RESIDENCE HALL

Descriptions

Residential College (ResCo)

› Housing primarily first-year students, the newly renovated ResCo offers a wide range of experiences to its students, staff, and four full-time, live-in faculty members.

› While living in ResCo, a student has the opportunity to interact with faculty outside of the classroom in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Faculty eat in the dining room, participate in intramural events with students, and host dinners and other varied educational events.

› Amenities:

Residential College

› 24/7 Pizza ATM

› Microwaves and sinks in each wing

› Kitchenette with stove on all second-floor wings

› Laundry rooms in each wing

Irvington House

› Quiet and social study rooms in each wing

› Front desk with 24/7 mail retrieval lockers

› Social lobby and mezzanine with study rooms, ping pong, social areas with TV screens

› Business Center with print station and additional study space

› Butler University, in partnership with American Campus Communities, introduced Irvington House in fall 2018—a state-of-the-art, 647-bed, suite-style residential facility.

› With a cardio fitness room, numerous computer stations and study areas, and a welcoming social lounge complete with billiards, ping pong, and arcade games, you’ll find plenty of ways to meet new friends here. Laundry facilities are available on each of the building’s four floors. Outside, there are two lush courtyard spaces to enjoy in between your classes, and a fire pit that’s perfect for weekend relaxation.

Fairview House

› Recreation Center and Social Lounge with pool table, ping pong, and arcade games

› Butler University, in partnership with American Campus Communities, introduces Fairview House—a state-of-the-art, 633-bed, predominantly sophomore student residence hall which opened fall 2016.

› Amenities:

› Recreation and Gaming Lounge with balcony overlooking courtyard

› Media Lounge and Social Space with video display walls and fireside casual seating

› Business Center with print stations and private study space

› Cardio Fitness Room with modern equipment and workout/yoga space

WHO’S BRINGING WHAT?

We encourage you to reach out to your roommate/podmates to coordinate what shared items each person is bringing, prior to move-in. Below are some examples of items that can be shared within the room/ pod. (Please note, this list is not exclusive.)

WHAT TO EXPECT

Unit Meetings

in the Residence Halls

Your unit is a small group of people who share the same residential community and Resident Assistant as you do. Your first meeting will be on your first night at Butler.

Resident Assistants

A Resident Assistant (RA) is a peer leader who is here to serve as a resource and point of contact for personal, social, and academic concerns during the year.

Faculty-in-Residence

ResCo has four resident faculty members and Irvington has two resident faculty members who live in the building and are committed to learning outside of the classroom. Make sure to say hello and check out their events!

Programs and Events

We’re excited to help you build a community here at Butler. Programs and events will occur all year long and are fun ways to connect with other people in your unit, hall, or campus wide.

MOVE-IN PROCESS

Check-in:

Hinkle Fieldhouse Parking Lot (510 W. 49th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208)

Before arriving on campus:

Please label all boxes and larger items with your name and assigned room information. Complete your orientation waiver if you are 18 or older.

At your check-in time:

Drive through a series of checkpoints in the Hinkle Fieldhouse parking lot where you will:

› Pick up your student ID and your room key at the check-in location. You will also pick up your orientation T-shirt.

› If you have not submitted a picture for your ID, you will need to go to the Parking Services Tent located in the Hinkle Fieldhouse Parking Lot in the Check-In Process before you can check in to your Residence Hall or receive your orientation materials.

› Please note, you will not be able to enter your residence without your ID.

› Leave the Hinkle Fieldhouse Parking Lot and follow a check-in route map that will be given to you in the orientation tent.

› Drive to your Residence Hall and remain in your vehicle.

› Reminder: only one vehicle per student is permitted to go through the residence hall unloading process. Additional vehicles or return trips will not be permitted.

› The movers will unpack your car. Please do not exit your car while the movers unload your vehicle. The movers will take your (pre-labeled) belongings to your room.

After unloading, drive to the Sunset Avenue Parking Garage (4702 Sunset Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46208) on campus.

