Welcome Welcome to the new season! We hope you enjoy browsing through this new season brochure. We’ve got some great new shows coming to our stage over the next few months, many of which have never been to Buxton before such as Gangsta Granny, Footloose and Hairspray. We are pleased to be working on our first co-production with Creative Cow and Malvern Theatres on the Graham Greene drama Our Man in Havana. We’d love it if you could come and support this project.

The Big Session festival line up has been confirmed for Friday 28 to Sunday 30 April with Oysterband headlining in the Opera House on Saturday and a Sunday night treat with the Levellers. Once again, the weekend leads into Buxton Spring Fair on the Bank Holiday Monday so there will be plenty of things happening in town if you want to make it a long weekend. We’re still planning the fringe activities, so the best way to keep up to date is by following our dedicated social media @bigsessionfest. We are delighted to have been awarded the Most Welcoming Theatre in the East Midlands for the second year running! This is a testament to the hard work of all our staff and volunteers, from the gleaming brass rails polished to perfection by our lovely housekeeping team to the smiling welcome from our volunteers. Winning an award like this helps to raise the profile of both the theatre and the town and we have our sights firmly set on the national award for 2017. Back Stage Pass Opera House Theatre Tours

Take a look behind the scenes at one of the country’s finest examples of a Frank Matcham theatre. In our guided theatre tours, discover the fascinating history of this iconic building, from its Edwardian beginning right up to the present day. MINI MOVERS & GROOVERS

If you love to sing then come and join our friendly Kaleidoscope Community Choir delivered in partnership with Buxton Festival. You don’t have to audition to be part of the choir, you can just come along and join us for an hour of singing in the Dress Circle Bar.

If you have children under 5 then our Mini Movers & Groovers sessions are ideal for you!

From choral classics and favourite hymns to pop and folk, the sound of the choir fills the Opera House corridors each Tuesday from 1pm. Tickets: £3.50 A Christmas concert performance will take place on Tuesday 13 December 1pm in the Pavilion Art Centre. Tickets: £4.50 including mulled wine and a mince pie.

Through a mix of creative movement and dance, toddlers and children can learn new skills in a fun and relaxed setting. Sessions use imaginative play, movement and music to help teach balance and coordination. Sessions take place on Monday morning from 10am to 10.45am during term time. A Christmas Spectacular of Brass and Comedy

A Christmas Performance Formed in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1993, Low were perhaps the slowest of the so-called ‘slowcore’ bands – delicate, austere and hypnotic, the trio’s music rarely rose above a whisper, divining its dramatic tension in the unsettling open spaces created by the absence of sound.

Initially comprising the husband-and-wife team of guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk and drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker along with bassist John Nichols, Low began as an experimental reaction to the predominance of grunge. Andy Powell

Plus special guest Sara Creeney Jazz at the Arts Centre favourite Andy Powell returns with the Rhythm Katz Swing Band with a selection of songs from the Great American Songbook. Powell’s reputation keeps growing after recent appearances alongside Andy Prior, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Heather Small and Paul Jones. Emily Portman’s third album Coracle has been gathering momentum since its release in 2015, along with a wave of glowing reviews. It was named ‘Best Album of 2015’ by the Telegraph and has received airplay from the likes of Jarvis Cocker on Late Junction and with a BBC live session in store for Mark Radcliffe’s Folk Show. Portman will be joined by celebrated and longstanding collaborators Lucy Farrell (viola, saw, voice) and Rachel Newton (harp, voice). The Coracle Band features virtuosic string player Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead), M G Boulter (Lucky Strikes) and classical percussionist Toby Kearney. ‘Entrancing and unsettling. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson’s career has consistently garnered critical praise. His first self-titled album was released in 2000. In 2002, he played a key role in drawing his mother out of a 17-year musical retirement to record her landmark disc Fashionably Late, which he played on and co-produced.

