Welcome

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

Welcome to the spring season!

I hope you enjoy browsing this brochure. We have a superb programme for you in the coming months – I’ll let the pages speak for themselves, whilst picking a few personal highlights. Firstly, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who voted for us in the UK Theatre Awards. We are now officially the My Theatre Matters! ‘Most Welcoming Theatre in the East Midlands 2015.’ This is a tribute to the tremendous work of our staff, and in particular to the dedication of our volunteers who contribute so generously to our customers’ experience. We enjoy an extraordinary level of community support and we are very grateful to everyone who showed that our theatres matter. We received a lot of praise for the superb production of Birdsong earlier in 2015, so the company’s return with Flare Path in 2016 is eagerly anticipated. Our Young Company are in excellent form too, and for something very different I recommend their production of Gargantua which is our contribution to the National Theatre Connections Festival in March – no spoilers, but the story revolves around a giant baby running amok and causing chaos! The Big Session Festival now has a permanent new home here in Buxton. Hosted by Oysterband over the Bank Holiday weekend, 29 April to 1 May, the cream of English folk will be gathering in Buxton. Guests include June Tabor, Sam Carter, Seth Lakeman, Lucy Ward, Emily Portman Trio, Edward II, Gren Bartley Band, Will Pound and Eddy Jay, and there’ll also be a huge beer festival in the promenade marquee with more than 150 real ales and ciders and providing the perfect setting for our Big Session Ceilidh and music sessions throughout the weekend. The promenade marquee hosts the programme of activity that is normally in the Octagon, which is now being refurbished until early 2017. Please continue to support those events too, and to visit Pavilion Gardens when you come to the Opera House and Arts Centre. We’re working closely with our colleagues at Pavilion Gardens to make your visits to our venues extra-special, and you can now reserve pre-show dining for many events when you book your theatre tickets: see individual entries for details. Finally, you’ll notice in the brochure that some lower priced tickets have an asterisk next to them. This denotes that these seats have either a ‘restricted view’ or ‘restricted legroom’ and are priced accordingly. These seats usually go on sale after the other seats have sold out. Simon Glinn – Chief Executive

The Solem Quartet were brought together in 2011 while studying at the University of Manchester and took the name of their alma mater’s motto ‘arduus ad solem’, meaning ‘striving towards the sun’. The quartet continues to achieve great success, taking part in prestigious competitions such as the RNCM Nossek Prize and the Britten Centenary Intercollegiate String Quartet Competition.

The members of Solem Quartet will be available for a meet and greet over coffee after the performance.

A chance meeting between Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and George Harrison led to the recording of the album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, but Orbison’s untimely death in 1988 meant the supergroup never toured.

Giselle

Sleeping Beauty

Swan Lake

In a heart-warming and poignant work, the story of the delicate Giselle and her duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score replete with visual splendour and dramatic passion. Opening on a rustic village when the harvest is being gathered, the story progresses towards an eerie moonlit forest, haunted by beautifully drifting spirits.

A classic story of love and innocence, Sleeping Beauty is every child’s favourite fairytale. Full of mystery and magic, Tchaikovsky’s sublime score beautifully brings to life a fantasy world in which the Lilac Fairy struggles against the evil Carabosse.

Tchaikovsky’s irresistible romance is famous for being one of the most tragic love stories of all time. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moonlit lake where the swans glide in perfect formation, Swan Lake is a tale plucked straight from Russian folklore. It tells the story of a princess transformed into a swan by an evil sorceress. The dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s best known technical feats and is a wonder to see live on stage.

For TV psychic Tony Stockwell, communicating with those who have passed on is a demonstration of belief as well as a desire to bring comfort and purpose in this world. He has appeared on numerous TV programmes, including The Psychic Detective, Street Psychic and Psychic School. His focus on the educational aspect to what he does has led him to teach at specialist schools for mediumship and to release a series of instructional audio CDs. Stockwell’s shows are humorous and engaging, pushing the boundaries of his communication to an ever higher plane. Evenings of mediumship are not scientifically proven and are presented for education and entertainment purposes only.