Park your car and return to your Residence Hall. Please only enter through the marked side doors; do not enter through the same door as the moving company.

› The parking garage will be open at this time.

› Please note there is no overnight parking allowed for visitors.

Begin unpacking!

› Before you begin setting up your room, fill out the Room Condition Report completely.

› We ask that any helpers leave the building by 7:00 PM.

› Please note: unless there is an accessibility need, elevators will not be available.

If you arrive early, we will be unable to process your check-in, and you will need to wait until your designated check-in time. If you are unable to arrive at your assigned check-in time, please contact Residence Life at reslife@butler.edu. We will reassign your check-in time to the end of day. You must arrive before 5:00 PM ET. Move-in company assistance is not provided for late check-ins.

In the case of inclement weather, please check the Orientation website and your butler.edu email. All updates for inclement weather delays during the check-in process will be communicated through these mediums.

If you arrive on campus after 5:00 PM and need to get an ID, please visit the Butler University Police Department located at 525 W. Hampton Drive. BUPD can provide a blank ID for use until the Parking Services Office is open for normal business hours.

You will be sent your assigned move-in check-in time in early August.

DINING INFORMATION

Residential Meal Plans

Students living in residential housing choose one of the three designated plans for their semester dining needs. These plans are also available to anyone who might not live on campus, but wants to enjoy all that our cafés have to offer on a regular basis. Enjoy a balanced meal at our all-you-care-to-eat café, grab a snack on the go, or start your day with a coffee and breakfast pastry.

This plan is great for the healthy appetite with the option to eat nearly 3 meals a day in the café and extra snacks each week.

This plan works well for those that want a little bit of both, all you care to eat locations and retail locations like Starbucks.

This plan is best for those that plan to eat a little lighter in the café and purchase meals or snacks with flex dollars.

MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY

At Your Service

You can submit any work orders or maintenance requests using the Housing Portal located in my.Butler by using the following steps.

› Log in using your Butler SSO credentials.

› Click on the “Submit a Work Order” tab and select “New Work Order.”

› Select “My Room” and click on your Room Number; select the Category & Item.

› Include a detailed description and possible cause of the issue. Try to answer the What, When, Where, How.

› Once all information has been typed in, click “Submit Work Order.”

For Your Safety

Our staff takes many precautions to foster a safe living environment. Your room comes with life safety equipment that must stay plugged in and never tampered with including smoke detectors, sprinklers, strobes, sounders, and fire extinguishers (in the hallways).

As a member of our community, you play an important role in maintaining the safety of our community!

› All entry and exit doors should remain closed at all times. Use your Butler ID to enter your specific building and do not let others follow you inside.

› Keep your room and pod doors locked at all times and do not give your key to anyone else.

› Save the University Police Department’s number in your phone:

GET CONNECTED

TV Streaming Services

Stream everywhere, anytime, like between classes.

Butler no longer provides traditional cable television. Instead, residents have access to XFINITY On-Campus streaming service. You can stream live TV and XFINITY On Demand shows and movies on your laptop, tablet, smartphones, and other streaming devices.

HBO Max is also included, along with 20 hours of DVR storage and the ability to watch and record two shows at once.

To access:

1. Go to xfinityoncampus.com

2. Enter “Butler University” in the Search for your school box.

3. Log in using your Butler email and password.

4. Select “Watch Now” to begin streaming.

Internet

For Butler students/staff:

› Select BU Secure Wireless from the wifi menu. This will open a small window.

› Enter in your Butler username.

› Enter in your Butler password.

› Check the box to “Remember this network” or “Connect Automatically.”

For Butler guests:

› Select BU Guest/Open Wireless.

› There should be no password requirement and you should now have Internet access.

NEW STUDENT AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

New Student and Family Programs hosts Orientation starting at move in and finishes the day before the first day of classes. New Student and Family Programs will host events for the first few weeks of classes to make sure all students are acclimated to Butler and become an official part of the Bulldog Community. More information throughout the summer will be located on their website. butler.edu/orientation