His second album, Separate Ways, was released in 2006 and demonstrated how much his song writing, performing and record-making skills had evolved since his debut. It was followed in 2007 by Up Front & Down Low, a collection of personally charged readings of classic American country songs that demonstrated Thompson’s increased assurance as a performer and interpreter. Relaxed performance Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming. Additionally, many families with children who express themselves loudly, or get up and move around, find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances. With the support of the Mayor’s Charity, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Snow White at 5.30pm on Tuesday 13 December. To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. Harmonopoly is a barbershop quartet based in Manchester whose members have been singing as a quartet since November 2014. They made a small ripple in the barbershop world after coming second in the British Association of Barbershop Singers National Youth Competition 2015. Playing since 1982, Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz was inspired when its band leader, Rodger, visited New Orleans, the birth place of jazz. He was asked to sit in on a session at the Maison Bourbon and the audience response was exhilarating. Since then, Rodger has been playing with his band at venues across the region. Messiah To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Kinder Choirs, the Kinder Anniversary Chorus and the Kinder Anniversary Orchestra will join together for a magnificent and uplifting performance of Handel’s Messiah. Messiah is one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works. For this very special anniversary performance, the oratorio will feature international soloists Yvonne Howard, Susan Bickley, Nicky Spence and Gidon Saks. The Kinder Anniversary Chorus is formed from members of the community, supporters, parents, friends and audience members, together with the Kinder Anniversary Orchestra conducted by Joyce Ellis MBE. Back Into The Blue Tour

Ultrarunner Jasmin Paris has been breaking records left, right and centre. Last June, she claimed the fastest time ever for the Ramsay Round, which links 24 Lochaber Munros in a gruelling 60-mile loop. She has also claimed the fastest female time for the Bob Graham Round, covering 66 miles across 42 of the highest peaks in the Lake District in 15 hours and 24 minutes. Paris will talk about her record breaking achievements and the preparation she undertakes before any big race, including training and nutrition, as well as how the runs actually worked out on the day. She will also take a look back at getting into fell running and fitting everything around a busy schedule. In 2007, Louko entered the youth department of the Sibelius Academy as a student of Janne Malmivaara and Merit Palas. Miriam Brown is a fourth year cellist studying with Sally Pendlebury at the Royal Northern College of Music. Plus support: Sally Barker Credited with originating British folk-rock, Fairport first took to the stage in 1967’s summer of love. Throughout the intervening five decades (and numerous changes of line-up) the band’s passion for live performance has never wavered. To mark their 50th year, Fairport has released a brand new CD titled 50:50@50. The band will play a selection of tracks from the album as well as long-established favourites from their extensive repertoire. Fairport Convention’s line-up is Simon Nicol on guitar and vocals, Dave Pegg on bass guitar, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin and vocals, Ric Sanders on violin and Gerry Conway on drums and percussion.

First paired together whilst on tour in the US a few years ago, award-winning singer-songwriters Steve Tilston and Jez Lowe realised they could be onto something special. TICKET PRICES AND FEES

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly. The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The cost of a ticket is made up of: • Deal Value: The face value of the ticket set by our clients

• Booking Fee: All tickets, except where we sell tickets for a third party, include a 7.5% Booking Fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of our ticketing system, ticket printing, staffing and all credit, debit, cheque, and cash handling costs. These fees help us to stay an effective business, which in turn helps us reinvest in our theatres and continually improve the service we provide • Restoration Levy: Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To help maintain and operate both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre, the cost of tickets includes a restoration levy of £1 for tickets over £10 and 50p for tickets under £10. Tickets for some community events and other venues are exempt from the restoration levy.

If you book online at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk you can: • Login to your account and change your preferences • Become a Matcham Card member and have your discount automatically added to your basket • Choose your seat from our seating plan or be allocated the ‘best seat’ available at the time of booking • Print your tickets at home Not all tickets, concessions and special offers are available to book online. In some parts of the theatre there are seats with a restricted view of the stage and these are usually the last seats to be put on sale. Delivery Options: You are welcome to collect your tickets from the Box Office during normal opening hours, but if you prefer to have your tickets posted we charge a delivery fee of 80p which covers the ticket printing and postage cost. You can also print your tickets at home free of charge.

BOX OFFICE

The Box Office is usually open Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm. When there is no performance the Box Office will close at 6pm. Sunday Box Office opening is generally 4pm to 8pm but this varies depending on performance times. The Box Office will be closed on a Sunday if there is no performance. Tickets for Pavilion Arts Centre can be bought at the Arts Centre Box Office one hour before the show or bought in advance from the main Box Office. Please note that we are only able to take cash for tickets bought on the Studio door. To speak to one of our friendly Box Office team call 01298 72190.

