When you punch 88 seconds into the microwave instead of 90 because it's faster to hit the same button twice, you know it's time for a holiday. It's time to slow down. We at B&R are all about slowing down. Since the very beginning, a looong time ago, we've crafted our trips with this simple, eloquent "Slow down to see the world" approach. It speaks to the experiences we craft—and how we think one should live the good life! See you out there on foot or on a bicycle...

Provence Resplendent is the word that springs to mind when we think of Provence. Camus wrote here. Cézanne and Van Gogh painted here. Its breathtaking beauty is the kind that artists must seek a way to express. Imagine shimmering meadows. Smoky cypress spires. The intoxicating scent of lavender. Then imagine the finest chocolate infused with its aroma. (You didn’t think we’d forget you foodies, did you?)

This is rosé country, where the Grenache grape is king.

Loire Valley When French royalty needed some R&R, they built grand châteaux here and brought their lovers for weekend getaways. You’ll stay in a few of their palatial haunts, join a winegrowers’ fraternity, and dine like nobility in Touraine. Have we mentioned the vistas? The history? Here we feel compelled to drop a few names: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, Joan of Arc. You’ll be in good company.

Rest of France Iconic is our preferred word of choice here. Sample legendary vintages of extraordinary pedigree in stunning settings (including Germany on the Wine Grand Journey); do some magnificently moderate cruising past castles and prehistoric caves; or join La Tour’s eagerly anticipated 100th birthday celebrations.

Bordeaux to Dordogne Biking We begin in Bordeaux, where we’ve been travelling since the early days of B&R. Why? The biking is flat and the wine legendary. ’Nuff said! Piemonte Plan to taste truffles—the kind that travel from dirt to plate in a few hours. (You’ll forage for them with the Pavarotti of trifulau.) Plan to dine in style (it’s the birthplace of Barolos and has more Michelin stars than anywhere else in Italy). Plan to navigate rolling hills, and stroll medieval towns. If you get bored—not that it’s ever happened—we’ve got that covered, too. (We throw in The Alps.)

Tuscany Biking We know. There’s only so much beauty, culture and incomparable cuisine you can take. At a certain point, the rolling hills, cypress trees and mesmerizing light take their toll. There you are, gazing at a fabled hilltop town or magnificent Renaissance church, drinking wine made by maestros, feasting on locally prepared meals made by some of our oldest friends, and you reach critical mass. The pleasure is simply too great. We feel your pain.

Tuscany Walking What can we say about a place with so much pedigree it drops names like Michelangelo and Galileo, and so much attrazione it entices artists like Shelley and Twain? It’s the breathtaking views, incomparable cuisine and the way life is lived here. It’s also a walker’s paradise with well-marked paths across lush rolling hills to fabled hilltop towns. With apologies to Samuel Johnson, we’ll end with this: If you’re tired of Tuscany, you’re tired of life.

Puglia Biking Think Greece, with Italian parents. When two of the world’s most magnificent cultures collaborate, it’s nuts what you get: diverse art and architecture, Roman ruins, Baroque cathedrals, incredibly friendly locals, whitewashed villages, trulli, olive groves, masserie, homemade orechiette, organic country feasts—the list goes on. And yet, despite its sun-soaked coastline, turquoise waters and stunning beaches, at the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia remains very much under the radar.

puglia biking Perched on the Adriatic, marked by Greeks, Romans, Venetians, Normans and Spanish, Puglia embodies the magic of Old Italy. Italian Coast From Amalfi’s glitterati-glam coastline, to the Italian Lakes Old World opulence, expect luxury, moda italiana. Amalfitanis, it has been said, are unimpressed upon reaching the pearly gates, having lived in heaven all their lives. Spain With its volcanic flats, pastoral fields and peaks of the Pyrénées, this birthplace of surrealism is absurdly beautiful. It bears the imprimatur of the Moors, the Romans and French. It’s the home of the world’s most admired building designed by Frank Gehry. It’s tapas heaven. But then, any country that can lay claim to Miro, Gaudi, Goya, Picasso and Dali must have something going on.

catalonia biking Pedal cycling heaven (volcanic flats dwarfed by the Pyrénées, rolling pastoral hills, the ruggedly beautiful Costa Brava) in a place we’ve travelled longer than anyone else. This is Gaudi, Picasso and Dali territory. You’ll learn about the latter at the museum in Figueres. Experience Habaneras singers, too.

rioja biking Think Rioja and you tend to think wine, but artistic and culinary creativity has exploded here, plus there’s the gravity-defying architecture, so now think wine and design. Don’t forget spectacular rides along gorgeous vineyard roads, fortified towns, medieval history and Michelin dining. Bottom line? Divine.

