Message From The Dean

Dear Alumni, Friends, and Colleagues, Welcome 2020! A new decade to learn, teach, and discover on the frontline of medicine at Boston University.

We have much to share with you in this issue of BU Medicine. First and foremost, we received a full, eight-year accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. We received no citations, but we must monitor our learning environment, as well as continue to address student debt and student health services.

Many thanks to all who participated in this four-year process, particularly Dr. Debbie Vaughan, who directed the process; Dr. Tom Moore, who chaired the faculty self-study; co-chairs of the Independent Student Analysis Kathryn Ivy, MD (MED’19 and now an internal medicine resident at Vanderbilt), Aditya Mithal, MD-PhD candidate (MED’23), and Nikita Saxena, MD (MED’18 and now a pediatric resident at BMC/Boston Children’s); and the 220 faculty, staff, and students who prepped and met with the site visitors.

Thanks to you and our many other generous donors, the decade-long Campaign to Transform Boston University School of Medicine reached a successful conclusion and raised $353 million in support, improving our campus facilities, doubling our endowed scholarship aid, advancing cutting-edge research, and supporting faculty development.

Foundations played an integral role, committing nearly $200 million to the school over the course of the campaign—critical support for faculty who are demonstrating proof of concept or piloting new interventions. Our cover story, which begins on page 10, illustrates some of our campaign highlights.

Let’s not lose this momentum! The campaign addressed medical school affordability and student debt, raising

$34 million in scholarship support and establishing 43 new endowed scholarship funds. Yet we know that debt remains a real concern for our students. Please join me in continuing to support our scholarship aid, our highest fundraising priority.

Also in this issue of BU Medicine, we share some faculty achievements: • Deborah Stearns-Kurosawa, PhD, is our new Associate Provost/Dean ad interim for Graduate Medical Sciences.

• Christopher D. Andry, MPhil, PhD, has been named Chair, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.

• Ann McKee, MD, was named a 2019 Service to America Medalist and received the Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Medal from the Partnership for Public Service.

• Joshua Barocas, MD, received the Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship, a national, annual award by the Association of American Medical Colleges for a junior faculty member demonstrating leadership in addressing disparities in medical education and healthcare.

• Megan Young, MD, received a 2019 Women Physicians Section Inspiration Award from the American Medical Association.

In addition, we celebrate Reshma Kewalramani (CAS’98, MED’98), who becomes president and CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. in April, the first woman to head a major US biomedical company.

Students and alumni from our Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP) enjoyed a memorable homecoming weekend.

Our current students enthusiastically interacted with EMSSP alumni, who are committed to creating a supportive network for them.

But most importantly, this issue is about you—our alumni, faculty, staff, friends, foundations, and corporations. We appreciate all of your contributions, highlighted in our donor report, that demonstrate your commitment to our future and our ongoing mission to improve health and healthcare.

Sarkis J. Kechejian (MED’63) was born and raised in Queens, New York. His parents were immigrants and survivors of the Armenian genocide who worked hard, were involved with their church community, and were happy with their new life in America.

“I have memories of cracking and preparing walnuts for 100 trays of my mother’s baklava donations to the church,” recalls Dr. Kechejian. His parents’ hard work and dedication to others would be instilled in his way of doing things, and ultimately, his inspiration for giving.

After attending NYU, Dr. Kechejian made his way to Boston University for medical school. He worked summer jobs, received financial aid, and ended up graduating with only $10,000 in debt.

In the ‘90s, Dr. Aram Chobanian invited him to be a member of the School of Medicine Board of Visitors to provide guidance and support for students and the school.

“I couldn’t believe how much tuition costs had risen. Dedicated students shouldn’t be burdened with a mountain of debt.”

By the 2000s, Dr. Kechejian made two generous $1 million donations. Recognizing the significant need for student financial assistance, he established the Kechejian Family Scholarship Fund—the first of its kind for BUSM students.

“We all stand on the shoulders of others—we didn’t get here alone. I have always been very grateful for the excellent education I received at the medical school. It truly is one of the many shoulders I still stand on today. I hope my scholarships, in turn, will inspire students to do the same when they are able,” he said. Students who receive funds from Dr. Kechejian are encouraged to write to him about themselves so he can learn more about their background and journey to becoming a doctor.

Today, Dr. Kechejian is a cardiologist, president of K Clinics, located in North Texas, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Alliance Health, Inc., and president of the Kechejian Foundation.

At 81 years young, Dr. Kechejian has a few words of advice for his peers who may be on the fence about donating: “Don’t give until it hurts . . . give until it feels good. Also remember, the last suit we wear doesn’t need any pockets.”

n August 2, students eager to start their medical education lined the walkway under the Talbot Building arches leading to the massive white tent on the green. Hundreds of family members and friends held cameras and phones high above their heads to capture images of their loved ones, who were proudly displaying short white coats draped over their right arms.

A symbolic rite of passage, the White Coat Ceremony marks a vital first step for medical students as they pledge their commitment to their profession and to the trust they must earn from their patients.

Associate Dean for Student Affairs Angela H. Jackson, MD, welcomed the students and their guests.

“You have met academic and personal challenges, had successes and failures, sacrificed much, and accomplished a great deal to reach this moment,” said Kristen Goodell, MD, associate dean for admissions. “As you move into the next phase of your journey, each of you will struggle, each of you will have doubts, and at some point, each of you will look in the mirror and wonder, can I really do this?

“What will sustain you in these difficult moments will be your own skill and talent, your own resilience and strength of character, the support of your classmates, your family and friends, and the commitment of your teachers and mentors,” she continued. “For us as a faculty, it will be a privilege to walk part of the way with you and perhaps to guide you, just a little bit. . . . Dean Antman, it is my honor and my privilege to present to you, the Boston University School of Medicine entering Class of 2019.”

Drawn from a pool of more than 9,000 candidates through five entry pathways and 65 undergraduate institutions, the class is 46 percent women and 14 percent from underrepresented groups in medicine.

Special in many ways, the class includes members from 28 US states. More than 88 percent are at least bilingual and, as a group, speak 25 different languages.

At times, the ceremony was lighthearted. The assembled crowd laughed appreciatively when BUMC Provost and BUSM Dean Karen H. Antman, MD, cautioned parents, “Don’t be

surprised if your student finds their life partner among their classmates. It’s very common, perhaps because they won’t see anyone else for four years.”

Guest speaker Thea James, MD, associate professor of emergency medicine, BMC associate chief medical officer and vice president of mission, and director of the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program,

spoke of carefully choosing her remarks to positively impact the students over the next four years and beyond.

“My decision to become a physician was the best decision I have made in my life.

Imagine a job where people arrive all day, every day with a range of emotions—sadness, excitement, anxiousness, depression, even anger,” she told them. “As a physician, you

get to be the one who can shift or change that person’s perspective. And you see it happen right in front of you. It happens when you engage with patients and their families, no assumption, just listening, learning, and acknowledging that you hear them. You hear what they’re saying and how they’re feeling.

“In a while, you’re going to realize that being a physician is a privilege. We have to be mindful of our professional privilege, our individual privilege, and the intersections associated with that. We have to remember people trust us and come to us for help when they are in their most vulnerable state. We have to be self-aware and mindful of not causing further emotional and lasting harm.”

Dr. James concluded by addressing a paradigm shift in how healthcare is impacting vulnerable populations. “The good news is that you happen to be members of a medical campus characterized by a culture of deep commitment, creativity, thought leadership, visionaries, advocacy, and mission-oriented people. This includes a very active and robust research culture,” she said.

“We have the foundation to address equity and the social determinants of health. You don’t have to be concerned about whether you will be able to do something about the root causes of your patient’s instability. You don’t have to be afraid to inquire—to ask the questions—for fear of not being able to do anything about it.”

We Will Jump In: 2019 PA Graduates Make Leap to Clinical World “Today we celebrate the accomplishments of 28 highly successful individuals who comprise the Class of 2019,” said Program Director Susan White, MD, as she opened the fourth Commencement exercises for the Physician Assistant (PA) Program, held August 15 at the Albany Street auditorium.

The newly conferred graduates now join the 131,000 practicing physician assistants across the United States. The graduation ceremony marks the end of a two-anda-half-year journey through an intensive course of study, including an integrated pathophysiology and pharmacology course alongside second-year medical students. In addition to classroom work, students also complete 14 months of clinical rotations and a thesis project.

“I hope you will choose to lead, and you see leadership as a frame of mind, not simply as a title or a position,” said David Coleman, MD, Wade Professor and chair of medicine at BUSM. “Remember the three Ms: Find meaning in your work. Constantly pursue a sense of mastery. Embrace and enjoy this remarkable profession, and always feel like a member of the BUSM community.”

Joseph Gibson, PA-S III, president of the Carl Toney Society, welcomed this year’s Commencement speaker, Howard Straker, PhD, PA-C. Dr. Straker currently serves as president-elect of the Physician Assistant Education Association and will take over as president in 2020. He is an assistant professor of physician assistant studies at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and at the School of Public Health, and director of the joint degree PA/MPH program.

“You’re coming out of your shell today.

You’re entering at a time where you can shape the future. Your voice can influence a team, your voice can make a difference, and your voice belongs at the table. This is leadership, and leadership is influence,” Dr. Straker told the graduates.

He encouraged them to use their new voices in a call-and-response to various scenarios in the physician assistant field as they answered with, “We will jump in.”

PA Class of 2021 Celebrates White Coat Ceremony

T

he Physician Assistant Class of 2021 celebrated the start of their journey into clinical care through the Boston University School of Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) Program at the annual White Coat Ceremony on July 19, 2019.

Surrounded by family, friends, and faculty, 31 students became the sixth PA student class to don their white coats at BUSM, which they received as a symbol of their progression to the clinical phase of their education after learning how to complete a history and physical exam in their first semester.

Program director Susan White, MD, greeted the class. Carl Toney, PA, who served as the inaugural class white coat speaker and is the namesake of the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants at BUSM, delivered the keynote address. A 1979 graduate of the Duke University PA program who has had a long career in primary care, public health, and public policy, Mr. Toney’s commitment to helping underserved populations is underscored by the positions he has held, including at the Georgia State Office of Rural Health and as director of the HIV-AIDS and STD programs for the Maine Bureau of Health.

“The coat is very magical—it is a symbol,” Mr. Toney told the graduates. “It is what you will wear on your trip down your individual ‘yellow brick road’ for the next few decades, and the adventures that you

will have—the patients you see, the staff that you will get to know, and the knowledge that you will accumulate.

“The coat carries a lot of responsibility with it. You stand as a beacon; a guide of hope. Connect yourself with the white coat and the humanity that it represents, so that every patient that you come in contact with knows, without a doubt, that you are willing to care for them and about them,” he concluded.

