WELCOME

Welcome Welcome to the new season! As ever, we are thrilled to present our new and exciting programme. Our valued customers know that a great theatre experience in the glittering atmosphere of the Opera House is a truly memorable occasion. We also welcome new visitors to the Opera House, set in the magical location of Buxton with its wonderful gardens and many superb restaurants and hotels, and this season is packed with an inspiring mix of top class productions. Last season, both the English Touring Opera and the Russian State Ballet played to packed houses, and both these popular companies are returning with thrilling new productions. There are many choices for families including the ever delightful Tiger Who Came to Tea and of course our famous pantomime. Last year the pantomime broke box office records, so early booking is advised for this year's Sleeping Beauty. Two Tony and Olivier award-winning musical comedies are set to take Buxton by storm. The hugely successful and heartwarming Hairspray will transport you back to the beat of the 1960s and Monty Python's Spamalot will have you rolling in the aisles. The season also includes Buxton's first Comedy Festival weekend headlined by Jimmy Carr, the Buxton International Festival Book Weekend, a new production of the much loved Brassed Off and a host of big names including Derren Brown, Barbara Dickson and Jason Donovan. Always check our website for new additions to the season. All of us at the Opera House look forward to welcoming you to a great night out! Very best wishes Paul Kerryson – Executive Director

Provence. April 1939. English couple Peter and Suzy are living in idyllic isolation; far, it seems from the rumblings of the oncoming war. Their peace is suddenly shattered by a stranger from Peter's past who unearths secrets from a buried and hidden life, which throws Suzy's world into turmoil. In a world where the Third Reich is emerging as a dangerous regime, deceit, lies and subterfuge make this fast-paced thriller a dark and nail-biting rollercoaster. ’What a play. MUSIC SUNDAY 20 AUGUST 7.30PM Q The Music Show presents

James Bond Concert Spectacular

By Simon Williams Starring Peter Lovstrom (Widows), David Janson (Get Some In!, Hi-de-Hi!, Keeping Up Appearances) and Ciara Janson (Hollyoaks).

The James Bond Concert Spectacular brings the fabulous and iconic music of James Bond to you in a stunning new concert performed by a 13-piece band. A huge success all around the world, this energetic and exciting show features some of the UK’s leading musicians and an informative and highly amusing compere. Expect all the songs from the 007 movies, including Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Skyfall, Thunderball, Live And Let Die, Goldeneye and Licence To Kill.

Hard-hitting and with a tightly structured storyline, Kiss of Death is a very modern thriller with plenty of dark, sardonic humour to punctuate its mood of prevailing menace. Actress Zoe Lang attends a most unusual improvisation workshop and finds herself auditioning to be the bait for a real-life serial killer. Taking on the role of a young runaway, Natasha Campion, Zoe meets the sinister and manipulative John Smith. Layer upon layer of twisted unreality is stripped away as Zoe and the police home in on their target.

Expect a fabulous night out and one that you will be talking about for years to come.

Crooners

Derren Brown

Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner

This modern world does not always seem the place for men of style and vigour. Men with a penchant for sentiment, romance and charm. Men who own tap shoes.

Camelot

Music by Frederick Loewe King Arthur, Guenevere, Lancelot and Excalibur are names that ring down the ages. There are heroic Knights of the Round Table, Merlin, magic, fairies and folklore. In an age of chivalry, the forces of good and evil are embattled in an enchanting romantic musical in which hope and noble sentiments triumph. Expect glorious costumes, fine voices and all those wonderfully familiar songs including Camelot, C’est Moi, Take Me to the Fair, How to Handle a Woman, Follow Me, The Lusty Month of May, Fie On Goodness!, What Do the Simple Folk Do? and If Ever I Would Leave You. Present Company uses professional principals and orchestra with a non-professional chorus.

Featuring the outstanding live musicianship of the 9-piece Mini Big Band, Crooners pay homage to some of the greatest crooners of all time, with songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Matt Monro, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin and more. Russian State Opera presents

By Puccini

By Puccini

Russian State Opera returns with another beautiful production of the greatest opera classic featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a delightful live orchestra.

Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madama Butterfly is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride, whose selfsacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy.

Tosca is a melodrama where love and politics collide, and murder takes place at the highest level.

Madama Butterfly remained Puccini’s favourite opera where his supreme theatrical achievements gave the world some of the most sublime and beautiful arias in history: One Fine Day and Love Duet, as well as the Humming Chorus which has been popular with opera-goers for over a century.

with Nick Holland

In this special acoustic performance Barbara Dickson and her pianist Nick Holland explore her catalogue of songs at an intimate level. The pair let the words and melodies take ‘centre stage’ as they perform a wonderful range of material drawing on Barbara’s folk roots, contemporary greats, and some of her classic hits. Emerging from the Scottish folk scene of the late 1960s, Barbara has enjoyed mainstream chart success with hits including Answer Me, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Caravan and the million-selling number one single, I Know Him So Well. Rhydian, Richard and Adam

Doug Scott

More stand-up from some new and not-so-new faces on the comedy club circuit.

