grow our team of valuable employees; take advantage of ever increasing opportunities such as privatization of school transportation; and grow our charter services across the country.” position within any given bus company has greater contact with the customer base than drivers. Therefore, officials at Birnie Bus Service place a high emphasis on driver hiring and training programs that have been in place for years and continue to evolve. “Next to having a clean driving record
and background check, our bus drivers must possess solid customer service skills and be flexible,” Tim Birnie said. “This is important because every day in the bus business can be different. There are constantly new challenges to deal with, such as changes in weather, passenger behavior, road conditions and detours. A good
driver is able to think fast on his/her feet.” White added that driver training at Birnie Bus Service is conducted in-house. “We meet and exceed state standards with our training programs. This includes refresher courses given to existing drivers,” White said. “It’s important that their driving skills stay sharp. “In the interview process, we give potential employees a three-page questionnaire. We look at their responses and body language to see if they are a good fit for our company. When hiring a driver, we try to find out if that person would be best driving students, motorcoaches or for those with disabilities. It’s a pretty intense program that we put our drivers and monitors through.” Officials at Birnie Bus Service try to be creative as well when providing training. “One of the new things we did this year was bring in a guest speaker during one of our training programs. The speaker provided some new ideas and ways of looking at things. The response we received from our employees was very positive,” Tim Birnie said. “Finding good drivers is tough, but keeping good drivers is easy because we treat them right. It’s the same philosophy we use for all of our people.” According to Tim Birnie, his company has been blessed over the years by being located in an area where people tend to possess strong work ethics and appreciation for the local climate. “One of our biggest challenges as a company is dealing with the winter weather in upstate New York. A large majority of the people we have working for us have been brought up in the northeast. They are used to dealing with winter weather and winter driving,” he said. Our company has a number of these buses on the road and they have been successful for us. They include luxury seating, restrooms, luggage racks, reading lights, DVD players, stereo systems and storage. Our charter fleet also includes such amenities as Wi-Fi and satellite TV,” Tim Birnie said. “For some of our college shuttle, transit and demand-response work, we’ve made a commitment to IC Bus and its new commercial AC Series small shuttle. And we continue to purchase school buses from IC Bus as part of our school transportation fleet. “All in all, we have a very diversified fleet.” He added that officials at Birnie Bus Service have found success over the years working with IC Bus. “We feel they put together a good product and believe their service is excellent,” Tim Birnie said. “As a Trailways affiliate,

AN EXPO WELCOME from Mike Scanlon APTA Chair Dear Public Transportation Colleagues: On October 2-5, public transportation professionals from across the world will gather in New Orleans at the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) once-every-three-years International EXPO, held in conjunction with its Annual Meeting. EXPO, the largest public transit-related conference in the world that showcases the latest innovations, products, and services in the industry, is the mustattend event. This year, we are delighted that the Regional Transit Authority will serve as our host, and you won’t want to miss the Host Forum: “The Robust Recovery Underway in New Orleans.” With more than 650 exhibitors displaying the latest advancements and state-of-the-art technology, with hands-on demonstrations, and with tremendous amounts of literature and background information available, you can walk the show floor (or, in other words, you can traverse the 280,000 NSF and close to 23 miles of aisle carpet) and gain opportunity after opportunity to move your system or business forward. EXPO is held in conjunction with APTA’s Annual Meeting, which means you can expect a wideranging lineup of educational sessions, general forums, technical tours, and extensive networking opportunities. There will be a focus on such current hot topics as cyber security; managing when disasters hit; and innovative thinking about existing revenue — and developing new revenue. There will be a concentration on authorization, high-speed rail, going green, and contracting. There will be two technical tours that follow the Annual Meeting (the streetcar expansion project and the New Carrollton facility). There will also be a special opportunity to give of your time and energy to help rebuild St. Bernard’s Parish — one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. Once again, APTA will host the Bus Technical, Maintenance and Procurement Workshop in conjunction with the Annual Meeting and EXPO (same dates, October 2-5). The workshop offers transit bus maintenance, procurement and materials professionals the opportunity to meet, discuss and share the latest topics in their industry, all while having access to the conference and EXPO. I have greatly enjoyed my past year as APTA Chair. While it was always fascinating and sometimes surprising, I can honestly say that one of the most rewarding aspects was the opportunity to work closely with dedicated and talented public transit professionals from throughout the world. So let me close out my Chair duties by welcoming all of you to New Orleans. Together, we’ll let the good times roll! Sincerely,
Mike Scanlon, APTA Chair

Proterra’s “Bus Of Tomorrow” The EcoRide™ BE-35 Battery-Electric Bus
M
ajor essentials that are needed for “the bus of tomorrow” are expected to include zero emissions, noted reliability and strong infrastructure support. According to officials from Proterra, “This bus of tomorrow is available today at a commercially competitive price — the company’s fast-charge EcoRide™ BE-35 battery-electric bus.” Now in use at several locations, the 35-foot bus offers seating close to a 40-foot vehicle. The composite body bus, built in Greenville, SC, is designed for an 18-year life span and is well suited for 24/7 urban bus operations. Among the “game changers” for the EcoRide™ BE-35 are Proterra’s 10-minute charge FastFill™ charging system and 2- to 4-hour (30 to 50 miles typical) repeated route capabilities, according to Proterra Director of Business Development Joshua Goldman. “The FastFill™ is an up to 500-kilowatt electric bus charging system that can recharge the EcoRide’s™ batteries from empty to full in less than 10 minutes,” Goldman said. The charging unit is comprised of both software and hardware to rapidly charge the TerraVolt™ Energy Storage System on the EcoRide™, with a greater than 92 percent energy charge efficiency in as little as 6 minutes. While such power transfer normally might require a substantial grid connection to feed the fast charge rate, company officials say that Proterra’s proprietary architecture allows for lower cost and lower impact grid connections while maintaining high charge rates. According to the company, Proterra’s Page 28

