We never set out to be the biggest travel company... just the best.
t B& R
Nobody opens Champagne better than George.
(He s had a lot of practice) ’
The kind of president who doesn’t mind rolling up his sleeves
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: George Butterfield, B&R co-founder and travel legend (sorry George, but it’s true); Norman Howe, who recently returned to B&R to wear the yellow jersey; and Erik Blachford, who guided in his early 20s, moved on to help build a little company called Expedia, and then returned home—
it all two about travel, and Erik knows a thing or r George and Martha started with guiding fo
this time as partner.
There’s so much more to B&R than the high thread count of your sheets. Our kind of luxury takes you to a place you never knew existed. It’s a feeling of freedom. A feeling of exuberance. A feeling like you don’t need a watch or a wallet and you haven’t a care in the world. Wherever we travel, we delve deep into the heart of the local culture, your meals are some of the best in your life, and your sleeps every bit as delicious. But this merely sets the stage for the magical, ineffable part of B&R—the moments of discovery—and self-discovery—that you’ll never, ever forget. Gliding down Mont Ventoux, wind in your hair; doing yoga on the teak deck of our floating hotel in Halong Bay; contemplating life as you soak up the 360° view atop Snæfellsnes glacier… See you on the road!
George, Erik and Norman

why B&R?
Great Hotels PEACE OF MIND A million years ago when
George first approached hoteliers in France about hosting groups of cyclists, they were aghast. Monsieur, ze people who come ’ere do not arrive on bicyclette! Well, George sure won them over. Today, we may not arrive in Mercedes SLSs, but we get treated like we do. Better, actually. MIND BLOWING We stay at grand hotels,
but we also stay at converted monasteries, medieval castles and Maharajah’s palaces. Our hotel experiences are one-of-a-kind, culturally significant and full of style. Beyond Luxury? The hoteliers are our friends. And that means ridiculously good treatment for you.

ute, just as On the perfect ro t t you see is wha important as wha and tourists you don’t see: cars
Amazing Routes METICULOUSLY PLANNED We take our routes
very seriously, and make it our mission to craft the perfect ones. But you can’t find a great route simply by looking at a map. You have to know the turf. And for that, you need years of experience sussing out the most scenic roads, hidden spots and fascinating locals. WELL REHEARSED But here’s the thing—we
don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk. And ride the ride. The week before your trip, we send our guides on a dress rehearsal to travel and troubleshoot every inch of your route so your trip comes off without a hitch.
Gifted Guides GREAT MINDS Sure, they’re smart, über-
educated, speak a zillion languages and know the region inside-out. But those are just their basic qualifications. They’re also charming, enthusiastic and fun to hang out with—exactly the sort you’ll want to sit (or ride) beside. MIND READERS We hire everyone from
architects and photographers to botanists and travel writers. It’s not just how much they know or how eclectic their backgrounds are—they have an awareness you just can’t learn from books—like when precisely to refill your glass. You know, the important stuff.

WE TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING We’ve got
all the bases covered so you’re free to roam. Wondering where your bags are? Taken care of. Your bike needs tuning? Done. Wondering who’s picking up the tab? Don’t even think about it. We do all the legwork, so you can can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. ULTIMATE FREEDOM Our guides never sleep.
Well they do, but it won’t seem that way to you. We also have people on the ground, connected people, people who can pull strings. We don’t want you to spend one single moment worrying about anything.
Cultural Immersion FRIENDS WITH THE LOCALS We don’t believe
in skimming the surface. We’re not the superficial types. We make friends wherever we go and they have a habit of opening their doors to us. Crush grapes with a local vintner. Meet artists in their studios. Lunch in a farmer’s kitchen. Nothing ersatz about it. WE ARE THE LOCALS The best part is we’ve
been travelling to many regions for so long the locals now consider us locals. Not only do we know our way around; we’re the first on the block to hear news, and we have the keys to the castle. Literally.

La Gastronomie MOUTH-WATERING The food is insanely
good. That’s the bottom line. And because we’re big on experiencing the cuisine of a culture at every level, you can count on exquisite meals, rustic local specialties and picnics that consist of fresh, organic everything. Oh—don’t forget the wines. To die for. That goes without saying. We were born in Beaune, after all. MIND-BOGGLING Attention foodies and
gourmands: we don’t just eat spectacular dishes—we often get in the kitchen with the chef who shows us how to make them. And we meet the winemakers whose vintages we sample. Anyone can make a reservation. We do a deep dive when we dine. We’ve found that makes all the difference.