Students were then called up individually and cloaked in their new white coats by members of the Class of 2020. Emily Louis, PA-SII and president of the Carl Toney Society, led them in reciting the Physician Assistant Professional Oath, after which they celebrated at a reception with families and friends. n

BU’s BEST: Building Tomorrow’s Biomedical Workforce Today

A

2012 advisory committee report to the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that 23 percent of the biomedical workforce was in tenured or tenure-track positions, leaving the other nearly 80 percent in “other” positions. The committee recommended the NIH invest in different methods of improving training opportunities for predoctoral students and 6

postdoctoral scholars to prepare them for the changing biomedical workforce, leading to the formation of the Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) program and the solicitation for applications.

BEST aims to develop programming to enhance career opportunities. BU’s program is based on the principle of taking an evidence-based approach to determining workforce needs and mapping those needs/skills

onto the curriculum, thereby supplying the workforce with trained scientists. Funded institutions were mandated to develop means of sustaining the programming.

BU’s five-year, $1.8 million award in 2014 paved the way for the University to build an evolving curriculum that is responsive to workforce needs. As one of only 17 BEST schools the NIH chose, BU can enhance biomedical career development curricula in a way that explores careers both inside and outside academic research. The consortium has helped fuel a nationwide trend to broaden the training of

scientists, enabling them to pursue fulfilling careers in a range of sectors.

Open to all biomedical doctoral students and postdocs, the program exposes trainees to a variety of career paths, including those they may not have considered. Career exploration workshops span seven career tracks, including academic research, business and administration, communication, industry research, law and regulatory affairs, policy, and teaching.

BU’s BEST engages collaborators across the University and the Boston area to strengthen a shared vision for biomedical career development and implement innovative programming grounded in real-world settings. Throughout the academic year, a plethora of programs fill the activity calendar for participating trainees, including lunch & learns, career panels, career coaching, site visits, speed networking, skill-building workshops, and other related topics. To date, more than 700 trainees have attended 170-plus workshops and more than 100 companies have met with students and postdocs, on- and offsite, including 23andMe, Boston Scientific, Cell Press, Navigant, Pfizer, Sanofi, and Vertex.

Students Place First, Third at 2019 GSSA Northeast Hackathon

S

econd-year students Prahan Chetlur, Quinten Dicken, and Shamsh Shaikh took the top spot at the 2019 Global Surgery Student Alliance (GSSA) 2019 Northeast Hackathon, held at Tufts University in September.

The annual weekend-long competition tackled the imminent challenges in delivery, access, and infrastructure pertaining to global surgery issues through interdisciplinary teams. Medical students from around the Northeast were invited; nine teams participated. Hackathons join professionals— including patients, nurses, doctors, engineers, developers, designers, businesspeople, and insurance and policy experts—spanning the

Molecular & Translational Medicine PhD candidate Jesse Floro finds the program extremely valuable: “BU’s BEST has been instrumental in me taking responsibility to get my career off of the ground. Previously, I had been so focused on my PhD work, but the BEST program gave me different opportunities in multiple career fields to start networking, connecting with people on LinkedIn, and exploring different career opportunities. It has really broadened my horizons in terms of what’s available to me once I finish my PhD.” Professors have seen the program’s potential, too. Kim McCall, PhD, a BU’s BEST board and steering committee member, CRC professor, and chair of biology, said, “I’ve been at BU for 20 years, and been a straight academic my whole life. I realized that my grad students were often interested in other

careers, and I didn’t know how to prepare them. I saw that BEST was an opportunity to make a better, stronger program and open up all of these career choices, and it seemed like a great solution.”

“We are grateful to our partners who have helped us serve our trainees. BU’s BEST has grown in the past five years with exciting initiatives and spinoffs, and we are so proud of where the program has taken our participating PhD trainees and postdoctoral scholars,” says Amanda Bolgioni-Smith, PhD, director for professional and career development and the program’s director.

Schreiber, PhD, adds, “Although the grant was a five-year nonrefundable award, with institutional funds and a generous donation from alumna Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle and her husband, Colin, we are excited about continuing this important effort, as the program has had a clear impact on career outcomes and preparation for our trainees at Boston University.”

Appointments, Honors & Awards Deborah StearnsKurosawa Appointed GMS Associate Provost Ad Interim Deborah StearnsKurosawa, PhD, associate professor of pathology & laboratory medicine, has been appointed associate provost/dean ad interim for Graduate Medical Sciences (GMS).

Dr. Stearns-Kurosawa joins the School of Medicine and Medical Campus senior leadership teams. She will oversee curricula and execution of all graduate programs, including recruitment, admissions, ongoing program activities, new program development, and student outcomes. In addition, she will continue to foster the collaboration of the basic science and clinical departments in education and graduate research.

Dr. Stearns-Kurosawa, who joined BU in 2008 as assistant professor of pathology & laboratory medicine, previously had served as an assistant member at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and as chief research scientist at a pharmaceutical corporation in Tokyo. She earned a BS in biochemistry from Pennsylvania State University, a PhD in chemistry from Cleveland State University with graduate research at the Cleveland Clinic, and completed postdoctoral training in a Howard Hughes Medical Institute laboratory at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation focused on mechanisms of blood coagulation. She holds multiple patents and for two decades has continuously served as principal or co-investigator of numerous NIH and organizational grants.

She was a core faculty member of the BU Faculty Innovation Network that supported development of the $20M Innovate@BU initiative. The University-wide pioneering entrepreneurship resource for BU faculty, students, and alumni is designed to educate and provide resources to facilitate entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial innovation, technology transfer, and product development.

Andry, MPhil, PhD, has been named chief of pathology & laboratory medicine at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and chair of pathology & laboratory medicine at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM).

Dr. Andry’s BU/BMC career has spanned more than 35 years, during which he has demonstrated a deep-rooted commitment to and passion for the mission of the BMC Health System, BUSM and the Medical Campus, Boston University, and the Boston community at large. As chief and chair, Dr. Andry will bring his clinical expertise and leadership to the role to ensure a high-quality, integrated, academic department that is innovative, well-resourced, and collaborative.

Previously, he served as the department’s vice chair for operations & management and administrative director. A professor of pathology & laboratory medicine and family medicine, he also is a member of the BU-BMC Cancer Center Executive Committee, cochair of the BU Laboratory Safety Committee, and liaison to New England Donor Services.

Dr. Andry received his PhD in pathology from BUSM and his Bachelor of Science and Master of Philosophy in biological sciences from the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom.

He has published and collaborated on more than 50 articles, reviews, and medical texts. n

Megan Young Receives AMA Inspiration Award Megan Young, MD, assistant dean for student affairs and assistant professor of medicine in the section of geriatrics, has received a 2019 Women Physicians Section Inspiration Award from the American Medical Association (AMA). The award honors and acknowledges physicians who have offered their time, wisdom, and support throughout the professional careers of fellow physicians, residents, and students.

Dr. Young is director for the geriatrics clerkship and one of the Academy of Medical Educators at BUSM. Clinically, she provides home-based primary care to frail elders in the community surrounding Boston Medical Center (BMC).

According to fourth-year medical student Jacqueline You, who nominated her for the award, “Dr. Young goes above and beyond her role as assistant dean within Student Affairs.

She always is available to listen or give advice.

She is a strong advocate and will reach out to others without hesitation to find answers for students. She is extensively involved throughout our medical school curriculum, serving as course director in both our first-year/secondyear clinical reasoning courses and in our fourth-year geriatrics clerkship. Many students have been inspired by her infectious enthusiasm and thoughtful approach to teaching and clinical care. She is a one-of-a-kind teacher, mentor, and physician.”

Dr. Young received her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed a primary care residency in internal medicine at BMC, where she served as chief medical resident.

She also completed a clinician-educator fellowship in geriatrics at BUSM. Founded in 1847 and incorporated in 1897, the AMA is the largest association of physicians—both MDs and DOs—and medical students in the United States.

Joshua Barocas Receives AAMC’s Nickens Fellowship to Advance Health Equity Joshua Barocas, MD, assistant professor of medicine, has been honored with the Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship, an annual award presented by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to a junior faculty member who has demonstrated leadership in the United States in addressing inequities in medical education and healthcare, demonstrated efforts in addressing the educational, societal, and healthcare needs of minorities, and is committed to a career in academic medicine.

An infectious diseases specialist at Boston Medical Center, Dr. Barocas was selected from a nationwide pool of applicants and recognized at the AAMC’s Learn Serve Lead meeting last November.

Established in 2000, the fellowship includes a financial grant of $25,000 to conduct a project supporting underserved minorities. Toward this, Dr. Barocas will investigate the downstream consequences of opioid overdose interventions. “Treatment and prevention efforts are often designed to focus on communities with the highest current rates of overdoses,” he observes. “Yet the illicit drug market can adapt to these interventions and often moves to communities just beyond the periphery of targeted populations.”

Dr. Barocas hypothesizes that some large-scale interventions to combat the opioid overdose epidemic in one community may directly result in the emergence of the epidemic in another. To study this theory, he will examine data from Massachusetts to estimate changes in opioid overdose and healthcare utilization for opioid use disorder in communities adjacent to those that received expanded treatment and prevention services.

We are proud that he is being recognized by the AAMC for this prestigious national award,” said BUSM’s David Coleman, MD, John Wade Professor and chair of medicine. n Ann McKee Receives Service to America Medal Ann McKee, MD, chief of neuropathology for VA Boston Healthcare System and director of the BU CTE Center, has been named a 2019 Service to America Medalist and received the Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Medal from the Partnership for Public Service.

Named after the Partnership for Public Service’s late founder, who was inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s call to serve in 1963, the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals recognize dedicated civil servants who have made important contributions to the health, safety, and prosperity of our country. Since its inception in 2002, the program has honored more than 500 outstanding federal employees who have made a difference and improved the lives of Americans and others around the world.

Dr. McKee, a William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor of neurology and pathology at BU, was one of six award winners chosen from more than 300 nominations submitted to the partnership. The medalists were chosen by a selection committee that included leaders from government, business, foundations, academia, entertainment, and the media.

This year, the partnership renamed its Career Achievement Medal to honor Paul Volcker, a public servant who completed two terms as Federal Reserve chairman and headed two nonpartisan commissions on public service that recommended sweeping federal government reforms.

Dr. McKee’s research focuses on the longterm effects of concussion, subconcussion, and blast injury in contact sports athletes and military veterans, including chronic traumatic

encephalopathy (CTE). Her work has shifted the prevailing paradigm of scientific thought regarding head trauma; she has demonstrated that “mild” head trauma, particularly repetitive mild head trauma, is not just an acute injury and can provoke a persistent and progressive neurodegeneration, CTE, that continues long after the traumatic exposure.

