Going further
From the very beginning, we've sought to submerse ourselves where others skim, plant roots in places most just visit, and live among the locals long enough that they consider us one of them. It hasn't always been easy—if you were a fifth-generation French vintner, you'd be suspicious of the Canadians in bike shorts, too—but it's the most rewarding work we can imagine. That's why, in pursuit of creating the perfect trip for you, we continue to leave no stone unturned. If that means combing Piemonte for the next great vintage, scouring Southern Africa for the next great lodge, or foraging Argentina for the next great chef, so be it! —George Butterfield and Norman Howe
We don’t just follow tried and true trails, we blaze our own.

Unparalleled Routes Anyone can take you on the beaten path: we find the ones that aren’t yet beaten, then show up a week before your trip starts, just to break them in a little. Our trip designers try every country lane, path and trail imaginable, often conjuring their own, until they’ve stitched together a masterpiece. It takes months—sometimes years—to get it right, but it's always worth it. (Good news for those who are not cartographically inclined: our European routes come with fully loaded GPS tablets that make navigating a breeze). FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM 5
Culinary Immersion We find there’s no better (and certainly no more delicious) way to explore a culture than through its cuisine, and we’ll go to any length to make sure you relish some of the best meals of your life. A trip to Peru just wouldn’t do without savouring the soul-stirring Japanese-fusion at Lima’s Maido. We scoured Siem Reap to find the best Cambodian curry (it’s the threedollar option at Khmer Kitchen, by the way). Fresh, homemade pasta? The best we’ve ever tasted is served in the backyard of the Lungarellas, where Nonna cooks it just for us. 6 FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM

Exceptional Hotels That’s why our hotels aren’t just generic five-stars. We search long and hard for boutique hotels that are unique, unforgettable experiences unto themselves. We keep our groups small (half the size of most) so we can stay in intimate, one-of-a-kind gems— from 13thC private castles like Loire's Château du Rivau to the stunning 10-suite Riad Farnatchi in Marrakech. An added bonus? Our hoteliers are our friends—which means you get extra special treatment. FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM 9
Your Pace Not up for a full ride today? We’ll book you an appointment at the spa, or grab you a chair by the pool. All revved up after this morning’s double espresso? We know a gorgeous loop if you want to get in a few extra clicks. At B&R, you always go at your own pace. You don’t feel any pressure to stick with the peloton because, well, there is no peloton. You go as fast or slowly as the spirit moves you. You’re sure as heck in no race to get anywhere—unless, of course, you’ve challenged your guide to a sprint (good luck with that). 10 FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM

Signature Guides B&R guides do everything they can to help you embrace spontaneity, delve deep into the local culture and soak up every experience. What makes our guides second to none? They aren’t just travel guides—they are everything from photographers, biologists and architects to artists and sommeliers. They live, work and gallivant all over the world, which makes them really interesting people—the kind of interesting you want to sit beside. They’re also extremely flexible (as in, they will bend over backwards for you). FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM 13
Cultural Immersion From our local friends to out-of-theway locales, we make sure you don’t just see the world, you experience it up close and in deep. That means we don’t spend all day biking or hiking like others do—we stop along the way to soak it all in. We live everywhere we travel—we don’t just breeze in and out—because we know the only way to get true insider access is to be an insider yourself. We’ll help you bond with all our friends—from local chefs and vintners to historians and architects—and take you in the back door of everywhere you want to be. 14 FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM

No Worries When we say you can take off your watch and put away your wallet, we mean it. We take care of absolutely everything. The extra mile? We’ve gone the extra light year to make sure all you have to worry about is having fun. Is there a schedule for the day? For sure, but you can throw it away at the slightest whim. Do all the chefs know about your dietary restrictions? Of course—we’ve met with them all personally. We think of everything. FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES, VISIT BUTTERFIELD.COM 17
What's included ...or as we like to call it, The B&R Starting Point. Some outfits only think in terms of “what's included.” Their trips are defined by checklists, fine print, and “meeting expectations” — ugh. At B&R, we prefer to think in terms of what's possible. How can we make an experience more intimate and personal? How can we fulfil our mission of spontaneous, startling, stunning travel? How can our journeys leave our travellers not merely satisfied, but changed? For us, it's not like math so much as calligraphy. But there are a few things you can count on...

SMALL GROUPS
We keep our groups small and agile because it gives us incredible opportunities.
UNIQUE HOTELS
INTIMATE RESTAURANTS
Many of the most incredible hotels are one-of-a-kind boutique hotels with fewer than 10 suites. Travelling with a big group means we’d miss out. (Unless… three to a room? We didn’t think so...)
Big, bustling restaurants that pump out meals can handle 30 people at once, but a group that big would wipe out our secret back alley haunts. They’d never have us back!
SPECIAL SPECIAL EVENTS
LASTING FRIENDSHIPS
With a small group, we can dine in the home of a local friend. Or sneak into an ancient ruin at night. Or savour a tasting in the tiny cave of an artisanal vintner. Or learn how to make chocolate at the chocolatier...
We believe everyone should have the chance to build real friendships that can last a lifetime. Travelling with a group so big you can’t even remember people’s names? Definitely not our style.