Fellow Travellers GREAT TRAVEL COMPANIONS You can tell a
lot about a person by the company they keep, and you’ll be keeping company with some of the best. Our trips include a gaggle of the most congenial, interesting souls who share a passion for adventure and a zest for life. WHEN YOU WANT THEM You like the
company of others. But sometimes you simply prefer your own company. At B&R, we get that. That’s why we don’t really think of our trips as group travel. We think of them as the best of both worlds. Feeling social? Prefer solitude? Your choice.
Your Pace GO AT YOUR OWN PACE We believe in free
choice, so it’s not a race—unless you want it to be. Feel like taking the switchback full speed ahead? Be our guest. Prefer to slow down and sip a latte? It can be arranged. However you want to shorten or lengthen the route, our guides always have other options up their sleeves. There are no rules. OR NO PACE AT ALL You’re never locked
in. The omnipresent B&R van can whisk you back to the hotel if you feel like relaxing by the pool. Pump up the volume? Chill in the palazzo? It’s totally your call. Your

WHAT’S NEW We’re constantly asked to tweak, edit, trim, expand, adapt, revise and reimagine trips—we do it all the time! Some requests come up so often, we’ve made them into official trips. Here’s what’s new and exciting...
Bistro Trips If B&R were a Michelin-star restaurant, these trips would be our spin-off bistro next door. Same brilliant kitchen, same renowned chefs—it’s just a little more casual and pared down. Bistro trips offer more independence (more meals on your own), and the hotels tend to be 3 or 4-stars instead of off-the-chart. But the heart of every Bistro trip is exactly the same as our marquee trips—same incredible routes, events, insider access and, of course, B&R guides.
Ready-to-Book Collection Private, self-guided, ready-to-book. We’ve created a collection of off-the-shelf, private adventures for travellers who want all the style and creativity of a B&R trip but want to be on their own. These trips are ideal for 2-8 travellers—and there’s a plethora of styles to choose from. Journey from hotel to hotel or stay in one place. Keep active each day or completely unwind. Enjoy the service of our local guides or venture out on your own. See page 10 for more details.

CUSTOM DESIGNED BY YOU FOR YOU
Like a bespoke suit from a master tailor on Savile Row, these trips are made-to-measure by our team of trip designers. Whether it’s a simple getaway, a tailoring of an existing trip, or an epic journey made from scratch, we’ll craft the journey that’s perfect for you. Western US: A Grand Tour
Discovering Ireland
The family matriarch wanted to take her kids for “Champagne and good times” through the Greek Isles. We found the perfect boat— an exquisite 5-room gulet—and crafted an itinerary of biking, walking, swimming and fishing in secret coves, and dining at our favourite hidden gems.
A couple asked us to create a 60-day cross country adventure for their kids. From the awesome deserts and canyons of Utah and Arizona to the snow-capped peaks of the Sierras, coastal expanses of California and rainforests of the Northwest, we created a journey by land, air and sea that was truly epic.
Four brothers asked us to help them retrace their lineage—by bike. We created the definitive journey: we pedalled alongside loughs, dodged sheep, visited villages, feasted on seafood, stayed at Ballynahinch Castle, golfed, played music, and hosted a Guinnessfuelled céilidh for relatives.
Everyone’s dream trip is different—call one of our Bespoke Travel Designers for a personalized quote.
OPPOSITE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Arriving in high style in Thailand; mother-daughter bonding in Greece; a board meeting in
Burgundy; a new friendship takes flight in Ireland. ABOVE: Utah’s Sorrel River Ranch; biking in China; immersion in the Galapagos.

Europe is where it all began for B&R. Now it’s our second home. In the early days, we strove to introduce our travellers to as many locals as we could. Now, after all these years, we ARE the locals, which means we know EVERYONE and we have the keys to EVERYWHERE. The art, culture and gastronomy of Europe? Our Europhiles will guide you to the very best. And you’ll find the paths we take getting there just as sublime as the spoils themselves.

Provence We love the jazz of the new, but we also revere a classic riff, and nowhere will you find a greater reverence for the pleasures that time and tradition forge than in the fabled towns and hilltop villages of Provence. Not many places in the world can compare with the old world charm and sheer aesthetic beauty of this place. But don’t just take our word for it. Gaze at the dazzling yellow light and smoky green spires of the cypress trees through Van Gogh’s eyes. Everything has star quality here, Michelin or otherwise, from the lavender chocolate to the marvelously unhurried Côtes du Rhônes. In the end, you don’t really tour Provence as much as you let it wash over you, like one of the region’s finest appellations.