Dr. McKee has published more than 80 percent of the world’s reported cases of CTE and created the Veterans Affairs-Boston University-Concussion Legacy Foundation brain bank, the world’s largest repository of brains from individuals exposed to traumatic brain injuries (more than 780) and neuropathologically confirmed CTE (more than 400).

A board-certified neurologist and neuropathologist who has provided expert testimony to Congress and the Senate, Dr. McKee has also received the Moore Award from the American Association of Neuropathologists; the Ethos Award from Santa Clara University; the Spivack Distinguished Scholar in the Neurosciences from BUSM; the Vision Award from the Associated Industries of Massachusetts; the Neurology Faculty Research Award, also from BUSM; and the Scientific Impact Award from the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine and named 2017 Bostonian of the Year by the Boston Globe and to the 2017 TIME 100, TIME magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Dr. McKee completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin and received her medical degree from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in neurology at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and in neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The basic elements of the school’s DNA: to become the best place to learn, teach, and discover.

The Campaign for Boston University— which launched publicly in 2012 and concluded with a spectacular victory celebration at Agganis Arena on September 21, 2019—brought that goal closer than ever.

With more than 175,000 donors, BU’s firstever comprehensive fundraising effort realized an astonishing $1.85 billion to support financial aid, faculty and research, facility improvements, and much more.

The School of Medicine raised a total of $353 million, far exceeding the initial goal of $200 million. Every donation, small or large, was critical to that success. Here are some of the remarkable gifts that will help ensure the future of the school’s position on the frontline of medicine.

SUPPORTING STUDENTS The future of the school, BUSM students are the change agents of tomorrow. They are training to become leaders—skilled and caring physicians and scientists at the frontline of innovation. “We want the very best students, from all socioeconomic backgrounds, to be able to choose BUSM,” says Dean Antman. “And we want them to embark on their careers without an overwhelming debt burden.”

Of course, medical school is expensive and BUSM tuition continues to rise, albeit at a slower rate than at comparable institutions. Today, annual tuition is nearly $61,000, and students graduate with an average of $221,464 in medical school debt, which is particularly burdensome for those who choose careers in primary care or pediatrics rather than more lucrative specialties.

With a scholarship endowment of just $36 million at the start of the campaign, raising endowed scholarships to alleviate that burden was our top priority. Thanks to generous alumni, parents, and friends, BUSM now has $63 million in endowed scholarships, a total that generates about $2.5M per year.

A small sampling of the largesse demonstrated by so many: In 2019, original BU International Advisory Board member B. R. Shetty established the Shetty Family Medical Scholarship with a $5 million gift to support graduates who accept residencies in pediatrics or family medicine. The gift, he says, expresses his gratitude to BU, where three of his children earned degrees. “I think it’s only fair that having benefited so much from this world-class university, we do our bit in giving back,” he says.

Endowed in 2013 with $2.5 million from the family foundation of Trustee Stephen Karp (CAS’63), the Karp Family Scholarships support graduates who specialize in pediatrics, and eliminated nearly $150,000 of debt for the seven 2019 recipients.

foundly reduced my financial burden and reinforced my commitment to caring for vulnerable, underserved children with chronic illnesses, and supporting their families,” she says. “Indeed, it will allow me to remain dedicated to this patient population over the course of my career. I am deeply grateful.”

Also in 2019, BU Trustee Alan Leventhal (Hon.’09) and Sherry Leventhal endowed the Leventhal Family Scholarship with a $1 million gift after witnessing the “extraordinary experience” their two daughters had as BUSM students. “Relating to patients in a personalized manner and communication skills are emphasized at BUSM, helping to develop the students into the compassionate physicians that we need more of in this day and age,” says Sherry Leventhal, a Dean’s Advisory Board member and former BUSM campaign chair. “I am particularly impressed by the diversity of the student population and desire of the students to help the underserved everywhere in the world.”

IMPROVING AND BUILDING FACILITIES At BUSM, infrastructure decisions spring from educational and quality-of-life priorities that include affordable housing for students, technology in classrooms to enhance learning, and spaces conducive to concentrated study and intellectual and social collaboration. Facility improvements contribute to student success and attract and retain the most talented faculty.

Campaign gifts for new buildings and renovations totaling $10.5 million underscore that commitment.

The nine-story Medical Student Residence (MSR), BUSM’s first on-campus student housing, provides furnished apartments, a gym, a student lounge, bicycle storage, outdoor recreation space, vegetable gardens, and more for 208 medical students. Rents—which include utilities—are significantly below market rate, thanks to contributions totaling more than $11 million from members of the Dean’s Advisory Board; BU Trustee Shamim Dahod (CGS’76, CAS’78, MED’87) and her husband, Ashraf; a matching grant from the Leventhal Challenge, established by Alan and Sherry Leventhal; and hundreds of alumni contributions.

Safe, modern, and convenient, the MSR has become a vibrant hub of student life.

“Living at the MSR makes it extremely easy to attend classes, mandatory school activities, clubs, and optional functions, since we are less than a fiveminute walk away,” says Chandler Annesi (Sargent’19, MED’23). “You can go to the library when you need a change of scenery for studying, or go home after class for a break. And the gym in the building helps me stay healthy, which I think has helped me succeed so far.”

Indeed, contributions to the campaign have financed renovations and technological advances across the Medical Campus, including the cuttingedge Godley Digital Media Studio and the repurposing of the 13th floor of the Alumni Medical Library into an 11,000-square-foot, multifaceted study and relaxation space, launched with a gift of $1.7 million from the Miselis family.

Filled with light and featuring ceilings, walls, and floors with sound-mitigating properties, the study and relaxation space has something for everyone: individual carrels with expansive desk areas, study pods, group study rooms, tall, granite standing desks, and even enclosed soft seats with adjustable tables and footrests (perfect for a nap).

“Whatever you need study-wise, you’ll most likely find it on the 13th floor,” observes Magdalena Buczek (MED’17,’22). “I still remember the palpable excitement when we all walked in to see the finished renovations. We couldn’t believe our eyes! I feel a great comfort knowing that there is a quiet, beautiful space in the library at school where I know I can be productive. This new space also builds community; we spend hours studying alongside one another, each with a goal we are working toward. For these gifts, I am deeply grateful to the Miselis family.”

ADVANCING RESEARCH Along with BMC, its primary teaching affiliate, BUSM is a recognized research powerhouse. Our faculty are at the forefront of developing new treatments; using computational models to explore personalized therapies for cancer patients; learning how to diagnose chronic traumatic encephalopathy in the living; discovering how aging affects us, from the brain and heart to the liver and colon; and following the Framingham Heart Study, the country’s oldest cardiovascular disease cohort analysis for cardiac, stroke, and other disorders.

The $247 million BUSM raised for research during the campaign is a testament to our leadership. Significant contributions came from many sources, including individuals as well as foundations and corporations.

treatment, and prevention of breast cancer have been brought together in this center. The gift also endowed an annual Dahod Assistant Professorship, as well as a Dahod International Scholar and pilot grants at the center.

As a BUSM medical student at Boston City Hospital (now BMC), Shamim Dahod, a breast cancer survivor, saw the plight of underserved patients firsthand. “There was no prevention for them, just emergency or catastrophic care,” she recalls. “They were really sick, and they came, and they got sicker, and that was it. So, when I went through breast cancer, I said, ‘I would like to do something to take care of that population.’”

Over the years, Jack Spivack, a founding member of the BUSM Dean’s Advisory Board who passed away in July of 2018, donated more than $15 million to the school, including a 2013 bequest of more than $7 million to support the Spivack Center for Clinical and Translational Neuroscience, which funds the work of a multidisciplinary group of basic and clinical researchers studying the structures and functions of the brain that make us uniquely human in order to find treatments for neurological disorders, ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to Parkinson’s.

“I am convinced that the center has great potential for coming up with answers to age-old questions,” Mr. Spivack said upon its founding.

“The people involved are enthusiastic, dedicated, talented, and quite professional; there is so much promise of progress here.”

He also established the Jack Spivack Excellence in Neuroscience Awards to support outstanding BUSM faculty conducting neuroscience research, including the Spivack Senior Neuroscientists, the Spivack Emerging Leaders, and the Spivack Junior Scholars.

In 2016, Trustee Richard C. Shipley (Questrom’68,’72) gave BUSM $10.5 million to create a prostate cancer research center and a website offering accurate, impartial information about treatment options to the general public. The gift sprang from personal experience: Mr. Shipley was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 and chose a treatment called focal laser ablation rather than a prostatectomy, a surgical procedure that carries the risk of temporary— and sometimes permanent—sexual dysfunction or incontinence.

“There are options, good options, that men don’t hear about,” he said at the time. “And I want to get that message out.”

The gift, which came through the Shipley Foundation, endows a professorship at any rank (full, associate, or assistant professor) for a faculty member at the forefront of prostate cancer research and also allots $400,000 a year for 15 years to fund research projects, such as developing urine tests to screen high-risk individuals.

SUPPORTING FACULTY BUSM faculty straddle many disciplines. They conduct pioneering basic research that increases our understanding of how diseases develop, and translational and clinical research that improves diagnostics or leads to therapies for conditions from brain trauma to addiction, infectious diseases to cancer.

And they educate the clinicians and scholars who will follow in their footsteps, advancing frontline medicine through active engagement at the bench and the bedside.

The $34.3 million in campaign contributions toward faculty support acknowledged that investment in faculty is a direct investment in education and the understanding of disease—and in developing new approaches and treatments.

Trustee Stephen Karp understands that connection deeply. In 2012, his family foundation gave $2.5 million to create the Karp Family Professorship in Pediatrics.

Named in 2017, the First Karp Family Professor is Catherine Michelson, MD, program director for the Boston Combined Residency Program at BMC. “I feel extraordinarily honored to serve as the Karp Family Professor of Pediatrics,” she says. “I am exceptionally proud of the work we are doing to maintain our reputation as a leading pediatric training program nationally, where innovation in medical education and scholarship is fostered, prioritized, and realized. With the help of this professorship, I have been hard at work with my team, strengthening the residency locally, our reputation nationally, and moving the science of how we train pediatric doctors to meet the needs of our evolving pediatric workforce and population forward.”

The Department of Medicine itself—home to general internal medicine and medicine subspecialty clinicians, researchers, and educators—endowed several professorships that have also been augmented by campaign gifts. Each endowed chair celebrates an outstanding faculty member from one of the department’s clinical specialties, with colleagues, trainees, and friends of the clinical leader also contributing.

Six such chairs were established during the campaign: the John Noble, MD, Professorship in General Internal Medicine; the Joseph A. Vita, MD, Professorship in Cardiovascular Medicine; the Norman G. Levinsky, MD, Professorship in Nephrology; the Franz J. Ingelfinger, MD, Professorship in Gastroenterology; the Louis W. Sullivan, MD, Professorship; and the David C. Seldin, MD, PhD, Professorship in Medicine.