UNPARALLELED SERVICE
We make your life easier—every way we can—every step of the way.
YOUR GUIDES, CONSUMMATE HOSTS
QUALITY ASSURANCE: WE SET THE BAR
Nature or nurture? At B&R, we believe in both. We hire guides who are preternaturally programmed to take care of people in a thoughtful way. Then we train them up to our standard. Good service? It’s an art.
We may have the highest “customer satisfaction rate” in the business, but we don’t bat a thousand. If something goes awry on your trip and it’s our bad, we will make it right. Guaranteed. Full stop.
THE PERFECT AMOUNT OF SUPPORT
AN OPS TEAM THAT’S ON-CALL 24/7
Our guide-to-traveller ratio and van support are always exactly right. Others tout using many vans per trip—but that’s because they have such large groups and transfer their own luggage. We keep things intimate.
On every trip, we have B&R-trained local hosts and deep local connections. Should anything untoward ever happen, our team will be right there at your side. Need strings pulled? We’ve already pulled them.

WHAT MAKES US INIMITABLE
It starts with George and Martha, then it emanates to everyone at B&R.
PEERLESS ROUTES
A CULTURE OF CREATIVITY
Our researchers find routes that are nothing short of spectacular. (We are self-admitted perfectionists.) Our route notes give easy-to-follow directions, and in Europe, we provide tablets loaded with digital routes.
There’s nothing more important to us than nurturing a deep culture of creativity. Every B&R trip must be an imaginative, surprising opus. For this reason, everyone we hire at B&R has a creative bent. It’s a prerequisite.
A PRE-TRIP SCOUTING MISSION
PLEASE, PUT YOUR WALLET AWAY
Only we would ever think to do this: a week before your trip, your guides scout the entire route, meeting with all the key players. Your food allergies? Our chefs are already planning something special, just for you.
Please please please don’t even think about taking out your wallet. Don’t worry about a thing! We pay for everything it makes sense to pay for. Wine? Of course. Your shopping spree at Hermès? Umm, no.

AMALFI COAST WALKING
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Avid Signature Hotels – From $6,995 Steinbeck called Amalfi “a dream place,” and as you take in the view from the Path of the Gods, you’ll understand why. Of course, he could have said the same thing about the hotels (especially ours—we stay at Le Sirenuse, just like he did). Or the food. Or the lemons (they’re huge—limoncello, anyone?). Dream place? More like fantasy land—but who are we to correct a Nobel laureate?
DOLOMITES FAMILY ADVENTURE
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Recreational Signature Hotels – From $4,995 Enjoy action-packed highs in these magnificent crags: heavenly gondola rides, mountain-biking, hiking, and rock-climbing. Send the kids to a pizza feast while you sip the region’s best wines. Our hotels—above and beyond where others stay—are accessible by bike, foot, or gondola. Adults leave invigorated, kids leave with convincing Italian accents or, possibly, lederhosen.

ITALIAN LAKES WALKING
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Enthusiast | Signature Hotels - From $6,295
The secret’s long been out on Lake Como (thanks for nothing, Clooney), but we’ve still got surprises up our sleeves. We’re the only ones popping over to the stunning Swiss side to explore Lugano and Ticino. We take three boat cruises to explore the lakes from the water. Oh, and then there’s the big surpri—well, we better not say. Don’t want that Danny Ocean to find out.

Hike to the highest peak or spend the day indulging in culture and cuisine: you can’t make a wrong turn here. (But just to be safe, we’ve given this journey a thousand very, very right ones.)
PIEMONTE BIKING
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Enthusiast Signature Hotels – From $4,995 Allora... Nowhere does slowing down feel more apropos than in Piemonte, birthplace of Slow Food. A mouthwatering morsel rewards your every step—with miles of roads wending through endless vineyards, expect to do a lot of salivating. Wine abounds: we’ll pair our meals with some of the finest (on us, natch), then nap it off at charming family-run La Villa.

Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Enthusiast Signature Hotels – From $5,795 In Piemonte, soulful walks through vineyards and medieval towns lead to hotels that are as Splendido as the Barolos and Barbarescos along the way (which you taste with an expert). Delve deep, hunt truffles, and savour some of the best meals of your life (this is a gastronomic paradise, after all). Then it’s time for the Italian Riviera. Private boat cruises and oh-so-glam Portofino await.
PUGLIA FAMILY ADVENTURE
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Recreational Signature Hotels – From $4,795 Kick off summer vacation in Italy’s most bambinifriendly region. Splash in the sparkling Adriatic, let the kids get their Katniss Everdeen on (archery, not revolution-mongering), float in a catamaran, and explore Ostuni—Italy’s bright, white answer to Santorini. We designed this trip with young ones in mind—ziplines anyone?—and have sourced hotels as magical for kids as they are for you.

PUGLIA BIKING
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Recreational | Signature Hotels – From $4,495
Private Trip | 5 Nights | Recreational Signature Hotels – From $3,595 Vineyards, grottos, trattorias, and whitewashed villages against the aquamarine Adriatic. A multiplicity of landscapes awaits you in this ancient, untouched part of Italy—hunting grounds for marauding royalty and occupying forces (who clearly all came for the nosh). Carnivores, get ready to swoon for pampanella: ribs Puglia-style. Relax, and Angela will pour you a glass of Primitivo.
Between the sun, the shore and the insanely good food, Puglia has a way of making everything feel more sumptuous. The mozzarella tastes more delicious when it’s sampled fresh at a cheese-making demo. Cycling feels more serene along the coast of the Adriatic. And a post-ride apero is even more refreshing when sipped in our friend’s private garden in stunning Lecce.
SICILY WALKING
Trip Designer | Christina Cain
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Enthusiast Signature Hotels – From $4,795 Myths hold that Hercules once roamed this ancient island—and we’ve planned a trip that’s every bit as legendary. We encounter the rumbling giant that is Mount Etna and the volcanic vineyards of its namesake appellation. We take over the Villadorata to get up close and personal with the Baroque old town of Noto. And our archaeologist friend illuminates the 3200-year-old Necropolis.
One of the (many!) advantages of our long-term love affair with Italy is that while others flock to the same tried and true regions, we expand our horizons. Puglia is the perfect example: we were there years before anyone else, forging lifelong connections and plotting routes up and down the Adriatic. How intimate are we? Well, let’s just say we know who makes the best everything (but we’re not telling till you’re on trip!).

Passion permeates every corner of this region. You can taste it in Rioja’s wines and San Sebastián’s pintxos. You can see it in the terraced hills of the Douro and Alentejo’s sprawling olive groves. You can feel it in the kinetic energy of Barcelona and the calm serenity along the Camino de Santiago. CAMINO DE SANTIAGO BIKING
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Enthusiast Bistro Hotels – From $3,995 Traditionally, the Camino de Santiago is about soul searching, but we’re more interested in soul-stirring. And it culminates at the resplendent Reis Catolicos, a stone’s throw from the cathedral.

And the local auberges, lavish hotels, and intimate boutique properties don’t require courage—just a reservation (which we’ve already nabbed for you).
Straddling the border between French and Spain, Basque Country is an experience unto itself. From beautiful Biarritz on the French side, we take in breathtaking views of the Pyrenees. Later, swap mountains for oceans on the idyllic Spanish Basque coast, then finish in San Sebastián, staying at Maria Cristina, the Grand Old Dame of the Basque coast.

Scheduled Trip | 6 Nights | Recreational Signature Hotels – From $5,995 Experience an emergent country bursting with modernity. Bogota shines with creativity and the food scene rivals anywhere in the world. Get in on the city’s Ciclovia, a weekly public cycling day that closes many streets. Outside the city? Meet the men and women who grow your coffee, enjoy lush hills, cloud forests, and colonial architecture. If that doesn’t get you buzzing, the caffeine will.

PERU WALKING
Scheduled Trip | 6 Nights | Avid | Signature Hotels - From $7,495
Scheduled Trip | 5 Nights | Recreational Signature Hotels – From $5,995 Newfoundland, a.k.a. the Rock, is home to one of the most colourful cultures in Canada. Its art, music, and storytelling are legendary (not to mention its hospitality). Walk the Sherwink Trail—one of the best hikes in the world. Picnic on a fishing stage with folk music. And visit beautiful Fogo Island, where you’ll marvel at whales and icebergs (and the inn the world can’t stop gushing over).
Peru offers some of the most incandescent landscapes on the planet. Walk the ruins of the Sacred Valley and hike the cloud forests of the Inca Trail. See Machu Picchu after the tourists have left and sleep next door at Sanctuary Lodge. Then head back to Cusco on the Hiram Bingham Train and meet the finest weavers in Peru over a final-night dinner—in an Incan palace.
PATAGONIA EXPEDITION
Trip Designer | Veronika Macas
Scheduled Trip | 9 Nights | Enthusiast Signature Hotels - From $9,795 A trek through Patagonia isn’t just a “journey”—this is an UNESCO-recognized odyssey. Start amidst the epic landscapes of Los Glacieres then stroll through the Magellanic forest of El Calafate. Finish in legendary Torres Del Paine, and find yourself swept away by the granite peaks, absorbed in the pristine turquoise waters and pampered at an explorer’s paradise—Explora Lodge.
The Sacred Valley feels like Narnia and Neverland all rolled into one. But what I love is how we don’t just show you the sights or introduce you to the culture, we immerse you in it. We see Machu Picchu after the tourists leave to really soak in its majesty. We meet weavers plying an ancient trade and cutting-edge chefs creating a new culinary culture. We don’t just peruse Peru. We pry it wide open.

