Welcome

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

Welcome to the new season!

I hope you enjoy looking through this brochure and choosing which events to attend this season. I’ll let the pages speak for themselves, but will highlight a couple of events that are worth adding to your diary. Excitement is building for the Big Session Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend, 29 April to 1 May. Weekend tickets have already sold out but there are still tickets available for most events. In addition to the best of English folk gathering in Buxton, there are lots of other things happening throughout the weekend including a huge beer festival, music sessions and ceilidh in the Pavilion Gardens Marquee, a ‘Pied Flycatcher’ walk in the Goyt Valley, a festival ramble and a Folk Train from Manchester Piccadilly. The weekend leads nicely into the Buxton Spring Fair on Bank Holiday Monday, so if you’re here for the weekend there’s plenty to do in town before you head home. Earlier this year, Gargantua, our entry in the National Theatre Connections Festival, saw a giant baby running amok and causing chaos. It really was a fabulous sight to behold and demonstrated the incredible talent of our Young Company. Next on the Young Company horizon is The Addams Family and Ali Baba in June, these productions are always exciting for everyone involved and are a great way to support local young talent, come along and have a look! The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic 2015 residency was very warmly received, so it’s a great pleasure to be welcoming back the Orchestra for The Last Waltz, an enchanting evening presented by John Suchet who will regale the audience with the stories of some of the best loved music of the 19th century. Simon Glinn – Chief Executive

It’s 1974 and 8 year old Jo is snuggled up on the settee watching TV. There, on the screen, is a woman unlike any other. That woman is Hattie Jacques. Forty years later and Jo is walking in the footsteps of her idol. Despite uncertainty and unemployment, Jo is an actress. But is there a place for her in TV, film or theatre?

In an uncertain world this could be the most important evening of your life.

Highlighting attitudes towards larger women in show business, the play asks whether things have changed since Jacques did Carry On.

EDWARD II + GREN BARTLEY

WILL POUND & EDDY JAY

Blending English roots with the rhythms of the Caribbean and songs from across the British Isles, Edward II’s range is both fascinating and breath–taking. Will Pound is one of the finest harmonica players of his generation. Famous for his inventive arrangements, he has performed with musicians as diverse as Martin Simpson, Concerto Caledonia and Guy Chambers.

Gren Bartley is an exceptional writer and musician. Along with his touring band, which includes a string section, three part harmonies and driving percussion, he is creating something truly original in the underground folk scene. Tickets: £14 Discounts not available

Andy Kirkpatrick

Radiator

A unique story teller and comedian, described as being the ‘Ranulph Fiennes of British climbing’ by the Today programme, Andy Kirkpatrick has climbed in some of the most inhospitable places on earth. In this new tour we begin where his last finished, arriving in Antarctica with the task of guiding a group of BASE jumpers to the top of one of the ‘hardest mountains in the world’.

He travels to their remote farm, only to find that they have fallen over the edge of eccentricity into outright squalor. With only a few days free from work, Daniel tries to help his parents adapt to their new circumstances.

The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Bye Bye Baby takes you back in time on a musical journey through the career of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, whose songs graced such films as The Deer Hunter, Dirty Dancing and Grease.

By Richard Bean Based on The Servant with Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni The award–winning West End and Broadway success that garnered rave reviews in the national press hits Buxton for the very first time in this amateur production.

It’s Brighton in the 1960s and poor Francis Henshall is out of a job, circling a seedy world of small time gangsters and would be actors and finding it difficult to remember the last time he ate. Then, suddenly, he has two jobs. Amazing! But that means two guvnors!? And how do you work for two guvnors? With difficulty! Francis clings on while a non–stop sequence of misunderstandings, comic wordplay and frantic slapstick create mayhem around him.

Richard Bean has picked up the conventions of commedia dell’arte and created a classic British comedy. That might sound highbrow – but it’s not!

Ante Gelo guitar Zvonimir Sestak double bass It is not easy to find a single word in English for the Bosnian concept of sevdah, although ‘yearning’ perhaps comes closest. Like the Spanish duende, it carries multiple meanings – love, hopeless love, endless love – but in the end, it’s a way of life, and a narrative that tells a story of itself through jazz-tinged plaintive melodies and virtuoso accompaniment. Amira is the foremost proponent of modern sevdah, a true Balkan diva used to gracing the greatest stages of central and eastern Europe. Dubbed ‘Bosnia’s Billie Holiday’ but perhaps more akin to Edith Piaf, she was born in Sarajevo when the popularity of traditional music was at a high tide. In concert she is a world-class artist, her wit and fluent English annotating the poetic lyrics. Amira is in the UK for her annual London concert, and has chosen to spend some time in Buxton too. Karen Matheson

The Giant’s Loo Roll

Widely recognised as the compelling vocals of Celtic super–group Capercaillie, Karen Matheson grew up on the west coast of Scotland, where she was immersed in the deep well of traditional songs that have been her inspiration for over 30 years of recording and performing.