Optimists Live Longer New study by BU, Harvard researchers indicates positive thinking can help us live past age 85

N

ever underestimate the power of positive thinking.

Although research has identified many risk factors that increase the likelihood of diseases and premature death, much less is known about positive psychosocial factors that can promote healthy aging. But a new study based on decades of research indicates that optimism could boost our chances of living 85 years or more by over 50 percent.

Researchers from Boston University’s School of Medicine, the National Center for PTSD at VA Boston Healthcare System, and Harvard University’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health have found that hope really might spring eternal—individuals with greater optimism are more likely to live longer and to achieve “exceptional longevity”—that is, living to age 85 or older. Optimism refers to a general expectation that good things will happen, or believing that the future will be favorable because we can control important outcomes.

The study, published August 26, 2019, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was based on survey data collected from 69,744 women and 1,429 men. Both groups completed survey questions to assess their level of optimism, as well as their overall health and habits, such as diet, smoking, and alcohol use. The women were followed for 10 years, the men for 30 years.

When individuals were compared based on their initial levels of optimism, the researchers found that the most optimistic men and women demonstrated, on average, an 11 percent to 15 percent longer life span, and had 50 percent to 70 percent greater odds of reaching 85 years of age compared

to the least optimistic groups. The results were maintained after accounting for age, demographic factors such as educational attainment, chronic diseases, and depression, and health behaviors, such as alcohol use, exercise, diet, and primary care visits.

“This study has strong public health relevance because it suggests that optimism is one such psychosocial asset that has the potential to extend the human life span.

Interestingly, optimism may be modifiable using relatively simple techniques or therapies,” says the study’s first and corresponding author, Lewina Lee, a MED assistant professor of psychiatry and a clinical research psychologist at the National Center for PTSD at VA Boston.

Despite the good news, it’s still unclear how exactly optimism helps people attain longer life.

“Other research suggests that more optimistic people may be able to regulate emotions and behavior as well as bounce back from stressors and difficulties more effectively,” says study senior coauthor Laura

Kubzansky of Harvard. The researchers also consider that more optimistic people tend to have healthier habits, such as being more likely to engage in more exercise and less likely to smoke, which could extend life span.

“Research on the reason why optimism matters so much remains to be done, but the link between optimism and health is becoming more evident,” says Francine Grodstein of Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, another study senior coauthor.

This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Clinical Science Research and Development Service of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Fonds de Recherche en Santé–Quebec. Why We Need a Contraception Revolution BU microbiologist Deborah Anderson argues that new birth control approaches are needed to combat overpopulation, climate change

eborah Anderson wants a contraception revolution. In an editorial published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Anderson lays out the reasons why she believes it’s time to reignite research for developing new forms of birth control—and why we need better contraceptive options now more than ever before.

Dr. Anderson, BU School of Medicine professor of medicine, is an expert in the use of plant-grown antibodies, called “plantibodies,” to protect against HIV and herpes simplex virus. Now, her lab is developing new antibodies against sperm for contraception. The idea is to develop a topical film—similar to a Listerine strip—that can be applied vaginally as a contraceptive. Her lab at BU recently received a Contraception Research Center grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop new forms of birth control.

According to the United Nations predictions, human population will reach 9 billion by 2050, up from the current 7.7 billion people estimated to share the planet. That’s a lot of people. And the more people there are, the more resources and energy we need to support us all. As Dr. Anderson points out, although some estimates in the past have said that Earth could theoretically support a human population ranging from 1.5 to 100 billion, that’s only possible if the planet’s own health is stable. Once the Earth’s ecosystem health and rapidly declining biodiversity are factored into the equation, the number of humans that our planet

stably can support plummets drastically, ranging between 1.5 to 5 billion.

And right now? “We’re making a mess of things,” says Dr. Anderson.

At our current consumption rates, we will need 1.75 Earths to meet humanity’s needs, according to the Global Footprint Network. That’s unfortunate, because we’ve got exactly 1.00 Earths to work with.

Last year the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body dedicated to climate science, found that we have as little as 12 years until the world reaches 1.5 degrees of warming, which will escalate the life-threatening risks expected to be caused by a hotter climate. Much of the world is already experiencing the effects of climate change, with prolonged heat waves, droughts, and shrinking glaciers. Add in waste from cities, pollution from agriculture and livestock industries, depleting resources from forests and oceans, the mass extinction of species, and it’s no wonder Dr. Anderson believes it’s time to reinvent the ways we prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Out of the 210 million human pregnancies that occur each year worldwide, about 40 percent are unplanned.

“An unplanned pregnancy can ruin young women economically,” explains Dr. Anderson. “We want to develop products

Despite the efforts of a “contraception revolution” during the 20th century, when several effective birth control methods were developed, a large contraception gap remains. As Dr. Anderson points out, a disproportionate number of unplanned pregnancies occur in young women who often lack access to comprehensive sex education and modern contraception methods. Effective, accessible contraception could be the key to reducing population growth and meeting global sustainable development goals, while ensuring

“There were so many great ideas that were tabled more than a decade ago, such as ideas for male contraceptives,” says Dr. Anderson. “This area of research needs to be reignited and needs more funding.”

Over the past decade, the US spent upwards of $240 billion on health-related impacts of climate change, according to a 2017 report from the Universal Ecological Fund, and those costs are expected to increase in the next decade if drastic steps to mitigate the climate crisis—or protect the planet from the increasing burden of a growing human population—are not taken.

“Noncoercive human reproductive rights could be an important step toward rebalancing the planet and preserving its natural treasures for future generations,” Dr. Anderson wrote in her editorial. Similar to the framework laid out by reproductive justice advocates in the late 1990s, she is calling for contraception options, family planning, and sex education to be accessible to women and men around the world.

Given that the global health costs related

to climate change are projected to exceed $1 trillion per year by the end of the century, Dr. Anderson believes costs to support contraception innovation would be quickly offset by saving the cost of care that would otherwise be needed to treat even more people for diseases attributable to pollution and global warming.

“I’m a scientist and I’m an optimist, and I think if we can get more funding in this field we can make a difference. We can innovate to develop contraception approaches that we can’t even think of right now,” she says.

Dr. Anderson, whose research background is in microbiology and reproductive health, is currently working on a new approach, called multipurpose prevention technology (MPT), using plantibodies, or antibodies from plants.

MPT is designed to simultaneously offer dual protection against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

After spending over a decade creating a plantibody-based microbicide that attacks different parts of the HIV virus and neutralizes herpes simplex virus, her lab is now working to incorporate other plantibodies

that act as a powerful spermicide. These plantibodies attack sperm cells, causing them to bind together and become completely inactive in less than 30 seconds.

Working with scientists in a San Diego– based biopharmaceutical company, Mapp Biopharma, Dr. Anderson envisions that her lab’s plantibody-based technology could someday be used in new STI and pregnancy prevention products that would be affordable and available without a prescription.

She is also optimistic about other emerging birth control options, including male hormonal birth control pills and gels. Leadership and funding for research, education, and family planning services will be critical for a full-fledged contraception revolution, she says, and, ultimately, we can only save the planet if we all work together.

“Everyone has to do what they can. I’m using contraception as my tool because that’s what I know, but a lot of people have other special interests and talents to be applied,” says Dr. Anderson. “The contraception revolution is just one piece of the solution.” n

Your Race May Affect Where an Ambulance Takes You

our race—not which hospital is nearest—may influence which emergency room you are transported to by emergency medical services (EMS).

National guidelines require EMS to transport patients to the nearest suitable hospital. But to what extent this occurs and whether this varies based on the race or ethnicity of patients has remained unknown.

Until now, there has been scant research on the destination patterns of EMS-transported patients to hospitals.

Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine have discovered large differences between the emergency department and hospital destinations of black and Hispanic patients transported by EMS in comparison with their white counterparts.

In a first-of-its-kind study, BUSM researchers showed large differences between the EMS-transport destinations of black and Hispanic patients in comparison with their white counterparts. They also found that 40 percent of patients overall, regardless of race, were not taken to the nearest hospital. According to the researchers, these findings, published online in JAMA Network, suggest that the difference in these transportation destinations may be motivated by factors other than proximity or time.

Using national Medicare claims data, the study divided patients based on the zip code they lived in, and compared which emergency departments and hospitals nonHispanic white, black, and Hispanic patients were brought to within the same zip code.

The study also looked at how often black and Hispanic patients were transported to the destinations most frequently used for white patients.

CTE Risk More Than Doubles after Just Three Years of Playing Football BU researchers discover a strong link between time of football play and rising chance of getting the disease

or every year of absorbing the pounding and repeated head collisions that come with playing American tackle

a type of medical center that by legal obligation or mission provides healthcare for individuals regardless of their insurance status—compared with their white counterparts living in the same zip code.

“This is not a causal study, so we really don’t know why we are seeing this pattern,” says study corresponding author Amresh Hanchate, PhD, associate professor of medicine and a health economist at VA Boston Healthcare System. “It could be a benign phenomenon where people are being brought to the place that they’ve asked to go, because that’s where their regular doctor or cardiologist is located.”

EMS currently doesn’t keep track of the details that determine which hospital a patient is brought to. Dr. Hanchate hopes that this study may change that, and that EMS providers may document whether a patient requests to be brought to a specific medical center.

“This study raises interesting questions,” Dr. Hanchate says. “What are the potential issues with patients not being brought to the nearest place? Let’s say they go to the medical center where their doctors, their patient records are—we know that continuity of care is important. But at what point is the extra loss of time it takes to get there worthwhile or not worthwhile? We need more research to understand the role that patient choice, usual source of care, and clinical condition play in guiding EMS

transportation decisions in diverse systems across the United States.”

“I think [our findings are] unlikely to represent racism or intrinsic bias because one of the important observations we’ve made is that the pattern could be related to favorable reasons for someone wanting to be taken to a usual site of care,” says coauthor James Feldman, MD, MPH, professor of emergency medicine and vice chair of research in Boston Medical Center’s department of emergency medicine.

It’s also likely that ambulance diversion— a controversial practice where a hospital goes on “diversion” status, meaning its ER is at full capacity and patients must be routed to other medical centers—is impacting the data. Ambulance diversion has been banned in Massachusetts since 2009.

“Massachusetts was the first and remains the only state that has blocked ambulance diversion. [It] is unfortunately a practice that remains common throughout the country,” says Dr. Feldman. “This research is a necessary first step to examine the effects ambulance diversion has on patient care and understanding the relationship between emergency utilization and healthcare disparities.”