TerraVolt™ Energy Storage System, ProDrive System and FastFill™ charge stations provide a solid solution for fleet vehicle operators with the following results: n An ability to use battery-electric vehicles as a one-to-one replacement of diesel driven vehicles for heavy-duty routes spanning the entire day, eliminating the need to return to vehicle depot for battery charging throughout the day; n Reduces the cost of zero emission fleets given lower individual vehicle and infrastructure costs versus the higher costs of hydrogen alternatives; n Lower on-board energy requirements given charging capability, resulting in lower individual vehicle weight and investment costs; n Significantly reduced maintenance costs resulting from absence of mechanical parts in a battery-electric drive system; and, n Wide approach and departure tolerances which enable on-route placement of charging stations. Another key feature of the EcoRide™ BE-35 is its composite body, designed for extra long life, low weight and non-conductive safety, according to the company. “The TerraVolt lithium-titanate batteries used in the EcoRide™ BE-35 provide for safe chemistry, a wide temperature operating range and 4to 10-times longer cycle life than typical lithium batteries used in electric cars,” Goldman said. “One of the great features of our bus is that it gets between 17 and 29 miles per gallon (diesel equivalent range), which is significantly better than competing solutions.”
He added there are other savings involved with the EcoRide™ BE-35. Because the bus is not the first heavy-duty vehicle to use a composite body, available data shows repairs are 80 percent less expensive than those of a steel body bus, Goldman said. Also, the heavy-duty motor of the EcoRide™ BE-35 has fewer moving parts, requires no constant oil changes and should be robust enough to last the vehicle’s life, according to Proterra. As for the brakes, with more than 90 percent regeneration of energy from braking to the battery taking place, brake systems should last longer with less frequent repairs and replacements. Answering The Call
P
roterra, headquartered in Golden, CO, was founded in 2004 by Dale Hill with a vision to design and manufacture worldleading advanced technology in heavy-duty vehicles that are powered solely by clean domestic fuels. After launching a successful fleet of CNG hybrid-electric buses for another company in the 1990s that are still in use in Denver, CO, Hill formed Proterra. The goal was to develop and deliver the “bus of tomorrow” to meet a need expressed by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). “Due to his past success, the FTA approached Dale Hill in 2004 and asked him to develop a fuel cell bus of tomorrow. He responded that he would make a battery-dominate hybrid bus that would feature a fuel cell serving as a hybrid

In 2008, we also started developing a fast-charge electric bus based on some of our initial successes with the battery we chose for the hybrid fuel cell vehicle.” Soon after the start of Proterra, the company recognized the benefits of its TerraVolt™ batteries and their inherently safe chemistry. The development of the EcoRide™ and FastFill™ charging system followed. With the launch of the EcoRide™ BE35, Proterra has become a leading innovator in zero emissions commercial vehicle solutions. Its technology is expected to help transit agencies deliver clean, quiet running, rider and neighborhood friendly vehicles that meet government regulations and local mandates, according to the company. In fact, Proterra has been recognized by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as being the first to deliver a full-size stock fuel costs come down significantly. “The current EcoRide™ is fast-charge, plug-in transit vehicle that meets California’s Zero capable with a 30- to 50-mile range. A
ny company that focuses on new technology and ideas is greatly benefited by partners with the same goals. Proterra has had several partners throughout its history among transit, finance and government entities that share the company’s vision of safe, cost effective and clean transportation. “This partner list is growing to include our most recent investors who are sure to take our business to the next level,” Goldman said. Groups helping Proterra succeed to the next level come in the form of both public and private partnerships. On the public side, many transit and government agencies remain active in demanding clean technology, according to Goldman. On the private side, meanwhile, Proterra’s vendors continue to provide key components and technology that come in the form of chargers, batteries, motors, etc. Proterra has also benefited from private investment firms who look at technology as a solid return on investment. Goldman credits several transit agencies in helping get Proterra’s projects off the ground and into transit service. “We are blessed to have strong partners as our early adopters. This includes Foothill Transit, in West Covina, CA; VIA Metropolitan Transit, in San Antonio, TX; and StarMetro, in Tallahassee, FL, among others,” he said. “All these agencies Continued On Page 63

ADVERTORIAL
From Voith Turbo
Light Trucks, Midibuses And School Buses Can Now Brake Wear-Free Voith Turbo is introducing the new Magnetarder at the APTA Expo 2011, being held in New Orleans, LA, on October 2-5. The new retarder stands out by its exceptional low weight and can be retrofitted without any modifications to the driveline. In the home market of Germany, it’s available as an ex-works option in virtually all Mercedes-Benz Atego mid-size trucks. IVECO has issued a retrofit approval for
the Eurocargo. In the midibus market, the Voith Magnetarder is already used as series-installed equipment at Anadolu Isuzu, Turkey, and at SOR in the Czech Republic. According to the company, the Voith Magnetarder operates with the world’s most powerful permanent magnets. Weighing only 86 pounds (39 kilograms), it is the lightest secondary retarder, braking
buses and trucks in the 7.5–16 ton range comfortably and safely. It also convinces by its excellent braking powers with a braking torque of up to 480 brake horsepower (650 Nm). The Magnetarder backs up the service brake so efficiently that over 60 percent of all braking operations can be performed by this secondary unit. This is added by a gain in comfort owing to reduced gear-shifting movements and tangentially higher average speeds. The Magnetarder runs directly on the prop shaft, so that the shaft does not have to be shortened when the retarder is installed. The patented principle is universally applicable, easy to install and highly cost-effective. This makes the Magnetarder attractive, both as original equipment and also for retrofits. During test drives in the Swiss Alps, on the Brenner and the San Bernardino Pass with extremely steep and long descents, the Magnetarder proved itself in a 7.5-ton truck with a trailer. It also stood out in practical driving tests with Atego customer vehicles. In a test vehicle, the front brake linings still had the same thickness as an original set even after 6,213 miles (10,000 kilometers). Further measurements showed that the application of the service brake could be reduced by more than 60 percent. School buses are also a key market segment for the Magnetarder. The transport of such precious cargo must be a priority and with the highest levels of safeguard possible. Voith Turbo is a specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications as well as ship propulsion systems. It’s a Group Division of Voith GmbH. Voith sets standards in the markets of energy, oil and gas, paper, raw materials, transportation and automotive. Founded in 1867, Voith employs almost 40,000 people, generates j5.2 billion in sales, operates in about 50 countries around the world and is today one of the biggest family-owned companies in Europe. state. This is due, in part, to the state’s population, ranked third highest in the country, as well as the historic dependence on this form of travel among New York educators and residents. Birnie Bus Service officials have been busy over the years trying to promote the benefits of school bus privatization. “Obviously, I come with a prejudicial point of view on this subject, but we feel school districts from around the country that provide their own bus transportation could save a lot of money by going to privatization — letting private bus compa-
nies provide the bus service for them,” Tim Birnie said. “This is not to be negative about the bus drivers who work for school districts because they are good and dedicated people. “However, we have a different philosophy on transportation than some, and believe school districts can save millions of dollars through privatization. This saved money can then be used for education purposes in the classroom. There is a trend in place for more privatization, but we would like to see this trend move a little quicker.” As for the overall future of his company, Tim Birnie is optimistic that Birnie Bus Service will continue to grow its core businesses, continue to foster strong relationships with customers and employees, and take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves. “Our industry touches the lives of almost everyone — from school transportation to transit to charter service,” Tim Birnie said. “We at Birnie Bus Service look forward to the future by continually meeting the needs of customers through ‘safe, reliable and courteous’ transportation.” Contact: Birnie Bus Service, Inc., 248 Otis St., Rome, NY 13441. Better braking made easy. That’s what moves us. The new Voith Magnetarder: Higher economy, higher safety, higher driving comfort and higher eco-friendlyness. Thanks to its sensationally low weight of just 86 pounds and its enormously high braking power, the new Voith Magnetarder not only reduces wear on the service brake but also allows higher average speeds. The integration of the Magnetarder into the propshaft is a completely new way of installation, which is unique in the world market. Fitting or retrofitting trucks and coaches between
7.5 and 16 t has never been easier or more practical. In a field test, the Voith Magnetarder got an enthusiastic reception from drivers and operators. Because even after more than 6 000 test miles, the front brake pads still had the same thickness as a new original set. APTA Board Of Directors Selects Michael P. Melaniphy As APTA’s Next President In a unanimous vote the APTA Board of Directors named Michael P. Melaniphy to serve as the association’s next president and chief executive officer. Melaniphy has spent his entire career in public transportation, with 23 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. The selection is the culmination of an extensive process that sought input from all segments of APTA. Melaniphy was the unanimous recommendation of the Presidential
Selection Task Force, which conducted a wide-ranging search for the best candidate to replace William Millar, who is retiring October 31 after 15 years as APTA President. Melaniphy is currently vice president public sector for Motor Coach Industries. Prior to that, he worked at First Group and its predecessor companies, serving as general manager for public transit systems in Charlotte, NC; Wichita, KS; and Hamilton, OH; and as assistant general manager in Laredo, TX.