DID YOU KNOW? B&R’s very first trip in 1966 was a grand tour of Europe for students. It swept through Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France and England.
Christina Cain She is one trip away from reaching the halfcentury mark in guided trips. An extraordinary sommelier, she’ll know a great Champagne to reach for.
Mark Nojaim Behind the fun exterior (okay, hilarious), lies a deep intellect. No one cares more about understanding the place and time in which he travels.
Phil Haemmerle How Phil guides and takes extraordinary photographs at the same time we’ll never know. Witness his awesome shot on the cover of this book.
Lewis Evans Beyond Luxury to Lewis is checking into Vienna’s finest hotel in full-blown biking gear. A little mud up the backs of his legs makes it even more fun.
Alice VanderVoort Alice has guided over 70 B&R trips. ‘Beyond luxury’ to her? Reading a book on her terrace in Capri, stealing glances at the Tyrrhenian Sea below.
Our Guides doing B&R research in Bhutan or fine tuning our routes in New Zealand. Sakis Mitsoulis, M.F.A. weaves a career as an artist with guiding in Croatia, Greece & Turkey. Sarah Lewis recently finished her studies at LSE and is now teaching in La Rioja, Spain. Sebastian Romero filmmaker extraordinaire, has a penchant for winter bike rides (in southern climes). Sonia Ter Hovanessian, jazz singer from the UK, now calls Bologna home. Stéphane Leclerc is a French-Canadian graphic designer who found adventure in Catalonia this season. Stephanie Bonic is guiding in Vietnam before returning to her other love, wood working. Stephanie Gulledge is keeping warm in Canada downhill skiing. Steven Andrews Native South African who recently guided the Butterfields from Cape Town to Kruger. Suzy Armanini Between B&R trips in France, Suzy sells real estate in Toronto. Tabita Miotto is planning her next golf escapade. Tatiana Brisolla taught biology in Brazil, studied yoga in India, married a Frenchman, and now lives in Switzerland. Thilo Erhardt, M.A., is equally at home guiding in Provence or Jordan. Thomas Chase, I.M.B.A., is living his dream in Paris renovating properties between B&R adventures. Tibor Barna tastes wine in Hungary and teaches English in Vietnam. Tim Richardson recently guided a Private Bespoke adventure in Nepal. Tim Schellenberger is planning an epic B&R trip in Brazil. Tom McCarthy is finishing his PhD in Physics. Tyler Dillon is wintering in Asia (where else would he go?). Vicki Moraes is spending the winter at her family ranch in Brazil. We’re hoping for an invite. Yvonne Power is exploring new trails in Tuscany.