Funding for this study was provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. n

football, a person’s risk of developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a devastating neurodegenerative disease, increases by 30 percent. And for every 2.6 years of play, the risk of developing CTE doubles. These new findings from an analysis of 266 deceased former amateur and professional football players—reported in Annals of Neurology by a team of researchers from the Boston University CTE Center—are the first to quantify the strength of the link between playing tackle football and developing CTE. In a critical distinction between many previous CTE studies, the analysis included dozens of brains of former football players who did not have CTE. That sizable control group provided enough data for the researchers to be confident in their discovery that there is a strong relationship between CTE risk and the number of years a person plays football.

“This study is a testament to the hundreds of families who have donated their loved one’s brain. . . . It is only because of this support that we can confidently estimate the strength of the relationship between duration of [football] play and risk of CTE,” says the study’s corresponding author Ann McKee, MD, a William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor of neurology and pathology at BU, director of the BU CTE Center, and chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System.

The large number of brain donations has provided the researchers with a big enough sample size (the CTE Center has amassed about 700 brains in total), that they can draw statistically relevant conclusions from their analyses.

that each year of play increases the odds of developing CTE by 30 percent,” says lead author Jesse Mez, MD, MS, assistant professor of neurology, director of BU’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center Clinical Core, and a CTE Center researcher. “We hope that these findings will guide players, family members, and physicians in making informed decisions regarding play.”

As part of their analysis, the researchers also looked at other potential variables, 20

including the total number of concussions, football positions played, a person’s age at first exposure to tackle football, their participation in other contact sports, their race, and the presence of other diseases, to see whether those factors had any influence on a person’s CTE risk, or if they were diagnosed with CTE, the severity of their CTE symptoms. They found no associations between these other variables and CTE risk or severity.

But the researchers did find that among players with a CTE diagnosis, their odds of developing severe symptoms of the disease doubled for every additional 5.3 years of football played.

Those who played tackle football fewer than 4.5 years were 10 times less likely to develop CTE than those who played longer, although several men who played four years or fewer were diagnosed with CTE, including three whose only contact sport was football.

Those who sustained the longest careers, playing more than 14.5 years, were 10 times more likely to develop CTE than those who played fewer years. But the researchers

noted that several players with football careers longer than 15 years did not have evidence of CTE. The average length of players’ careers in the National Football League is 3.3 years.

But the premature and sudden retirements of a number of stars in the league, including Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, and New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, have put renewed attention on the toll the game takes on players’ bodies.

The BU team drew their findings from analyzing the brains of 223 football players with CTE, and 43 without, from the brain banks at the Veterans AffairsBoston University-Concussion Legacy Foundation and the Framingham Heart Study, both of which are directed by Dr. McKee. Family members of the deceased provided information about the amount of time that the brain donors spent playing football or other contact sports while they were alive. For former professional players, an online database also was consulted. All of the brains underwent a complete neuropathological evaluation—the

researchers were not made aware of the clinical history of any of the donors before examination—and CTE diagnoses were made using well-established criteria.

A major concern of doing CTE research utilizing brain banks is that brain donors— who may pledge their brain tissue based on neurological symptoms they’ve experienced during life—may not be representative of the general population. These factors may bias the relationships being investigated by

researchers. But Drs. McKee, Mez, and their collaborators show in this latest study that the strength of the relationship between CTE and years of football played remained consistent even after they factored in these potentially biasing factors.

Although CTE currently can only be diagnosed after death, Dr. Mez says, “these findings move us closer to diagnosing CTE in life, which is critical for testing potential therapies and for guiding clinical care.”

RESEARCH AWARDS ■ Lewina Lee Awarded NIH Grant to Study Adverse Childhood Experiences, Later-Life Health Outcomes Lewina Lee, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and clinical research psychologist at the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at VA Boston, has received a five-year, $3.5 million, R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Aging to establish the Boston Early Adversity and Mortality Study (BEAMS).

Dr. Lee, along with co-principal investigator Daniel Mroczek, PhD, professor of medical social sciences and director of the Lifespan Personality and Health lab at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, will build a unique, “cradle-to-grave” data set that tracks the life span of three Boston-based cohorts of men who have been followed by researchers for over half a century, and augment it with information on their siblings. Using this rich data set, the study team will evaluate whether and how childhood adversity in the socioeconomic, environmental, and psychosocial domains bring about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, cardiometabolic disease, and premature death in later life.

“Scientists have been unable to fully understand the effects of early adversity on later-life health in large part because there is inadequate ‘life span data’ collected from birth to death to help map the sequelae of early adversity over age,” Dr. Lee explains. Bringing together three of the longest-running studies of adult lives, BEAMS will further enrich these studies with prospective information on early-life circumstances and later-life health through linkages to multiple administrative databases, such as Decennial Census, hospital birth records, and military records. “Given the wealth of midand later-life data we have already collected on these cohorts over decades, the cradle-to-grave data set created in BEAMS will afford rare opportunities to test exceptionally long-term, explanatory pathways from early adversity to later-life health,” Dr. Mroczek says.

Dr. Lee received her PhD in clinical psychology (aging) from the University of Southern California. She completed a clinical psychology internship at VA Palo Alto, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship on stress, health, and aging at the Boston University School of Public Health and VA Boston. Her research addresses

biological, psychosocial, and behavioral pathways that transmit the effects of psychosocial stress exposure onto physical and mental health. She also studies factors that mitigate or exacerbate the effects of stress on health and well-being across the life span.

The researchers hope that BEAMS will create a valuable resource for researchers interested in studying developmental processes, and inform intervention efforts aimed at mitigating the harmful health consequences of early adversity across the life span.

The Research Project Grant (R01) is the original and historically oldest grant mechanism used by the NIH.

■ David Felson Receives NIH Award to Study Osteoarthritis, Musculoskeletal Pain David Felson, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and epidemiology at BU Schools of Medicine and Public Health, has received a five-year, $3.6M National Institutes of Health (NIH) P30 Center Grant.

The award will allow for further clinical research in rheumatology at the Boston University Core Center for Clinical Research, and will provide broad clinical research expertise to a large multidisciplinary group of investigators whose research focuses on osteoarthritis and gout with a secondary emphasis on scleroderma, spondyloarthritis, osteoporosis, and musculoskeletal pain.

The center includes researchers from BU, Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and different sections at Harvard University. This group comprises individuals with backgrounds in rheumatology, physical therapy, engineering, epidemiology, biostatistics, genetics, evolutionary biology, and behavioral science, who critically review projects, provide methodologic guidance to research, and create new multidisciplinary collaborations.

estled in between the lights of Fenway Park and the commotion of Kenmore Square stands the luxurious Hotel Commonwealth, the elegant venue for the annual BUSM Scholarship Dinner.

In the Fenway Foyer overlooking the city, 31 medical students gathered to meet their scholarship donors for the first time. Thanks to scholarships established and funded by generous donors each year, students who otherwise could not afford a BUSM education can pursue their dream of becoming a physician. only their education but their intellectual, professional, and personal development as well.

For BUSM, occasions like this allow students and donors to meet face-to-face at a time when scholarships are crucial.

According to the Association of American Colleges, 75 percent of medical students in the class of 2018 graduated with debt; among those graduates the average debt was $196,520. Sixty-eight percent of the BUSM Class of 2019 graduated with debt; among those graduates the average debt was $221,264.

“It’s imperative that students make the most of their medical education. They shouldn’t be limited by boundaries or

specialties. As someone who’s been doing this for 40 years, it’s easy to think about what your school gave you and where your career is, and help those in need,” said Dr. Rod Hochman (MED’79).

As the sun set over the skyline, students and donors enjoyed dinner, drinks, and dessert in the ballroom. Each student in attendance introduced themselves and related which specialty they plan to go into, ranging from child neurology to emergency medicine. Two sentiments radiated throughout: honor and gratitude.

Dean Karen Antman, MD, introduced Nirisha Commodore (MED’22) and Rebecca Webb (MED’20), both of whom shared personal stories and spoke of how their scholarships were critical components to attending medical school.

“It is no secret that the cost of medical school can have major implications on the careers that physicians ultimately choose.

Although many begin training focused on serving their communities, the reality of debt can seem insurmountable. Your investment has helped to lighten this burden and started a path to continue paying it forward,” Ms. Commodore told the audience.

“As a future pediatrician putting myself through medical school, I cannot express the magnitude of difference your donations make in funding my education. On behalf of the students at BUSM, I thank you so very much for your incredibly generous gifts of the past and (hopefully) of the future,” Ms. Webb said. n

Impact: The Campaign for BU and the School of Medicine The Campaign for Boston University, which ended September 21, 2019, was a monumental effort with a spectacular result: $1.85 billion raised for financial aid, research, student life, facilities, and much more. More than 175,000 people donated to the campaign, which was launched to support financial aid, faculty and research, and facility improvements.

The results have transformed the Medical Campus, and include the establishment of 43 new endowed scholarships and 17 professorships; new buildings, such as the Medical Student Residence; renovated space, such as the A-4 Medical Student Center, 13th floor library study space, Hiebert Student Lounge, and Godley Digital Media Studio; support for research centers, among them the Shamim and Ashraf Dahod Breast Cancer Research Center, the Shipley Prostate Cancer Research Center, and the Spivack Center for Clinical and Translational Neuroscience.

Alumni Profile: Reshma Kewalramani, MD (MED’98) A force multiplier for advancing medicine in the interest of patients

R

ecently named the next president and CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc., Reshma Kewalramani (CAS’98, MED’98) will tell you she has lived a charmed life, despite the challenges she faced as an immigrant to the United States and in cultivating her work ethic, leadership qualities, and dedication to education and mentorship.

Currently Vertex’s chief medical officer and vice president, global medicines development and medical affairs, Dr. Kewalramani is the first woman to head a major biomedical company in the country. “Vertex is a company that tackles grave diseases with high unmet need where we understand causal human biology,” she says.

“This is incredibly meaningful to me, becoming my life’s work. What really drives me is advancing medicine in the interest of patients. I am in awe of what this company has done. The scientists and clinicians of Vertex deserve enormous credit.” She previously spent 12 years at Amgen in research and development.

An honors graduate of the Boston University combined seven-year liberal arts/medical education program, she is an internist with a specialty in nephrology. Born in Bombay, India, she and her family immigrated to the US when she was 11 years old. Coming from what she calls “a typical, close-knit Indian family,” she notes, “As an immigrant, you learn to be resilient and comfortable with change. Even though I spoke English, no one knew it because of my heavy accent. My clothes were different. I wasn’t familiar with pop culture, but I learned to work really hard and be grateful for opportunities.

key to unlocking innovation, and central to our mission. This is a powerful force. Vertex has been doing this for years, and so have I.” She is highly attuned to the gender gap in the sciences as well—“Women are attending college in ever-greater numbers and medical school enrollment of women has almost reached half, but the sciences and technology still lag behind in parity, including women holding leadership positions in these fields”—and recognizes that being a chief executive offers a platform to be a force multiplier. “The systems, processes, and structures we oversee must have values that include community, diversity, and inclusion.”