Melaniphy started his public transit career in college as a bus driver for the campus system at Indiana University, where he studied under well-known transportation Professor George Smerk. Melaniphy, who serves on the APTA Board of Directors, has long been active in APTA. He is first vice chair of the Business Member Board of Governors and chairs the APTA International EXPO Committee and the Awards Committee. He has served as a member of the APTA Nominating Committee as well as on critical APTA task forces including the Framework for the Future Task Force, Governance Task Force, and Reauthorization Task Force. He is a Leadership APTA graduate. "Michael Melaniphy is an outstanding choice to lead our association forward in this critical time," said APTA Chair Michael J. Scanlon. "He is eminently qualified and brings broad-based experience in both the public and private sectors. I am very pleased that we have found in Michael a leader who not only loves our industry and has dedicated his career to improving it, but also has the vision and leadership skills to move our industry forward." "The Presidential Selection Task Force unanimously recommended Michael Melaniphy to become APTA’s next president because we believe he is uniquely qualified to take our association to the next level," said APTA Vice Chair Gary Thomas, who serves as task force chair. "Michael’s extensive experience, his advocacy skills, strong management and business skills, and his dedication to and passion for public transportation are a perfect match for the attributes the APTA Board of Directors determined necessary for APTA’s next president." APTA President Millar added, "I have known and worked with Michael for many years and he is a superb choice to lead APTA. Also, I am delighted to have a Leadership APTA graduate succeed me. Michael will be an inspiring leader for our association and the excellent APTA staff." In accepting the presidency, Melaniphy said, "I am thrilled to be selected as APTA’s next president. I pledge to do my absolute best to serve all our members and ensure that our association is laser-focused on strengthening and improving public transportation. I am honored to be named Bill Millar’s successor. His leadership has brought our industry unprecedented success and I will build on his legacy to take our association to the next

News level of accomplishment and influence." The selection process began with APTA Chair Scanlon’s appointment of Thomas and
Michael P. Melaniphy
11 other APTA members at a meeting of the Board of Directors on Jan. 7, 2011. The task force worked on a schedule and process designed and vetted by the APTA Board of Directors. Once appointed, the task force competitively selected APTA member Krauthamer &
Associates to serve as its executive search firm. It also began to define the qualities most important in the next APTA president by reaching out to transit CEOs, transit board members, business members and APTA committees, and finalizing that list after obtaining guidance from the APTA Board of Directors in March. The task force then crafted a job description grounded in those qualities and began the recruitment process. Melaniphy was selected from among a large, diverse candidate pool that included 180 candidates. The task force narrowed the field over the course of a three-round review process that included several hours of interviews, review of written submissions, and vigorous background investigations for the finalists. Thomas summed up the work of the task force: "There were several extremely well qualified candidates and the final decision was a difficult one. It was very gratifying to have so many qualified candidates with such dedication and passion for our industry and association. As a task force, we are confident that we have selected the very best candidate to lead our association." "I want to thank the task force members for their hard work and dedication and con-
gratulate them on their outstanding choice," said APTA Chair Scanlon. In addition to Thomas, members of the task force are: David Armijo, principal, Armijo & Associates, Tampa, FL; Mattie P. Carter, commissioner, Memphis Area Transit Authority, TN; Flora Castillo, board member, New Jersey Transit, Newark, NJ; Greg Evans, vice president, Lane Transit District Board of Directors, Eugene, OR; Sharon Greene, principal, Sharon Greene & Associates, Laguna Beach, CA; Angela Iannuzziello, vice president, GENIVAR, Toronto, ON; Arthur Leahy, chief executive officer, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, CA; Jerome Premo, global transit director/executive vice president, AECOM, Los Angeles¸ CA; Diana Jones Ritter, managing director, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, NY; Peter Varga, chief executive officer, Interurban Transit Partnership, Grand Rapids, MI; and Phillip Washington, general manager, Regional Transportation District, Denver, CO. Melaniphy will officially assume the post on November 1, and will join APTA prior to that date to work with Millar until his October 31 retirement.