TICKET EXCHANGE

We cannot exchange tickets or money for a different event. Where there is more than one performance of an event we can exchange tickets where available. This requires a minium of 48 hours notice and there is £1.50 administration fee for exchanging tickets.

LOST TICKETS

We can reprint tickets on the night of the performance at a cost of £1.50. Proof of ID will be required.

REFUNDS

We are unable to refund the cost of the tickets unless a show is cancelled. Postage charges are non–refundable.

RESERVATIONS Reservations cannot be taken for events that are likely to sell out such as high profile music and comedy performances. Other reservations can be held for seven working days, but for very popular shows you will be asked to pay for your tickets in advance. If you book on the same day as the show, your tickets will be held until 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

CHANGES TO PROGRAMME

If a show is cancelled we will try to contact customers in advance. We publish any cancellation or unavoidable changes to performances on our website and social media. Please check before travelling. All information is correct at time of going to press.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa). Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

STANDBY TICKETS

Standby tickets are sometimes available to students age 16+ and anyone in receipt of JSA/ Income Support. The tickets are usually priced at £10 and are available one hour before the performance, subject to availability.

GROUP DISCOUNTS

In addition to our standard group rates, we can sometimes offer a more generous discount for groups of 20+. Free teacher places are available with some group bookings. Please enquire with the Box Office.

DISCOUNTS AND SPECIAL OFFERS

Only one discount is available per ticket and all offers and discounts are subject to availability. You may be asked to provide proof of eligibility. Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre reserves the right to withdraw offers at any time.

GARDENS TICKETS

Gardens Tickets guarantee the best seats in the theatre along with complimentary refreshments and cloakroom service in the Pavilion Gardens Conservatory.

CHILDREN

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available on first come first served basis. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children. Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old. For more information, please ask the Box Office for a copy of our family safety leaflet.

DANCING

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

SURTITILES

Surtitles may not be visible from some seats. Please check with the Box Office before booking.

RESTRICTED VIEW

A small number of seats in the Upper Circle have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience possible, therefore, these seats are usually priced at a lower rate to reflect the restricted view. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats.

REFRESHMENTS

We have three bars in the Opera House: the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars which are open for pre–show and interval drinks 45 minutes before each performance. You can beat the queues by ordering interval drinks in advance. Unfortunately we are unable to take debit and credit cards.

SMOKING

Both Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre are no smoking buildings and e–cigarettes are not permitted.

THEATRE TOURS & COFFEE MORNINGS

The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold a coffee morning in the Dress Circle bar most Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon, they’d love to see you! They sometimes also offer tours of the theatre at a cost of £2.50 per person. Private group tours can also be arranged, please contact 01298 72050 for details. Please note that the theatre is over three levels and the tours involve several flights of stairs. For more infomation about our regular Back Stage Pass theatre tours, see page 4.

VOLUNTEER

Make new friends, learn new skills and contribute to the life of this wonderful theatre by becoming one of our volunteers. Volunteers help with selling programmes and refreshments and showing customers to their seats. A full induction and ongoing training is provided. GETTING HERE

Buxton Opera House, Water Street, Buxton SK17 6XN Pavilion Arts Centre, St John’s Road, Buxton SK17 6BE Buxton is easy to reach via the A6, A515 and A53. The theatre is well signposted from the town centre. There is free parking after 6pm on the upper level of the Pavilion Gardens car park (don’t use the downstairs car park as it closes early) or on some streets close to the theatre which are not covered by the Residents Parking Scheme. There is additional evening and weekend parking (excl 28 Sept, 3 and 16 Nov) at St. Thomas More School, Palace Fields, Buxton SK17 6AF – please leave some money in the honesty Box! A train service is available from Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton. For more information on services and connections call 08457 484950.

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an adapted toilet. We are happy to help you transfer from your wheelchair to the theatre seats. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating, even if you don’t need any help, please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

DISABLED CUSTOMERS AND COMPANIONS

Registered Disabled customers receive discounts to many performances. Personal Assistants or anyone in receipt of Carers’ Allowance are admitted free of charge (proof of eligibility may be requested). Companions outside these categories receive a 50% discount as long as discounts are available on that performance.

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system. The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs accessibility, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking.

For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency. We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Assistance dogs are welcome.