“Dr. Kewalramani has been a leader in advancing biomedical treatments for patients with rare and life-threatening diseases,” says Dr. Karen Antman, provost of BU Medical Campus and BUSM dean. “Her achievements directing clinical research and drug development and as a clinician, researcher, and mentor are outstanding.

We are delighted that she is part of the BU community.”

Dr. Kewalramani lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with her husband and twin teenage sons. The family has been engaged in a decade-long quest to visit the seven new wonders of the world. n

“There are many Indians in medicine, which I think comes from the investment in education and the belief that science, technology, and innovation are what is going to move the needle in giving back to society, and moving yourself from where you are to a better place.”

She credits her BU education with providing opportunities to experiment. “I had three glorious years as an undergrad,” she recalls. “I did a lot of work in the sciences, but I also took German and anthropology because I was interested in them.” The seven-year program made the transition to medical school easy, as her cohort lived and studied together, creating a strong support group. “It was hard work but fun too, so nurturing and supportive.”

Her experiences at the VA Hospital in Jamaica Plain and Boston Medical Center (BMC) gave her outstanding clinical training. “I had the best professors at the VA and the patients were so generous and understanding. Imagine learning how to draw blood—it takes a few tries. It was the same at BMC; the learning was exceptional with great teachers and such grateful patients. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”

Working in BUSM labs heightened her interest in research. “What attracted me was starting with a problem no one knows the solution to,” she says.

“Experimentation—beginning with an

unknown and ending with something that was not there before—excited me.”

While taking a year out before residency to do research in ophthalmology, Dr. Kewalramani decided to pursue internal medicine. “I wanted to take care of the whole patient and to think more broadly about health and medicine,” she explains. While at BUSM and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, the clinicians she most admired were nephrologists due to their bedside manner and critical thinking through medical problems. “It’s a very logical, first-principles– based discipline.”

Residency at Mass General and Brigham and Women’s Hospital opened her eyes to the world of clinical research, and she became fascinated with the idea of changing medicine in a big way. “I had this desire to advance medicine by leaps and bounds versus step by step, and in drug development, that is what you do,” she says. She cites advances in cystic fibrosis treatment.

“There were no medicines to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis in 2010.

Scientists and clinicians at Vertex worked on a heretofore unsolved problem and solved it in the past decade.”

Developing and supporting new generations of leaders, including those reflective of diversity, motivates Dr. Kewalramani; the outstanding mentors who opened opportunities for her drive her commitment to mentorship and inclusion. “If I were in a community and an environment where diversity wasn’t important, I’m not sure the opportunities would have been available to me,” she stresses.

She has linked the BUSM Early Medical School Selection Program to training programs at Vertex. “The BUSM program recruits young people of diverse backgrounds to learn about medicine and the sciences as potential career options and engage them early,” she says. “I’m delighted to be working with that program and Dr. John Polk (BUSM associate dean for diversity & inclusion) to ensure students of all walks of life have the opportunity to get involved in STEM professions.

“Vertex has a strong STEM program, including a learning lab where Boston Public School students have access to scientific knowledge and tools. Creating a pipeline is

Afternoon Accolades: BUSM Hosts Second Annual Distinguished Alumni Award Luncheon

USM Alumni Weekend kicked off Friday, October 4, with an afternoon of celebration and recognition. Following an open house and grand rounds, the second annual Distinguished Alumni Award ceremony and luncheon honored outstanding alumnus Dr. Ralph Sacco (MED’83) with the Alumni Association’s highest accolade.

Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs Jean E. Ramsey (MED’90, MPH’08) opened the ceremony and welcomed esteemed guests, including Dean Karen Antman, MD, and George Waters, MD (MED’94), who served as Alumni Association president and Dean’s Advisory Board representative for the past year.

Before beginning the ceremony, Dr. Ramsey recognized the members of the Class of 1969, who celebrated their 50th reunion this year; current students

circulated throughout the crowd with engraved medallions commemorating the special occasion. Class members shared tips for staying in touch (as they FaceTimed classmates who couldn’t be there), explained why they stay involved, and detailed what they learned from helping to prepare for such a big reunion.

Leonard Zwerling (MED’69), who played a key role in recruiting classmates to the event, noted, “Boston University has been very good to me. It is a great honor that I am able to see everybody here. I respect you all, love you all, and I respect Boston University for giving me a chance to become a doctor and fulfill my life’s dreams.”

Geri Feldman (MED’69) shared, “My kindergarten teacher knew I was going to be a doctor, which was why I had responsibility for the first-aid kit. The BU SixYear Program chose me as one of eight women in their third class. BU has forever changed my life.”

Dr. Waters introduced Dr. Sacco, an international expert in stroke epidemiology, prevention, and health disparities, chair of neurology at the University of Miami Miller

School of Medicine, and chief of neurology at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital.

A member of the National Academy of Medicine, he was the first neurologist to serve as the president of the American Heart Association (AHA).

Dr. Sacco is a fellow of both the Stroke and Epidemiology Councils of the AHA, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Neurological Association, and currently serves as president of the American Academy of Neurology. He also is a member of the American Association of Physicians and has been a member of the World Stroke Organization since 2008, serving on the board of directors.

Dr. Sacco joined the Columbia faculty and started the Northern Manhattan Study (focused on underserved and understudied black and Latino populations), modeled after the Framingham study, publishing a Winter 2020 | bumc.bu.edu

He has published extensively in the areas of stroke prevention, treatment, epidemiology, risk factors, vascular cognitive impairment, human genetics, and outcomes, and is listed among the 2017 and 2018 highly cited researchers in medicine.

As a medical student, he worked at the Framingham Heart Study under the mentorship of Dr. Philip Wolf, who was

in attendance, which inspired his work in stroke and epidemiology. Dr. Sacco spoke on the importance of scholarships, mentorship, and alumni engagement.

“I am grateful to Boston University and Dr. Philip Wolf for being a mentor and giving me my start,” he said. “It’s important that we, as alumni, continue to be passionate to the place that gave us our start. I am grateful for that start and want to continue to give back.”

Energy, Excitement, and Engagement: EMSSP Homecoming Weekend 2019

S

tudents and alumni of the Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP) spent the final days of summer in Boston enjoying a memorable homecoming weekend sponsored by the BUSM Alumni Association. EMSSP alumni traveled from Washington, D.C., North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Massachusetts to attend the second annual event.

EMSSP is a nationally recognized, early assurance program that provides a supportive environment for a gradual transition into the medical school curriculum during the summer terms after sophomore and 36

junior years as well as the final undergraduate year. Students who meet all program requirements can expect to enroll at Boston University School of Medicine upon completion of their undergraduate education.

There are now 13 participating colleges and universities within this pipeline.

Today, BUSM’s EMSSP program includes 27 undergraduate students, 31 medical students, and more than 85 alumni (tracking began in 2010). Developed in 1982 with a consortium of historically black colleges and universities, the program has since expanded to include partnerships with schools that have large Latino and Pacific Island populations.

As the afternoon came to an end, Dr. Waters turned over the Alumni Association presidency to Dr. Frank MacMillan (MED’95), owner and president of Merrimack Valley Gastroenterology and a clinical instructor of Socio-Medical Sciences and Community Health at BUSM. Dr. MacMillan has been an active member of the Mass Medical Society since 1991 and a member of the Society’s House of Delegates since 2005. n

The weekend kicked off on Friday, September 20, with an evening reception of reflection, mingling, and music at Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen. The next morning, students and alumni gathered for breakfast, an open mic discussion, and roundtable chats. Facilitated by Jean E. Ramsey (MED’90, MPH’08); EMSSP Program Director Samantha Kaplan, MD, MPH; alumni Drs. Dallas Reed (MED’10), Michael Harrell (MED’14), and Jason Sherer (MED’16); and current student Vinson Cobb (MED’22), attendees discussed a wide range of topics, including: • transitioning from student to doctor, • enhancing wellness in residencies, • focusing and pushing yourself, • handling microaggressions, • improving financial literacy, and • finding ways to balance and recharge yourself.

“This weekend is special because it gives current students an opportunity to network, unencumbered, with alumni young and old.

We can get to know the younger students, build connections with them, and try to pass on some of the lessons we learned in an effort that they won’t have to jump as high over those hurdles as we did,” noted Dr. Harrell, a BMC ophthalmology resident.

“It’s great to have people like Michael come back, share knowledge with us, and have that open-door communication, whether it’s call, email, or text, or even walk over if they’re local,” said Mr. Cobb, who’s helping to lead the current student initiative.

Following the open mic, attendees shared lunch grouped by specialty, ranging from ophthalmology to family medicine.

Sunday’s farewell brunch was complete with dancing, a DJ, and a special musical interlude by Lance Martin, administrative assistant, Diversity & Inclusion. Longtime EMSSP staff member Malissia Evans was presented with a special photo album to recognize her compassion, hard work, and lasting impact on the program for the past 35 years.

JoAnn Thomas-Lewis (MED'20), the Kenneth C. Edelin, MD, Scholarship recipient from the US Virgin Islands, recalled that although her parents encouraged her to go to medical school, the prospect of debt was daunting. She told the crowd how grateful she was for the financial assistance: “EMSSP changed my life forever; changed my life for the better. You enter as a stranger, but leave with lifelong friends and family.”

Summer may have come to an end on this weekend, but the EMSSP program will continue to prepare students for medical school and create a supportive network of peers year-round. n

Don’t Wait to Come Back: BUSM Alumni Weekend 2019

Autumnal spices. Alumni returning to campus. All represent the best parts of the season and perfectly complement BUSM Alumni Weekend.

This year’s festivities included an open house, student-led campus tours, the Distinguished Alumni Award ceremony and luncheon, and, of course, the alumni reception and class dinners held at the Sheraton Boston.

The Saturday afternoon Deans’ Town Hall was new to this year’s schedule of events. The forum offered an opportunity for alumni to discuss the state of the school with key leadership, including Dean Karen Antman, MD; Priya Garg, MD, associate dean for medical education; and Kristen Goodell, MD, associate dean for admissions, as well as two current students, Madhura Shah (MED’23) and Stuart Armstrong (MED’20). Dean Antman recapped the Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation, touted the success of the overall University development campaign, and urged the importance of BUSM’s scholarship efforts in the midst of the free tuition trend at other medical schools.

Diana Perry (MED’94) addressed the students in the crowd and on the panel: “I am so proud to be sitting here with my classmates from 1994—we haven’t been back to this campus for 25 years. My advice to the students sitting up there: once you leave and go off to do your residencies, don’t wait 25-plus years to come back!” Dr. Perry brought her daughter, a junior in high school, and asked for words of wisdom on becoming a future doctor.

of patients in some way,” recommended Dr. Goodell. “When I’m reading applications, some truly meaningful, sincere words of clarity come from students who have these experiences.”