Bus Stop Shelters Deep In The Heart Of Texas The Hill Country Transit District (HCTD) serves a 9,000 square mile area deep in the heart of Central Texas and is known as the The HOP. It is a political subdivision of the state of Texas, and uses the trademark name The HOP to reflect how easy it can be to just “hop” on a bus and get around the community. This service area consists of nine growing counties that required two urban divisions serving five area cities with fixed-route and ADA complementary paratransit service. The HOP regularly coordinates trips for the rural and urban area passengers. In 2010 The HOP carried 400,000 passengers in its urban divisions, using 12 fixed-bus routes. The HOP fixed route buses drive over 500,000 miles annually. The HOP encourages use of the public transit system by all members of the general public, and encourages various agencies to ensure their clients are aware of transit services. To the maximum extent possible, HCTD, serving as the region’s existing transportation provider, works to meet transportation requirements through the use of the public transit system in several ways.
1. The HOP encourages users and agencies to use fixed-route service whenever possible. 2. The HOP provides an easy means for agencies to purchase tokens, multi-ride tickets,
and monthly passes for their clients for use on fixed-route service, and offers the sale of fare media to all transit users via mail and through local outlets. 3. The HOP provides travel training for agencies and groups, and for individuals. 4. Agencies and members of the general public can rely on the HOP as the transportation provider to continue to serve the area, connecting rural and urban service. The HOP also provides ADA complementary
paratransit service. Additionally, The HOP provides transit trips through various service agreements, working within the community to identify and meet transit needs. Prior to 2010, HCTD participated in the placement of more than 25 shelters in the Killeen Urban Division and 7 shelters in the Temple Urban Division. The HOP has worked with schools as well, resulting in the placement of passenger benches at fixed route bus stops. In 2010, The HOP began installation of an additional 100 passenger shelters throughout the urban areas as part of the New Freedom project. More than 120 new shelters have been ordered, and more than a third of those have already been installed. The shelters are painted the same classic green shade The HOP adopted for its color scheme and seen on its bus fleet. The shelters were designed and manufactured by HANDI-HUT, a Clifton, NJ, manufacturer (www.handi-hut.com), the lowest bidder meeting the stringent specifications. The shelters are a welcome amenity that encourages ridership and makes waiting time comfortable. Schedules are posted in the shelters. The distinctive green HOP shelters are highly visible, and are a welcoming haven to passengers, especially those seeking a comfortable place to sit and offering some weather protection while they wait for the next ride on The HOP.

The Next Generation Of The Paradigm Transportation Suite (PTS) Paradigm Technology Consulting, LLC (PTC) has released the next generation of its Paradigm Transportation Suite (PTS). It’s designed with interface tables to streamline integrations between PTS and other operational applications, and a new user interface focusing on ease-of-entry and work flow. One of the key integrations will be with Enghouse Transportation’s CoachWorks product. “With our new relationship, we are able to bring a comprehensive solution to the transportation industry by a single vendor,” stated Michael Gummel, Product Engineer for Paradigm Technology Consulting, LLC (PTC). Bridgette Hobart-Janeczko, CPA, President of PTC, adds that, “It was important for us to partner with a large, financially stable organization such as Enghouse Systems Ltd (Toronto Stock Exchange - ENG). It is based in North America, has been in the transportation industry for a number of years and has multiple solutions, all of which will benefit our customers. With the affiliation of our two organizations’ expertise and breadth of offerings, we are able to provide companies with a comprehensive turnkey solution.” Paradigm Transportation Suite (PTS) is the powerful, work force management-focused suite of applications for the transportation industry. PTS is designed to significantly reduce the high operating costs associated with processing driver trip reports, simplify driver and fleet management reporting and capture the wide range of information recorded by drivers.
PTS also provides extensive functionality for the management of human resources (HR), DOT compliance tracking, employee performance and advanced payroll calculations for labor management. Many of the systems that are on the market today have post-trip accounting that perform the basics, such as hours and rates. PTS does an exceptional job there as well, but the greatest differentiator is the ability of the system to handle unions, overtime pay, guaranteed pay, overlaps, rate management and HR compliance functionality. According to Michael Gummel, “The rules and guiding principles used to structure and govern employment, particularly in the transportation industry, are becoming strategic to a company’s human resources. For example, PTS handles much of the driverspecific information required by regulatory agencies, as well as I9, training, licenses, certifications, employee drug testing, illnesses and injuries, grievances and other complaints, performance reviews and terminations.” PTC is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. Founded in 1999, PTC has been working successfully with companies of all sizes to define, develop and implement exceptional business processes and technology solutions. PTC employs a dedicated team of highly accomplished, experience experts with strong backgrounds in business, finance and technology. PTC is headquartered in New Jersey. Alexander Dennis To Unveil New Look For Double Deck Range Officials from Alexander Dennis say all three options in the ADI product line-up – transit, commuter and open-top – are set to benefit from a new look that will be progressively rolled out over the next 18 months, including vehicles that will form part of significant new transit orders likely to be announced at the APTA EXPO in New Orleans. The new appearance comes on the back of fleet sales in recent years to Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Seattle. And, adding to the appeal of the high-capacity, three-axle Enviro500 models, ADI is also set to announce plans for a new, low height, “go anywhere” double deck range. The company says the buses will have the same carrying capacity as existing models (around 100) and retain the same maneuverability as the Enviro500. Because of the reduced height, the buses can open new route options in the USA and Canada. All ADI double deck products are fully Buy America Compliant. New Rotary Lift EFX60 Inground Scissor Lift Can Relieve Vehicle Downtime Rotary Lift is now offering the EFX60, a new heavy-duty inground scissor lift that incorporates patented design features to make lift setup and operation faster and easier. According to the company, the EFX60 uses Rotary Lift’s patented universal style lifting saddle with flip-up adapters to make lift set-up a breeze. The lift is compatible with the industry’s widest selection of lightweight adapters, many of which are third-party certified. The EFX60 has an infinite adapter adjustment range, enabling technicians to precisely position adapters exactly where they’re needed for proper lifting. Rotary Lift officials say the adapters also swivel, making it possible to pick up vehicles by either the frame or the axle. As a result, technicians using the EFX60 can properly lift and service any medium-duty or heavy-duty vehicle weighing up to 60,000 lbs. “The biggest complaint we hear about other inground scissor lifts is that they are difficult and time-consuming to set up,” explains Doug Spiller, Rotary Lift heavy duty product manager. “We designed the EFX60 to be faster and easier. Technicians can quickly set up the EFX60 with one hand. That means they get to work faster, for less downtime.”
The Rotary Lift product development team spent two years refining the heavy-duty inground scissor lift design for the EFX60. Part of Rotary