There’s the peaceful Ayeyarwady River. There are the dazzling golden temples. Life moves at a calm remove here. Unspoiled is the word that springs to mind. So if you’ve been considering a visit, now would be the time.

"This expedition is fabulous. In a place with such challenging tourist issues, our guides made it seem like a breeze. One of the best B&R trips that we have ever been on!"

Latin America The scenery is mind-blowingly, jaw-droppingly spectacular: lush cloud forests, Andean salt pans, insanely stunning mountain vistas. There’s also the pace of life, and eclectic mash-up of traditions, native and colonial. In case that’s not enough to pique your interest, there’s this place you may have heard of that you approach through a sacred valley. It’s called Machu Picchu. We know. Some parts of the world just seem to get all the good stuff.

North America If a walk back in time is what you’re looking for, sometimes the best place to search for it is in your own backyard. Take, for instance, the fluid, graceful swings of the Masters; in the beer and pimento sandwich combo, which you can still buy for $4.50; in the roar that rises above the cathedral in the pines on the back nine. It’s all there. Now you can be, too. (And yes, bring your sticks. YOLO.)

augusta masters golf Practice with pros, golf at Cuscowilla, fly fish on Lake Oconee (renowned for bass), then grab your coveted Masters Patron Badge and pull up a chair or walk the 18 holes (a.k.a. trekking in the Himalayas). Southern charm casts a spell and dreams come true here. 3 NIGHTS | DEPARTS: apr Easygoing to Moderate FROM US$5,995 (+$955 SINGLE SUPPLEMENT)

You’ve followed the Masters religiously over the years... isn’t it time for a pilgrimage?

How far do you want to go? Choose your activity level, modify it on trip. We’ve classified our trips according to how far you might want to go each day, and how hilly the terrain is. But Day 3 dawns and you’re ready to up the ante? We’ve got extra routes. Day 4 brings a mysterious ache that can only be assuaged by a nice, long lunch? No problem—today you cruise. Once you’re on trip, you’re in control of how much you do—the choice is always yours.

Biking

Walking

easygoing 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills— all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip. If you’re in relatively good shape, you’ll be just fine.

easygoing 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill. You don’t have to be a fitness buff, just relatively active.

moderate 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort. Layover days accommodate varying preferences.

moderate 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints. Vigorous enough that you can dine later with a clear conscience.

challenging

challenging 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day in regularly hilly terrain. Routes follow high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.

50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.

More ways to go! Go multi-active (if you've got the stamina), go with the kids, or go on your own. Here are three more styles à la B&R.

MULTI-ACTIVE Our multi-active trips are exactly how they sound—fast-paced trips with activities all day long to guarantee you will never be bored! We’ll make sure you don’t just see it all, but you DO it all, too. Hike, snorkel, zipline, surf, kayak… the choices are endless. We give you options, you build your adventure!

FAMILY

vity vels

Family trips have comparable activity levels to the adult trips, but with the choice to do more or less. Plus there are many options, whether whitewater rafting, snorkelling or checking out the shops in town—whatever best suits you and your gang.

SELF-GUIDED Looking for a little more intimacy? Like to be self-reliant? These trips offer all the extraordinary routes, hotels and local contacts of a B&R trip—but with the autonomy that comes with being on your own. We give you myriad options each day—the hard part is choosing.

visit us online at BUTTERFIELD.COM  71

Put your wallet away. Flights aren’t included in the price of your trip (B&R travellers come from all over!), but once your trip starts, we pay for everything it makes sense to pay for. Great wine? Of course. Your shopping spree at Hermès? Umm, no.

