Welcome Welcome to the new season! We hope you enjoy browsing through this new season brochure. We’ve got some great new shows coming to our stage over the next few months, many of which have never been to Buxton before such as Gangsta Granny, Footloose and Hairspray. We are pleased to be working on our first co-production with Creative Cow and Malvern Theatres on the Graham Greene drama Our Man in Havana. We’d love it if you could come and support this project.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

The Big Session festival line up has been confirmed for Friday 28 to Sunday 30 April with Oysterband headlining in the Opera House on Saturday and a Sunday night treat with the Levellers. Once again, the weekend leads into Buxton Spring Fair on the Bank Holiday Monday so there will be plenty of things happening in town if you want to make it a long weekend. We’re still planning the fringe activities, so the best way to keep up to date is by following our dedicated social media @bigsessionfest. We are delighted to have been awarded the Most Welcoming Theatre in the East Midlands for the second year running! This is a testament to the hard work of all our staff and volunteers, from the gleaming brass rails polished to perfection by our lovely housekeeping team to the smiling welcome from our volunteers. Winning an award like this helps to raise the profile of both the theatre and the town and we have our sights firmly set on the national award for 2017. To all our lovely customers who took the time to vote – thank you!

Low

A Christmas Spectacular of Brass and Comedy

Jazz at the Arts Centre

A Christmas Performance Formed in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1993, Low were perhaps the slowest of the so-called ‘slowcore’ bands – delicate, austere and hypnotic, the trio’s music rarely rose above a whisper, divining its dramatic tension in the unsettling open spaces created by the absence of sound.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

Initially comprising the husband-and-wife team of guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk and drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker along with bassist John Nichols, Low began as an experimental reaction to the predominance of grunge. Their latest studio album, One and Sixes, features contributions from Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche. Tickets: £25.50–£28 Discounts not available

Emily Portman’s third album Coracle has been gathering momentum since its release in 2015, along with a wave of glowing reviews. It was named ‘Best Album of 2015’ by the Telegraph and has received airplay from the likes of Jarvis Cocker on Late Junction and with a BBC live session in store for Mark Radcliffe’s Folk Show. Portman will be joined by celebrated and longstanding collaborators Lucy Farrell (viola, saw, voice) and Rachel Newton (harp, voice). The Coracle Band features virtuosic string player Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead), M G Boulter (Lucky Strikes) and classical percussionist Toby Kearney. ‘Entrancing and unsettling. A marvellous, original work’ – Observer ‘Coracle is, without doubt, one of the folk albums of the year’ – Songlines

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson’s career has consistently garnered critical praise. His first self-titled album was released in 2000. In 2002, he played a key role in drawing his mother out of a 17-year musical retirement to record her landmark disc Fashionably Late, which he played on and co-produced.

His second album, Separate Ways, was released in 2006 and demonstrated how much his song writing, performing and record-making skills had evolved since his debut. It was followed in 2007 by Up Front & Down Low, a collection of personally charged readings of classic American country songs that demonstrated Thompson’s increased assurance as a performer and interpreter. By 2016 he had released six studio albums and has toured the world with Elton John, among others. Tickets: £18.50 Discounts not available

Relaxed performance Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming. Additionally, many families with children who express themselves loudly, or get up and move around, find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances. With the support of the Mayor’s Charity, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Snow White at 5.30pm on Tuesday 13 December. To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. There is also a visual story available to download from the website to help prepare for your trip to the theatre. Tickets for the Relaxed Performance are £10, with one essential companion being free of charge. For more information, visit the website or call the Box Office on: 01298 72190.

In March 2016, Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station looking to reconnect with the culture of railroad travel and the music it inspired. Winding along 2,728 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train paused to pick up passengers. On the Shine A Light tour, they’ll be playing songs from the journey, along with favourites from their own back catalogues. Tickets: £22 Discounts not available

From shot-gun shack and cotton-field to festival main stage, the prodigious talents of Lil’ Jimmy Reed have taken him a long way from the Mississippi River. One of the last surviving performers of classic Louisiana down-home blues, Lil’ Jimmy’s stinging guitar work, gritty vocals and haunting harmonica have been taking Europe by storm. His music has won him many awards and in 2014 he was inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame. He is accompanied on piano by Bob Hall, widely regarded as the UK’s finest blues and boogie exponent and by the diminutive dynamo Hilary Blythe on rock steady bass. Derby Gilbert & Sullivan Company presents

Although The Sorcerer is less well-known than the everpopular The Mikado, it contains delicious humour and beautiful and exciting music, including the famous patter song, My name is John Wellington Wells, which is always ‘explosive’ fun! Accompanied by a full orchestra.