Welsh stars Rhydian, Richard & Adam come together with their live band to bring you a truly magical evening of classical arias and contemporary songs.

Doug Scott’s mountaineering highpoint was the first ascent of Everest by its enormous South West Face – Everest: The Hard Way – but his greatest adventure was undoubtedly his first ascent, accident and then escape from the Ogre.

This month’s headliner Carly Smallman is terrified of competition. That was a bit of a problem when she found herself in the Musical Comedy Awards finals in 2011! But with her unique blend of outrageous impropriety and adorable sincerity, Carly has established herself as a firm favourite on the comedy circuit. Also on the bill is ‘secret comedian’ Mike Newall. Mike’s timing is the envy of performers and he’s living proof that some people are just funny. Finally we have ADHD performer Theresa Farlow. By day she’s a scientist, but the UK comedy scene has allowed her to channel her surplus energy into humour. Marvyn Dickinson comperes. Ages 18 & over only. May contain strong language and adult material. TICKETS: £7 IN ADVANCE, £10 ON THE DOOR. Discounts not available

Classically trained Rhydian has carved out a successful career both as a recording artist and in musical theatre, and his entrancing live performances continue to captivate audiences. Rhydian is joined on stage by brothers Richard and Adam, one of the most successful acts to emerge from Britain’s Got Talent. TICKETS: £28 VIP Tickets: £76 Discounts not available A VIP ticket includes front row seats, a chance to meet Rhydian, Richard and Adam, a photo opportunity plus a souvenir laminate.

Crawling Down the Ogre

The Ogre is the most difficult of the world’s high mountains to climb. In 1977 Doug Scott and Chris Bonington made the first ascent; their subsequent descent, in the dark, immediately became an epic. Abseiling off the summit tower, Doug slipped on ice and swung into the cliff he had just climbed, breaking both legs. Shortly after, a storm blew in and their escape became one of mountaineering’s greatest epics. Throughout the 1920s, Kitty Witless and Dr Dan Von Dandy toured the US as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, a devastating avalanche buried them under two tons of snow – instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to global warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs in this vintage cabaret with a twist of drag. Ages 16 & over only. TICKETS: £16.50 Discounts not available

Lulu

The Summer of Love

A singer, actress and businesswoman – it seems there is nothing Lulu cannot do. It was the 60s when she first burst onto the scene with the mega, definitive and enduring Shout and made her name synonymous with rock and blues. She has topped the charts in every decade, working over the years with some of the greatest talents of our time including Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, Elton John, David Bowie and, of course, Take That with the unforgettable Relight My Fire.

Taking you back on a nostalgic musical journey to that incredible summer of 1967 – an eclectic explosion of flowers, psychedelia, freedom, peace and love and, of course, timeless music that inspired a generation.

Relaxed Performance

Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming and they may find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances. With the support of the Mayor’s Charity and local companies, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Sleeping Beauty at 5.30pm on Tuesday 12 December. To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. There is also a visual story available to download from the website to help prepare for your trip to the theatre. THURSDAY 4 TO SATURDAY 6 JANUARY

The world’s favourite rags to riches fairy-tale where dreams can come true is a magical mix of Prokofiev’s energetic score, lively choreography and colourful costumes. Whilst her stepmother and her ill-mannered daughters prepare for the Royal Ball, graceful Cinderella can only dream of dancing with the dashing Prince. Later that evening, her rags become a glittering gown and she is swept magically to the ball. From that very moment the Prince is smitten, midnight strikes and one lost crystal slipper later, he must now embark on a journey to find his lost love…

52

Protected from the outside world by Father Frost, the exquisite Snow Maiden plays innocently amongst the dancing snowflakes in the enchanted Land of Frost. Based on a traditional folk-tale, set in the snow covered landscape of rural Russia, this seasonal sparkler follows the Snow Maiden as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace.

TICKETS: £34.50–£42 Matcham: 12% off Groups of 8 or more/Senior citizens/Disabled: £3.25 off (not Dress Circle)

This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse King and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince, and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins...

Ed Byrne

Milton Jones is Out There

The Bootleg Beatles

Originally intended by Ed to be called I’ll Millennial You in a Minute, the promoter considered the title, 'off-puttingly baffling'. It's Ed's own chainsaw in the photo, by the way.

Milton Jones is out there. No, really out there and this time he hasn't just forgotten his keys. He's holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it, which means it’s probably just a window. In his brand new show he'll be putting his foot down and lifting the lid on the pedal bin of lies of the media (which doesn't include this press release obviously).

One of the world’s most famous Beatles tribute bands, the Bootleg Beatles continue to draw critical acclaim from across the globe with their stunning recreation of the greatest songbook of all time.