the company’s strenuous durability and performance standards. Knowing that scissor lifts are more prone to wear than other lift styles, Rotary ran the EFX60 for 30,000 test cycles — the equivalent of 15 to 30 years of service life. Rotary Lift’s EFX60 uses heavier, larger centering links. According to Rotary, the EFX60’s heavier pivot pins are 37 percent stronger and offer 12.5 percent more bearing surface area for extended service life. The pins are also protected by Rotary Lift’s exclusive Smartguard® corrosion protection. Finally, the company says EFX60’s reinforced cover plates are 59 percent stronger than others. “When you’re picking up trucks, buses and heavy equipment, you want to know that your lift is up to the task,” says Spiller. “The EFX60 is the strongest heavy-duty inground scissor lift you can buy. The lift’s superior strength also provides greater service life, reduced maintenance and better overall productivity.” Because technician safety is paramount, the Rotary Lift EFX60 also features a patented locking system. The EFX60 has been third-party tested by ETL and is ALI certified to meet ANSI safety and performance standards. It is made in the U.S.A. CoachCrafters, Inc. Announces Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Certification CoachCrafters, Inc. has announced that it has become certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) in the State of Florida. The certification enables the firm to compete for and perform contract work on all USDOT Federal Aid (FAA, FTA, FHWA) projects in Florida as a DBE contractor, sub-contractor, or material supplier. “It was a natural progression to apply for DBE certification after CoachCrafters became 55 percent woman owned earlier this year. It was a lot of work to obtain the certification– the volume of required paperwork was staggering. Fortunately CoachCrafters’ CEO, Anne Wolf, is a very detail oriented person,” said Jackie Guerra, V. P. of administration. The process will be repeated over time until CoachCrafters, Inc. has been certified in every possible state. “We passed the initial hurdle by being certified in our home state,” said Anne Wolf. “Now we are immediately focusing on a dozen or so key states which we’ve identified as being strategically important to our business plan. It’s our intention to pursue certification throughout the entire country, although the process is so paperwork intensive that it will take until next year for that to happen.” Anne Ryan, vice president of sales and marketing at CoachCrafters added, “I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from various transit agency officials who have historically struggled in trying to meet their DBE goals and are really excited that achieving these goals will become much easier.” CoachCrafters, Inc. has served public and private bus systems throughout the nation for over two decades. The company’s repair facility situated in Tavares, FL, offers service, solutions, and repairs. The mission of CoachCrafters, Inc. is to help public and private agencies maintain and enhance the value of their investment in transportation through proper maintenance.

Stertil-Koni Introduces Earthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift Stertil-Koni’s (www.stertil-koni.com), new Earthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift is now ALI/ETL certified and available for immediate sale in the United States. It has no connecting cables or wires and has a variable speed controller (patent pending). It also offers an advanced operating system with a graphical user interface that digitally displays lift speed, the weight bearing on the individual column, battery charge level, lift direction, lift extension measurement and more. Another feature is the self-regenerating power supply that can increase productivity. “The Earthlift’s patented Active Energy Retrieval (AER) System captures the kinetic energy generated by a raised vehicle as it descends on the lift and uses it to recharge its own batteries,” Jean DellAmore, Ph.D., Stertil-Koni USA president, said. “The AER makes the Earthlift ultra-energy-efficient, allowing it to provide an unheard of 27 lifting cycles under a full load.” DellAmore said that smaller loads mean even more lifting cycles from a single charge, but that all things being equal, the Earthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift allows users to
enjoy 35 percent more lifting cycles. He said that the Earthlift’s energy efficiency coupled with its ecologically responsible design make it the industry’s “biggest lift innovation with the smallest carbon footprint.”
The Earthlift’s components are 98 percent recyclable, its closed hydraulic system uses biodegradable Panolin oil, its electrical system complies with RoHs directives, and its deepcycle marine batteries can be completely recycled. The company says the green advantages can help companies earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Columns can be operated independently and

up to eight Earthlifts can be wirelessly linked in seconds, using Stertil-Koni’s ID Key technology. Once linked, the multiple lifts function as one seamless, synchronized system that delivers safe, smooth control even when load distribution is unbalanced. The Earthlift’s variable speed control allows the operator to adjust vehicle height with accuracy, allowing procedures like a gearbox replacement to be undertaken with ease. Programming options also enable users to adjust the maximum lifting height and to perform on-demand fault diagnoses. The Earthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift has an 18,000-pound load capacity and comes with 14-inch pickup forks standard, allowing it to safely accommodate super-single and military tires, according to the tire manufacturer’s instructions. The lift is designed to provide a 10inch clearance between the column and the vehicle, preventing contact in the event of an on-lift tire or suspension failure. The Earthlift Wireless Mobile Column Lift is certified by the Automotive Lift Institute Inc. (ALI) (www.autolift.org/cert.htm) and the Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL).