The Mikado has survived for over 130 years and remains arguably the most popular opera written by the partnership. This new production by Andrew Nicklin, with Gilbert poking (not always) gentle fun at the British Establishment, remains as potent as it has ever been, especially post Brexit. Ko-Ko’s 'Little List' will inevitably be updated to take into account the news and the fads of early 2017. Accompanied by a full orchestra.

Tilston is the writer of classics such as Slip Jigs and Reels, The Naked Highwayman and Here’s to Tom Paine and his songs have been covered by the who’s who of folk. Cue the prankster Puck and his fairy flunkeys who love nothing more than to meddle with the mortal world. With the promise of solving all of her problems, they lure Thisbe into the woods where it isn’t long before she finds herself embroiled in their roguery. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper the very reason for her awkwardness, long hidden and deeply buried, leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood – on Valentine’s Day. Ruth Rendell’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and cover-ups which, when revealed, brings a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself.

Led by Director Roy Marsden, best known as an actor for playing PD James’ detective Adam Dalgliesh for 14 years on ITV, the cast includes film, TV and stage favourite Sophie Ward, who played the beautiful, ill-fated love interest of Young Sherlock Holmes and Dr Helen Trent in long-running ITV drama Heartbeat, pop-idol Mark Wynter who since his hit parade days has featured in seven Agatha Christie Company productions, Deborah Grant (Not Going Out, Bergerac,), movie icon Shirley Anne Field, who became an overnight star in two landmark films The Entertainer opposite Sir Laurence Olivier, and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning with Albert Finney, Antony Costa who shot to fame in chart topping boy band Blue, and Agatha Christie Company stalwart Ben Nealon whose TV credits include ITV’s award winning drama Soldier Soldier.

William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play By Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor Acclaimed stars of the West End stage, the Reduced Shakespeare Company are back with another barnstormingly irreverent and breathtakingly hilarious celebration of our cultural heritage – as seen through the eyes of three Americans wearing trainers. In a better-latethan-never nod to the Bard’s 400th anniversary, the bad boys of abridgement present this ‘new’ play by the man himself, as discovered in a Leicester car park! The show, mercifully abridged by the RSC from its full hundred hour running time to a more palatable ninety minutes, embarks on its debut UK tour.

‘I love criticism just so long as it’s unqualified praise,’ Noel Coward once said. Lucky then that the reviews for MTP’s new production of Noel & Gertie, based on the playwright’s 54-year friendship with Gertrude Lawrence, have met with admiration, acclaim and applause. The love story, devised by Sheridan Morley from the couple’s letters and diaries, is told with all ‘the Master’s’ flair and wit. Featuring song and scenes from Private Lives and Blithe Spirit, this beautifully set and immaculately executed production by Matthew Townshend takes a perfectlyorchestrated trip down memory lane. A showcase of the affectionate, complex and tempestuous relationship of two of the best-loved performers of the 20th century.

The Show

Brian Kennedy

For more than half a century the Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music. The seven young singers that make up today’s London-based group are driven by the same innovative spirit that has defined the five-time Grammy winners since they first made waves in the 60s. With two new albums in 2015 (Deep End and Yule Songs vol.II), the Swingles celebrate that legacy by starting a whole new chapter.

Steve Steinman’s all new hit show delivers the best of the best soundtracks from some of the coolest and 'Iconic' movies of all time.

Having survived a childhood on the infamous Falls Road, West Belfast, at the height of its troubles, Brian Kennedy has beaten all the odds to carve an extraordinary career in music. First and foremost a live performer and songwriter, Kennedy’s constant touring of Ireland, the UK, Australia, Germany and the US has resulted in an ever-growing international fan base over a phenomenal 25 year career.

In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music. The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched the Swingle Singers to fame. Since then their repertoire has grown to include a huge variety of music, as well as new original songs. European Arts Company returns with a hugely entertaining collection of classic one-act farces by Anton Chekhov, including The Evils of Tobacco, The Dimwit, The Bear, Swan Song and The Proposal. This is Chekhov as you’ve never seen him before – funny! Originally performed in Russian vaudeville theatres, these bittersweet plays are Chekhov at his comic best – before The Seagull got stuffed, Uncle Vanya fired blanks, the Three Sisters started moaning and The Cherry Orchard was ‘car-parked’. ’Chekhov wasn’t all doom and gloom! European Arts Company’s production of Chekhov Shorts is fast-paced, witty and engaging’ – The Stage Tickets: £14 Discounts not available

Programme to be confirmed.