Hotels Winning hotels are a hallmark of B&R. Sometimes grand, sometimes charming and intimate, always perfect for your trip. That’s the B&R style. Signature B&R Guides All services of B&R guide(s), who are adept at wearing many hats. They will do whatever it takes to make your trip hassle free, and are on call 24/7. Great Meals We include all meals when it makes sense, yet we understand that making a great dining discovery is rewarding, too. So sometimes we leave room for exploring on your own. Dietary Restrictions? B&R’s personalized service doesn’t end at the dining room door. Decades of building close relationships with our hoteliers, "restaurateurs and chefs make it easy for us to accommodate your every dietary need. Even in France. Table For Two? Each trip offers the opportunity to dine or lunch independently from the group… and we’ll happily make arrangements for you.

Fine Wine Wine (delicious and well-chosen) is included with meals. Easy Starts Our trips start where it makes the most sense: we choose convenient locations that enable a smooth transition into your trip. Transportation Included are all on-trip transfers by yacht, train, 4X4, plane, helicopter (and camels). All Baggage Handling Your baggage is transported from one hotel to the next. On signature trips this is done by local handlers so guides are devoted to you. All Tips We look after all the support along the way, including tips. We grease the wheels wherever it’s necessary—so all you have to worry about is having fun. Perfect Moments To really get to know the region, we experience it in deep and up close. That’s why every trip includes: tastings (local wines, olive oil, artisanal cheeses...); private tours of historic sites, galleries and museums with local experts; and visits with our local friends.

Everything You Need to Know Before each trip, travellers receive a link to a Trip Planner filled with local info. On the road, we provide a Travelogue with insider tips on everything from where to shop to the best places to hang out with locals. Pre-Trip Our guides complete a dry run of each trip the week before it departs. (We like to think of it as a dress rehearsal.) This way the only surprises on your trip are good ones. Nice Briefs Each morning, our guides brief you on the day’s options. We like to do this quietly, one-on-one, so you never get the feeling you’re in a meeting. There’s enough of that at the office. Amazing Routes All biking and walking outings include meticulous, easyto-follow route notes. By no means do you have to follow them, but if you do, we promise nothing short of spectacular—we like quiet county lanes, glorious vistas, and no one but us. Our guides always have additional scenic routes up their sleeves, too. Up for more of a challenge? All you have to do is ask.

There When You Need Us Our support vehicles are present along the day’s route to distribute refreshments, carry your purchases, and offer a lift when needed.

Walking Sticks Included on all walking trips, the use of lightweight Leki telescoping walking sticks, and water bottles in padded hip or pack-strap holsters that are yours to keep after your trip.

Local Support, 24/7 To support our travellers, B&R has offices in the region or we have someone living locally so there’s immediate B&R help 24/7.

Bike Helmets Don’t bother packing your noggin protector—we provide fantastic Bell or Giro helmets.

Family Trips These trips are not simply adult trips with kids tacked on. Anything but! They are three crafted trips in one: a trip for the parents; a trip for the kids; and a trip for the family. Time together, time apart… we find the balance. And we bring along kid equipment galore. From bikes, helmets, tandems and trailers to extra guides, vans and even cribs, we’ve got you covered.

Custom Bikes B&R has a customized fleet of fully equipped Cannondale hybrids and road bikes for all our European trips. For trips running outside of Europe, we offer the very best bicycles for the region. We have men’s and women’s models in five frame sizes. For the kids, Burley tandems, trailers and youth helmets. To view photos and review full specs of our bikes and other equipment, please visit butterfield.com.

Intangible B&R Tangibles The years of exhaustive research we’ve done on the ground; the countless personal relationships we’ve cultivated with everyone from hoteliers to chefs and local experts; and the dozens of people who work hard behind the scenes.

NEW! E-Bikes Want a little boost every now and then? Need help keeping up with your wife? Our e-bikes are regular pedal bikes that provide electric assistance whenever you want it. We plug it in at night, you get extra juice when you need it.

“We love that the trip price always seems to include 12-15 of the most congenial, interesting, fun travel companions we can imagine.” —J. santogrossi, B&R Traveller