New Rental Option For The Full Distinctive Systems Product Line Now Available The past few years have been difficult for the industry due to the challenging economy. Many in the Motorcoach and Travel Industry have found that the availability of investment capital has been significantly constricted. However, the needs of these operators have not changed. They still require the most advance software available to help them efficiently operate their companies. Distinctive Systems Inc. is now offering a new rental option that can allow those who may not want to make an initial capital investment in software to utilize the Distinctive Systems software applications. Distinctive Systems products are now available via a new software rental option. This rental option is an alternative to full purchase of DSL software. Both methods of procurement (rental or purchase) are available across the entire Distinctive Systems product offerings. Distinctive Systems Inc. President Don Greenglass said: "We are very happy to be able to offer any North American Operator all six of our product versions with the choice of renting the usage of the products, or outright purchasing. By having these alternatives available, prospective clients can concentrate on choosing the edition (and functionality) that makes the most sense for their company. The method of acquiring access to the products becomes secondary to deciding on which applications and edition is the best fit for them." The company says it is the intent of this new offering to make all of the DSL products available to all operators in affordable options, according to the needs of each organization. As an example of the affordability of the rental option, an entry level Coach Manager, TBS or VMS Express system will cost $137.63 per month. As an added benefit, clients who elect to utilize the rental option are automatically enrolled in the Distinctive Systems world class Annual Maintenance Plan. For any questions, or to schedule a demo, please call 646-448-9981 or email at nasales@distinctive-systems.com. Pricing calculators for both a traditional purchase and/or the rental option are now available on the Distinctive Systems website at www.distinctive-systems.com/us/.
Cummins Continued From Page 56 Today's on-highway diesel engines in the United States emit 99 percent less Particulate Matter (PM) and NOx than they did 30 years ago. The Company's use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to meet the EPA's stringent 2010 emissions standards is a building block for the new GHG and fuel-efficiency standards. SCR not only reduces NOx to near- zero levels, but it also enables reduced fuel consumption. As a result, the Cummins 2010 Heavy-Duty and MidRange engines deliver up to 6 percent improved fuel efficiency compared with the previous models. Electric power steering will be added when the manufacturer makes it available. “MDT had confidence that the Thermo King system would fit well into MDT operations as they provide good local customer service and after sales support for their products,” said MDT Public Information Officer Karla Damian. “Their products have proven to be reliable and efficient, as well as environmentally friendly, using R-407C refrigerant. “Thermo King worked hand-in-hand with MDT bus manufacturers to ensure successful integration with other bus systems. In addition to savings in fuel costs, there will be savings in maintenance costs of approximately $10,000 per bus per year, across the hybrid fleet. The projected average annual savings for both fuel and maintenance is anticipated to be more than $20,000 per bus.” Florida’s largest public transit agency, MDT has 822 buses in its total fleet, including 25 New Flyer 60-foot diesel/electric
hybrids and 13 NABI 40-foot diesel/electric hybrids with electrified accessories. In March 2011, the addition of five new 40foot Gillig diesel/electric hybrids with electrified accessories brought the hybrid fleet to 43 buses and the total fleet to 822 buses. All buses in the fleet use biodiesel fuel and are programmed for automatic idle shutdown. In 2010, as part of its effort to implement environmentally conscious initiatives, MDT also committed to purchasing only hybrid buses in the future. Over the next five years, the agency plans to electrify other bus components such as power steering, doors, air compressors, wheelchair ramps, etc. “More and more MDT is being recognized for its efforts in reducing its carbon footprint and for being at the forefront of the use of diesel-electric hybrid technology,” Damian said. “Miami-Dade County’s focus is to achieve aggressive climate change, water conservation, energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals to sustain the county’s communities and natural resources. This effort includes the county’s implementation of GreenPrint, which is a framework to synchronize government and community goals and initiatives. “In following the county’s GreenPrint
goals, Miami-Dade Transit is demonstrating its long-term commitment to increasing the county’s sustainability by reducing its bus fleet’s carbon footprint and improving its fuel economy.” For more information about MDT, visit www.miamidade.gov/transit. Proterra Continued From Page 30 are at various levels of vehicle deployment, much in part to strong leadership and financial support. “An additional handful of transit systems have been awarded U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGGER II grants for the purchase of electric buses. We hope to become a partner with them for furthering a pilot program resulting in full-fledged commercial supply. In the summer of 2011, a larger number of public agencies applied for TIGGER II and other federal grant programs in order to expand market deployment around the country. We are also looking to Canada for partners to further our project developments.” Goldman said the market for clean and efficient transportation continues to grow on a monthly basis, especially as fuel prices become more volatile. “We have what we feel is a class-leading product and a very accepting customer base. The form of transportation that we offer is still in its early stages of deployment, but there is no reason we cannot be on equal, if not better, footing to hybrid and natural gas buses over the next few years,” he said. “As a company, we appreciate the early efforts of such agencies as Foothill Transit, Via Metropolitan Transit, StarMetro and others. They were the early champions that got our project off the ground. We are now starting to see other systems looking at electric buses at a viable option.” He added that Proterra has been able to help customers receive well-funded government grants to help pilot the company’s EcoRide™ and charging system program. “Providing a pure zero emissions bus makes it much easier to quantify GHG (greenhouse gas) impact compared to mobile source carbon-based fuels,” Goldman said. “We also work with a customer’s utility source to help with the purchase or installation of renewable sources of electricity (such as wind and solar). This allows for a near zero well-to-wheel GHG impact for moving public passengers. “I will be the first to admit there is no such thing as a zero emissions vehicle. For example, such parts as tires, plastics and rubber hoses all give off some emissions. It’s part of that new car smell we all like. But, it terms of real emissions compared to any other technology except fuel cell, electric vehicles are the most emissions-free that can be purchased. About the only thing that tends to beat us in the per-passenger fuel economy race is the bicycle.” Manufacturing In South Carolina
S
ince the company’s beginning in 2004, Proterra has assembled a strong management and engineering team experienced
in heavy-duty vehicles; state-of-the-art manufacturing; and advanced energy storage, charging and drive systems. The company announced in 2010 its plan to build a full-scale research and development center and manufacturing plant on the campus of Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research (CUICAR), located in Greenville, SC. Moving manufacturing to Greenville provides Proterra with access to tremendous research and development resources for the EcoRide™ BE-35 and the FastFill™ charging stations.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, left, met with Proterra employees earlier this year.
“Our goal is to construct over 1,500 buses per year and grow the company to more than 800 employees over the next five years,” Goldman said. “We have already moved manufacturing from our prototyping facility in Golden, CO, to a 220,000-square-foot assembly plant in Greenville, SC, to meet near term demand. This interim facility, with a three-year lease, is capable of producing more than 200 EcoRide™ buses per year.” Among the early adopter transit agencies helping get Proterra’s technology and buses moving forward has been California's Foothill Transit. The agency has acquired three EcoRide™ BE-35 buses and two FastFill™ chargers with options for nine more buses. According to Goldman, these vehicles allow Foothill Transit to be ahead of the impending CARB zero emissions bus requirement at a fraction of the cost of current trolley bus and fuel cell bus systems. “Foothill Transit has been driving our vehicles in revenue service since September 2010 with remarkable efficiency and reliability, given the product’s pilot nature,” Goldman said. “The good news is that the federal government continues to provide funding for this type of project and the market continues to increase. Most importantly, however, is that Foothill Transit is driving electric buses everyday with passengers on them. “We are also now building buses for VIA Metropolitan Transit and StarMetro. Just as essential, Altoona testing is taking place on one of our buses. The goal is to have this testing completed by the first quarter of 2012.”
What Does The Future Hold?
T
he days of thinking that electric bus technology can only serve niche markets may soon be over. At Proterra, officials see the EcoRide™ BE-35 as a viable mainstream transit option. “Any repeated route on a 2-hour/40-mile cycle can be well served by our product. We are also working on a longer range commuter version for the remaining rush hour routes,” Goldman said. “Thanks to on-route fast charging that fully recharges batteries in less time than a typical driver layover, we are able to provide safe, economical and zero emission buses. We also provide simple infrastructure benefits compared to competitive technologies. “Maybe our niche is zero emissions, but our focus is moving passengers at an economical rate. We think this need is uniform across the world.” Proterra officials look forward to working with current and new customers to further demonstrate the adaptability of its products to a growing user base in a variety of climates and drive cycles. The company also announced in June that a recent investment of $30 million has taken place to accelerate the commercialization of Proterra’s fast-charge transit buses and charging system. The investment is being led by Silicon Valley venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), and also includes GM Ventures; Mitsui & Co., Ltd.; Vision Ridge Partners; and 88 Green Ventures, LLC. This investment enables Proterra to complete critical federal validation testing of its bus, roll out additional pilot fleets and complete initiatives to significantly reduce costs and increase volume production at its Greenville plant. “We produced a handful of buses in 2009 and 2010, but expect our numbers to double this year and expand further in 2012,” Goldman said. “Proterra has an opportunity, within three years, to produce over 400 buses should the market continue to show itself. We will focus on increasing product reliability and efficiency, all the while growing our team and partnerships. “Proterra continues to provide fuel cell buses for various federal research contracts, but our main focus is on the pure battery-powered bus. Battery technology has come along well enough to now be able to provide a true zero emissions bus, one that is both economically viable as well as environmentally sustainable. “This is the ‘rocket-to-the-moon’ moment for our generation as it pertains to sustainable mobility. We at Proterra feel very honored to be a part of this movement, and it’s exciting.” Contact: Proterra, 16360 Table Mountain Parkway, Golden, CO 80403. Phone: 303-562-0500. Van Hool A300L FC - Fuel Cell Van Hool A300L The Van Hool A300L is a 40-foot, true low-floor, heavy-duty transit bus that is compatible for all modes of people moving transportation. From inter-city transit to employee shuttle to airport and ground transportation, the A300L is a viable solution for all applications. Designed to promote quick and easy passenger flow, the Van Hool A300L offers an extremely smooth ride aboard a distinctly modern urban transit bus. A true low-floor interior design from front to rear makes entering and walking through the bus simple and less cumbersome. Its stepless design makes transitioning from the street to the bus easy and convenient, whether using the fold-out ADA-approved ramp or stepping directly from the curb to the inside of the bus. The A300L is available with two- and three-door configurations, which help to distribute passengers throughout the vehicle. The engine is located mid-ship – halfway between the front and rear axles. This provides a smoother, less bouncy ride than other bus designs. Performing engine maintenance is much easier than on the traditional rear engine buses thanks to the multiple service panels located inside, outside, and underneath the bus. The combination of low-floors, high ceilings, expansive windows and improved circulation gives passengers the distinct feeling of openness rather than feeling confined in an enclosed compartment, and offers a substantial improvement in the quality and customer-friendliness of public transport. The Van Hool Company was honored with the Bus World Kortrijk 2009 Grand Environment Award, citing the company’s A330 Fuel Cell model. The hybrid-diesel electric bus offers a uniquely environmentally-friendly alternative for public transport providers. In the United States the Van Hool A330 Fuel Cell has been well received by the American public where partners ABC, Van Hool, and AC Transit pioneered a “green” transit initiative in 2005. Along with AC Transit, SunLine Transit and Connecticut Transit have this model in current service. This next generation of Van Hool’s fuel cell bus – the Van Hool A300L FC – retains its place as one of the most technically advanced transit buses available today. This clean, low-floor, quiet, energy efficient 40-foot transit emits only water vapor from the tailpipe. Virtually noiseless, yet powerful enough to climb grades in excess of 18 percent and reach speeds of 50 mph, the A300L FC is powered by a zero-emission hydrogenfueled, hybrid-electric engine, utilizing a 120 kW fuel cell system, onboard battery power, and regenerative braking. EcoRide™ BE-35 Proterra’s EcoRide™ 35-foot, low-floor composite body transit bus is built upon a battery-electric vehicle architecture including the key enabling technologies: The proprietary composite body reduces weight approximately 20-40 percent over a conventional steel or aluminum bus, is crash and element resistant, and is designed specifically to accommodate the battery-electric drive technology; The proprietary TerraVolt™ Energy Storage System can be charged in under 10 minutes. The cells are packaged in proprietary 23 volt modules along with a proprietary battery management system (8 modules per box) in a package that fits neatly within the composite floor structure. This helps maintain a lower center of gravity and even weight distribution; The ProDrive system is powered by a single UQM PowerPhase® 150 permanent magnet (PM) motor with custom engineering for Proterra. It’s rated at 150 kW peak (100 kW continuous) power and generates 650 Nm of torque. The drive motor is coupled to a newly designed Borg Warner three-speed eGearDrive™ transmission, designed to meet requirements of Proterra’s heavy-duty transit applications. The transmission allows the traction motor to operate within the 92 to 95 percent efficiency range for both driven and regenerative braking modes. While the EcoRide™ BE-35 is a pure battery electric bus, its design allows for the addition of auxiliary power units (APU) for recharging the energy storage system where vehicle routes or lack of electrical infrastructure does not make charging stations possible.