Spoiler Alert

Is life that bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? Come and watch as Ed Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself. Ages 16 & over only. ‘Comedy’s Holy Grail. Go see!’ – Sunday Times TICKETS: £27 Discounts not available

Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too. Can we do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes we can! ‘Absurdist one-line masterpieces’ – Times ‘The best one-liner merchant in British comedy’ – Chortle ‘Pun-derful jones leaves the audience gagging for more’ – Metro TICKETS: £29 Discounts not available

in Concert

Tracing the Fab Four’s journey through the 60s, every tiny detail is meticulously covered from costumes to authentic period instruments; from their witty 'Scouse' banter to their 'inflection perfect' vocal mimicry. Complete with a little help from their orchestral ensemble, this is a not-to-bemissed spectacular for ‘Beatlemaniacs' of all ages. It's not the Beatles… but you simply won’t believe it! ‘Off-the-scale fabulous’ – Chris Evans ‘Flawless!’ – Mojo ‘Mind-boggling accuracy’ – Mail on Sunday TICKETS: £32 Discounts not available

A Shakespeare’s Globe and Bristol Old Vic Co-Production

The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales From the Story by Hans Christian Andersen and Other Storytellers. Writer and Co-Adaptor Joel Horwood

Director and Co-Adaptor Emma Rice

Emma Rice’s ‘exquisite’ (Daily Telegraph) production comes to Buxton Opera House following its critically acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe. As our destitute heroine struggles to survive, she strikes her matches to keep warm. Each match will conjure a new story, a new vision, and we will hold her hand as we tumble down the rabbit hole together. Inspired by the beautiful and devastatingly sad Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Match Girl, and combining Andersen’s other tales, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina, The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales reveals a spellbinding world of magic and mystery. Steeped in the metaphor and meaning that runs through the veins of Andersen’s enduring stories, this will be a night to delight, transport and surprise. For adults and brave children alike, expect music, puppetry, dark magic... and perhaps some modern truths that we would all rather remain hidden. ‘An out-and-out triumph. Endlessly inventive, gloriously silly, poignant, topical, edifying.’ – WhatsOnStage ‘Theatre to snuggle down into on a frosty night.’ – The Guardian

We cannot exchange tickets or money for a different event. Where there is more than one performance of an event we can exchange tickets where available. This requires a minimum of 48 hours notice and there is £1.50 administration fee for exchanging tickets.

LOST TICKETS

We can reprint tickets on the night of the performance at a cost of £1.50. Proof of ID will be required.

REFUNDS

We are unable to refund the cost of the tickets unless a show is cancelled. Postage charges are non–refundable.

RESERVATIONS

Reservations cannot be taken for events that are likely to sell out such as high profile music and comedy performances. Other reservations can only be held for seven days, but for very popular shows you will be asked to pay for your tickets in advance. If you book on the same day as the show, your tickets will be held until 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

CHANGES TO PROGRAMME

If a show is cancelled we will try to contact customers in advance. We publish any cancellation or unavoidable changes to performances on our website and social media. Please check before travelling. All information is correct at time of going to press.

ADMISSION

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa). Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

DISCOUNTS AND SPECIAL OFFERS

On many events we offer concessions to seniors, children, students, disabled customers, groups and customers in receipt of some benefits.

Offers are subject to availability and are not available in conjunction with any other offer or on previous ticket purchases. You may be asked to provide proof of eligibility. Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre reserves the right to withdraw the offer at any time.

• Senior: we class anyone aged 60 and over as a Senior concession.

• Children: we class anyone aged 15 and under as a child. • Students: we class anyone in full-time education with an NUS card as a student. • Groups: we class groups of eight or more people as a group (group size may vary depending on event). Where available, we currently offer concessions for customers in receipt of Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment & Support Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance. Proof of eligibility is required. Essential Companions If there are discounts available on a performance we can offer a free companion ticket to anyone in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or anyone accompanying an Access Card holder with the +1 symbol. Other essential companions and Derbyshire County Council Carers Emergency Card holders can still receive a 50% discount on full price tickets as long as there are discounts available on a performance. These companion tickets are only available if you are accompanying the person you are caring for and are subject to availability. Proof of eligibility required. Standby Tickets Standby tickets are sometimes available to students age 16+ and anyone in receipt of JSA/ Income Support. The tickets are usually priced at £10 and are available one hour before the performance, subject to availability. Proof of eligibility required.

MATCHAM If you visit the theatre regularly, joining our Matcham Membership scheme will make sure you get the best seats at the best price. Benefits include: • Half price tickets to some ‘first night’ performances • Discounts on many shows

• Priority booking for some events

• Advance email notification about new shows • Reservations held until one week before a performance, or two weeks for very busy or sold out performances

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an accessible toilet. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat. Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system. The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs

accessibility, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking.

beat the queues by ordering interval drinks in advance. Unfortunately we are unable to take debit and credit cards.

For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency.

DANCING

We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices.

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Assistance dogs are welcome.

You’re welcome to take photos of our beautiful theatre before and after the performance, however photography and filming is not allowed during the performance.

CHILDREN

RESTRICTED VIEW

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available on first come first served basis. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children. Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three years old. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old.