A farm-to-table lunch in Cape Town becomes a private picnic and wine tasting... at the actual farm. “Seeing the desert” becomes a camel ride over softly lit Saharan sand dunes, an eye-widening trek along the Oman Grand Canyon, or a night in a private luxury camp. Scheduled Trip | 7 Nights | Recreational Signature Hotels – From $6,995 Oh man. This beautiful country couldn’t be more unlike Dubai, its flashier neighbour. This is the land of the golden-orange Wahiba Sands, ancient souks, the soaring Hajar Mountains, and the Omani Grand Canyon. Hey, how’d you like to sail in a wooden dhow in Muscat Harbour? Or spend a night under desert stars? Mystical, magical and mysterious: exactly our cup of (cardamom) tea.

BUTTERFIELD & ROBINSON • SAFARI TRIPS
Safari WILDLY INTIMATE, ACTIVE AND DELICIOUS. An African safari is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. We make sure it’s beyond your wildest expectations. For a trip this big, nothing less than B&R's maniacal sense of perfectionism—and sure-footed familiarity with this part of the world—will suffice. We pull out all the stops: exclusive luxury lodges, a horde of local botanist, biologist and ranger friends to explore and break bread with, and remarkable itineraries that guarantee joyous expletives. Let the other guys sit in Range Rovers all day waiting for Godot—you're with us. And we have a rhino to catch (on camera).

Director of Expedition trips
“Going on safari in Tanzania means reckoning with some of earth's most humbling locales—the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, the Selous Game Reserve— the sort of places that remind you of this planet's vastness. Today, it's not that hard to travel to these venues, but to really experience them? That's what B&R does best.”
“I make it my mission to select partners whose safaris benefit the community as much as the traveller—human and otherwise. Fortunately, the most responsible partners are also the most passionate. In true B&R fashion, we pair that passion with our thirst for adventure to craft experiences you cannot find anywhere else.
“With B&R, there’s never any sacrificing of safety or comfort—but that doesn’t mean we keep you on the outside looking in. We get in deep, whether it’s hanging with lions or gasping at the wildebeest migration.” Brad Crockett was named Safari Specialist by Departures magazine (that translates to you’ve gotta travel with this guy).

Family Trips PLANNED BY PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY HAVE KIDS. See the world as a family. We don't believe “let's have kids” should mean you have to stop exploring the world. We also don't believe you should get home from a holiday just as tired as when you left. So we have real moms and dads at B&R design and test-drive everything. Our resulting journeys get rave reviews from young and young-at-heart people alike. Nothing's dumbed down, everything's 100% stress-free, and there’s always as much action and excitement as the kids can handle. (“That was the best day of my life” is a refrain we hear often.) Expect the perfect balance of time with-the-kids and time-apart: leaving you incredibly relaxed and reinvigorated. Bickering on a family holiday? We don’t even know what that is!

BUTTERFIELD & ROBINSON • OUR TRIP DESIGNERS
Our Trip Designers We think of our trip designers as architects, because to meet B&R's standards, a journey must be a blissful marriage of science and art. The science is logistics—how to make a trip really work, so you aren't tired, hungry, or bored for even a second. The art is making it as revelatory and resplendent as a Venetian basilica ceiling: both a perfect expression of the region, and a perfect work of living poetry. In other words, the sort of experience that leaves you gobsmacked. Here are our gifted “architects”:
The original trip designer— George Butterfield—still oversees the trip planning process at B&R.

Marathon runner. Free-diver. Forest trekker. Around-the-world cyclist. Now training to be a paramedic! ANTHONY WEERSING An American living in Toronto, where he is our resident Japanese cultural expert. Has ridden clear across Canada. Conquered roads in France and Switzerland. Former pedicab driver. Don’t tell him we told you. DALE SHERROW Can just as easily talk about corporate finance as he can Volnay Premier Cru. But his true passion is learning the intricacies of people, culture, and local cuisine. Says gushy, poetic things like “I found the pure happiness that the path brings you.” DOMINIC GIOSSAN Renaissance man (and possessor of five degrees). Can say “Holy @#$%!