MVTA Board Awards Contract For Intelligent Transportation Systems Base Architecture To RouteMatch The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) Board of Directors awarded a contract for Intelligent Transportation Systems Base Architecture (also known as an automatic vehicle locator – AVL – system). “This is an exciting move for the MVTA,” said Board Chair Willis E. Branning, who was a member of the Board’s “Special AVL Committee.” He continued, “During the past two years, we carefully researched systems that would best meet the needs of the MVTA and we believe RouteMatch will be an excellent long-term technology partner with the MVTA.” The committee reviewed the regional system in place at Metro Transit and other area providers, and then directed staff to seek other options. The committee wanted to ensure that the solution will not only meet current needs, but will take advantage of future technologies without a complete system replacement. The objective of the AVL project is to “improve the operational efficiency and performance of the MVTA,” according to Executive Director Beverley Miller. “These desires can be summarized in two main goals:
1) Improve overall dispatching and operating efficiency, and 2) Increase availability of transit information and dissemination.” RouteMatch Software, which currently works with more than 350 transit agencies nationwide, will be providing MVTA with integrated, yet modular transportation software, accompanying hardware, and traveler information services. RouteMatch’s CAD/AVL solution will serve as the base of MVTA’s system which will help MVTA more effectively manage its fixed routes and on time performance, and locate its vehicles. The contract also includes the purchase of the Android-based Samsung Galaxy tablets for 120 vehicles. These devices will help MVTA bus drivers conduct in-vehicle navigation, real-time data collection and route/schedule adherence. “MVTA is a terrific example of a progressive transit agency that values open, scalable solutions to accommodate a large commuter ridership between metro and suburban communities,” said Tim Quinn, executive vice president and co-founder of RouteMatch Software. “We’re thrilled that Minnesota Valley has cho-
sen RouteMatch’s technology and our team of engineers, implementation consultants and customer support specialists. We look forward to partnering with MVTA to achieve its immediate and long-term goals.” The MVTA will take a phased approach to the project and requires a scalable system with a well-defined upgrade path to technologies that support Automated Passenger Counting, Automate Voice Annunciation, On Board Dynamic Message Signs, and additional Traveler Information Systems (TIS). The ability to share information with the regional system is also an important component of the project. The project is being funded by a variety of sources including the MVTA’s 2010 National Transit Database (NTD) fund allocation that has been exchanged into Regional Transit Capital (RTC) bond funds, and RTC funds from MVTA’s 2011 NTD allocation. Additional components will be added to the system as funding is obtained. MVTA is the public transportation provider for residents and businesses of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, and Savage. Visit www.mvta.com for more information.