By Nicholas Allan

Peak District Music Centres

Fast forward to last summer, and Matheson’s stunning rendition of Ae Fond Kiss stole the show at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Her new solo album is a musical love letter to her family’s Hebridean roots, with a collection of timeless Gaelic songs that evoke the character and atmosphere of island life. Tickets: £18 Discounts not available

Look out for the biggest loo roll ever on stage in this GIANT of a children’s musical. The villagers living in the town below the Giant’s house had better watch out, that loo roll has gone bouncing down the hill and straight towards them! Luckily, the townsfolk find lots of uses for runaway loo paper – one sheet provides a huge canvas for an artist, a tailor uses another to fill her shop with paper pants and a school class makes a huge dart that can fly. But what about the Giant himself – doesn’t he need any loo paper? The townspeople have an answer for that, too!

The Peak District Music Centre’s bands and orchestras return to the Opera House for their hugely popular annual Gala Concerts. Over 300 of the area’s top young musicians perform well known classics, movie hits and even a touch of jazz.

Tickets: Adults £12, Children: £10 Family Tickets: £38

Tickets: £5–£8 (mat), £6.50–£9.50 (eve) Students/Children: £1 off

Renowned for their standards of excellence, the ensembles range from elementary level through to the more advanced players involved in Derbyshire’s City & County Youth Orchestra and Wind Band. Their precision and youthful exuberance are guaranteed to lift the spirit.

If a show is cancelled we will try to contact customers in advance. We publish any cancellation or unavoidable changes to performances on our website and social media. Please check before travelling. All information is correct at time of going to press.

ADMISSION

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa). Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

51 MATCHAM

By becoming a Matcham member you get great benefits including discounts and priority booking. Plus you get to hear about new shows going on sale and receive the What’s On brochure before everyone else, so you have a better chance of getting tickets for a sell–out show even if there’s no Matcham discount. For more information about becoming a member, see page 48.

STANDBY TICKETS

Standby tickets are sometimes available to students age 16+ and anyone in receipt of JSA/ Income Support. The tickets are usually priced at £10 and are available one hour before the performance, subject to availability.

GROUP DISCOUNTS

In addition to our standard group rates, we can sometimes offer a more generous discount for groups of 20+. Free teacher places are available with some group bookings. Please enquire with the Box Office.

DISCOUNTS AND SPECIAL OFFERS

Only one discount is available per ticket and all offers and discounts are subject to availability. You may be asked to provide proof of eligibility. Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre reserves the right to withdraw offers at any time.

GARDENS TICKETS

Gardens Tickets guarantee the best seats in the theatre along with complimentary refreshments and cloakroom service in the Pavilion Gardens Conservatory.

CHILDREN

REFRESHMENTS

GETTING HERE Buxton Opera House, Water Street, Buxton SK17 6XN

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children.

We have three bars in the Opera House: the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars which are open for pre–show and interval drinks 45 minutes before each performance. You can beat the queues by ordering interval drinks in advance. Unfortunately we are unable to take debit and credit cards.

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available for children’s shows.

Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old. For more information, please ask the Box Office for a copy of our family safety leaflet.

DANCING

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

SURTITILES

Surtitles may not be visible from some seats. Please check with the Box Office before booking.

*RESTRICTED VIEW

A small number of seats in the Upper Circle have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience possible, therefore, these seats are usually priced at a lower rate to reflect the restricted view and are the last seats to be put on sale. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats.

Pavilion Arts Centre, St John’s Road, Buxton SK17 6BE

SMOKING

Buxton is easy to reach via the A6, A515 and A53. The theatre is well signposted from the town centre. There is free parking after 6pm on the upper level of the Pavilion Gardens car park (don’t use the downstairs car park as it closes early) or on some streets close to the theatre which are not covered by the Residents Parking Scheme.

THEATRE TOURS & COFFEE MORNINGS

A train service is available from Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton. For more information on services and connections call 08457 484950.

Both Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre are no smoking buildings and e–cigarettes are not permitted.

The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold a coffee morning in the Dress Circle bar most Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon, they’d love to see you! They also offer tours of the theatre at a cost of £2.50 per person. Private group tours can also be arranged, please contact 01298 72050 for details. For more infomation about our regular Back Stage Pass theatre tours, see page 7.

VOLUNTEER

Make new friends, learn new skills and contribute to the life of this wonderful theatre by becoming one of our volunteers. Volunteers help with selling programmes and refreshments and showing customers to their seats. A full induction and ongoing training is provided. For more information call: 01298 72050, email: foh@boh. org.uk or write to Buxton Opera House, 5 The Square, Buxton SK17 6AZ.

INFO

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an adapted toilet. We are happy to help you transfer from your wheelchair to the theatre seats. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating, even if you don’t need any help, please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

DISABLED CUSTOMERS AND COMPANIONS

Registered Disabled customers receive discounts to many performances. Personal Assistants or anyone in receipt of Carers’ Allowance are admitted free of charge (proof of eligibility may be requested). Companions outside these categories receive a 50% discount as long as discounts are available on that performance.

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system. The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs accessibility, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency. We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Assistance dogs are welcome.