Plus special guests Curved Air

Following last year’s sell-out tour, which included special guest performances at the US National Memorial Day in Washington DC, the Caracalla Unicef Concert in Rome and the BBC Proms in the Park, best-selling classical crossover artist Russell Watson is back with a brand new show. Songs from the Heart features a stunning collection of our best loved songs. Watson’s back catalogue is immense and his performances are both captivating to watch and enchanting to listen to. Early booking is recommended.

Two of the most dynamic female vocalists to emerge from the classic rock era of the 70s perform live in Buxton for the first time. Recognised as being the first to blend progressive rock with symphonic arrangements, Renaissance regularly feature a full orchestra in their recordings. Spearheaded by Annie Haslam since 1971, she reformed the band in 2009 with a new line-up. They went on to tour North America, Japan and South Korea and produced a new album, Symphony of Light. Curved Air are best known for the single Back Street Love. Fronted by Sonja Kristina, they continue to entertain old and new fans alike and recently released their seventh studio album, North Star.

In an award-winning show endorsed by Frankie Valli himself, Let’s Hang On celebrates the career and music of one of popular music’s most successful bands of all time. From their beginnings in the early 50s and 60s, take a step back in time with hits such as Grease, Bye Bye Baby, December 1963 (Oh What A Night!), Sherry, Walk Like A Man, and Big Girls Don’t Cry. In a recently revamped production featuring new sound, lighting and onstage screens, the show makes its way towards a spectacular finale with Let’s Hang On. ‘You guys are dynamite!’ – Frankie Valli ‘An authentic masterpiece’ – The BBC

Frazzled! A Guide to Mindfulness

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman

The much loved comedian, actor and writer Ruby Wax is returning to Buxton after her sell-out tour in 2014. Wax is no stranger to the topic of mental health, based on her own experiences she wrote a best-selling book, Sane New World, which delved into why we sabotage our sanity with our own thinking. With her new book on mindfulness due out in 2016, Frazzled! is an opportunity to discuss the power of mindfulness practice and how it can be applied in daily life.

Over the last two decades, the Roberts-Lakeman name has become synonymous with quality. Kathryn’s sublime vocals merge seamlessly with Sean’s deft and inventive live guitar playing and his award-winning sonic skills in the studio. In addition to chart-topping hit records for brother Seth Lakeman, who will be taking part in this year’s Big Session, Sean has produced tracks with Levellers, Billy Bragg, Frank Turner, Imelda May and Bellowhead as well as a string of other folk and acoustic acts.

Nicholas Ward, violin Richard Muncey, viola Jennifer Langridge, cello Schubert, Trio movement in B flat D471 Hans Krasa, Tanec (Dance) Beethoven, String Trio in G Op 9 no 1

This event is your passport to saner living. She might not be sane herself but she does a pretty good imitation.

Voted Best Duo in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013, their new album Tomorrow Will Follow Today is their boldest musical statement to date, combining rarely covered traditional songs with confidently written compositions to create a superb new album.

OPERA Saturday 23 April 7.30pm

OPERA Sunday 24 April 3pm

Iphigénie en Tauride

Don Giovanni

Pia de’ Tolomei

By Gluck Vampire-like villains and human sacrifice form a bloodthirsty backdrop to what is one of the most refined and perfect of operas, based on a famous story from Greek myth. By a composer who influenced future generations from Mozart to Wagner, this account of the reunion of Iphigénie and her brother in the aftermath of the Trojan War is an eloquent, heart-wrenching masterpiece. Sung in French with English surtitles. Pre-show talk at 6.30pm.

By Mozart Is Don Giovanni a hero who defies all authority – or villain, a sinner, and a murderer? Whether you’re charmed or repelled by opera’s most charismatic antihero, you’ll have an adventure with Mozart’s most engrossing opera – from the magnificent score to its chilling conclusion. Sung in English. Pre-show talk at 6.30pm.

By Donizetti A noblewoman is locked in a tower in Tuscany by her jealous husband, whose heart has been poisoned by a friend, in this opera based on Dante’s Inferno. The characters are drawn with extraordinary intensity, and the two men in particular are reminiscent of Iago and Othello. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