Three Global Companies To Invest $150 Million In Clean Energy Holdings Pte. Ltd., Lionfish Investments Pte Ltd, an investment vehicle managed by Seatown Holdings International Pte. Ltd, both based in Singapore, and Greenwich Asset Holding Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of RRJ Capital Master Fund I, L.P. "This investment by Temasek, Seatown and RRJ demonstrates their confidence in the opportunity for fueling natural gas vehicles as well as in Clean Energy's position as the leader in growing this market," said Andrew J. Littlefair, President and CEO of Clean Energy. "Our development program for fueling station-building is expanding rapidly and we welcome the support provided by the funds." "We are steadily adding stations serving fleets in the refuse, transit, airport, municipal and regional trucking markets around the country as well as through our recently announced build-out of the backbone of America's Natural Gas Highway for trucking," added Littlefair. The $150-million investment is in the form of 7.50 percent convertible notes due in 2016. The notes will be convertible into shares of Clean Energy common stock at $15.00 per share. The closing of the investment is scheduled to occur on or before August 30, 2011 and is subject to customary conditions. The use of proceeds is intended to support Clean Energy's fueling infrastructure building program broadly, including the development, construction and operation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations and the related support, management, maintenance and marketing of those stations, including the development, construction and operation of offloading facilities, related production assets and delivery trucks. "We are honored to be a strategic partner of Clean Energy," said Richard Ong, Chairman/CEO of RRJ Capital. "We like the long-term prospects of the company. Clean Energy has been demonstrating a strong track record in natural gas fueling services in North America. It is well-positioned to tap into the future growth opportunities in both the domestic market and in international markets such as China and Southeast Asia." Commenting on the announcement, Aubrey K. McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy Corporation, which recently invested $150 million in Clean Energy to support the natural gas highway program, said, "We are pleased to have introduced Clean Energy to our friends at Temasek, Seatown and RRJ, and we see this commitment by these major global investors www.budgettruckandauto.com as being very beneficial to increasing the demand for natural gas in North America and also to keeping Clean Energy in the lead for providing natural gas vehicle fueling and deployment solutions in North America." According to the company, currently priced $1.50-$2.00 per gallon lower than diesel or gasoline (depending upon local markets), the use of natural gas fuel can reduce costs for vehicle and fleet owners, reduces greenhouse gas emissions up to 30 percent in light-duty vehicles and 23 percent in medium to heavy-duty vehicles. Additionally, natural gas is a secure North American energy source with 98 percent of the natural gas consumed produced in the U.S. and Canada.
Three investment companies have agreed to invest $150 million in Clean Energy Fuels Corp., a leading North America provider of natural gas fuel for transportation. The investors are Springleaf Investments Pte. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek

A Candies Coachworks Adds An Eighth Prevost H3-45 A Candies Coachworks, Inc. of Gainesville, FL, took possession of a new Prevost 2011 H3-45 motorcoach in July. The new addition, which joins seven other H3-45s in the A Candies fleet, will be used primarily for charters. The new coach is equipped with three point seat belts, fire suppression system and tire pressure monitoring system, in addition to all of the other standard H3-45 model features. Much of A Candies Coachworks’ business involves transporting sports fans and school athletes, especially the University of Florida “Gators”, throughout the southeast United States and beyond. The family-owned company, which employs 18, has seen demand for its services grow steadily since its founding 25 years ago. In fact, president and CEO Sander Kaplan recalls that A Candies needed to buy its second coach only three months after purchasing its first. A Candies bought its first Prevost in 2006, Kaplan said. As for the new H3-45, it has already elicited client comments. “People say ‘Wow, what a nice bus,’” he noted. “The safety features on the 2011 were also huge for us,” Kaplan added. “Safety is our number one priority and our clients like knowing they’re on a coach equipped with the latest technology.” A Candies also likes the H3-45’s “greenness,” which fits with the company’s eco-friendly approach. The company was named 2006 “Business of the Year” by the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce, and 2008 Best Transportation Company by LCT magazine.