What’s Included Flights aren’t included in the price of your trip (B&R travellers come from all over!), but once your trip starts, we pay for everything it makes sense to pay for. Great wine? Of course. Your shopping spree at Hermès? Umm, no. Hotels Winning hotels are a hallmark of B&R. Sometimes grand, sometimes charming and intimate, always perfect for your particular trip. That’s the B&R style. Signature B&R Guides All services of B&R guide(s), who are adept at wearing many hats. They will do whatever it takes to make your trip hassle free, and are on call 24/7. Great Meals We include all meals when it makes sense, yet we understand that making a great dining discovery is rewarding, too. So sometimes we leave room for exploring on your own. Dietary Restrictions? B&R’s personalized service doesn’t end at the dining room door. Decades of building close relationships with our hoteliers, restauranteurs and chefs make it easy for us to accommodate your every dietary need. Even in France. Table For Two? Each trip offers the opportunity to dine or lunch independently from the group… and we’ll happily make arrangements for you.
Fine Wine Wine (delicious and wellchosen) is included with meals. Easy Starts Our trips start where it makes the most sense: we choose convenient locations that enable a smooth transition into your trip. Transportation Included are all on-trip transfers by yacht, train, 4X4, plane, helicopter (and camels). All Baggage Handling Your baggage is transported from one hotel to the next. On signature trips this is done by local handlers so guides are devoted to you. All Tips We look after all the support along the way, including tips. We grease the wheels wherever it’s necessary—so all you have to worry about is having fun. Perfect Moments To really get to know the region, we experience it in deep and up close. That’s why every trip includes: tastings (local wines, olive oil, artisanal cheeses...); private tours of historic sites, galleries and museums with local experts; and visits with our local friends.
Everything You Need to Know Before each trip, travellers receive a link to a Trip Planner filled with local info. On the road, we provide a Travelogue with insider tips on everything from where to shop to the best places to hang out with locals. Pre-Trip Our guides complete a dry run of each trip the week before it departs. (We like to think of it as a dress rehearsal.) This way the only surprises on your trip are good ones. Nice Briefs Each morning, our guides brief you on the day’s options. We like to do this quietly, one-on-one, so you never get the feeling you’re in a meeting. There’s enough of that at the office. Amazing Routes All biking and walking outings include meticulous, easyto-follow route notes. By no means do you have to follow them, but if you do, we promise nothing short of spectacular—we like quiet county lanes, glorious vistas, and no one but us. Our guides always have additional scenic routes up their sleeves, too. Up for more of a challenge? All you have to do is ask.
w h at ’ s i n c l uded • butterfield & robinson
There When You Need Us Our support vehicles are present along the day’s route to distribute refreshments, carry your purchases, and offer a lift when needed. Local Support, 24/7 To support our travellers, B&R has offices in the region or we have someone living locally so there’s immediate B&R help 24/7.
“We love that the trip price always seems to include 12-15 of the most congenial, interesting, fun travel companions we can imagine.” —J. santogrossi, B&R Traveller
Family Trips These trips are not simply adult trips with kids tacked on. Anything but! They are three crafted trips in one: a trip for the parents; a trip for the kids; and a trip for the family. Time together, time apart… we find the balance. And we bring along kid equipment galore. From bikes, helmets, tandems and trailers to extra guides, vans and even cribs, we’ve got you covered. Intangible B&R Tangibles The years of exhaustive research we’ve done on the ground; the countless personal relationships we’ve cultivated with everyone from hoteliers to chefs and local experts; and the dozens of people who work hard behind the scenes. Walking Sticks Included on all walking trips, the use of lightweight Leki telescoping walking sticks, and water bottles in padded hip or pack-strap holsters that are yours to keep after your trip. Bike Helmets Don’t bother packing your noggin protector—we provide fantastic Bell or Giro helmets.
Custom Bikes B&R has a customized fleet of fully equipped Cannondale hybrids and road bikes for all our European trips. For trips running outside of Europe, we offer the very best bicycles for the region. We have men’s and women’s models in five frame sizes. For the kids, Burley tandems, trailers and youth helmets. And new in 2012, electric-assist bikes will be available on most European trips (subject to availability). To view photos and review full specs of our bikes and other equipment, please visit www.butterfield.com/ourbikes NEW! E-Bikes Want a little boost every now and then? Need help keeping up with your wife? Our e-bikes are regular pedal bikes that provide electric assistance whenever you want it. We plug it in at night, you get extra juice when you need it.

Activity Levels Choose your activity level, modify it on trip. We’ve classified our trips according to how far you might want to go each day, and how hilly the terrain is. But Day 3 dawns and you’re ready to up the ante? We’ve got extra routes. Day 4 brings a mysterious ache that can only be assuaged by a nice, long lunch? No problem—today you cruise. Once you’re on trip, you’re in control of how much you do—the choice is always yours.
Biking
Walking
easygoing 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day over relatively flat terrain with a few small hills— all very manageable for people trying their first biking trip. If you’re in relatively good shape, you’ll be just fine.
easygoing 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day on country lanes, footpaths and coastal or forest trails, all on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with an occasional hill. You don’t have to be a fitness buff, just relatively active.
moderate 40-50 km (25-30 mi.) a day in gently rolling countryside, with occasional longer climbs to points that are well worth the effort. Layover days accommodate varying preferences.
moderate 6-10 km (4-6 mi.) a day over rolling terrain on a variety of surfaces. Most days, one or two steeper climbs to spectacular viewpoints. Vigorous enough that you can dine later with a clear conscience.
challenging
challenging 11-15 km (7-10 mi.) a day in regularly hilly terrain. Routes follow high meadow paths and/or well-maintained cliffside or alpine trails, with a few steep ascents to make you feel invigorated.
50-60 km (30-45 mi.) a day over both level and tougher, hillier terrain with multiple 100 km options. The routes are designed for avid cyclists and include plenty of chances to push yourself.

Multi-Active
MULTI-ACTIVE Our multi-active trips are exactly how they sound—fast-paced trips with activities all day long to guarantee you will never be bored! We’ll make sure you don’t just see it all, but you DO it all, too. Hike, snorkel, zipline, surf, kayak… the choices are endless. We give you options, you build your adventure!
Family
with the kids Family trips have comparable activity levels to the adult trips, but with options to do more or less. Plus there are many extra options, whether whitewater rafting, snorkelling or checking out the shops in town—whatever best suits you and your gang.
Self-Guided
on your own Looking for a little more intimacy? Like to be self-reliant? These trips offer all the extraordinary routes, hotels and local contacts of a B&R trip—but with the autonomy that comes with being on your own. We give you myriad options each day—the hard part is choosing.