Dr. Garg explained the intricacies of today’s curriculum and where she sees it going: “We’re hoping that in 2022, we’ll have more of a case-based, integrated curriculum. Our doctoring curriculum is focused on communication skills, physical exams, and clinical reasoning. We are thinking about how to embed the mission of the school into the curriculum.”

Other topics of discussion included patient simulation, clerkships, student and

faculty demographic breakdown, class attendance and flexible learning, electronic health records and patient interaction, and the importance of coming back to campus.

The event closed with a special performance from the student a cappella group, The Doctors’ Notes.

After the afternoon on campus, attendees regrouped at the Sheraton Boston for an elegant evening reception and class dinners— the perfect way to celebrate with friends on a crisp, fall night in New England! n

IN Memoriam

1952 Frank Pettinga, 92, of Holland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Suzanne; children Deb (Ron), Jane (David), Fred (Jayne), and Cindy (Mark); 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Frank is now with his parents Rhine and Adriana, and his brothers Cornelius and Paul, who all preceded him in death. Frank loved God, his family, and serving his patients. He enjoyed worshipping with believers around the world and, upon moving to Holland, became a member of Third Reformed Church. Frank was born in Beaverdam, Michigan, graduated from Holland Christian High School, and served in the US Navy for two years.

After graduating from Calvin College, he earned his MD degree from Boston University and later, an MPH from the University of Michigan. He thoroughly enjoyed the practice of family medicine for 19 years in Muskegon, Michigan, where many affectionately called him “Doc.” He then joined the US State Department, where he served as embassy physician for 13 years, enjoying assignments in Afghanistan, Austria, Egypt, Washington, D.C., and the Dominican Republic.

When Frank returned to the United States, he served for seven years as the medical director of Hackley Hospital in Muskegon and six years in Hackley’s Occupational Medicine department.

1953 Louis M. Geller, 96, of Auburndale, Massachusetts, and formerly of Brookline, Massachusetts, passed away on August 16, 2019.

He was the husband of Mona and father of Lynne and Gary. Lou worked all his professional life as a private practice psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, a field he loved. He was a proud member of the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and created and managed original art displays for their Back Bay office. This was truly a labor of love, as he treasured the visual arts and collected artwork all his life.

He was also a World War II veteran. Born in

New York, he moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, as a teenager, where he lived with his parents and brother, William, and sister, Selma, with extended family close by. Family was the single most important thing in his life.

1960 Ann Hallman Pettigrew, 84, of Santa Cruz, California, died peacefully at home on November 18, 2018, with her husband and son beside her. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas Pettigrew, professor of social psychology and sociology at Harvard for 25 years and now a research professor at UC-Santa Cruz; her son, Mark; two grandchildren, Aysha and Yousif; her brother, G. Victor Hallman III; and a niece, Susan Hallman Leeds. In 1952, Ann graduated valedictorian of Moorestown High School and entered Radcliffe College, then the women’s division of Harvard. Told that medical doctor was not an “appropriate” profession for “ladies,” Ann nonetheless enrolled in premed courses, where men vastly outnumbered women. Ann was the only one in her Radcliffe class of 233 to go on to medical school and one of only five women in a class of 66 at Boston University Medical School. She graduated in 1960 near the top of her class, and after an internship began a residency in pathology.

Gross inequities in healthcare for the poor, minorities, elderly, women, and children— plus the 1960s new health programs—led to her lifelong commitment to improving care for these underserved groups. She entered the joint residency program of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

She was among the first group of women physicians to receive a Josiah Macy, Jr. scholarship from the Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study. Ann earned her master’s in public health in 1966 and was elected to the Delta Omega Honor Society.

As director of Massachusetts’ health facilities licensure and certification pro-

grams, she was most proud of revising and establishing perinatal and pediatric programs throughout the commonwealth that led to a significant reduction in premature and newborn deaths. She also promoted and developed neighborhood health centers to bring high-quality healthcare to poor and minority communities.

This work became a model for other states and led to her appointment to a National Academy of Sciences Commission. She served as a consultant for the US Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate other state programs. She was also appointed to the Women’s Advisory Committee of the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington, D.C., and was listed in Who’s Who of American Women. In 1976, Ann became assistant director of the Cancer Control Program of Boston’s Sidney Farber Cancer Center. She organized and served as executive secretary of a committee to coordinate cancer programs, and evaluated cancer control programs throughout the nation for the National Cancer Institute.

Later, Ann worked for several years as a health careers coordinator at Harvard.

Based on both her undergraduate and medical experience, she developed a guide for pre­med students with special materials for women and minorities and counseled hundreds of students on opportunities in health careers.

In 1980, Tom accepted a professorship at UC-Santa Cruz, and the family moved west.

Ann obtained a federal grant to organize the Pediatric Intensive Care Network comprising 10 major pediatric centers in Northern and Central California, with specialized services for critically ill children. The network developed comprehensive regional pediatric emergency and critical care systems throughout the region; California’s Emergency Medical Services recognized Ann with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. In 1991, the American Academy of Pediatrics had commended her for her “unrelenting and exemplary efforts to reduce unneces-

sary harm and death to California children by creating systems of pediatric emergency and critical care.” Ann retired in 2000 and the network established an annual Ann H. Pettigrew Pediatric Critical Care Lectureship in her honor.

Ann published numerous articles, including an early comprehensive review of the incidence, prevalence, and causes of disease by racial and ethnic origin. She served on the Perinatal Welfare Committee of the Massachusetts Medical Society and as president of the Division of Adult Health of the Massachusetts Public Health Association. An ardent supporter of women’s reproductive rights, she also served on the Executive Committee of Planned Parenthood of Massachusetts and in California, on the Hospital Care Committee of the Northern California Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and as executive secretary of the California Pediatric Critical Care Coalition. Locally, she served on the Board of Directors of Hospice of Santa Cruz County.

1963 Victor I. Hochberg, 87, of Newark, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2019, at his home in Delray Beach, Florida, with his loving partner, Bevi Schram, at his side. A registered pharmacist, Victor graduated from Rutgers University College of Pharmacy. He served two years in the US Army before beginning medical school in Amsterdam, Holland, and graduating with honors from Boston University School of Medicine. After an internship at University Hospital in Boston, he completed residency programs in neurology at Mt. Sinai Hospital (New York) and University Hospital in Boston. In 1967, Victor moved to Florida to begin his medical practice and became the first neurologist at Hollywood Memorial Hospital (now Memorial Regional Hospital).

He served with distinction as chief of neurology and later, chief of staff. Throughout his career, he was a dedicated and highly respected physician. Those who knew Vic-

tor will also remember him as a gentleman and good friend with a keen sense of style who was kind, warm, and witty and enjoyed all genres of music. He also had an endless thirst for knowledge of science and medicine, finance, and food and wine. His beloved wife of 34 years, Femme (Lustiq), whom he met in Holland, passed away in 1997. He is survived by his nephews and nieces.

1969 Nancy H. Dawber, of Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Thomas R. and Eleanor (Ronimus) Dawber of Naples and Wellesley, Massachusetts. A graduate of Wellesley High School and Vassar College, she was a research assistant at Harvard Medical School’s Thorndike Laboratories before taking up the study of medicine. She received her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed her internship at the University of California Hospital in San Francisco before moving to Belleair Beach, Florida, where she partnered to form Clearwater Pediatrics.

Nancy was outgoing, fun-loving, and adventurous. Her travels took her on safari in Africa, sailing around the Greek isles, and backpacking throughout Europe—including Knutsford, England, where she reconnected with relatives.

A multifaceted artist, Nancy’s many interests included photography, quilting, jewelry making, stained glass work, music, and gardening. She treasured time spent with family and friends and took pleasure in hosting luncheons and dinners. Perhaps her greatest joy of all came from her many beloved Boston Terriers.

Robert Joseph Szarnicki of San Francisco, California, died August 1, 2019. Bob attended The Pontifical College Josephinum seminary prior to graduating from HarBrack High School. He went on to Columbia College in New York, finding great friends

and the intellectual challenge that inspired his desire to become a doctor. Receiving his MD from Boston University, he completed his surgical residency at Boston City Hospital, followed by residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City (1970) and University Hospital in Boston (1971). He then served as exchange registrar at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, Wales (1972).

Falling in love with heart surgery, Bob returned to Boston as chief resident at University Hospital, followed by chief cardio thoracic resident at Harlem Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. His training led him to serve as senior registrar of the thoracic unit at the Hospital for Sick Children (now the Great Ormand Street Hospital) in London. This final post deepened his love for pediatric heart surgery, a then-developing field serving and saving babies born with congenital heart defects. In 1977, Bob came to San Francisco to build the adult and pediatric heart program at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center, which eventually became California Pacific Medical Center, now Sutter Health.

With more than 200 regional, national, and international publications and more than 100 lectures on adult and pediatric cardio-thoracic surgery, he ended his career as a pioneer and leader in a field that decreased patient morbidity from 95 percent to 5 percent within a 20-year period. Bob is survived by his wife Mary, children Anna and Tim, and daughter-in-law Megan. n

I ocean-swim three times a week, walk, and tai chi. I volunteer at a seniors program at U. Hawaii facilitating a writing group, and also at a marine nature preserve. I put out a fiction blog with a completed med novel (at a fictionalized BCH) at storieslongnshort.blog and am continuing with another.”

1959 John M. Bennett of Pittsford, New York, writes, “Still actively working as a hematopathologist, signing out cases at University of Rochester Medical Center. Served on WHO/ Blue books for hematopathology for the last three issues; 600 publications on classification and prognosis of leukemias. Editor of Leukemia Research for 21 years, up to 2013.”

Sandra S. Kaplan of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, writes, “I graduated in 1959, have been retired for over 10 years, and am about to celebrate my 85th birthday. If circumstances had permitted, I would still be enjoying a part-time commitment in an academic setting. Except for being almost completely deaf and balance-impaired, I celebrate each day. I resumed piano studies 10 years ago after a long hiatus and have remarried. At our lakeside retreat, even cloudy days are beautiful.”

1961 Stafford Cohen of Newton, Massachusetts, writes, “Amazon has just posted a medical memoir that I authored around my 51 years as a Boston-based clinician and cardiologist, Doctor, Stay By Me. Between the covers are 45 tragic, humorous, and uplifting short stories about encounters with memorable patients and other medically related experiences. I was fortunate to have practiced medicine when there was time to know my patients well. Most of the stories took place

before visits were abbreviated, before clinicians had to advocate for multiple entities in addition to their patient, and before the physician-patient relationship was devalued to the dissatisfaction of both the majority of clinicians and patients.”