Made up of three award-winning young musicians, the Scarlet Trio formed whilst studying for the String Leadership Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music. They were awarded the Hirsch Prize for their performance of Beethoven’s String Trio in C minor and have since relished playing the small but fantastic repertoire for string trio.

Members of the Scarlet Trio will be available for a meet and greet following the performance. Tickets: £7 in advance, £10 on the door Discounts not available

With some brand new songs, some grand old favourites, gorgeous songs of love and songs of disgraceful filth, Dillie will break your heart, mend it again and have it sent to the cleaners for pressing. And she’ll give you her recipe for chutney while she’s at it. Dillie will be accompanied on the piano by the very young but very talented Michael Roulston. ‘Keane, whose piano-playing remains as sprightly and inventive as ever, prompts gales of laughter with merely the raising of a quizzical eyebrow’ – Times ‘Her worldview is laconic, her lyrics lacerating, her voice now capable of going deeper than a Chilean miner’ – Telegraph Tickets: £22 Discounts not available

Jon Richardson

Let’s Hang On

Westphalia is Not An Option

Old Man

Join German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn for an evening of Teutonic jolliness at its best. After his last show tackled those well-known staples of light entertainment that are the British obsession with home ownership and the self-serving nature of most fundraising efforts, this time Henning’s having an unbiased look at immigration. He also wonders if, generally speaking, people are competent. Luckily in his case this doesn’t matter as either he’s funny or he lives up to a national stereotype. It’s a win-win situation. Come along. Or else.

The British Comedy Award nominee and star of Live At The Apollo and 8 Out Of 10 Cats is embarking on a nationwide tour to complain about the state of the world and offer no solutions. Since his last show he has become a husband and father, seen the UK vote to leave the EU and watched the rise of Donald Trump, all of which leaves him asking one question, why does it seem that no one else alive can correctly load a dishwasher?

Booking Terms & Conditions

INFO

TICKET PRICES AND FEES

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly. The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The cost of a ticket is made up of: • Deal Value: The face value of the ticket set by our clients

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

• Booking Fee: All tickets, except where we sell tickets for a third party, include a 7.5% Booking Fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of our ticketing system, ticket printing, staffing and all credit, debit, cheque, and cash handling costs. These fees help us to stay an effective business, which in turn helps us reinvest in our theatres and continually improve the service we provide • Restoration Levy: Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To help maintain and operate both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre, the cost of tickets includes a restoration levy of £1 for tickets over £10 and 50p for tickets under £10. Tickets for some community events and other venues are exempt from the restoration levy.

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa). Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

CHILDREN

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available on first come first served basis. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children. Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old. For more information, please ask the Box Office for a copy of our family safety leaflet.

DANCING

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

SURTITILES

Surtitles may not be visible from some seats. Please check with the Box Office before booking.

RESTRICTED VIEW

A small number of seats in the Upper Circle have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience possible, therefore, these seats are usually priced at a lower rate to reflect the restricted view. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats.

REFRESHMENTS

We have three bars in the Opera House: the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars which are open for pre–show and interval drinks 45 minutes before each performance. You can beat the queues by ordering interval drinks in advance. Unfortunately we are unable to take debit and credit cards.

SMOKING

Both Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre are no smoking buildings and e–cigarettes are not permitted.

THEATRE TOURS & COFFEE MORNINGS

The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold a coffee morning in the Dress Circle bar most Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon, they’d love to see you! They sometimes also offer tours of the theatre at a cost of £2.50 per person. Private group tours can also be arranged, please contact 01298 72050 for details. Please note that the theatre is over three levels and the tours involve several flights of stairs. For more infomation about our regular Back Stage Pass theatre tours, see page 4.

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an adapted toilet. We are happy to help you transfer from your wheelchair to the theatre seats. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating, even if you don’t need any help, please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

DISABLED CUSTOMERS AND COMPANIONS

Registered Disabled customers receive discounts to many performances. Personal Assistants or anyone in receipt of Carers’ Allowance are admitted free of charge (proof of eligibility may be requested). Companions outside these categories receive a 50% discount as long as discounts are available on that performance.

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system. The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs accessibility, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency. We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Assistance dogs are welcome.