1962 G. G. Gascon of North Falmouth, Massachusetts, writes, “Retired from Brown University Medical School, now called Alpert School of Medicine, in 2002, and technically remain on the faculty as Professor Emeritus, Clinical Neuroscience and Pediatrics. Retired from active clinical practice in October 2017 as a pediatric neurologist for Massachusetts General Hospital. A professional autobiography was published in the Journal of Child Neurology: ‘A Clinician’s Odyssey,’ 2009; 24; 379 Generoso G. Gascon. I have published two memoirs with limited-print books, more personal than professional and for private distribution rather than commercial sale, in the last three years: From Sea to Shining Sea, Oahu to Old Silver, an autobiographical memoir, starting with my childhood in Hawaii to retirement in North Falmouth, Cape Cod; An American in Arabia, That was then, This is now, is about my 15 years, off and on, living, working, and teaching in Saudi Arabia. All this relates to what ultimately led me to medicine, and what I’ve been doing since graduation from BUSM.”

1964 Lawrence A. Yannuzzi of New York, New York, was named the winner of the 2019 American Society of Retinal Specialists Founders Award.

Dr. Yannuzzi received the lifetime achievement medal in the field of retinal diseases at the group’s annual meeting, where he presented the Annual Founders Award Lecture, “The Legend of Cuticular Drusen.”

1969 William H. Frishman of Scarsdale, New York, writes, “I am completing my 22nd year as chairman of medicine at New York

Medical College and director of medicine at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. From 1982 to 1997, I was chief of medicine at the Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center and associate chairman of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. I continue to be active in the clinical practice of internal medicine and cardiology, clinical research, journal editing, and writing. My most recent book, Triumph over Tragedy (Science International), is a scientific memoir. I also have been an AOA (American Osteopathic Association) chapter councilor for over 40 years at both New York Medical College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. My wife of 48 years, Esther, and I have three children and seven grandchildren who all live close by our home in Scarsdale.”

Marc F. Hirsch of Bowling Green, Kentucky, writes, “Retired from medical practice.

Between 2012 and 2018 I self-published three books in a series of detective fiction set in the 1950s NYC, called the Alice White Investigator Series: The Case (2012), Hard Case (2014), and The Con Case (2018). I’m working on my fourth. They’re all available as paperbacks and Kindles on Amazon, and the third book also is an audiobook on Audible.com. I am currently being considered for a role in a local theater production for which I auditioned.”

Michael Salcman of Baltimore, Maryland, writes, “This has been a very busy and conflicting year. Ilene and I met at Boston University and celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with a May trip to Edinburgh, Newcastle, and Amsterdam. I was invited by the Hippocrates Society to give a lecture about the construction of Poetry in Medicine, my anthology of classic and contemporary poems on doctors, patients, illness, and healing. The evening before, I gave a joint poetry reading at Newcastle University with noted poet and activist Carolyn Forche.

1979 Karen Brown of Salt Lake City, Utah, writes, “After spending 45 years on the East Coast, I accepted a position as chief of interventional radiology at the University of Utah last year, and am now acclimating to the Mountain West. The position has been challenging and exciting at the same time. One of my daughters lives in Salt Lake, and I appreciate getting to see her more often. My other daughter is in medical school and, as a result, I don’t see her that much anyway. You may understand if you can remember back to medical school.”

1982 Ron Ragland of Washington, D.C., writes, “There’s not a lot to say about the life of a retired neuroradiologist, except that the disciplines BUSM solidified in me informed my practice of medicine; such continues to inform my daily life. I’m probably a bit more introspective than some people—that, along with the attributes noted by Dr. James, are quite significant for any good neuroradiologist. And, I would posit that these qualities are often useful in the life of most who strive to be decent/good persons. Nope, I’ve not written any new (nor old) books. I, however, was so driven in my former practice that the reports of neuro-imaging studies/procedures my team and I churned out were said to be of such high quality that I wish I had been wise enough to merely retain my articulations of radiologic studies/procedures. If they had been correctly compiled and edited, they would have been an excellent foundation for a textbook. Ah, hindsight: it’s 20/20!”

1984 Marcia Katz of Winter Park, Florida, writes, “After serving for 16 years as the medical director of the Maconda Brown O’Connor Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center at Baylor College of Medicine, I moved to Orlando, Florida, to become the associate dean of clinical affairs and professor of medicine at the University of

Ron Sunog of Newton Highlands, Massachusetts, writes, “I had an article about the early introduction of allergenic foods to infants published in Contemporary Pediatrics in September 2019. The article is an excerpt from a book I had published earlier this year, Eat The Eight: Preventing Food Allergy with Food and the Imperfect Art of Medicine. The book was inspired by the LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2015, that showed the early introduction of peanuts to high-risk infants prevents peanut allergy. Still practicing pediatrics, I have seen guidelines for infant feeding of the allergenic foods come full circle over the past 20 years. My curiosity about how the changing guidelines were established, how

physicians and patients alike have received and responded to these guidelines, and how evidence for guidelines is understood and implemented, motivated me to do the research that resulted in Eat The Eight.”

1986 David X. Cifu of Midlothian, Virginia, writes, “David X. Cifu, MD (CLA’86, MED’86), associate dean for innovation and system integration at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, has been awarded a five-year, $50 million Long-term Impact of Mild Brain Injury award from the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense to study the short- and long-term effects of repeated combat- and blast-related concussions on service members and veterans. This grant represents a continuation of the six-year, $62.2 million Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium award initiated in 2013. Dr. Cifu is leading a nationwide team (including from Boston University) of more than 50 researchers from 13 states, including 12 Veterans Affairs hospitals, six military treatment facilities, five Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Centers, and 15 academic universities, to enhance understanding of the role of repeated concussions in disability and neurodegeneration. The consortium, based at Virginia Commonwealth University, is following the largest, prospective, longitudinal cohort (>1,700), is serving as a nidus for intervention trials for, and has developed the largest epidemiological database (>2 million unique individuals) of, service members and veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.”

2017 Jamie Weinand of Tucson, Arizona, writes, “I was just accepted for a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the University of Arizona-Tucson Program and will be starting in July 2020, immediately after my graduation from my family medicine residency program in southern New Mexico.” n

Message From The Dean

Dear Alumni, Friends, and Colleagues, Welcome 2020! A new decade to learn, teach, and discover on the frontline of medicine at Boston University.

We have much to share with you in this issue of BU Medicine. First and foremost, we received a full, eight-year accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. We received no citations, but we must monitor our learning environment, as well as continue to address student debt and student health services.

Many thanks to all who participated in this four-year process, particularly Dr. Debbie Vaughan, who directed the process; Dr. Tom Moore, who chaired the faculty self-study; co-chairs of the Independent Student Analysis Kathryn Ivy, MD (MED’19 and now an internal medicine resident at Vanderbilt), Aditya Mithal, MD-PhD candidate (MED’23), and Nikita Saxena, MD (MED’18 and now a pediatric resident at BMC/Boston Children’s); and the 220 faculty, staff, and students who prepped and met with the site visitors.

Thanks to you and our many other generous donors, the decade-long Campaign to Transform Boston University School of Medicine reached a successful conclusion and raised $353 million in support, improving our campus facilities, doubling our endowed scholarship aid, advancing cutting-edge research, and supporting faculty development.

Foundations played an integral role, committing nearly $200 million to the school over the course of the campaign—critical support for faculty who are demonstrating proof of concept or piloting new interventions. Our cover story, which begins on page 10, illustrates some of our campaign highlights.

Let’s not lose this momentum! The campaign addressed medical school affordability and student debt, raising

$34 million in scholarship support and establishing 43 new endowed scholarship funds. Yet we know that debt remains a real concern for our students. Please join me in continuing to support our scholarship aid, our highest fundraising priority.

Also in this issue of BU Medicine, we share some faculty achievements: • Deborah Stearns-Kurosawa, PhD, is our new Associate Provost/Dean ad interim for Graduate Medical Sciences.

• Christopher D. Andry, MPhil, PhD, has been named Chair, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.

• Ann McKee, MD, was named a 2019 Service to America Medalist and received the Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Medal from the Partnership for Public Service.

• Joshua Barocas, MD, received the Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship, a national, annual award by the Association of American Medical Colleges for a junior faculty member demonstrating leadership in addressing disparities in medical education and healthcare.

• Megan Young, MD, received a 2019 Women Physicians Section Inspiration Award from the American Medical Association.

In addition, we celebrate Reshma Kewalramani (CAS’98, MED’98), who becomes president and CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. in April, the first woman to head a major US biomedical company.

Students and alumni from our Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP) enjoyed a memorable homecoming weekend.

Our current students enthusiastically interacted with EMSSP alumni, who are committed to creating a supportive network for them.

But most importantly, this issue is about you—our alumni, faculty, staff, friends, foundations, and corporations. We appreciate all of your contributions, highlighted in our donor report, that demonstrate your commitment to our future and our ongoing mission to improve health and healthcare.

Sarkis J. Kechejian (MED’63) was born and raised in Queens, New York. His parents were immigrants and survivors of the Armenian genocide who worked hard, were involved with their church community, and were happy with their new life in America.

“I have memories of cracking and preparing walnuts for 100 trays of my mother’s baklava donations to the church,” recalls Dr. Kechejian. His parents’ hard work and dedication to others would be instilled in his way of doing things, and ultimately, his inspiration for giving.

After attending NYU, Dr. Kechejian made his way to Boston University for medical school. He worked summer jobs, received financial aid, and ended up graduating with only $10,000 in debt.

In the ‘90s, Dr. Aram Chobanian invited him to be a member of the School of Medicine Board of Visitors to provide guidance and support for students and the school.

“I couldn’t believe how much tuition costs had risen. Dedicated students shouldn’t be burdened with a mountain of debt.”

By the 2000s, Dr. Kechejian made two generous $1 million donations. Recognizing the significant need for student financial assistance, he established the Kechejian Family Scholarship Fund—the first of its kind for BUSM students.

“We all stand on the shoulders of others—we didn’t get here alone. I have always been very grateful for the excellent education I received at the medical school. It truly is one of the many shoulders I still stand on today. I hope my scholarships, in turn, will inspire students to do the same when they are able,” he said. Students who receive funds from Dr. Kechejian are encouraged to write to him about themselves so he can learn more about their background and journey to becoming a doctor.

Today, Dr. Kechejian is a cardiologist, president of K Clinics, located in North Texas, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Alliance Health, Inc., and president of the Kechejian Foundation.

At 81 years young, Dr. Kechejian has a few words of advice for his peers who may be on the fence about donating: “Don’t give until it hurts . . . give until it feels good. Also remember, the last suit we wear doesn’t need any pockets.”
